editor’s note BUILDING ORIGINAL HOMES FOR ORIGINAL PEOPLE We’ll make your next home as original as you are Why settle for a run-of-the-mill custom home when you can have an entirely original one? With a planning process that starts with nothing more than your dreams and a blank sheet of paper, you can be sure your Riverstone Original Home will be every bit as unique and remarkable as you are. We’ve been building original homes for well over 20 years now, and each one has been entirely different than the one before it. And that’s exactly how it should be.

Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face. – Victor Hugo

I

wish you a healthy new year! Greeting those we meet in Jan uary each year – whether it’s the grocery clerk or a close friend – with a wish for a happy new year is traditional, and I do wish you all a happy new year. But, I’ve come to realize that it’s difficult to be truly hap py if one isn’t healthy as well. In this vein, we’ve introduced a health story as a recurring feature in each issue of Lifestyle Magazine. Meeting new and interesting people, learning their stories and translating that information into an interesting read is what I love about writing. This issue’s health story is one of those situa tions. Driving out of the city through the verdant countryside that surrounds London on a bright, sunny day to meet new equine friends and the dedicated professionals who work with them definitely made it an ‘I love my job day.’ The best part, though, was learning about an emerging trend in mental wellness, called equine assisted therapy and equine assisted learning. Helping others overcome personal obstacles while traversing an obstacle course is an everyday exercise to these folks

but the importance of this work can’t be under rated. In our increasingly techdependent, stressedout lives, this type of new approach can have a meaningful impact on families, couples, work teams and individuals. I hope you enjoy the story on page 51. We have many stories in this issue that will help those wrestling with renovation ideas, seeking fashion finds and experiencing decorating dilemmas. So sit back and take some downtime to relax, read and enjoy. The entire Lifestyle Magazine team wishes you health and happiness for 2017!

Bungalow blossoms Childhood home gets modern update

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

W

This midcentury bungalow was revamped to be a contemporary, open-concept living space for homeowner Kevin Brunton. Covenant Construction’s Bonnie Hardy helped Brunton furnish and accessorize his house to make the most of its new features, creating a relaxed and welcoming ambiance. 10 Lifestyle January/February 2017

hen friends come into Kevin Brunton’s southeast London bungalow today, they can’t believe it’s the same house where he grew up and they spent time as kids. The ‘60s-era home has become a 21st-century showcase, thanks to a major overhaul by Covenant Construction, spearheaded by Craig and Bonnie Hardy. “It’s a whole new house,” Brunton says. “It feels so much more spacious.” And it perfectly reflects his tastes and personality. In the original home a doorway from the garage led to a narrow galley kitchen and stairs to the basement. A full wall separated the kitchen from a front living room. This entire area was gutted to create a wide-open living space.

The kitchen is anchored by a large island. Granite counters are complemented by a glass-and-slate backsplash, while stainless steel appliances and light grey custom cabinets, constructed by Inspired Woodworks, a sister company to Covenant, complete the updated ambiance. The focal point of the adjacent living room is a floor-to-ceiling porcelain tile fireplace with media centre. The basement stairway from the garage was removed and a new extra-wide staircase constructed from the foyer. Two of three main-floor bedrooms were combined to create a master suite and space taken from one of those was used to accommodate the stairway. Vinyl plank flooring, resembling hardwood, was installed throughout

this area, blending with the wood in the island base and the matching trim on the staircase and in cabinets bracketing the fireplace. In the lower level, Covenant constructed an ultimate man cave for Brunton. He envisioned this space as a gathering place for friends. Its central feature is a bar including a two-tier counter with seating, ledge stone cladding and shelving fabricated with industrial pipe. The industrial pipe feature was replicated, on a Continued on page 12

