Greeting those we meet in Jan­ uary each year – whether it’s the grocery clerk or a close friend – with a wish for a happy new year is traditional, and I do wish you all a happy new year. But, I’ve come to realize that it’s difficult to be truly hap­ py if one isn’t healthy as well. In this vein, we’ve introduced a health story as a recurring feature in each issue of Lifestyle Magazine.

Meeting new and interesting people, learning their stories and translating that information into an interesting read is what I love about writing. This issue’s health story is one of those situa­ tions. Driving out of the city through the verdant countryside that surrounds London on a bright, sunny day to meet new equine friends and the dedicated professionals who work with them definitely made it an ‘I love my job day.’

The best part, though, was learning about an emerging trend in mental wellness, called equine assisted therapy and equine assisted learning. Helping others overcome personal obstacles while traversing an obstacle course is an everyday exercise to these folks

but the importance of this work can’t be under rated.

In our increasingly tech­dependent, stressed­out lives, this type of new approach can have a meaningful impact on families, couples, work teams and individuals. I hope you enjoy the story on page 51.

We have many stories in this issue that will help those wrestling with renovation ideas, seeking fashion finds and experiencing decorating dilemmas.

So sit back and take some downtime to relax, read and enjoy.

Bungalow blossoms Childhood home gets modern update

This midcentury bungalow was revamped to be a contemporary, open-concept living space for homeowner Kevin Brunton.

Covenant Construction’s Bonnie Hardy helped Brunton furnish and accessorize his house to make the most of its new features, creating a relaxed and welcoming ambiance.

hen friends come into Kevin Brunton’s southeast London bungalow today, they can’t believe it’s the same house where he grew up and they spent time as kids. The ‘60s-era home has become a 21st-century showcase, thanks to a major overhaul by Covenant Construction, spearheaded

by Craig and Bonnie Hardy.

“It’s a whole new house,” Brunton says. “It feels so much more spacious.”

And it perfectly reflects his tastes and personality.

In the original home a doorway from the garage led to a narrow galley kitchen and stairs to the basement.

A full wall separated the kitchen from a front living room. This entire area was gutted to create a wide-open living space.

The kitchen is anchored by a large island. Granite counters are complemented by a glass-and-slate backsplash, while stainless steel appliances and light grey custom cabinets, constructed

by Inspired Woodworks, a sister company to Covenant, complete the updated ambiance.

The focal point of the adjacent living room is a floor-to-ceiling porcelain tile fireplace with media centre.

The basement stairway from the garage was removed and a new extra-wide staircase constructed from the foyer. Two of three main-floor bedrooms were combined to create a master suite and space taken from one of those was used to accommodate the stairway.

Vinyl plank flooring, resembling hardwood, was installed throughout

this area, blending with the wood in the island base and the matching trim on the staircase and in cabinets bracketing the fireplace.

In the lower level, Covenant constructed an ultimate man cave for Brunton. He envisioned this space as a gathering place for friends. Its central feature is a bar including a two-tier counter with seating, ledge stone cladding and shelving fabricated with industrial pipe. This is a two-tiered structure with plenty of seating for guests to linger over drinks. An earthy palette and natural finishes – like stone and wood – give this area a decidedly masculine feel.

larger scale, to create additional shelving for a recreation room entertainment centre.

This level also includes a bathroom, expanded to include a shower, and a large home office/den, space created by moving the furnace and air conditioning units to a central closet beneath the stairway.

Covenant also played a role in creating the décor, as co-owner Bonnie Hardy helped source new custom furnishings as well as artwork, including pieces to match Brunton’s framed sports jerseys mounted on the basement walls.

“It’s great that we can supply a full range of services, from design to décor,” Hardy says. “I really enjoyed working with Kevin on those aspects.”

Brunton says the project turned out even better than he expected and he wouldn’t change a thing. n

For Dennis Beker and John King, partners is London’s Gliding Shelf Solutions dealership, the Lifestyle Home Show is one of their most effective forms of advertising.

“Leads are a big advantage,” Beker says. “We find it very worthwhile, based both on leads and on the orders we get out of it.”

They’ve exhibited at the show every year since launching their business four years ago this April.

Gliding Shelf Solutions is an Ontario-based company that builds and installs custom shelves to glide in and out of existing cabinets. The product is made-in-Canada and Beker notes that the turn-around time from a free consultation and price quote to installation is typically three weeks.

