UMHLANGA TO BALLITO

T

HERE has been an interesting and rather alarming development in Ballito of late that very few people are aware of. You may have noticed a flurry of activity on pavements and verges in the affluent leafy parts of residential Ballito as teams of workmen dug trenches for the laying of fibre optic cables in a bid to connect Ballito to the digital world. These trenches were also dug through roads and driveways with assurance from supervisors that they would repair the damage as a matter of urgency. Then the work stopped. A week went by and then a second and still there was no sign of work commencing. Behind the scenes a drama was unfolding, somewhat reminiscent of the gangster

movie, Goodfellas. The company contracted to do the work had been approached by elements from the taxi industry presenting themselves as a Business Forum and demanding forty percent of the value of the contract. Some of the negotiation was done at gunpoint according to my sources and some of their personnel were assaulted to ensure that the work stopped. Apparently the contractor agreed to share the contract on the basis that the Business Forum provided the labour but there were technicalities that couldn’t be overcome that mitigated against this. What was particularly interesting here is that this entire saga was going down in the midst of a concerted effort on the part of the UIP and municipality to get the town spruced up ahead of the Ballito Pro Surfing Competition and yet, no one in authority seemed to be aware of it.

As we were directly affected by the work stoppage with piles of sand and rubble obstructing the pavement outside our HQ and a trench across the road that remained untarred and was getting deeper by the day, I started making enquiries. Luckily this led to a resolution of sorts, albeit a temporary one, to allow the work to continue for a limited period to get the bulk of the job done. Apparently a fee was levied and paid and work duly commenced. There is still some work to be done to restore the roads, driveways and verges but the dark fibre seems to have now been laid. A rather sinister precedent has, however, been set and I am concerned about the future development of the region if these tactics are allowed to continue. I think that you should be too.

Here’s hoping for a positive reaction and a brighter outlook for the future of our really super part of the country. Welcome to another issue of Life & Style also online at www.lifeandstyle.fm.

MANGO GROOVE Coming Back to Ballito

I

T was a cold and freakishly rainy Sunday afternoon in Ballito, last year May, when Mango Groove opened the very first Marriott Ballito Beats concert to an intimate North Coast crowd. It rained, and rained, and rained some more but the show went on and Claire Johnston and her musically gifted fusion band performed to passionate fans who danced in the rain and sang along to their favourite songs. At the end of the show, Mango Groove promised us they would be back. And now, a year later and Ballito locals can count their “special stars” that Mango Groove will be performing again, on the grassy music at a young age. Maqhinga Radebe lawns of Sugar Rush Park. HAT does

winter mean for a surfer up in KZN? Land breeze winds that shape the waves into perfect smooth faces, longer rides as the wind holds up the wave, wetsuits to ward off the cold wind that blows from as far as the Drakensberg and the odd cold front out of the roaring forties that brings those big waves and those perfect tubes. All sounds good if you are a surfer but, for the rest, it’s cold mornings and cold evenings - definitely not bikini beach weather until surfing comes to town with the Ballito Pro… then, all the “oh no its too cold for the beach” gets thrown out of the window and its summer bikini beach babes for that one week of winter. Sitting down on the beach, there is a lot you can learn by just watching people go about their business trying to become a part of the big Ballito Pro vibe. The fools of fashion are all there trying to fit in, which in itself is just downright entertaining. Whatever is trending in the fashion world is on display, so if you are wondering what your next

fashion wardrobe might be, don’t watch the fashion channel on the TV you can get it all down on the beach. The visiting surfers have surfboards covered in sponsors’ logos, fancy wetsuits that cost as much or more than a surfboard. But for every surfer it’s a time to do a stock take on what you could add to your wardrobe or what is coming out of the surfboard shaping bays that could give your next board the edge. They say that a surfer cannot multi task. Well, I watch the surfers sitting on the beach studying their favourite surfer performing out on the water and he will talk you through every move and how he is planning to throw those moves into his own surfing. Then ask him how that lady was that just walked in front of him and he will give a pretty accurate description of what she was about. Quite interesting. There is certainly a lot of entertainment activity associated with this event, from food to music - it’s all there, and it has certainly put Ballito on the map. So, get on down to Ballito’s main beach, and for 10 days in the middle of winter, you will find your place in the sun .

