L
ate winter or early spring – what term do you ascribe to this period where the world still slumbers in colder temperatures, while we welcome every sunny day as a promise of coming bounty, the thermometer climbing and snow disappearing? Soon our lawns will be verdant and green and we’ll be able to play and work on them. We’ll be plotting our plots with great concern about what grows where. For now, we wait and we ready ourselves. Part of that is ensuring that we’ll be strong and healthy to be ready to enjoy being outdoors. To ensure that I’m ready to take on spring and summer fun, I’ve made doing aquafit classes two or three times each week part of my fitness schedule. Writing the health story in each issue lets me explore interesting new concepts in wellness and this issue is no different. I discovered that I love to get fit in the water and, thankfully, many others are discovering that they are also taking advantage of this form of exercise. Great aquafit teachers sharing their passion and expertise is one of the reasons for this. I feel so lucky to learn from the likes of Theresa Carriere, who started the OneRun from Sarnia to London to raise money and awareness about breast cancer. Besides being a fitness guru, she’s an amazing fundraiser and last year she won the Pillar Innovation Award for community leadership. And no one is as passionate about what she does than Darlene Willie, whose aqua zumba classes are as fun as they are a good work-
out. While doing the research for this story, I took a variety of classes across the city and discovered that all of the teachers have this level of professionalism, enthusiasm and caring. I hope you’ll read the story on page 59 and consider getting wet to get fit. As temperatures climb this spring, your wardrobe will also need to get in shape to get you outside, so be sure to check out Heather Toskan’s story on page 54. You’ll look hot as you work up a ‘glow’ doing all those fun activities. Speaking of hot – how about that real estate market? Showing no signs of cooling off, it can be tough to find new homes for eager buyers. Builders are answering this call, so Ellen AshtonHaiste reports on the wide array of model homes starting on pages 43. Hot is also the word I would use to describe the new cars that auto journalist Clare Dear shows off on page 22. If a new ride is on your wish list, checking out these hot offerings will warm you up for spring. Get ready, get set and go…time to swing into spring!

Historic renovation marries cHarm and convenience

The historic Bishop’s Mansion – a century estate – has been restored as a gated condominium community. Since the exterior is clad in salvaged brick, with rain glass windows on the front door and side panels, the new addition, a home for Pat and Gayle Malloy, is virtually indistinguishable from the original building.
H
eritage and contemporary design are seamlessly blended in an innovative condo home, built by Duo Building owner Pat Malloy and his wife, Gayle, as an addition to London’s historic Bishop’s Mansion. The century estate, at the west end of Central Avenue overlooking the Thames River and Blackfriars Bridge and home to the city’s Roman Catholic bishops for more than 90 years, has recently been restored as a gated condominium community. “The opportunity to build here, in an area so rich in heritage, surrounded by nature, on the river, and yet in the heart of downtown London and close to all its amenities, was just too attractive to pass up,” Malloy says. The two-storey home, flows from the rear of the original house. Clad in salvaged brick, with rain glass windows on the front door and side panels, the exterior is virtually indistinguishable as a new addition. From the spacious foyer, a two-storey brick wall, matching the exterior flanks an open-riser oak staircase to the upper level. Continued on page 12

A wall of windows – that can be rolled up to blend indoor and outdoor living and entertaining spaces – divides the home’s interior from the wrap-around patio.
Mounted in its centre is a vintage Supertest sign from a former city business. “These add to the site’s historic ambiance,” Malloy says. Since the main living area is on the upper level, the Malloys have installed an elevator. A great room, dining area and kitchen stretch the length of the upper level, opening at the north end to an all-season sunroom and outside wrap-around patio. The kitchen is the heart of the space. A 12-foot island with a grey base and white, grey-veined granite counter is complemented by white cabinetry and black quartz on the perimeter with a backsplash of grey porcelain tile. A wooden beam, reclaimed from the bishops’ house, encases the range hood, another nod to the property’s heritage. The sunroom, featuring a gas fireplace set in a floor-to-ceiling dark rough cut pine surround, is an ideal place to relax and appreciate views of the estate and Thames River Valley beyond. A wall of windows can be rolled up to open the room to the outdoor patio. At the top of the staircase, a hallway leads to a two-piece bathroom and beyond that, the master suite with large walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom including a sizeable glassed-in shower, free-standing tub and private water closet. The lower level includes an office/ den, guest bedroom, three-piece bathroom and spacious mudroom lined with benches and storage cubbies. There’s also access to an expansive garage. The condo was built with energy efficiency in mind, Malloy says. “Most materials are low VOC.”

