reviously in this space, you’ve read about my recent bent toward minimalism and the thirst for owning less and having more space, time and energy. Having downsized from a home in Old South to an apartment downtown, I was able to understand the feelings of the folks I interviewed for our story on page nine.

One of the many benefits of downsizing to a low-maintenance lifestyle is being able to travel and take time for daytrips on days that would have previously been spent doing yard work or cleaning windows.

An early spring day full of hope and energy can now be spent exploring Ontario’s roadways, walking trails and villages.

One of the best close-to-home jaunts I’ve experienced is a visit to Stratford, great any time for food or theatre but especially fun when it’s time for the Parade of Swans in early April. I’m a sunshine-and-summer person, so seeing these symbols of the Festival City waddle from their winter quarters behind the William Allman Memorial Arena, near the Tom Patterson Theatre, down Lakeside Drive and into the Avon River is a real ray of hope for me.

There’s so much swan-involved fun that you can experience during swan weekend in Stratford. The parade itself is on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m., when the swans are led to their water embarkation by the Stratford Police Pipes and Drums Band. Get there early to get a good spot and so you don’t miss the pre-parade festivities and hoopla.

Swans are everywhere on this weekend, decorating the streets of downtown and in the boutiques lining Ontario Street, with swan-inspired goods available.

Boosting the fun factor are the carriage rides and street performers along downtown streets.

Don’t miss a stop into Junction 56 Distillery to try their new Mint Smoothie Liqueur,

formulated in conjunction with another Stratford favourite, Rheo Thompson Candies. Around the corner is the newest craft brewer for the area, Job Site Brewing.

If you’re stretching it to a weekend getaway, staying downtown at Mercer Hall is a good move. With excellent dining, drink and live music, it’s a bonus that some rooms in this boutique inn overlook the Avon River.

he kids are grown and are embarking on adult life, so the house is big and the yard can be a lot to maintain when you want to be on the golf course or an airplane.

As cliché as this sounds it’s a situation record numbers of boomers are in. A survey of 1,000 Ontarians last summer revealed half are considering downsizing.

Dave Staines, 55, and Rebecca Herrington, 60, decided to move from their family home in Dorchester to the RiverBend Golf Community 18 months ago. With their sons in university and wanting a home that readily adapts to their active lifestyle, the couple decided that purchasing a condo in this golf community was the perfect choice.  March/April 2019

Whether the second act entails living in a culturally rich urban environment or quiet condo community, downsizing can free up time, money and energy to allow space to pursue new goals and dreams.

TOP A lush setting on the city’s edge, RiverBend is a vacant-land condominium development that features an 18-hole golf course as one of its amenities. This meshes with the active life sought by many of its residents, who want a low-maintenance, turnkey home.

ABOVE LEFT A popular feature for many homeowners at RiverBend is the special golf cart port built into the two-car garages of the homes. Those who don’t golf often use it as a workshop space or extra storage, according to Sharon Riopelle.

“We are very active,” explains Staines, “and use the indoor gym and indoor swimming pool year round. We like the fitness classes and walking on the Kains Woods Trail that is accessible from RiverBend.” The duo spends a couple of months each winter in Florida, so the low maintenance, turnkey character of a 50-plus community appealed.

Sharon Riopelle, sales consultant for Sifton Properties at RiverBend, confirms that this is the demographic and lifestyle for most of its residents. “Some of our buyers are working couples, others are early retirees. Some are doing a downsize and looking for a certain type of lifestyle,” she says of the homeowners living

in this 400-acre gated community that is adjacent to an 18-hole golf course.

There will be 450 homes, 390 of which are already sold, constructed by the time RiverBend is completed in the next few years. There are 10 different floor plans for the detached one-floor condominiums, ranging from 1,800 square feet to 2,500 square feet. Villas are clusters of attached homes.

One aspect that Staines and Herrington enjoy is the social interaction of RiverBend.

“Neighbours will email and say they are going to the clubhouse for dinner and there was Christmas caroling along the streets during the holidays. You’ll see clusters of people chatting by the

mailboxes. It’s much more social than the suburban type of neighborhood we lived in before,” he illustrates.

He also appreciates that neighbours are allowed to make changes to their yards unlike most condo situations.

