THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT

Some of their stuff is Richmond-like, if that makes sense TIGERS COACH DAMIEN HARDWICK AFTER SYDNEY’S SHOCK WIN LAST SATURDAY

YOUNG TALENT TIME: Sam Wicks and Braeden Campbell (inset) were among five Swans playing their first games on the MCG in last week’s shock win over Richmond.

EDITOR’S LETTER

t is not often you sit watching a game of footy with mouth agape, but for many neutrals, that was the case last Saturday afternoon as the young cygnets of Sydney took the might of Richmond apart at the MCG. The Swans piled on eight goals in the second quarter to power to a 40-point lead at half-time and, while the final margin was 45 points, it was only the unseasonably warm 30-degree weather that sapped some of their energy in the second half and let the Tigers make the final score that bit more respectable. Making the result all the more remarkable was five Swans – Sam Wicks, Logan McDonald, Braeden Campbell, Errol Gulden and Chad Warner – were playing on the MCG for the first time. Seven Sydney players (eight if you include unused sub James Bell) had played fewer than 20 games and there they were humbling Richmond, winner of three of the past four flags and the outright favourite to win it again this year, on its own patch of dirt. It was exhilarating stuff, but the AFL’s department of youth wasn’t done.

Sydney’s revival is based on a new attacking game-plan

u There is not much North Melbourne can take from last Friday’s shellacking at the hands of the Western Bulldogs other than a few history lessons. One-sided contests like that are the exception rather than the rule and, while the final margin of 128 points does not make pretty reading, the Roos must take stock very quickly.

Immediately afterwards, Essendon strode on to Marvel Stadium and destroyed top-four aspirant St Kilda by 75 points, with Archie Perkins and Alec Waterman making their debuts and Harrison Jones and Nik Cox playing just their third games. The night before at Adelaide Oval, the Crows made it two wins from three games, with a team that included 10 players with 15 games or fewer to their names. With North Melbourne, Fremantle and Hawthorn to come, the Crows are eyeing a 5-1 start to the season and laying the foundation for the most unlikely of finals berths.

This is a side that came into the new season with a rookie coach – David Noble – who had just replaced a rookie coach in Rhyce Shaw in the most trying of circumstances. The broom that swept through the list at the end of the 2020 season was a clear indication that, on field, the Roos were trending in the wrong direction. You can mount a case to say maybe

Sydney’s revival is based on a new, attacking game-plan devised by coach John Longmire and his new senior assistant Don Pyke, the former Adelaide Grand Final coach who is relishing the opportunity to do what he loves – strategising and game-planning – without the myriad of other distractions and

they should have stuck fat with some of their experienced types, but at least they drew a line in the sand. The rebuild will be long and at times painful, but here are some quick history lessons. Fremantle (2013) and Adelaide (2017) made Grand Finals less than a decade ago and both fell away alarmingly not long after for a variety of reasons.

The Dockers were belted by 133 points by Geelong at GMHBA Stadium late in 2018 and a few years later are starting to resemble a side that could challenge again. The Crows had a well-documented meltdown after 2017, but like the Dockers, they have invested in youth. North Melbourne will take the same path, but it’s going to require time and patience. ONE WEEK at a TIME HAMSTRUNG: Star midfielder Dion Prestia is among a host of Tiger injury concerns.

the spotlight that comes with being a senior coach. But if the Swans continue this rich vein of form, he’ll be a man in demand before too long. Sydney is reaping the reward of its zealously-guarded Academy, with Campbell and Gulden the

latest graduates from a program that has developed Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills and Nick Blakey in recent years. It remains to be seen how long the young Swans can play at this high level, but it makes Thursday night’s SCG clash with the Bombers all the

more palatable, especially with Lance Franklin returning to the side after being rested last week. For Richmond, it is not panic stations just yet. Coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers can be relied upon for a poor performance like that once a year, but they head to Adelaide Oval for Friday night’s potential Grand Final preview with Port Adelaide, which was equally poor against West Coast last week, with skipper Trent Cotchin, Kamdyn McIntosh and Dion Prestia all set to miss. Important defender Nick Vlastuin also won’t be back for another six weeks. But it might be alarm bells for St Kilda, which didn’t shy away from pre-season expectations, but has been poor for a fortnight and faces a season-defining three weeks against West Coast, Richmond and Port Adelaide. The Saints have had some injuries, but too many good players are struggling. If he manages to escape the axe this week, Bradley Hill must recapture the form that prompted the Saints to pay him a small fortune to move across from Fremantle at the start of last year.