A passion carved in stone
W
hether it’s restoring a chimney, building a fireplace, or creating an outdoor living retreat, if the pro ject involves stone or brick, Cody Symes is up for the challenge. “Manufactured or natural stone, if it’s masonryrelated I can do it,” he says. “I have a large range of skills.” Symes launched his Goderich based Advanced Masonry Tech niques business in 2014, after completing his apprenticeship through Conestoga College. He started out working primarily in residential new builds. But, in the past year, he has been lean ing towards more custom work, such projects as patios, fireplaces, accent walls. “I have a huge passion for that,” he says. “It involves more fine design work and provides an op portunity to be free and creative.” Fireplaces – indoor and out door – and other forms of outside living spaces are the most common custom projects Symes sees. His most extensive project to date is a patio, bordered by two walls extending from a corner fire place. The brickwork on the back of the walls and fireplace features an intricate pattern.
This type of project requires a variety of skills, Symes says. For example, accurate measurements are required to ensure that the walls are the perfect height and that everything lines up. “You really have to focus your mind and your energy. It’s difficult, but I enjoy that,” he says. “And I get to design these creative pat terns. That’s really exciting to do.” While custom work is his passion, he gets a lot of calls for restoration – fixing cracks in foun dations, replacing bricks, rebuild ing chimneys. And, he still enjoys working on new homes. No job is too big or too small for Advanced Masonry Techniques. Right now, Symes is a oneman operation and that’s fine with him. “I like to work by myself because I’m really picky about the way things are done.” But he realizes that may change as he continues to grow his brand and expand his territory. Even now, he can get overloaded at times, he says. When the time comes to bring in some assistance, he says, he’ll be looking for some one who shares his endeavour for quality and his passion for stone. b

Acura’s impressive TLX opens the door to luxury segment
Volvo’s longtime passion for safety apparent in XC60
The TLX is the gateway to Acura’s luxury sedan lineup. This handsome sports sedan, with such upscale appointments as Jewel Eye LED headlamps and richly trimmed interior, offers entry-level buyers a taste of the premium segment without breaking the bank. In return, they are treated to a spacious front-wheel-drive sedan with impressive handling dynamics and performance, excellent ride comfort and a well-appointed cabin that is as quiet as a library. Among the numerous standard comfort, convenience and entertainment features included on the TLX are automatic climate control, Acura’s premium sound system with six speakers plus a subwoofer, speed-sensitive volume control, Bluetooth streaming audio, heated power-adjustable front seats (10-way adjustment, two-way power lumbar support and two memory settings on the driver’s seat; four-way power adjustable on the passenger’s seat), tilt and telescopic steering wheel with controls for hands-free mobile phone interface, multi-angle backup camera and more. Acura also offers an all-wheeldrive version of the TLX. The SHAWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) model, with a starting price of $40,690, includes an upgraded powertrain: a 3.5-litre aluminum V6 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting SportShift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. This engine produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft of torque.
If you’re contemplating the purchase of a compact SUV, Volvo’s XC60 is an excellent choice, especially for anyone shopping for a family vehicle. It offers generous cargo space, a roomy cabin and seats that deliver the comfort and support that are essential on long family outings. There are even available integrated dual-stage booster seats that pop out from the rear outboard seats. Of course, Volvo’s passion for safety means the XC60 is loaded with technologies and systems that provide superb protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the XC60 its highest rating (Good) for small- and moderate-overlap front crash protection. The XC60’s lineup of Drive-E four-cylinder powertrains delivers exhilarating performance while consuming less fuel and emitting fewer environment-damaging emissions. With all-wheel drive now available across the model range, drivers can drive with confidence, even in extreme conditions.

