EDITOR’S note

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT

A

friend recently told me about her fear of heights; it seems to stem from her experiences on a childhood trip when her mother held on to her and her brother’s ankles as they laid near the edge to look over a precipice. Her mother’s fear of heights has affected my friend for six decades. She feels that this is an insurmountable fear and she doesn’t use her apartment balcony much. I was surprised by this because this friend is fearless in most regards. A very independent woman she’s fully in control of her life in every regard, with a successful career, many friends and acquaintances and a loving family. In 2015 my husband and I took our first extended tour of the U.S.; one stop was the Grand Canyon. My husband gleefully jumped up and down on the edge of the Canyon, saying, “Take my picture; take my picture.” While I was stuck standing a few feet back from the edge, except in the small area of it that has a rail at the edge. That bothered me, so I wanted to get over it by exposing myself to more situations involving heights. Moving to the 19th floor of a downtown building has certainly helped that. I go out on the balcony and look down almost every day. I look down when we are in tall buildings while traveling; I walk up to edges of scenic bridges, lookouts etc. when I get the chance. I breathe – deeply and a lot – while doing so and, frankly, I don’t love it. But I’m hoping that my next ziplining experience is

unlike the one I did in Mexico 10 years ago during which I screamed so loud that my throat hurt for a couple of days after. I didn’t know, however, that I was using some of the techniques recommended by the sources in our story on page 54. What I did was an instinctual way of dealing with my fear, but had I to do it over, I’d have sought professional help for this as they suggest. What are your fears and how are you conquering them? Do you too want to live large and not be held back? I’ll let you know how it goes after my next zip line experience on our Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/lifestylemagazineonline/ Here’s to life, the journey full of fun and (hopefully) less fear!

homestyle Working on a spec home allows, former Londoner Aaron Brier an extra measure of creativity and the space to allow his vision to be realized. A two-storey foyer, vaulted ceilings and oversized windows enhance the bright, open spaces of this home.

A HOME FORMER LONDONER BUILDS LUXURIOUS INFILL HOME By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A

two-storey luxury home sits on a lot just under half an acre, with a rear outdoor living space and terraced back yard. The yard is bordered by a creek with a small private island. It might sound like a country estate but this latest offering from Nest Fine Homes is located on a quiet crescent in the heart of southeast Oakville. “It is unusual to find a property like this in a city like Oakville,” says Aaron Brier, owner of Nest Fine Homes, who admits he had his eye on

the infill site for several years. Once he acquired the property, he put his creative architectural muscles to work to build a spec home incorporating a plethora of “wow” features. A former Londoner, Brier builds homes for clients and on spec across southwestern Ontario. He says the spec homes allow him an extra level of creativity. “I can have the vision and just do it.” The Oakville home’s distinctive features begin at the front entrance with a 1,200-pound, 10foot mahogany pivot door, attached at top and bottom with no side hinges. Inside, a focal point of the vaulted two-storey foyer is a wall-art highlight – a 40-foot hand-painted koi fish – is a nod to the property’s creek-side location. 

I wanted the home to reflect modern nature, rather than Mother Nature.” AARON BRIER, OWNER, NEST FINE HOMES

“I wanted the home to reflect modern nature, rather than Mother Nature,” Brier says. “And, I tried to incorporate a Japanese flair with the koi.” To the left of the foyer the dining room is set off by 20 hand-blown glass balls. In shades of red, purple and blue, they are suspended from the ceiling at various heights and illuminated by twinkling fairy lights. 10 Lifestyle March/April 2020

Brier looks at lighting in layers. In addition to the unique dining room illumination, LED chandeliers and other ceiling fixtures, he’s incorporated up-lighting in floors, as well as small star lights set into the hallway walls at knee height. “Those options are popular for ambient lighting at night when not having the bright lights on.” The great room opens to a gourmet kitchen with custom cabinetry, porcelain

counters and, Brier says, “a secret door.” Positioned beside the built-in fridge/freezer, the door looks like just another cabinet, he says, but it opens into a butler’s pantry. Beyond that is a laundry room and mudroom. This area also accesses the two-car garage. The main level also has a front office with built-in cabinets and shelving. an ideal space for those who work from home, according to Brier. The upper level includes three frontfacing bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. Across the back, the spacious master suite features a Juliette balcony, a sizeable dressing room and spa-like ensuite bathroom, with a freestanding tub and glassed-in shower. The lower level is finished with a recreation room and bar that features a walkout to a lower terrace. There’s an adjacent glassed-in exercise room and radiant in-floor heating throughout the level. This level also incorporates an elaborate wine cellar. The side walls are backlit gold glass, complemented by a stone wall of limestone matching the stone used on the home’s front exterior. “It’s a nice atmosphere,” Brier says. The covered outdoor living space across the back of the home includes a kitchen and sitting area with a stone linear fireplace. “It’s very private,” Brier says. “It’s like being in Muskoka, where you don’t have any neighbours, but here you’re right in the suburbs.” The back yard is terraced with tiers of structural armour stone, brought in from an Orillia quarry. Stone steps extend from an upper garden to the lower lawn, which borders the creek. A small bridge connects to the private island. Brier notes that, while the creek is quite shallow during most of the year, there are 60 to 70 species of small fish, creating a natural fishpond. “And you don’t have to tend it, so it’s great for kids.” Another advantage, Brier says, is that the house is entirely maintenance-free. It includes extended overhangs, which he says are “a great design feature because you can block some of the sun coming in the windows and have them open even on the stormiest days for air flow.” The siding is black steel. The material under the soffits looks like strips of cedar but it is metal longboard, which is durable and never requires painting or staining. “Everything is aluminum or metal, so what you see now will be what it looks like in 20 years,” Brier says. “It’s clean and fresh for years to come.” n

