BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

W

E have just passed the anniversary of some deeply significant historical events that occurred, not too far from here.

January 22nd, 1879, was a day that would change the course of world history and have direct bearing on how I ended up with my family in Ballito, as strange as this might seem. You see, it was on this day that the then global superpower, the British Empire, would be dealt a military blow that would shake her to the very core and ultimately topple the British government of the day. Beneath a mountain in Zululand called Isandlwana, not too far from here, a modern British army was destroyed by what they considered nothing more than a “primitive bunch of howling savages armed with sticks”. But this modern British army led by the famous 24th Regiment of Foot, soon learnt how dangerous it could be to underestimate these People of the Sky – the abakwaZulu – whose land they had invaded. They paid a terrible price for it on that day. 1329 British soldiers and their colonial allies died beneath that mountain. Fifty two of them were Imperial British officers, more than were killed at Waterloo. It was unthinkable and the world was stunned by the news. And when the Boers in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, who had shortly before this been annexed to

the British Crown, saw how easily the British army wasdefeated by the Zulus who they had resoundingly thumped at Blood River, they rose up took back their land. This was the first Boer War. And if diamonds and gold hadn’t been found here, there probably wouldn’t have been a second one with the horror of the genocide, concentration camps and trenches that came with it. Oh yes, those bastions of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man were all pioneered right here on our blood soaked soil. Actually, there were a number of military firsts in the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 – the first machine gun ever used in action was a Gatling gun fired by midshipman Coker at the Zulus near Eshowe. He lies there still, beneath a crumbling stone in a forgotten overgrown cemetery about an hour’s drive from here. The first two posthumous Victoria Cross recipients in history, Lieutenants Melville and Coghill, lie where they fell beneath a bigger stone on the bank above the Buffalo River about three hours’ drive from here. They died trying to save the Queen’s Colour from the Zulus on that dreadful day in January all those years ago. On that same day, a small band of British soldiers left behind to guard an isolated mission station called Rorke’s Drift on the bank of that river and facing certain death from the Zulu force that had killed their comrades at Isandlwana, did the impossible. The fought through the night behind a barricade of mealie bags and biscuit boxes and many survived to be awarded 11 VC’s, more than would ever be awarded again in a single action in military history including both World Wars. And who should be killed by the Zulus while out on a patrol in Zululand in the same campaign a

little later that year but the last of the Napoleonic Dynasty, Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte – the Prince Imperial of France. Exactly what he was doing here is a story for another time, but it happened. The landscape has little change where these things took place. The dead soldiers are still there and there is a tangible atmosphere that never fails to move those who care to visit. It was close to these places that Sue and I built our Guest House and where we lived and worked alongside my lifelong friend, the great Zulu War authority, David Rattray, before being enticed to come to Ballito to build a tourism experience that sadly never happened. When that venture failed to gain traction, we went back to our media roots and created the Life & Style media brand which has grown steadily over the years and continues to keep us busy. But at this time of year I think of them, and my dear friend, David Rattray the best storyteller I ever knew, who fell to a bullet there as so many before him. He gave us so much to be grateful for. They continue to fill my field of dreams...

And they shall grow not old as we that are left grow old And age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn And, at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them For the Fallen - Laurence Binyon

We have an interesting relationship with bees on the North Coast. For ages the green monoculture of sugar cane that was all pervasive here before urbanisation began in earnest, created a fairly hostile environment for them. Bees don’t do well if they don’t have bio diversity around them so bee keeping was not an option here.

B

UT with development, strangely, for the bees, it all changed for the better. Many estates planted beefriendly landscapes to replace the sugar cane and it wasn’t long before the bees were back in business.

Bee Hive

While most people enjoy the honey that bees produce and the health supporting properties of organic honey are well documented, there is a general awareness that swarms of bees can kill. They do so fairly regularly in Africa. The African Bee is known globally as the killer bee and is much more aggressive that its placid European and American equivalents. It is also much more productive which makes bee keeping in this part of the world rather fun. When a queen bee decides to spread her wings in search of a new adventure, she sets off accompanied by a myriad of loyal supporters. These are the swarms that occasionally make their way into

places where they are not really welcome – like your ceiling… While they are on the move, these swarms are generally docile and not to be feared. But when they set up shop in your home or garden, they can become a problem. Trevor Thompson is a local bee keeper who also offers a humane bee removal service. He loves bees and builds his own hives to create the perfect conditions for them to thrive. He is also a wonderful resource for excellent organic honey on the North Coast. If you have a bee problem or are thinking of setting up a little apiary business here, you should definitely contact Trevor. He’s a great guy and happy to share his passion for bees. FLAVOUR OF 2020?