Hyundai has totally redesigned its hot-selling compact, the Elantra, and the result is a more stylish and refined sedan that’s earning accolades from consumers and reviewers alike. In fact, the new Elantra has been named by AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) as the best new small car for 2017. It also picked the Elantra as a finalist for its prestigious Canadian Car of the Year title. This sixth-generation iteration of the Elantra is slightly larger than its predecessor – 20 millimetres longer, 25 mm wider and five mm taller. Broadening its dimensions has resulted in a roomier cabin with increased rear-seat legroom as well as more space for cargo in the trunk. The all-new chassis is wrapped in sheet metal that’s shaped in a more conservative, but still stylish design. The Elantra is offered in a wide range of trim levels (and pricing), although all are powered by the same new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The base L trim includes a six-speed manual transaxle, but the rest of the lineup gets a new six-speed automatic transmission. The lineup tops out with the Ultimate Package at $28,799, which includes a host of high-tech features not typically offered in the compact segment.

Jaguar XE a prime contender in sporty luxury sedan segment The Jaguar XE is a new product for the prestigious brand – and it’s leaping into the thick of the very competitive compact luxury sport sedan segment. To its credit, Jaguar did its homework before unleashing the XE and the result is a car that may become the leader of the pack. It’s cleverly stylish, with plenty of Jaguar DNA apparent, ensuring it is a head-turner, yet it’s unique in its own skin. It also shares its weight-saving, aluminum-intensive architecture with several other vehicles in the Jaguar-Land Rover family. The XE is offered in three trim levels, starting with the base Premium model. Next up the ladder is the Prestige trim, with the lineup capped by an R Sport model that includes a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that cranks out 340 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. All XEs in Canada are fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and full-time all-wheel drive that in normal driving conditions directs about 90 per cent of the engine’s output to the rear wheels. That power split enhances the XE’s sporty-car feel, but if traction conditions warrant, the differential will shift up to 90 per cent to the front wheels to improve grip.

