EDITOR’S note

years

“Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people.” HELEN KELLER

I

first heard this quote many years ago during a meeting or conference when my oldest son was young. He is profoundly hearing impaired, so, though it was many years ago, the words stuck with me and resonated while writing the story on hearing loss in younger seniors (page 40). It brings up feelings about how we are all dealing with the larger issue of isolation now. Though we may be able to hear – with or without the use of amplification – as responsible people we are also separating from those outside our immediate households, though we may be acquiring more and more things, through shopping online. And now that winter has well and truly set in, our feelings of isolation may be magnified. In the world of publishing, we must work well ahead of deadlines, so it is early December at time of writing and the holidays are upon us. Christmas will be different – like everything this year – without the usual party season that accompanies this end-of-year bacchanalia. At present, London and surrounding area is in the Orange phase of Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework. If some holiday activities raise the diagnoses and hospitalization numbers and we move into Red then Grey levels and are locked down, are you going to go back to crafting/baking/organizing activities of our first lock down? I am not sure that I’m ready to go back to seeing friends only on Zoom, rather than being able to have socially distanced drinks around a campfire or chat over coffee while huddling under a blanket in the garage. But, if we must, at least we have the skills we’ve acquired: technical proficiency at setting up multi-player game night; etiquette that eliminates talking over each other during online

meet-ups; perfecting our business on the top/comfy on the bottom attire; making sure a mask and mini bottle of sanitizer is in the pocket of each of our coats or in each purse/bag; keeping more closely in touch with friends or family far away; calling folks you haven’t ‘seen’ online or heard from in a while to check on him/her. We have learned a lot as individuals and patience, I think, is one of those things. Not all the time, of course, but often, I overhear kind words instead of grumbling when I do venture out. We have also learned a lot as a community and getting serious about homelessness is one of those. This continuing societal issue has been magnified by the pandemic, so I was encouraged to learn of the City’s proposal to use heated construction trailers for night and day shelters. It may be a temporary solution but hopefully moves us toward a longer term one. Isolation, it seems to me, is as much a function of mindset as it is physical geography. Feeling the loneliness of isolation even in a crowd has long been talked of but now that even those of us who have never had that feeling before can appreciate the sad sting of involuntary sequestration. I send you all a virtual hug and a wish for happiness in 2021, as we move into a new year and leave 2020, with all its lessons good and bad, in the review mirror.

BUY BETTER

Supporting local enterprises helps local families and your family

T

By Clare Dear

he year no one wants to remember – 2020 – is now in the rearview mirror. Its global pandemic and the resulting economic devastation are being replaced by cautious optimism 2021 will be better. After all, it could not get much worse! Vaccines and new treatment measures give the world hope we may soon have a grip on the coronavirus. However, less certain is our ability to get a grip the economy and the impact the pandemic has had on businesses, especially local shops and services. Some have closed their doors forever; others have had to pivot their focus simply to survive. Their greatest hope to continue serving our community is support from local consumers. Lifestyle Magazine urges everyone to consider supporting local businesses and services when making purchasing decisions. To help you weigh the benefits of choosing local, here are some points to consider. Remember, when you invest in your local economy, you are not just helping local business owners – you are also helping yourself. You are making our city a better place to live in, with a rich character and a thriving economy.

CHECK OUT LOCAL OPTIONS

We are all familiar with the big-box outlets – we know their locations, their products, their weekly sales. It is also difficult to ignore the convenience of online shopping, which typically offers lower prices and a vast array of products. However, do you really know the products and services our locally owned shops offer? It is worth the time, especially now, to become informed on what is available locally. Resources you can use to see what is available in your neighbourhood include the websites of area business associations, which post lists of

12 Lifestyle January/February 2021

businesses. For example, the Hyde Park Business Association website (hydeparkbia.ca) includes 102 services, 88 retail outlets and 28 dining spots among its extensive listings. Many of these businesses have their own websites to help inform you on the items and services they offer.

OPT FOR LOCAL SHOPS AND SERVICES

When setting out to make a purchase, instead of making a beeline to the nearest big-box store, take time to notice the many shops along your route. Perhaps one of those retailers or service providers offers the same item, or a comparable alternative. Sometimes the price is comparable, perhaps even less expensive, but if the price is a bit higher, consider it your ‘investment’ in the local economy. By spending locally, you are helping those businesses strengthen the area’s economy.

CHOOSE LOCAL EATERIES

The lockdowns and social distancing restrictions prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year have hit restaurants and bars especially hard. Some of these businesses have been forced to close permanently, while others are hanging on by relying on take-out and delivery orders. You can help keep them afloat by ordering locally – and when it is safe to dine in, try to choose local eateries over the big chains.

STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE

When weighing purchasing decisions, remember the more local businesses prosper, the more new ones will open, making it even easier to continue shopping locally in the future. 

