I
know it could be considered a bit hokey, but one of my all-time favourite songs is Summertime from the musical Porgy and Bess; it’s a lovely song on its own but the line “It’s summer time and the living is easy” stuck in my mind when my mother used to sing it to me as a child and it’s never left. I was and am enchanted by the concept of having an entire season of ‘living easy,’ of being breezy, and a bit lazy. Work and real life don’t cease during the hot months, but they take on a different vibe. It seems that folks are a little nicer and a little softer spoken, a little happier and a little less stressed, a little bit more thoughtful and ready to enjoy time more fully. We’re not rushing inside to get away from the hurly, burly wind and chill. Snow doesn’t trap us indoors, making us grouchy and giving us cabin fever. Oh, I know a lot of people who love the cold weather, the snow and all the activities it brings but I don’t think they can argue that when summer comes, it’s more pleasant to be outside and celebrate this short season we call Canadian summer. Even though summer is a more relaxed time, we’ve not been sitting idle. The Lifestyle Magazine website has
been redesigned and has more content you’ll want to check out at www.lifestylemagazineonline.com. And don’t forget to like our Facebook page and share our posts at www.facebook. com/lifestylemagazineonline to keep up with us when you’re away from home on summer travels. This issue of Lifestyle is dedicated to living life easy and enjoying warm weather by inviting friends for a backyard barbecue, by donning cool fashions that look hot, by traveling to explore new places, by spending time reading at the beach, by meditating in the garden and by enjoying quality time with family. Enjoy summer, when the living is easy!

Over 30 Years of Excellence
Trevor Lively of Blue Jay Irrigation estimates 70 per cent of his company’s new installations have some sort of smart controller included. One such smart controller operates like a weather station, collecting information including rainfall, humidity and moisture. The controller uses this information to regulate the irrigation system according to the data, regularly reprogramming itself with updated information. The smart controller knows how much water is needed and makes adjustments based on the amount of rain received, even if customers are away, giving them “peace of mind,” Lively explains. “It takes the guessing game out of the consumer’s hands,” Lively says. “They’re not overwatering the lawn; they’re not under-watering it.” “Within two to three years, you’ll get your money back,” Christopher says. “After that, you’ll start saving money every year because you’ll be saving about 30 per cent of the water used in your irrigation system.” There are even controllers that can be accessed from a smart phone, which is internet-based and hooked into local weather stations. watering tips
The City of London’s Water Conservation website offers many useful tips to reduce water usage for irrigation systems: www.london.ca/ residents/Water/WaterConservation/Pages/ Irrigation-System-.aspx. London recently introduced a “Growing Naturally” program, says Tara Clayton, the City’s water demand manager, that focuses on “the right plant for the right place…really planting as per your conditions, being soil and light exposure,” as well as picking native or droughtresistant plants, which don’t require a lot of watering. For more information, visit http://www.london.ca/ residents/Property-Matters/ Lawns-Gardens/Pages/EcoYard-Evaluation-Program.aspx Christopher and Lively agree that making adjustments to watering times and frequency on a seasonal basis is key. Christopher explains in a spring when there is a lot of rain, the system doesn’t have to come on very long but that could change as spring becomes summer. Even standard irrigation controllers should be adjusted on the basis of weather forecasting and history on at least a bi-weekly basis. Lively says the biggest waste of water happens when homeowners put a sprinkler out and forget they’ve left it running. “Even something as simple as a hose timer can lead to a huge savings.” n

hen you’re the top brand in the luxury car segment, you can’t afford to be complacent. “We want to stay number one in luxury brands,” says Dennis Long, general manager of London’s Dalmar Motors as he surveys the company’s sparkling new Audi dealership – a move intended to keep Audi competitive with other luxury brand dealerships such as Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. The $11-million project, erected on the former site of the Patton’s Place/ Tepperman’s furniture outlets, has been built according to the German automaker’s new global corporate specifications and design. The results
are truly impressive. The clean lines of the bright, open showroom, which can display up to 13 vehicles, are dominated by a sweeping wall, which spans the entire width of the structure. Its design conveys the look of a racetrack, which is a key part of Audi’s heritage. The finished ceiling is dotted with efficient LED fixtures, which are used throughout the 30,000-square-foot (2,800 square metres) building. Audi customers will appreciate an innovative feature in the new showroom – a configuration room. There, they can evaluate paint colours and interior trim combinations on an iPad, with the image of “their” Audi projected on a large
flat-screen TV. Once satisfied with their choices, the order is finalized. The overall pristine look of the dealership carries into the drive-in service area and the air-conditioned shop, where nine bays are available. Custom work counters and built-in drawers replace the typical array of tool chests. The place is immaculate. As a finishing touch, a car wash bay has been included. b