HOME AND GARDEN SHOW BRINGS THE SPRING

NEW, NOVEL and noteworthy

W

By Wayne Newton

eary of winter and wistful for spring? There’s an event for that. The annual Home and Outdoor Show at Western Fair District promises to chase away any seasonal blues with bright ideas for a beautiful season ahead. “There is something for everyone this year,” said Greg Blanchard, director of marketing and communications for Western Fair District. “The Home Depot Kids Workshop returns. There will also be cycling display with an educational component to it. Our Landscaping Lane will feature a 20-foot flowering tree as the centrepiece this year. It will be a

fantastic photo op for guests and will bring the smell and sight of spring to act as their inspiration.” The show, being held April 3-5 in the Western Fair District Agriplex, is much-anticipated opportunity to prospect for new ideas to personalize and improve indoor and outdoor spaces by taking in a variety of free-with-admission seminars and speaking directly with experts representing businesses from Toronto to Windsor. “We have thousands of visitors come through our show each year,” Blanchard said. “Saturday in particular seems to attract families eager to research purchases

while enjoying the experience of this family-friendly event.” The show, spread out over 100,000 square feet of exhibition space, features more than 200 exhibitors. They include landscapers, window and door companies, tree and flower centres, furniture vendors, and health and wellness experts. It’s a mixture to which show organizers give careful consideration with an eye for what interests consumers from the region. “We are looking for a good mix of indoor renovation needs, paint trends, doors and windows,” he said. “In addition, we are looking for outdoor updates including gardening, landscaping and  March/April 2020

eco-friendly trends. This year, we also hope to have an area supporting local artisans and craft vendors.” Over the years, there’s been a noticeable increase in environmentally sound approaches to gardening and outdoor spaces. Sustainable gardens and environmental responsibility – those small, everyday things everyone can do – are important topics at the show along with new colours, accent ideas, and outdoor activities. Vertical gardening, both for houseplants and outdoor vegetables and flowers, is of particular interest for urban gardeners working in small spaces. Outside, it can mean using wooden fences or garage walls for planters. There’s also a chance to upcycle by using materials such as wooden pallets lined with landscaping fabric and filled with soil. Vertical gardening – or its cousin, hanging planters - can also be used to create privacy on verandahs. “We have found that traditional needs remain the same as people continue to purchase, renovate and personalize their spaces, but there is high interest in green gardening and eco innovations and people want to support their local businesses,” Blanchard said. Most – 72 per cent of survey respondents – who attend the show are over age 45 and are there to learn and research. The show is not just aimed at property owners – renters will find inspiration - and people don’t have to wait to make purchases. While research is top-of-mind for those attending the Home and Outdoor Show, there are products and services to buy on the spot. “Retail is available,” he said. “People will be able to purchase flowers, trees, furniture, etc. One of the great features of this show is how it helps homeowners and renters connect with products and services for their home renovation projects.” Admission for adults is $10 in advance, $12 at the door. n

But something is missing – splashes of colour everywhere provided by the greenery that surrounds resort pools. Whether you want to mirror a Caribbean getaway or just want to add the lush colours and textures of tropical climes to your yard, it’s possible to surround yourself with the hot pinks and luminescent oranges, shiny leaves and layered bark trunks of tropical plants though you reside in southwestern Ontario. According to Michael Pascoe, academ-

ic coordinator of academic apprenticeship in the horticulture department at Fanshawe College, his crew of students at the Mac Cuddy Botanic Garden uses several methods to include tropical plants in the landscaping of that extensive property in Strathroy. The most dramatic is plunge planting. A hole is dug that is larger and deeper than the pot that holds the plant. The pot and its plant – often a palm, fichus, rubber tree, banana, agave or cac- 

Porous (not glazed) clay pots, with a hole in the bottom, are best for this as they breath and allow water to pass through it. “This really surprises people when they come for the annual open house at the garden. They ask, ‘How are you able to grow palm trees and cacti in Ontario?’” says Pascoe. (This year’s event is June 6 and 7.) Adding dimension to your deck or patio with tropicals planted in glazed pots of varying sizes and complementary colours to create a visual theme is another method that Pascoe favours. Planting smaller vining tropicals around the bases of larger ones provides additional colour and variety.