An earthy palette and natural finishes – like stone and wood – give this area a decidedly masculine feel. larger scale, to create additional shelving for a recreation room entertainment centre. This level also includes a bathroom, expanded to include a shower, and a large home office/den, space created by moving the furnace and air conditioning units to a central closet beneath the stairway. Covenant also played a role in creating the décor, as co-owner Bonnie Hardy helped source new custom furnishings as well as artwork, including pieces to match Brunton’s framed sports jerseys mounted on the basement walls. “It’s great that we can supply a full range of services, from design to décor,” Hardy says. “I really enjoyed working with Kevin on those aspects.” Brunton says the project turned out even better than he expected and he wouldn’t change a thing. n

Seeing new and innovative products on sale, meeting professional builders and renovators in person, learning about services from the people who provide them, benefitting from show specials – these are some of the myriad benefits that keep attendees returning to the London Home Builders’ Lifestyle Home Show year after year.

Now is the time LIFESTYLE HOME SHOW offers much to those ready to make changes at home

Presented by the LHBA, and 2017 show sponsor Rembrandt Homes, it is marking its twenty-fourth year. “The Lifestyle Home Show started as the industry’s opportunity to bring forward the latest and greatest in residential construction and professional renovation, from innovative technologies to building science. Over the decades it has grown into a showcase for all local business. In keeping with LHBA’s mission statement to give back, it also affords us a venue to raise public awareness for community organizations. Last year we designed smaller displays specifically to support new businesses. The show is an integral part of the LHBA and its members.” – Lois Langdon, LHBA Executive Officer

For Dennis Beker and John King, partners is London’s Gliding Shelf Solutions dealership, the Lifestyle Home Show is one of their most effective forms of advertising. “Leads are a big advantage,” Beker says. “We find it very worthwhile, based both on leads and on the orders we get out of it.” They’ve exhibited at the show every year since launching their business four years ago this April.

Gliding Shelf Solutions is an Ontario-based company that builds and installs custom shelves to glide in and out of existing cabinets. The product is made-in-Canada and Beker notes that the turn-around time from a free consultation and price quote to installation is typically three weeks. While seeing the shelves at the show can elicit a “wow” reaction from some, Beker says many customers come in already aware of the product and seeking a solution for a problem cupboard. Whatever the case, he says the shelving sells itself. “People understand the product easily. We don’t have to explain it or tell them why it’s a good idea. They get it.” b

Covenant Construction Something a bit different will be happening this year at Covenant Construction’s Lifestyle Home Show booth “We will be actually creating 3D drawings at the show,” says Bonnie Hardy, who operates Covenant Construction with her husband, Craig. The company will run a contest leading up to the show, inviting consumers to submit renovation and kitchen layouts and fortunate show goers may take away 3D renditions of their projects.

“We always put a lot of effort into our Home Show booths and this year will be no exception,” Hardy promises. “We’ve been doing the show for more than 15 years and we find it’s a great opportunity to talk to people about their homes and projects.” Covenant has been assisting London and area residents with building and renovation projects for more than two decades, always committed to leading in innovation from green building to creative design. In 2011, it expanded its services, launching Inspired Woodworks to design and build its own cabinetry. Samples of their custom cabinetry will also be featured at the show booth. b

Homecastle Windows and Doors New showroom the big news for booth at this year’s show For more than a quarter century, Homecastle Windows and Doors has been bringing its personal touch and quality workmanship to the London region, building its business on referrals and repeat customers. “We see a lot of people there and reminding folks that we’re still around is important, I think,” he says. This year the company will be touting an exciting result of its business growth — a brand new and expanded showroom at its First Street location. Homecastle provides a wide range of window and door products, including vinyl and wood windows and entrance, garden and patio doors, as well as vinyl siding in a variety of textures and profiles. It also specializes in renovations. Consistency, through the use of long-established suppliers of Canadian-made products, and superior workmanship, by installers who are full-time employees and thus take pride in their work, are two important earmarks of Homecastle’s continued success, Versteegh believes. b

Okewood Timberworks Displaying hands-on expertise at home show key to success

After a first successful year at the Lifestyle Home Show, Alex Oke, owner of Okewood Timberworks, is enthusiastic about returning. “We got a good turnout and a great response, quite a few jobs and a lot of interest,” Oke says. And the bonus was winning the “best feature display” award. “That was very rewarding.”