While seeing the shelves at the show can elicit a “wow” reaction from some, Beker says many customers come in already aware of the product and seeking a solution for a problem cupboard. Whatever the case, he says the shelving sells itself.

“People understand the product easily. We don’t have to explain it or tell them why it’s a good idea. They get it.” b

Covenant Construction Something a bit different will be happening this year at Covenant Construction’s Lifestyle Home Show booth “We will be actually creating 3D drawings at the show,” says Bonnie Hardy, who operates Covenant Construction with her husband, Craig. The company will run a contest leading up to the show, inviting consumers to submit renovation and kitchen layouts and fortunate show goers may take away 3D renditions of their projects.

“We always put a lot of effort into our Home Show booths and this year will be no exception,” Hardy promises. “We’ve been doing the show for more than 15 years and we find it’s a great opportunity to talk to people about their homes and projects.”

Covenant has been assisting London and area residents with building and renovation projects for more than two decades, always committed to leading in innovation from green building to creative design.

In 2011, it expanded its services, launching Inspired Woodworks to design and build its own cabinetry.

Okewood Timberworks Displaying hands-on expertise at home show key to success

After a first successful year at the Lifestyle Home Show, Alex Oke, owner of Okewood Timberworks, is enthusiastic about returning.

“We got a good turnout and a great response, quite a few jobs and a lot of interest,” Oke says.

And the bonus was winning the “best feature display” award. “That was very rewarding.”

He will be demonstrating his art of creating handcrafted structures.

Unlike many timber-framing companies, which use computer-controlled machinery, Oke fashions each piece by hand and uses traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon connections and oak pegs.

At the booth, Oke will have demonstration timbers, allowing consumers to see and feel first-hand how his works come together.

He will also have a variety of smaller items, such as live-edge tables and cutting boards, for purchase. There will be a large timber-frame structure, also for sale – last year it was a cabana – illustrating the scope of Okewood Timberworks’ repertoire.

CCR Building and Remodeling Nearly quarter of a century of success on display this year

CCR has been participating at the Lifestyle Home Show since its inception some 24 years ago. And it has been an ideal venue for connecting with clients and industry partners over the years, says Peder Madsen, co-owner of CCR Building and Remodeling with his father, Arne.

During that time the company has grown from a custom cabinetry and carpentry business, launched in 1989, to today’s full-scale renovation contractor with a wide-ranging portfolio of new builds and renovation work in all aspects of design and construction.

From kitchens and bathrooms to basements, additions and whole-home makeovers, there is no challenge too daunting for the CCR team, Madsen says. As well, the company has developed a growing interest in sustainable building, always looking for “greener” solutions.

Promoting these strengths at the annual home show has resulted in recognition and work, Madsen says.

“We’ve been able to broaden what we do and have more product available than in the smaller space,” he says.

“Hot tubs are our focus, but we’re showing more gazebos. While we’ve sold barbecues for a while, we’ve gotten more into smokers and that sort of thing. We’ll have some of those at the show.”

McColl and new business partner Jeremy Slemko will also be promot­ ing their service component. “It’s a big part of what we do. We service all brands of tubs and also pools and saunas.”

The dealership has participated in the show for the past two decades.

McColl says he finds value in the op­ portunity to meet potential customers and to let them see and experience the products first­hand. b

Business exposure, new customers and growing sales are three reasons Sloan Stone Design is going into its seventh year at the Lifestyle Home Show.

“Being in the home show has increased our sales and enabled us to get our name out into the public more,” says Derek Sloan. “We find our show presence is drawing retail customers into our showroom.”

Making a direct, face-to-face connection with the public is a major benefit of the Lifestyle Home Show, says Pat Malloy, owner of Duo Building Ltd. It’s a big reason why the company has had a presence there every year since it started.

“It gives us a real opportunity to connect with clients, so they can put a face to the company and have the opportunity to talk to a professional and ask questions,” he says. “I think of it as a living advertisement that allows us to connect with people on a personal level. The show is a very good place, from that consumer standpoint, to meet contractors in a relaxed setting.”

Sloan’s clients include builders, kitchen and bath dealers, as well as the general public.

“We’re seeing different styles and colour trends. We are helping people be more creative with those,” Sloan says.