Employing hanging baskets of tropical plants to bring colours and textures to eye level and above is the final method that Pascoe’s crew uses. He advises that using large peat moss-lined baskets is best. Caring for tropicals once they’re out in the yard is straightforward. According to Pascoe, plunged pots don’t need to be watered as rainfall will normally take care of their needs. Potted plants will need to be watered more often when the temperatures climb in July and August. He recommends soaking pots with water, letting the excess absorb and then soaking again to ensure they get enough water. Baskets will often need even more water as they are more exposed to light and air caus- 

ing water to evaporate more quickly. Pascoe recommends fertilizing bi-weekly in the spring and weekly during flowering season with a 20-2020 fertilizer. The only thing tricky about using tropical plants in your yard is introducing them to the outdoors. Though they are from warmer climates, they are easily sunburnt, according to Pascoe. So slowly bring them outside, with the first stop in a limited light outdoor environment, like a garage with the door open or a covered patio after the threat of frost is over and then moving gradually from more shaded to sunnier areas. Janine Glover, owner of A&M Garden Centre, agrees that gauging light levels for tropicals is important. “They are sensitive to light. Some are shade plants and others love full sun. Not all do, even though they are native to hot places. Check the labels for preferred light before placing them in your yard or garden.” Glover enjoys the variety of available tropical plants. She says that Dipladenia is a very popular one and surprisingly hearty. “I have people come into the centre saying that theirs lasted until first snow.” Other flowering favourites include Mandevilla, Bird of Paradise, Hibiscus, Gardenia and Bougainvillea. “The majesty palm will grow to 10 or 12 feet over the years and does very well in patio pots,” recommends Glover. “The tropical red banana provides colour both summer and winter with its deep red/green leaves and grows very quickly.” Why book a Caribbean vacation when you can enjoy one in your own backyard by adding beautiful tropical plants? n

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS TOGETHER

he year was 1969. NASA put astronauts on the moon for the first time. The Beatles gave their final live performance. A gallon of gas cost $0.35. The average cost of a home in Canada was around $26,000. And Noreen and Alan Harris moved into their first Sifton Property home in London, Ontario. “We were living in St. Thomas near railway tracks, and it was loud. Our kitchen was small and old. We had our first son but wanted to have more children, so we decided to move,” said Noreen. Why Sifton’s rental townhomes at Berkshire Village? “It was convenient to downtown. We felt it was safe, and it had all those club facilities,” added Noreen. “Besides, my husband wasn’t handy, so moving into a place where someone else looked after the maintenance made sense,” she said with a laugh. In 1969, Berkshire Village was considered cutting edge and the Harris family was one of the first to move in. “The Sifton family took an approach to create a community that would engage families and provide them with comfortable and affordable accommodations,” said Brandi McIlvenny, director, Residential Rentals at Sifton Properties Limited. “The Berkshire Club was at the heart of the community. Although it has evolved over the years to reflect the needs of residents, that hasn’t really changed.” As the Harris family grew, so did their accommodations. “We moved up to a

three bedroom, with three bathrooms,” said Harris. “I always joked and called it the ‘high-rent district’.” Theirs became a family like many others, with the kids and their friends always coming and going. A lot of family time was spent poolside. There were birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, births and celebrations of life. When Alan passed away six years ago and Noreen needed to downsize, Sifton was there. “We like to help people like Noreen age in place. If they get to a point where they can no longer take their garbage out, we’ll do that for them. It’s the small things, the human touch, that really puts Sifton in the forefront as leaders as property managers. It’s about taking that extra step, really humanizing their experience with us,” said McIlvenny. Fifty years later, Noreen continues to live at Berkshire Village. She’s the first tenant to reach that milestone in a Sifton rental home. In honour of the occasion, Sifton provided her with new appliances, a family dinner at her restaurant of choice and a monetary gift. She was also recognized at Sifton’s Quarter Century dinner alongside neighbours and friends. “Mowbray, my dad, created the Quarter Century Club. He wanted to acknowledge those tenants who have been with us a significant period of time,” said Richard Sifton, president and CEO of Sifton Properties Limited. “We continue to recognize families when they reach certain milestones, including tenants like Noreen who have been with Sifton for 50 years. Not many companies can say that!” n

any football fans have experienced the fun of tailgating but if you haven’t, going with a large group of people on a bus tour with all the food prepared for you and an open bar at the ready, you’ll be tailgating in style and ready to watch your favourite team on the gridiron. Day trips from London are a great way to experience the many sights and events available because of the city’s favourable geographic area: situated near three Great Lakes, a couple of hours drive from two different major U.S. cities with sports teams and Canada’s largest metropolis and its theatre and sports offerings. Booking a bus tour means that someone else does the driving, deals with border crossings, makes all the admission arrangements and makes sure food and fun are part of the deal. Two local companies that offer day trips to theatre, music and sports fans – as well as those looking for something