ONE FOR THE AGES HIGH-TECH MATERIALS BOOST TIMELESS RENOVATION By Clare Dear

T

his top-to-bottom restoration by Covenant Construction is a masterful blend of heritage aesthetic and modern materials to retain the classic look of this house located prominently in the heart of London’s Wortley Village. Covenant Construction is headed by owner Craig Hardy, his wife Bonnie and their business partner Randy McCulloch. Bonnie oversaw the design elements of this project, and the team set out to

20 Lifestyle January/February 2021

ensure the renovation of the house, built in 1908, continued to fit the Old South streetscape. “We wanted the house to look like it had always been there,” says Craig, who worked closely with the village and London’s heritage committee in planning and designing the changes the client was seeking. For example, a bump-out on the living room wall, which faces the street, was one of the items on the wish list, as well as adding and reconfiguring windows on that side of the house. 

ONE OF 10 RENOS ON THE LHBA PARADE OF RENOVATIONS. TO VIEW: WWW.FACEBOOK. COM/LONDONHOMEBUILDERSASSOCIATION

ABOVE Craig Hardy scoured the area for the right fireplace before finding this one that is a highlight of the living room in this true-toits-time renovation in an historic Old South neighbourhood.

TOP Combining modern

needs with an historic aesthetic is key in this type of renovation.

MIDDLE As in many homes, the island is a gathering place when the homeowners entertain.

The mudroom is a small addition to the house and shows off the exterior brick. Stairs to the basement were moved here from another area and built to modern building code. The owner calls the former very steep stairway a “death trap. Across from the basement stairs is a cabinet that the homeowners rescued from a family member's barn, where it had been kept for 50 years. It was rehabilitated in Covenant's millwork shop to provide storage and to act as a backdoor drop zone.

Creating storage is a luxury in historical Old South homes like this one, so Covenant installed a closet and drawers that stretch the entire length of one wall in the master bedroom.

22 Lifestyle January/February 2021

ABOVE A small bedroom adjacent to the master was converted to an ensuite, with a large walk-in shower and double-sink vanity. LEFT The conveniently located second-floor laundry room features extra storage in the bench seat. To further enhance the historic ambiance of the area, the upper cabinets have been enhanced with gables, so they appear to be original fitted cabinets.

Attention to detail was so acute, the masons cleaned and numbered each brick as it was removed. The bricks were then reused to fill spaces around the new window configuration, creating a look that is seamless to passersby. “It looks like it’s always been like this,” says Craig. The front porch has been totally redone, but you would not know it as you stroll past. Craig says PVCtype products by AZEK Decking were used. The company offers a heritage line that has the classic look and functionality of wood without the long-term maintenance the natural material requires. A focus of the interior rebuild was a

new fireplace and windows in the new bump-out, which originally had been a blank brick wall. Craig scoured everywhere to find a suitable unit before finding an 1880s casting in a Toronto scrap yard. It fit the space perfectly. Elmira Stove Works supplied a vintage-style gas insert. Craig acknowledges the bump-out area is his favourite feature of the entire project. The living room flows seamlessly into a white, open-concept kitchen, highlighted by an island that is typically the gathering spot when the homeowners are entertaining. A main-floor powder room has been added where the stairwell to the

basement used to be. On the upper level there’s an outdoor deck with a hot tub. Other upgrades on the second floor include a laundry area, with black and white penny-tile flooring, and a spare bathroom finished with subway tile. In the master bedroom, a full-width set of built-in drawers was added, while an adjacent bedroom was converted into an ensuite bathroom. All the cabinetry was made at Covenant’s own millwork shop. If you are contemplating a similar heritage restoration and wondering about a budget, Craig says “it’s amazing how fast you can go through $100-200,000.” n

THE ANTIDOTE TO ANGST By Janis Wallace

CALMING colour of the year Picture boats bobbing on a sun-kissed sea and clouds scudding across the sky above. Simple serenity – exactly the feel Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Teal evokes. The 2021 Colour of the Year was chosen before the world turned upside down, but its soothing blue-green is an antidote to angst. 24 Lifestyle January/February 2021

BENJAMIN MOORE'S 2021 COLOUR OF THE YEAR

Aegean Teal, the Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year for 2021, provides a comforting backdrop for cooking and crafting in the kitchen. 

Blue-green is a calming colour that people tend to love. It works with many others. You’re seeing jewel tones in fashion, but for the home there is a softened grey element, so it’s adaptable.”

ANTIDOTE TO ANGST ~ Continued from page 25

The selection process began in December 2019 and reflected ideas from global travel. “At that point, we looked at more organic colours,” says Sharon Grech, media spokesperson colour and design for Benjamin Moore. The colour story formed around sun-baked hues. “Aegean Teal was nailed down before COVID in January-February. When we regrouped in April, we felt very strongly the need for stable, comfortable colours was on target.” Aegean Teal is the catalyst colour of 12 hues that evoke the simple pleasures of home, such as Rosy Peach, Foggy Morning and Potters Clay. “There is a warming-up of the palette overall,” says Grech. “Every 10 years we shift. There are still greys and a blue side, so we needed a bridge. Blue-green is a calming colour that people tend to love. It works with many others. You’re seeing jewel tones in fashion, but for the home there is a softened grey element so it’s adaptable.”  26 Lifestyle January/February 2021

Mid-tone Aegean Teal excels in a variety of applications. “You can put lighter and darker materials with it; it can work in any room. I can’t think of an interior space it couldn’t work,” says Grech. The kitchen figures prominently in promotional material. Grech says it is the hub of our activities, baking, eating, crafting, working – and Aegean Teal is an ideal backdrop. Cathy McManus-Cloes, owner of Hyde Park Paint & Paper, says: “It makes you comfortable at home where you spend a lot of time. These colours add a burst of excitement and everyone needs a burst of colour.”