H

I Everyone,

Have you ever purchased something, expecting that the advice and knowledge that has been given to you on the product has been 100% and you can just go ahead and operate the item on the advice given? We live in a pretty fast paced world and need to keep up with the latest technology. This really is not difficult if we have been given good, solid, advice from the source of purchase. Of course we need to read the operators instructions to back up the advice, but it’s usually the advice from the brand ambassador or salesperson that sticks and if it’s wrong, it leaves us wondering about the trustworthiness of the supplier. One of our readers recently had a torrid experience with a local electron-

to spread the news that the company concerned is not to be trusted. “They advertise that they are the experts, but this is far from the truth.” She points out. Retailers cannot afford to have their reputations damaged like this. Consumer trust is essential for them to grow and maintain their customer base. For an untrained salesman to be put in charge of selling a high end computer product is unacceptable and customer concerned is now taking the matter up with the retailers management team. Says Dion Chang, innovator, creative thinker, visionary and renowned trend analyst “Trust isn’t a commodity that can be purchased. It is an asset that much be earned through transparency and truthfulness. Consumers want brands to give them information that

Chubb is rebranded to national seCurity & Fire

ics supplier who she assumed would know exactly what they were talking about when she purchased her computer from them. The computer was on a special and the salesman (clearly in a hurry to make his target for the month) gave a convincing sales pitch on the product. The customer assumed that he knew what he was talking about. When she got home and worked on the computer with the instructions given, she discovered that the sales person really didn’t have much of a clue about the computer and she ended up paying for someone to come in and re do settings that had wrongly been put into place at the point of purchase. Needless to say she was furious and is likely

will affect them even if it is negative. Today, nothing can be kept hidden from savvy consumers, so if you try to lie or bury the truth, you will erode their trust in you. Consumers have the right to make an informed decision on what they buy, and you can have the best marketing campaigns in the world, but if consumers don’t trust you because you act unethically, then they will simply switch to another brand! WAYS THAT PROCESSED FOODS ARE DIFFERENT TO WHOLE FOODS

P

ROCESSED foods have been accused of increasing rates of disease, harming the environment, and driving up healthcare expenses. But what exactly is it that makes Whole Foods that much healthier than Processed or Fast Foods? Many of us can argue the fact that we should eat less processed foods and fast foods. But how many of us could describe exactly why? By definition, processed foods are those which have undergone specific food engineering. They are mass-produced, have the same properties from batch to batch, use specialized ingredients, and have a long freezer or shelf-life. This definition doesn’t really tell us why they differ from whole foods however, and these differences are vast! 1. Low Levels of Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants Processed foods contain far too few vitamins and minerals, known as micronutrients. These micronutrients are absolutely essential for the proper functioning of every system in the body. They are vital for health – think Vitamin C for the immune system or Magnesium for stress, muscle cramps or sleep issues etc. 2. Low Levels of Fiber The majority of processed foods have a significantly lower fiber content than whole foods. Fiber is important for gut health, which in turn impacts overall health. Fiber not only keeps your digestive system regular and eliminates toxins, but also feeds our beneficial gut bacteria. 3. High Levels of Fructose Fructose is commonly used as a sweetener in processed foods (High Fructose Corn Syrup for example). Fructose is a type of sugar that gets broken down in the liver in a similar manner to alcohol. Excess fructose intake can eventually lead to liver damage and fatty liver disease, much like excess alcohol intake. 4. Low Levels of Omega 3 Omega 3 fatty acids are called “essential” because our bodies are not able to produce them, and we instead need to get them from our diet. These are our primary anti-inflammatory nutrients, and also play a crucial role in brain health, memory and concentration. Omega 3 fatty acids are primarily found in fish and nuts and are not generally found in processed foods. 5. High Levels of Omega 6 Omega 6 fatty acids are also “essential” in that we need to obtain them primarily through the

KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

diet. However, Omega 6 in excess amounts can actually be pro-inflammatory to the body. We need a balanced ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in the diet for a healthy body. Omega 6 fatty acids are widespread in seed oils, which are commonly used in processed foods. A high intake of processed foods thus throws out the balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6, and can lead to a pro-inflammatory state. 6. Excess Unhealthy Fats We are learning more and more that we should not fear the fats found in whole foods. This does not apply to the fats found in processed foods however. The oils and fats used in processed foods are generally heated to very high temperatures or processed in a manner that changes them into compounds known as Trans Fats. Trans Fats are known causes of heart disease. 7. Excess Branched Chain Amino Acids Processed foods tend to contain a high level of branched chain amino acids. Branched chain amino acids are necessary for building muscle and are commonly used by athletes looking to bulk up. However, when a person eats too many branched chain amino acids, the excess may be taken to the liver and converted into fat stores. 8. Excess Sodium This comes as no shock to us all, but processed foods contain more salt than whole foods. Excess salt in the diet is linked with high blood pressure and heart disease. 9. Excess Nitrates Nitrates are compounds found in cured and processed meats such as bacon, sausages, salami etc. These are classed as Type 1 Carcinogens by the World Health Organization, and high intakes of these food products has been linked to colon cancer. To put this into perspective, tobacco products are also a Type 1 Carcinogen. Final Thoughts Education is power, and whilst we are all for balance in life, it is important to make educated choices when it comes to our diet. What we feed ourselves with today will impact our health for years to come. Processed foods can either be empty calories (meaning zero nutrition with high calories) or overtly harmful to the body. When we choose a whole foods based diet, we get foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and essential fats, all of which contribute to a long and healthy life!

A Weekend to Remember

Looking for a Luxury Getaway without going Globetrotting? Plan a Weekend to Remember at Fairmont Zimbali Resort

MIKE CHARLES

L

IVING in a coastal town like Ballito, one often has a fill of sun, sand and surf – a mix of elemental factors that are the envy of city-slickers who frequently pop down to the coast to escape the noise and confusion of the urban jungle. However, while your local beach hangout often provides just the right medicine to soothe the anxieties of modern life, human nature urges us to go wandering from time to time to find the kind of fresh perspective and relaxed headspace that can only be achieved with a holiday. Maybe you’ve been putting it off because of all the deadlines at work. Maybe you’ve been meaning to get around to it but have been waiting to find cheaper flights… Or maybe you’re just dreading the thought of spending a day driving across the country (and a day driving back) for a relaxing weekend away, knowing that any “relaxing” will surely be undone by the stress of having to contend with highway traffic. I know the feeling. I recently found myself weighing up travel options whilst feeling the pressure of having to plan a weekend away to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, when I was struck by a revelation. There is a destination merely minutes away from the centre of Ballito that offers the perfect mix of luxurious accommodation, eclectic dining options, sumptuous spa treatments, and the kind of worldclass hotel amenities and service that you would expect from an elite international resorts group… I am of course referring to the fabulous Fairmont Zimbali Resort.

Situated inside the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate, the beachfront Fairmont Zimbali Resort hotel is renowned for its legendary hospitality and attention to detail aimed at creating an atmosphere of pure paradise. And since that is exactly the kind of atmosphere I was hoping to achieve with a weekend away, I decided to make a booking. With my limited events-planning skills, I enlisted the help of Fairmont Zimbali’s friendly and accommodating reservations team to craft an itinerary of events for our stay, ensuring that my girlfriend and I would have the full Fairmont experience from our Friday arrival right through to departure on Sunday. I was now on track to score serious brownie points. With the birthday weekend finally upon us, we arrived on a sunny Friday afternoon for a warm welcome and check-in, and were escorted to a beautifully appointed room with stunning sea views and lush greenery outside our 3rd-story balcony. After settling in, we headed to the first dining option on our itinerary - the Dalchini lobby lounge - for a decadent high tea. The birthday celebrations had begun! Once that sweet tooth had been satisfied, our next item on the agenda was pre-dinner drinks at the sophisticated 31 Degrees, which afforded an opportunity to sample the exclusive cocktails off the Fairmont’s “Classics Perfected” menu (I ordered a superb Old Fashioned, if you’re wondering). For dinner, we headed to the Coral Tree international buffet restaurant for a startling array of transcontinental flavours with a superb accompany-

