BUILDING ORIGINAL HOMES FOR ORIGINAL PEOPLE We’ll make your next home as original as you are Why settle for a run-of-the-mill custom home when you can have an entirely original one? With a planning process that starts with nothing more than your dreams and a blank sheet of paper, you can be sure your Riverstone Original Home will be every bit as unique and remarkable as you are. We’ve been building original homes for well over 20 years now, and each one has been entirely different than the one before it. And that’s exactly how it should be.

EDITOR’S note I

have a life list, not a bucket list.

It’s just a bit of a different mindset. I know the term bucket list was pop ularized by the movie of the same name, starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. I guess if one has been diagnosed with a terminal disease, then bucket list may be an appropriate term. I prefer life list as many, if not most, of us don’t know when we might shuffle off this mortal coil, but we do know that there’s a finite amount of time to accomplish all that we want to do. Travel is definitely one of the things I want to do more of before my time is up. As many of you do, I have a life list of destinations that I hope to visit for my own enjoyment and/or to research and write about for our readership. It’s one of the things I love most about my job. In most issues of Lifestyle Maga zine, we cover a destination of interest to our readership. See page 39 to read

Replacing an existing deck, this addition provides functional living space for the busy family, with ample storage and maximized seating in the great room. “Jessica and her husband wanted to have built-ins to store all the kids’ toys and books. Shelving with doors along the bottom give them storage space that the younger family members can access to put away their toys. The finishes are all kept very clean yet manageable for little children,” says Kay Habib of Skill Décor.

ABOVE This formal living room is the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary. The windows and archway were modified to update them, while the fireplace was replaced with a more efficient model. The addition of wainscotting to frame the fireplace and millwork around the archway amplify the room’s atmosphere of gracious living.

ith neighbourhoods named Old North and Old South, it’s not surprising to learn the city of London is full of century-old homes. Many of these residences were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s when builders could not anticipate how families would live in the 21st century. Ensuring those old homes still function for today’s families is the primary goal when it comes time to renovate. Jessica and her husband are busy professionals and the parents of two young children. Before moving into their heritage property on Wellington Street in Old North almost two years ago, they knew the house needed updating. “We wanted to maintain the character of the house but, at the same time, to also open it up and brighten it,” says Jessica. “We wanted something not super traditional, but also not super modern.”

Not entirely sure of her tastes, Jessica enlisted the help of Kay Habib, the owner of Skill Décor. To understand what her clients like, Habib conducts what she calls a “discovery session,” during which she asks questions ranging from what colours they prefer, to what TV shows they watch, and what hobbies they pursue. “This helps me learn their personalities,” says Habib. “From Jessica and her husband, I learned that with such busy lives, they preferred a living environment that was not complicated, a space with clean lines and little visual noise.” With the help of Habib, an architect, a renovation expert, and an architectural technologist, the homeowners agreed that if they were going to do the renovation properly now was the time. The gut job was underway. “It wasn’t part of the original plan to take the house down to the studs,” 

OPPOSITE PAGE TOP “This room is all about what you don’t see,” says Habib. She explains that the foyer’s tall closets framing the window bench are divided to store coats on the bottom and hats and mitts on top. The deep drawers in the window seat provide storage accessible to younger children. Habib’s custom-made pillow in navy fabric provide a colour pop to dress up the room. MIDDLE Providing ample room for a busy family to prepare meals and gather to enjoy them was the goal of remaking the kitchen. Located adjacent to the great room and opening on to the deck’s outdoor eating area, the kitchen is low-maintenance and efficient for a family, yet provides the ambiance and space needed for four-season entertaining. During the reno, a window was moved to provide a better view to the backyard. BOTTOM A light, bright space in subtle tones provides the calm, serene setting the homeowners wanted for the master bedroom. Built-in his and her closets were added and the ensuite was updated as part of the renovation. The room’s windows were enlarged and the one over the bed was raised to accommodate the headboard. Motorized window coverings enable the couple to choose the room’s light level at the touch of a button. ABOVE The dining room windows were enlarged, in addition wainscotting and new flooring were installed to upgrade the ambiance of this entertainment space. “The darker paint colour, carried all the way up to the tray ceiling, gives this room a formal look. The original custom artwork brings freshness to the space with its green tones,” says Habib.  March/April 2018

