“If you could choose one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humour.” JENNIFER JONES
W
hen I had the inspiration for this editorial – while riding the elevator – my thought was this: thank goodness for those in my life who have retained their sense of humour through all of this. What made riding the elevator the cause of this thought – unknown. Maybe the irony that I was in a moving box by myself wearing a mask. Maybe it was the concept that I have done this many times in the nine months since masks became a ‘thing.’ Whatever it was, I started to laugh, howl really, and then that picture in my mind’s eye made me laugh even harder. When I searched for a quote to top this page, I found several great candidates: • A sense of humour is the ability to understand a joke and that the joke is oneself. Clifton Paul Fadiman • People with a good sense of humour have a better sense of life. Rumi • Common sense and a sense of humour are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humour is just common sense, dancing. William James
www.riverstoneoriginalhomes.com 519 . 666 . 3537 Mike Loyens • Travis Loyens
EDITOR’S note
The dictionary defines a sense of humour as having the ability to understand a joke, but I think it is much bigger than that. I think that the above quotes better define it. Having a sense of humour allows one to better understand oneself. Self knowledge is a precious commodity.
Having a sense of humour allows one to navigate life – because of this self knowledge – sailing through the troughs as well as the peaks is less onerous. Having a sense of humour allows one also to be compassionate and empathetic because it usually gives one a larger world view. We have passed Thanksgiving which is our end-of-summer breather, providing a pause to begin reflecting on all the people/intangibles/things in our lives for which we should be grateful. And as the holiday season approaches, we extend this time of thankful joy by gathering with some of those people (sometimes virtually) and appreciating all the things – including intangibles – that bring us happiness. Gratitude for a well-developed sense of humour is more poignant now since ours have been stretched through the past nine months. As we gather in our small family and friend groups (allowable at time of writing) to celebrate the season, I hope we will take time to laugh, love and be grateful. Now more than ever we need this. The Lifestyle Magazine team wishes you and yours the best of the holiday season,

A VIRTUAL FEAST FOR THE EYES Following the success of last spring’s Dream Lottery online, their homes are ready for you to check out in your home. BY ELLEN ASHTON-HAISTE
WHAT DOES A DREAM HOME NEED? A chef’s kitchen and this one does not disappoint, with a large gas range with European-style range hood, waterfall countertop island and tons of storage available in the custom cabinetry.
OPPOSITE A delight to modern sensibilities, John Vranic and his team have constructed a home that will appeal to those seeking clean lines and open spaces. Just inside the impressive front entrance, a private office space is dominated by a unique desk. Large windows allow ample light to enter the work area. LEFT Cozy up with family or host friends in this great room, highlighted by wooden beams. It features a fireplace framed with Italian porcelain. INSET The double-door entrance says, “Welcome home; you’ve won the lottery!”

TOP Located in Edgewater Estates, the Vranic dream home is a three-bedroom, two and a half bath home with 2,355 feet of living space. BOTTOM The Bridlewood home, on Silver Creek Crescent, has five bedrooms and three and a half baths in 5,285 feet of living space.

M
odern is at the top of the menu for this fall’s Dream Lottery homes. London’s Silverleaf, by Bridlewood Homes, and the Edgewater Estates residence in Kilworth – built by Vranic Homes – both showcase innovative contemporary design styles. The homes are two of the grand prizes in the joint venture of three hospital foundations that has raised millions of dollars over more than two decades. These monies fund technology, equipment and research at St. Joseph’s Health Care, London Health Sciences Centre and Children’s Hospital at LHSC. Bridlewood president Carmine Gargarella calls the Silverleaf home “a comprehensive exercise in modern architecture,” featuring a bold highcontrast black-and-white theme, juxtaposed with hits of colour. “As you go through each area, it makes a statement,” Gargarella says.

Working with Kim and Victoria Morphy at 12/26 Design Co., he says the intention was to construct a contemporary modern home offering impact and architectural detail while still generating warmth and tranquility. As examples, he cites the great room’s tiled fireplace wall with media, storage and integrated artwork. It is offset by the black and white kitchen, as well as the lower level entertainment centre, a dramatic allblack space. This contrasts with the master suite that he describes as a tranquil oasis showcasing an off-white palette and ensuite with freestanding tub anchored by a neutral floral backdrop to the double entry oversized shower. John Vranic says his goal for the Edgewater Estates home was to create a sophisticated family home with “a different feel, a Toronto flair.” To achieve this, he worked with award-winning Toronto designer Evelyn Eshun, tapping her extensive experience with diverse products and finishes, generating a result that has received “tremendously positive response.”
Vranic says it starts at the entrance foyer that opens to an expansive great room. This space showcases a vaulted ceiling with dark wood box beams and is anchored by a fireplace set in an Italian porcelain surround. It is bracketed by sizeable windows offering optimal natural light and views of the rear yard and covered deck, accessed from both the kitchen dinette and master suite. Italian porcelain also makes an appearance in the master ensuite bathroom’s glass shower and surrounding the freestanding tub. The home also features Hanstone countertops and custom cabinetry throughout. Tickets for the dream homes and other grand prize options, including adventure and backyard makeover packages or one million dollars cash, are available until midnight December 17, 2020. Final draws take place January 6, 2021, with winners announced the following day. However, if all tickets are sold by the Early Bird deadline of midnight December 10, final draws will be held December 21.

