LOOKING FORWARD TO BRIGHTER DAYS

Now that we're heading towards spring, the increasingly sunny days give us hope that winter will soon be a distant memory. All in all, it hasn't been a bad winter, but days of relentless snow followed by dramatically warmer temperatures and rain – all within the space of a week – have made this season an exercise in endurance. Fortunately, there's plenty to look forward to in April. The annual London Spring Home and Garden Show, now in its 37th year, takes place from April 19 to 21. The show is a microcosm of trends that are occurring in the marketplace at large; in one location, visitors can explore decorating and remodelling ideas, and learn about new products. Outdoor living is an increasingly popular trend and it's no wonder that homeowners want to take advantage of every moment of warm weather they possibly can. Outdoor kitchens, patios, decks and low-maintenance plantings will all be on display at the show. Several exhibitors will also showcase products that transform the lowly garage into an integral part of the home. In this issue of Lifestyle, we've included a mix of stories about interesting businesses, renovations and new developments. Writer Ellen Ashton-Haiste has profiled a renovation in north London that resulted in a large open kitchen with an improved view of the backyard, as well as a new chalet-style cottage in Collingwood. The homeowners' aim was to create a retreat that combined a rustic ambiance with 21st-century conveniences. Deer Run, a development of new homes south of Grand Bend near Pinery Provincial Park, offers buyers an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities. In northwest London, Johnstone Homes is building tri-level townhomes at 1850 The Ridge. The first phase of 24 condos is under construction with another 40 planned. Automotive journalist Clare Dear has reviewed a handful of luxury automobiles with bold designs and nimble handling for 2013 and 2014. And if a wedding is part of your plans this spring, you'll want to read Heather Toskan's story on mother-of-the-bride fashions. The wedding location, time and degree of formality are all important considerations when it comes to choosing a dress.

A CHALET TO REMEMBER

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

DESIGNING CABINETRY FOR A COLLINGWOOD COTTAGE PROVED A SATISFYING CHALLENGE Greg Christie loves a challenge. The designer with GCW Custom Kitchens and Cabinetry got just that in a major project in Collingwood, where he created cabinetry and wood accents for 13 rooms in a chalet-style cottage. It was a large and complex undertaking that stretched over a year and was all the more demanding since, because of the distance, Christie completed the job without ever visiting the site.

Far Left: A wine rack is built into the working area of the kitchen island. Left: Perimeter cabinetry features spice roll-outs as well as oversized pots-andpans drawers.

But, “the more challenging the project, the more fun it is, because it requires more creativity,” he says. In this case, he adds, “the uniqueness was in the details.” The family wanted a retreat replete with 21st-century comforts but with the rustic ambiance of a mountain chalet. As well, the blueprints were set before Christie entered the picture. “We had to work with what was there in terms of doors and windows,” he recalls. Windows were plentiful throughout the home, including in the five ensuite bathrooms. “Where I'm fortunate is (having the) ability to make these things work,” Christie says. And, he adds, he was lucky to develop an excellent relationship with the builder – teamwork that was a definite key to the overall success. “He always understood what I needed and I understood what he needed.”

Above Top: The island has a Kohler apron-front cast-iron sink with a drain tray. Above Centre: Drawers adjacent to the stove are designed to hold jars and spices. Above Bottom: A warming drawer below the wall oven is concealed with a wood panel.

Perhaps the most challenging room was the ruckus room, a comfortable family gathering place for socializing, entertaining or just relaxing, with walls of wide horizontal planks and wideplank wood flooring. The focal point is the wall-mounted flatscreen television, flanked on each side by two central gas fireplaces set into fieldstone facades. To retain the rustic atmosphere, Christie used distressed

hickory with a black glaze for a hearth below each fireplace and for a nearly 14-foot-long mantel. The mantel stretches across both fieldstone facades and bisects the area that separates the television from a fabric-covered corkboard message centre above. Using the same hickory wood, Christie designed floor-toceiling cabinets on either side of the fireplaces, lit from above with pot lights.

The kitchen is another room that called for creativity. The nucleus of this room is a six-by-11-foot island that incorporates a work section and an eating area. The granite top has two slabs that Christie says were matched perfectly, so the pattern flows seamlessly and the joint is barely noticeable. The work area contains a Kohler apron-front cast-iron sink, a wine rack and one of two kitchen dishwashers, both concealed by wooden panels. The eating area of the island is supported by three massive square legs with raised panel details. Additional storage cabinets for items used infrequently were built into a recessed area beneath the counter. To create definition, the maple base of the island was distressed and glazed and stained a dark shade of beech. Contrast was created by applying a darker stain to the inset areas that surround the raised panel details on the legs. The maple cabinetry along the perimeter of the kitchen was stained a lighter shade than the base of the island. The wood was also distressed and glazed, and paired with dark granite counters that match the counter on the island. The cabinetry features extra-large drawers for pots and pans, as well as roll-outs to accommodate spices.

Above: The upper level, or attic, ensuite bathrooms required some creativity to provide full-sized vanities in the confined areas.

To tie in with the chalet style and the oversized island, the decorative range hood features carved moulding. Unobtrusive storage was designed in key areas of the kitchen. For example, the refrigerator is set into a maple shell topped by a four-foot flip-up panel that offers access to a deep storage area. Cabinets above a bar area and a corner tower incorporate glass shelves and doors of seedy glass with air bubbles that create a sense of opaqueness. Two floor-to-ceiling cabinets flank patio doors that lead to an expansive deck. In the lower level, adjacent to the ruckus room, cabinetry was provided for a bar and a library area with book shelves. Additional cabinets were created for the ensuite bathrooms, the entry-level bathroom and a powder room as well as two laundry rooms. A noteworthy feature in the bathrooms, Christie says, is LED under-cabinet lighting at the floor level. Christie says he's completed a handful of projects of this scope in his 30 years in the business. However, he's particularly proud of this one because of the unusual combination of modern and rustic elements. He says he loves the challenge of different projects and also keeping the designs fresh.

WHERE NATURE AND COMMUNITY MEET

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

For homeowners who love nature, cherish their privacy but enjoy socializing and participating in an active community, Deer Run offers the best of all worlds. The development of new homes off Hwy. 21, south of Grand Bend, is surrounded by nature – rural farmlands on three sides and, directly across the highway, Pinery Provincial Park, a 6,330acre expanse of woodland, Lake Huron beaches, campgrounds and extensive trail networks. “Active people who engage in lots of outdoor and natural activity really enjoy this setting,” says developer Stacey Graham of South Winds Development Company. Within Deer Run, the heavily treed building lots are all a half acre, something unique to the area, Graham says.