says Brian Schon of Alair Homes, the renovator overseeing the project. “But there were floors that needed to be levelled, knob-andtube wiring that needed removing and wooden support beams which needed replacing.” With open-concept living currently the choice of many families, “We had to configure the space to accommodate this way of living, carving out a space where life happens and tying together the kitchen, eating area and family room through natural light,” explains Brad Skinner of Skinner & Skinner Architects. “We introduced more light through French doors and windows above the doorframe in the newly added family room. These windows, which encase the room, capture the sun as it moves throughout the day.” While Skinner was able to provide two-dimensional drawings of the proposed plans, it was three-dimensional imagery which brought those drawings to life. “Builders say, ‘Imagine this.’ Designers say, ‘Here’s a swatch.’ I compile all the conceptualizations into three-dimensional imagery, which allows the homeowner to actually walk around a room,” says Wayne de Groot of D-Cubed Multimedia Group. “Not everyone can picture in their minds what the final product will look like. Three-dimensional imagery helps immensely with that.” With the family now firmly ensconced in their home, Jessica says the eight-month renovation was worth it. “I don’t feel like I’m living in a magazine, but it looks as nice as a magazine.” n

hether it’s a day for hitting a holein-one or tossing a bridal bouquet, the Dorchester Golf Club is a choice location. Surrounded by the winding Thames River, with its lush mature foliage, the course is a scenic oasis for a day on the links. It is also an ideal backdrop for a wedding celebration and photos, says 20 Lifestyle March/April 2018

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste John Crosby, sales representative with Royal LePage Triland Realty. Crosby has the 55-acre property – on the western outskirts of Dorchester, just five minutes east of Veteran's Memorial Highway – listed for sale at $1.299 million. The 18-hole regulation course, with challenging par 3, 4 and 5 holes and strategically placed mounds and bunkers, can be played in less than four hours. This makes for an ideal outing for the whole family. Its playability is appealing

to men and women, seniors and juniors, beginners and seasoned golfers, Crosby says. It is professionally maintained and irrigated and includes riverside views and water in play on nine of the holes. The course is anchored by a 5,000square-foot, two-level clubhouse, with kitchen, dining room and bar. This is a popular venue for wedding receptions, with its dance floor and bridal dressing lounge. The restaurant, licensed for 290 guests and featuring a wrap-around outdoor

The full commercial kitchen, pro shop and grounds maintenance equipment – plus 30 golf carts and 20 pull carts – are all included. “It’s a rare opportunity to live the dream, be the pro, to literally own the course,” he says. GALLERY CURATES COLLECTIONS By Janis Wallace

he only gallery with coastto-coast artist representation. The largest collection of contemporary Canadian ceramic art in the country. A mecca for collectors, curators and gallery directors. All of this is being celebrated at a Group Show April 6 for the 18th anniversary of Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery in downtown London. The 125 ceramic artists participating in the show have all exhibited in the past at the gallery. “We work hard to bring the top people with the best skills in ceramic art,” said Bancroft-Snell. “Most of them are senior artists, but we have artists in their 20s.” It’s a challenge shipping such fragile work across the country. “Maintaining a gallery of this size and this kind of inventory is quite something. The most remarkable thing that separates us from most galleries is the size of our gallery. It allows us to have a large collection. We have work that artists do to earn a living and we have major exhibition work.” Prices range from $20 to multiple thousands of dollars.

THEATRE 1. Based on the 1981 Academy Awardwinning movie, Chariots of Fire focuses on overcoming prejudice to pursue a dream in a turbulent environment. To bring the audience into the action, nearly 100 seats will be removed from the orchestra section to create a track more than 100 feet long. On stage, 36 bleacherstyle seats at two heights will provide a track-side perspective. Running between two rows of seating, the audience will feel the air move as actors dash past. This inventive piece runs from April 17 to May 5. www.grandtheatre.com 22 Lifestyle March/April 2018

Bancroft-Snell said a South African artist in her 90s schedules visits to her daughter in Toronto to coincide with openings at the London gallery. “People fly in from all over for an opening. People can’t believe it’s in London, Ontario. We’re definitely a destination.” The staff works with customers to educate and help them build collections. For example, Bancroft-Snell said if a high school student is interested in a collection of mugs from across Canada, they can introduce the novice collector to the top ceramic artists in the country. Clientele come from all walks of life and all ages. Openings can attract 75

It widens their social circle.” General manager and chief curator Brian Cooke shared his expertise in collectors and collections at the Tom Thomson Gallery in Owen Sound with an exhibit called Anatomy of a Collection. For anyone interested in seeing ceramic art at its best, the anniversary Group Show will feature the work of about 125 artists. n

Celebrating its 18th anniversary, as well the fact that it is the only gallery currently featuring artists from coast-to-coast and is showing the largest collection of Canadian ceramic art, the Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery will host a Group Show on April 6.