Unique marketing, refined vehicles highlight Genesis challenge in luxury segment There’s a new player in the premium brand market – Genesis Motors Canada – and it’s challenging the luxury segment leaders with world-class vehicles. But truly unique for this new offering is its “human-centred” purchase and ownership experience that empowers luxury vehicle customers in ways unique to the industry. For example, potential owners can schedule a “Genesis at Home” demonstration and vehicle test drive with a Genesis representative at a location of their choosing. They can even complete lease or finance paperwork, make a deposit, and place an order for a new vehicle through the digital platform from their home or office. Pricing for Genesis models is all-inclusive. It not only includes delivery and destination charges that other brands typically add on at purchase, but also provides complimentary scheduled maintenance and satellite radio subscription for five years or 100,000 km, plus up to 10 navigation software updates over five years. The Genesis at Home concierge service extends from the purchase process into the ownership period (five years/100,000 km.). Owners can have the vehicle picked up for scheduled maintenance, get a courtesy car and have their own vehicle returned when the servicing is complete. Currently, the Genesis lineup is comprised of two models – the flagship G90 full-size luxury sedan and its mid-size luxury sedan sibling, the G80, but the brand plans to expand to six models by 2021, including a sports coupe, smaller sedan and SUVs. All models will deliver outstanding driving dynamics and design and will come fully-equipped with standard technology and features expected in a luxury vehicle, including advanced safety systems, ultra-soft Nappa leather and HTRAC all-wheel drive. The G90 is already making its presence known. It’s one of five finalists – the others are the Bentley Bentayga, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S90/V90 – for the 2017 World Luxury Car title. The G90 - powered
by a new 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and advanced HTRAC allwheel drive system - is spacious, refined and wraps its occupants in one of the quietest, most luxurious interiors in the segment. It is fitted with a comprehensive array of standard safety technology, plus every imaginable convenience, comfort, infotainment and connectivity feature. It’s also available with a more powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine. The mid-size G80 sedan also offers a choice of two engines – a 3.8-litre V6 and the 5.0-litre V8. New XT5 well-equipped to be a worthy successor to SRX Cadillac’s all-new crossover, the XT5, has a lot to live up to as it rolls into the hot mid-size luxury CUV market. The XT5 is replacing the SRX, which happened to be Cadillac’s top-selling vehicle in Canada and the U.S. To maintain that sales momentum, Cadillac has created a vehicle with a more refined exterior design, a well-crafted interior with plenty of premium features, numerous advanced technologies and good overall performance. The open, airy cabin of the five-passenger XT5 is all new, compared to its predecessor, with 81 mm more rear-seat legroom and a second-row bench that slides fore and aft 140 mm. The 40/20/40-split rear seatback also reclines. Rather than trim the interior with moulded plastic panels, there’s real stitching and quality materials, including wood, aluminum and leather, everywhere. It all combines to give the cabin a premium feel. The only powertrain offered is a 3.6-litre V6 borrowed from the ATS and CTS sedans and upgraded to deliver 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque – sufficient to move the XT5 along at a brisk pace. The engine has been fitted with fuel-saving technologies, including cylinder deactivation that shuts down two cylinders when power demand permits, and a stop/ start that stops the engine when idling at a stop light, for example, then instantly re-fires the motor when it’s go time. They had their eye on the lot in Huron Woods for some time. It sits beside Pinery Provincial Park and is just steps from the gorgeous Lake Huron beach and its world-famous sunsets. "We fell in love with the tall pines and the proximity to the beach," Greg says. They built a couple of other houses in the area, inching closer to the dream lot, which was initially out of their price range. By 2011, the Vanhevels had the lot and the custom home to match the exquisite property. The four-bedroom single-storey residence has unique touches throughout - from beautiful custom cabinetry and wall units to hand-scraped engineered wood flooring. The home was designed and built with energy efficiency and the environment in mind. "I am a mechanical contractor and specialize in geothermal. Getting away from fossil fuels to help protect our environment is important to me for our children and grandchildren," Greg says. The four-season sunroom allows for solar power, no matter the time of year. The master bedroom has access to the sunroom and its private cedar deck. There's also a triple skylight in the large kitchen - where you'll find lovely granite counter tops and an island - and solar water heating panels on the roof. The circular staircase to the lower level leads to an exercise room, games room, family area, custom wet bar and more. A key feature in the lower level is the 8.5-foot ceilings and walkout area, complete with a hot tub. "There are a number of features in our house that we think are unique," Greg says, "but the one we couldn't live without is in-floor heat because of the comfort." As builders, Greg and Sharon finish one house and then start the design for the next, trying to be even more energy efficient as they go. They have a lot for the next residence and the plans are underway. While they hate to give up this beautiful home, they are excited about the next project. pring is traditionally the time when most people begin thinking about their gardens, but Paul and Anita VanAdrichem, owners of Westland Greenhouses in Grand Bend, think about gardening all year round. This is unique in an industry where most businesses shut down for the winter. When you hear the list of items they carry, it is no wonder they have become a destination for gardeners across southwestern Ontario. “We carry every plant you can think of,” Anita says. The lengthy list of products Westland Greenhouses carries includes an nuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, cacti and succulents, carnivores, herbs and herb planters, vegetables, a wide variety of indoor and outdoor décor, seeds, bulbs, fertilizers and pesticides. “No other garden centre carries as much selection as we do,” she adds.
With a petting farm, bird aviary and pond, Westland Greenhouses has also become a destination even for those not making a purchase. Many people come just to sit and relax. “There are always free cookies and coffee,” Anita says. Growing up as growers’ children prepared them for the hard work it takes to succeed. They came to Canada in 2000 after operating a similar business in their native Holland, which they ran for 10 years. Mike Holmes Jr. (MJ) is a professional contractor, television host, public speaker, educator, guest expert and online personality. He started working with his father – celebrity contractor Mike Holmes – when he was just 14 years old on the set of Holmes on Homes®. Today MJ focuses on a holistic approach to proper homebuilding that supports healthy living and stars in the newest edition of the Holmes series franchise, Holmes + Holmes, in which he and his dad transform his modest bachelor bungalow into a two-storey masterpiece.
Holmes Jr. has been working with his famous father for more than a dozen years, learning the trade and sharing the television spotlight, in shows like Holmes Makes It Right and Mike’s Ultimate Garage, a 2014 mini-series, where Junior and his sister, Sherry, created a man-cave garage for their dad. “I started working with my dad when I was 14 and haven’t looked back. I’m passionate about what I do and doing it right,” Holmes Jr. says. This year, father and son have launched a new partnership in Holmes and Holmes, a DYI Network series following the transformation of Mike Jr.’s 750-square-foot bungalow into a two-story home. Smythe’s career in interior design spans more than 15 years and, today, he is regularly seen hosting décor programs on HGTV. He also works with Sarah Richardson as an integral member of her design team. Talking with industry professionals about their renovation and landscaping plans allows consumers to hone their plans and ideas. A horticultural display will be an attraction for the gardeners and plant lovers in the crowd. And, in addition to the featured stars, there will be a speakers’ series, featuring local experts. “We’re working with community groups that involve the home,” Marshall says. Some will offer presentations. One of those is Habitat For Humanity, which has a longstanding relationship with Western Fair District. As
a yoga teacher at one of the city’s larger gyms, Jenny Hauser has access to many forms of fitness. After being diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her knees, the 56year old London woman decided that she “needed to find a more balanced exercise program that didn’t include any stress on the joints.” Hauser discovered deep water aquafit classes at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, so she works out there twice a week in addition to swimming laps, teaching yoga three times each week and taking two 45-minute walks with her dog every day. Like many Canadians, she’s been active all her life, enjoying cross country and downhill skiing, running, cycling and describes herself as an “avid walker.” Aquafit is often thought of as an easy workout but with many younger, fitter people pursuing alternative types of exercise in their 30s, 40s and 50s, what’s offered today isn’t you’re granny’s aquafit. And even if she is a granny, she’s a fit