Painting a room or a piece of furniture is an easy update. “It makes you feel better,” says McManus-Cloes. “It’s satisfying to paint a room. A fresh coat of paint, a few throw cushions and you’re good to go.” In business since 1993, she’s seen a lot of colours come and go. “These are colours we sell everyday because they’re calm. We’re thrilled with the palette. They appeal to every group.” “This year the colours all have an organic feel,” says Grech. “They work together well and can stand alone. You can envelop yourself with these colours.” The 2021 brochure (available at Hyde Park Paint & Paper) showcases the palette with tips on where and how to use it, including matte and glossy finishes. n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION HYDE PARK PAINT & PAPER 1175 Hyde Park Road, Suite 3 519-472-4100 www.hydeparkpaintandpaper.com January/February 2021 Lifestyle 27

The pandemic may have been tough on our mental wellness, but it has also taken a toll on our waistlines. The ‘freshman 15’ has now become the ‘COVID 19’ for many.

So even if you’ve had to buy bigger pairs of day and night pajamas, even if your skinny jeans have given way to sweat pants and even if you’re still struggling to lose last spring’s lockdown love handles, there are always accessories. Shiny, sparkly jewellery always fits right and highlights any outfit. A new leather purse or gloves feel like a luxury but can be justified as necessities. Boots purchased for those long walks along city streets or exploring area woodlots are a lift to spirits as well as feet. A soft, silky scarf wraps around your neck or hair to highlight a special ensemble. In the words of acting legend Olympia Dukakis, playing Clairee Belcher in the movie Steel Magnolias: “The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.” Those accessories can also be a bit of retail therapy or provide creative outlet when the scale is not our friend.

dream kitchens

KITCHEN connection Story By Ellen Ashton-Haiste Photography by Kimberley Bricker

When Kimberly Bricker planned the kitchen for her new lakeside home, she envisioned a modern farmhouse style with a cottage ambiance, reflecting the surrounding natural environment of water and woods. Though not a designer, as photographer for GCW Custom Kitchens she had seen numerous kitchens and incorporated features she admired into her own project.

GCW designer Jen Gilmore assisted but stresses that the style choices, from colours to cabinets, were Bricker’s. “She was focused and knew what roads she was going down. I was more of a sounding board and someone paying attention to technical elements, like space management, construction and installation.”

34 Lifestyle January/February 2021

EXPERT TIP Kitchens are all about balance, so pay attention to proportion and consistency.

A countryside atmosphere was created by using neutral “lake and wood” colours. This included dark wood on the cathedral ceiling, slate tile flooring complemented by black stainless-steel appliances. Shades of brown and grey were incorporated in the countertops and in the brick-pattern backsplash.

The vision was to create a comfortable and relaxed environment in a lake house cottage kitchen and a setting embracing the surrounding nature”

An oversized farmhouse sink, matte-finish leathered granite and antique seedy glass in the cabinet doors and on the light fixtures, which also sport oil-rubbed bronze hardware, further add to the ambiance. The white cabinets were given a rustic distressed finish and burnished to bring out subtle shading, a process Bricker describes as “incredible workmanship, all done by hand, so each cupboard is completely unique.” 

~ KIMBERLY BRICKER January/February 2021 Lifestyle 35

Local wood was used to fashion the timber trusses that support the ceiling and echo a full wall of windows overlooking the lake. The same wood was used to wrap the range hood. Bricker chose to have drawers, rather than cupboards, in the lower cabinets

for easier accessibility. These incorporate several features she particularly appreciates, including a convenient spice drawer, a pull-out knife block, a bread box compartment and a deep liquor cubicle beneath a small X-shaped wine rack. n

DESIGNER BIO Jen Gilmore has been a designer with GCW Custom Kitchens since 2004. She takes pride in creating technically accurate, customer-focused designs. She believes the beauty of design follows a precise plan, and she works with GCW artisans to deliver that in fulfilling the clients’ vision.

Deb Penhale (right) started Bayfield's Forgotten Felines four years ago and keeps it going with the help of partners Susan Watham and Roberta Stemp (not shown). Rescued cats are neutered and receive medical treatment before being re-homed by caring people like Heidi Clark (left), who adopted two kittens.

cats F CARING FOR

or many felines, a cat’s life is total bliss. They are showered by their human caregivers with food, shelter and affection. In return, a cat dispenses companionship and its own brand of love. Some humans say if they were to come back in an afterlife, they would want to be a cat. Be careful what you wish for as it may not be all liver pate and cream. Many cats live life rough. Some have been abandoned by disinterested owners.