So residents have complete privacy and, at the same time, easy access to neighbours when they want it. The popular resort town of Grand Bend, with its wide sand beach, shopping, restaurants, golf, theatre and nightlife, is just 10 minutes up the highway. When buyers purchase a lot, there is no set time in which they must build. “Most often there is a time frame but, here, you can take all the time you want,” Graham says. Purchasers may also bring their own builder or choose from one of the model plans from Nicholson Builders. The development is now in its second and final building phase of 30 homes with lots priced from $169,900 plus HST.

BUSINESS PROFILE

woodworking with a passion

A CABINETMAKER BRINGS GENERATIONS OF EXPERTISE TO THE LONDON AREA By Ellen Ashton-Haiste “Passion = success” is a formula that Jose Burbano can attest to. The owner of London's JB Woodworks Design has a passion for both his calling and providing quality customer service. “It's my passion to see that a finished product not only satisfies the customer, but that I am also satisfied,” Burbano says. The philosophy is a family tradition, passed down through generations from his grandfather and father, who both operated woodworking businesses in his native Colombia. And it's that philosophy that has generated a thriving enterprise, designing and building cabinetry for Londoners for nearly a decade. Hands-on interaction with clients is a key factor in JB's success. “We take care of our customers, one at a time,” Burbano says. JB is a company that proudly reports its primary source of work is word-of-mouth referrals. Customers are pleased with the company's commitment to meet their needs and expectations, within their budgets, he says.

Trained as an interior designer, Burbano is able to design and build full kitchens or bathrooms, in styles ranging from Victorian and traditional to modern, taking them from his first handdrawn plans to the manufacture and installation. He also builds individual pieces such as office furniture and wall units. While much of his clientele is residential, he works with builders and general contractors on projects including spas or restaurants. He also has the experience and knowledge of regulations to build cabinetry for healthcare facilities, such as dentist offices and medical clinics. Although business is booming, Burbano has no desire to grow larger than his six-person operation. Bigger companies, he says, bring more stress and the risk of losing the personal touch he relies on to keep customers 100-percent satisfied. MARCH/APRIL

BUSINESS PROFILE By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A FLOOR TO LAST

When it comes to creating optimal base surfaces for garages, shops or commercial venues, Dave Brown and his son-in-law, James Greenhill, have the floor. They are the owners of Garage/Shop Floor Solutions, a London company that provides custom coatings for all types of concrete floors. Brown, who's had a long-time interest in restoring cars, was aware of a common SouthernU.S. practice of applying epoxy – a tough water- and chemical-resistant polymer coating – to shop and garage floors to protect the concrete. He had been doing it for himself and friends as a hobby prior to launching his business in 2005. The demand, particularly residential, has been growing steadily, in part due to homeimprovement television programs and word-of-mouth referrals. Last year, the volume of business had increased to the point that Brown brought Greenhill in as a partner. “We use proven methods and proven materials (primarily sourced from Canadian suppliers),” Brown says, adding that the finished product is guaranteed to last and be “impervious to salt, oil, spilled paints and spills of almost anything to hit the normal garage floor.” However, it's not just about how long the floor will last, he says. “The real question is how long is it going to last and look good.” Coatings can be adversely affected by UV rays and wear-and-tear. But Brown applies a durable top coating that prevents such deterioration, and says his premium floor is advertised to have a 20-year lifespan and will look great the whole time. The coatings are available in a variety of base colours and, for a decorative touch, he adds flecks or bits of metal flake. He also creates patterns but notes that elaborate patterns can be costly. However, margin lines that run parallel to the walls or special decals for car collectors are popular.

COMPACT ILX SEDAN OPENS GATE TO LUXURY SEGMENT

MKZ A NEW BENCHMARK FOR FUTURE LINCOLN MODELS

JAGUAR TRADITION GROWS WITH SLEEK NEW ROADSTER

The ILX compact sedan is designed to be the gateway to the Acura brand, incorporating all the luxury, performance and quality associated with this iconic nameplate, yet very much affordable with a starting price of $27,790. It features a spacious, sporty interior that's bound to impress with generous use of high-quality materials and the latest in advanced technologies. Building on a lengthy list of standard features, including a keyless access system, pushbutton start and advanced connectivity, customers can add two optional trim levels to personalize their ILX. The Premium package includes leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, an upgraded 365-watt stereo system and an active sound cancellation system to minimize the intrusion of noise into the cabin. The Technology package includes Acura's awardwinning ELS Surround audio system and a navigation system based on a hard disk drive (HDD) with 60 gigabytes of storage capacity. With either package, a multi-view rear camera is included. ILX buyers have a choice of three fuelefficient powertrain choices: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 150 horsepower; a 2.4-litre engine that generates a sporty 201 horsepower, or Acura's first hybrid drivetrain with a 1.5-litre engine and an integrated electric motor that combine to produce 111 horsepower.

The Lincoln MKZ is an all-new, midsize luxury sedan featuring fresh, elegant styling, the latest technologies and premium amenities intended to set the standard for future products bearing the iconic nameplate. The exterior styling of the MKZ – the first model created exclusively by the new Lincoln Design Studio – features a steeply raked windshield, sweeping roofline and flowing rear quarter. It not only looks sleek, it's 10 per cent more aerodynamic than the previous generation. The redesigned look of the signature split-wing front grille is reflected in the dramatic new instrument panel with fullcolour LCD instrumentation. Other innovative features include a push-button shift selector and an active noise control system that ensures the cabin is exceptionally quiet. The cabin of the MKZ features premium leather trim with real wood and metal-toned accents. The retractable panoramic sunroof is one of the largest in the industry. Available powertrains include a 2.0litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, producing 240 horsepower, and a 300-horsepower, 3.7-litre V6. Both are linked to a sixspeed automatic transmission and are available with front- or all-wheel drive. Also available is a hybrid system pairing a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor. The combined output is rated at 188 horsepower delivered through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels.