Office manager Vanessa Cabral notes that with sleek and modern styling in vogue, white quartz continues to be popular. But a new look expected to draw appeal this year showcases a quartz product that, while maintaining its non-porous and maintenance-free properties, has a veining pattern that resembles marble. b

“It’s a great show. People look forward to seeing all the great stuff out there and they start thinking about spring and doing things to beautify their homes.”

he setting was perfect. The home had a large backyard, with a garden, and backed onto an environmentallysensitive area, with a pond and walking trails, protected from future development.

Inside the house was another story.

Angled walls, casement windows, arched doorways and transoms created a distinctly colonial ambiance. “We wanted an updated look, something more classic and timeless,� says homeowner Shirley.

They turned to CCR Building and Remodeling to help create that and Shirley says they couldn’t be more pleased with the result.

The space was opened by squaring off the angled walls and arches, creating cleaner lines and by removing a wall between the kitchen and living area, according to Arne Madsen, CCR co-owner, who spearheaded the project.

A master suite, running along one side of the home, was also given a major overhaul. The front bedroom and rear ensuite bathroom were switched so the bedroom now has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the backyard and natural area.

Moving the bathroom to the front

allowed it to be expanded and the large glassed-in shower, free-standing tub, double basin vanity and heated floors have created a spa-like atmosphere, Shirley says.

The bedroom and bath are joined by a hallway lined with walk-in closets on one side and built-in cabinetry with drawers along the other.

Other modifications enhanced the simplified aura, including changing some vibrant wall colours to a more serene grey complemented with white trim.

The front entrance now features an eight-foot wooden door with frosted glass side panels.

Between the foyer and front dining area and the kitchen/living room, a stairway to the lower level was also updated with a new wooden railing and the stairway itself was refinished to match new hickory flooring.

The front garage formerly accessed a laundry area, bathroom and pantry.

This area was reworked to include a separate laundry room, plus a convenient mudroom and an enlarged three-piece bathroom with tub. The makeover of this area also allowed the pantry to be Continued on page 34 January/February 2017

Casey’s Creative Kitchens is celebrating back-to-back honours from the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Brianne Hughes was selected as a NKBA Top 30 Under 30 award recipient. Hughes’s colleague Benjamin Ouellette was a winner last year. It is a prestigious tribute as the NKBA has 60,000 North American members.

“I was very excited and very thrilled to have been selected,” says Hughes, who received the nod in her first application, noting all of her efforts are about putting customers first.

“My drive for design, how you connect with clients and how you build relationships with clients got me to where I am.”

Hughes heads to Orlando the second week of January for the NKBA Industry Show, where she’ll do a presentation, network and experience new development opportunities.

Hughes, 28, also won a 2016 North American Elite Design Award, which had a record number of submissions at 261, for a kitchen design. n

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY NOT EMM GRYNER’S THING

T

hough her music has travelled the world – ranging from back­ ing up Bowie in Glastonbury to stints in Canadian metro­ polises like Toronto and Montreal – Emm Gryner is firmly rooted in the small­town sensibility that comes from growing up in Forest, Ontario.

Gryner said she credits the lack of distractions in a small community for helping her along her path.

“I guess having the opportunity to not be distracted by too many things gave me a clear focus,” she said.

“Really, there wasn’t much going on – just going to music lessons, TV, and the radio. You put those things together and you get this.”

Gryner’s musical tastes vary and her career has taken her through solo work to being part of a trio (Trent Severn) to a recent stint on the stage of the Grand Theatre as part of the Joni Mitchell production. While musical influences from Detroit and surrounding areas helped, she is quick to credit her music teachers Karin and Dave Williams, from North Lambton Secondary School in Forest.

“They were great role models for me; they showed me you could make a liv­ ing teaching music or being a musician without having to do other things, and they opened up the classrooms to let our terrible bands play after school!”

Currently living in St. Mary’s, Ontario, Gryner doesn’t expect to trade in small­town living in the near future.

“I feel big cities are often for people who are looking for something,” Gryner said. “A lot of the things I’ve been looking for I feel I’ve found here. St. Mary’s very much reminds me of Forest. You feel that 14­year­ old’s mentality where you can dream anything and make it happen. A lot of people don’t see small towns that way, but I do.” b FOR MOR E INFOR MATION www.emmgryner.com

By Beth Stewart January heralds a new beginning for orchestra music in London as #WePlayOn (formerly Orchestra London) rebrands with a new name and direction. On January 20, the tenacious group will perform Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 as well as other pieces at Metropolitan United Church, under the baton of conductor Kevin Mallon.