LOVE TO SHARE IN LAKESIDE COMMUNITY By Clare Dear

Some have been forced into adoption when their owner’s circumstances change. Some cats are simply born into a life on the streets. Deb Penhale, a Bayfield area realtor, was showing a cottage to a client when she noticed what she thought was a raccoon on the deck. It turned out to be a tiny, abandoned kitten in distress. Penhale could not just leave the kitty, so she rescued it. That moment, more than four years ago, was the start of a program that has become known as Bayfield’s

Forgotten Felines (BFF.) Initially, BFF’s goal was to rescue, rehabilitate and release the felines after neutering, but it was not long before Penhale says she “couldn’t just let them go back onto the streets.” Now, her group operates a shelter for rescued felines and has launched a foster home and adoption program for the rehabilitated cats. They have rescued more than 500 felines in the Bayfield-Bluewater area, and the numbers keep growing. Every cat rescued by BFF is given a checkup and neutered by a local vet. If there are medical issues, the cat is given the treatment it needs. “We just brought a young cat in two days ago that was missing part of its leg,” Penhale says. “It needed emergency surgery to have his leg amputated. The vet bill was $800.” Another recent arrival was found to be suffering from a blockage in its urinary tract. After multiple treatments and medications, the cat has recovered, but the vet bill was $1,000. Medical expenses are paid by sponsorships and donations or sometimes out of Penhale’s pocket. “We’re definitely non-profit,” she quips. BFF charges an adoption fee of $125, but that only covers the cost of vet fees for neutering. The cats stay at the BFF shelter for as long as it takes to prepare them for adoption. There are currently more than 40 felines in the shelter – some have been there for a year. While local volunteer Mary Pounder oversees BFF’s foster home program, Penhale and a couple of volunteers maintain the shelter and its occupants. Penhale says it is a full-time job and she would really appreciate having a few more folks “to help scoop and feed.” Anyone interested in adopting a cat or kitten, or providing a foster home, can contact BFF at bayfieldsforgottenfelines@gmail.com. If you are interested in volunteering at the shelter, contact Penhale at the email address noted above, and if you’d like to contribute financially to the organization, mail your cheque to Bayfield’s Forgotten Felines, P.O. CONNECTING T HOPE FOR BETTER HEARING By Jill Ellis-Worthington

he perception of hearing aids and those who wear them is changing but not fast enough. Many still think that hearing aids are big, uncomfortable and only worn by the elderly. Don’t tell that to Camilla Bignell. The 58-year-old Londoner has a mild hearing loss and has worn hearing aids since she was in her early 40s. She noticed a decrease in hearing in her late 30s but waited five years to get tested. She was ahead of the curve, though,

40 Lifestyle January/February 2021

according to Treva Murray, co-owner of Beck Hearing Aids. “The average person waits seven years to be tested because they think they can get by,” she says. “There’s still a lot of stigma and denial around it.” Currently, many of those being tested at Beck Hearing are in their 40s, 50s and early 60s. This could be because of noise levels on jobsites experienced by younger seniors while working before present levels of regulation or from listening to music through headphones in the days that Walkmans and

Discmans found popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. The age of those diagnosed with hearing loss may continue to decline. A research audiologist studying hearing loss in adults at the National Centre for Hearing at Western University, Dr. Paula Folkeard says, “The World Health Organization is concerned about the young adults who are listening to headphones over extended periods of time now more than in the past.” Many younger people have grown up with earbuds and headphones piping in

music and entertainment from the time they were small children. And while technology does play a part in aggravating the issue, it also is a help, according to Folkeard. Many are using their iPhones and iPods to help listen in conversational settings. “These have some advantages for people with mild hearing loss,” she says, “as it can help with noise reduction when they use Listen Live with an IOS device.” Folkeard adds that a new feature on AirPods makes them work like hearing aids, which is called Headphone Accommodations in Transparency Mode. Hearing aid technology has also greatly improved over the old, clunky, uncomfortable versions of previous times. Many of Bignell’s friends do not realize that she wears hearing aids in noisy situations. She is a business coach and attended many large networking events with many people talking at the same time (prior to COVID-19), which created a challenging listening situation. So, she wore her aids then as well as during yoga class (closed eyes prevent lipreading) and at Toastmasters events because she didn’t want to miss a word. She’s not self conscious about wearing them as “they are pretty tiny and fit behind my ears. I do not care if people see them or not. I wouldn’t not wear them because of vanity,” Bignell explains. Both Murray and Folkeard cite anecdotal evidence that the pandemic is causing more people to get tested because of masks. “They didn’t realize that they’ve been reading lips the whole time but it’s noticeable now,” says Murray. Plexiglass dividers in stores also can obscure sound and make a hearing loss more apparent. If communicating and connecting with others is being hampered by a suspected hearing loss, being tested at a clinic like Beck Hearing is a good first step. Murray, who is 47, has worn hearing aids since she was 25 so she is able to offer perspective to patients at the clinic. “I understand both sides of it,” she says. Though some opt not to get hearing aids right away after diagnosis, those that do are fitted with the right equipment and get information about Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program – which pays $500 per aid. Murray adds that there are other government programs that help cover costs for those who qualify, including the Ontario Disability Support Program, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Supplemental workplace benefits also often help with costs. Other ways that professionals like Murray and her staff help is with counselling for tinnitus (ringing in the ears) 