ing wine-list. The next day saw us having breakfast overlooking the gorgeous pooldeck and landscaped gardens, before retreating to catch a bit of the Royal Wedding television pre-coverage in the comfort of our room, and then it was on to a marvellous Mexican fiesta at the poolside Ayoba restaurant. Ariba! Later, while Meghan and Harry were trying the knot, we were getting the royal treatment with an aromatherapy couples massage at the wonderful Willow Stream Spa, after which my beloved was treated to a wash and blow wave in the Blow Dry Bar (I might’ve joined her if I had more hair to let down). The wining and dining continued with pre-dinner drinks at the elegant Vinum bar before experiencing the transcendental aromatic spices of an Indian Fusion meal at the famous OSA restaurant. On our final morning, we soaked up the spacious comfort of our room by ordering room service for an in-room champagne breakfast. As the bubbly settled, there was no doubt that the birthday weekend had been a complete success. While we felt like we’d been away in another country for the past few days, in 10 minutes we were back home, feeling recharged and ready to tackle the new week after a weekend to remember. Whether you’re looking for a dinner reservation for a special occasion or a magical weekend away, contact Fairmont Zimbali Resort and let them turn your moments into memories. Once the mixture has fully cooled add the remaining whipped cream, 3T spiced chai

powder and cinnamon and spoon the mixture into a piping bag. Place the piping bag in the freezer to firm up for 15 minutes. 7. Lay your sheets of phyllo out and brush the one side with melted butter, sprinkle the remaining spiced chai powder onto the sheets of phyllo and fold in half. Cut the buttery chai phyllo sandwich in half and in half again. 8. Roll your phyllo pastry rectangles onto oven proof metal rods and bake for 15 minutes or until golden. 9. Remove from the oven, and leave to cool slightly before pulling them off the metal rod. 10. Once removed from the metal rod, fill each little hollow cigar with your delicious spiced creamy mixture. 11. Seal off each end by dipping them into the finely chopped pistachios and serve.

HUMMER OR G-WAGEN:

Suzuki reveals a new Jimny for the first time in 20 years

C

HEAP to run, almost impossible to break and capable of taking you just about anywhere a set of wheels can go, the Suzuki Jimny long ago became the utilitarian 4x4 for cashstrapped off-road enthusiasts. Now the Japanese carmaker has revealed its latest Jimny 4x4 for 2019 - the first new version for two decades - and it might just be the cutest new car of the year. With its stretched grille, cheery oval headlamps and squared-off wheel arches, the new Suzuki Jimny looks like it could be the love child of a Hummer and the equally battle-ready Mercedes G-Wagen. To say the old Jimny is a little long in the tooth is an understatement. It’s remained pretty much unchanged since it went on sale in 1998 and would probably flunk the existing crash tests worse than a GCSE student with a severe case of gaming disorder.

And they might be surprised by the no-frills 4x4s shrunken resemblance to a Hummer. The Jimny, which originally went into production in its earliest form in the 1970s, has garnered a decent-size fan club. In 2019 Suzuki will usher in this fourth generation car, which has already been confirmed for sale in South Africa. These are the first images of the updated SUV, and we’re already impressed by the boxy - and quite frankly adorable - looks. There’s no question that it could pass as the offspring of the comically enormous Hummer range of military vehicles.

of the dashboard found in the two-decade old version it replaces.

Fortunately, fans of the budget-priced off-roader will be glad to see this updated version.