“They allow you to expand your exterior space, as long as its friendly to the deer and the plants are noninvasive,” explains Staines.

When Robert Gwaichmai and Susan Prince (both in their 60s) decided to sell their rural property outside of Toronto and move to London, they were seeking a more urban setting and wanted to live downtown. They moved into Tricar’s Azure in November of 2018 and love 

MOVING FROM A HOME TO A CONDO or an apartment can be overwhelming, especially when trying to decide which items deserve to go with you into your new life. Professional organizer and downsizing specialist Tammy Hergott, of Do Right and Done, recommends the following steps for decluttering for a move.

DO realistically determine the size of the space that you’re moving to with respect to the size of the space you’re leaving. This will tell you how much you need to get rid of. She says that many clients underestimate the amount that needs to be shed to facilitate easy transition to a new space and new life.

DON’T try to do it all in one day. Hergott schedules sessions that are a maximum of four hours in length with clients, otherwise fatigue will set in. “You’ll get emotionally tired and one of two things happen: you’ll keep everything because you’re feeling pushed or you’ll be frustrated so you’ll get rid of everything and may have regrets later.”

DO keep in mind that if you’re downsizing in anticipation of a change in lifestyle that you are shedding things that don’t enhance your new persona or your new style.

DON’T go in without a plan. Hergott recommends the following process. Ask yourself ‘Does it bring me absolute joy?’ If the answer is no, donate it or throw it away. If the answer is yes, ask a second question: ‘Does it have a purpose in my new life?’

This helps weed out the purely ornamental and accumulated knickknacks. If the answer is yes but you have several of the same type of item, perhaps keeping one or two will suffice. You can gift the remainder to a family member who will value it.

“Keeping things in the family or with friends often gives comfort,” says Hergott. Last question: ‘Do I have room for it?’ If the answer to this is also yes, then perhaps this item deserves to make the move to your smaller space.

DO work with a professional or acquaintance to help you sift through it. Hergott explains, “Emotionally detaching from it is easier when a third party comes in.”

MIDDLE One popular feature on the 29th floor is the golf simulator that allows homeowners to exercise and work on their swing year round when inclement weather prevents them from getting out on the course.

BOTTOM The Madison model is a two-plus den unit with 1,615 square feet of living space. This one is located on the 12th floor of Azure. With open concept living, homeowners can cook and enjoy the view at the same time.

DON’T look twice at items you’ve decided to cut.

Place them in garbage bags or donation boxes and take them out of your home right away.

DO give your adult children a deadline to come and pick up belongings that they want. Indefinitely storing them in the old bedroom won’t work when you’re selling the house and starting a new life.

DON’T wait to start the decluttering process. “As soon as you’ve decided to sell, start decluttering. It helps with staging your home as well as prepping for your move,” says Hergott. “The process often takes longer than people anticipate.”

“There’s a variety of cultural things to attend and lots of restaurants because we’re a block away from Richmond row. We’ve been to Budweiser Gardens for a concert, to the Grand Theatre and to the movies at Citi Plaza; we walk to the (Covent Garden) Market for a coffee and to buy groceries on the weekends.”

The couple chose London because Gwaichmai grew up here and still has family here. Seeking the urban vibe, they also considered Toronto, London (England) and New York City. “We knew we’d be right downtown because we want to enjoy culture without having to drive an hour and without paying to park our vehicle,” he says.

Purchasing a condominium in the Azure building fit the bill with its location and amenities. They both use the gym several times each week and are planning to use the golf simulator – both features of the 29th floor’s public space.

Frank Clarke, of Oliver and Associates Real Estate, who, with Kim Toonk of Oliver and Associates Cornerstone Real Estate, is the sales representative for Azure, says that the amenities on the 29th floor, along with its views, are one of the biggest appeals to boomers who are craving a downsized upscale lifestyle. Of the 198 units in the building only five are still on the market.

They range in price from $446,000 to $899,900, the latter representing the price for a penthouse on the 28th floor.

“The 29th floor has the gym and golf simulator for indoor exercise but also a lounge with a television. I’ve seen five gentlemen who don’t know each other in there watching a hockey game,” he says of the social aspect. In the summer months, a large terrace area on this floor gives residents some of the best views in the city. “Outside there’s lots of seating, trees, barbecues and a fire pit,” says Clarke.