He will be demonstrating his art of creating handcrafted structures. Unlike many timber-framing companies, which use computer-controlled machinery, Oke fashions each piece by hand and uses traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon connections and oak pegs. At the booth, Oke will have demonstration timbers, allowing consumers to see and feel first-hand how his works come together. He will also have a variety of smaller items, such as live-edge tables and cutting boards, for purchase. There will be a large timber-frame structure, also for sale – last year it was a cabana – illustrating the scope of Okewood Timberworks’ repertoire. The company undertakes a wide range of projects, not only full custom homes, but also front entranceways, covered porches, patios and interior accents. b

CCR Building and Remodeling Nearly quarter of a century of success on display this year

CCR has been participating at the Lifestyle Home Show since its inception some 24 years ago. And it has been an ideal venue for connecting with clients and industry partners over the years, says Peder Madsen, co-owner of CCR Building and Remodeling with his father, Arne. During that time the company has grown from a custom cabinetry and carpentry business, launched in 1989, to today’s full-scale renovation contractor with a wide-ranging portfolio of new builds and renovation work in all aspects of design and construction.

From kitchens and bathrooms to basements, additions and whole-home makeovers, there is no challenge too daunting for the CCR team, Madsen says. As well, the company has developed a growing interest in sustainable building, always looking for “greener” solutions. Promoting these strengths at the annual home show has resulted in recognition and work, Madsen says. “We do grow our business with new project opportunities,” he says. “And, as well, it’s always awesome to see past clients, who come by to check things out and to get great new ideas.” b January/February 2017

Beachcomber Hot Tubs All you need for backyard enjoyment on display at home show

Visitors to the Beachcomber Hot Tubs booth at the Lifestyle Home Show will notice some new items on display this year. That’s because the business is promoting its new and larger Wharn cliffe Road location, where they’re able to show more products, including barbecues, smokers, gazebos and pool accessories, says dealership owner Jeff McColl.

“We’ve been able to broaden what we do and have more product available than in the smaller space,” he says. “Hot tubs are our focus, but we’re showing more gazebos. While we’ve sold barbecues for a while, we’ve gotten more into smokers and that sort of thing. We’ll have some of those at the show.” McColl and new business partner Jeremy Slemko will also be promot ing their service component. “It’s a big part of what we do. We service all brands of tubs and also pools and saunas.” The dealership has participated in the show for the past two decades. McColl says he finds value in the op portunity to meet potential customers and to let them see and experience the products firsthand. b

Product longevity key for long-time show exhibitor

“A big part of our business is solid surface quartz and porcelain countertops,” says Deborah Clemens, general manager. “People don’t always realize that, so we are putting that message out there.”

Offering three generations of inspiring bath & kitchen products

To highlight this company will be promoting a diverse range of countertops at this year’s Lifestyle Home Show. The family-owned business was launched in 1969 with its own manufactured synthetic marble bathroom fixtures. But, Clemens says, it has always been ahead of the curve as new products were introduced, from early solid surface counters to quartz and, most recently, its porcelain Neolith. “That’s been a real source of success for our business,” she says. Those will be front and centre at their booth. But the show, which Coni-Marble has been involved with since its beginning, is also an opportunity to touch base with loyal customers, Clemens says. “It’s a pleasure for us to be at the show every year because we get a lot of customers who come by to tell us they’ve been using our products for a long time.” b

Prestige Kitchen and Bath Focused on designing and installing kitchens since 1990

Exhibiting at the Lifestyle Home Show last year was so successful for Prestige Kitchen and Bath of London that owner Doug Grieve is going for a larger presence this year, doubling the size of his booth. “The show was well worthwhile,” he says. Grieve launched his renovation business just two years ago, but he’s no stranger to renovation work, with 35 years in construction under his tool belt.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are a specialty for Grieve, who is hands-on with every project, along with all professional sub trades in place. He started working on kitchen renovations more than two decades ago as an installer. Then he managed kitchen companies for the past 10 years, before branching out on his own. Design is a particular focus. “Anyone can throw a cabinet together but it has to work in the room,” he says. “I’ve been focused on kitchens since 1990. That many years of design and concentration counts.” He looks forward to sharing his background and expertise with consumers at the show. b