The rich heritage of Jaguar roadsters spans more than 75 years and includes some of the most beautiful, most coveted sports cars ever built. The 2014 F-TYPE continues the tradition. It's a true twoseat convertible that combines low vehicle weight (starting at 1,597 kilograms) and high engine output (340, 380 or 495 horsepower, depending on the model) to deliver exhilarating performance. Add superb aerodynamics to the mix and you have a gorgeous sports car that exudes the elegance and luxury you'd expect in a Jaguar. The F-TYPE's fourth-generation, lightweight aluminum architecture has increased torsional and lateral stiffness to maximize handling agility. The F-TYPE's soft top has multiple layers, including a Thinsulate lining that provides thermal and sound insulation. Raising or lowering the top can be accomplished in 12 seconds and at speeds up to 48 km/h. Three engine choices are offered – all driving the rear wheels through an eightspeed automatic transmission with paddle shifters as well as a SportShift lever mounted on the centre console. The base F-TYPE is powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 that generates 340 horsepower; the same 3.0-litre V6 kicks out 380 horsepower in the S iteration; and the F-TYPE V8 S is driven by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that produces 495 horsepower.

2014 Lexus IS series BOLD DESIGN, IMPROVED DYNAMICS HIGHLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS TO IS SERIES The next generation of Lexus IS series of sport sedans, featuring the IS 250, IS 350 and F Sport, delivers new levels of luxury, performance, style and comfort. Highlights of the 2014 Lexus IS, on sale this summer, include a bold new exterior, improved handling and performance, intuitive controls and advanced safety features, plus a choice of 2.5-litre four-cylinder or 3.5-litre V6 drivetrains with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. For 2014, the IS features the signature Lexus spindle grille, highlighted by a uniquely designed LED headlight cluster, giving the car an elegant but aggressive look. The wide flare of the wheel arches emphasizes the car's broad, powerful stance. F Sport models have an exclusive grille and front bumper design, with a larger lower opening to improve air flow to the cooling system. The new IS interior is more spacious, thanks to an increase in width and wheelbase – changes that have significantly improved rear-seat comfort as well as increasing luggage capacity. A new front-seat design with thinner seatbacks results in rear knee room that's best in class. The premium-grade materials used to trim the interior give the cabin a refined feel. The centre console features electrostatic switches that adjust the climate control with the touch of a finger.

2013 BMW X1 SPORTY ATTITUDE SETS X1 APART FROM UTILITY CROWD The BMW X1 has the looks of a crossover, but its soul is pure sports car. The sleek styling, road-hugging stance and low ride height set the X1 apart from the boxy designs typical of many utility vehicles. However, it's the engines powering this Sports Activity Vehicle that spark its sporty attitude. The X1 xDrive28i has a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower, but kicks out its maximum torque – 258 pound-feet of torque – at just 1,250 rpm. The other X1 model, the xDrive35i, has a 300-horsepower, 3.0litre inline six, also turbocharged, and it also cranks out its peak torque of 300 lb.ft. at a lowly 1,300 revs. That kind of output at such low rpm translates into an immediate response on launch and an equally rapid reaction to mid-range demands such as passing manoeuvres. The X1's impressive output is channelled through an all-wheel drive system which, under normal conditions, sends 60 per cent of the power to the rear wheels. The X1's dynamics match its sporty motivation, with handling that rivals some sports cars. Still, BMW has retained the utility features expected in this segment. There's plenty of space for stuff with the 40/20/40-split seats upright; even more (47.6 cubic feet) with the seatbacks folded.

2013 cadillac ats NIMBLE HANDLING HELPS MAKE NEW ATS A WINNER The new Cadillac ATS luxury sport sedan continues to earn accolades, including selection as North American Car of the Year and Canada's best new luxury car by AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada). Journalists reviewing the ATS have been especially impressed with its nimble handling, due largely to a curb weight of just 1,504 kilograms – one of the lightest in its segment. The car's light weight, combined with Brembo brakes, ensure stopping capabilities that are among the best in its class – 39.3 metres from 96 km/h to a standstill, while its premium electric variableassist ZF power steering system delivers precise response. The engine lineup offers three choices – the base 2.5-litre four-cylinder; a 2.0litre turbocharged four and a 3.6-litre V6. All three engines have direct injection and dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing to boost power and efficiency while reducing emissions. The engines are matched with six-speed automatic transmissions, although a six-speed manual gearbox is also available with the turbo engine. Allwheel drive is available. The crisp exterior styling, highlighted by signature vertical lighting elements front and rear, wraps around a driverfocused cabin trimmed in premium materials and fitted with advanced technologies, including Cadillac's CUE system that manages the car's information and entertainment systems.

YOUR SOURCE FOR THE ULTIMATE GARAGE!

IMPROVED FUEL EFFICIENCY

The Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 4MATIC has a fresh look for 2013 with an exterior that combines classic sport utility styling with design cures shared with the brand's prestigious sedans, plus a completely redesigned interior. Improvements for 2013 include new efficiency features such as the ECO stop/start system, which is standard on the GLK 350 4MATIC. This system improves fuel economy, particularly in city and suburban driving conditions, while the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system delivers phenomenal grip even in the most adverse conditions, on the road and off-road as well. The GLK 350 4MATIC is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 generating 302 horse-power and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. It's a smooth, refined engine that's been fitted with thirdgeneration direct fuel injection. This leading-edge technology, combined with the engine's multi-spark ignition system, further enhances fuel efficiency. However, while it may sip less fuel, it's no slouch at the stoplight, accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds. The engine's output is handled by a sevenspeed automatic transmission. The revised interior has a premium feel and includes heated front seats, a leatherwrapped multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and a 4.5-inch colour display in the instrument cluster. The GLK 350 4MATIC also delivers outstanding driving dynamics, excellent safety and superlative ride comfort – features that help make it a leader in the compact SUV segment.

FINCH AUTO GROUP

DEBUTS NEW MERCEDES-BENZ By Clare Dear DEALERSHIP

Mercedes-Benz London president Ryan Finch is so confident about the future of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the Finch Auto Group has invested about $10 million in a new, state-of-the-art dealership. The 35,000-square-foot structure, located at 35 Southdale Rd., just east of Wharncliffe, has been created using the Mercedes-Benz “Autohaus” concept, which promotes extensive use of glass to create a bright, open environment. Gleaming porcelain tile floors add to the transparency of the 13,000-square-foot showroom, which has enough capacity to display up to 25 vehicles, including the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup, from the new B250 hatchback to the highperformance AMG models. There's also space for vehicles from the dealership's pre-owned inventory. The new building, which was officially opened in January with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mercedes-AMG chairman Ola Kallenius, also features expanded service facilities. The 13,980-square-foot area has 16 service bays, including two oversized spaces for servicing Sprinters, the brand's dieselpowered line of commercial vans. There are also four detailing bays. Customers requiring service can drive into a heated reception area that can accommodate up to eight vehicles. Customers can wait for their vehicle in a comfortable lounge with glass windows overlooking the service bays. The lounge features comfy, oversized chairs, a 60-inch flat-screen TV and a Nespresso coffee machine. There's free WiFi for those customers keen to stay connected and free munchies to satisfy any hunger pains. Before committing to this investment, Ryan Finch was given a peek into the future by Mercedes-Benz executives in Germany. He returned to London convinced his plans for the new dealership were sound. “The brand is exploding with amazing vehicles at all price points and it takes this kind of facility to do the Mercedes-Benz story justice,” Finch said.