PLANNING for perfection

I

f you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

This old adage is true of many aspects in life and none more so than undertaking a garden overhaul. However the planning process looks different depending on the landscaping professional and the size of the project.

When Bill Anderson and Purveen Skinner wanted to overhaul the yard of their Mount Brydges home last summer, they got quotes from four different companies and checked out their work. Looking for a “welcoming, natural, holistic feel” to the front and back yards and desiring a pool installation, they went with John C. Young Design to execute the big project. “We thought about it for two years and did a lot of homework,” says Anderson. “We talked to suppliers, went to home shows, did online investigations and were in and out of nurseries,” he adds explaining the process of getting ready to expend several months of time and energy, as well as a sizeable budget to get what they wanted.

Anderson and Skinner were attracted to Young’s style of implementing natural, graceful spaces but also were pleased that he could deliver the complete project, from planning to implementation, as well as the low-maintenance fibreglass pool they wanted.

“Earlier is always better,” says John Young, of the planning process. “People want to enjoy the short summers we have.”

He says starting out with a personal vision of what you want and goals for the area are vital to a satisfactory outcome.

Outdoor renovations are much like indoor ones: start with removing the old and unwanted (overgrown plantings and decrepit hardscape), redo the infrastructure (water, hydro), install new surfaces (pool, deck, patio, shelters, flowerbed structures), add decorative flourishes (new plantings, outdoor furniture, lighting).

Just as with indoor renovations, Chris Edwards, of Edwards and Sons Complete Property Maintenance Inc., says that researching potential companies is key. 

Because ground water was discovered, a platform was built to hold the pool structure. The pool – measuring 32 feet by 18 feet – was inserted in the hole.

The natural looking landscape was continued from the front and side yards, providing important visual privacy barriers for the yard. A fence and wooden timber privacy panels were added. An existing shed had a pergola added and was converted to become the pool house. 

They wanted an easy-to-care-for, natural-looking yard so some of the existing plantings were removed and large stones and boulders were moved to better locations to begin the process.

He also cautions that the size of your budget will determine the scope of the work. “Manage your expectations,” he says. “Many customers have elaborate ideas but the budget doesn’t match.” Doing the work in stages over a few years can mitigate strain on nerves and wallet.

Managing expectations extends to thinking realistically about the size and work involved in a project, especially for DIYers. Ripping out and disposing of sod and old plantings, installing wiring for new lighting, obtaining machinery to do the project can be daunting for weekend warriors who undertake large projects.

Edwards’ clients Bruce and Karen Sworik were two homeowners who knew they needed help when rehabilitating the landscaping around the century-and-ahalf old farm house they purchased near Thorndale. Their previous Old North home had more sculptured gardens, so they wanted this large yard space and pool area to have a more natural look and be easier to maintain. “It gets very dry in the summer and we have a lot of wind out here,” explains Karen Sworik.

the first step undertaken in the first year of work on the property. The rocks – some the size of boulders – were gathered and arranged around the driveway area, according to Karen.

The following summer, trees were planted along the property line, landscaping was established around the house and pool and a bubbling rock was installed. The latter is a favourite feature of the couple. “We didn’t want the upkeep of another pond so this was a nice way to have a water feature,” she says.

The Sworiks felt comfortable with Edwards and Sons’ interactive and collaborative planning style. They had ideas that were discussed and elaborated on by the landscapers.

To ensure that his team and the homeowners are on track during a project, Chris Edwards suggests the following: “We get as much in writing up front as possible so that we make sure we’re on the same page. We touch base at the end of each day to make sure they are happy since many homeowners make changes to the plan after a day or two and seeing its development. Third, we often take the homeowner to the nursery so they can see the plants before putting them in the ground. Communication is the most important thing.” n

THE RIVERS OF THE FAR EAST OFFER FOOD AND FUN

W

hile many people have been on huge cruise ships traversing an ocean, a river cruise is a much different way to travel, especially to Southeast Asia. Doug Ellison, president and CEO of Ellison Travel & Tours, says these days the public is searching for more of an adventure, as well as a connection to some of the faraway lands they are visiting.

A river cruise to the Far East will satisfy both wishes. “The river cruises in this part of the world are quite different from what you would see on a European river cruise,” Ellison says. “The homes, vegetation, temples and accommodations are a whole different experience entirely.”