St. Thomas builder says you can get more for your money

Londoners can get more for their money by building a new home in St. Thomas. This is the message Hayhoe Homes will bring to the Lifestyle Home Show as a first-time exhibitor. “It’s a quick commute from St. Thomas for London workers and housing prices here are better, lot prices are more reasonable and you can get many more features, more

house for your money,” says Shale Holden, design and marketing assistant with Hayhoe. A local builder for more than three decades, focused on creating a reputation for quality craftsmanship and design, Hayhoe is now developing communities in St. Thomas and Tillsonburg. The company’s exhibit will shine a spotlight on a new building phase in its St. Thomas Orchard Park South neighbourhood, launching this spring with a presentation centre opening in February. “There are some really nice lots that back onto a walking trail and with mature trees,” Holden says. “It will definitely be a point of conversation at the show.” In addition to detached homes, the new phase will include townhomes and a condominium site. b

Heritage Stair and Railing Company’s design and execution prowess on display at home show

For Heritage Stair and Railing, participation in the Lifestyle Home Show has been an effective avenue to get the company name out in the marketplace. “We get exposure,” says company owner David Brown. “And we get calls, (with regard to) a new home being built and quite a bit of renovation work.”

Since its beginnings in 2004, the company, with an experienced team of employees, has built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship in its custommade staircases and railing, as well as for providing outstanding customer service. The business is thriving, serving a clientele throughout the Windsor and London regions, Brown says. Heritage Stair and Railing offers its products in a wide range of wood types, including oak, maple, pine, mahogany, and more. Oak and maple are the big sellers, but, as trends change on a regular basis, there is often demand for less common varieties, like hickory or white oak, he says. Brown will be on hand to talk about those trends at the show. The booth will also feature a full sample staircase to showcase the company’s workmanship. b

Sloan Stone Design

Duo Building

What’s hot and what’s not – trends on point at home show

Home show providing client contact for nearly four decades

Business exposure, new customers and growing sales are three reasons Sloan Stone Design is going into its seventh year at the Lifestyle Home Show. “Being in the home show has increased our sales and enabled us to get our name out into the public more,” says Derek Sloan. “We find our show presence is drawing retail customers into our showroom.”

Making a direct, face-to-face connection with the public is a major benefit of the Lifestyle Home Show, says Pat Malloy, owner of Duo Building Ltd. It’s a big reason why the company has had a presence there every year since it started. “It gives us a real opportunity to connect with clients, so they can put a face to the company and have the opportunity to talk to a professional and ask questions,” he says. “I think of it as a living advertisement that allows us to connect with people on a personal level. The show is a very good place, from that consumer standpoint, to meet contractors in a relaxed setting.”

Derek Sloan

The company, launched in 2010, designs, manufactures and installs granite and quartz countertops for new build and renovation projects. Sloan’s clients include builders, kitchen and bath dealers, as well as the general public. Another advantage of participating in the show, Sloan says, is discovering what’s new in the marketplace. “We’re seeing different styles and colour trends. We are helping people be more creative with those,” Sloan says. Office manager Vanessa Cabral notes that with sleek and modern styling in vogue, white quartz continues to be popular. But a new look expected to draw appeal this year showcases a quartz product that, while maintaining its non-porous and maintenance-free properties, has a veining pattern that resembles marble. b

For the past 38 years, Duo Building has been part of the London building community, specializing in residential and commercial renovations. In the past year, the company has expanded to building custom homes. This will be promoted at the show. “It’s a true custom-build business, working with the client to take the project from planning stages to completion in one stop,” Malloy says. b

Lormac Renovation Centre Contemporary takes on home renovation on display The Lifestyle Home Show is the ideal antidote for the winter blues and gets people thinking about home improvements that come with springtime, says Kathie Wolak, president at Lormac Renovation Centre.