PROTECT

YOUR HEARING ~

Good advice from Dr. Paula Folkeard National Centre for Audiology • Reduce the amount of time you are exposed to noise above 95 decibels. • Reduce the volume of music you are listening too, especially through headphones and earbuds. • Wear noise cancelling headphones at noisy venues, like rock concerts or sporting events. • Lower level, constant noise can be damaging, so use workplace protection that allows you to hear conversation, but screens noise. This is important for professionals like orchestral musicians or dentists. • Use phone apps to monitor your noise level and amount of time you spend listening to music on your phone. • Take care of health issues that can cause or aggravate hearing loss, like smoking and diabetes.

and hearing loss due to head injuries. They also make custom hearing protection for those who work in noisy environments and custom ear moulds for listening to music or cell phones. We live in a time in which the concept of isolation is receiving a lot of attention but hearing loss can isolate us in other ways. “If you have trouble hearing in social situations, you may withdraw and become more socially isolated,” explains Murray. “Some just turn up the TV and stay home.” Bignell’s work as a coach facilitating workplace communication says that misunderstandings can arise because of not hearing or mishearing and that can cause strife at home or on the job. “Choose to be present,” she adds. n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION

A taste of Italy START WITHhere THESE sub headYOUR goesFEAST here goes goesTREATS here

Story by Jill Ellis-Worthington Photography by Abi Collins

C

hef Volker Jendhoff has travelled the world, cooking in interesting places and for interesting people. From his native Germany – beginning his career with an apprenticeship and college – to Switzerland to the Netherlands (where he worked for the Holland America cruise line) to France and a swing through the Caribbean: Bahamas, Bermuda and Barbados (cooking at notable hotels and restaurants) honing his craft. Part way through these journeys, the other London was a stop at the then famous French restaurant Les Trois Amis, a favourite of luminaries like Princess Margaret. After coming to Canada in 1977, Volker cooked his way across the country with stops in exclusive hotels in British Columbia and Alberta. After landing in our London in 1984 and pleasing palates at bigger venues, Chef Jendhoff is now semi-retired and working with a former student at Steel Grill Catering. He thinks serving these carpaccio crostini is the perfect way to kick off an Italian feast this winter and recommends serving them as a starter, followed by a rich pasta dish or veal piccata. Don’t forget a couple of robust Italian reds to complete the meal, with a nice tiramisu for dessert.

BEEF CARPACCIO CROSTINI (Serves four)

10 oz fresh raw beef tenderloin or beef strip loin (trimmed, fat and silver skin removed) 1 small French baguette (sliced) 2 oz cream cheese or creamy goat cheese Fresh arugula (garnish) Capers (garnish) Parmesan shavings SPICE RUB 3 Tbsp. olive oil 2-3 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 Tbsp. sea salt 2 Tbsp. ground black pepper 10-12 sprigs fresh thyme (chopped) DRESSING OR DRIZZLE 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 Tbsp. sea salt 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

METHOD Rub the raw meat with olive oil, mustard, salt, pepper and fresh chopped thyme. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, put into the fridge for about one hour. Unwrap the beef. Sear in a very hot frying pan with a touch of olive oil. Just sear the outside, leaving the inside rare. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and place in the freezer for about one to two hours. Remove from freezer and slice as thinly as possible. Put sliced carpaccio on toasted cheese crostinis. Garnish with fresh arugula, capers and parmesan shavings. Drizzle with Dijon dressing just before serving.

MORE THAN

skin deep

Chris Cernecca (centre) couldn’t be happier with the changes in her life and activity level since having a surgical procedure called circumferential abdominal plasty (tummy tuck). Dr. Arjang Yazdani (left) and his caring staff (surgical nurse Nadine Sabino is pictured at right) ensured that she understood the process, gave excellent before- and after-surgery care and ensured her she made the right decision. The bright, welcoming clinic is located on Waterloo Street at the corner of Oxford Street.