HAS TO BE CLASSIC BLUEBERRY, SAYS FIRMENICH The world’s biggest flavour company, Firmenich, has hailed “Classic Blueberry” as its flavour of the year for 2020 – citing the fruit’s longstanding association with wellbeing and its role in ushering a new wave of F&B options for global consumers.

T

HIS marks the eighth consecutive year that the Swiss flavour house has cast its vote for the hottest flavour of the forthcoming year.

“What’s classic is new again,” says Emmanuel Butstraen, president of Firmenich. “With blueberry, we

celebrate a flavour that is timeless and enduring, but also increasingly relevant.” The announcement from Firmenich comes as the color blue is in

the spotlight. Recently, Pantone listed Classic Blue as its colour of the year for 2020 in line with a rising industry trend for vibrant blue hues and cerulean tints in F&B applications. Meanwhile, GNT Group highlighted that “Shades of Aqua” will be a key colour trend for 2020. Vivid blue and green hues in food are set to drive innovation as consumers seek products that “reconnect them with nature,” the company noted. According to Butstraen, blueberry has been a “beloved flavour for centuries in many markets and today, is being rediscovered and growing to be one of the most relevant flavours in many categories,” he explains. “Blueberry is a fantastic flavour to work with because it is robust and multi-faceted,” Jeffrey Schmoyer, VP Global Sensory & Consumer Insights at Firmenich, told Life & Style.

“It is renowned for its standout floral notes and distinct tanginess, while also bringing fresh green and sweet elements to the overall profile. It even includes subtle hints of citrus, vanilla and spice notes giving it a complexity that will accentuate and pair with many flavours,” he continued. “Beyond the classic pairings with other berries, there are many less obvious matches, such as black tea or habanero that can be explored.” While blueberries are no doubt highly photogenic and shareable, for us, it is much deeper than that, Schmoyer noted. “Blue is a very rare colour in the plant world. When nature creates this colour and does so in such a way, it signals something special is inside.

BLOATING 101

from the CAUSES C AUSES to the SOLUTIONS S OLUTIONS

That over-stuffed feeling is awful at any time, let alone when you haven’t even eaten a big enough meal for it to be justified! Bloating is the sensation we experience when our stomach is filled with air or gas. It can be horribly uncomfortable. To understand how we can get rid of bloating, Dietitian Kim Wilson helps us understand why it happens. WHAT CAUSES BLOATING? Bloating occurs when our gastrointestinal tract becomes filled with air or gas. This may be due to ingested air, or through the production of gas internally by our gut bacteria. Bloating may be triggered by the food you eat, especially if you have food intolerances (for example a lactose intolerance). Some other simple reasons for bloating may include: •Overeating • Reflux • Weight Gain • Menstruation (in some women) • Constipation • Swallowing air (such as when you chew gum, smoke or simply eat too fast)

MORE SERIOUS CAUSES OF BLOATING MAY INCLUDE: • Infection • Inflammation of the gut lining • Irritable bowel syndrome • Liver disease • Crohn’s disease • Blockage in your bowel or bladder • Cancer • Some medicines

SAY GOODBYE TO BLOATING

A little bloating now and again is pretty common. If bloating is persistent and frequent then it is recommended that you consult your healthcare practitioner. When you want to avoid the discomfort of bloating entirely the best approach is to first identify your personal triggers. Then ideally avoid these triggers where possible. For those days when you just know you’re going to bloat, keep your natural treatments within reach.

It’s important to know that temporary bloating usually isn’t a cause for concern. However, if it occurs frequently it may be worth exploring with your dietitian or health care practitioner.

HOW TO PREVENT BLOATING There are a number of ways to avoid getting bloated. You want to address both the presence of excess air, and the production of excess gas to make sure you tackle the problem from both sides.

