– AULD LANG SYNE, POEM BY ROBERT BURNS
NEW YEAR, A NEW BEgINNINg
Since 2016 is off and running, why not set some realistic goals for the year? Resolutions are meant to be broken but goals are achievable mile stones we set for ourselves. Recently I’ve found setting goals daily, weekly and monthly to be much more effective than just setting them at the beginning of the year. Reset ting the clock daily and weekly to ensure that the smaller goals are being achieved helps keep me on track to ensure the big ones are in view. It helps keep perspective. Whether you want to make a vision board, keep a gratitude diary or join an accountability group – the important thing is that we are always moving ahead – perhaps just measurable in tiny, baby steps – but always ahead. As the song that we sing as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve says, it’s time to say hello to new friends and good bye to old ones. We are pleased to welcome a new writer to Lifestyle Magazine. Kathy Rumleski brings her years of expe rience as a journalist and her enter taining storytelling style to enrich features for our readers.
Beth Moyer has been a member of the sales team for many years and has recently retired from Lifestyle Maga zine. Publisher Lana Breier said it well: “Beth has been a wonderful, caring and professional sales associate for the past 14 years. She will be missed by all of our team members, as well as the clients she served so well. We wish her all of the best in all of her retire ment dreams.” Having completed 15 years of pub lishing Lifestyle Magazine, we embark on our next 15 with great anticipation. We hope that our readers will enjoy the stories that we’ve included in our first issue of 2016, and we wish you a very happy new year!

Melchers doesn’t build the saMe house twice
BUILDING dreams By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
I
t was a banner year for Melchers Construction at the London Home Builders’ Association’s 2015 ACE Awards for creative excellence. The company walked away with the Renovator of the Year title for the fourth time in five years, along with six other “bests.” The recognition is always a thrill, says co-owner Chris Melchers. “It’s exciting every time because you never expect it.”
aboVe This award-winning artist’s studio addition looks over a lush pool area and exhibits clean, contemporary lines and uncluttered spaces. The bi-fold doors open to allow free movement between the kitchen and pool deck. Glass deck railings promote unobstructed views.
Such successes, he believes, can be attributed in large part to a passion for creativity in design and a commitment to work with clients to deliver exactly what they envision. Melchers’ other 2015 awards include best renovation under $26,000; best renovated bathroom in both the upto-$25,000 and over-$25,000 categories; best new kitchen in a home up to $500,000; best indoor living space; and best renovated exterior.
The latter two are favourites for Chris, as they demonstrate that design creativity. The exterior project – a three-season screened porch with gas fireplace – created “a whole new outdoor living space,” he says. The indoor space involved construction of a contemporary addition, incorporating an art studio that opens to an outdoor pool area, as well as a kitchen and bathroom.
leFtThe sleek lines and contemporary vibe of the indoor/ outdoor entertaining area provide a relaxed ambience. High-gloss white cabinetry is complemented by polished cherry cabinetry. Both are highlighted by ceiling-mounted pot lights.

BUILDING DREAMS Continued from page 9
This custom-built home in Woods Edge is a four-bedroom house. The feeling of space is enhanced by a two-storey foyer and 10-foot ceilings on the main floor. Melchers worked closely with the homeowners to create the right ambience by adding features like a sliding barn-style door for the master ensuite.
“We thrive on custom design builds,” Chris says. “We like to be creative and don’t build the same house twice.” “We thrive on custom design builds,” Chris says. Clients bring in their ideas, sometimes sketches or pictures they’ve found online, and are often amazed when they see what the design team comes up with after tweaking those rough concepts, he says. It’s an approach that’s working well with new homes as well, he notes. The company has always built new homes but is now expanding that component. They are offering executive
homes on estate-sized lots in the Mount Brydges neighbourhood of Woods Edge plus a development of detached condominiums and custom homes in Parkview Heights in Komoka. It’s a way to grow the business and keep things interesting, he says. “It’s a different kind of work, so we’re not doing the same thing every day.” There’s a model home now open in the Woods Edge subdivision. Chris says that the company has about a dozen
standard floorplans, but those are just a starting point. Clients make changes to suit their needs. “We haven’t built the same house twice,” he says. “We like it to be creative, no house the same.” He adds that clients also bring their own plans to the table. “We’ll sit down with them, get to know their lifestyle, their vision, their budget, and then build them the home of their dreams.” b

The Longford model home in Woods Edge features a fresh blue tone – a new colour to the Hardie Siding palette, which is highlighted by Arriscraft stone accents. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home also has a large covered deck overlooking the backyard.

