T’S that time of year again. Holiday makers are arriving in droves and the roads are suddenly much busier, making a quick trip to the shops much more of an effort.

Advertising/Sales Delia Laas

This morning, after my pre-breakfast ramble with the dogs, as I relaxed with a cup of coffee on the deck, I was struck with a profound sense of gratitude to the mysterious forces of the universe that conspired to bring us here. I am not entirely sure that I deserve it but I accept it and give thanks daily for the vista stretching off below and beyond me down to the sea. A melange of so many shades of green counterpointed with pastel pinks and yellows of Frangipani and Hibiscus, lead blue Plumbago, purple and white Brunfelsia, sulphur yellow Canary Creeper and intense orange of the African Flame Tree – this is my view of the world from our reverie in Ballito. This morning a pair of purple crested Turacos tumbled raucously from the giant African mahogany to my left and swooped away on dazzling scarlet wings to settle in a blossoming Albezia fifty metres away. Beyond them, the intense blue of the sea stretching off to merge seamlessly with the horizon, creating a peculiar optical illusion of ships floating in the air. This is our home and on days like this I believe it’s close to a little bit of heaven on earth. I entirely To stay in touch with understand why those who live in what’s happening in other parts of the country make their way down here to relax for a few the area and to enjoy precious days away from the harsh a continuous celebration reality of life at the cutting edge of of the music you love, the grind. tune in to 88FM, For the next few weeks Ballito will experience an influx of tourists Radio Life & Style bringing with them the revenue to or stream us online boost our local economy. This Week We Tried Woof Woof Walk Ballito

M

OST dog owners understand that due to pressure of work and life in general, it sometimes just isn’t possible to give your best friend/s the regular outings they need to keep them healthy and happy. Bored dogs, particularly young dogs, become destructive, digging up your precious plants and chewing those expensive pieces of furniture…

Luckily in Ballito there is a solution to this dilemma in the form of Woof Woof Walk, an innovative company founded by Pawfect co-owner, Sarah Swainson and her protégé, Nkosinathi Mathe. This is a very professional approach to dog walking, starting with an in depth evaluation and question session followed by a complementary 15 min walk. Your dog will love it – and so will your garden and furniture! Visit woofwoofwalkballito on Facebook for more info

Darlington escaped the violence and has continued to ply his trade on the streets of Ballito. He has moved away from the bead and wire work that is possibly a little overtraded, and has created a line that draws on his woodcarving skills in a rather unusual way. He now creates lamps from

short lengths of PVC pipe that are intricately carved to allow light to shine or rather glow through images of animals, trees and other designs from his fertile imagination. We think he is onto something – you may want to acquire one of his works, and you would be helping to support a struggling artist in the process. That is a good thing in this world of hard reality. THE

LIFESTYLE CENTRE

IS FEELING FESTIVE

L

IFESTYLE CENTRE is feeling festive and is gearing up for the December and January summer holidays.

The centre’s trading hours will be extended to 8am – 8pm for the period 12 December – 4 January, with a few exceptions being 8am – 6pm on 24 December and 31 December and optional trading for tenants on 25 December and 1 January. Anchor tenant Lifestyle SUPERSPAR will be opening 7am – 9pm daily for the period 13 – 30 December, including all public holidays, aside from Christmas Day, when normal trading hours of 7am – 8pm will apply.

The Market will also operate longer hours, as follows: The Market Festive Season Trading Hours

I

T had been three years since my last trip and visit into Mozambique and with the yearend fast approaching well we thought why not squeeze in one last trip for 2019.

There has been much talk of the new freeway from Maputo to the Kosi Bay Border and so we set off for Ponta Do Oura to see for ourselves what impact the new road has had on this once quiet coastal town. Until recently you could only access the town by sand roads which required some skilled driving and supplies were only available when a truck managed to get through but this was all part of the charm of the place. So, what’s changed. The border was the first change we noticed. Both sides have at last upgraded their customs and immigration offices with properly managed entry and exit queues for visitors. This has sped up the border transfers which is a welcome change especially in peak season times when the line of cars stretched for kilometres on both sides. Then there is the welcome site of the new tar road which winds its way away from the old sand road route down to Ponto and out towards the air strip. How did they manage to build this tar road on sand? New roads are always impressive and within 15min we were in Ponta town itself where the lovely tar road ends just after the market. The town is definitely busier than past days and as there are now all forms

of transport able to access the town it has become quite crowded. More road side stalls have sprung up and they line the road all the way down to the camp site. To cope with the increase in traffic, some changes have been made to access to the main swimming beach and launch site and you can no longer drive through the camping ground and dive camps. You now have to detour around the back where the road enters a parking lot opposite the restaurant and beach bar. Ponto growth is most noticeable at night when you look at all the town lights which stretch back over the hill and almost connect with Ponto Malongane, the next town up north. The famous Gabriel’s Bar in the market is still there servings up the best R&R (Rum and Raspberry drink) and it’s still a great venue to sit and watch the hustle and bustle of an afternoon sunset. The same famous Peri Peri Chicken establishments are still there and they put out a good meal from their barbeque style ovens and they still sell most amazing bread (Pao) which has been our staple meal for years after the hours of surfing the world-famous break. The beach and surf break has not changed and if you crack the right winds and swell it gets a good as Jeffries Bay with long right hand waves peeling off the point in crystal clean 25-degree water. I have always found that one has to learn how to judge the wave and, with such clean water, it’s difficult to read the bottom of the wave and you end up messing up the first few until you can focus and find the sweet spot.