FIRSTLY, TO AVOID INGESTING EXCESS AIR:

•Avoid chewing gum • Avoid using straws for drinking (bonus – benefit the environment!) • Avoid drinking fizzy drinks •Slow down your meal times, and chew your food properly (15 – 20 times each mouthful) • Quit smoking

TO PREVENT EXCESS PRODUCTION OF GAS IN THE STOMACH:

► Avoid or reduce foods that are common culprits: cabbage, brussels sprouts, beans, lentils, sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower ►Avoid eating and drinking foods that contain fructose or artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol or maltitol (these are often found in sugar-free foods)/ ►If your bloating is due to constipation, eat more foods that contain fiber. Some easy examples include oats, chia seeds or psyllium husks. -Avoid dairy products if you notice that these are triggering for you.

to encourage more efficient and thorough digestion, so you can feel better about the foods you eat and worry less about having the foods you enjoy.

HOW TO TREAT BLOATING Some days you can almost guarantee that you’re going to be bloated by sunset. Christmas is a great example simply because you’re more likely to overindulge. Luckily there are a few remedies you can keep on hand to treat your bloating. ► Charcoal capsules: these work by absorbing excess gas so they’re great for quick relief. ► Probiotics: bloating can be caused by an imbalance in your gut bacteria, so putting the good bugs back in may give you relief. These will also help if your bloating is constipation-related. ► Herbal relief: herbal ingredients such as peppermint, chamomile, anise, caraway, coriander, fennel and turmeric have all been known to relieve bloating. Sipping some peppermint or fennel tea after a big meal is a delicious way to relieve your discomfort.

Dr Rosie Carey

J

UST the nomenclature of maternal mental health gives an indication of how confusing the subject is: initially it was called post-natal depression, then post-partum depression and more recently it’s been named peri-natal distress. The most recent name, peri-natal distress, is the most accurate because it encompasses more than what is traditionally recognized as post-natal depression. People tend to think traditionally of post-natal depression as only being evident after (post) the birth of the baby and /or solely consisting of symptoms of tearfulness, low mood and anhedonia. In fact, more and more we are realizing that the symptoms can begin as soon as the pregnancy begins and can last up to two years after delivery, and that symptoms can consist of more than

just typical depressive symptoms, with a range of symptoms from severe anxiety, aggression and agitation all the way through to the more recognized depressive symptoms.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: How do you know if you or someone you love has peri-natal distress? There are some telltale signs to look out for: • Lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the outside world • Lack of energy and feeling tired all the time, low mood • Trouble sleeping at night and feeling exhausted during the day • Difficulty bonding with the baby • withdrawing from contact with other people • problems concentrating and making decisions • Frightening thoughts – for example, about hurting the baby or harming

yourself • Thoughts about suicide • Anxiety that interferes with your ability to function and that is disproportionate to the triggers • Aggression • Persistent tearfulness • Hallucinations When you are suffering from peri-natal distress it can be difficult for you to pick up these signs in yourself which is why it is so important that those around you (spouse, family and friends) are aware of the warning signs. WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR PERINATAL DISTRESS? Peri-natal distress does not usually have one single cause, but is usually the result of the interplay of a number of factors. Some common risk factors for peri-natal distress are: • A history of mental health problems,

particularly depression, earlier in life • A history of mental health problems during pregnancy • Having no close family or friends to support you • Having a poor relationship with your partner • Having an unwanted child • Stressful socio-economic circumstances • Having HIV or other chronic illnesses • Being in an abusive relationship • Drug or substance abuse Poor maternal mental health doesn’t only have an impact on the mother, but also on the child. Peri-natal distress can lead to impaired cognitive and emotional development of the infant and can have ramifications for the whole family. The good news is that, if caught early, it can be treated effectively in most cases: happy mom, happy baby and happy family.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY – The cutting edge in Physio care Andrew Leipus

W

The medical, health, wellness and even the aesthetics industries are constantly coming up with new ways to keep us alive and looking better for longer. Physiotherapy is no different and we approach injuries, pain and movement dysfunction differently today than we did even one year ago.

HEN injury occurs we all want the quickest ‘fix’ to get our lives back to normal. One technology rapidly

082 484 3839 admin@movephysio.co.za The Circle, Douglas Crowe Drive, Ballito www.movephysio.co.za

becoming mainstream is Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT). It has been used in medicine for some time, but has only recently become more affordable to be offered in a private clinic setting where it is used to treat a range of orthopaedic and sports injuries and help people recover more quickly.