Two waterways that will make a huge impression on travellers are the 4.300kilometre Mekong River that will take you through Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Irrawaddy River that flows through Myanmar and has culturally diverse populations living along its banks.

A river cruise will allow you to see and interact with some of the people living along the rivers, including farmers, fishers and shop owners selling wares at floating markets. It’s estimated that 70 24 Lifestyle March/April 2019

“There are sections (of the Mekong) that are incredibly lush and very vibrant.

At the same time, there are tiny towns and big cities,” says Gail Ducharme, vacation department manager at Ellison Travel. “There are lots of villages that seem untouched and like you’re stepping back in time. It’s incredibly interesting.”

Southwestern Ontario travel specialist Michelle Whalen says a cruise along the Mekong should include a stop at Angkor, a key archeological site in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Whalen says Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Empire and has the famous temples of Angkor Wat and at Angkor Thom is the sculpturally decorated Bayon Temple.

Along the Irrawaddy, she says you’ll want to see the Pyu Ancient Cities, which provide the earliest testimony of the introduction of Buddhism into Southeast Asia. Also a UNESCO site, the cities date back to 200 BC. “That’s mind-blowing when you think of it and humbling.

A river cruise will immerse the traveller into all that a region has to offer, says Ellison. “When you start going into Asia on river cruises, it’s more like a history tour or a cultural experience. You really do want to get off the boat and see something every day.”

Ducharme agrees that experiencing history is a key element in a river cruise.

going for that reason, it’s such an important part of the history of that country,” she says. “When you do stop, you’ll hear stories and see evidence and some people still talk about the Vietnam War.” While the eyes and ears will be stimulated, there is also much to delight one’s sense of taste.

Whalen says Southeast Asia will definitely appeal to foodies. She recommends pho in Cambodia, which is a soup or broth made of chicken or beef. In Thailand, try sticky rice and pad ga pao (you’ll find several spelling variations), a spicy chicken stir fry with basil. “All of these countries have so many awesome dishes and spices it’s hard to narrow it down to one or two,” Whalen says. “Some of the world’s best street food culture comes from Asia.”

The best time to travel the Mekong is November to February, while the recommendation for cruising the Irrawaddy is from September to April.

Whalen says some may want to try to book online to cut costs, but this isn’t the type of trip to do that. She recommends talking to a trusted adviser.

Ellison says that while river cruises can be a bit more expensive, the daily excursions are included, which isn’t the case with many bigger cruises. “In some cases, you can pay almost as much for your excursions if you do them on a daily basis as you did for the cruise itself.”

He notes the river cruise ships are small and you may be cruising with fewer than 100 people.

“It is very intimate. You get to know the crew and the other people there.

O

ne of the first things you’ll notice about Jeffrey “Red” George is colour. It’s in his name. It’s in his beard. And it abounds in his artwork.

Nicknamed “Red Dog” by his uncle as a youngster, Jeffrey George is an Ojibway artist from the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, about an hour’s drive northwest of London.

George’s struggle with addiction led him to picking up a paint brush for the first time 18 years ago. “I was in a treatment centre. I painted on a deer hide – a long winding road through mountains and the image of a young man,” said George. “For me, that was the start of my healing journey.”

Clean and sober for many years now, George has continued to hone his craft, finding inspiration in nature and his culture. “Indigenous people, we are tied to the land. Nature gave me the strength to overcome my addictions. I live in a colourful world. The colours in my work reflect inner strength, the inner spirit.”

As with a lot of Indigenous artists, animals have a large presence in George’s work – turtles, eagles, bears, wolves. “I take a real liking to the bear and wolf,” added George. “They give me courage.”

“This story is a testament to how art can heal,” said Teresa Marie, coordinator of Paint Ontario, an annual art show at the Lambton Heritage Museum where

George shows his work. “Art really did save Red. He poured himself into taking simple symbolism and morphing it into his own personal stories.”

George is now sharing his story and his passion for painting with others.