Boutique condo evokes image of new York Brownstone’s enduring design
Timeless sophistication By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
H
istoric ambiance combined with sophisticated charm and luxurious touches are key features that set Parks Edge, a boutique condominium building in the heart of WortleyVillage, apart on London’s residential scene.
Developers Brian Baillargeon and Peter Jones, longtime Old South residents, wanted to maintain the neighbourhood character. With brick and stone cladding, custom cast metal railings and a crown moulding feature at the roofline, the threestorey building resembles “two New York brownstones put together,” Baillargeon says. Parks Edge is slated for occupancy in spring 2017. Inside, seven two-bedroom suites, some with a den and all on the 24 Lifestyle July/August 2016
second and third floors, will be overflowing with modern amenities. In-floor radiant heating, central air, gas fireplaces, quartz countertops, five stainless steel appliances, no-maintenance engineered wide-plank white oak flooring, and expansive windows with remote-controlled blinds all speak to luxury living. Each unit will have a laundry room and two bathrooms, including a generous master ensuite with walk-in closet/dressing room. The building boasts 10-foot ceilings on the main and second levels, extending to 11 feet on the upper level. Covered terraces, complete with gas, water and electricity, will offer scenic views of the Village, an adjacent ravine and conservation lands with Thames Park beyond. Baillargeon notes that the design and engineering far exceeds minimum code and standards,

Thought-provoking, diverting, entrancing – you’ll enjoy these recommendations for your summer reading enjoyment
T
here are few annual retreats more pleasurable than grabbing a good book and plopping down by the water, under a tree or on a deck chair for an afternoon. We want our summer reading to be breezy and refreshing – like the weather itself – with an aim of giving us a break from the daily grind and renewing us in some way. We have six books to recommend for this delightful time of year.
1. Villa america

by Liza Klaussmann
4. raise Your Vibration
This book is a fictional rendering of a historical group that included Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway. It centres on Sara and Gerald Murphy and their entourage in France in the 1920s. “It catches your attention because of all these interesting historical figures,” says Hilary Thomas of Oxford Book Shop.
by Kyle Gray
2. Diana Herself by Martha Beck

5. a spool of blue tHreaD by Anne Tyler
In this allegory, the protagonist is living an uneventful life when destiny calls. Diana has multiple psychological diagnoses as she embarks on a journey that leads to disaster, yet ultimately transforms. Beck is a best-selling author who writes with humour, wisdom and a knowledge of life’s fluctuations.
Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, this book deals with a family saga across generations. The extended/blended family is easily relatable. “(Tyler) treats her characters with great care, but she always tells the truth about them,” Thomas says.
3. a Year of marVellous WaYs

With a lighter spirit in the summer, some may want to explore their inner talents. The author helps his readers learn to develop and trust their instincts. “He’s straightforward with a fresh energy,” says Mystic Bookshop’s Jody Trevail.
An elderly woman takes in a young soldier, who is broken from the war. She helps him to heal through storytelling and sloe gin.
6. butterflY oracle carDs for life cHanges This selection could involve friends. The book deals with navigating life changes. “It’s a good choice for the picnic table, and it’s something you can share - a fun-in-sun group activity,” says Trevail. n

ll 18 holes are open for play at Lambton Shores’ Indian Hills Golf Club, showcasing multiple enhancements to its fairways and greens. When the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation purchased the long-established course in 2006, the dream was to turn it into the best in the region, says general manager Ken Hoare. He believes they’ve succeeded. “We’ve been working to steadily improve the quality of the course, everything from rebuilding tee blocks to new bridges, retaining walls, overall conditioning. It’s just night and day compared to what it used to be.” With everything completed, last year

was set to be the breakout season. But Mother Nature had other ideas. In June 2015, just days before peak season’s start, natural gas, built up in an underground cavern, erupted onto the course, breaking retaining walls, irrigation pipes and sprinkler heads, shattering concrete and creating a crater that a small car could fit into halfway up the tenth fairway. The back nine remained closed for the remainder of the year as environmental experts and staff worked to fix the course and put safety protocols in place. The signature eleventh hole, described by Hoare as “a visually amazing par 3, with a peninsula green and

beautiful wooden retaining wall,” took the brunt of the damage and has been fully rebuilt. Players, this spring, have been thrilled with that and the refurbished course, he says. “People who grew up in the area but hadn’t played here in 10 years are just in awe. They are saying ‘It’s always been a nice layout but it was never cared for like a high-end golf course. And now it is.’” b