ACCORDING TO Jurenas and other hair experts, recent advancements in hair colour technology allow playful undercurrents of multidimensional colours and new effects such as matte and metallic finishes for both light and dark hair colours. TRENDY HAIR COLOURS run the spectrum from natural looking to edgy ice blonde, copper, magenta, red and rose tones, along with a slew of other pastel and bright hues. “HIGHLIGHTING with sheer tints of rose gold adds subtle, yet dramatic dimension to blonde and other hair colours. It is often placed at the roots for fresh impact,” notes Julie Carr, hairstylist and owner of Dragonfly Salon and Spa, in St. Thomas. HAYHOE HOMES A presentation centre, recently unveiled by Hayhoe Homes in phase three of its St. Thomas Orchard Park South community, features some distinctive highlights. The Carson is a farmhouse-inspired two-storey home, says design and marketing assistant Shale Holden. The two-storey great room, with vaulted ceiling, showcases a floor-to-ceiling stacked stone fireplace. In the adjacent kitchen, walnut accents on the island base and stove hood advance the farmhouse ambiance and provide contrast for the white-and-grey decor. The kitchen also features a deep farm-style sink and walk-in pantry. The main floor includes an expansive foyer, a front office/den and laundry/mudroom behind the two-car

garage. On the upper level, a comfy loft opens to three bedrooms and a main bathroom. The master suite features a generous walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom, which continues the farmhouse theme with dark wood cabinets and a custom tile shower with bench seat and walls resembling birch bark. The finished lower level includes a cozy recreation room, as well as a fourth bedroom and three-piece bathroom with shower. Ample storage space is built into this home in features such as storage benches in the mudroom and one bedroom, oversize closets and an expansive basement utility area.

GRAYSTONE HOMES The concept that good things come in small packages may well apply to a new condominium neighbourhood planned for Southwest London. The Eight at Warbler, a boutique condominium community that will include just eight custom homes, is being developed by Graystone Homes in Riverbend’s Warbler Woods, southeast of Oxford Street and Westdel Bourne. The homes will be one-floor, with the option of a loft and a minimum 2,000 square feet of living space. Each will be upscale and custom designed, with uniformity only in the exterior colours and materials – stone, stucco brick and shingles, says Graystone president Derek Anderson. They will be priced from the mid-$700s. A premier feature of the community, Anderson says, is the location, with five of the lots backing onto a wooded, environmentally-sensitive area that will never be developed. “That’s very attractive and what discerning purchasers are looking for in what is most likely their last home purchase,” he says. As vacant land condominiums, the purchasers will own the home and assume title of the lot but will enjoy maintenance-free living, with monthly condo fees covering such outdoor tasks as grass-cutting, snow removal and irrigation. The ultimate “lock and leave” lifestyle. Graystone is currently taking lot reservations while they work with potential clients on the designs. Occupancy is expected by fall of 2018.

WINTER IS TOO LONG AND WARMER CLIMES CALL By Jill Ellis-Worthington Photos by Ralph Lembcke

ross country and downhill skiing are great, as are hikes on winter days when the sun sparkles off the snow, but being active outdoors in southwestern Ontario means bundling up and braving the cold. When winter goes into overtime in March and April it’s tempting to call foul, shuck that heavy uniform and head south to enjoy some outdoor adventures in sunny, warm Mexico. Tom and Jo Anne Droog agree. The couple, who split their time between living in London, Alberta and Mexico, head south in November and often don’t come home until March. They reside on the Baja Peninsula, in a quieter village called San Jose del Cabo. “The weather is fantastic compared to Ontario at this time of year,” Tom (69) explains. “It’s usually 16C at night and 25C to 28C during the day in January. No toques, gloves or heavy winter jackets here,” he explains. Because they are located on the coast, Droog often takes vacationing visitors fishing on charter boats. “It costs around $100 per person and we recently caught a 65 pound tuna. It took four of us an hour to land it, lots of fun,” says Droog. Travel specialist Michelle Whalen, with Uniglobe Enterprise Travel Ltd., adds that whale watching and watching cliff divers are pursuits enjoyed at one of her favourite places to visit on the country’s west coast. Mazatlán was a favourite stop for cruise ships in the 1970s and is now again FOR MORE INFORMATION

