Since 2016 is off and running, why not set some realistic goals for the year? Resolutions are meant to be broken but goals are achievable mile­ stones we set for ourselves.

Recently I’ve found setting goals daily, weekly and monthly to be much more effective than just setting them at the beginning of the year. Reset­ ting the clock daily and weekly to ensure that the smaller goals are being achieved helps keep me on track to ensure the big ones are in view. It helps keep perspective.

Whether you want to make a vision board, keep a gratitude diary or join an accountability group – the important thing is that we are always moving ahead – perhaps just measurable in tiny, baby steps – but always ahead.

As the song that we sing as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve says, it’s time to say hello to new friends and good bye to old ones.

We are pleased to welcome a new writer to Lifestyle Magazine. Kathy Rumleski brings her years of expe­ rience as a journalist and her enter­ taining storytelling style to enrich features for our readers.

Beth Moyer has been a member of the sales team for many years and has recently retired from Lifestyle Maga­ zine. Publisher Lana Breier said it well: “Beth has been a wonderful, caring and professional sales associate for the past 14 years. I

t was a banner year for Melchers Construction at the London Home Builders’ Association’s 2015 ACE Awards for creative excellence.

The company walked away with the Renovator of the Year title for the fourth time in five years, along with six other “bests.”

The recognition is always a thrill, says co-owner Chris Melchers. “It’s exciting every time because you never expect it.”

Such successes, he believes, can be attributed in large part to a passion for creativity in design and a commitment to work with clients to deliver exactly what they envision.

Melchers’ other 2015 awards include best renovation under $26,000; best renovated bathroom in both the upto-$25,000 and over-$25,000 categories; best new kitchen in a home up to $500,000; best indoor living space; and best renovated exterior.

The latter two are favourites for Chris, as they demonstrate that design creativity.

The exterior project – a three-season screened porch with gas fireplace – created “a whole new outdoor living space,” he says.

The indoor space involved construction of a contemporary addition, incorporating an art studio that opens to an outdoor pool area, as well as a kitchen and bathroom. 

This custom-built home in Woods Edge is a four-bedroom house. The feeling of space is enhanced by a two-storey foyer and 10-foot ceilings on the main floor. Melchers worked closely with the homeowners to create the right ambience by adding features like a sliding barn-style door for the master ensuite.

“We thrive on custom design builds,” Chris says.

“We like to be creative and don’t build the same house twice.”

“We thrive on custom design builds,” Chris says. Clients bring in their ideas, sometimes sketches or pictures they’ve found online, and are often amazed when they see what the design team comes up with after tweaking those rough concepts, he says.

It’s an approach that’s working well with new homes as well, he notes.

The company has always built new homes but is now expanding that component. They are offering executive

homes on estate-sized lots in the Mount Brydges neighbourhood of Woods Edge plus a development of detached condominiums and custom homes in Parkview Heights in Komoka.

It’s a way to grow the business and keep things interesting, he says. “It’s a different kind of work, so we’re not doing the same thing every day.”

There’s a model home now open in the Woods Edge subdivision. Chris says that the company has about a dozen

standard floorplans, but those are just a starting point. Clients make changes to suit their needs.

“We haven’t built the same house twice,” he says. “We like it to be creative, no house the same.”

He adds that clients also bring their own plans to the table.

“We’ll sit down with them, get to know their lifestyle, their vision, their budget, and then build them the home of their dreams.” b

The tale of a 21st-century fairy-tale cottage for sale

T

ucked away on Gainsborough Road, just past Bellamere Farms where the edge of the city gives way to sprawling fields and farmlands, there is a house that realtor John Crosby can only describe as “magical.”

“It’s really not far from the city, but when I pull in the driveway and look at this cottage, it’s just a feeling that comes over you,” he says. “It totally reminds me of Hansel and Gretel.”

The owners, who have lived here for more than three decades, have always referred to their home as Snug Cottage for two reasons: their daughter’s nickname is Snuggy and, fittingly, the original barn had a sign over the door that read The Snug.

Crosby names all the properties he has for sale, and he says the name is a perfect fit. “Picture a cozy fire on a comfortable fall night, and you enjoy that year-round.”