Mercedes-Benz GLK… now in diesel! EXPERIENCE THE LUXURY OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ GLK WITH THE EFFICIENCY OF DIESEL. Innovative BlueTEC clean diesel engines give eco-conscious drivers everything needed to feel good about motoring; like a selective catalytic converter to convert harmful emissions into harmless nitrogen and water, and an ECO start/stop function that cuts gas usage at prolonged stops. Where it surprises is in its torque: a whopping 457 lbs/ft!

oasis on the beach A ONE-TIME SUMMER COTTAGE HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A LUXURY RETREAT By Ellen Ashton-Haiste What was once a modest summer cottage, perched atop a bluff overlooking Lake Huron, is today a lavish lakeside estate. The transformation was effected by Brad Oke, a Grand Bendbased architectural technologist and builder, who renovated the cottage as a home for himself and his wife, Janice. Above: The cottage’s rustic elements include dormers, cedar shingles, cedar posts and a wraparound porch. Right: A rear patio features a massive fireplace of Owen Sound ledge rock. Bottom Left: Many outdoor entertaining areas are incorporated around the cottage. Left: The great room combines casual living and dining areas unified by a vaulted ceiling and a two-storey wall of windows.

Far Right: An indoor hot tub is enjoyed year round in an attached spa room located between the cottage and the garage. Right: The kitchen area in the loft above the garage features a stainless steel counter. Above: The kitchen includes black granite counters and cabinetry designed and built by Woodecor of Stratford.

Restricted by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority from rebuilding in the footprint of the existing cottage, Oke totally rebuilt what is now a 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home “from the inside out and the outside in.” He then added another three bedrooms in a guest apartment above a three-bay garage and enclosed the entire property with sound-deadening perimeter fencing. An automatic gate, topped with gas lanterns, allows access from a cul-de-sac at the end of Danceland Road, off Hwy. 21 midway between Grand Bend and Bayfield. “It's 13 minutes each way,” Oke says.

The result is a private compound and a natural oasis. “We picked it because it was so private,” he says. “When the gate is closed, the only open side of the property is facing the lake.” This property is listed with Trudy and Ian Bustard, of Oliver & Associates Real Estate Brokerage, Inc., for $2.3 million. “Rarely do we have the opportunity to market such a unique and luxuriously appointed property,” Trudy Bustard says. “It was renovated with no expense spared or design opportunity missed. The property features privacy unlike any other lakefront between Grand Bend and Bayfield.” Complete residential & select commercial renovation services

Good afternoon Nancy, The ad doesn’t work for me. The picture and main text seems okay but the placement of the logo and the top and bottom banner doesn’t seems to fit. Possibly, the Bernardo Group Logo to go right across the top. Underneath a similar banner to the existing header with the backgroung a solid colour. The bottom banner as is but with a solid colour background to match the top. If this doesn’t make sense please call and discuss.

Above: French doors off the guest bedroom above the garage open to a balcony that offers a forest view.

The main cottage was bolstered by steel reinforcement columns and strengthened rafters, reinsulated to R2000 standards, and given a new cedarshingle roof and wrap-around veranda and rear deck, where the couple spends most summer days. Oke says he wanted to retain the rustic flavour of the cottage. But there are numerous luxurious touches, such as radiant in-floor heating, an accent wall of dry stacked natural stone, black granite counters in the kitchen and a curving breakfast bar of acid-etched glass, a stainless steel refrigerator and pantry cabinets recessed beneath the staircase that leads to the master retreat. A vaulted ceiling in the main-floor great room and dining area is complemented by a twostorey wall of windows, affording a panoramic view of the surrounding forest and lake below. The master retreat is in a loft area overlooking the living space, incorporating a sitting area and office space, separated by french doors from the bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The cottage and the guest apartment/garage addition are linked by a spa room with a saltwater hot tub and a gas fireplace. The addition is one of Oke's favourite elements. “The garage is our public gathering area in the summer,” he says, displaying a wall-mounted 60-inch television, exercise area and a large roll-up window that opens to the rear deck and serves as a summertime bar. The deck features a massive corner fireplace of Owen Sound ledge rock.

The garage also incorporates a lower level that can be accessed by a motorized elevator for seasonal storage of outdoor furniture and even cars. Above the garage is the 1,200-squarefoot guest apartment, which is used primarily by the Okes' three sons when they visit. The property includes three indoor gas fireplaces in the great room of the cottage, in the spa room and in the guest apartment, in addition to the woodburning outdoor fireplace. “The property features privacy unlike any other lakefront between Grand Bend and Bayfield.” - Trudy Bustard

Exterior features include Maibec weather-resistant wood siding, dormers and cedar posts on the verandas, as well as Asian-inspired rain chains in place of downspouts. These comprise a series of metal cups with a hole in the bottom of each, joined by a chain, that funnel water from the eavestroughs down the length of the chain into catch basins beneath. Oke also owns an adjacent property with a four-bedroom guesthouse, which he rents out on most summer weekends. It can be part of the sale for an additional $800,000. The two properties comprise two acres and 210 feet of lakefront, accessed by a drivable pathway from the top of the bluff to the beach. Oke says it's a wide sand beach – “more so now with the lake levels down” – and great for swimming. And it's just a short boat ride up to the Grand Bend marina. Oke uses a portable, motorized roll-out dock to launch his craft from the beach. 30

If your daughter's wedding is on the horizon, the pressure's on to look your best. “Today's mothers of the bride and mothers of the groom both want to look youthful and stylish. Gone are the matronly (dress) styles of the past, says Carolyn Cini, co-owner of Winston Fashions in St.Thomas. In addition to finding a dress that fits well and suits your style, your son or daughter's wedding is truly a time to look fashionable and elegant. A few traditional rules can help when choosing your dress. Most bridal experts agree that proper etiquette dictates that the mother of the bride chooses her dress before the mother of the groom. It's considered bad form for mothers of the bride and mothers of the groom to wear the same colour as each other, or to wear the same colour as the bridal attendants.