and active one who wants a vigorous workout that pushes the limits without damaging her joints. Because of these changing demographics, the Aquatic Centre now offers a variety of new classes. “We started adding more intense classes a year and half ago because we saw more patrons who are younger coming back from maternity leaves and injuries attending aqua classes. They are bringing friends in who are getting back into exercise, too.” Several fitness centres in and around London offer both deep and shallow water classes. Both are kinder to ankle, knee and hip joints than land classes, but the deep water option puts no stress on these joints and can be a more intense core workout because of the need to stabilize oneself in the water. “I like deep water because it’s more challenging. You can’t cheat because you have to initiate movements with your body and can’t bounce off the (pool) floor,” says Timarra Milmine, who has been an aquafit instructor for

Her clients come because of injuries to their backs, limbs and shoulders, looking to recover from strokes, paralysis, from car accidents, work and sports injuries. “What is painful to do on land is easier here,” explains Dobkowski. There are stretching and workout stations - for spinal decompression and to work on balance, among others - in the pools and the staff is trained to work with clients in the water. Each client is fully assessed before starting treatment and some benefits packages cover treatments. A land gym adjacent to the two pools allows clients to start working toward getting back to regular workouts under the supervision of the two trained physiotherapists.

20 years and presently teaches at the YMCA’s Centre Branch. While being comfortable in the water is required, one doesn’t need to be a good swimmer. Deep water class participants often wear flotation belts and in shallow water classes, it’s easy to touch bottom. Aquafit is an effective form of exercise because it builds both strength and endurance. When doing cardio “in the water, it’s easier to get your heart rate up,” says Angela Swalwell, who teaches aqua classes at the Fitness Forum and has been an instructor for 25 years, “and you burn a lot of calories.” Moving in the water provides natural resistance training. “Aquafit is as good as or better than land group exercise because water has more resistance than air and everything is reversible. For instance, a bicep curl moving down is also a tricep curl,” says Milmine. Some classes – like aqua zumba – involve dance movements, which also provide a mental workout, as participants learn new routines and move to the lively music’s beat. Classes are also very social, providing opportunities to form new friendships. This is the case for Hauser, who says she’s made many pool acquaintances that she talks with before and after class, as well as another classmate with whom she’s formed an out-of-pool friendship. “Aquafitness meets the person where they are,” says Angela Waterfield, a long-time aqua instructor who
teaches at Goodlife. “It relieves anxiety and stress, in addition to physical exercise.” It’s good for those just getting into exercise, according to Michelle Kerr, who teaches both land and water group exercise programs for Goodlife. “Aquafit has a growing popularity for people who are unconditioned and self-conscious. There are no mirrors like in a land class. You don’t stand out as much in a group setting if you aren’t coordinated.” A challenging workout or one that’s designed to get you back in shape, working out in the water offers both. Best of all, you can lose weight while getting in shape. “It’s great for people who want to get lean because nothing builds muscle like working out in the water,” says Swalwell. n