A PLACE TO NEST SECOND PHASE OF SUNNINGDALE WEST SERVES CURRENT NEEDS By Janis Wallace
T
he Medway Valley is home to rare species of plants and animals. It has also been inhabited by humans for hundreds of years. The latest development, Sunningdale West Phase 2, proves why the area with its Carolinian Forest, Medway Creek and Sunningdale Golf & Country Club has always been an attractive place to live.
South of Sunningdale and east of Wonderland Roads, the development borders the Medway Valley Heritage Forest. 32 Lifestyle November/December 2020

“The location is outstanding,” says Gordon Thompson, president of Corlon Properties Inc. the developer of the area. “It’s second to none. There is so much variety, so many options, it has broad appeal.”
outside the country. Typically, they are families, but empty nesters and retirees are also buying the 43 custom houses. “When we started, we wanted to create an upscale neighbourhood for people who like an active lifestyle,” Thompson says.
South of Sunningdale and east of Wonderland Roads, the development borders the Medway Valley Heritage Forest with paved trails for strollers and wheelchairs, as well as woodchip walks for hikers. It is also across from the golf club for those who prefer their walk with a different challenge. Schools, shopping and entertainment venues are nearby.
“You would have thought families,” says Gargarella. “Given the lots and location, we are building a number of high-end homes for empty nesters. Some of them tried a highrise or condo. They are choosing one-floor or one-floor with walkout. The lifestyle and design – we’re bringing forward innovative styles and ideas. It’s the flow, the floor plan, the use of windows, use of space, the finishes and products. The big demand is for a large, galley kitchen with stand-alone island overlooking the living space. People want higher ceilings, or tray or vaulted more and more. Oversized garages, even triple or tandem with exteriors of stone and stucco.”
“You’ve got Western and University Hospital, the Richmond Street artery, Masonville and golf,” says Carmine Gargarella, president and founder of Bridlewood Homes, one of the builders. “It has commercial and social aspects. It is London’s premiere home site for a multitude of reasons.” With so much on offer, Thompson says buyers represent a broad range from London to
All seven of the builders have custom home experience: Bridlewood Homes; Crown Homes
of London; Graystone Homes: Harasym Developments; Marquis Developments; Wasko Developments; and Westhaven Homes. Another big attraction now is the ability to design a workspace in a custom home. “Work from home is a big factor,” says Thompson. “There is a lot of interest.” Gargarella agrees, adding their lots are close to being sold out. “London is seeing a resurgence. We’ve gone through the COVID lockdown and people realized they want a better place to potentially work and live. When people spend a lot of time in a space because they can’t travel, they put the dollars in a new home. The (interest) rates are really good. It all came together.” He fields daily calls from Toronto and Montreal as people see more value in London’s lower density, ability to work from home and not deal with commutes, highrise elevators and doors. Gargarella calls London a Zoom community. Today’s homeowners regard their property as both a place to live and

an investment. With that in mind, Thompson says Sunningdale West is a solid buy. “In this area you can have confidence the value will increase over time. It is one of the most desirable neighbourhoods. You can’t go wrong.” Thompson based his statement on years of experience. Corlon Properties started developing the area in 2001, weathering 9/11, the financial crisis of 2008, and now the pandemic, he says. “You realize the value is maintained here through these challenging periods.” n