The new Jimny comes in a squared-off body with about as many curves as a door frame.

However, it will be updated with a touchscreen infotainment system, chunkier switches and fresh-faced instrument cluster maintained in a superbly retro boxy housing.

B A L L I T O

This, combined with the jacked-up body and round headlights, also strikes a likeness to the Mercedes G-Class (aka G-Wagen), which has a similar military-bred background to the Hummer.

With Suzuki unwilling to expand on the previous-generation’s miniature dimensions, the boot is likely to be as dinky as the one we know now and just two rear seats will be offered instead of a bench to sit three passengers.

Suzuki says the new-for-2019 car will continue to use a basic ladder-frame chassis, uncomplicated three-link rigid axle suspension and part-time four wheel drive to keep production - and purchase - costs as low as possible.

There’s no word yet on the engines it will use, but we expect to see it come with one of two petrol engines: either the long-developed 1.2-litre Dualjet motor or the latest 1.0-litre Boosterjet powerplant that’s crammed under the bonnet of the latest Swift supermini.

It will also retain the raised cab, barely-there wheelbase and minimal overhangs at each corner.

Automative Aircon Repairs

That means it should be able to cope with any hilly incline or mountain decent you throw at it and bounce over even the most boulder-riddled terrain.

AUTO ELECTRICAL AND BATTERY SALES AND REPAIRS VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS

But while it looks like it will be able to tackle every off-road obstacle imaginable, the long-travel suspension hints at the small SUV having all the cornering prowess of a bouncy castle on wheels.

SHOP 27 KYALAMI PARK BALLITO TEL:032 9460341 FAX: 032 9460351

Thanks to the modest revolutionary touches, the robust Jimny will stay true to its cheap and cheerful values. Therefore you shouldn’t expect to see official prices rise much further above the fee you have to pay for Suzuki’s compact SUV today. That’s a refreshing thought in a world where other car makers are competing to offer the fastest, most luxurious, and most expensive 4x4s ever.

Inside, very little has been done to overhaul the shape

The Jeep Renegade – 2019 Facelift

T

HE Jeep Renegade was first launched back in 2014 and made its debut in South Africa a year later in 2015.

It was a big step forward for Jeep as the Renegade was the brand’s first foray into the B-segment and it was the first Jeep to be assembled in Italy. The Fiat 500X also shared a platform with the Renegade, although has not been as successful locally. A facelifted version has been announced and, on the back of record sales for the Jeep brand in Europe, the new-look Renegade will subsequently be rolled out to the rest of the world. Visually, it has not changed dramatically and still retains those rugged Jeep looks. The key changes include all-new engines, more safety features and updates to the infotainment system. Starting with the engines, there is a new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol motor pushing out 90 kW and 190 Nm. Next up is a 1.3-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol with 110 kW and 270 Nm. There are revisions to the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines too. All Jeep Renegades can be mated to a sixspeed manual gearbox, 6-speed dual-clutch transmission or nine-speed automatic. Inside, the new 2019 Jeep Renegade is available with one of three infotainment

systems depending on trim. There’s an UconnectTM 5-inch, UconnectTM 7-inch or UconnectTM 8.4-inch with navigation. All feature touchscreens and uprated processors for faster responsiveness. The climate control and audio controls have been merged into this system, reducing the number of buttons in the cabin. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are also available. It’ll be one of the safest vehicles in its class and has six airbags and ESC as standard. Also in the mix is ERM (Electronic Rollover Mitigation) which attempts to reduce the chance of the vehicle overturning. The Jeep Renegade now has Lane Sense Departure Warning Plus and Intelligent Speed Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition. It can also park itself automatically. As an option, you can specify some semi-autonomous safety features in the form of Forward Collision Warning with Active Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control. The 2019 Jeep Renegade is available in four flavours: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is the most off-road-focused Renegade available and it boasts ground clearance of up to 210 mm as well as dedicated off-road modes. Local specifications and details will be confirmed closer to the launch in early 2019.
