The Friday SHOWDOWN
Distribution Supervisor Skhumbuzo Manyoni
I
HAD an interesting morning at the CCMA on Friday. The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) is a dispute resolution body established in terms of the Labour Relations Act, 66 of 1995. Their manifesto states that it is an independent body that does not belong to and is not controlled by any political party, trade union or business. It is, however, the first port of call for any disgruntled employee who believes they have been short changed in the work place.
I think that the idea behind the establishment of this body is to eliminate the exploitation of workers by unscrupulous employers. It’s a noble quest and one that I fully support. But, like most systems of this nature, it tends to serve as a handicap to economic growth because the labour environment is a relative minefield and many feel that it is heavily biased towards the rights of workers over the principles of good corporate governance. Be that as it may, I have, on occasion found myself in these hallowed halls, at the behest of the occasional disgruntled former staff member, and I have generally come away from these sessions satisfied that the system does work. Such was the case on Friday. I won’t go into detail for obvious reasons, but I will say that apart from the inconvenience of having to forgo a productive work day and schlep into central Durban, which in itself is a quick intro to tactical urban survival, I actually found the experience rather interesting. The commissioner was professional and efficient and allowed both parties to state their positions without interruption. She then asked questions for the purpose of clarity and to establish the basis for the
Advertising/Sales Melanie Parnell
claim. She then allowed the debate to continue, at one time, excusing herself from the room to allow us a certain amount of freedom to vent. These things can get a little heated. After all, being accused of harsh or unfair treatment is a bitter pill to swallow when the entire ethos of your enterprise is premised on principles of fairness and, dare I say, kindness. Kindness is an old fashioned concept, but one that I believe in. A labour consultant recently told me never to be kind in the workplace for fear that it would have negative consequences in labour law terms. Fairness, yes, but not kindness. Don’t give time off without strict documentation, don’t overlook missed targets, deadlines or poor performance. Apply the rules meticulously, no matter what. A sick child is no excuse for late arrival or a change of routine. Medical issues must be clearly documented and limited to the terms set down in the labour act. Unauthorised use of company resources like the internet or printers for personal use must be firmly dealt with. Never advance money or commission or give gratuities that may be seen as a right or create expectation…the list is endless. While I understand where this comes from, I believe that there is room for kindness in the workplace and it creates a much more productive environment.

Of course, there are always those who mistake kindness for weakness and try to take advantage of it. On Friday the words of our labour consultant echoed loudly as I looked across the desk and listened to the litany of woes being presented as substance for a hefty claim. I was not impressed. Neither, apparently, was the commissioner who swiftly brokered a deal that settled the matter to our satisfaction. Was it a waste of time? Not entirely. I came away rather buoyed at the way the matter had been handled and it gave me a sense of hope for the future. And that is a feeling that I would gladly travel to Durban for again – but hopefully not any time soon!

ESPITE economic uncertainty and many property pundits explaining how some regions in South Africa are flat and that there is an element of buyer hesitance, Harcourts Real Estate has managed to defy these trends and continues to show positive growth across the national market. As a valuesbased business, we are committed to client experience and a moral guideline that showcases how we do business. We feel that this combined with our approach to technology, training and innovation has contributed to our extraordinary success rate.
We know that companies don't succeed, people do. As an organisation, we understand that our success is all about people - our team and our clients. We must never lose sight of the 'people' at the centre of everything. There is never a right time to do the wrong thing. We all know instinctively what the right thing to do is, and so our focus is always to make the right decision, and to always do the right thing. "With these sentiments at the core of how we approach real estate, JP Pienaar, a distinguished real estate specialist and dedicated family man has presented a new Harcourts office to the Dolphin Coast market, as business owner of the new Harcourts Dolphin Coast. JP is a powerful force in Harcourts and has steered the Grahamstown office for many years to great success earning the respect of his staff and community as a man dedicated to honest service. That is why we are so excited about his involvement in this community, “said Richard Gray, Harcourts South Africa CEO. I am excited about the possibilities and trends on the Dolphin Coast. By using Harcourts technology we can take real estate to the next level, for example we are able to specify buyer target demographics and assist sellers to identify the channels and platforms for their home to get the highest ROI. The ever-evolving market along the North Coast of Kwazulu_Natal requires leadership and agents that are able to identify modern trends as well as understand and inform clients on the current state of the market. It is exciting to see how the market across this region presents buyers with a wide range of property options. From first-time buyer investment properties to beautiful family homes and exquisite luxury properties. It is imperative we are able to broadly market properties in this region as there remains a lot of interest from not only inland regions but international too. With the unparalleled views, quaint suburban roads and beaches that are a glorious sight to behold. My team and I are humbled by our inclusion in this market and are proud to service this community.

people getting together, working creatively, inspiring each other, engaging with new technology, and building a “bottom-up economy”.