t has come a long way from being home to the boardrooms of Port Stanley’s Town Hall – and after a couple of years of renovations - the Port Stanley Festival Theatre has opened its doors on a new season and a newly refurbished venue. “Because this was the Town Hall, we had just grown out of the space and much of it had been retrofitted to meet our needs,” explains Melissa Kempf, theatre manager. “We put on five to six performances each year, with 20 to 30 production crew, and over 100 volunteers, so we just ran out of room.” The renovation to the theatre started in 2013 and was supported by its Expand the Experience fundraising campaign. added 51 new seats, bringing it to a total of 202. There are also new patron washrooms on the second level and improvements to the administration, volunteer, and performers’ areas. This year’s season, the thirtyeighth in the theatre’s history, features five productions, two of which are world premieres. Kempf said that this year’s lineup is in keeping with the theatre’s history and mandate, and that the new renovations, specifically the additional capacity, will help the venue better support playwrights and actors in the future. “What is near and dear to our hearts is focusing on new theatre and supporting Canadian writers,” Kempf says. “We are part of the Canadian Actors

That means we can offer higher wages and with further funding and support through ticket revenue, we can increase workshops for Canadian playwright development.” And there’s still more to be done. Kempf explains that the theatre is planning a renovation of its patron lounge and opening of a rooftop patio in 2017. It is continuing its fundraising efforts to that effect, including the sale of seat licenses (only a few remaining) and establishing a legacy donation program. n FOR MORE INFORMATION Port Stanley Festival Theatre 302 Bridge Street, Number 6, Port Stanley 519-782-4353 • www.portstanleytheatre.ca To doNaTe • www.playbythelake.ca.

Summer iS barbecue SeaSon, evoking images of sizzling steaks and succulent burgers. But before putting grilled fare to the taste test, there’s a more distasteful job at hand. A thorough annual barbecue cleaning is essential for health and safety, says Tilda King, who operates London-based Ovenclean with her husband David, offering professional cleaning for cooking appliances. “You can never be too careful,” King says. “Dirty barbecues could lead to food poisoning.” And there can be other safety hazards, she adds. For those who prefer DIY to a professional cleaner, she offers the following tips.
AFFORDABLE METAL ROOFING
● Grill clean Brush grills thoroughly after each use and season cast iron racks with cooking oil to prevent rusting. Food stuck to the grill can result in bacteria growth. ● Don’t Stop at the top Digging deep to clean the cavity is essential. Carbon build-up causes rust that can shorten the life of the appliance. Burners also need attention; they can get dangerously clogged, creating a fire hazard.

Luscious Lunches on Lakeside patios By Jill Ellis-Worthington
W
Weekends in July and August, spectacular sunsets will have a musical accompaniment provided by live performers at Beach Street Station in Goderich.
indows open, radio cranked, sun pouring into the car – some of summer’s best memories are made on road trips. Taking a drive along Lake Huron to enjoy dining alfresco should definitely be on your mustdo list this summer. First stop, Smackwater Jack’s Taphouse in Grand Bend, seats 170 patrons on two patios which both offer spectacular views of Lake Huron sunsets. This lush ambiance is complemented by a menu featuring entrees comprised of locally-sourced meats (Metzger Meats, Hayter’s Turkeys and Purdy’s Fish Market) and produce (area growers). Proprietor Brad Oke jokes, “We have more of a 25 kilometre diet here, instead of the usual 100 mile diet.”
According to Oke, 100 beers are available, “from Trappist to domestic.” A range of craft beers is offered, with 16 taps spouting Ontario-produced suds and in a newer twist, locally crafted spirits are available.“We want to be as local as possible,” explains Oke, “so we’ve added spirits to the line-up from the new distillery, Junction 56. We’re offering their gin and vodka.” On seven evenings during the summer, mostly long weekends, you can enjoy live music on the patios at Smackwater Jack’s, as well. No worry about drinking and driving, as this eatery offers pick up and drop off for patrons in and around Grand Bend. Continue up the coast to Bayfield and drop into the Black Dog Village Pub and Bistro. When the term gastropub was

coined, the originator might have been referring to the Black Dog. Kathleen and Ted McIntosh are showing their Celtic roots in the menu, as well as the impressive array of single malts and Irish whiskeys. The UK-oriented fare’s ingredients are largely sourced locally and 20 beers are on offer to accompany such favourites as fish and chips. Festooned with planters full of colourful flowers, the patio seats 60 and gives diners an opportunity to people watch, as visitors to this lakeside village wander Main Street searching through the many boutiques that line both sides of the road. Heading north, Goderich’s newest dining delight is Beach Street Station. The century-old CPR station was literally picked up and moved closer to the water’s edge to allow diners a spectacular view of Lake Huron while sitting on one of two patios that seat 150 guests. The patio menu is made up of slightly more casual fare, with sharing plates and finger foods. Sherry Marshall, who owns the restaurant with husband Herb, terms it “casual fine dining.” On Friday and Saturday evenings in July and August, those spectacular sunsets will have a musical accompaniment provided by live performers. n