So, things are a little faster and more expensive up there nowadays, but it is still a great destination for a few days out of KZN. The locals warn that things get hectic now around the Mozambique Public Holidays because so many come from Maputo on busses to enjoy this jewel of a spot and beaches get packed out to the point where one will battle for a spot on the sand to pitch one’s umbrella. I did have a good laugh though when driving the sand road up north to Malongane. There are a few R&R Drive through Bars along the way which one will only see in Africa. A border official told me that in high season the queue to get through the border can stretch back up to 2km and sometimes people wait for up to 5 hrs to get through which is very unpleasant in the summer heat. The nice thing about the new road is that when the surf is blown out you can quickly pop into Maputo for a day’s outing which is about 90km from Ponto along the new road and over the very impressive suspension bridge leading into the city. If your holidays are taking you up north into Ponto and beyond, make sure you abide by the Mozambique Road Traffic Rules and Regulations. Happy Holidays Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf & Weather Report on 88FM Ballito.

ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLING –

A B E T T E R O PT IO N ? DAVE CHARLES

If a 4 day school week with added structure and flexibility and a no homework policy appeals to you, read on.

I

AM a firm believer in the value of education. As a parent, apart from love and support, the single biggest gift you can possibly give your children is the benefit of a good education. It guarantees nothing beyond preparing them to start their journey through life with the tools they will need to overcome the obstacles that they are sure to encounter along the way. But good tools are essential if you are going to do it right…ask any master craftsman.

Education has become big business in South Africa, but certificates don’t necessarily mean much beyond the paper they are written on and kids with good school grades often fail to thrive in the real world. Without doubt, the vibrant setting of a mainstream school is perfect for many kids. However, some learners are simply not cut out for that environment. There are many reasons for this and I am certainly not qualified to unpack them. Someone who is infinitely qualified though is Dane Padayachee, an excellent educator who opted out of the mainstream at the top of his game, because he was disillusioned with the system. He and a hand select group of top teachers, including two Doctors, two Engineers, two Chartered Accountants and two Masters Graduates, have created an alternative to formal schooling and, by all accounts, it is

hugely successful. Their vision encompasses a tailored learning approach to education. ‘Alternative Schooling’ does not aim to re-invent the wheel, simply to change the environment in which learning happens. Providing smaller classes and greater teacher-learner interaction results in greater engagement in learning. Their ethos and vision centres around the student and the focus is on their individual needs. “We are the middle ground between home-schooling and mainstream education. We offer a tailored approach to education with the benefit of structure, discipline and added flexibility. Our class sizes are a maximum of 12 learners, encouraging a greater focus on personalised learning and greater teacher interaction. Following leading research, our school follows a ‘no homework policy’ and eliminates non-essential project-based learning, reducing both child and parental angst.” It may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy more freedom to pursue what they are really passionate about, the four day week and no homework approach is attractive. And the results they have achieved speak for themselves – they have had to acquire bigger premises to accommodate the unprecedented demand for Alternative Schooling.

lec Mackay is every guitarist’s best friend. He is one of an exceeding rare breed of craftsmen qualified to be called a Luthier. So, what exactly is a Luthier? I so glad you asked. Here’s a dictionary definition:

“A luthier (/lu tier/ LOO-ti-er) is someone who builds or repairs string instruments generally consisting of a neck and a sound box. The word “luthier” comes from the French word luth, which means lute.” And there you have it – Ballito has a Luthier, and he’s extremely good as many people who have used his services can attest to.

Jack’s Paint and Hardware Ballito shares advice to keep your ceilings looking beautiful.

He has custom-made some of the finest guitars on the North Coast under the brand name ALVER. Largely based on the legendary Telecaster, Alver guitars are highly sought after by those who know, and if you come across one that happens to be for sale, grab it! He also does a bit of trading in high end instruments and, in particular, Fender Stratocasters. XPERIENCE urban dynamism at Odyssey, as it introduces the ultimate live-work-play lifestyle within KwaZuluNatal’s popular, coastal town; Ballito. Odyssey is the first innovative mixed-use developments within KwaZulu-Natal that encompasses healthcare offerings, along with retail, offices and residential opportunities. Odyssey is set to launch its first-rate retail component to the public by July 2020.