30 Lifestyle March/April 2020

new to do within easy reach of London – are Erie Fun Tours and Big Game Sports Trips. Based in Port Stanley, Jen Slack is using her background in marketing – gained from her years working at various area radio stations – to build Erie Fun Tours, which she started in the autumn of 2018. She launched with a bus tour to the wildly popular musical Come From Away and continues to offer Toronto theatre trips. One of Slack’s personal favourite tours is to Caledonia where the group boards a boat for a Grand River cruise. “They get off the bus and there’s a concert by the Blazing Fiddles, with some lively music, and they have refreshments. Then they get on the boat to go down the river. There’s a three-course lunch. The boat’s balcony provides great views and you learn a lot from the narration about the history of the area,” she says. Other bus/boat combinations are trips to board the Duc D’Orleans in Sarnia for an afternoon or evening of musical enjoyment on the St. Clair River and lunch at the River Crab restaurant in Michigan. A passport is necessary for this one. Going to some sporting events with

Big Game Road Trips also requires a passport or other documentation to cross the border. Greg Matthison started the company in 2013 by offering tours for NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL fans. In the spring and summer, those who follow the Toronto FC and Blue Jays can avoid Toronto’s notorious traffic stress by taking a luxury bus there. In the fall and winter, football fans can enjoy the ride in a luxury bus with a washroom and video movies, while avoiding possible weather driving concerns, parking and border issues. As part of the package, fans get the full tailgate party experience – with unlimited food (grilled favourites) and adult beverages –

and tickets to the game. While many from the London area follow Buffalo and Detroit teams, others go to root for the franchises against whom they are playing. “The popularity of these trips really depends on the strength of the Bills’ and Lions’ schedules. Later in the season, Detroit is the bigger draw because it’s closer and it's an indoor stadium," says Matthison. The biggest trip the company has organized was a three-bus tour to Detroit to see the Maple Leafs play in 2018. “We could have sold more spots if we’d had more tickets to the game,” explains Matthison. Because of the cost of tickets at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Big Game Road Trips organizes excursions to see the team when they play in Detroit. With the Raptors’ first NBA Championship getting basketball fans excited, the company is organizing a trip to see the team play this year. “We’ve tried basketball in the past, along with racing, other soccer and baseball teams but the demand just wasn’t there,” he explains. Both companies continue to expand their repertoires. Slack is eager for input and seeks suggestions for new destinations at http://www.eriefuntours.com/contact.html. While most of the tours leave from London, she contemplates offering weekly trips from Port Stanley to see area attractions. These are intended to appeal to the village's cottage community and summer residents. In addition, Slack offers private tours for groups with special areas of interest. n

Jen had great suggestions and put together a really fun itinerary for us. We went to a couple wineries, some cute little shopping spots, had a lovely lunch and dinner. It was so much fun and relaxing to be taken care of and not have to drive around to each location.”

BOUNCE INTO SPRING

Black, brown and blue are safe bets for winter but a new season asks for new pieces to spruce up the staples in our wardrobes. As temperatures start to warm, we long to shed our winter weary togs in favour of brighter colours. Local retailers answer the call with soft pastels and bright hues that pair well with darker colours, while adding the spark we crave. Mint and magenta; cerulean and cerise; blush and butter are variations on the usual tones. Prints favour paisleys and flowered patterns as we look toward nature for inspiration. Winter is on the way out and spring is just over the horizon, so lighten the mood and brighten the wardrobe.

GOTTA GO...

PORT STANLEY’S VACATION-AS-LIFE COMMUNITY By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

The Wastell’s concept of adding a desirable beach-centric community to the village of Port Stanley fits with its lakeside identity of bringing the sun, sand and surf all summer long. It is positioned for those wishing an active lifestyle, often seen in southern communities, but who wish to live in southwestern Ontario. The recently upgraded pier and surrounding waterfront area add to the desirability of the area, providing additional walking areas and green spaces.

BEACHES. GOLF. A CHARMING WATERFRONT VILLAGE. If that’s your dream for a summer getaway or a year-round home, you don’t have to look to cottage country or the southern U.S. London’s Wastell Homes is developing Kokomo Beach Club, a resort-style community offering all that and more in the Lake Erie village of Port Stanley. Owners Doug and Sue Wastell were inspired by the gated resort communities they visited in Florida and set out to bring a similar concept to the Ontario market. “Our vision for Kokomo is to create a vibrant, amenity-packed community for people who are looking for active lifestyles,” Doug says. The George Street community of 500 residences – single-detached homes and

condominium suites – will feature areas of parkland and walking trails connecting to the neighbouring Kettle Creek Golf Course. A focal point will be its own community centre with an outdoor pool, pickle ball court and playground, plus a fitness centre, yoga studio, games room and other gathering spaces. There’s easy access to the Blue Flag Main Beach, and it is a short walk to the quieter and less-populated Erie Rest Beach via Old River Road, just across George Street. The village’s downtown core with its shops and restaurants is also within easy walking distance. The Wastells felt their vision for the community they wanted to build fit seamlessly