emerging as a sought out destination. She says that a stop at the nearby village El Quelite is worthwhile. “Visiting this rural village with dirt roads, brightly coloured buildings and donkeys in the streets is a great way to get a sense of the country’s colonial history.” El Meson de Los Laureanos is a must-experience restaurant in the village, according to Whalen. “The food is amazing and the roosters and goats walking through the restaurant add to its authentic feel.” Whalen and her husband, George Devlugt, who are in their 50s, like to vacation in Mexico because of its cultural, historic and gastronomical offerings, in addition to getting a break from Ontario’s winter. Londoners Janet and Peter Christensen (66 and 70 respectively) have also been wintering on the Baja Peninsula for many years, in the village of La Ventana. They were attracted to the area because of its favourable breezes and Peter’s love of wind surfing. Janet explains that those seeking active fun love vacationing in the area and enjoy wind surfing, kite sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Trails have been developed through the desert and mountain biking and hiking are attracting more vacationers who love to be outdoors in the winter. Both the Christensens and Droogs comment on the affability of the local people, saying they feel safe though the country’s west coast has been spotlighted because of violent acts lately.

travelstyle LEFT Explore Mayan culture by touring the ruins at Tulum. When combined with zip lining or swimming in the underground caves, called cenotes, ‘extreme tours’ add an adventurous note to this historic exploration. INSET Reaffirm vows or enjoy a sunset toast at one of the many romantic areas at the Occidental at Xcaret or El Dorado resorts. BELOW Swim-up bars and shaded cabana beds beckon winter-weary Canadians at Mayan resorts, like the Occidental at Xcaret.

Janet sums it up: “Just like anywhere you travel, you have to be sensible.” She adds that the many vacationers seeking the abundant outdoor activities stay in resorts that are typically smaller than those in the Mayan Riviera on Mexico’s east coast. Just two miles from Playa del Carmen, the Hotel Occidental Xcaret is a large complex with over 700 rooms. Its size also offers variety. For instance, of the five pools, one is adults-only. This allows vacationers to curate their experience. It is located next to the Xcaret Ecological Park, with a wide range of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences for the whole family. From London International Airport, direct flights to Cancun allow Londoners to experience all-inclusive packages at more than 100 resorts in the Mayan Riviera, with chains like the Karisma Group, which offers adults-only resorts (El Dorado) and family resorts (Azul Fives). These resorts offer excursions that allow vacationers to experience new, warm weather adventures like sailing on catamarans, exploring underground caves, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, riding horses and zip lining. For those who want to be immersed in history, the temple ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum offer glimpses into the Mayan culture. The latter has one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. To get outdoors and get active – in water or on land – warm up to Mexico. n

This 74-year-old London woman was “thrilled and surprised” when she won a makeover sponsored by Salon Entrenous, Magari Fashions and Lifestyle Magazine in January. During one of their weekly dinners, granddaughters Lauren Avery, Alayna Avery and Rachel Cole announced that Waincott had won the contest in which they had secretly entered her. “She just teared up,” explains Lauren, who saw Salon Entrenous’ post on Instagram offering the makeover and got the ball rolling. “She’s a spectacular woman who does everything for the people in our family," Lauren says. "She helps elderly women she knows who live alone to get to their appointments. She volunteers at church. She rescues dogs. business casual attire for women who want an individual look. “We want to give people fresh ideas about fashion,” explains Mary. Staffers helped Waincott choose a black and tan patterned jacket by Cupcakes and Cashmere that Mary describes as “very versatile,” explaining that it can be worn inside during the coldest months or outdoors in spring and fall, while being paired with slacks, jeans or skirts. It was paired with an Uchuu sweater in black, with sleeve detailing to give it an individual look. The pants are leggings from Robert Kitchen. Suede boots from Dolce Vita with side zippers complete the look. Next was a stop at Salon Entrenous for a new hairstyle and makeup. Stylist Susie Dalgleish wanted to “soften Christine’s face shape with bangs – a wispy fringe – and colour that would warm up her skin tone and make her eyes pop. A warmer base with highlights around the face adds brightness.” She cut her hair in an asymmetrical bob that offers ease of maintenance while looking chic and contemporary. Makeup artist Stephanie Dritsoulas wanted to accentuate Waincott’s “good skin and make it look soft and dewy” while enhancing her features. To play up her eyes, false eyelashes were applied and Waincott’s eyebrows were tinted to darken them. “As we age, we can lose pigmentation in the eyebrows and this gives a real lift to the face that can take years off,” explains Dalgleish. Jim and Christine Waincott have been married for 35 years, and he (and the granddaughters) joined the final photo shoot at The London Club. He was admiring of his wife’s new look, saying “she looks beautiful but she always looks beautiful to me.” n