“Odyssey introduces a unique, innovative and convenient lifestyle solution to the Ballito area. As one of the few live-work-play, mixeduse developments to hit KwaZulu-Natal’s shores; Odyssey is the first to introduce healthcare as well,” shares Neil Cocker, Odyssey retail developer representative. “With there already being a strong retail presence in the Ballito area, Odyssey takes its offering one step ahead with strategically placed local, national and international retail placements that promote vitality, well-being and health-conscious living. Odyssey will become an iconic landmark in Ballito as it towers over other buildings and creates a rooftop piazza with panoramic views, including a sky restaurant creating a grand destination to visit,” explains Cocker. Research from Rainmaker Marketing, Africa’s leading property marketing organisation, shares that the value of

residential transfers has increased by 20% in the last 12 months from the year before. Furthermore, since 2011, Ballito has also experienced a huge population growth from 12 000 to 30 000, especially with 43% of new buyers within the age range of 36 – 46 years. As a result of this increase, it is evident that the demand for modern conveniences is fast increasing, making an opportunity like Odyssey a key development to enter into this region. GENERAL INTEREST 13

KZN

WINELANDS ARE COMING OF AGE

Laurie Cooper

L

KZN’s Laurie Cooper from Abingdon Wine Estate in the Midlands, now holds the title of Moët & Chandon’s Best Young Sommelier.

AURIE Cooper is the winemaker and sommelier at Abingdon Wine Estate in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands, the first familyowned estate to produce wines from the province. Together with her father, she runs all the viticulture and viniculture on the four-hectare property.

In January 2015, 24 year old Laurie Cooper founded the KZN School of Wine where she is the head lecturer. She is a distinction graduate from the Michael Fridjhon Wine Judging Academy and has served as a judge for the SAA wines selection panel as well as the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and London based IWSC. She works with the South African Sommeliers Association and Department of Tourism training sommeliers across South Africa and oversees the KZN division. We asked Laurie a few questions about her journey with wine.

032 946 3173

Q: How did your wine journey begin and what have been the defining moments so far? A: It began in London. I was working in a corporate office job and needed a way to end the day on a good note. I enrolled on the WSET wine courses and fell in love with the world of wine. I decided to move back to South Africa and make wine a full-time career. Winning a scholarship for sparkling wine was a defining moment ... It cemented my love for the wine industry and more specifically for bubbles! Q: How has this competition impacted you as a young sommelier? A: I have learnt so much ... Each step is a learning curve as to how to present yourself, calm your nerves, perform under pressure and how to train and encourage others in the industry in the future. It has been an incredible journey. Heading Food Maers is highly talented chef Jacqui Rey. With local and international training, she has more than 25 years’ experience in the food and catering industry. You will find her passion for great food reflected in her work, making Food Maers a clear projection of artistry. As well as catering to corporate events, private functions and weddings, Food Maers supplies some of the most delectable cakes this side of Durban!

www.foodmatters.co.za

NOW SERVING FOMO FROZEN MEALS

Q: What were some of the theoretical and practical aspects of winemaking addressed in this competition? A: To be a successful sommelier, all aspects of wine should be considered. It is important to understand different climates, grape varieties, soils and wine making techniques in order to succeed. Q: What is your favourite memory of wine? A: I remember tasting the first bottle of wine my parents ever made at Abingdon Estate, a 2007 Syrah/ Cabernet blend that made history as the first certified Estate Wine to come out of KZN. I was incredibly proud of what they had achieved against all odds and I moved back to SA from London to join the family business and start a career in wine.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring sommeliers? A: Just do it! When you doubt yourself and your nerves take over, enter the competitions, take the exams, grow. You will never know what you can achieve until you put yourself to the test. Each journey is a learning curve.

ABOUT ABINGDON Situated in the Midlands, just past the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Lion’s River, Abingdon was the first farm to produce a certified estate wine from KZN grapes with their maiden vintage in 2007. Visit abingdonestate.co.za

Lego has taken a hilarious swipe at Tesla over Elon Musk’s embarrassing Cybertruck reveal with their own ‘guaranteed shatterproof’ truck.

T

HE company’s Australian Facebook page shared an image of a Lego brick with wheels on Monday, reassuring any prospective buyers that their products are resistant to shattering.

The image was accompanied by the caption: ‘The evolution of the truck is here. Guaranteed shatterproof.’ Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk revealed a prototype of the Cybertruck last Thursday but testing of the lauded design features only ended in embarrassment. The Los Angeles event, which was supposed to show off the vehicle’s indestructible design and armoured windows, went horribly wrong when Musk invited Tesla lead designer Franz von Holzhausen to try smashing the truck to pieces. ‘You want a truck you can take a sledgehammer to, a truck that won’t scratch, doesn’t dent,’ Musk said.

Despite surviving a bludgeoning from a sledgehammer, the windows shattered when von Holzhausen lobbed metal balls at the ‘indestructible’ glass. Musk told the shocked audience that Tesla would ‘fix it in the post’ and that they’d thrown all manner of objects during the testing phase. ‘We threw wrenches, we threw everything - we even literally threw the kitchen sink at the glass and it didn’t break. For some weird reason it broke now, I don’t know why,’ he said. Lego, who’ve racked up 12,000 likes and more than 15,000 shares on the post in less than a day, is the latest to troll the electric vehicle giant since the blunder went viral on Thursday. Despite Thursday’s reveal clanger, Musk has boasted on Twitter that Tesla had already secured almost 150,000 orders.