TOP Kokomo Beach’s active lifestyle amenities include areas of parkland and walking trails that connect to the neighbouring Kettle Creek Golf Course. RIGHT Exhibiting a relaxed beachy cottage look, a focal point of the development will be its community centre, featuring a pickleball court, outdoor pool, fitness centre, yoga studio and games room. with the village’s artistic, eclectic atmosphere. “Port Stanley is the perfect setting for Kokomo Beach Club,” Sue says. “The beaches are beautifully maintained and there are amazingly diverse food options and great retail shops. We also love how tucked away the town is, but still easily accessible to larger urban areas and the 401 highway,” she adds. “It’s an excellent alternative to Muskoka.” The couple also recognized the village’s rich history and character. “We tried to pay homage to Port’s quaint charm,” Sue says, citing architectural features like

Bahama shutters and soft pastel colours on the houses’ exterior siding. The floor plan names like The Sand and streets named for significant historical places or moments are a tip of the hat to the town’s heritage. For example, The Promenade, a street that backs onto a wooded area of the site, is a nod to the famous Stork Club dance pavilion that once graced the big beach. In its heyday, a nickel gained one entrance to its promenade to watch the dancers, while a few cents more was required to get onto the dance floor. The community is now building its first  March/April 2020

Even if there is wiggle room in the price of your new home, no one likes sticker shock. “When you tour our model homes, everything on view is incorporated in our all-inclusive price. What you see is what you get,” says Dave Stimac, president of the Ironstone Building Company in London.

Rather than pre-sell townhomes and single homes, Ironstone builds, then sells, in several desirable communities in London. The company incorporates the most popular trends and different neutral colour palettes to suit any décor. Stimac invites, “Choose the home you prefer at the location you love. Then start packing.”

“We take out the unknown factor so you can maintain the price point you have personally set. We deliver on budget because there are upgrades already included in the original price.”

Ironstone’s latest community, Summerside Trail, is in a well established area near an environmentally protected green space and is certified Energy Star, Stimac notes. “This mature neighbourhood is now being reinvigorated with the addition of new contemporary single homes.” By eliminating the time and expense typically required for upgrades,

Ironstone keeps its costs down and passes on savings to its clients. “Our Ironclad Pricing means we deliver on our commitments on time and on budget. FACING FEARS OVERCOMING THAT WHICH HOLDS US BACK By Jill Ellis-Worthington

No matter how they arise within us, defeating one’s fears and fighting back through the dark is tough.

54 Lifestyle March/April 2020

Y

ou may feel like the retired military serviceman, who was experiencing highway driving anxiety but needed to be able to transport his children between London and nearby larger centres. He sought treatment with Mary Rodenhurst, a social worker psychotherapist in private practice, and eventually overcame this fear. “Fear is a real bully and can force you to make your world smaller and smaller,” she says. “This is a strong, capable individual who was unable to do one of the things he really needed to do because of fear. The poison is the cure.” To get over it, you often have to “do the very things that you don’t want to do to desensitize yourself: exposure-response prevention,” she adds.

To do this, he started driving to the outskirts of London, then on sideroads outside the city for increasingly longer distances, then to the highway on-ramp. He was able to drive for longer periods on the highway but needed to use techniques to deal with his anxiety, like breathing exercises, visualization, mindfulness and meditation. He learned how to challenge the distorted thoughts. Tamelynda Lux, a certified hypnosis practitioner, lists public speaking as the number one fear for which her clients are seeking help. “They fear getting up in front of a group to give a presentation; it’s often career-related. Occasionally I’ll have a best man or father of the bride or groom at a wedding come in as well. Fear of spiders, fear of flying and fear of highway driving (after having had an accident) are listed as the other top fears her clients have.

Dr Moore.pdf

“Everyone will have a different base for where fear comes from. It could be recent or could be past history. The wonderful thing with hypnosis combined with coaching is that you don’t have to revisit the trauma to overcome it,” Lux explains. She explains that “hypnosis is a technique to get them (clients) to tap into their subconscious and use their inner strengths to deal with the challenging issue or concern. The client is always in control and won’t do or say anything he or she doesn’t want to.” Lux is trained to work with those dealing with trauma and says various techniques can be employed to help. “You had your calmness before the trauma. There’s a trigger, a stimulus, and a reaction. But there’s a space – a nanosecond – between the stimulus and the panic attack and the tools within hypnosis and coaching help find that nanosecond to build on the positive and regain that calmness.” According to Dr. J. Bruce Morton, professor of psychology and cognitive neuroscience at Western University, fears can manifest in objects, social interactions or situations. He adds that the intensity varies between people, “often dependent on the development of the brain around fear. (It is) often constitutional, which means formed through interaction of their experiences and their own brain chemistry.” No matter the source, the response is often the same – fear – and it can limit how you live your life. He recommends working with a therapist to learn coping strategies, like breathing and relaxation exercises, and self-talk to use with incremental exposures to overcome your particular fear. He gives an example of the latter: “I’m in the elevator and experiencing fear. Do I really think I’m going to die?” 