NAB AFL Rising Star SEASON 2021 UPDATE

T

he Sydney Swans have led the way when it comes to unleashing young talent after three rounds of the 2021 season. The Swans have produced the first two NAB AFL Rising Star nominees this year and who knows it could be three after the youth-led upset win over reigning premier Richmond last weekend. At time of print, the round three nominee had not been announced. The round one Rising Star nominee was Errol Gulden after the 18-year-old made a sensational AFL debut

with 19 disposals, 10 marks and three goals in the Swans’ 31-point win over the Brisbane Lions. In the round two win over Adelaide, Braeden Campbell starred with 25 touches, six marks and a game-high 708m gained to claim back-to-back nominations for the club. The Swans have a decent record in the Rising Star award dating back to 1999 when Adam Goodes won the first of his many accolades in the game. Dan Hannebery won as a Swan in 2010 and Callum Mills claimed the award in 2016.

fter three completed rounds, the full effect of several new rule changes is starting to become apparent and the verdict is in – welcome back to the high-scoring, crowd-pleasing key forward. Footy in 2021 has been an intoxicating mix of fast, frenzied and unrelenting football, with the combination of the new stand rule, a drastic cutback of interchanges and the return to 20-minute quarters proving a winner. If the first two rounds were the emergence of the key forward, round three was the exclamation mark thanks to Adelaide’s Taylor Walker, Carlton’s Harry McKay, the Bulldogs’ Josh Bruce and even Essendon defender-turned-forward Cale Hooker, who booted five goals against St Kilda last Saturday. Rather than forwards being forced up the ground for large parts of matches – as has been commonplace in recent seasons – the combination of rule changes is seeing players stay deep inside 50. The overall look of the game and how heavily it is weighing on coaches right now was laid out by a candid Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge, who said the pressure has never been higher to play an attractive game of footy.

150 CLUB GAMES

“The pressure from the broadcasters and the AFL to play a certain brand has never been so heavy,” Beveridge said on SEN’s Crunch Time last week. “With the moving fixture and the opportunity to get prime-time fixtures with an attractive brand, our administration and operations share that common want to do that. “It’s enticing teams to score and that’s helping the game.” A large part of 2021 footy has largely centred on the key forward and there’s no better at the moment than Walker, who sits atop of the Coleman Medal tally after reinventing himself during the off-season. The Dogs would also be pleased with how Bruce is tracking, following his remarkable 10-goal game against North Melbourne on Good Friday.

mercurial small forward Kysaiah Pickett, whose highlight reel through three games this year is drawing comparisons with fellow indigenous freak shows Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts. here haven’t been as many big weeks as this one around the Melbourne Football Club for quite some time. The men’s team has started the season with three straight wins, which the Demons have not done since 2005. And the AFLW outfit is off to Adelaide Oval to play a preliminary final against Adelaide, and is a game off making the Grand Final for the first time. Simon Goodwin’s team made a preliminary final in 2018, but the past two seasons have been

major disappointments and talk in football circles is that he’ll need a return to the finals, at a minimum, to keep his job. He was dealt a harsh blow during the pre-season when injuries sidelined boom recruit Ben Brown and fellow key forward Sam Weideman. In seasons past, the Demons would hardly have made it out of the starting gates following such developments, but Goodwin has improvised superbly and appears to have an emerging star of the competition at his disposal in

Goodwin has improvised superbly

The women’s team has won five successive games, including a comprehensive 28-point win over Adelaide in round seven. The Demons withstood a huge challenge from Fremantle last week to win through to this week’s game against the Crows, but must now sweat on the availability of skipper Daisy Pearce, who hurt her knee in the final game of the home and away season. Melbourne finished third after both the 2017 and 2018 AFLW seasons, but in those eight-team seasons only a Grand Final was played. This might be the best opportunity for one of the pioneers of women’s football at the elite level to win a much-deserved premiership.