The home was built around 75 years ago. Since purchasing the property in 1981, the owners have made extensive renovations and additions. The work was completed with a combination of high-quality new and reclaimed materials.

It is everything you’d look for in a country kitchen: it’s bright, warm and welcoming, complete with a crackling fireplace. Cherry cabinets, a large cherry island, Corian countertops, and high-end appliances add a touch of modernity to the space without losing the charm.

Three bedrooms and three bathrooms make this a perfect home for a family that loves the outdoors but doesn’t want to give up modern conveniences.

The two-acre property is reminiscent of an English garden and comes alive with winter aconite, bluebells, snowdrops, grape hyacinths and trilliums.

W

hen you walk into the London showroom at Casey’s Creative Kitchens, every design on display stands out.

Exquisite lines and colours highlight the well-crafted pieces used to make anyone’s kitchen dreams come true.

It’s why the nearly 40-year-old company continues to collect prizes for its work, and its young, ambitious design team is also racking up accolades.

One of them, Benjamin Ouellette, 29, was named a National Kitchen and Bath Association Top 30 Under 30.

Recognized out of hundreds of applicants, he’ll be speaking at the industry’s annual show in Las Vegas in January.

“My (speech) angle is taking it back to the five senses, taking product trends and looking at them individually for each sense,” he says.

Ouellette works at the company’s Waterloo location, one of five in southwestern Ontario.

Young guns of Casey’s Creative Kitchens take aim at success

Casey’s Creative Kitchens was opened in St. Thomas by Casey and Linda Willemse in 1978.

Today, Casey is semi-retired and Linda takes care of the accounting. Their three children are involved in the business: son Chris is company president; daughter Jennifer McIlveen is human resources and marketing director; son Jamie runs the company’s granite and engineered quartz fabrication shop.

In addition to Ouellette’s award, Casey’s Creative Kitchens has won the local Consumer Choice Award three years running and the London Free Press Best of London Award for four.

Two designers recently received London Home Builders’ Association awards.

Sarah Van Zeumeren, 29, won the top kitchen renovation under $50,000 category.

She worked with a client in Old North who wasn’t afraid to take some risks. “We put the kitchen in the dining room. It was a really great transformation,” she says.

Brianne Hughes, 27, was part of a team that won best new home bathroom. “It’s that recognition for your work and it was just such a wow. It was very, very exciting,” Hughes says.

The young designers say they are thankful they have learned under Casey and work in a team-oriented environment.

It’s why the company is so successful, they say. Bold, youthful designers coupled with wisdom and experience make a successful combination.

“I look at our group here. They’re taking things to a whole new level.

M

ike Manuel, the owner of the London Music Hall, is doing his part to bring new life to downtown London – and he’s doing it by embracing some old concepts.

“Our vision is to keep doing what we’re doing: keep booking great acts. We take pride in our in-house production and staff here,” he says. “If you build it, they will come.”

It’s a philosophy that’s led to the expansion of the London Music Hall into one of the best music facilities in the city.

“We started seeing growth in the music industry in London. We definitely needed that extra space. We knew that we needed to grow and develop a bigger music scene in London,” he says. “We took that step and that risk.

Thankfully it paid off.”

There was a gap in London between the 9,000-plus seat Budweiser Gardens and the smaller clubs that was resulting in missed opportunities for the Forest City. 

“Obviously Budweiser Garden has been a big success in London, but we’re filling a void,” he said. “The mid-level acts were skipping the London market because they didn’t have a place to play or the routing didn’t work out. We filled that void for B to C acts.

“We’re changing the whole scene on Dundas. We’re bringing in an A&W franchise. We’re changing the whole front to a new marquee and digital signage so that it will change the whole look of Dundas.”

Manuel says he remembers a time when London was a music destination – and that’s because of a music scene and venues that complemented each other.

Green Velvet (aka Cajmere) will be at the London Music Hall on January 29.

“The reason it went away was the lack of venues. In the ’80s – and I’ve been in London since 1981 – there was Kiplings, The Firehall, Mingles, Fryfogle’s,” he said. “These had disappeared and we’re hoping that more of them will come back to the city and make this a great music city.”