FACING FEARS ~ Continued from page 55 Morton reminds us, “Fear is actually a good thing because it helps us. Not having fear can get you killed.” Learning to control it and not let it control us is the key. n

CALM THROUGH BREATHING Certified hypnosis practitioner Tamelynda Lux uses this technique with clients and recommends it for working through fears and dealing with stress. She adds that it is also good for sleepless nights. “The Vagal Breathing Technique can calm and relax your body’s vagus nervous system. The vagus nerve is basically listening to the way we breathe, and it sends the brain and the heart whatever message our breath indicates. Breathing slowly, for instance, reduces the oxygen demands of the heart muscle (the myocardium), and our heart rate drops. So, when we breathe slowly, the heart slows, and we relax.”

CONTINENTAL HAIR IS A FRIEND INDEED

f you are experiencing the emotional trauma of hair loss, Continental Hair is a beacon of light in the shadows of despair. About 30 per cent of females deal with thinning hair because of medical conditions or genetics, and it can be traumatic. “When you have hair loss, you are thinking about it from the moment you wake up. It can control your life,” says Candace Hamilton, manager of Continental Hair in Sarnia. The wig and partial hair piece company was founded in Toronto, and the Sarnia division, now beginning their third year, attracts clients from across Southwestern Ontario. “We are here to support a woman, whatever her journey has been. Continental Hair is a safe, private and supportive environment for a woman to explore options in wigs or a partial hair piece called a postiche, which is a custom-made, daily-wear hair replacement product for those with thinning hair. It adds up to 20 per cent more volume and is worked in with a client’s natural hair, Hamilton explains. Made from virgin human hair from Europe, it can be coloured, highlighted and styled. “It is so seamless and it’s lightweight. It just snaps in and off you go for the day,” she says. Hamilton was a client who saw the difference Continental’s products made in women’s lives. She struggled with thinning hair after a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, an endocrine system disorder. Hamilton feels she has a kinship with her clients. “I can relate to these women because I had a journey of frustration and financial devastation trying to find products that looked natural and are comfortable,” she says. “After I got my first human hair wig, it was life changing. Now I not only have a wig for special occasions, I also wear a postiche for day to day living. I find the postiche light, cool, and seamless.” Continental Hair’s consultations are free and last up to two hours. Past the reception area, the doors are closed

Candace Hamilton offers human hair wigs and postiches at Continental Hair in Sarnia.

and controlled by staff. This is because of the difficulty some women have in showing their balding head. “A client can have a rush of panic during consultation because she will have to reveal her head,” Hamilton says. A client is also encouraged to bring someone for support - a partner, friend, mother. Hamilton will talk about the products available and what will work best for each woman and then provide a quote. “I encourage them to think about the product because it is an investment and I don’t want them to take it lightly.” Pricing starts at $1,900 for human hair wigs and a postiche starts at $2,800. It will last two to three years, if cared for properly. Hamilton adds, “We have a selection of wigs available that are blends and

synthetics for the budget-conscious client. But we are a human hair specialty studio and known worldwide for our expertise.” The services at the studio include washing and styling, adding colour and highlights. That’s where Hamilton’s right-hand woman Sara Portingale comes in. With 15 years’ experience as a hair stylist, Portingale knows how to make a women’s hair her crowning glory. “I focus on the consultation and guiding the client, and Sara takes it from there with colour and style,” Hamilton says. Whether you need a little or a lot, Continental Hair is there to guide you, empower you and ease you through your personal hair loss experience with confidence and grace. n

P

rom, graduation, a wedding, an evening on the town: when that perfect dress is called for, women are increasingly turning to London’s Juniper Dress Boutique. “We have the right dress for every occasion,” says owner Jennifer Bibbings. “We have our more casual day dress collection, our evening and cocktail gowns and options for prom and grad.” But an area that is growing quickly today is wedding apparel, from bridal gowns to mother-of-the-bride/groom dresses. “This isn’t a bridal boutique, but we have beautiful bridal selections,” Bibbings says, citing dresses pulled from the prom and evening collections. “We’re fortunate to have these designers, chosen for their unique style and quality. That’s given us really

well-rounded and more distinct options for brides.” The concept for a store exclusively marketing dresses occurred to Bibbings as she shopped with her daughter for her Grade 8 graduation. She called on her past retail experience, operating a home accent store in Ottawa, and opened the Fanshawe Park Road shop in 2012. It took off from the start and now draws a regional clientele ranging from Sarnia to Stratford to Goderich. Two years ago, 500 square feet was added to the original 1,500 to create additional display and storage space. Bibbings attributes this success to her staff’s dedication to providing quality one-on-one service and their taking the time to ensure the customer leaves with the perfect purchase. For example, Juniper Dress Boutique

has the option to special order. While on-floor samples are available for ready-to-wear purchase, clients can order the dress in their size and choose from colours offered by the designer. Customers often bring in a wish list but if that dress isn’t on the floor, that’s when store manager Ashley Lavell and assistant manager Cindy Tarevski search out options and come up with choices. “It’s a personal shopping flavour,” Bibbings says. “Customers develop a relationship with their sales rep as they collaborate to hone their vision and consider all available options to realize it. They appreciate this experience and that satisfaction spreads by wordof-mouth. That’s really been largely responsible for bringing our business to this level.” n