TRAVIS B AK

IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION Few players prepare more meticulously than Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak. Whether it’s a training session or a big final, the former Power captain leaves nothing to chance. ASHLEY BROWNE

M

ind. Body. Craft. Travis Boak has been on a quest for football perfection his entire career. Every football-related activity of every day of every season is centred around getting better at each of the above. It has earned him awe, admiration and adoration from everyone at Port Adelaide. That he is in career-best form at age 33 hasn’t escaped the attention of anyone at the Power, be they on the inside or those who follow the club. And nor does it surprise them. “I don’t think there’s ever been a player that I have seen who has invested so much into themselves as a person,” Port senior assistant coach Michael Voss said. It’s high praise indeed, given Voss’ own lofty standing in the game and the parade of champions who passed through the doors of the Gabba as the Brisbane teams he captained won three straight flags from 2001-03. “It’s incredible, really,” Port skipper Tom Jonas said when the conversation turned to the lengths to which Boak prepares for each season, and then each day once the season kicks into gear. There are some in footy who play down their preparation away from the club. Boak is happy to be an open book and in some way Port’s internal petri dish in that he is happy to share his learnings with his teammates. And there is a growing cohort, notably Sam Powell-Pepper, but also Ryan Burton, Mitch Georgiades and Miles Bergman, who some believe have similar character traits and are becoming similarly meticulous and uber-professional with their own preparation. “He’s that personality type where he’s fastidious about what he wants and he enjoys the routine of that never-ending pursuit of perfection and excellence,” Jonas said. “He’s always looking for that new way of doing things, that new technology, new training technique or someone who can help him from the mental side of things.”

“He doesn’t sit in the category where it must work for him or else,” Voss said. “It just works and the thing he’s been able to learn over time in searching for a better version of himself is he acknowledges that there are a lot of things he does very well, but also things he can still improve on.” Boak told the AFL Record the path to discovering what works for him is long and never-ending. “For any athlete, that’s just a process to see what works and makes you feel best come game-day,” he said.

THEN AND NOW: A dashing 18-year-old Travis Boak in his debut game in round 12, 2007, and (below left) in full flight in a dominant 2020 season.

“The only thing we can control is how we prepare for a game and how we go into a game and that’s what I have dialled into and for me it starts as soon as you finish the game the previous week. “I’ll start to write in my journal how I want to prepare my mind, my body and my craft and I can review that the night before the game and know if I’ve given myself the best opportunity to perform. “In a way, that relaxes you a lot more to know that you’ve given yourself the best chance and that’s where the detail is. “You can only work on three things – mind, body and craft.” Boak’s build-up for a new football season normally starts with a trip to an elite training facility and in recent years he has frequented both Nike and Red Bull in the United States. While there, he has learned from, and trained with, some of the best athletes in the world. He prefers not to name them, but a Google search does show a Nike campaign from 2016 where he and teammate Robbie Gray share equal billing with Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar and

arguably the greatest tennis star of all, Serena Williams. “It’s great to have access to that. They probably spend a bit more money than our footy club,” he said with a laugh. “We play different sports, but we’re all very similar, we have that athlete mindset and to learn off them is something I have enjoyed a lot and has helped me grow as a person as well. “That’s where I have learned to dial into what you can control and what you want to get out of every training session. “I go into the gym with a purpose. I go out on to the track with a purpose. “And it’s not just going out there to train and hope it goes well, but always asking, ‘What do I want to get out of this? What do I want out of this session? What can I get out of this recovery?’ “There’s a method behind everything and, when you understand that, you become better as an athlete.”

preliminary final, a shattering end to a year in which Port sat atop the ladder the entire season. COVID and its travel restrictions put paid to that. It had been a brilliant season for Boak as well. Averaging 28.5 disposals a game – the second most of his career – he polled 21 Brownlow Medal votes to finish second behind Lachie Neale and earned his third All-Australian blazer, his first since 2014. He was also named as vice-captain. “He was running the opposition off their legs,” Jonas said. “He would get from contest to contest and they couldn’t go with him.” But the Power couldn’t get over Richmond when it counted most in the preliminary final and Boak said it took him six weeks to fully absorb it. The hurt was far deeper than 2014 when the Power almost stole the preliminary final from the heavily-favoured Hawthorn. “The game was just constant the whole time. It was battle after battle after battle and to come out of it not as the winner was disappointing,” he said. Compounding it all was the thought he might have blown his best shot at winning a flag. He played in the horror show that was the 119-point loss to Geelong in the 2007 Grand Final at the end of his first season, but Port’s 2020 team stacked up as the best in his time at the club. “Robbie and I had a chat about it. We’re late in our careers now and I walked off the ground thinking that it might be my last chance,” Boak said.