There are both appetizer and main dish platters to try a variety of the fresh tastes of this island’s fare. Fire things up with a plate of flaming saganaki accompanied by a glass of tart Retsina wine. Across the Mediterranean Sea, Italians make their own pasta, just like Tuscano’s Pizzeria and Bistro. They serve it in a variety of forms with fresh, delicious sauces. Alternatively, try one of their enormous and tasty panzerottis. Heading to Asia, a stop into Mai’s Café and Bistro is a visit to flavour town. Mai’s Thai food – such as the green curry, pad Thai or mango chicken – are all taste treats. The tom yum and coconut soups warm up chilly spring lunches. You’ll be charmed by the atmosphere of this cozy eatery and its Thai-garbed servers. To taste the best of Vietnamese fare, enjoy dinner or lunch at Tamarine by Quynh Nhi. It is named for the tamarind fruit used in several traditional dishes that are served in clay hot pots. Start your meal with canh chua soup, also known as the Vietnamese version of hot and sour soup, to warm up from a chilly walk in the
core. The basil beef is also truly special. The elegance of regency India is expressed in the décor and stately manners of the waiters at Raja. Exotic offerings begin with a tray of spicy, savoury and sweet condiments are served with papadum, best consumed with a Indian Kingfisher beer. A little more adventurous? Ask for your butter chicken to be served extra spicy. The saag paneer is a vegetarian specialty that is delightful. Middle Eastern flavours are unleashed at Paramount Fine Foods. Dip enormous, football-shaped pitas - served right out of the oven - in fresh hummus to stave off hunger pangs. Try the mixed grill plate to enjoy a variety of meat offerings. The skewers of shish taouk and kafta will make your taste buds sing. The downtown fine dining scene has come alive with lively Latin American flavours at Che Resto Bar. The rib eye steak is pumped up with chimichurri sauce and is served with yucca fries, while the mole sauce on the roasted chicken is a savoury trip to South America. No trip around the world would be complete without heading to Africa for a safari of flavour. Using pieces of injera bread to scoop up spicy meat chunks or lentil and veggie mixes from the combo tray (order it to try a bit of everything) make dining at Addis Ababa Restaurant a kinetic experience. A
city of culture and counter culture, Denver is a study in contradictions. This makes it an exciting and interesting destination on its own or as a great side trip for your annual ski holiday. History, sports, art, politics and pot all fit seamlessly to define the mile-high city. If you have only two or three days to visit there, here are some not-to-bemissed highlights. Lodging within walking distance of the action when you’re on a limited time budget is smart and the Capitol Hill Mansion Inn Bed and Breakfast combines a gentle old-world setting with modern conveniences. Located in the museum
district – not far from the Molly Brown house – this B&B is operated by dynamic father/daughter duo Carl Schmidt and Bailey Claire. Originally from the Texas Gulf Coast, they bring southern charm and a strong sense of fun to one’s stay at their inn. With eight spacious, gracious guest rooms, the Inn was built in the late 1800s. Its beautiful stone façade is typical of the many splendid, historic buildings you’ll see as you stroll surrounding streets. In addition, Schmidt is a chef and breakfast includes southern specialties, such as jalapeno soufflé. Make your first stop just down the hill at the Colorado State Capital building to
see the gold-plated dome and marble and onyx accents – all mined in mineral-rich Colorado. Informative tours are free. Next stop is the 16th Street ‘Mall’. This open air shopping area features 42 outdoor cafes. Sipping some suds – there are many excellent local craft beers available on tap at the various eateries – while observing Segway-riding officers patrolling the car-free street provides great lunchtime entertainment. Housed in what once was Denver’s tallest office building and a former theatre, the Paramount Café offers a fresh twist on local favourites served in a retro cool atmosphere. Free, frequently running shuttles carry