You can also forget the old adage about not wearing black to a wedding; however, it's best to leave shades of white and ivory to the bride. Black and champagne are two of most popular dress colours for mothers of the bride and groom, with pewter, gold and pale pink tones also finding favour. Jade, turquoise and blue – particularly cobalt blue – are fashionable for those preferring bolder colours.

“Along with colour and style preferences, the wedding location, time and degree of formality are also considerations when choosing a dress,” Cini says. “Many moms continue to prefer the formality of long gowns, but cocktail-length dresses are also extremely popular.” In general, the more formal the wedding, the longer the dress, but long dresses are also suitable for the many casual outdoor and “destination” weddings held in sunny climes. “We usually recommend long chiffon dresses, which are lightweight and cool for summer beach weddings and winter weddings down south. A stylish straw hat or fascinator is another must,” says John Cini, co-owner of Winston Fashions.

Flattering details on fashionable frocks include Empire waistlines, cap sleeves, ruffles, jewelled trim, beadwork, lace and mesh overlay. Matching boleros and wraps help to complete a polished look, along with dressy accessories and shoes. “Although many women value the opinions of friends and family when dress shopping, remember that the choice ultimately belongs to you and that you should choose the dress that you like best and feel comfortable wearing,” says Carolyn Cini. If possible, it's wise to start shopping as early as six to eight months ahead of time for your dress, as the style or colour that you choose may need to be custom ordered or altered. If you're shopping on short notice don't despair, but be certain to steer yourself to stores with wide off-the-rack selections.

And today's homeowners are increasingly investing their homes with heart, recreating their living spaces as expressions of their personalities and lifestyles. It's an evolution that's reflected in the annual London Spring Home and Garden Show, now in its 37th year, says director Art Bacon. Each year, more than 300 exhibitors highlight new trends along with cutting-edge products for indoors and out.

Right: Make sure to see Peter Fallico, from HGTV’s Home to Keep. His presentation, “Renovating and decorating ideas that can save you time and money,” will take place on Sat. April 20 at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the Idea Stage. Left: Don’t miss Andrew Downward, from HGTV and W Network’s Divine Design. He will discuss “The Power of Paint” on Sun. Outdoor living is one trend that's gaining momentum. As part of that, Bacon notes, a concept that's materialized in the past several years is organizing and refurbishing the garage, transforming it from simply a storage space for vehicles and outdoor implements into an integral part of the home. Several exhibitors this year will be showcasing these designs and ideas. The landscaping section will feature inventive designs to bring homeowners out of the house. Escapes Outdoor Living Designs, for example, is exploring “outdoor rooms” and is featuring an outdoor kitchen. “It’s an

an example of what can be accomplished in a small space, for urban living,” says designer Jesse Sutton. The 20-by-20-foot space includes natural elements – raised wooden plant boxes, small trees and shrubs, and outdoor visual art installations. Opposite corners host a casual lounging and socialization patio and a wood deck/bistro area, ideal for breakfast or a coffee break. A diagonal pathway of patio stones is bordered with grass to soften the character of the space. As well, Bacon notes, the ever-popular Porky's Grilling School, a collaboration by Broil King, Weber Grills and Porky's BBQ and

Also appealing to outdoor enthusiasts is the presence of the London Horticultural Society with its Spring Flower Show and Competition, a show fixture for the past 35 years. The London Garden Club will be on hand with an interpretation of a Victorian garden and London Middlesex Master Gardeners will be sharing expertise. The Design Centre will feature outdoor and indoor trends. Here, the latest in decor, cabinetry and colour can be explored, Bacon says. For example, Mobelhaus Furniture from Aylmer will present its trademark solid-wood furnishings and cabinetry, built on the tradition of hundreds of years of quality furniture by German, Mennonite, and Amish craftsmen. “We'll be displaying a custom solidwood kitchen, along with samples of our

furniture,” says owner Herbert Hildebrandt. “We specialize in doing any style, modern, traditional, classic and can match or rebuild (a piece) in any style (the customer) wants.” He has also partnered with Ground Effects Landscaping from Hanover, which he recommends to clients looking to enhance their outdoor areas along with their indoor cabinetry. “They'll be displaying some of the latest products you can get for landscaping,” Hildebrandt says. Another escalating trend is in-home technology. London Audio will be highlighting some state-of-the-art products. Over the last 35 years this retailer has grown to be much more than an audio store, says owner Rick Ho. “We have

everything electronic that a home might need.” This exhibit will showcase whole-house audio solutions, including smart home security systems, Internet-monitored security cameras and wireless home theatres. “Consumers will learn how they can retrofit their homes with the latest technology without running any new wires,” Ho says. On the Idea and Gardening Stages, Bacon says, a parade of experts will share knowledge and education. Overall, for the 20,000 visitors to the show, there's certain to be something to pique the imagination and more than a few ideas to take home.

INSPIRED SOLUTIONS A YOUNG LONDON CABINETRY BUSINESS FOCUSES ON DETAILED DESIGNS By Ellen Ashton-Haiste If the devil's in the details, London's Inspired Woodworks is in for an amazing ride. “Our strength is our attention to detail,” says Bonnie Hardy, one of the partners in the two-year-old London cabinetry business. The ability to design a piece to precisely meet a client's requirements, to custom fit a cabinet into an available space, or to colour match a new piece with existing cabinetry is born out of the combined experience of the partners. Bonnie and Craig Hardy bring years of involvement in building and renovating homes through their business, Covenant Construction, while Casey Fawcett and Erin Ainge, from Something Different Designs, likewise offer a wealth of design expertise. “Our combined experience in the industry gives us an understanding of the process of designing and installing cabinetry from beginning to end,” Hardy says. They've assembled a five-person team of professional woodworkers to create full kitchen and bathroom renovations plus custom pieces for living rooms, bars or offices in a 6,000-square-foot shop including a state-of-the-art paint booth. Canadian and local suppliers are another cornerstone of the business. “We believe that for a business to flourish, it must be invested in the community,” Hardy says. The attention to detail can also be seen in some of the unique product lines Inspired Woodworks is developing. “We're a solution-oriented company,” Hardy states.