The London Music Hall also hosts other corporate and charitable events, and it’s all part of the plan to encourage more people to come to the core.

“We’re very big on corporate events, fundraisers, networking – we’ll support them wherever we can,” he said. “Let’s bring more stuff downtown, whether it’s at the Music Hall, the theatre, the Budweiser Gardens – it just builds more momentum.” b

At Coni-Marble Manufacturing providing bathroom fixtures and countertop solutions is a true family affair.

The London company has been family-owned and operated since its launch in 1969 and today involves three generations in the business.

“It’s very much a family business,” says Deborah Clemens, general manager.

“It’s not unusual to have one of the owners come and measure your bathroom shower.”

As well as keeping it in the family, the company keeps its work in-house.

A third countertop material, Neolith, a natural sintered compact surface product that is scratch and stain resistant and able to withstand temperature extremes, is imported from Spain by Coni-Marble. n

1996, Millennium has grown to comprise a team of 24 carpenters, auto cad designers, cabinetmakers, support staff and apprentices, as well as a substantial crew of sub-trades.

“Those 20 years have brought us a number of awards for projects that Millennium is proud to have designed and built,” says Mark Vaandering, director of sales and design and co-founder with carpenter/cabinetmaker Jeff Bruinsma.

Over time, the company has also expanded its services.

In 2005, it added a full-service millwork shop, providing clients with custom cabinetry.

In 2008, it was registered as a representative with Tarion, regulating new home builders, and began to build custom homes.

“As a result of those developments, home owners enjoy the convenience of having design, building permits, construction and interior finishes all completed under one roof,” Vaandering says.

He adds that community involvement has always been important for Millennium, from hiring local professionals and apprentices to being involved with volunteer projects such as the annual Business Cares food drive. n

Working with older homes, he says, often means uncovering problem areas. “But if you look at that as an opportunity, rather than a difficulty, you can make these spaces open up in ways that never could have been fathomed at the preliminary design stage.”

Sustainability is an area where Peder has developed a keen interest.

“We’re refurbishing spaces and bringing them up to modern standards of sustainability,” he says. “We’re making homes more efficient. And we’re taking homes that might need to be taken down and making them beautiful again.”

The company undertakes a wide range of renovation work.

“We’re taking spaces from all eras and providing what people expect in a home today,” Peder says. “We’re geared to that challenge.” n January/February 2016

lex Oke is a skilled carpenter and timber framer. He’s also an artisan, who has created a niche timber framing business in southwestern Ontario, at Okewood Timberworks, where he creates handcrafted structures.

While many timber framing companies use computer controlled CNC machinery to cut their wood pieces factory style, Oke fashions each piece individually. He uses traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon connections and oak pegs, to eliminate metal fasteners and create a strong and lasting, yet unique, structure.

“It is an art more than a skill,” Oke says. “Each piece of wood is different, each knot is different, and the grain will pull out differently on one piece from another. So you’ve got to learn the wood and learn what’s it’s doing.”

He and fellow framer, Liam Beirne, have taken on projects from adding timber accents in home interiors - trim, cabinets, tongueand-groove flooring, rafters in great rooms - to building full homes. Oke’s first project was building a ski chalet in Beaver Valley, and he recently built a home outside Lucan.

projects such as front entranceways, covered porches and patios or backyard cabanas. “About 80 per cent of our business is exterior work, people wanting to add a bit of curb appeal,” he says.

alking tours that explore the world of voodoo and vampires, food reminiscent of its Cajun and Creole roots, buildings that drip with history – what’s not to love about New Orleans? Visiting in the weeks building up to Mardi Gras (festivities begin in January) is the perfect time to leave our cold climes and take a trip to this Mississippi River Delta town.

First up – hit Bourbon Street, cup in hand. When night falls, barriers go up and the street is closed to cars so revelers can carry on carefree. The street is patrolled by NOLA’s own mounted police.

The Stratford Garden Festival blooms again

A

fter months of frozen ground and gloomy days, many gardeners are longing for warmer temperatures so they can get back to their roots.