Gardening is good for you
By Jill Ellis-Worthington
ConneCt with the earth to improve mind, body and soul Nearly everyone loves a beautiful yard, a lovely green space, a little patch of heaven. Sometimes groundskeeping one’s outdoor spaces can seem onerous but you can achieve a lot to improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing by working in the garden.
Physical imProvement Cheryl Pattyn, a certified personal trainer with Positive Image Fitness, says that a complete workout can be achieved just from working in the yard. “You can improve endurance, flexibility and strength when gardening properly,” she says. “It can be good exercise working all major muscle groups: legs, glutes, abs and arms.” Some activities, like vigorous raking, digging or hoeing, are both aerobic and strengthen the upper body. She advises that switching hands and placing the

opposite foot forward will cause you to strengthen both sides equally and gives a better mental workout. Lifting bags of mulch, stones or dirt by keeping your core tight as you lift the bag off the ground improves core strength. Pattyn adds that switching from a high-intensity activity to a lower one will give a better workout and allow your gardening experience to last longer as your body will have recovery time. She cautions that drinking water and stretching afterwards are as important as doing these during any type of workout.
mental/emotional imProvement Dr. Lisa Bogue, a psychotherapist, psychiatrist and peak performance coach, says there are many layers to improving one’s emotional health through gardening. “Anytime you’re moving your body and being physically active will improve your
mood; exercise is as beneficial as anti-depressants on improving mood,” she says. Bogue adds that “gardening lowers cortisol (stress hormone), helps the function of the immune system and affects your subjective perception of stress. In addition, when you’re outside you get increased vitamin D, which has been correlated with mood improvement.” Gardening can be a form of moving meditation. “When people are gardening they are focused on that so they can let go of everything else about their day; just focus on the plants.” To enhance your ability to focus, take a few deep breaths, saying ‘breathing in stillness; breathing out the busy day.’ Bogue adds that you can also practice a sound meditation in the garden by “listening to the sounds of the birds and bees, focusing on all the layers of sound you hear around you. Being focused on that, not the busyness of the day.” n
Protect
your back While working in the yard, it’s important to keep your back’s health in mind. Dr. rod overton, with adelaide Family chiropractic, has these tips. • Warm up with 10 or 15 minutes of walking and do some light stretches • Break your work into chunks. Doing a kneeling activity for a short while, then doing a standing activity. • Kneel on a pad instead of bending when weeding. • Use a wheelbarrow to move heavy objects. • Switch arms while raking to avoid repetitive strain injury. • Use a hose instead of a watering can. • Don’t lift a heavy bag or load and then twist your back suddenly. This causes the most visits by gardeners to his office.

ummer fun usually includes showing some skin in shorts, skirts and swimsuits and wearing less makeup, but those suffering from spider veins and related vascular issues including rosacea may be apprehensive about exposing flushed areas of skin that exhibits dilated threads, webs, and clusters of purplish-red, spider veins. “Those with spider veins or telangiectasias, as they’re technically called, are usually delighted by the effects of medical treatments such as sclerotherapy injections and non-invasive, non-ablative, KTP and Nd: YAG laser treatments to remove and improve the appearance of spider veins as well as slightly larger, underlying reticular veins to create a clearer, more even, skin tone,” says Dr. Wei Jing Loo, a dermatologist at Derm Effects in London. Loo notes that rosacea, which is also treatable, is a common contributing factor to facial telangiectasias. Spider veins and related venous issues are caused by genetics and other factors including lengthy periods of standing, sun exposure, or extreme heat and may also result from hormonal and post-pregnancy factors. “Spider and related vein issues affect women and men of all ages but are especially prevalent and apparent in

women aged 30 to 65 with thinner, lighter, more translucent skin,” says Chassidy Pazitny, a laser technician and medical esthetician at Derm Effects. According to Pazitny, spider veins don’t disappear without treatment, but are successfully eliminated by non-invasive laser treatments and in some cases, with sclerotherapy injections that specifically target non-functional, unsightly blood vessels. Depending upon the number of spider veins being treated, four to six, 15- to 45-minute treatment sessions scheduled about a month apart are recommended. “Most patients report feeling some slight heat and a pinging, prickly sensation during treatment and spider vein removal. Most find that they can return to most daily activities almost immediately, experiencing only slight swelling, bruising and discolouration at the treatment sites,” notes Pazitny. It usually takes two to four weeks for the treated veins to completely disappear. The usual post leg vein treatment protocol is to keep one’s legs elevated at rest and to avoid intense physical activity, sun exposure, hot baths and to wear support stockings to help prevent recurring leg vein issues. n
AFTER SHOT: A close up shot of the same patient’s legs four weeks following treatment with Nd: YAG laser treatment. Depending on the amount and severity of the venous issues being treated it usually takes approximately three treatment sessions for complete clearance.