Chris Anderson defined the Maker Movement as “the new industrial revolution”, later Klaus Schwab of the WEF popularised the term “The Fourth Industrial Revolution” now commonly known as 4IR. The Revolution is changing the way we work and live. Ultimately 4IR will mean anyone can make anything anywhere. Everyday more people are joining the revolution as they realise the creative potential within themselves and the possibilities new technologies unlock. Makers make things, using both cutting edge technology and age old methods, or often a combination of both. Makers find value in making

something by hand, giving a physical product more value because of the thoughtful, careful and useful way it is designed and made. Makers are not aiming for mass market for their product, they are simply expressing something they love, and in the process creating something worthwhile for the niche that they represent. Makers openly share resources, expertise, equipment and encouragement because they choose to believe that we can do more together than we can apart. The Maker Space exists to share knowledge and equipment that enables anyone to make anything. We exist as a hybrid organisation through The Maker Space Foundation is a Non-Profit company which hosts our community and social development programs, and our associated commercial entities that offer eventing, corporate training and advisory services and production services. Our headquarters are in Durban, South Africa located at 51 Station Drive. We have Lasercutters, 3D printers, and Small CNC’s. Visitors are welcome on Thursdays from 1pm too 8pm. Our goal is to launch and support 200 maker spaces in Southern Africa, creating a safe place where people can come and learn, be inspired, unlock creativity and potential, free themselves from corporate slavery and a life of mundane work that they hate. We recently benefitted from the
Google.org Global Innovation Challenge 2018 winning $125,000 to enable skills and enterprise development.
PLEASE HELP US BY: •Creating awareness – talking about it, sharing on social media, making something. •Participate – do more than talking about it, engage and become part of the revolution. Give advice, feedback, ideas, enthusiasm, and MAKE something. •Share – we are intrigued by the idea of an open source economy, by sharing we hope to reduce the barriers that have held back the development of ideas for too long. •Give – your time, expertise and money are all assets that can be invested to accomplish the dream of a better way. Find out how you can get involved. www.themakerspace.co.za

From JUNK to TREASURE
R
EDWOOD STUDIOS began its journey from hobby to business 4 years ago. We are a furniture Restoration and Paint technique studio based in Salt Rock, specializing in reviving and re-loving old and outdated furniture.
Many moons ago, I used to manage a gorgeous décor store in the Lifestyle Centre called Origins. We started stocking an amazing product called Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. As a retail outlet for this product we were required to hold workshops to demonstrate the various applications of this paint. I started facilitating these workshops and found that I had a natural knack for working creatively with both people and paint. I started doing up pieces of my furniture at home to gain a better understanding of the various techniques, and soon found myself addicted to seeing the transformation of furniture once put under the brush, so to speak. I started painting for family and friends, and buying in small pieces of second hand furniture to work on and
sell. Word spread, and I began taking on projects for a few clients in my spare time. I started to see big potential for this service, and took the giant leap of faith to leave my retail position and pursue my home business. My years in the retail sector were invaluable and really helped me understand the importance of good service, and dealing with so many clients on a daily bases illustrated that each person is clearly so unique and requires a special approach and touch. This lesson has stayed with me, and I truly believe in providing the best service possible. Constantly being inside people’s homes is a very personal thing, and care must be taken to ensure that each individual’s style and requirements are respected. I really enjoy this aspect of my business, and have formed a close relationship with many of my clients.
SARAH JACKSON
“Reduce, reuse, recycle” has always been a valuable phrase and part of my personal life. So I am glad that this runs through into my business life as well. In these rather challenging economic times it doesn’t always seem viable to refresh your living space by buying new. I love the fact that we can provide a service that turns furniture from drab-to-fab at a fraction of the cost. Another wonderful aspect to what we offer is that often times my clients furniture is extremely sentimental yet very outdated or tired. Instead of saying goodbye to those dear old pieces of furniture that have been in the family for years, we give them new life and get them shining again. It has been an interesting, challenging and very rewarding process of turning “Hobby” into “Business” and we now service private
homes and holiday apartments in many of the estates and complexes on the Dolphin Coast. Up to this point I have relied on word of mouth advertising and referrals, also working closely with some wonderful local decorating businesses. The quality of our work and service has been our biggest asset and continue to hold us in good stead. I have 2 staff members that work with me daily and it has given me huge satisfaction to see how their skills and lives have improved by being a part of the Redwood Studio team.