Snug life By Erika Faust
The tale of a 21st-century fairy-tale cottage for sale
T
ucked away on Gainsborough Road, just past Bellamere Farms where the edge of the city gives way to sprawling fields and farmlands, there is a house that realtor John Crosby can only describe as “magical.” “It’s really not far from the city, but when I pull in the driveway and look at this cottage, it’s just a feeling that comes over you,” he says. “It totally reminds me of Hansel and Gretel.” The owners, who have lived here for more than three decades, have always referred to their home as Snug Cottage for two reasons: their daughter’s nickname is Snuggy and, fittingly, the original barn had a sign over the door that read The Snug. Crosby names all the properties he has for sale, and he says the name is a perfect fit. “Picture a cozy fire on a comfortable fall night, and you enjoy that year-round.” The home was built around 75 years ago. Since purchasing the property in 1981, the owners have made extensive renovations and additions. The work was completed with a combination of high-quality new and reclaimed materials. Though Crosby has a hard time choosing his favourite part of the CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT A traditional white lattice arbour welcomes visitors to magical Snug Cottage.
home, he says there is one special standout. “I could live year-round in the kitchen,” he says. “It’s just a chef’s dream.” It is everything you’d look for in a country kitchen: it’s bright, warm and welcoming, complete with a crackling fireplace. Cherry cabinets, a large cherry island, Corian countertops, and high-end appliances add a touch of modernity to the space without losing the charm. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms make this a perfect home for a family that loves the outdoors but doesn’t want to give up modern conveniences. The two-acre property is reminiscent of an English garden and comes alive with winter aconite, bluebells, snowdrops, grape hyacinths and trilliums. The grounds feature a high-tech hobby greenhouse, a concrete inground pool complete with cabana and outdoor shower and an outbuilding that has been transformed into a sophisticated woodworking shop. Generations of kids have enjoyed the pond as an ice skating rink in the winter, with the wood stove in the nearby outbuilding providing a comfy escape from the wind. b

we can make your view delightful! We are proud owners of a family-operated home improvement business, specializing in replacement windows and doors from North Star. Our father Grant Stephenson started the business in 1959. We grew up working for him and eventually sons Carl and Marvin took over the business. We are still a totally family run company with the exception of our employee Art Maloney who looks after the shop. We take great pride in the fact that we not only sell the windows and doors ourselves, but we also do all the labour and installation. This fact means you will not receive a quote on your job from a high-pressure salesman, but from someone who does the actual work and knows what is the best most economical way to do it. We are willing to work with your ideas or to offer you our own in order to come up with exactly what you want, at a price you can afford. We are a team of professionals that will service your job from start to finish. We can proudly say that we do an efficient job and everything is cleaned up when we are finished. Yes, the products are superior but the business is based on service to you, our customer. We are so confident that you will be happy with any job we complete, that we offer a LIFE TIME WARRANTY on our workmanship.

hen you walk into the London showroom at Casey’s Creative Kitchens, every design on display stands out. Exquisite lines and colours highlight the well-crafted pieces used to make anyone’s kitchen dreams come true. It’s why the nearly 40-year-old company continues to collect prizes for its work, and its young, ambitious design team is also racking up accolades. One of them, Benjamin Ouellette, 29, was named a National Kitchen and Bath Association Top 30 Under 30. Recognized out of hundreds of applicants, he’ll be speaking at the industry’s annual show in Las Vegas in January. “My (speech) angle is taking it back to the five senses, taking product trends and looking at them individually for each sense,” he says. Ouellette works at the company’s Waterloo location, one of five in southwestern Ontario.