He holds paint jams at the Port Franks Community Centre every month, teaching others how to tap into their own creative journey. His work is on display at the Sunset Arts Gallery in Grand Bend and at Gallery Indigena in Stratford. His dreams include conducting

workshops with remote northern First Nations communities where struggles with addictions are widespread. “Art is therapy. Colour is therapy. I listen to the spirit of creativity. It helped me find my true path. I’d like to now help others find theirs.” n

The 2019 TLX A-Spec Package amps up the sedan’s sporty character with exclusive design elements and enhancements to its chassis tuning and wheel/tire specifications. Up front, A-Spec models are fitted with a matte-black diamond grille with dark chrome surround, an aggressive lower front fascia, round LED fog lights and darkened Jewel Eye LED headlight covers. The wheels are an exclusive 19-inch alloy design fitted with Michelin Primacy 245/40R19 tires. All TLX A-Spec models benefit from a retuned electric power steering system and damper settings, while models equipped with SH-AWD also get a quicker steering ratio and a stiffer spring rate and rear stabilizer bar for improved body control.

The TLX A-Spec packages are available on SH-AWD models and, exclusively to Canada, on the four-cylinder P-AWS grades as well.

The launch of the 12th generation of Toyota’s highly successful Corolla – more than 45 million have been sold globally since its introduction in 1966 – began last year with the introduction of the Corolla Hatchback. Now the all-new Sedan, Corolla’s best-selling body style, makes its debut. It’s based on the Toyota New Global Architecture, which brings together new approaches to engineering, design, assembly and materials, while bolstering the model’s renowned value and reliability.

From behind the steering wheel, the sedan feels quite different. The driver’s hip point is positioned 25 mm lower and 40 mm further rearward, resulting in a driving position that not only improves comfort, but also helps to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity and improves front/rear weight distribution. The cabin is noticeably quieter, thanks to revised drivetrain efficiencies plus expanded use of sound-absorbing materials.

Safety continues to be a priority, with all 2020 Corollas equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an advanced suite of integrated active and pre-collision features.

The 2020 Corolla lineup also includes a new high-efficiency hybrid sedan. The Corolla Hybrid is expected to have a combined fuel consumption of less than 5.0L / 100 km, making it the most fuel-efficient Corolla ever offered.

The Genesis G70 compact luxury sport sedan, named Motor Trend’s 2019 Car of the Year, is available in six variations, ranging from the well-equipped 2.0T Advanced to the range-topping 3.3T Sport that encompasses all the model’s available luxury and highperformance features.

Athletic elegance is represented in the exterior design, while the driver-focused interior features quality materials with excellent fit and finish.

Two engines are offered, depending on the model – a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6. The G70 2.0T models come equipped with the Theta-II 2.0-litre engine, while drivers seeking greater performance can opt for the Lambda II twin-turbo V6. With an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, the 3.3T Sport offers ferocious acceleration and a top speed of 270 km/h. All G70 models feature a launch control system.

Engine output for all models is routed through a standard, rear-biased, all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the optional 2.0T Sport package. It gets a sixspeed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

The Aviator is a new entry in the Lincoln lineup that promises to elevate luxury to a new high in the premium mid-size utility vehicle segment. The Aviator slots in between the top-of-the-line Navigator and the midsize Nautilus. Unlike the Nautilus, however, the Aviator offers third-row seating.

The 2020 Aviator will be offered in two trim levels and standard all-wheel-drive when it arrives in Canadian showrooms this summer – Select and Reserve. Later in the year an additional model, the Grand Touring plug-in hybrid, will join the lineup. The luxuriously-appointed cabin is roomy, with plenty of people space in all three rows of seating, while the cargo area, including a large bin below the cargo deck, is impressive.

The Aviator will have a smooth ride, thanks to an airglide suspension that replaces the conventional coil spring/strut system. The suspension has a total travel of 80 millimetres, from its low, “kneeling position” that improves access and egress, to a maximum height setting for conditions that require added ground clearance.

For added safety and drivability, five drive mode settings are offered to suit the conditions, including Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery and Deep Conditions. The Grand Touring model will have two additional modes – Pure EV and Preserve EV – to help manage the vehicle’s electric energy.

Cadillac is expanding its utility vehicle lineup with the introduction of the XT4, an all-new compact luxury crossover designed (and priced) to compete with other iconic brands in the industry’s fastest-growing luxury segment. The XT4 features expressive design, confident performance, spacious accommodations, new technologies and unrivalled connectivity.