46 Lifestyle January/February 2021

A STORY OF GAINING FUNCTION AND CONFIDENCE By Jill Ellis-Worthington

C

hris Cernecca is used to doing difficult things. She lost over 250 pounds, saved thousands of dollars for surgery and had a painful recovery period of eight weeks. But now that she can cycle, run and swim easily, the 55-year-old Londoner feels like she is the “best version of myself.” After having gastric bypass surgery five years ago, in 2019 Cernecca wanted to rid herself of the excess skin created by her dramatic weight loss. She loved her new active lifestyle, but the excess skin was holding her back from fully participating in some activities. After consulting with her family doctor and doing research, Cernecca decided to work with Dr. Arjang Yazdani of Yazdani Aesthetics at the corner of Oxford and Waterloo Streets. There were several consultations before the surgery to ready Cernecca for circumferential abdominal plasty, which is often called a tummy tuck. Hers, however, removed skin from both the front and the back. Thoroughly discussing expected outcomes is part of Dr. Yazdani’s process and the two agreed that this procedure would best balance Cernecca’s body to give her the mobility she desired. Cernecca also details the care she received after the six-hour operation, done as a day surgery, with multiple follow-up appointments and consultations. “Dr. Yazdani said, ‘Now you’re my patient for life.’ and that really increased my comfort level throughout the whole process.” Yazdani Aesthetics concentrates on three types of aesthetic plastic surgery: body contouring (the above

is just one example), breast (lifts, enhancements and reductions) and facial (eyelid rejuvenation, face and neck lifts) and rhino plasty (nose). An integral part of the process is reaching a mutual understanding of the patient’s expectations for the outcome of the surgery and how it will affect his/her life. “This is the most important feature of the relationship – agreeing on realistic outcomes,” Yazdani explains. This often means that he tells potential patients that plastic surgery isn’t right for them during an initial consultations. Nonsurgical options are one of the fastest growing types of aesthetic treatments, according to Dr. Yazdani. Less expensive and less invasive, many opt for nonsurgical options like injectables (Botox), chemical peels and dermal fillers for the face. Laser, electromagnetic and radio frequency

devices remove fat and extra skin. “Before, patients who want skin tightening and fat reduction may have only had the surgical option, but these (devices) get such good results that many are electing to have it done that way. It’s not as effective as surgery but is good for people who want a less expensive and less time-consuming option (less down time),” says Dr. Yazdani. He adds that neither surgical or nonsurgical options are a replacement for good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle in dealing with weight issues. All patients see the staff nutritionist as part of the treatment protocol. Either option can pay off in enjoying a better quality of life. “Before the weight loss and the surgery, I didn’t feel seen or heard even though I was usually the biggest person in the room. Now I feel seen and heard,” says Cernecca. n

reathe easy – sounds appealing any time and especially now. It is what attracted Jody Shaw to salt therapy and inspired her to offer the treatment through her new business Purity Salt Cave and Healing Spa. “I believe in salt therapy so much,” says Shaw. “It helped our son and I wanted to help my friends and community to experience it. Salt therapy is very powerful, very healing.” Also known as halotherapy from the Greek word halos meaning salt, it was developed in the mid-nineteenth century by a Polish physician who observed his patients who worked in salt mines had no respiratory issues, unlike other miners. He imitated a salt mine by using dry aerosol micro-particles of salt in an enclosed space. His approach spread through Europe to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, and later, seasonal allergies, arthritis and acne. After Shaw’s son was diagnosed with asthma, she investigated natural methods and discovered salt therapy. The benefits allowed him to easily keep up with his hockey team. “I tell my story, and I’m excited to tell it,” she says. Shaw wanted to share more than the

story; she wanted to share the benefits of salt therapy with her hometown. “I wanted to create a beautiful, relaxing, Zen-like place for people to enjoy. They can spend 45 minutes and destress. It’s cozy with bricks on the wall, salt on the floor, like a day at the beach.” Clients sit in the salt cave and breath normally. Temperature, humidity and ventilation are carefully controlled. The

spa’s website compares salt therapy to a toothbrush cleaning the respiratory system: “Dry salt acts like a sponge attracting foreign substances along its path through the respiratory tract.” With a holistic strategy, Shaw brought together a team of practitioners to offer salt therapy, massage therapy, reiki and chiropractic services. “I used all the different modalities. They complement each other. So why not have them here as a one-stop-shop for a lot of health concerns.” Shaw planned to open her spa in April 2020, but the pandemic forced her to delay until July 1. Within months, she doubled the size and increased staff to meet the demand. Clients come from the area, as well as Sarnia, Lucan and Stratford. They range from six-year-olds to those in their 80s. “It’s rewarding to help friends,” she says. “I want to help my community.” Her success shows they want to breathe easy too. n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION PURITY SALT CAVE AND HEALING SPA 45 Ontario Street North, Grand Bend 519-238-7258 (SALT) www.puritysaltcaveandhealingspa.ca

A Guide to Planning Your Funeral and Cemetery Services Often, we avoid talking about death, even though it is a fact of life. But many find that once they start discussing their plans with their families, they feel a great sense of relief and satisfaction knowing their wishes will be carried out. Your funeral service should reflect you and your life experiences. Ways to personalize include memorial cards that showcase images and some facts about you, like your favourite travel destination. You could also plan a reception that highlights your favourite food. Whether cremation or burial is chosen, you can also design a memorial that reflects your unique personality. The choices for lasting remembrance are as limitless as your imagination: from elegant

Arbor Memorial Inc.