Whether the customer is looking for a tailored business suit or something suitable for the golf course, a casual get-together or a night on the town, Ofori says Richard’s can meet the demand. The business was launched as a specialty store for tailored business wear in 2017, when owner Richard Musah decided to take his passion for men’s fashion to the retail market. He initially sourced a line of clothing from a Turkish company, but a year later changed course and began importing high-end Italian brands and branched out into a wider variety of styles. “We started with men’s tailored clothing, suit and tie,” Ofori says. “But then we broke down some barriers and transformed ourselves.” Today the store carries a wide range of casual wear from slacks and jeans to sport shirts and jackets, targeting a niche market of upwardly mobile professionals. They carry an array of name brands such as Patrick Assaraf, Alex Ingh, Corniche, Ettinger and even handmade leather belts by Bench Craft. Ofori says, that these brands are not available at other menswear stores in the London area, a factor that sets Richard’s apart. Another distinctive factor, he says, is extensive customer service. Richard’s offers made-to-measure suits from Toronto-based Antonacci Clothes Ltd. The measurements are sent to Antonacci along with the customer’s choices of all elements, from the fabric down to the buttons. Attention to detail and quality is reflected in every aspect of the downtown London store.

This includes the atmosphere, with soft background music and offering beverages like sparkling water. “We don’t just focus on making customers look good. We focus on making them feel good,” Ofori says. “It’s a lifestyle that we’re projecting here.” n

theatre A century of cinema reimagined GRAND BEND & AREA

KINETO FOREST RENOVATION UNDERWAY By Kathy Rumleski

I

n the span of 100 years, cinema has changed immensely and a community in Lambton County has borne witness to all the changes. The Kineto Theatre in Forest, opened in 1917, is among the longest continuously operating movie theatres in the world. “There is a theatre in England, and we believe there is one in northwestern U.S., that is about the same age,” says Ruth Illman, a member of the local Kiwanis Club, which operates the Kineto theatre. Under the Kiwanis, more changes are coming to the theatre. The frame of the building dates to the 1870s and has been used as a men’s clothing store and feed shop. The hub of Forest for the past century, the theatre building is also a gathering place and one that is about to expand. A $1.1-million renovation is underway. “It’s a jewel in the community and it’s something that everyone is proud of. Indicative of that is the response we’ve had so far to our capital campaign,” says Illman, campaign co-chair.

The renovations will include a stateof-the-art lobby, an industrial kitchen and serving area, accessible washrooms and a community space. Local company Wellington Builders, which completed the first major renovation under the Kiwanis in the 1980s, began the latest update in January. The theatre will remain open on weekends during the renovations. Despite all of the entertainment choices and streaming services, Illman says people still enjoy the social aspect of going to the theatre. She’s excited about the opportunity for more innovative programming, such as combining food and film. The public will eventually be able to see a unique link to the past hanging in the lobby. When the museum in Forest was cleaning out a shed in the summer, a remarkable find was made that will add to the glamour of the renovations. Movie promotion posters about a century old were found in the insulation. One of the posters promoted the 1924 silent drama Find Your Man, with Rin Tin Tin, a popular German Shepherd. “We’re going to have one of them restored,” Illman says. Renovations are expected to be complete by the end of September. n

In his fourth year as artistic director at the Grand Theatre, Dennis Garnhum is staunch in his support of made-in-Canada-for-Canadians stage productions. n international collaboration of a global success. The premiere of a cross-Atlantic identify story. A new thriller, a new Indigenous play, a Newfoundland tale and a new musical from the composers of Prom Queen. This season is all about the Grand Theatre’s ‘World Curious London Proud’ focus. For artistic director Dennis Garnhum, it’s all about “telling our stories on our stage. You want to see yourself on the stage – people who look like you, feel like you, someone you can relate to.” The decision to choose an all-Canadian focus for the season was based on that belief. “Theatre used to rely on imports and sneak in a Canadian play when no one was looking,” said Garnhum. “It is audacious how much new we have – This London Life, Room, Grow, Honour Beat.” This London Life by Morris Panych celebrates and sends up London, Ontario