More Development on the Cards at LIFESTYLE CENTRE
I
N 2017, when faced with what seemed like an insurmountable obstacle in the form of an 80 000m2 regional mall opening over the road, the executive team at Lifestyle Centre took the decision to differentiate and create unique and special spaces in order to retain its position as the heartbeat of Ballito.
Fast forward 3 years and it’s fair to say that they have achieved that, primarily through the highly successful mix of offerings in The Market and the beautifully designed Eat Street with its selection of great restaurants. The intersection of beautifully designed spaces, unique offerings and live music with the traditional anchor tenants of SUPERSPAR, TOPS, WOOLWORTHS FOOD, DISCHEM and MICA in a convenient, easily accessible location, has resulted in success in the face of what may have appeared to be insurmountable odds. But there is more to come!
An area that has not yet been redeveloped is the line of stores opposite Weylandts, at the Dis-Chem end of the centre. 2020, however, is the year in which that takes place. Aptly named The Studios, this area has been designed to incorporate an eclectic mix of boutique stores and personalised spaces to deliver an interesting and intimate shopping experience. According to Bruce Rencken, coowner of Lifestyle Centre, “One of our key strategies is that retail has to be experiential. We want Lifestyle Centre to be the place where locals meet and connect, where everyone feels comfortable and enjoys a unique shopping experience. The aim is to provide another area within the centre for the discerning customer in which to browse for exceptional products that are presented in a beautifully designed space with incredible attention to detail. Plenty of glass, steel and natural materials will provide a stunning
backdrop to showcase a variety of interesting retail offerings. This will be a space in which you spoil, indulge, pamper, treat and appreciate yourself.” A key part of the thinking behind The Studios is the mixed-use mezzanine level which features two health and fitness studios in a unique, modern and spacious environment. “We are wanting the energy of the mezzanine to be transferred into the retail space below, so that shoppers can enjoy the vibe and vitality that is generated from the studios,” says Rencken. As is the case with The Market and Eat Street, The Studios will provide another platform for small, individual businesses and local operators to showcase their offerings in a handsomely constructed and interactive setting which will continue to add to the personality of Lifestyle Centre. “The reality for retail in Ballito is that there is a significant oversupply of retail space in the Ballito area and there
is no question that business is tough for everyone, so we have to continue to differentiate and develop new nodes within the centre responsibly. We are confident that this special new space will become another meeting point for Ballito and a great new addition to living life the Ballito way!” says Rencken. With plans approved and designs finalized, construction is due to start in March and the space is in the process of being tenanted. The aim is for The Studios to open early in the third quarter of 2020.
A video which reflects a realistic flythrough of what to expect at The Studios is viewable on YouTube: https://youtu.be/KHV2uRQD7GY
Choosing colours... When we try and combine colours we always find it hard to do, but we will show you how easy it can be:
• A complementary complementary / contrasting combination: Complementary colours are on the opposite side of each other on the colour wheel. They create a vivid yet energizing effect, especially when used at maximum saturation. • A split complementary / contrasting combination: This is colours used from opposite each other on the colour wheel while using different saturation of each colour. Creating a calmer combination.
Want to try some colour combinations, not to worry visit your local Jack’s Paint and Hardware store.
• A triad combination: A triad combination is a combination of three colours from the colour wheel in the form of a triangle, when placed next to each other they produce a high contrasting effect but still preserve harmony. This combination will seem vibrant even when using pale unsaturated colours.
• An Analogous combination: This is when we use two or three colours from the same side of the colour wheel. Creating a calming yet likeable impression. This could be light or dark colours of the same saturation.