upright monuments and benches, to the simple beauty of a memorial tree, to photographically engraved markers in a garden dedicated to your faith and culture It’s also important to realize that your Will is not the place to specify your funeral and cemetery arrangements. That’s because your Will may not be read until after the funeral service is held. What’s more, your funeral bills will have to be paid immediately, while insurance funds may not be available for weeks or months.

hen considering a countertop for your kitchen, it is difficult to find a better source than Cambria. This family-owned company, now in its 20th year, is the leading producer of American-made natural quartz surfaces. The innovative products, available in the London and Strathroy areas at two Progressive Countertop showrooms, are strong and durable, making them less likely to scratch, chip or stain. They are maintenance free (no sealing or polishing required). The surfaces are non-porous, so they do not absorb moisture from food that could contain harmful bacteria. Now Cambria is building on its status as an industry leader by collaborating with Gensler – a world-renowned integrated architecture, design, planning and consulting firm – to launch The Coordinates Collection™ . It consists of 52 Lifestyle January/February 2021

The collection’s classic designs – the result of a two-year research and development process – coordinate together, including tone and texture. They are based on NCS – Natural Colour System®©, which is a scientifically based system that is a global standard for definition, quality assurance and communication of colour. “We are thrilled to work with the Gensler team on this first-of-its-kind product and are honoured they chose Cambria as a surface partner for this collaboration,” says Summer Kath, Cambria’s executive vice-president of product development. “What we built together truly reflects the talent that Gensler cultivates, and we cannot wait to meaningfully expand our footprint within the architecture and

In addition to Silverleaf, Bridlewood is currently building in Kilworth’s Edgewater Estates, The Heathwoods at Lambeth, The Avenue in Warbler Woods, Fox Field Estates in the city’s northwest, and their newest community Sunningdale West, which is nearly sold out. n

Designers’ Edge By Covers WINDOW COVERINGS – LESS IS MORE

Earlier trends in draperies featured more fabric and fullness. This has given way to a sleeker look, says Willi Van Deven, in-house designer at Designer’s Edge by Covers, which provides customized window treatments for clients in the London region. “Simple is the focus these days, very clean lines and not fussy. The fabrics are light and airy, nothing heavy.” Sheers are popular, she says, but they are not being layered with heavier drapes, as was often the case in the past. Today’s versions are more textured, with a linen-like finish, to offer an additional level of privacy. Van Deven says privacy issues are a priority for homeowners as houses are built closer together. This has created growing popularity for sheer blinds.

These feature vanes that tilt open, encased front and back, in a layer of sheer fabric. When the vanes are open, light filters through the fabric. “So, they get the privacy but with the look of sheers.” Another alternative is to combine a privacy blind with a drape or side panel. Here, Van Deven sees an exception to the lighter fabrics, in that velvet remains a popular material for side panels. “Velvet looks rich.” n

At London’s Beachcomber Hot Tubs this is translating to a focus on items like saunas and charcoal grills, says dealership owner Jeff McColl. Infrared saunas are attracting attention for their health benefits, McColl says. He cites their ability to rid the body of toxins and boost the immune system and even burn calories for the bonus of weight loss among the benefits. Other advantages, he adds, include muscle relaxation and a better night’s sleep. “There’s not enough education about this, and we’re putting some effort into that.” The barbecues that are drawing interest are kamado grills, ceramic

Today the company boasts two showrooms – in St. Thomas and London – plus a manufacturing plant producing the latest in cabinetry technology. “We want to make it easy for clients by having one place to come to pick out countertops, hardware and specialty items like our pullout cabinets,” say marketing team members Andrew Simoes and Kimberly Bricker. “Our designers will also help with other details, like sinks and faucets, lighting and colours.”

Bricker says their focus is on functional kitchens, in any style from contemporary to traditional. But offerings go beyond kitchens, encompassing spaces including bathrooms, offices, entertainment areas like theatre rooms and even tool organization cabinetry for the garage. She stresses that all the work is custom design. “We truly are a fully custom company. Intimate, comfortable and unpretentiously luxurious, Voila is a prominent addition to a notable neighborhood. At Voila, what you see is what you get. High-end finishes, such as HanStone quartz countertops, hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, valance lighting, finished basements, and more are included in the base price.

“We take out the unknown factor so you can maintain the price point you have personally set. We deliver on budget and on time.” “When you tour our model homes, everything on view is incorporated in our all-inclusive price,” says Dave Stimac, president of the Ironstone Building Company in London. “We take out the unknown factor so you can maintain the price point you have personally set. We deliver on budget and on time.”