Young guns of Casey’s Creative Kitchens take aim at success
“We’re all very creative people. We look at a space ... from a holistic point of view.” Casey’s Creative Kitchens was opened in St. Thomas by Casey and Linda Willemse in 1978. Today, Casey is semi-retired and Linda takes care of the accounting. Their three children are involved in the business: son Chris is company president; daughter Jennifer McIlveen is human resources and marketing director; son Jamie runs the company’s granite and engineered quartz fabrication shop. In addition to Ouellette’s award, Casey’s Creative Kitchens has won the local Consumer Choice Award three years running and the London Free Press Best of London Award for four. Two designers recently received London Home Builders’ Association awards. Sarah Van Zeumeren, 29, won the top kitchen renovation under $50,000 category.
She worked with a client in Old North who wasn’t afraid to take some risks. “We put the kitchen in the dining room. It was a really great transformation,” she says. Brianne Hughes, 27, was part of a team that won best new home bathroom. “It’s that recognition for your work and it was just such a wow. It was very, very exciting,” Hughes says. The young designers say they are thankful they have learned under Casey and work in a team-oriented environment. It’s why the company is so successful, they say. Bold, youthful designers coupled with wisdom and experience make a successful combination. “I look at our group here. They’re taking things to a whole new level. They’re really reinventing spaces,” McIlveen says. n FOR MORE INFORMATION Casey’s Creative Kitchens 4045 Blakie Road 519-652-9029 • www.caseyscreativekitchens.com

ike Manuel, the owner of the London Music Hall, is doing his part to bring new life to downtown London – and he’s doing it by embracing some old concepts.
“Our vision is to keep doing what we’re doing: keep booking great acts. We take pride in our in-house production and staff here,” he says. “If you build it, they will come.” It’s a philosophy that’s led to the expansion of the London Music Hall into one of the best music facilities in the city. “We started seeing growth in the music industry in London. We definitely needed that extra space. We knew that we needed to grow and develop a bigger music scene in London,” he says. “We took that step and that risk. Thankfully it paid off.” There was a gap in London between the 9,000-plus seat Budweiser Gardens and the smaller clubs that was resulting in missed opportunities for the Forest City.

“Obviously Budweiser Garden has been a big success in London, but we’re filling a void,” he said. “The mid-level acts were skipping the London market because they didn’t have a place to play or the routing didn’t work out. We filled that void for B to C acts. “We’re changing the whole scene on Dundas. We’re bringing in an A&W franchise. We’re changing the whole front to a new marquee and digital signage so that it will change the whole look of Dundas.” Manuel says he remembers a time when London was a music destination – and that’s because of a music scene and venues that complemented each other. Green Velvet (aka Cajmere) will be at the London Music Hall on January 29.
“The reason it went away was the lack of venues. In the ’80s – and I’ve been in London since 1981 – there was Kiplings, The Firehall, Mingles, Fryfogle’s,” he said. “These had disappeared and we’re hoping that more of them will come back to the city and make this a great music city.” The London Music Hall also hosts other corporate and charitable events, and it’s all part of the plan to encourage more people to come to the core. “We’re very big on corporate events, fundraisers, networking – we’ll support them wherever we can,” he said. “Let’s bring more stuff downtown, whether it’s at the Music Hall, the theatre, the Budweiser Gardens – it just builds more momentum.” b

the construction industry and works toward that as vice-chair of the Better Business Bureau board of directors. In 2011, Covenant expanded its services, venturing into the cabinetry business. In partnership with long-time cabinetry designer Casey Fawcett, it launched Inspired Woodworks, creating innovative millwork design for both custom homebuilders and retail clients. Says one satisfied customer: “I have been in a lot of homes where the cabinetry is almost an afterthought. Casey met with me, did an inventory of appliances, (saw) how I work in a kitchen and the end result is perfect.” Clients also comment that they appreciate the professionalism and thoroughness shown by Covenant workers. “With two great companies, we offer one amazing solution,” Hardy says. “Detail by detail, we complete the entire project, whether it’s renovating a frustrating mudroom, removing walls to create a dream kitchen, or building an addition or a custom home.” n

SUNROOMS Ultimate
Enjoying the backyard sunshine doesn’t have to be an activity exclusive to summertime. Tropical Sunrooms creates year-round spaces to relax and soak up the sun. “We build three- and four-season sunrooms and solariums, as well as
porch enclosures, built in Canada for the Canadian climate,” says design consultant Kenn Platt, who is heading up a new London showroom for the Kitchener-based company. Launched in 1988, by owner Dave Sawatsky, Tropical Sunrooms has been serving clients across southwestern Ontario for more than a quarter century from its original location. It expanded to open its satellite location in Lambeth, in London’s southwest corner, just last summer. “Opening this showroom will offer our customers in this region a more central location to come and see our latest innovations without driving so far,” Platt says. An open house to introduce local customers to the new display space is planned for March, he adds. The company is noted for completing projects start to finish, including obtaining permits and ensuring that Ontario Building Code requirements are met. A unique offering, Platt says, is creating three-dimensional drawings of the addition that allow clients to see how it will look on their own home before giving the go-ahead. n