A good foundation Is key to looking your best at My Top Drawer

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

S

upport is a major factor in achieving success. When it comes to women wanting to look their best, they get that in a double dose at My Top Drawer. Supportive staff strive to ensure clients have the proper support from their foundation garments, including bras and shape wear items. “We do whatever we can to make women look their very best in whatever they’re wearing,” says David Robinson, who founded the specialty chain with his wife, Lisa, in 2001. The couple became aware of a need for quality lingerie in sizes that reflect real women through customers at their Simcoe hair salon, where a common topic was the need for quality intimate apparel.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

44 Lifestyle March/April 2018

“People were travelling all over to find good quality lingerie in a proper fit,” Robinson says. The Robinsons set out to learn skills for fitting bras. That meant a steep learning curve involving courses and sourcing information from suppliers. They opened their first store in Simcoe. Since then, the enterprise has grown to four locations, including Burlington and Niagara Falls. The one in London is located in the Wellington Southdale Shopping Centre in the White Oaks neighbourhood. Robinson says the belief that a woman is one set bra size is a myth. “Every person is likely to be comfortable in more than one size.” In fact, the fit varies depending on the brand and style.

Located on Wellington Road South, My Top Drawer carries many brands of bras, shape wear, swimwear and lingerie in a wide variety of sizes.

My Top Drawer offers a variety of bra styles, including seamless, strapless, push-up, sports, as well as nursing and mastectomy products. Band sizes range from 28 to 54 and cup sizes from A to M. The stores carry an extensive inventory of swimwear and shape wear. He describes foundation garments as an exploding market, including everything from corsets and body suits to slips and camisoles. They are all designed to comfortably smooth, shape, support and enhance the figure. They also carry some sleepwear and lounge wear and a number of products for men. The company recently launched an online shopping service, which Robinson says is ideal for women who have been fitted, know their size and need to reorder. n

2018 PORSCHE MACAN S

Totally redesigned RDX raises the bar for entry-level luxury SUVs

Porsche’s Macan SUV flaunts its sports car roots

Porsche describes its Macan as the first compact sport-utility vehicle that’s also a sports car – and it’s difficult to challenge that statement. Without question, it’s the quickest and best handling compact SUV on the market, traits that trace directly to its Porsche heritage. Based on the Audi Q5 platform, the Macan S comes with a 340-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine that can launch this five-passenger compact luxury SUV to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds – or 5.2 seconds if it’s fitted with the Sport Chrono package (which includes launch control), while its handling characteristics can be compared to a premium sports sedan. Active all-wheel drive is standard, as is the Porsche seven-speed PDK doubleclutch transmission. The suspension system is calibrated more for winding roads than beating through the bushes, but the Macan is still quite capable when the asphalt or concrete ends and dirt and gravel surfaces begin. The list of standard equipment also includes a multi-function sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, 19-inch wheels, a high-performance audio system and an electrically operated tailgate. The list of optional equipment includes air suspension and Torque Vectoring Plus. For 2018, the Macan gets a new cabin air filter and an updated instrument cluster display that shows cabin air circulation. 

AT A GLANCE Price: $61,400 Powertrain: 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6; seven-speed PDK automatic transmission with paddle shifters; all-wheel drive Power/torque: 340 hp/339 lb.-ft. Fuel consumption L/100 km: City, 13.7; highway, 10.4; combined, 12.2 Fuel: Premium unleaded