“It’s a great show. People look forward to seeing all the great stuff out there and they start thinking about spring and doing things to beautify their homes.” The exterior renovation company specializes in windows, doors, siding, soffit, fascia, eaves troughs and gutter guards. Wolak is excited about showing off new offerings, including a modern version of the traditional patio door, window hardware and finishes and a new style of replacement doors in 39 colour choices. She’s equally enthusiastic about reconnecting with past clients and meeting new ones “to join our more than 35,000 satisfied customers.” “Our customers are the heart of our business,” she says. “They trust us to provide the best of the best, in both product and certified installation.” Lormac offers a lifetime warranty, non-pro-rated and transferrable, on its workmanship and product. “It’s the strongest warranty in our industry,” Wolak says. b January/February 2017

Inner beauty

Expansive rear windows let in light and allow the beauty of the landscape surrounding this home to become one of its natural features. Opening up the space for better flow and accessibility make it a truly familyfriendly house.

he setting was perfect. The home had a large backyard, with a garden, and backed onto an environmentallysensitive area, with a pond and walking trails, protected from future development. Inside the house was another story. Angled walls, casement windows, arched doorways and transoms created a distinctly colonial ambiance. “We wanted an updated look, something more classic and timeless, says homeowner Shirley. They turned to CCR Building and Remodeling to help create that and Shirley says they couldn’t be more pleased with the result. The space was opened by squaring off the angled walls and arches, creating cleaner lines and by removing a wall between the kitchen and living area, according to Arne Madsen, CCR co-owner, who spearheaded the project. A large island now separates those areas. Casement windows bracketing the rear fireplace were replaced with full-length clear glass that follows the lines

of the vaulted ceiling. Complemented by expansive rear windows in the kitchen, the family now has unimpeded views of surrounding nature. A master suite, running along one side of the home, was also given a major overhaul. The front bedroom and rear ensuite bathroom were switched so the bedroom now has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the backyard and natural area. Moving the bathroom to the front

allowed it to be expanded and the large glassed-in shower, free-standing tub, double basin vanity and heated floors have created a spa-like atmosphere, Shirley says. The bedroom and bath are joined by a hallway lined with walk-in closets on one side and built-in cabinetry with drawers along the other. Other modifications enhanced the simplified aura, including changing some vibrant wall colours to a more serene grey complemented with white trim. The front entrance now features an eight-foot wooden door with frosted glass side panels. Between the foyer and front dining area and the kitchen/living room, a stairway to the lower level was also updated with a new wooden railing and the stairway itself was refinished to match new hickory flooring. The front garage formerly accessed a laundry area, bathroom and pantry. This area was reworked to include a separate laundry room, plus a convenient mudroom and an enlarged three-piece bathroom with tub. The makeover of this area also allowed the pantry to be Continued on page 34 January/February 2017

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Home builders and renovators in St. Thomas and Elgin County basked in the golden glow of success as the St. Thomas Elgin Home Builders’ Association presented its annual Golden Hammer Awards at a gala dinner in November 2016. The awards are a recognition of the quality of work by the area’s builders and renovators, according to STEHBA president Peter De Boer. “These awards tell clients that the company strives for excellence and achieves quality as an awardwinning builder,” De Boer says. Chairperson for the awards event Angela DeVries, agrees, “The creative community and home design, quality construction and exemplary customer service that the awards acknowledge is a benefit to our local consumers, a value to be held in high regard.” The Golden Hammer Awards are decided as a blind judging by peers – this year a diverse cross section of builders, designers and lay people – so they are also a validation for recipients of their success in meeting their own goals and objectives, De Boer adds. n 36 Lifestyle January/February 2017