At Coni-Marble Manufacturing providing bathroom fixtures and countertop solutions is a true family affair. The London company has been family-owned and operated since its launch in 1969 and today involves three generations in the business. “It’s very much a family business,” says Deborah Clemens, general manager. “It’s not unusual to have one of the owners come and measure your bathroom shower.”
As well as keeping it in the family, the company keeps its work in-house. “We don’t contract out,” Clemens says. “Everyone who goes out to represent Coni-Marble is a Coni-Marble employee.” All products are custom-made to the client’s specifications and requirements. The company manufactures its own Coni-marble, a synthetic marble product primarily used for showers, bathtubs, tub surrounds and vanity tops. “We manufacture and distribute that. It’s our product,” Clemens says. It also manufactures Avian Solid Surfacing, as well as fabricating other solid surface countertops. And, it provides engineered quartz countertops, purchasing slabs from various manufacturers – such as Hanstone, Caesarstone or Zodiaq – and fabricating the counters in its own stone shop. A third countertop material, Neolith, a natural sintered compact surface product that is scratch and stain resistant and able to withstand temperature extremes, is imported from Spain by Coni-Marble. n

Quality service and workmanship with a personal touch is what Homecastle Windows and Doors has been bringing to its customers for more than a quarter century. “We are 25 years in the same location and with the same suppliers of Canadian-made products,” says company owner Jim Versteegh. Furthermore, he says, all Homecastle installers are full-time employees of the company, providing that personal touch.
Versteegh is also proud of the workmanship of his team. “Installations are completed start to finish, including removal and reinstallation of blinds and drapes, as well as total cleanup inside and out, with removal of debris,” he says. And, he adds, the workmanship is warrantied for as long as the client remains in the home. Homecastle provides a wide range of products, including vinyl and wood windows and entrance, garden and patio doors, as well as vinyl siding in a variety of textures and profiles. It also specializes in window and door renovation work. Versteegh says the business is growing each year, and the expansion is built on referrals and repeat customers. Over time, the company has also expanded its services. In 2005, it added a full-service millwork shop, providing clients with custom cabinetry. In 2008, it was registered as a representative with Tarion, regulating new home builders, and began to build custom homes. “As a result of those developments, home owners enjoy the convenience of having design, building permits, construction and interior finishes all completed under one roof,” Vaandering says. CCR Building and Remodeling Pairing sustainability with modernity Flexibility and sustainability are two key strengths that CCR Building and Remodeling brings to the business of moulding its clients’ dreams into reality, says Peder Madsen. He operates the company with his father, Arne. Flexibility is something that’s evolved
over the 27 years since Arne founded Creative Carpentry Renovations in 1989, doing custom cabinetry and carpentry and eventually progressing to renovating bathrooms, kitchens, creating additions and redesigning whole homes. “Customers compliment us on being accommodating to changes,” Peder says. Working with older homes, he says, often means uncovering problem areas. “But if you look at that as an opportunity, rather than a difficulty, you can make these spaces open up in ways that never could have been fathomed at the preliminary design stage.” Sustainability is an area where Peder has developed a keen interest. “We’re refurbishing spaces and bringing them up to modern standards of sustainability,” he says. “We’re making homes more efficient. And we’re taking homes that might need to be taken down and making them beautiful again.” The company undertakes a wide range of renovation work. “We’re taking spaces from all eras and providing what people expect in a home today,” Peder says. “We’re geared to that challenge.” n January/February 2016