Denver’s version of Union Station anchors one end of the Mall and is the transportation hub of the city. Take a break at the Terminal Bar, with 30 beers on tap or perk up with a coffee from the Pigtrain Coffee Company. Both great ways to replenish your energy for the hike back to the historic district to see Molly Brown’s house. Christened ‘unsinkable,’ her real name was Margaret Tobin. While Molly Brown did survive the Titanic disaster, her real fame was as an early suffragette and as one of the first women in the U.S. to run for public office. The historic home on display was one she and husband J.J. Brown purchased as they amassed wealth from Colorado’s silver and gold booms. It is open for tours Tuesday to Sunday and is located just one and a half blocks from the Capitol Hill Mansion Inn. Many food options are within walking distance of these lodgings, too. One of those is Prohibition, a 1920s-inspired speakeasy pub and contemporary eatery known for its cocktails. It was once featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with chef Guy Fieri, and is only three blocks north of the Mansion. One of Denver’s favourite mustexperience food options is Voodoo Doughnut. This wildly popular bakery prides itself in fresh and eclectic doughnut styles featuring toppings such as M&Ms and Froot Loops. No visit to Denver is complete without visiting Sports Authority Field. Formerly known as Mile High Stadium, it is home to the 2016 Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. The tour takes visitors onto the playing field and gives a good look behind the scenes, with a tour of the locker room, media box and VIP lounges. Maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of retired quarterback Peyton Manning. In 2014, Colorado legalized the use and possession of marijuana and visiting one of the several shops which sell different varieties could be an interesting part of your visit to the Mile High City. The shops are clean, bright spaces that one must prove age to enter. Products are labelled in display cases and staff persons are generally knowledgeable and helpful. n

Approaching the summit A London Chamber of Commerce initiative plans to take local businesses to a new level of growth. The chamber has heard from members who own small- and medium-sized enterprises that it is sometimes difficult to expand. “Both the government and private sector agree that if we don’t find a way to scale up these smaller businesses, our economy is going to suffer as a result, and it’s suffering as we speak,” says local chamber CEO Gerry McCartney. The result is an event planned for April 4 called Summit. Touted as a first-of-its-kind event, Summit brings together business owners to hear success stories and to find both knowledge and inspiration. “So what our attempt to do here is, to not rely on government or blame government, or find solutions from government. Rather we want to put some solid examples in front of our business community of people who have done it already, in spite of what the circumstances are,” McCartney says. The event will be held at the Grand Theatre, which he believes is an ideal location for creativity to percolate. “If we’re going to do something unconventional - go to an unconventional location. Let’s go to a place where nobody expects to have a business event.” The keynote speaker is Paul Desmarais III of Power Corporation. “His talk will be all about innovation … to enable the smaller companies to become bigger,” McCartney says. The other speakers are: Brian Semkowski, serial entrepreneur and philanthropist; Paul Seed, of StarTech. com; Christine Jones-Harris, of Jones Packaging; and Michael Schmalz of Digital Extremes. The moderator of the event is Holden Rhodes, one of the founders of Carproof. McCartney says the speakers will be seated in what will resemble a fireside chat configuration. “It will be very interactive, very personal and allow the audience to ask a lot of questions.”

The Chamber is also hoping to provide about 75 to 100 complimentary tickets to business students from Fanshawe College and Western University. “There’s a particular body of students there that we want to have at this event, who can learn from these experts how they did it. Hopefully, we’ll be able to keep those students in London,” he says. It’s hoped Summit will become an annual event. “We’re putting the pieces in place to make sure it’s sustainable and we do it year after year.” n