Casey’s Creative Kitchens is celebrating back-to-back honours from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Brianne Hughes was selected as a NKBA Top 30 Under 30 award recipient. Hughes’s colleague Benjamin Ouellette was a winner last year. It is a prestigious tribute as the NKBA has 60,000 North American members. “I was very excited and very thrilled to have been selected,” says Hughes, who received the nod in her first application, noting all of her efforts are about putting customers first. “My drive for design, how you connect with clients and how you build relationships with clients got me to where I am.” Hughes heads to Orlando the second week of January for the NKBA Industry Show, where she’ll do a presentation, network and experience new development opportunities. Hughes, 28, also won a 2016 North American Elite Design Award, which had a record number of submissions at 261, for a kitchen design. n

Time Traveler Come home to a plush, peaCeful setting By Kathy Rumleski

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT With 7,000 square feet of living space positioned on 17 acres of property, grand is the watchword for Townsend Manor. • A bucolic setting, with a wooded area and ponds, provides the ideal background for this country home. • The kitchen is a light, bright space adjacent to the solarium-like conservatory. The main floor’s public rooms – kitchen, dining and family rooms, den, rec room, conservatory and office – flow from one to another. • One of the property’s outdoor features is a large pool that can be enjoyed from inside as well, since the home’s large windows overlook it and much of the other yard space. • This includes a patio area with built-in seating to host the many guests that will want to visit Townsend Manor’s new owners. 38 Lifestyle January/February 2017

t Townsend Manor, the beauty of this majestic country estate follows visitors inside as they enter the 7,000-square-foot stately home. The 17-acre manicured property is located a 30-minute drive west of London on Townsend Line, close to Strathroy and Sarnia. Large windows throughout the home allow easy viewing of the ponds, forested area, evergreen-lined drive and heated swimming pool. Nowhere is nature more evident indoors than in the conservatory with its wrap-around windows. Wall-to-wall windows in the solarium-style conservatory showcase the 40-foot pool and patio, highlighting the natural beauty surrounding the home. Walking into that room with its hot tub will warm you up on a winter day and let

you dream of summertime fun. Townsend Manor is listed with Royal LePage Triland Realty’s John Crosby who calls the property an eclectic, contemporary home, with a country flavour. The asking price is $1,449,000. The conservatory is off the bright, spacious kitchen with ceramic tile, an island, track lighting and multiple cupboards that are easy to access. The kitchen flows naturally with the conservatory and the other rooms on the main level, including a family room, formal dining area, den, rec room and office. The third floor also has a 900-squarefoot recreation area, including a billiards table, sauna and full bathroom. There are nine bathrooms in total, including five ensuites, one off of each bedroom. The bedrooms have design elements capturing the homeowners’ travel experiences. One of the bedrooms has

beautiful tiles the owners brought from Greece that are incorporated in the ensuite in that room. The master bedroom continues the penchant for large windows, in this case, overlooking the ponds. Its closet spans the room and is 30 feet long. The ponds are laid out like flower petals and are balanced so that if the water level gets too high in one, it automatically drains into the other. Continuing outside, there is a large barn on the property, with a workshop, heated area, equipment room, six stalls and a full upper loft. When the weather turns warmer, there are plenty of settings to relax outdoors, including a closed-in gazebo, outdoor fireplace, picnic area and sitting area cantilevered over a ravine. “It’s a way to escape the urban grind, yet be close to (the city),” Crosby says. n

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY NOT EMM GRYNER’S THING By Jay Menard

T

hough her music has travelled the world – ranging from back ing up Bowie in Glastonbury to stints in Canadian metro polises like Toronto and Montreal – Emm Gryner is firmly rooted in the smalltown sensibility that comes from growing up in Forest, Ontario. Gryner said she credits the lack of distractions in a small community for helping her along her path. “I guess having the opportunity to not be distracted by too many things gave me a clear focus,” she said. “Really, there wasn’t much going on – just going to music lessons, TV, and the radio. You put those things together and you get this.”

Gryner’s musical tastes vary and her career has taken her through solo work to being part of a trio (Trent Severn) to a recent stint on the stage of the Grand Theatre as part of the Joni Mitchell production. While musical influences from Detroit and surrounding areas helped, she is quick to credit her music teachers Karin and Dave Williams, from North Lambton Secondary School in Forest. “They were great role models for me; they showed me you could make a liv ing teaching music or being a musician without having to do other things, and they opened up the classrooms to let our terrible bands play after school!”