Dvorak’s popular arrangement, affectionately known as New World Symphony, is an appropriate introduction to the orchestra’s future. Written in the 1890s while Dvorak lived and worked in North America, it embodies the Czech composer’s sense of wonder at his new environment and draws heavily from his exposure to African-American music. It echoes the orchestra’s uplifting rise from the ashes of 80-year-old Orchestra London, which declared bankruptcy in 2014.

Project manager Patricia McKinna says, “The musicians have been the ones to carry this forward.” She emphasizes that “maintaining musical standards is a given.”

The plan is to start small and build momentum. #WePlayOn plans two additional spring concerts and another three in the fall.

Loosen the strings in February with altered chords and improvisation during the 27th Annual Firehall Reunion.The event takes place February 18 at the London Music Hall. Local stars Cheryl Lescom and Tim Woodcock headline along with national and international guests such as Chuck Jackson (of Downchild Blues Band) playing with the Hogtown Allstars, Paul DesLauriers Band, and Chris Gill from Mississippi.

Brian Mortimer, the man behind it all, expects upwards of 800 people from all over Canada to attend the reunion and says the VIP tables-for-10 sell out every year.

Mortimer, who ran the bar between 1979 and 1990, recalls The Firehall as a place of inclusion and credits the quality of the musicians and the staff for its popularity. n

ugar has fallen out of favour and nearly everyone you know is going gluten-free or has become a vegetarian. So what is a person to do when hit by the craving for something sweet?

A fine artist turned baker, St. Laurent combined her love of colour and form with an appreciation of fine food and opened Bake Shop Studio in St. Thomas in the spring of last year. Embracing the growing popularity of the buy-local movement, St. Laurent uses flour produced at the Arva Flour Mill, flavours her cakes with lavender and chamomile tea from Wild Flower Farms – which also produces the honey she uses for sweetening, as well as local maple syrup.

Offered in a great variety of flavours and colours, these sweet, colourful discs are growing in popularity as party favours and often substitute for wedding cakes.

Because she knows that consumers are concerned, Arroyos is currently sourcing organic sugars from suppliers, looking for one able to supply in large enough quantities to meet demand, which is not an easy task.

French macarons are also gaining popularity because they are gluten-free, another growing trend in the baked goods industry. Petit Paris offers a limited variety of its products in gluten-free versions.

Gerber has been offering equine assisted learning for two years and recently built a large barn to enable her to offer programming year-round.

She offers half and full day team-building programs that enable attendees to learn to work in concert through doing activities with horses.

For example, Gerber calls one Push Me/Pull You, in which different length ropes are attached to the horse’s bridle and three participants (two human, one horse) negotiate an obstacle course. Rules require that the human participants not step over a wood rail barrier placed around the path, but the horse can, which often reveals who understands the challenge more thoroughly, explained Gerber.

“It’s an exercise in cooperation and communication,” she said. “The horse is a full partner in the exercise and often shows clues to solve it, if the other two team members are able to pick up on them.”

Gerber also works with therapists like Marcy Stocking, of Domestic Abuse Services Oxford, who brings her clients out to the farm for therapy sessions.

“People who have been in abusive relationships often feel they aren’t capable. This can help them work through triggers and reinforce their problem-solving skills,” said Stocking.

Social worker and equine therapist Rebecca Brown works with Gerber, and she has a separate equine-based

This experiential learning or therapy process allows participants to conquer fears, learn communication skills or experience growth in team building because it is a kinetic experience and people often learn or process better when doing than talking, according to Brown.

practice with Sue Hatherell called Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT), based just north of the city by Arva.

Brown has been a therapist for 30 years and Hatherell is an equine specialist and coach who has been working with horses since she was eight years old. Both women, as well as Gerber, are certified by the Equine Growth and Assisted Living Association (EGALA).

Brown explains that EAT is often mistaken for riding programs for disabled individuals or riding lessons. Neither EAL or EAT involve riding horses.

“It’s experiential therapy or learning,” said Brown. “Because horses are fight or flight animals they easily pick up on energy and emotions; they are very instinctive.”

She and Hatherell have worked with clients from age eight upwards and say that it’s helpful in many therapeutic situations.

From team building to families dealing with relationship issues, equine therapy and learning can help “reveal communication breakdowns in relationships” and subsequently assist in improving cooperation and promote healing. n