12    AFL RECORD

“It stuck in my mind for six weeks that we might never get a chance again and that pain stayed with me. “I allowed myself to feel that way and work through it, but after that I thought to myself that we are in an exciting position at this footy club because we have such an amazing group and I’m so grateful to be part of it.” Boak has long been emotionally invested in Port Adelaide. “The best way to describe Port is that it is like a country footy club,” he said. “What I mean by that is kind of like our own little community. There’s so much history here and it’s like that feeling you get from being involved in a local footy club.” Boak would recognise that better than most. He still harbours strong ambitions to one day play for Torquay, the Bellarine Football League powerhouse where his late father Roger played 200 games. There has always been that pull home to the Victorian surf coast and Geelong came close to luring him at the end of 2012, when coach Chris Scott and a high-powered delegation brazenly marched into Adelaide to make their pitch. Boak was torn between two families, but with the blessing of one, he chose to remain with the other. “There’s this family-like atmosphere and you can’t leave it,” he said of Port. “It’s so enjoyable being here. When you walk inside these four walls, it’s

a place where you feel at home and it is why guys who come here love it. You have another family.” Boak handed the captaincy to Jonas at the end of 2018 after six years. It might have been just the spur he needed, that little spark to push himself and his football just that little bit further. “Everyone says post 30 you can’t play your best footy, but I don’t buy into that,” Boak said. “I’m enjoying my footy as much as ever and trying to put as much effort into my mind and body to start as fresh as possible. It’s what I can control. “I seem to feel OK most weeks and that’s up there with why I’m able to stay on the park and consistently perform.” Port enters Friday night’s blockbuster against Richmond with its premiership window wide ajar, despite a 37-point loss to West Coast at Optus Stadium last week. Boak, who has this year and next remaining on his contract and needs 15 games to break Port’s games record, knows the chance of the fairytale finish to his career is on the cards. “We are going to get the opportunity to go forward and push again because this group is exciting,” he said. “They want to improve, they want to get better and, after that initial pain (last year), that’s what I could see. That’s what’s motivating me to be part of this group and go further again.” And more than most, it will be Boak who will show them how to get there.

Included in the latest stellar performance was 10 marks, 15 kicks, six handballs and 13 score involvements as the Bulldogs piled on 25 goals. After Bruce’s difficult debut season with the Dogs in 2020, coach Luke Beveridge was delighted the former St Kilda and GWS forward was able to find some form. “We’re just so pleased for him,” Beveridge told SEN’s Crunch Time. “He worked so hard last year under trying circumstances. “He’s smelling the roses, no doubt about it.” It was the first time a Bulldogs player has kicked a bag of 10 since Simon Beasley back in 1987. THE BOMBERS’ BAROMETER INJURY CHECK u Ask any Essendon fan

who’s the one player they want to see up and about, the most likely answer is Jake Stringer. The Bombers were at long odds going into last Saturday’s clash against St Kilda at Marvel Stadium after a lacklustre effort the previous week against Port Adelaide. But enter Stringer in his first game back from a series of leg injuries over the pre-season. He was ‘on’ from the opening bounce, kicking the first of his four goals after just 45 seconds. The former Bulldogs premiership player was at his bouncy and confident best in a timely reminder of not only his talent, but how injuries have impacted his career. Last year an ankle complaint kept him to just 10 games and his preparation coming into 2021 was limited. But fully fit and with his swagger back, there is no more exciting player in the competition.

ANSWER MAN Across history, we have seen many players who had animal surnames or nicknames. Can you tell us about some of them?

with LACHLAN ESSING u In the final round of 2007, Essendon bid farewell to two of its greats – captain James Hird, in his 253rd match, and Kevin Sheedy, who had coached the Bombers for 27 seasons. Essendon trailed reigning premier West Coast by 44 points at three-quarter time at Subiaco Oval. Enter Scott Lucas. Within 17 minutes, the Bombers had cut the margin to 14 points, with Lucas kicking five goals thanks to some strong marking and a booming left foot. A behind to the Eagles was followed by another two goals to Lucas to give him seven for the quarter and eight for the match, but at the 22-minute mark, Essendon still trailed by three points.