Gardening weather may still be a few long weeks away, but spring is coming early with the Stratford Garden Festival from March 3 to 6 at the Stratford Rotary Complex, 353 McCarthy Road.

Since 2001, the annual event has raised more than $850,000 to support The Lung Association’s medical research commitments and lung health initiatives.

“You come out of a cold parking lot

and you walk in and, for me, it’s just the smell,” describes Deedee Herman of The Lung Association. “It’s warm, it smells like mulch, and there are live, blooming things.”

Landscapers come from across Southwestern Ontario to create eight gorgeous gardens in 20-foot by 20-foot plots. The designs are generally accessible to the average home gardener, Herman says.

“People take ideas home. It’s not a show where the gardens are so huge, over the top and they’re fabulous to look at, but they’re irrelevant to your own little plot of earth. People can really look at some of the things [at the

festival] and say, ‘Oh, that’s quite cool.

I could do that in my backyard.’”

The four-day festival includes a garden party, a seniors’ tea, a family fun night and a speaker series that features some of the top names in the Canadian gardening world – check the website for more details.

In Byron, Forrat’s Chocolates and Lounge has been offering the area’s best selling vintages for five years, according to chocolatier and owner Marc Forrat. “We don’t really do pairings. We offer a low-key wine bar and high-end, quality chocolate” at the lounge.

With sofas, a fireplace and a casual atmosphere, enjoying favourite wines and chocolates is a cozy experience for lovers or friends during the winter months.

Cherryhill Village Mall (near Metro). The original location has been a fixture at Covent Garden Market for 12 years.

Hamiltonians have been able to get their fill of sweet love at Forrat’s on Locke for six years.

Originally from Brazil, Forrat met his wife Elia when he was living in France and she was there as a Western University exchange student.

He’s lived in and grown his chocolate empire in the Forest City since.

Forrat is supplying two special chocolates for the London Wine Bar, where you are also able to enjoy favourite vintages and nibble on milk and dark chocolate treats.

This downtown dining venue’s

cozy atmosphere is entirely intentional, according to co-owner Mario Jozic. “We aren’t wine snobs,” he explains, “because we want to serve really good wine in a cozy relaxed setting where people can wear what they like and enjoy good food and wine with friends.”

Partners in life since they met in religion class at Catholic Central High School, he and Laura Del Maestro have travelled the world to gain the knowledge they bring to the kitchen and the bar.

The two offerings available only at this location are a slightly salty milk chocolate with small chunks of dried fruit in it – called Tropical Sea Salt

“I really think these go well with wine,” Forrat explains, “and that’s how I came up with those particular flavours.”

Changes in density or texture may mean a new cut is in order. “Shortening your hair length and adding soft layers will give your hair more fullness,” she adds.

T

he austere beauty of Lake Huron’s glacier-like shores and sparkling ice-covered trees make a perfect road trip to relieve a long winter’s cabin fever. And when the sun has set in spectacular fashion over the lake, stop into Grog’s for one of their famous pizzas, invites owner Veronica Brennan.

This popular summer stop-off is just as much fun in the winter. It has its own access point to the area’s popular snowmobile trail, which was created by Brennan in 2013. “We’re very popular with snowmobilers who want to stop and warm up,” she says.

In the summer, when the population of Grand Bend and Port Franks triples,

Grog’s is a great place to enjoy a meal in the sunshine. The patio was added in 2007 and a second one is planned for next year.

Grog’s friendly, quaint atmosphere has been enhanced over the years as renovations and additions have been made, but Brennan feels that her dedicated staff members and the excellent service they offer is a key ingredient to the restaurant’s success. “We have 55 to 65 staff members, depending on the season, and many are teens from around the area. We want to give them work experience and they bring a sense of vitality.”

Zaney Bread, a crowd favourite on the menu, was developed by the restaur-

ant’s first server. The cheese-stuffed dish is even named in her honour, according to Brennan.

Fresh, local ingredients are used as much as possible. Grog’s also offers local cider from nearby Twin Pines Orchards as well as a full array of beer brands on tap.

Brennan feels that it’s important to give back to the community. She supports an array of local sports teams, as well as an annual golf tournament that has raised $21,000 over four years for cancer research. b