The XT4 is built on an all-new SUV architecture that’s exclusive to this compact model. This extremely rigid structure delivers ample space for a roomy, refined cabin, including segment-leading rear-seat legroom, and lots of space for cargo.

An all-new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine drives all models. This four-cylinder engine is exclusive to Cadillac, sharing nothing with GM’s other two-litre turbo fours. Porsche’s all-new, third-generation “sports car for five,” the 2019 Cayenne, features a new chassis, new turbocharged engines, new gearbox, enhanced connectivity and even a hybrid model.

This Cayenne is an evolution of previous designs, now longer, lower, wider and lighter, with its all-aluminum body contributing to the 65-kilogram weight reduction. Despite the lighter curb weight, the vehicle is still 20 percent stiffer than the outgoing model.

The Cayenne rides on a new multi-link suspension system front and rear that delivers improved ride and handling. An air suspension system with adaptive dampeners, electromechanically active anti-roll bars, torque vectoring and, for the first time, rear-axle steering, is an available upgrade.

The Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Turbo models all feature new turbocharged engines mated to a permanent all-wheel drive system and new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox. The base Cayenne’s 3.0-litre turbo V6 will launch to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, while the Cayenne Turbo, with a 550-horsepower, 4.0-litre twinturbo V8, can hit the 100 km/h mark in 3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.

Sportiness aside, the Cayenne delivers versatility, too, with up to 1,710 litres of cargo space, 40/20/40-split folding rear seats and adjustability to ensure the comfort of all passengers – 160 millimetres of fore/ aft travel up front and 10 backrest angles (up to 29 degrees) for rear-seat occupants.

➣ 2019 Audi A8 L Flagship A8 sedan gains more luxury, technology and sophistication The fourth-generation Audi’s flagship sedan, the 2019 A8, arrives with a new look and even more technology and sophistication. The wheelbase has been stretch 13 centimetres in the extended L version (the only model offered in Canada) and that added length enhances this premium vehicle’s already impressive proportions.

With aluminum comprising 58 per cent of the vehicle, its curb weight is 2,155 kilograms, making such a large sedan impressively nimble. Powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine with direct injection (a 4.0-litre V8 will be an option), it can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds and its overall velocity tops out at 209 km/h. RENO MAKES THE MOST OF AVAILABLE SQUARE FOOTAGE

ownsizing from an expansive home to one half the size can be daunting. That’s the challenge that faced Peter Groom and Stephen McClatchie when they purchased a home in Old North London a couple of years ago.

They loved the location and the two-storey home’s vintage early-20th-century character. But they wanted to add some 21st-century design elements and create a space that, though smaller, still felt like “living large,” Groom says.

Millennium Construction and Design took on the challenge with results that have the owners feeling they’ve achieved their dream home. The goal was to

“create symmetry and a feeling of space flowing throughout the home,” says Millennium’s Mark Vaandering.

Various design techniques were used to achieve this, such as repurposing spaces and painting the walls white throughout. Many large windows, affording a wealth of natural light, also added to the airy ambiance, Vaandering says. “There were so many details in that house to work with, and I just love how it all came together.”

The open-concept main level incorporates a cozy front living room with gas fireplace and an adjacent dining area leading to the new ultra-modern kitchen.

substantially increased by removing a pantry and a large bathroom.

A two-tier island was added with a lower eating space and upper working counter. Existing cupboards were replaced with custom cabinetry that extends from floor to ceiling and is painted in a dark finish to blend seamlessly with the black stainless steel appliances. The cabinets are complemented by the lighter granite countertops and the glossy porcelain tile backsplash.

The main floor living area was extended by an addition, adjacent to the kitchen. It includes a beverage centre and laundry area with garden doors to a small outdoor balcony.

The addition also incorporates a four-piece bathroom with heated floor, a stand-alone bathtub, spacious glassed-in shower and granite-topped vanity, echoing the counters in the kitchen, and beverage centre. These combine to create a contemporary and luxurious space, Vaandering says. Flooring on the main level was replaced with solid oak hardwood.

On the upper level, one of three bedrooms was converted to a spacious dressing room, with cabinetry lining each side and bracketing an end window. This is the only place in the house where colour was used on the walls, a punch of denim blue offsetting the white cabinets.