NAME GAME: Andrew ‘Rat’ Bews and John ‘Horse’ Longmire were stars of the 1980s and ‘90s.

WILLIAM SIMMONDS, BROOME, WA LE: Carlton rover Adrian Gleeson went by the nickname ‘Bear’ and his 176 games between 1986-96 included the 1987 premiership. Craig Bird was a premiership midfielder for the Swans in 2012 and played the last of his 157 career games in 2017 after switching to the Bombers. John Fox played 60 games for the Cats in the 1960s after crossing from a rugby background. He had a rugby-style approach to the game and once ran 40m without bouncing the ball, as he forgot he was playing Australian Football. Brian Roberts, known as the ‘Whale’, was a giant ruckman for the Tigers and the Swans. One the heaviest players to have played the game, he once weighed in at 120kg. North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey was famously known as ‘Duck’. The nickname came early in his career, as he used to waddle when he walked and ran.

North Melbourne sharpshooter Phil Baker went by the nickname ‘Snake’ and was renowned for his high marking. Andrew Bews was well known as ‘Rat’ and, despite his diminutive size, was recognised as one of the League’s toughest players.

CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information regarding the following former players – Noel Alford (North Melbourne 1952-53), Pat Audas (Richmond 1952-54), Noel Carroll (Fitzroy 1951, 1953), Charlie Clymo (St Kilda 1907-09), Peter Cook (Melbourne 1956-58), Roy Cullinan (South Melbourne 1953), Neil McNeill (South Melbourne 1955-56), Len Metherell (Geelong 1930-36), Frank Mockridge (Geelong 1925-31), Fred Mundy (Geelong 1959; Richmond 1960), Bob Troughton (Geelong 1930-35) and Jack Williams (Geelong 1925-34).

If you can assist, contact Col Hutchinson at col.hutchinson@afl.com.au.

After a tense couple of minutes, Lucas scored a behind, but West Coast replied with a goal to Brent Staker to snuff out a fairytale finish for Hird and Sheedy. Lucas retired at the end of 2009 with 471 goals in 270 games. MARK GENGE

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u Scores of 70 and 60 in the first two rounds had Andrew Gaff (154) owners hovering over the trade button after paying top dollar for him. In fact, 2100 coaches pulled the trigger and moved him on … but for those who held their nerve, the reward was the highest score of the season. Gaff collected 36 disposals and 13 marks, which was far different to his first two outings where it looked like the outside runner wasn’t going to enjoy the free-flowing footy that has seen him average 110 for the past three seasons. If you want him, he’s potentially at the lowest price point he could get to this season.

u Key forwards are in vogue this season. Taylor Walker (136) is a surprise Coleman Medal leader after booting another six goals. Josh Bruce (152) booted 10, while Harry McKay (137) kicked seven. Brodie Grundy (152) is keen to regain his title of the No. 1 Fantasy ruck after posting ‘video game’ numbers in the Pies’ narrow loss to the Lions, while Jordan Ridley (124) is getting plenty of bonus points taking Essendon’s kick-ins.

After a dominant performance the previous week, found it a bit tougher last week against the Eagles. Finished with 16 touches and just 58 points, but he is better than that and will bounce back.

With key personnel missing and the Blues’ first win of the season, this was the speedster’s big chance to impress. Unfortunately, he still didn’t make an impact with just 11 touches and 33 points.

‘Tex’ has turned back the clock on the back of some favourable rule changes and his scoring has reflected that. Had a night out with six goals and 136 which gives him another negative break-even leading into a match-up with the Roos.

Had his first lapse of the season last week against the Blues. Finished with 19 touches and just 63 points, well short of the high bar he has set. Give him another run at home to regain the faith.

The talented Docker hasn’t started the season the way his owners hoped and his price is set to plummet after a thumping corkie and being subbed out on 24. Worth looking into an upgrade to Giant Issac Cumming, who continued his good form with 91.

STEPHEN CONIGLIO

GWS GIANTS MID

If you are in need of a downgrade, the second-year Lion is a great option. In his first game for the year, he had an outstanding all-round performance with 17 touches, seven marks and seven tackles for 93.