Currently living in St. Mary’s, Ontario, Gryner doesn’t expect to trade in smalltown living in the near future. “I feel big cities are often for people who are looking for something,” Gryner said. “A lot of the things I’ve been looking for I feel I’ve found here. St. Mary’s very much reminds me of Forest. You feel that 14year old’s mentality where you can dream anything and make it happen. A lot of people don’t see small towns that way, but I do.” b FOR MOR E INFOR MATION www.emmgryner.com

By Beth Stewart January heralds a new beginning for orchestra music in London as #WePlayOn (formerly Orchestra London) rebrands with a new name and direction. On January 20, the tenacious group will perform Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 as well as other pieces at Metropolitan United Church, under the baton of conductor Kevin Mallon. Dvorak’s popular arrangement, affectionately known as New World Symphony, is an appropriate introduction to the orchestra’s future. Written in the 1890s while Dvorak lived and worked in North America, it embodies the Czech composer’s sense of wonder at his new environment and draws heavily from his exposure to African-American music. It echoes the orchestra’s uplifting rise from the ashes of 80-year-old Orchestra London, which declared bankruptcy in 2014. Project manager Patricia McKinna says, “The musicians have been the ones to carry this forward.” She emphasizes that “maintaining musical standards is a given.” The plan is to start small and build momentum. #WePlayOn plans two additional spring concerts and another three in the fall. Loosen the strings in February with altered chords and improvisation during the 27th Annual Firehall Reunion. The event takes place February 18 at the London Music Hall. Local stars Cheryl Lescom and Tim Woodcock headline along with national and international guests such as Chuck Jackson (of Downchild Blues Band) playing with the Hogtown Allstars, Paul DesLauriers Band, and Chris Gill from Mississippi. Brian Mortimer, the man behind it all, expects upwards of 800 people from all over Canada to attend the reunion and says the VIP tables-for-10 sell out every year. Mortimer, who ran the bar between 1979 and 1990, recalls The Firehall as a place of inclusion and credits the quality of the musicians and the staff for its popularity. n

Little sweeties Tiny morsels pack a powerful punch

S

ugar has fallen out of favour and nearly everyone you know is going gluten-free or has become a vegetarian. So what is a person to do when hit by the craving for something sweet? Three area bakeries have the perfect answer: help yourself to one of their small, sweet treats made from natural ingredients. Delicate flavours enhance beautifully crafted morsels that are made daily to be consumed while fresh and delicious; this is the best way to satisfy a craving for something sweet, according to Kate St. Laurent. A fine artist turned baker, St. Laurent combined her love of colour and form with an appreciation of fine food and opened Bake Shop Studio in St. Thomas in the spring of last year. She specializes in gum paste flowers that look so lifelike they are often mistaken for the real thing and embody the notion that ‘we eat with our eyes first.’ Embracing the growing popularity of the buy-local movement, St. Laurent uses flour produced at the Arva Flour Mill, flavours her cakes with lavender and chamomile tea from Wild Flower Farms – which also produces the honey she uses for sweetening, as well as local maple syrup.

“I don’t use any additives or preservatives. When something is fresh and custom-made, having a little taste is all you need to satisfy your sweet tooth,” explains St. Laurent. Likewise, one of Petit Paris Creperie and Patisserie’s most popular offerings is French macarons. Owner Nicole Arroyos says, “Though they are made with sugar they are packed with flavour, so just eating one satisfies.” Offered in a great variety of flavours and colours, these sweet, colourful discs are growing in popularity as party favours and often substitute for wedding cakes. Because she knows that consumers are concerned, Arroyos is currently sourcing organic sugars from suppliers, looking for one able to supply in large enough quantities to meet demand, which is not an easy task. French macarons are also gaining popularity because they are gluten-free, another growing trend in the baked goods industry. Petit Paris offers a limited variety of its products in gluten-free versions. Continued on page 50

Sugar bliss cookies are made in creative shapes and painted with vibrantly coloured icing to add fun to all occasions and highlight special holidays.