The creation of the dressing room allowed for additional space in the remaining two bedrooms. The front-facing master bedroom now includes a mini-library with a computer desk and bookshelves along one wall.

A small upstairs bathroom was also refurbished, replacing the bathtub with a glass shower to create space. Flooring in both upper and lower bathrooms is matte finished porcelain tile.

While the home is becoming everything its owners hoped for, the renovation is still ongoing. Future plans will see the addition of an expansive recreation and entertainment room behind the kitchen at the rear of the house with a wrap-around covered porch. n

enclosed dark womb-like enclosure – no light, no sound, no stimulation – floating, just floating. In this completely quiet, serene atmosphere I was able just let go and float into a meditative state. Being somewhat claustrophobic it could have been daunting but it wasn’t as the clean bright atmosphere outside the float tanks is welcoming, cheerful and professional. As a confirmed ‘water person,’ I’m game to try new types of aquatic activities and this outing proved to be relaxing, rewarding and enjoyable.

One of the city’s newest additions to the alternative wellness scene, Quantum Float and Salt Cave is owned by Luke and Asia Chmielewski. These determined entrepreneurs – ages 35 and 34 – are passionate about helping others through salt therapies. They each emigrated from Poland at the age of five and settled in London with their respective families. Asia worked as a crisis counsellor in Alberta and London, and Luke was a journeyman plumber and pipe fitter in Alberta before they opened their business in the Forest City.

The couple has a five-year-old son, Christian. “We wanted to give people time away from cell phones and have time in silence to gain inner peace,” explains Asia, “and that’s not an easy thing to do in this busy life.”

The 10-inch deep water in the four large bright, white float tanks is saturated with 1,000 pounds of the purest grade salt. “It’s three times denser than the Dead Sea,” says Asia.

Before undertaking this solo activity, one disrobes and showers in a private room adjacent to the tank. After entering the tank and starting the float, there’s soft music that eventually fades to provide a completely quiet experience.

The floater controls lighting, with variations possible: star-like lights above, illuminated water below or complete darkness. I preferred the latter as it gives the best opportunity for a meditative experience. “Laying in the warm water and taking away sight, sound and gravity lets the body go into beta when stimulants are removed. You can do the core inner work and get to your heart centre,” explains Asia.

Frank Melo, 49, agrees. This Londoner, who is a general contractor, finds that his once a week floats for the past three months enable him to be more patient during stressful times in his demanding construction profession. “I’m able to just shut off everything, and I can’t do that at home,” he explains.

“I’m calmer and have more clarity.”

12 tons of salt lining its floor, walls and ceiling. It has the encompassing cool, still quality of a natural cave but with soft lighting and 10 reclining chairs.

Spending a 45-minute session lying back in this tranquil atmosphere breathing in the fine salt provided by the halo generator repairs myriad respiratory problems. During my session, I dozed off under the blanket and had a nice nap, waking up breathing easier on a cold winter day.

“Salt therapy was discovered in Poland in the 1800s by a doctor who noticed that salt miners didn’t have lung disease or colds,” says Asia. “It’s good for respiratory and skin issues.”

Jordan Thomas, 37, agrees.

The Londoner has asthma and often gets bronchitis and pneumonia. Boutique Firenze imports fine leather goods

A

honeymoon in Italy was the genesis of a unique London shop selling a variety of European and Canadian products and giftware but built around its specialty items – Italian gloves and scarves. When Bettina Weber and Len Elliott married 12 years ago, they thought the Mediterranean country would be a romantic place to celebrate their nuptials. “We loved it,” Weber says. “Perhaps more than the average tourist. We loved it so much we immediately started thinking ‘what can we do to come here all the time?’”

The answer was Boutique Firenze.

It started as a part-time enterprise, importing and selling gloves and scarves. Weber says glove stores are common in Italy and carry a range of colours and styles not found in

Canada. And the quality in design and craftsmanship of Italian scarves is equally impressive.

Her research indicates that Boutique Firenze is the only Italian-style glove store in Ontario and possibly in Canada. “We have dozens of colours, not just a few,” she says. “We have unlined, silk-lined, wool-lined, cashmere-lined, even rabbit-fur-lined.”