Right Inset: This laundry room/mudroom has an abundance of storage cabinets and also has a sink and custom-made compartments for the washer and dryer. Right: Plenty of storage is available in this unit, which features many drawer and door compartments. It also includes ventilated door panels to allow wet clothing hung inside to dry well and a chalkboard message centre.

One area the designers have focused on is solutions for the war on clutter that plagues modern families. They have created a line of designer and modular “cubbies” – storage units conceived for areas from mudrooms and laundry rooms to playrooms. These incorporate features such as ventilated door panels to allow wet clothing hung inside to dry well, pullout shelving and cork and chalkboard message centres. Another line Inspired Woodworks has developed is ADA-compliant (Americans with Disabilities Act) vanities geared to special needs, with features that include roll-back doors, pullout extensions, varied heights and plumbing adjusted to make life easier for those physically challenged or wheelchair-bound. Whatever the project, the company offers detailed solutions that start with free in-home consultations, preliminary designs and cost estimates. “We think differently about service, local (support) and details,” Hardy says.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW A LONDON FAMILY’S RENOVATION PROJECT OPENED UP A WHOLE NEW KITCHEN SPACE

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste From the central island in Jill Potter's new kitchen, she has an expansive view through garden doors of the backyard deck, pool and cabana. “It's awesome,” Potter says. “I wanted a great view to the back and I wanted everything to feel big and open.” It's a world of difference from a year ago when the backyard view was through a small window over the sink in a kitchen so small there was room only for a bistro table. The transformation was achieved through a four-month-long renovation, completed last August, by Melchers Construction. Three walls dividing the kitchen, dining room and laundry area were removed and a laundry cabinet was created to tuck away the washer and dryer, leaving a large open area for the kitchen. The heart of that new space is the 10-foot hand-stained walnut island topped with white patterned engineered quartz. Constructed by Woody's Custom Cabinetry, the island incorporates an eating area along one side and a work section with built-in storage and a dishwasher on the other. Behind it, a wall of cabinets, coated with a laquer custom-tinted to match the counters, flanks the stove and refrigerator. Above: A kitchen, dining room and laundry area were opened up to create a spacious new area for eating and entertaining. Top Right: Central to the new kitchen is the 10-foot island that incorporates working space and an eating area. Bottom right: A mini bar was constructed just inside the garden doors that open to the deck and rear yard. MARCH/APRIL

Distinctive touches in the cabinets include enclosing the microwave and creating an illuminated display area above the built-in refrigerator. “We were going to just close that in, but I really like that decorative space,” Potter says. Woody's also built a bar next to the garden doors and refurbished an adjacent powder room to include a new vanity. Melchers installed wainscoting, carrying it up the stairway to the second floor and along the upper walls. Throughout the new kitchen area, they also laid porcelain tile flooring that resembles hardwood over radiant in-floor heating. Removing the walls was the greatest challenge, says Chris Melchers, company co-owner. Since the walls were structural, steel beams were installed to support the second storey. But the difficult aspect was rerouting the services – water lines, heating, ventilation and air conditioning – originally contained in the walls but now concealed in the beamed ceiling. Another aspect of the renovation involved remodelling the oak staircase. A carpet runner was removed, the treads were coated with a dark stain and the risers painted. The handrail and round spindles were also replaced. Potter is delighted with the result and credits Melchers. “I knew exactly what I wanted,” she says. “I had a really strong vision and he gave me it exactly.”

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

JAMES STREET: ALL ABOUT FAMILY James Street is a true family affair. The Port Stanley home decor and gift shop is a partnership between Wendy Kipp and her daughters, Cassandra and Jessica. As well, her son, Addison, a Toronto artist, sells artwork there. Jessica's husband, Arthur Korbeil, takes photos for the website. And Wendy's mom, 86-year-old Audrey Smith, is known as the “stock lady,” seen most summer days outside, enthusiastically unpacking boxes and chatting with passers-by. But the most important family member in the business is husband and dad, Jim Kipp, who passed away in August 2011 from melanoma cancer and whose spirit is very much infused into the shop. A tribute poster inside the entrance tells the story, stating: “Even though Jim left us too early in life, it opened a new chapter for the rest of the Kipp family.” After his death, Wendy says she “needed a reason to get up and move on.” Her daughters had always wanted to open a store, so she said: “let's do it.” They launched the business last May and in September, when the adjacent store became available, they bought the

property, knocked out a wall and doubled in size. The merchandise is an eclectic mix that ranges from kitchen gadgets to wall art and greeting cards. As much as possible is sourced locally, such as a line of bath and body products from Sarnia and candles that are handmade in Essex County. A specialty is Jessica's custom handmade wreaths. Self-taught, she started making them as a hobby and selling them at craft shows, a pastime that's grown into a company, Door Decor. Wendy says she and her daughters are having a lot of fun with the store, enjoying the hunt for new and unusual products and establishing relationships with customers. She notes that they often comment on the “homey feel” and will drop in just to say “hi.” But Jim Kipp's memory is a constant, even to the shop's background music, all from his collection. Last August, on the anniversary weekend of his passing, a portion of the sales was donated to melanoma research. And a new gift-wrapping service will see all proceeds donated to that cause. A distinctive development of tri-level townhomes is on the rise in northwest London. Johnstone Homes is building 1850 The Ridge, off Beaverbrook Avenue west of Wonderland Road. The first phase of 24 condos is under construction with another 40 planned. There are a few elements that set this development apart, says builder Matt Johnstone. One is the tri-level construction; he says he's not aware of any similar townhomes in the area. With living areas on the upper two levels, the ground-floor garage offers abundant storage space or the possibility of incorporating a workshop. The site itself has some noteworthy features. From one of the city's high points, the property slopes downward to Whetherfield Park and pond, close to the marsh preserve. “It's secluded, with a terrace feel,” Johnstone says of the site. “At the top, homes have spectacular views of the downtown London skyline. Those at the bottom (a row of two-storey townhomes) have basement walk-outs to the park and pond and an adjacent playground.” An expanse of private green space will separate the development's two phases, with a network of meandering trails leading to the park.

Interior details include expansive windows and recessed display shelves.

Top: At The Ridge, the Georgian exteriors are varied with a combination of brick and siding with shutters and window boxes offering added charm.