As much as the set-and-forget ruck strategy is alive and well, if you have Flynn carrying out the duties, he deserves to stay there. Held his own against Max Gawn from a scoring standpoint with 24 hit-outs and 78 points.

u The rolling lockout can be challenging as sometimes decisions need to be made without team selections finalised. Back yourself in with your trades, but make sure you’ve got emergencies ready.

u Injuries and suspensions are a big part of the game and I’ve had my fair share. Use them as an opportunity to fix your team either by getting the in-form players or the top-scoring cash cows.

u “Hold your premiums” is something we preach. After not listening to our advice a fortnight ago when I traded Max Gawn, I held strong with Andrew Gaff and was handsomely rewarded.

The luckless skipper looks to have suffered a bad ankle injury in his side’s loss to the Dees. He went down early in the game on just 26 and will need to be moved on this week. ALSO CONSIDER: Jordan De Goey, Nick Haynes, Tom Green

SYDNEY SWANS

Match Preview

u Sydney is the undoubted surprise packet of the season. The red-hot Swans sounded a warning to the rest of the competition by beating reigning premier Richmond by 45 points at the MCG to make it three straight wins to start 2021. A blend of youth and experience, slick ball movement and manic pressure has transformed John Longmire’s side from ugly ducklings to beautiful Swans. It’s the first time Sydney has started a season 3-0 since making the 2016 Grand Final, and after finishing 16th with five wins last season, the Swans look every bit a finals team at this early stage. They host Essendon which has its tail up

after dismantling St Kilda by 75 points in one of the shocks of the season. The Bombers were scintillating from start to finish, piling on 22 goals to record their first win of 2021 after starting the year with two losses and a host of injuries. It was also Ben Rutten’s first victory as senior coach since taking the reins from John Worsfold. Essendon got the better of Sydney in its last visit to the SCG, sneaking home by a goal in a round two thriller last season. The resurgent Swans are playing some irresistible football and should be too strong at home. ALEX ZAIA

Highest score: 36.20 (236), round 17, 1987, at the SCG. Lowest score: 0.9 (9), round 3, 1899, at East Melbourne Cricket Ground; 1.3 (9), round 15, 1901 at Lake Oval. Home record: 58-60-1. Away record: 31-73. Greatest winning margin: 163 points, round 17, 1987, at the SCG. Longest winning sequence: 8, round 6, 1915, to round 12, 1920; round 11, 2012, to second elimination final, 2017, at the SCG. Most goals in a game: 15, Bob Pratt, round 3, 1934, at the Lake Oval.

ESSENDON

Highest score: 28.16 (184), round 18, 1964, at Windy Hill. Lowest score: 1.4 (10), round 8, 1900, at the Lake Oval. Away record: 60-58-1. Home record: 73-31. Greatest winning margin: 165 points, round 18, 1964, at Windy Hill. Longest winning sequence: 9, round 14, 1959, to round 18, 1964; round 18, 1971, to round 13, 1975. Most goals in a game: 13, Matthew Lloyd, round 3, 1999, at the MCG.

Prediction: Sydney by 15 points

Match Preview

u Friday night footy will serve up a rematch of last year’s epic preliminary final. Richmond edged out Port Adelaide by six points at Adelaide Oval in the penultimate round in 2020 before going on to win the flag. This week, the Tigers return to the scene of the crime on the back of a humbling 45-point defeat at the hands of the exciting Sydney. The Power find themselves in a similar position at 2-1 following their out-of-character 37-point loss to West Coast in Perth in which they kicked just two goals in the first half. There is little doubt both Ken Hinkley and Damien Hardwick would have

RICHMOND had some sobering words for their respective playing groups this week as they prepare for the blockbuster clash. Port can take some solace from the fact it improved after half-time last week and being back on its home deck in front of a partisan crowd will be a benefit. In the other camp, the Tigers played an at times lazy and uncharacteristic brand against the Swans and there is only one way to respond. However, they have a few aspects to work on and, although they’ve produced some backs-to-the-wall wins here in the past, the Power appear a stronger side than before. ANDREW SLEVISON

Prediction: Port Adelaide by eight points

NORTH MELBOURNE

ON THE REBOUND: Star ruckman Todd Goldstein will be desperate for the Roos to bounce back after last week’s big loss.