For eight years, Weber operated the business from home while juggling two other jobs. She and Elliott travelled to Italy to source the products, which she then sold at fairs, women’s events, school sales and, in November and December in a pop-up store on Adelaide Street, where she ran a first-aid training business.

In 2017, she closed the training business, repurposed the location as a full-time retail shop and expanded

her product selection. Much of it still comes from Italy – the gloves from Naples, toiletries, stationery and scarves from Florence, glass jewelry from Venice – sourced primarily from small or family-run businesses.

In addition, she carries Canadiancrafted giftware. Several products are made locally – hats and purses from an area milliner, children’s toys by a London woodworker, placemats and aprons from refugee women at London’s World Tailors. Other items come further afield – blown glass from Fergus, gilded maple leaves from Waterloo, and scarves featuring Indigenous designs by First Nations artisans in the Pacific Northwest.

Weber says these selections will continue to expand as she and Elliott explore more regions in Italy and beyond. n

In addition to its product line, Bud says customers appreciate Catana’s

“That sets us apart. We have great installation and great after-sales service,” he says. “We have our own service department, our own employees. And, we have in-stock inventory so that, if a problem occurs, we can fix it quickly and the customer doesn’t have a long wait time.”

Catana serves both commercial and residential clients, the latter primarily new homes, working with builders, and vacation properties. It has been involved with a few of the London Health Sciences Foundation’s lottery dream homes.

Beachcomber offers full array of backyard enhancement options

A

growing trend for homeowners to trade vacationing for “staycationing” in their own back yards has been a bonus for London’s Beachcomber Hot Tubs. It’s something that dealership owner Jeff McColl and partner Jeremy Slemko are seeing in greater numbers.

“With the price of vacation properties, the cost of fuel and travel on busy roads, people are freeing up some of their home equity to spend on their backyards,” McColl says.

In response, Beachcomber is offering more outdoor living products. “Hot tubs are our main focus but we’re showing more gazebos and while we’ve sold barbecues for a while, we’ve gotten more into smokers and that sort of thing,” he says. They have a line of

indoor and outdoor saunas and have added fire pits and portable wood-fired pizza ovens to their product list.

Another component of their business is servicing all brands of hot tubs, saunas and outdoor pools. “It’s a big part of what we do,” McColl says.

The dealership has been serving the London region for two decades and, in 2016, had grown into a new and larger location and showroom on Wharncliffe Road. McColl says a commitment to customer service and offering quality products is a major factor in Beachcomber’s success.

“We try to get as much Canadian or North American-made product as we can,” he says. Their hot tubs are manufactured in Canada and designed and built for year-round use, rugged enough

to withstand harsh Canadian winters and to stay warm through the coldest weather. The dealership has a strong focus helping customers choose the best products and options for their needs.

When a client is planning a backyard project, McColl says, they offer free on-site visits, draw up sketches and assist in lining up contractors. “We do whatever we can to make their whole job as easy as it can be.”

Edwards and Sons build outdoor dreamscapes

I

f it’s an outside project that’s required, London’s Edwards and Sons Complete Property Maintenance will have the men and women for the job. “Anything outdoors we can do,” says Chris Edwards, who operates the business with his brother, Matt. “We do lawn maintenance, full landscaping, and carpentry work like decks and fences, for residential and commercial clients.”

They also work with home builders and have been involved with a few of the London Dream Homes. Their services include night lighting, garden rejuvenation, custom deck design, ponds, water features, patios, walkways and retaining walls, as well as snow plowing and removal.

Edwards and Sons is a secondgeneration family business, started 25

years ago by John Edwards as a lawn maintenance company that transitioned into landscaping and then added snow plowing to create a year-round enterprise.

Chris and Matt, started working with their father after graduating from secondary school, learning the necessary skills first-hand. Over the past several years, they have seen the business grow dramatically. Being family-run is an integral element of their success, Chris believes. “When a customer calls, they’re talking directly to Matt or me and they can see our attention to detail and that we care about their projects and homes as if they were our own,” he says. “Our employees realize that too and they like the feel and the culture we have here.”

Chris also attributes the success to

Another factor is a trend for homeowners to create more elaborate outdoor living spaces as an alternative to travel or cottage life. With an eye to this trend, the business has been starting to move into developing outdoor kitchens, something Chris expects to grow during the coming seasons.