Choosing a vegetarian lifestyle doesn’t prohibit one from having a sweet tooth, so Bake Shop Studio offers vegan options of its products. To meet the demand for the current cookie craze, Tracey Koivu opened sugar bliss cookies early last year. She believes that because her cookies are made from six basic ingredients – including organic sugar and Madagascar vanilla – and have no chemicals or preservatives, people feel comfortable indulging in an occasional treat. Her business has been driven, in part, by those that love the colourful custom cookies she produces to highlight special occasions (like baby showers) and holidays. Koivu also expresses her artistic bent by hand mixing colours to ‘paint’ her cookies. “They are miniature palettes,” she explains. Her love of pastel colours facilitated her Easter offerings and sparked a special creativity. She’s currently developing a gluten-free version of her cookie recipe, as well. The ultimate sweet tooth satisfaction comes in small, beautiful packages. n FOR MORE INFORMATION

Horses help healing

Thinking ouTside The Therapy box

W

By Jill Ellis-Worthington

hen Jackie Emmons needed a new perspective on life she turned to a horse, of course. The London woman “was going through a difficult time and knew there was something (she) would gain; horses are incredibly intuitive.” Emmons travelled to Monique Gerber’s Leading Edge

Equine Academy outside of Woodstock to work with Gerber through her equine assisted learning (EAL) programs. Having experienced other forms of therapy, Emmons sought alternative solutions. “I wanted to get direction in a way that didn’t require me to exhume old emotions again (like during talk therapy), I needed to gain clarity in a different way.” Continued on page 52 January/February 2017

Rebecca Brown (left) and Sue Hatherell have teamed up with Equine Assisted Therapy, near Arva, to offer families, couples and teams therapeutic learning opportunities through working with horses. EAT should not be confused with a riding program or lessons.

Gerber has been offering equine assisted learning for two years and recently built a large barn to enable her to offer programming year-round. She offers half and full day team-building programs that enable attendees to learn to work in concert through doing activities with horses. For example, Gerber calls one Push Me/Pull You, in which different length ropes are attached to the horse’s bridle and three participants (two human, one horse) negotiate an obstacle course. Rules require that the human participants not step over a wood rail barrier placed around the path, but the horse can, which often reveals who understands the challenge more thoroughly, explained Gerber. “It’s an exercise in cooperation and communication,” she said. “The horse is a full partner in the exercise and often shows clues to solve it, if the other two team members are able to pick up on them.” Gerber also works with therapists like Marcy Stocking, of Domestic Abuse Services Oxford, who brings her clients out to the farm for therapy sessions. “People who have been in abusive relationships often feel they aren’t capable. This can help them work through triggers and reinforce their problem-solving skills,” said Stocking. Social worker and equine therapist Rebecca Brown works with Gerber, and she has a separate equine-based

Chelsea Read works with one of the horses at Equine Assisted Therapy during an exercise that builds trust between human and equine participants. This experiential learning or therapy process allows participants to conquer fears, learn communication skills or experience growth in team building because it is a kinetic experience and people often learn or process better when doing than talking, according to Brown.

practice with Sue Hatherell called Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT), based just north of the city by Arva. Brown has been a therapist for 30 years and Hatherell is an equine specialist and coach who has been working with horses since she was eight years old. Both women, as well as Gerber, are certified by the Equine Growth and Assisted Living Association (EGALA). Brown explains that EAT is often mistaken for riding programs for disabled individuals or riding lessons. Neither EAL or EAT involve riding horses. “It’s experiential therapy or learning,” said Brown. “Because horses are fight or flight animals they easily pick up on energy and emotions; they are very instinctive.” She and Hatherell have worked with clients from age eight upwards and say that it’s helpful in many therapeutic situations. From team building to families dealing with relationship issues, equine therapy and learning can help “reveal communication breakdowns in relationships” and subsequently assist in improving cooperation and promote healing. n