There's more that distinguishes these condos from similar developments, says sales and marketing spokesperson Cristina Ferro. “Matt pays close attention to detail,” she notes. At The Ridge, all facades are different and use a combination of brick and siding and colour combinations to set each apart from its neighbours and avoid cookie-cutter sameness. Window boxes and shutters add charm to the classic Georgian exteriors, Ferro says. “It’s secluded, with a terrace feel. Expansive windows allow natural light to illuminate the living areas. There are extra touches, as well, including recessed display shelves. The main level features an openconcept living room and gourmet kitchen with an island or dinette; most main-floor plans include a two-piece bathroom. The upper level has laundry facilities, as well as a main bathroom and two or three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. Purchasers can customize their colour schemes and cabinetry from a selection of design packages. Standard features include laminate flooring on the main level, carpet on the upper floor, and a ceramic tile backsplash, under-cabinet lighting and granite countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms. A kitchen and laundry appliance package is an optional add-on. The homes range in size from 1,434 to 1,617 square feet and are priced from $219,900 to $239,900, including HST. Condo fees are $155 a month. Despite its sense of privacy, the development is located minutes from shopping, restaurants, an aquatic centre and health club, plus an arena and soccer fields.

STAN PORTLEY’S INSPIRING THE ARTIST WITHIN

Right: The van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection features 25 standard colours.

Empowering inner creativity and, at the same time, crafting beautiful and functional pieces of furniture or art is a key focus at the new London location for Stan Portley's – Timeless and Unique. This is thanks to the fact the store's proprietors, John and Bobbie Robinson, discovered the van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection. Created by British Columbia artist Kathy van Gogh, the product is simply water, pigment and a chalk binder. So it has none of the toxins that may come in paints made with oil or chemical solvents. It also uses a natural beeswax finish.

Left: Natural wood kitchen cabinets can be given a complete makeover with the paint. Below: A three-piece bedroom suite was transformed, using less than a litre of paint.

And the best news, says Bobbie, is its ease of use. “There is no sanding, no priming, even no cleaning required. You just start painting. I tell people 'no sanding, no priming, no kidding!'” Bobbie has been painting furniture for about eight years and was selling her finished pieces at the original Stan Portley's in Port Stanley. It's a way to give a fresh look to antiques and well-built older furnishings, she says. But she was searching for a more environmentally- and people-friendly product when she connected with van Gogh last fall. Stan Portley's is the exclusive retailer for the van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection in London, Port Stanley and the surrounding region. The store will have four custom colours in addition to the collection's 25 standard ones that can be mixed to create 500 different hues. The Robinsons offer a series of workshops on using the paint, from introductory to refurbishing individual pieces, held at both the London and Port Stanley stores and, in summer, at their Sparta barn. The paints, along with pieces finished by Bobbie – who will also paint clients' pieces for them – will be the primary focus at the London store. However, it will also carry some of the antiques, treasures and unique gift items that the Port Stanley location has become known for over the past eight years. One of the more popular of these items are wood and metal signs that look antique but are actually custom-made and can be personalized. The Robinsons have sold and shipped these as far away as Australia, New Zealand and China.

LONDON ART STUDIO TOUR By Beth Stewart A 20th anniversary is cause for celebration, so it's no wonder the London Artists' Studio Tour is kicking it up a notch in 2013! The Studio Tour is an annual juried event that is hotly anticipated by those in the know. It is organized by a small group of professional artists who work hard to compose an event that includes a mix of new and returning artists, and an eclectic range of media. On April 12, 13 and 14, 27 artists at 26 studios will throw open the doors to their working environments and invite the public to learn more about their creative processes. Among them will be 20year tour veteran Kevin Bice and tour newbie Joanna Mozdzen. This is a self-guided tour. Brochures are available throughout the city or through the tour website. This year's tour is preceded by a “20th Anniversary Exhibition” at The Art Exchange March 5 to 23 to which all 132 past and current tour artists were invited to submit one piece each. It promises to be an exciting look back for participants and patrons.

HICKORY RIDGE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB ‘A BEAUTIFUL, WALKABLE FAMILY COURSE’

By Clare Dear Golfers in the London area have an abundance of excellent courses that can challenge their skills, but there's one aspect of Hickory Ridge Golf and Country Club that sets it apart from the rest. Regulars who play this 5,200-yard, par-68 layout praise its well-groomed greens and fairways – and club pro Eric Dunn agrees. Our golf course is always immaculate,” Dunn says of Hickory Ridge. “We have the greenest golf course in London; we don't hold back on the quality of our greens and fairways.” Hickory Ridge, established in 1996 at 3435 Woodhull Rd., west of Lambeth, is described as a beautiful, walkable family course. It mixes gently rolling terrain with heavily wooded areas and ponds – all combining to offer plenty of challenge for golfers, regardless of their skill level. For example, the club's signature hole is No. 18, a par-4 that plays 312 yards from the blue tees (308 from the white; 301 from the red.) Dunn says this hole can ruin a good game if the golfer isn't careful. His tip for success is to hug the left side off the tee with a 200-yard shot as the pond on the right comes out into the fairway at the 220-yard mark. “The fairway slopes severely right, so even landing in the middle will often cut off a clear view of the green.” Before starting your game, there's a fine putting green and a target driving range that provide an ideal opportunity to warm up. Green fees at Hickory Ridge are reasonable, with regular weekday rates at $31 and $37 on weekends and holidays. Green fees are reduced for later starting times and there's a special golf and cart package offered to seniors. College and university students also enjoy a special rate, with prime-time fees reduced 10 per cent. Spring and fall fees are offered as well, including an early-bird package that gives spring golfers 12 rounds for the price of 10. (Dunn is hoping the club will be able to tee off its season the first week of April.) Check the website, www.hickoryridge.ca, or call the club at (519) 652-0407 for more details. If you're interested in purchasing a membership for the 2013 season, they are currently being offered at 2012 rates, with pricing starting at $1,175 (plus HST) for an adult seven-day package. There's also a new rate of $1,125 for seniors. The seven-day rate for a husband and wife is $1,945. The club also offers a complete range of CPGA teaching programs. Another feature at Hickory Ridge worth noting is the pro shop. It's fully stocked with quality merchandise, from brandname mid-range clubs to the top-of-the-line equipment, all offered at very competitive prices. In addition, caring staff are on hand to share their expertise and assist with your purchases. Hickory Ridge can accommodate any tournament requirement with a full range of services, including banquet facilities that seat up to 120 persons.

ANDY TIMMERMANS NOVEMBER 24, 1918 - MAY 20, 2012

Story contributed by the Timmermans family.