versus London, England – “a cheeky way of putting the city on stage,” said Garnhum. Room is based on London writer Emma Donoghue’s best-selling book, and Oscar-winning movie. Honour Beat explores family, love and tragedy seen through the eyes of Indigenous sisters. Two Amish sisters land in the middle of an illegal grow-op in Grow. Garnhum realized two seasons ago that local audiences were ready for a taste of the new with Silence. “The response was so extraordinary the National Arts Centre picked it up. Then it went to Nova Scotia on the strength of audience reaction. What’s most important is the plays. It’s not ‘this new play is so interesting’ but ‘this play is so interesting.’” Sarnia playwright Matt Murray’s Grow workshopped in Toronto two years ago, before legalization of cannabis. “The story was different so we kept rewriting it so it wasn’t dated,” said Garnhum. The title was also changed

to denote marijuana plants, the setting and the narrative arc of self-discovery. “This musical is a trailblazer for years to come.” Trailblazer could also describe Garnhum and this season’s playbill and his plans for the future. Those plans include more new works. “We’re developing a play about Ambrose Small, a ghost story about the owner of the Grand whose disappearance in 1919 was never solved. Starlight Tours, which highlights the music, language and traditions of the Treaty Six Territory and Metis Nation, is being workshopped this year. “What is important about doing all this new work is it’s a new adventure,” said Garnhum. “With new work comes risk. Not all will succeed. It takes time, sometimes years and it takes three times as much work as classical theatre. My thing is whenever people come in and are surprised. We’ve evolved as a company and that’s why I’m excited by all of it. That’s when I’ll know we’ve arrived.” n

A friendly place

MacKinlay Mercantile owner Cindy MacKinlay and manager Ruth Wilson.

MacKinlay Mercantile offers variety of goods By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

W

hen customers wander into MacKinlay Mercantile in London’s Wortley Village, they find it takes time to peruse all the shop’s offerings. “We have a little bit of everything,” says owner Cindy MacKinlay. “People circle at least twice and usually three times.” When she decided to open a shop, MacKinlay envisioned the type of general store she likes to visit, offering a wide variety of products. “I called it ‘mercantile’ because we are open to anything and not pigeon-holed into just gifts or just kitchen items,” she says. “I started looking at different ideas and then got on the laptop to search out what I wanted and ended up with some great companies and sales reps.”

The eclectic mix of offerings on the shelves ranges from gourmet foods to skin care products, baby items, candles, home décor and even Turkish towels and bathrobes. A popular item is a collection of tin signs with humorous sayings. “We’re always re-ordering,” she says. “People love them. They’re great for the garage or man cave.” She also keeps a running list of particular items customers are looking for and that she and manager Ruth Wilson research and bring in if they can find it or something similar. MacKinlay opened the store in October 2018 and has built a growing customer base. The first Christmas was just a couple months after opening and although it

was busy, she says she was amazed at how much busier it was this past season. She feels the Mercantile’s character fits nicely into the ambiance of Wortley Village, with its boutique shops and trendy eateries. Since she resides in Old South, MacKinlay describes it as “like living in a small town in the heart of the city.” Neighbours regularly drop in to see what’s new and to chat and enjoy the camaraderie and snack on samples set out to promote the diverse collection of jams, spreads and patés. “It’s a social thing,” she says. “This is a happy little place to hang out. We’ve been really pleased with how everything has gone.” n

Flexible accommodation

London Fine Furniture’s staffers (l-r) Nick Robinson-Kenner, Harold Duesbury (co-owner), Alice Breault and Cassie Nalty, with Cooper the dog.

Guest quarters made easy with London Fine Furniture

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste or Southwestern Ontario residents seeking just the right piece of furniture for a specific space in their home, London Fine Furniture is a go-to location. Owners Harold and Linda Duesbury are committed to providing quality furnishings for any room in the home. “We have everything for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms,” says Harold Duesbury. “All of our furniture is made in Canada.” Their 15,000-square-foot South London store is divided into dozens of room vignettes, grouping furnishings so that customers can visualize how the items would look in their own homes. This spring the store is adding a new product, a line of cabinet beds from British Columbia-based Cabinet Bed.

“It’s like a Murphy bed but it’s portable, so you can move it from room to room or take it to another house if you move,” says Duesbury, referencing the Murphy models that are built into a wall. “People like them because of the space-saving capability.” They are also comfortable, he says. “They come with a six-inch memory foam mattress that is far superior to sofa bed mattresses.” They come in a variety of designs and colours to fit any home décor. Another product popular with London Fine Furniture customers is artwork. “We sell a lot of art,” Duesbury says. With their room vignettes enclosed on three sides, there is plenty of wall space to fill, he says. “We have more than 200 pieces of artwork on display.

We have people come in every month to see what different art we have.” They have also begun selling area rugs in seven sizes. A distinctive advantage that London Fine Furniture offers its customers is the ability to customize their purchases. “There are all kinds of options,” Duesbury says. For example, if a customer likes a 60-inch dresser but needs it to be 57 inches or a sofa they would prefer with a higher back, those needs can be accommodated. One of their suppliers offers four kinds of wood to choose from and 40 different knobs for dressers, he says. The store draws customers from as far north as Tobermory and from Windsor to Toronto. n