Art meets skill
Okewood Timberworks uses time-tested methods
By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
A FROM THE TOP From free-standing pergolas, to front entry canopies or entire buildings and additions, Okewood Timberworks uses three-dimensional design technologies, then carefully selects, shapes and installs each piece of timber. 38 Lifestyle January/February 2016
lex Oke is a skilled carpenter and timber framer. He’s also an artisan, who has created a niche timber framing business in southwestern Ontario, at Okewood Timberworks, where he creates handcrafted structures. While many timber framing companies use computer controlled CNC machinery to cut their wood pieces factory style, Oke fashions each piece individually. He uses traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon connections and oak pegs, to eliminate metal fasteners and create a strong and lasting, yet unique, structure.
“It is an art more than a skill,” Oke says. “Each piece of wood is different, each knot is different, and the grain will pull out differently on one piece from another. So you’ve got to learn the wood and learn what’s it’s doing.” He and fellow framer, Liam Beirne, have taken on projects from adding timber accents in home interiors - trim, cabinets, tongueand-groove flooring, rafters in great rooms - to building full homes. Oke’s first project was building a ski chalet in Beaver Valley, and he recently built a home outside Lucan. But much of the business involves

projects such as front entranceways, covered porches and patios or backyard cabanas. “About 80 per cent of our business is exterior work, people wanting to add a bit of curb appeal,” he says. The use of timber is definitely growing in popularity, he adds. “Everybody’s liking the wood products now, more than ever, especially with live edge tables and things like that — something we do as well.”
While many timber framing companies use computer controlled CNC machinery to cut their wood pieces factory style, Oke fashions each piece individually. Oke also works with clients to design the projects. While he uses a computer program to create a three-dimensional design so the customer can see how the finished product will look, the physical work, from choosing individual timbers, cutting, notching, jointing and installing is done by hand. “It’s kind of neat that everything is done in-house,” he says. “Everything is right there, a one-stop shop. We can handle everything a customer needs out of wood in one spot.” b

More than 35,000 satisfied customers over 35-plus years is testament to the quality service provided by Lormac Renovation Centre, says president Kathie Wolak. “Our business and our reputation are built on trust, integrity and quality,” Wolak says.
The exterior renovation company – specializing in windows, doors, siding, soffit, fascia, eavestroughs and gutter guards – is the third-oldest business in its industry in London and remains a family enterprise. For more than a quarter century, Wolak worked side by side with her father, Lorne MacDonnell, who founded the business in 1979. Following MacDonnell’s retirement in 2013, Wolak and her husband, Henry, took over the helm. They take pride in offering the same high-quality customer service that MacDonnell pioneered. “Our installers are second to none in southwestern Ontario,” Wolak says. The product and their workmanship are backed by “the strongest warranty in our industry.” It’s a lifetime warranty, non-prorated and transferrable. Lormac is a certified as both a dealer and an installer with Window Wise, a program created by the Siding and Window Dealer Association of Canada to provide additional warranty and peace of mind. The company is a two-time London Consumer Choice Award winner and A-plus rated charter member of the Better Business Bureau. n
Duo Building Customers for life Happy customers are the key to success. That’s something that Patrick Malloy, owner of Duo Building, and his 28-person team take seriously. They know that satisfied customers lead to repeat business and referrals. For 37 years, they have gone the extra mile to ensure customers’ expectations are met, Malloy says. “We take pride in what we do. We are continually growing our talent and expertise in the industry.”
Duo Building, a one-stop shop for renovation projects, specializes in residential and commercial buildings and custom homes. They have carpenters on-site from beginning to completion of projects, ensuring minimal downtime. They communicate with their clients using a cloud-based system. “We work hard to ensure our clients’ projects meet their vision, finish on time and on budget,” Malloy says. The company-client relationship doesn’t end with completion of the project. Duo offers a three-year warranty on workmanship and a promise to look after client needs well into the future. “When you sign up with Duo, you are a customer for life,” Malloy says. “We look after you and we take care of your needs promptly. alking tours that explore the world of voodoo and vampires, food reminiscent of its Cajun and Creole roots, buildings that drip with history – what’s not to love about New Orleans? Visiting in the weeks building up to Mardi Gras (festivities begin in January) is the perfect time to leave our cold climes and take a trip to this Mississippi River Delta town. First up – hit Bourbon Street, cup in hand. When night falls, barriers go up and the street is closed to cars so revelers can carry on carefree. The street is patrolled by NOLA’s own mounted police. Mardi Gras is a great excuse to visit New Orleans more touristy and grittier than on previous visits. Those looking for live music, especially jazz, should not miss the newer music district on Frenchmen Street. This jumping four-block area offers restaurants, bars and belted-out tunes. An artisans’ market springs up most nights, offering handmade goods and local art. Head over to Jackson Square to see the street artists and the statue of General Jackson sitting atop his horse in this beautiful park. Here you can jump into one of a dozen walking tours