Match Preview u North Melbourne fans have every right to

question the direction of their club after a 128-point belting from the Western Bulldogs on Good Friday, but nonetheless, they should be brimming with anticipation ahead of this one. Will the Kangas get the win? Probably not, but they’ll be intrigued to see what tangible steps coach David Noble took during the week to ensure there will be no repeat of last week’s meek performance. Certainly, the Roos need to be harder around the ball. They’re also not running out games, which should raise alarm bells and might not be as easily

fixed. Still, when the fixture came out at the start of the season, this shaped as a winnable game and the Crows, despite their impressive start to the season, will always face question marks when they play away from home as they go about their rebuild. The good news story for Adelaide has been evergreen spearhead Taylor Walker, who has kicked 17 goals through three matches, and either Josh Walker or Ben McKay will likely have their hands full. They’ll need some midfield pressure up the field on the likes of Rory Sloane, Brodie Smith, Rory Laird and Paul Seedsman or it will be another long afternoon at Marvel Stadium. ASHLEY BROWNE

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Footy, it’s great to have you back After compromised seasons in some states last year and no football at all in Victoria, normal service resumes this weekend.

T

he first part of the football puzzle back in the game’s heartland has been completed. The AFLW home and away season has been run and done and the finals are underway. The men’s season is three rounds in with large and loud (witness the euphoria when the Bulldogs knocked over the Eagles a fortnight ago) but not necessarily capacity crowds. The return of big-time football has been a boon not just to those directly employed by the game. According to figures compiled by the League in 2019, in addition to the 24,500 jobs created by the game, another 24,750 full-time jobs were generated to service the wider football industry. They might work in the food and drink venues in and around each stadium. They might make footys at the Sherrin factory, press buttons at Fox Footy, clean and maintain stadiums or scan supporters in at the entry gate. These numbers probably won’t return to pre-COVID levels this year, but a sizeable part of the economy has been generated once more with the return of League football. But it will only be this weekend that community footy will once more resume normal transmission. About 1.7 million people play football around Australia. Nearly 500,000 of them come from Victoria,

94  AFL RECORD

CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION: Most country and suburban football competitions will kick off this weekend for the first time in 20 months, including Mid-Gippsland League clubs Stony Creek and Foster, who last took to the field in the Grand Final of the now defunct Alberton League in 2019.

Hamstrings and groins will be groaning once more

the birthplace and the heartland of the game, and after an interminable 20-month wait, footy grounds across that state, from Auskick through to veterans, will be filled again with the sounds of cheers and tears, whistles, sirens blaring and car horns tooting. Pie ovens will be switched on again, the beer kegs will flow. Hamstrings and groins will be groaning once more. Victorians did it tough through much of last year and compounding the pain was that, unlike their state, the rest of the country got to have football seasons of their own, even in abridged form. South Australian football was back in action in late June and within three weeks every other state in the country returned. There will be great rejoicing over the next few days as some 1200 clubs across 92 leagues in Victoria get their seasons going again for the first time since the end of 2019 and join the rest of the country in taking part in Australia’s national game. But they enter the season facing great challenges. For example, footy clubs draw much support from local businesses, but how many of them have emerged unscathed after the economy tanked them last year? Can they still tip in the few thousand dollars required each year to help support the local footy club?

JobKeeper is finished and local footballers might now have less disposable income than before. Salary caps across the state have been slashed by half to $100,000. Is it still worth it for a suburban or country footballer to play? Until enough people are vaccinated, the health and safety requirements around playing are more stringent and therefore more labour intensive. Will there be enough volunteers for those endless odd jobs, not always so glamorous, that are required to run grassroots clubs? These are the sorts of issues that have been across the desk of Brad Scott, the former Brisbane star and North Melbourne coach who, following a reshuffle at the AFL last year, found himself the new chief executive of AFL Victoria. There has been a disconnect between head office and clubs and leagues across Victoria and that has been a major focus since he inherited the job. Having local footy back this weekend will continue the healing across Victoria. It is a cause for celebration. Get out and watch a game if you can. But the joy felt across Victoria will not mask the repair work that needs to be done to a game and an industry that, like so many others, suffered so much damage just a year ago.