Rather than pre-sell townhomes and single family homes, Ironstone builds, then sells, in several desirable communities in London. The company incorporates the most popular trends and different neutral colour palettes to suit any décor. Stimac invites, “Choose the home you prefer at the location you love. Then start packing.” Ironstone’s latest community, Voila, is in a well-established area near an environmentally protected green space, Stimac notes. “This mature neighbourhood is now being reinvigorated with the addition of new contemporary homes.” By eliminating the time and expense typically required for upgrades, Ironstone keeps its costs down and passes on savings to its clients. “Our Ironclad Pricing means we deliver on our commitments on time. This gives you better peace of mind – at a better price. We understand there is nothing more disappointing or inconvenient for a homebuyer than a delayed possession date. Our pre-built homes are ready, waiting for you to move in.” Ironstone is currently building in Summerside, North-East London, and Pond Mills. Gliding Shelf Solutions A gliding shelf easily slides out of the cabinet, putting the desired item at your fingertips.

Reaching that pan or dish stored at the back of a kitchen cupboard can be a pain in the back. Or the knees. Or both. But there is a solution: a gliding shelf that easily slides out of the cabinet, putting the desired item at your fingertips. That’s what Gliding Shelf Solutions offers. “Essentially it makes the space work better and makes day-to-day life easier,” says Dennis Beker, owner of the company’s London dealership. He’s been installing the pull-out shelving in kitchen and bathroom cupboards across Southwestern Ontario for the past decade and has experienced the relief and satisfaction of numerous clients. He notes that the shelves can be particularly helpful in enabling seniors and those with disabilities to live independently. The Canadian-made wood pull-outs can be custom fitted to any cupboards in the home, including pantries. Beker has occasionally converted closets to pantries with gliding shelves. “A pantry is wonderful but it can be a nightmare to get that can of soup at the back,” he says. This year tax incentives from federal and Ontario governments are making it even easier for seniors 65 and over to improve their safe home spaces. The combined credits from the existing federal Home Accessibility credit the new Ontario Seniors’ Home Safety credit will total 40 per cent of the cost (see boxed information). “It’s an unbelievable gift,” Beker says. n

Oke Woodsmith Building systems CONCRETE MAKES IT COZY They are warmer, quieter, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. These are just some of the benefits, cited by Randall Oke, president of Oke Woodsmith Building Systems, of homes built with insulated concrete forms (ICF) as opposed to wood framing. Concrete sandwiched between layers of an insulating material, such as foam, is used for both the foundation and above-ground levels of the houses. Oke Woodsmith was one of the pioneers in building ICF homes in the Ontario marketplace in the early 1990s. They also began incorporating radiant in-floor heating on all levels for the ultimate in comfort. “With the heated concrete floors, there is truly a difference in these homes,” Oke says. “The comfort is noticeable when first stepping inside the front door.” This is particularly evident in the lower level, he adds. “It doesn’t feel like a basement. You feel like you’re on the main floor.” The consistent heat levels and airtight walls translate into lower energy costs and savings over time, he notes. As a reusable product, concrete is also a bonus for the environment. The thickness of the interior walls cuts down on noise for a quieter atmosphere. Oke Woodsmith uses ICF constrution in all its custom-built homes for the basement foundation and often for the above-grade levels as well. However, if cost is an issue, the builder will construct what Oke calls a “hybrid.” This is an ICF lower level and main level heated concrete floor but wood framing for the superstructure walls, insulated to R-32. When the company first began

“With the heated concrete floors, there is truly a difference in these homes. The comfort is noticeable when first stepping inside the front door.” building with ICF, it was a considerable cost upgrade, Oke says. But with lumber prices trending upwards and building codes’ increasing insulation requirements, its use is becoming more affordable and, thus, more mainstream in custom homes, as well as high-rise residences. “In a couple of homes we’re doing now that were supposed to be wood frame, we switched to ICF and it’s

equal to, if not better than, the cost of the wood,” Oke says. “And they’re well insulated, quiet and built to last.” In fact, the strength of the home is an added benefit that has made them more common in regions challenged by hurricanes. The public can get a look at what goes into these homes at two models the company is building that showcase ICF construction. n

Living Lighting London dispels darkness

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

F

or more than three decades, a North London retailer has been illuminating homes across the region. Living Lighting London, a franchise in Canada’s largest chain of specialty lighting stores, was opened in 1985 by Tom Arenburg. It’s located in the Masonville Plaza on Richmond Street at Fanshawe Park Road, across from Masonville Shopping Centre. When Arenburg retired in 2019, his daughter, Robin, and her husband Dwight Fickling, carried on the family business. Fickling attributes its success and longevity to staff expertise and a focus on service. He stresses that whether customers are looking for a light bulb or a chandelier or anything in between,

ABOVE London Living owner Dwight Fickling.

they receive the same level of quality staff assistance. “That is our motto. It’s how we operate and we’ve been very successful at it over 30-plus years.” Their staff members have the knowledge and experience to aid customers in making the best possible purchase decisions. “With our products, it’s really a piece of fashion for their home that they’re buying, and they often want to talk it over with someone,” Fickling says. “So to have a consultant walk them through that process is extremely beneficial.” Living Lighting London provides everything needed for home illumination, from floor and table lamps to vanity lights, ceiling fixtures and

chandeliers. It carries product from a range of manufacturers as well as the company’s own in-house brand. Fickling says the store keeps up to date with trends and changes in the marketplace.