THIS WEEK WE LOVE DERMAHEAL
C
AN anything actually turn back the hands of time? No, not really. That kind of “science” still belongs fairly firmly in the realm of fiction and Hollywood movies. But what is possible is to understand the changes that happen in the body over time and the physiological processes that lead to what we see as signs of ageing. From here, you can create specific strategies to defy the effects of time, like the finely tuned active ingredients in Dermaheal that boost certain compounds and functions of the skin back to levels of youth.
In a nutshell, Lamelle Research Laboratories’ Dermaheal works by taking what youthful skin does well (heal, regulate and regenerate itself) and reintroducing those abilities to ageing skin. It’s quite literally empowering your skin to defy the effects of time. Dermaheal : • Reintroduces proteins your body hasn’t seen since birth • Re-establishes communication between your cells (like in youth) • Reactivates your skin’s collagen production • Re-energises skin cells all the way to the end of their life cycles • Rebalances the years-long, damaging chronic inflammation • Returns skin cell turnover to normal (youthful) levels • Restores your skin’s ability to hydrate itself
Ultra Renewal Cream takes this one step further by also introducing advanced HAFi fragments, a special way of packaging hyaluronic acid (HA) that boosts hydration through all layers of your skin and stimulates your body’s own HA production. So, you can’t reverse time or age. But, employing solid strategies with proven results, like Lamelle Dermaheal, you can give back your body and skin some of the most important abilities it had in youth.

SNAKES ALIVE IN SURF CITY
I
T’S summer and across the province, snakes are out and about looking for prey before their winter hibernation. That means plenty of action for Simon Keys, Siouxsie Gillett and fellow snake catchers Neville Wolmarans, Jason Arnold, Byron Zimmerman and Nick Evans. This team of Durban reptile heroes will feature in the hugely popular reality television series “Snake City as seen on National Geographic WILD”.
Filmed in and around Durban, “Snake City” has already notched up six seasons and has been flighted in 117 countries. The impact on human attitudes towards snakes has been profound. The series has resulted in more and more people phoning for a snake catcher, instead of simply killing the snake. While the show delivers the adrenaline-fuelled ride that makes for good television, it’s underlying purpose is to save the snakes that have so few human friends. With over 2500 successful catches between them, Simon and Siouxsie are passionate about the planet’s creatures and simply love what they do. “We love helping snakes out, often saving them from certain death, but we also love working with the team to educate people through the captures,” says Simon. “Snakes play such an important role in the ecosystem, and people tend to forget that they do a great service to us by keeping rodent populations down. Creatures have a right to be on the planet, and we see our role as helping to educate people about this through the series. The more we as humans understand, the less afraid we become of something.” “It seems that the series is really making a difference in people’s attitudes about snakes,” enthuses Siouxsie. “By showcasing the difference in snakes, we have been able to make people see that many harmless snakes do exist and there is no need to fear them.”
Back in Surf City to film Snake City, the team is available to attend to calls from people in the greater Durban area, who have a snake that needs to be saved, removed and relocated. There is no charge for a call out, and the caller may even be lucky enough to end up on TV. The contact number, which has changed from previous seasons, is now 063 234 6932.
SNAKES IN THE CITY VISITS 88FM Snakes in the City has become a popular television series and the sixth edition is currently running globally. It was fun to have the human cast in the studio recently – luckily there were no snakes on the loose to interrupt the conversation with Mike and Simon and Siouxsie on the Morning Drive.

BALLITO’S LATEST ATTRACTION YET ?
HORIZON COCKTAIL BAR & LOUNGE
is the hottest place to be in Ballito. Relaxed sea facing views with delectable street food inspired dishes and the tastiest cocktails. Their menu includes burgers, pizzas, pastas, prawns, tacos and sensational desserts. Is this the beginning of a migration towards the old heart of Ballito?
We definitely think it is! Our town has so much to offer but recent years have seen the “old town” district, suffering from a steady decline. But there’s change in the air and with gentrification projects like this led by young enthusiastic entrepreneurs like Matt Bower, owner of Horizon Cocktail Bar and Crush nightclub below it which has also been made over, things are definitely looking brighter in the Ballito Village. We can highly recommend a visit to Horizon and our go to suggestion would be a Sweetie Bird Burger paired with an ice cold Corona!

I remember my parents loved to mix lemonade with beer for homemade shandies on hot days, which is probably where flavoured beer originated, but I always found beers like Flying Fish too sweet after the first one. I initially thought the mango beer Bridal, Evening was going &to have the same aftertaste, but Cocktail as it turns out, it’s not as sweet and Wear I found it a refreshing break from the HANNO SC traditional bitterness.