Off the lobby, the chic bar serves an array of cool cocktails perfect for parched throats in this glam atmosphere. A foodie destination, the Crescent City offers Cajun creations like gumbo and jambalaya and seafood delights.
One not-to-be-missed treat is the grilled oysters at Acme Oyster House. You just have to try to believe. To enjoy a delicious meal in a more upscale environment, Marti’s Restaurant offers amazing roasted oysters, fish with remoulade, followed by the universal favourite chocolate hot pot. America’s original restaurant, Antoine’s, offers traditional New Orleans delights in 15 dining rooms, while Court of Two Sisters’ patio stands out as the place to enjoy a special Sunday brunch, complete with seafood and shrimp Creole omelets and turtle soup au sherry. If you want something more casual, the Napoleon House is one of several places that serves the world-famous muffaletta sandwich.
Water is a key ingredient to fun in NOLA. Ride on the Steamboat Natchez and marvel at massive ships also navigating the mighty Mississippi. Gaze at it from the balcony of Houmas House, one of several beautiful and historic plantations to tour near the city. Stroll through the cool halls of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. Scoot along on a boat during a swamp tour, waiting to catch a glimpse of an alligator or feral pig. Mulch madness
The Stratford Garden Festival blooms again By Erika Faust
A
fter months of frozen ground and gloomy days, many gardeners are longing for warmer temperatures so they can get back to their roots. Gardening weather may still be a few long weeks away, but spring is coming early with the Stratford Garden Festival from March 3 to 6 at the Stratford Rotary Complex, 353 McCarthy Road. Since 2001, the annual event has raised more than $850,000 to support The Lung Association’s medical research commitments and lung health initiatives. “You come out of a cold parking lot
and you walk in and, for me, it’s just the smell,” describes Deedee Herman of The Lung Association. “It’s warm, it smells like mulch, and there are live, blooming things.” Landscapers come from across Southwestern Ontario to create eight gorgeous gardens in 20-foot by 20-foot plots. The designs are generally accessible to the average home gardener, Herman says. “People take ideas home. It’s not a show where the gardens are so huge, over the top and they’re fabulous to look at, but they’re irrelevant to your own little plot of earth. People can really look at some of the things [at the
festival] and say, ‘Oh, that’s quite cool. I could do that in my backyard.’” The four-day festival includes a garden party, a seniors’ tea, a family fun night and a speaker series that features some of the top names in the Canadian gardening world – check the website for more details. The event is sponsored by ProResp, a Canadian-owned provider of home respiratory services. b

Perfect the
pairing N
othing says love like wine and chocolate. Some prefer one, some the other, but pairing them is ambrosia to many. The powerful duo is now available daily at two of the city’s most sumptuous places to sip wine and slurp chocolates.
In Byron, Forrat’s Chocolates and Lounge has been offering the area’s best selling vintages for five years, according to chocolatier and owner Marc Forrat. “We don’t really do pairings. We offer a low-key wine bar and high-end, quality chocolate” at the lounge. With sofas, a fireplace and a casual atmosphere, enjoying favourite wines and chocolates is a cozy experience for lovers or friends during the winter months. Pick up some chocolatey love for your Valentine before the big day at one of the retail operations. Forrat is happy that he has two new locations recently opened in Westmount Mall (in the upstairs food court) and 46 Lifestyle January/February 2016
Cherryhill Village Mall (near Metro). The original location has been a fixture at Covent Garden Market for 12 years. Hamiltonians have been able to get their fill of sweet love at Forrat’s on Locke for six years. Originally from Brazil, Forrat met his wife Elia when he was living in France and she was there as a Western University exchange student. He’s lived in and grown his chocolate empire in the Forest City since. Forrat is supplying two special chocolates for the London Wine Bar, where you are also able to enjoy favourite vintages and nibble on milk and dark chocolate treats. This downtown dining venue’s
cozy atmosphere is entirely intentional, according to co-owner Mario Jozic. “We aren’t wine snobs,” he explains, “because we want to serve really good wine in a cozy relaxed setting where people can wear what they like and enjoy good food and wine with friends.” Partners in life since they met in religion class at Catholic Central High School, he and Laura Del Maestro have travelled the world to gain the knowledge they bring to the kitchen and the bar. The two offerings available only at this location are a slightly salty milk chocolate with small chunks of dried fruit in it – called Tropical Sea Salt