“At 78, I started golfing ... guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. - Andy Timmermans

August 4, 1996 was a memorable day at Hickory Ridge. Club pro Dave Corbiere cut the ribbon to open the course and Andy Timmermans watched sons Bill and Rini drive the opening tee shots from Hole #1 right into the pond! That was the day he decided to take up golfing on the property that had previously been home to him since 1979. Andy had long admired the property during the years he and his wife, Mary, had raised their seven children. Andy owned and operated an excavating business that did the site work and excavating for various projects, including many of the schools built in the London area between 1958 and 1988. Known for his honesty and his commitment to quality work, Andy was a valued member of the London Construction Association, where deals were often sealed with a handshake. In 1972, Andy purchased the property which became Hickory Ridge. Attracted to its mix of farmland and forest, he thought it ideal for the dream home he had in mind for himself and Mary. Construction began in 1977 and the family moved into the home two years later. The following years were filled with happy family times at the home (now the Hickory Ridge Clubhouse) as Andy's family

joined in weekend hiking, fishing and skating activities. By the early 1990s, the upkeep was becoming a chore for Andy and his sons accepted his offer to sell the property. Andy watched with interest from 1993 to 1996 as his sons used their site work experiences at several other local courses to transform his former property into an executive-length course that would be attractive to the emerging baby boomer population. And so it was, after the official opening, that Andy, at the age of 78, decided to take up the game of golf. It proved to be quite a challenge. Many can attest to Andy's unorthodox swing style. He loved the game and the social interaction with members of the Men's Senior League and the Hickory Masters. He especially enjoyed the high-fives when tee shots went over 125 yards or when long putts fell into the cup. Andy's passing was felt deeply by his former golfing friends and the extended Hickory Ridge family. He will be remembered in the clubhouse with a framed picture as seen above. As well, the Masters League has used its 50/50 draw funds to purchase a bench and a plaque for the third tee to commemorate Andy's many years as a League member. MARCH/APRIL

BUSINESS PROFILE

DINING ON THE WATERFRONT By Ellen Ashton-Haiste From the patio, the view of the Lake Huron sunset is spectacular, a polychromatic spectrum of reds, oranges and yellows as the sun sinks into the horizon. It's a sight that Brad Oke believes will draw patrons to his restaurant, Smackwater Jack's, which is now entering its second season as an eaterie on Grand Bend's Parkhill Creek, locally known as the Ausable River. The restaurant is accessible by both land and water, thanks to floating docks and a stairway to the patio, introduced when it was discovered that boaters were attempting to climb the seawall to gain

access to the restaurant, Oke says. And, he says, it caters to the boating crowd as well as theatre-goers at the Huron Country Playhouse. Oke purchased the property, a former fish house, a year and a half ago. A victim of the dwindling fish industry, it had been repurposed for various uses, including a restaurant/bar. It was initially licensed for 75 seats inside and the same number outside. But in the tourist season, patrons preferred the outdoors. So Oke has licensed an additional 100 outdoor seats and extended the patio. Continued on pg.68

Above: Dining at sunset on Smackwater Jack’s outdoor patio is a favourite for patrons.

In its first year, the upper level was renovated. However, the lower level required added insulation so it is now being refurbished with a new kitchen, infloor heating and accessible restrooms. Oke says the cuisine will be somewhere between fine dining and fast food, with ingredients sourced from a 25-mile radius of Grand Bend. Seafood will be a staple with salmon and Great Lakes perch, pork from Whole Pig in Dashwood, other meats from Metzger Farms in Hensall and turkey from Hayter Farms, near Dashwood. Oke is also planning an increase in the local content of beer and wine, and plans to work with local craft breweries and wineries. He's also introducing weekend entertainment and a lighter aftertheatre menu and sunset drinks.

HOT YOGA

EXERCISE ENTHUSIASTS ARE TURNING UP THE HEAT By Ellen Ashton-Haiste Some like it hot. In fact, when it comes to yoga, more and more are liking it that way, says Lisa Shackelton, who operates Yoga Shack in Wortley Village, offering a variety of yoga and Pilates classes. Hot yoga is a variation of the exercise regimen that involves assuming and holding various body postures that are designed to build muscle strength and flexibility, combined with controlled breathing and meditation to promote relaxation, mental calm and stress reduction.

The difference is that “hot yoga” is done in a heated environment. The heat greatly adds to the experience and benefits, Shackelton says. “Heat is awesome. The body relaxes when it's warm.” As an illustration, she suggests imagining the difference between a cold winter day, when the body tenses up against the chill, and a warm sunny day on the beach when it relaxes and aches and pains disappear. In the heated environment, muscles become more pliable, she says. So they stretch further, with a lower risk of injury. Shackelton has her own personal testimonial to how well this works. Injured in a car accident several years ago, she required a cervical spine fusion. During her rehabilitation, she turned to hot yoga, which she had been practising prior to the accident. She maintains it was instrumental in helping her recover flexibility and mobility. There are other benefits, she says. Hot yoga induces sweating. The skin, the body's largest organ, eliminates toxins through perspiration, while sweating stimulates the metabolism and the immune system. Hot yoga can help develop mental

strength as well, she says. In order to hold the yoga postures, it's necessary to remain focused. As the heat helps the body relax, it aids in focusing the mind and improves mental concentration. She says students have reported hot yoga benefits, including increased flexibility, stress relief, weight loss, improved immune systems, increased energy and cardiovascular abilities. There is no fitness prerequisite to go into hot yoga, she says. She has students of all ages – from moms and babies to retired seniors – and in all shapes, sizes and degrees of fitness. “People say, 'I can't do it because I'm not flexible,' but you don't have to be,” she says. “Just try it out. You do what you can and keep moving.” For those who want to get a taste and decide whether hot yoga is for them, Yoga Shack offers free Friday night sessions as an opportunity to experience it. But to get the most out of them, Shackelton advises students to come hydrated from drinking water throughout the day and not chugging a bottle just before the session. And, she adds, don't come after a heavy meal, but eat a light snack in preparation.

THE RENOVATION CHALLENGE The original kitchen lacked flow as result of two opposing peninsula islands and the dining area was missing connectivity from the main family room.

THE CREATIVE SOLUTION We decided to keep the refrigerator, sink and dishwasher in the same location to reduce cost, but introduced two distinct zones to the kitchen to create proper flow. We designed the kitchen to have two islands so that one island could be dedicated to cooking near the stove and wall ovens, and the other with seating for family and entertaining near the family room below.