The 2019 Acura RDX, which made its debut as the RDX Prototype at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, has undergone a total redesign and when it goes on sale in mid-2018 this five-passenger SUV will offer exhilarating performance, class-leading cabin and cargo space, and a host of groundbreaking new Acura technologies that will set a new standard in the entry-level luxury SUV segment. In addition, the new RDX will be the first Acura SUV offered with an A-Spec trim, adding sport styling inside and out. The all-new, third-generation RDX has been re-engineered on a new platform that’s exclusive to Acura. It features a lighter and dramatically stiffened body, a sophisticated chassis and a new powertrain – a powerful, yet fuel-efficient 2.0-litre DOHC VTEC turbo engine mated to a segment-first 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2019 model also marks the return of the Acura Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system to the RDX. It’s the most advanced form of the system, giving the RDX the most sophisticated and capable torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system in its class and features a newly developed rear differential with a 40 per cent increase in maximum torque capacity, compared to the outgoing RDX.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC 350E 4MATIC Hybrid powertrain gives mid-size GLC 350e boost in power, efficiency

AT A GLANCE Price: TBA Powertrain: 2.0-litre turbocharged DOHC four-cylinder with direct injection, 16 valves, VTEC and dual variable timing cam; ten-speed automatic transmission Power/torque: TBA Fuel consumption L/100 km: Not available Fuel: Not available

If you are a consumer looking for the luxury and flexibility of a premium mid-size SUV, Mercedes-Benz has a new vehicle you should check out. It is the 2018 GLC 350e and, in addition to all the comfort, convenience and top-notch trimmings you’d expect from Mercedes-Benz, it is also the first mid-size SUV in the brand’s history to include plug-in hybrid technology. The new GLC 350e - which comes standard with Mercedes’ 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive – combines a turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor powered by a compact lithium-ion battery, to deliver power, refinement and exceptional fuel efficiency. The battery is recharged while driving by energy recuperation, so the GLC 350e is capable of being driven up to 34 kilometres on the electric power alone, making it ideal (and emissions-free) for urban use. When longer trips are required, the four-cylinder gas engine contributes, giving the driver a combined output of 315 horsepower and a combined torque of 413 lb-ft. Both are new standards in the segment. In addition, by engaging the EQ Boost function, extra power is available for outstanding acceleration. Sporty G70 sedan promises world-class driving experience

The Cadillac XT5 luxury crossover, launched in mid-2016, has quickly become one of the best-selling vehicles in its segment, combining spacious luxury and high-tech convenience features. For 2018, those features include a rear camera mirror, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibilities, autoheated steering wheel and additional USB outlets in the front and rear seats to augment its connectivity capabilities. The XT5’s mobile friendliness is also evident with storage space for phones and tablets in the centre console and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. One of the key features of the XT5 is its lightweight structure, designed specifically to improve fuel economy, driving dynamics and interior space. However, although the XT5 is lighter, there are no compromises in body rigidity or crash performance. The 2018 XT5 is powered by the same 310-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 engine that debuted in the 2017 ATS and CTS sport sedans, and is currently used in the CT6. It features cylinder deactivation technology, which allows the engine to seamlessly switch to a fuel-saving four-cylinder mode under low or moderate loads, and stop/start technology that automatically stops and restarts the engine when the vehicle is at rest in traffic, saving fuel and reducing emissions. 

hat started as a shuttle service for the Grand Bend restaurant Smackwater Jack’s has evolved into an attraction that is bringing scores of new tourists to Huron and Lambton counties. Tour The Shore, launched last summer by Smackwater Jack’s owner Brad Oke, capitalizes on a wine and beer trail that has been developed along the Lake Huron shore. In that, he saw an opportunity to use his shuttle vehicles to bring in tourists and to give cottagers something new, the opportunity to become a local for a day, discovering destinations and supporting area businesses. “We have a brand new state-of-theart winery called Dark Horse Estate Winery (Grand Bend). We have a

destination brewery called Cowbell Brewing Co. (Blyth). Those are my anchors,” Oke says. With the addition of 10 other breweries and three other wineries, a distillery and a cider house, Oke knew that a luxe tour experience was possible. “About 50 to 60 per cent of those people come back to the restaurant for dinner. So the synergy has been amazing.” He says the tours were an instant hit and went viral, sometimes running as many as 10 a day. They cover areas to the north and south of the Grand Bend starting point. There are full-day tours, including five destinations and dinner at Smackwater Jack’s, and half-day tours with three destinations and a picnic lunch. Cost includes tastings and lunch or dinner.