Without getting too technical, ESWT is acoustically generated pressure waves, much like the sonic boom experienced when a plane breaks the sound barrier. Applied locally across the skin, these waves penetrate and exert their effects into the body tissues up to 5cm in depth. This should not be confused with ‘focused’ Shockwave, which uses much higher energy, and can be used to penetrate further into the body to treat conditions such as kidney stones. Physiotherapists use ‘radial’ ESWT, which has a

broader and lower energy distribution, the effects for the patient being healing and pain relief. There are many conditions which ESWT can treat but it is particularly effective in managing soft tissue pathology. Conditions that respond very well includes trigger points (myofascial pain), tennis elbow, achilles tendinopathy, hamstring tendinopathy, rotator cuff injury, patellar tendinopathy, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, calcification and even scar tissue management. The energy generated promotes a biological response in the tissues effecting regeneration and reparative processes. It works well for both sub-acute and chronic problems. The same technology is also used in the beauty industry for reducing the appearance of cellulite. It is generally accepted that between 3-6 sessions are required to obtain the best outcomes, however better results can be seen when used as an adjunct within a rehabilitation program. Most

injuries are associated with a loss of strength or mobility, and require an active component in order to restore full function. The pain relieving effect of a treatment can break that viscious cycle of pain and inhibition, allowing the injured area to be exercised at a much more comfortable level. The result is that movement and strength return sooner than when ESWT is not used. There are very few side effects reported from ESWT. It can often be uncomfortable during the treatment, moreso when focussed over bony areas (often where tendons attach). But since it is non-invasive, non-surgical, presents no injection soreness, no infection risk and no chance of latent tissue damage/ weakening when compared with ‘quick fix’ cortisone injections for example, it is overall a really good and safe treatment option. Not all Physios offer this technology as yet so call to check first!

HOLIDAY SEASON ACTION 2019 Kwadukuza beach manager ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honeysett is back in the righting seat after yet another cracking good holiday season in our town and on our beaches.

I

T’S good to be back in the righting seat after yet another cracking good holiday season in our town and on our beaches.

For us lifeguards it started with the Matric Rage 2019 in mid-November. We employed additional lifeguards to allow us to open beaches from 06h00 in the morning until 18h00 each evening to cover the day’s activities. Apart from the few party goers on the beaches to watch the sun rise, things

this year were quiet and pretty much eventless. Times have definitely changed. With the Rage so well run now, there were no problems involving rescues, but still we did run into a few alcohol related issues where lifeguards had to stop Ragers from swimming under the influence. I would say that due to our economic times, people are no longer taking long holidays and things only hotted up for

us from around the 24th until the 05th of January. Our concerns are, of course, the number of drownings that take place during the summer months where people are swimming wherever there is water and it often results in tragedy. This year summer is not officially over but, so far, numbers have been down on previous years. During the busy period, we estimated an average of 20 000 people on or around our beaches daily and with a staff complement of around just 70 Lifeguards, it can get hectic at times.

unpleasant for many. Lost children were another issue with the municipality manning stations where wrist bracelets were handed out to children on arrival with parent’s contact details written on them. This worked well when a child was brought in. Lifeguards and emergency services coped well handling hundreds of rescues, first aid cases, near drownings and medical emergencies from stabbings to broken bones. Of the four drownings that did occur, none took place on any of our main swimming beaches which shows the dedication and commitment

Public holidays always put us under pressure with visitors flocking in to enjoy themselves for a day on the beach, but sadly, the lack of respect regarding the consumption of liquor in public places, causes untold trouble. The authorities battled to control the influx and, as a result, a number of violent issues ensued resulting in negative publicity. Fighting was a common incident and noise issues also made things

of our lifeguards. On some days they stayed at their posts well after their knock off times to ensure our beaches were safe. When those drownings occurred, emergency services did not leave the scene until the bodies were recovered, sometimes going back for five days all day searching down rivers that were dirty and could well have had snakes and crocodiles lurking in them as they felt their way around.

KING SHAKA

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

T

HE number of passengers arriving and departing during December last year through King Shaka International Airport near Ballito grew more than 11% compared to the same period in 2018, making it the fastestgrowing airport in South Africa.