“These wines are very fruit-forward, so they work well with the chocolates,” says Del Maestro. “I really think these go well with wine,” Forrat explains, “and that’s how I came up with those particular flavours.” London Wine Bar also offers dining options that are all served on

Greying and/or thinning hair may dictate a change in colour and hairstyle. Badr cautions that grey hair looks great on many who can pull it off, while it can age others 10 to 15 years. As we age, the colour, texture and density of our hair changes due to fluctuations in the body’s hormone levels. Medications, diet, stress and long-term exposure to the environment can also be contributing factors. According to Nina Badr, of NU Hair and Make Up Studio, the rate of hair growth slows as its pigment also decreases. Dodie Wright, of Wright Hair and Co., agrees, saying “Those pesky white hairs that suddenly appear are coarser and harder to manage.” Since 50 is the new 30 and 60 the new 40, we want our hair to reflect our youthful mindset, so these two hair pros have some advice. “Begin by eating a healthy, wellbalanced diet, filled with natural sources of vitamins and anti-oxidant

foods,” says Badr, as the first step in re-energizing tired hair. Greying and/or thinning hair may dictate a change in colour and hairstyle. Badr cautions that grey hair looks great on many who can pull it off, while it can age others 10 to 15 years. “The absence of colour in your hair drains your skin colour as well,” she says. Conversely, if you’ve lightened your hair colour for decades, it may be time to go a few shades darker or add low-lights. “It will add dimension and you will avoid looking washed out,” according to Badr. Changes in density or texture may mean a new cut is in order. “Shortening your hair length and adding soft layers will give your hair more fullness,” she adds. The products you choose can help reverse the effects of time on your hair. Wright recommends Moroccanoil Thickening Lotion or Schwarzkopf Osis Upload Volume Cream, which will make hair look fuller. “Use a light cream because you don’t want a heavy product that will weigh down hair,” she says. She also recommends Schwarzkopf’s BC Color Freeze line: shampoo, conditioner and cream. “It’s really great for hair management, as it restores the hair’s natural PH, locks in the colour and smooths frizz from hair that is coarser as we age.” For gentlemen who are losing their hair, both recommend the Nioxin line of products, as it cleans the cuticle and promotes hair growth. n

Road trip reward
By Jill Ellis-Worthington
Stop into GroG’S pub and Grill for Good food and Good fun
T
he austere beauty of Lake Huron’s glacier-like shores and sparkling ice-covered trees make a perfect road trip to relieve a long winter’s cabin fever. And when the sun has set in spectacular fashion over the lake, stop into Grog’s for one of their famous pizzas, invites owner Veronica Brennan. This popular summer stop-off is just as much fun in the winter. It has its own access point to the area’s popular snowmobile trail, which was created by Brennan in 2013. “We’re very popular with snowmobilers who want to stop and warm up,” she says. In the summer, when the population of Grand Bend and Port Franks triples,
Grog’s is a great place to enjoy a meal in the sunshine. The patio was added in 2007 and a second one is planned for next year. Grog’s friendly, quaint atmosphere has been enhanced over the years as renovations and additions have been made, but Brennan feels that her dedicated staff members and the excellent service they offer is a key ingredient to the restaurant’s success. “We have 55 to 65 staff members, depending on the season, and many are teens from around the area. We want to give them work experience and they bring a sense of vitality.” Zaney Bread, a crowd favourite on the menu, was developed by the restaur-
ant’s first server. The cheese-stuffed dish is even named in her honour, according to Brennan. Fresh, local ingredients are used as much as possible. Grog’s also offers local cider from nearby Twin Pines Orchards as well as a full array of beer brands on tap. Brennan feels that it’s important to give back to the community. She supports an array of local sports teams, as well as an annual golf tournament that has raised $21,000 over four years for cancer research. b