Tour The Shore will pick up its clients from their homes or cottages and will even go to communities as far afield as Sarnia or Woodstock, although there’s an extra per-kilometre charge for those. Still, says Oke, it eliminates the problems of limited parking at the restaurant and getting behind the wheel after a day of beer and wine tasting. Oke is expanding the tours. In January, he launched London Libations, a tour through several new breweries, wineries and a soon-to-open distillery in London’s Old East Village. As the centerpiece, he unveiled the PedalPub, a giant bicycle that holds 16 people, as the venue-to-venue transportation. This spring he plans to expand into Perth County with a Stratfordbased tour. n

RENO BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO LAMBTON HERITAGE MUSEUM By Kathy Rumleski

W

hile the first major renovations in 25 years at Lambton Heritage Museum included modernizing the building and its electrical and mechanical systems, visitors now have the opportunity to peek into the 25,000-piece collection. That’s what has Laurie Webb, museum curator-supervisor, most excited about the changes. She and other staff members have endured more than three months of work but are now showing off the results of the $435,000 upgrade in time for the museum’s 40th anniversary. “The collection is growing so much, and we were rapidly running out of space. We’re now going to allow the public to see it, which will be fun,” she says. “We’re hoping it will be part of our regular offering.” With this renovation, the museum has also planned for future growth and anticipated new artifacts. Webb says the updated heating and cooling system will also protect those precious pieces of Lambton County history.

“We like to have regulated temperature and humidity to help preserve the artifacts…for future generations.” She says there will also be more exhibit space since the offices have been moved to the back of the building. Visitors will enjoy a patio area, courtyard and banners that will depict historic images of the different municipalities across the county. “I’m hoping when the public comes to see the museum that they will be excited to see the modernization changes. I think they will be quite pleased,” Webb says. “Hopefully we can build on this in the coming years. I think it will be the start of some good transformations at the museum.” The museum is now getting set for its annual Return of the Swans Festival during March Break. “We’re hoping the (tundra) swans cooperate and actually come then. They were here in January last year.” Educational programming, children’s activities and a video are all part of the festival offerings. b

A GREENER FUTURE Greenhouse Academy is sowing seeds of sustainability

ustainability – for both the environment and employment opportunities for future generations – is at the heart of The Greenhouse Academy. The innovative program, launched last summer in a 60,000-square-foot greenhouse in Thorndale, is training students from across the region in all aspects of managing a greenhouse business. “We work cooperatively with educators, social and conservation agencies to grow, market and sell environmental products,” says program founder Jeff Crosby. in Thorndale in 2015 had the idea of establishing a program to help students gain real world learning experiences outside the classroom. The students are bused to the greenhouse and introduced to entrepreneurship, financial literacy, team building, marketing, sales, clientemployer interactions and the daily routines of successful production. “We work with students from grades 1 through 12 and present workforce challenges and set attainable goals throughout a day’s work,” Crosby explains. Secondary school students are introduced to all aspects of the business and also work with elementary

students, teaching them about soil and planting and overseeing related craft activities. As they’re learning, the students are also supporting reforestation in the region. “We’re growing native plant materials. It’s an environmentallyfriendly way to support the reforestation industry,” Crosby says. Reforestation is a constant need, he says. For example, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority reports that it has 400 acres that have been devastated by lack of reforestation. “I don’t think there’s anything better than having students in 

our school system experience this introduction to how the workforce operates and, at the same time, work to solve reforestation issues,” he says. In their first season, more than 2,000 students worked at the greenhouse, planting sapling trees. Future plantings will be sold to raise funds for running the greenhouse, busing the students and providing them with a daily lunch. In future seasons, they also plan to explore growing fruits and vegetables that can be donated to area food banks or other community programs. Crosby says the trees will be available for sale to anyone from homeowners to conservation authorities and he’s actively seeking buyers. A partnership is being forged, for example, with the Highway of Heroes, that includes an initiative to plant 117,000 trees along Highway 401 to commemorate fallen soldiers. He and his student workers are also seeking other partnerships. Junior Achievement Canada has already jumped onboard, with its shared passion for introducing young minds to the workforce and entrepreneurship. They’re also looking for new grow contracts, such as with landscape rejuvenation projects or tree planting companies, with the production season fast approaching. n FOR MORE INFORMATION

A TREE TO KEEP CLC TREE SERVICES PRESERVES OUR URBAN FORESTS For three decades the staff at CLC Tree Services have been utilizing their passion for trees to protect the urban forests of London and surrounding communities. Started in 1988 with stump removals, the company has expanded over the years to offer a variety of tree services. The most common, particularly for residential clients, are trimming, planting and removal, says Calvin McCallum, co-owner and operations manager.