The airport facilitated the journeys of more than 616 000 passengers arriving and departing during December last year, up from 553 000 for the same period the previous year. “Most airlines operated at near to full capacity during the peak holiday month as both international and local visitors flocked to Durban for the end-of-year break,” says Colin Naidoo, KSIA Senior

Manager: Corporate Affairs. “The growth in passenger numbers reflects not only the increasing attractiveness of Kwa-Zulu Natal as a tourist destination, but that flying directly to their destination has become more affordable and convenient for more visitors. We are proud to say that December 2019 yielded the highest passenger volumes for the first time in its history, of which 93% of total pax were domestic travellers.” Naidoo said the growth in international traffic was the result of several international airlines operating direct routes to Durban from major cities such as London and Dubai. It also indicates that the domestic airlines were at capacity to ensure passengers

The stats go to show that under all the pressure we faced, it was a job well done and hats off to all services Lifeguards, Fire and Rescue, Police and Law enforcement, IPSS Medical Rescue and the NSRI for a job well done. ► DROWNINGS: 4 (2 X BEACH AND 2 X RIVER) ► RESCUES: 247 ► FIRST AID: 622 CASES ► MED RESCUES: 17 (STABBINGS, BROKEN BONES AND OTHER MAJOR INJURIES)

A special thanks to Santorini and those who sponsored the food and drink for the End of Season Braai and to all those businesses who put time in to upgrade some beach facilities to create a really pleasant holiday experience. had more choices to local destinations including Durban. With Durban being an events destination with sport, conference and music added to the destination of choice for people traveling to Durban and KZN. The number of international visitors arriving and departing through KSIA grew to more than 43 000 during December 2019, up more than 11% on the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, there was a 12% increase to more than 570 000 in December 2019 (2018: 511 000) in domestic passengers. “There is increasing competition among international airlines for direct routes and we are doing our best to attract new

airlines and to benefit from this,” says Naidoo. The airport has won several accolades and awards over the past year, including the best regional airport in Africa in the Skytrax World Airport Awards in 2019, CAA Safety Award 2019 and Skytax Best Airport Staff 2019! The airport hopes that this trend will continue as 2020 rapidly approaches with its challenges and opportunities. The increasing passenger numbers during the busy peak season month puts King Shaka International Airport firmly on track to grow its total passenger numbers to more than 6 million a year by the end of March this year.

HIGHLY ALLERGENIC WEED DETECTED IN KZN FOR THE FIRST TIME

T

HE discovery was made by Dr Dilys Berman, an aerobiologist at UCT and Prof Jonny Peter, who heads up the UCT Lung Institute’s Allergy Unit. Palynologist, Dr Frank Neumann, based at Wits University whose research focuses on the impact that climate change has on vegetation, also confirmed that the pollen grains indeed belong to the invasive Ambrosia species.

Prof Peter says while the threat of allergic plants, such as ragweed migrating southward, because of climate change, has always been a concern, little did they know it was going to show up so soon. “Ragweed is incredibly invasive, and its potent pollen has been problematic in the US for many decades. In recent years, allergy sufferers in Europe and South America have also come under threat as ragweed started to invade these areas. “For now, KwaZulu-Natal residents are most at risk as ragweed pollen has recently been detected at the Durban monitoring site over the last few days. The counts are relatively low at this stage, but we are monitoringthem daily to detect any sudden spikes. A

small population of ragweed has also been found on the banks of the Vaal River near Heidelberg – about 50km away from Johannesburg, while the Eastern and Western Cape still remain ragweed-free. “Based on historical data, ragweed thrives in hot, dry environments and produces more pollen when CO2 levels are high,” he says. UCT aerobiologist, Dilys Berman warns that ragweed poses a serious implication for human health. “It’s been one of the most loathed weeds in the US, causing misery for 23 million Americans and it’s estimated that ragweed allergy rates in Europe will increase from 33 to 77 million in the next two decades. While we haven’t reported sensitisation in SA yet, it is a cause for concern. “Increasing amounts of fine-powder ragweed in SA could exacerbate hay fever symptoms and asthma for the estimated 17 million South Africans who suffer from allergies. “Given that its highly allergenic, people who normally don’t suffer from pollen allergies, may develop a sensitivity to it in the future as the weed proliferates.”