AWARD WINNING DESIGN Family owned and operated firm dedicated to building distinctive, high-quality homes with a reputation for attention to detail from start to completion.

However, CLC also provides disease diagnosis, pest control, cabling and bracing support and advice on plant health care. The latter is a proactive approach that helps preserve mature trees, which can take a lifetime to replace, McCallum says. He notes that often, calls from homeowners come after they’ve noticed a problem, requiring a reactive treatment that can be costlier and less successful. McCallum and his colleagues strive to educate the public about proactive measures, like fertilization, to keep the urban forest growing and healthy. FOR MORE INFORMATION

or more than a quarter century, homeowners in the London region, who are in need of windows or doors or wanting to update their home’s exterior with new siding, have been turning to Homecastle Windows and Doors. The company has been operating out of its location on First Street since 1991, growing each year thanks in large part to repeat business and referrals. By 2017, that growth resulted in the launch of a new and expanded showroom. ith the arrival of spring weather, April feels like “a time of rebirth,” says Rob Lumsden, show manager for the Western Fair District’s Home and Outdoor Show. “Outside everything’s getting fresh and green. Everyone’s getting that spark of energy. And it’s not always related to outdoors,” he says. From backyard landscaping to changing the appearance of a kitchen or bathroom, hundreds of exhibitors at the Metroland Media Agriplex April 13 to15 will have products and ideas to effect transformations. “It’s a one-stop creation station,” Lumsden says. “So many ideas from so many experts under one roof.” Special guests adding to that expertise include contractor/designer Brian McCourt and design expert Sarah Keenleyside, from HGTV’s Backyard Builds, and interior design consultant Gillian Somers, owner of Toronto’s Reality Interiors. Local experts will also take their turns on stage, offering tips and advice. “While the special guests are important to show-goers, the exhibitors are definitely ‘stars’ in their own right,” Lumsden says. For them the show is a welcome platform to meet one-on-one with potential customers. “We’ve been doing it for years and it does generate business,” says Dennis Becker, co-partner with John King in London’s Gliding Shelf Solutions dealership, an Ontario-based company that builds and installs custom shelves to glide in and out of existing cabinets. “We can measure how much business we get out of the show. We get enough leads that turn into honest-to-goodness orders that it’s very worthwhile.” 

Our product line can be applied in kitchen and bathroom cabinets, pantries, armoires, linen closets, and any piece of furniture that can benefit from a gliding shelf solution.

HOME AND OUTDOOR SHOW ~ Continued from page 63 It’s also a perfect start to the busy summer season, says Joe Malec, owner of London Eco Metal Manufacturing, supplier of steel and aluminum roofing. Roofing jobs do happen during winter months, but they are generally smaller projects. “The show starts the spring and summer season,” Malec says. “Every year we have different colours and new ideas and it’s a first step, a reawakening.” This is the second year that the Western Fair District has managed the spring lifestyle show. Lumsden says the organizers listened to feedback from last year’s attendees and have instituted some changes. A new exhibit area called FLAIR (Furniture, Lifestyle, Arts, Interior, Remodelling) will showcase how subtle décor elements can uniquely change the atmosphere of any space, indoor or out. There was also an expressed desire for an expanded outdoor exhibit area. “We’re looking at that and also introducing a landscaped outdoor oasis, put together by some local businesses,” he says. The outdoor display area will feature myriad ways for residents to extend their living spaces. “Outdoor living has become a huge trend,” says Sean Kaczmarek, from Copp’s Buildall. “This will be our fourth appearance at the spring show and we have built an outdoor living space at each one. It really gives people a good vision of how the new space will look and feel.” This year Copp’s will display a composite deck, an outdoor kitchen and a patio with a cabana. It will also showcase a new technology, Cool Deck from Moisture Shield, which reduces the deck surface temperature by 20 to30 per cent. London’s Form A Fence – specializing in low-maintenance decks, fences, patio covers, gazebos and railings, is also introducing a new brand at the show. Fabulis, an all-Canadian product, is a solid PVC deck board, available in custom colours and carrying a 25-year warranty, says company owner Ruud Terpstra. “We do high-end installed products and have been exhibiting them at the show for 30 years,” Terpstra says. “People want to meet one-on-one so the show is important for us.” n FOR MORE INFORMATION