YES, VIRGINIA you can travel this winter S
ONTARIO RESORT OFFERS INCLUSIVE FUN
By Jill Ellis-Worthington
ad your family’s Disney trip over the holiday break is a bust? Despondent that you can’t visit the DR this winter? The worldwide pandemic has changed many things about life, including international travel, but there are amazing places – albeit not as warm as your usual destination may be – to visit right here in Ontario. One of those is a casual, cozy lodge set on Otter Lake and surrounded by the northern woods near Parry Sound – the Grand Tappaattoo Resort. If getting away with the family or for some couple time during the late fall or winter is on your agenda, this property could be a great fit. Built in the 1960s, it was purchased six years ago by Amanda and Trevor Jalonen. The couple, who had a construction business in the Collingwood area, is from Parry Sound and wanted a retirement project nearer their roots. They have done extensive renovations to update the entire property. With 37 spacious rooms that feature two queens or a king bed, whisking the grandkids away for an adventure is doable or it could be ideal for a casual romantic getaway. Staying in one of the eight one- and two-bedroom suites (with interlocking doors that can make them bigger) would work well for a multi-generational vacation. All the rooms and suites have balconies and lake views. Some rooms are only accessible by climbing several flights of stairs, so ask 36 Lifestyle November/December 2020
for a ground floor entry room if you have mobility concerns. Rooms have fridges to keep your drinks cold but there is no cooking allowed. During school breaks, the Jalonens offer inclusive packages for families that include meals and some activities. You must make reservations to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room. The restaurant staff is on point, serving excellent cuisine with great service. For breakfast, the eggs benny is a must-try and at dinner dive into the jägerschnitzel. Winter fun includes snowmobiling (the resort is positioned on the ‘C’ Trail and rentals are available nearby), snowshoeing (available for lodge guests), hiking (a twokilometre trail on the property and several others located nearby) and ice fishing (a hut is located on the lake by the lodge). One of the winter highlights is a large skating rink that Trevor makes on the lake. Bring your skates and marshmallows because you can enjoy the rink and then sit by the roaring campfire to warm up, with a cup of cocoa. The Grand Tappattoo also features a large indoor swimming pool that works as well for water running and laps as it does for splashing with the little ones. This is an excellent winter destination but there are also 10 cottages if you are already planning for next summer’s holiday; they are not available in the winter. Summer activities include lounging on the sandy beach and swimming in
the clear lake or exploring it in a kayak, canoe or on a paddle board – all available to guests at no charge, along with personal flotation devices. The clean air and majestic beauty of this province’s more northern areas, surrounded by the beautiful stone formations of the Canadian Shield and magnificent conifers, are all excellent reasons to visit Grand Tappattoo Resort.
SOME THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT TRAVELLING DURING A PANDEMIC • Registration is now online prior to arrival. • No ice machines on the floors – you must ask for ice at the registration desk. • No pool towels available in the pool area – you must ask for them at the registration desk. • Mask-up in shared indoor spaces. • In some hotels, in-room amenities, like coffee machines, have been removed. • Rooms are not serviced during visit. Ask for new towels if you need them and be prepared to make your own bed. • Extra disinfecting of high-touch surfaces and shared objects (like canoe paddles and PFDs). • Buffets served by staff, instead of self-serve. n

ifton Properties is one of the area’s longest-standing and most prolific residential construction companies. Now it is raising the bar by offering enhanced services for choosing finishings for those who purchase new homes. Based at Sifton Properties’ head office in the West 5 community, the Sifton Décor Studio caters to its new homebuyers, with 2,600 square feet of space devoted to displaying all aspects and all levels of choices available. This design centre ensures that your Sifton dream home is truly dreamy. The bigger, brighter, high-tech space was opened in September 2019. Gabi Brown, décor consultant, and her associate Georgia Murray, guide homebuyers through the process by holding several meetings that

can be in-person or virtual. From products which will determine the look of the home’s façade and outdoor elements, to electrical and lighting choices, flooring and cabinetry options, paint and trim decisions, bathroom and kitchen elements – all possibilities are physically displayed in a variety of vignettes which are organized by living space. However, having myriad choices can prove a boon or a headache depending on your comfort level, so Sifton provides the able assistance of these two professionals who pride themselves on sharing their expertise keeping the clients tastes, needs and budgets in mind. “We work with clients from the outside in,” explains Brown, adding, “guiding clients through choices to help pull together their vision, keeping in mind their budget.”
OPPOSITE PAGE Decor consultants usually have an initial get-toknow-you meeting in the comfortable lounge area of the Sifton Decor Studio. ABOVE Vignettes – like this contemporary kitchen and luxurious bathroom – portray choices in all rooms of a house are on display. INSET A wide variety of options are available to see and touch at the centre.
Buyers who favour a sustainable approach will find choices for them, while those who want a more traditional look will not be disappointed. One high-tech option on display at the design centre is the Opti-Myst – a vapour fireplace – from Dimplex. “It’s fully open but very safe so you don’t have to worry about the kids,” says Brown of this contemporary design element. With safety in mind, appointments are required to visit the studio and the number of patrons allowed at one time is limited. Being
able to see and touch your design choices, however, appeals to most new homebuyers. Follow up appointments are often done virtually if clients schedules are busy with work and family. Buying a new house is one of the biggest purchases that people will make. Having the full attention and help of a design team who works through the hundreds of choices necessary to make it your dream home is what the new Sifton Décor Studio is all about. n

CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS SEASON IS CLASSY AND COMFORTABLE

Topping off 2020 by celebrating the year-end holidays – Hanukah, Kwanza, Christmas – will be a bit different. More intimate gatherings with our groups of 10 or fewer (allowable at time of writing) friends, family or co-workers instead of bigger cocktail parties with all the neighbours or company-wide gala events or family reunions big enough that you need to rent a hall. We still want to show up as our best selves by dressing up with a little glitz and glam. The trends shown here will do you well for a special party but will also take you through the colder months for any dress-up events you may be lucky enough to attend, in-person or on-line.

RENEWED A COZY COTTAGE RENOVATION By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

cozy Grand Bend cottage that is a long-time favoured retreat for a London family needed a 21st-century update. “It was a nice pine cottage, but it was tired,” says CCR Build and Remodel co-owner Peder Madsen. “So, we gave it an overall refresh.” Madsen says the family, whose young adult offspring are starting families of their own, wanted to retain the cottage atmosphere but make it more modern and inviting for the coming generations. CCR started by removing the predominately pine wainscoting, trim and cabinets. Adding a lighter touch with white painted walls and replacing heavy pine joints with floating grey and taupe ceiling beams created a more spacious ambiance.

OPPOSITE PAGE With newly configured windows, quartz countertops and new appliances, the kitchen of this Grand Bend cottage is now a bright, open modern space. TOP A large trapezoid-shaped window replaced its outdated predecessor, modernizing the space while allowing a great view of the cottage’s natural surroundings. ABOVE The bathrooms were updated with shiplap. ABOVE RIGHT Renewing the look of the exterior included replacing the shakes with siding above the garage.
The kitchen features light quartz countertops, with faint marble veining, and white cabinetry by GCW Custom Kitchens. New appliances, including converting an electric stove to gas, also updated the space. A dynamic nod to modernization involved changes to the windows, Madsen says. An original arched camber-top window, above the kitchen sink, was replaced with
a transom top. This theme was carried through over the patio doors and is echoed in the upper cabinets. An arched window in the great room was replaced with a floor-to-ceiling trapezoid window, aligning with the cathedral ceiling. Madsen says this was designed to complement the adjacent stone fireplace and highlight the surrounding natural scenery. “It is set right in the woods and the views are

beautiful,” he notes. New shelving units bracket the fireplace and engineered white oak wood flooring was installed throughout the main level. Another major change involved the stairways to the cottage’s upper and lower levels. To open up the space, a wall that extends from the upper staircase was removed. On the upper stairway, pine was replaced with ash railings and treads, highlighted by wrought iron spindles. At the top of the lower stairway, adjacent to the kitchen, a coffee bar with wine fridge was added. Most changes were to the main level. However, new cabinetry, along with shiplap wall siding, was added to the second-floor bathrooms. The ensuite shower was enlarged and new carpeting was laid in the three upper bedrooms. A fresh coat of paint spruced up the lower level recreation room. The few exterior changes involved replacing the blue wood shakes and faux window with brown Maibec siding on a front bump-out above the garage. Aluminum trim was stripped from around the outside of the great room window, and pine board-andbatten siding was installed to match the bump-out. Madsen says the family is loving their rejuvenated retreat. “They’re up there all the time. It’s a great place for them to get away.” n

Serve this savoury side for seasonal feasts
C
omfort food need not be bland. This savoury, easyto-make side dish will wow your dinner guests during the festive season or will serve as a great accompaniment to homemade soup as January fades into February and you need a warm, stick-to-your-ribs meal to get the gang ready for an afternoon of sledding or skating. From the kitchen of Steel Grill Catering, Chef Volker Jendhoff offers his take on an age-old German favourite. Tami Collins, catering manager, recommends serving it with a roast loin of pork, pork chops, a nice steak or beef brisket for dinner. If you’re lucky enough to have some left over, pair it with soup or a baguette sandwich at lunch time, she adds. Steel Grill Catering offers pick-up dinners at its Dundas location, as well as catering for social or business gatherings.
BAVARIAN POTATO SALAD Makes four to six servings
2.5 lb medium-sized Yukon Gold Potatoes 1 medium yellow onion – finely diced or sliced 1 cup chicken stock 1/4 cup canola oil 6 tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 tsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground black pepper 2 tsp. German or Dijon mustard 1 tbsp. chopped parsley 4 slices crisply cooked bacon diced
Peel potatoes; dice or slice them thinly and transfer to a larger bowl. (Leaving the skin on the potatoes gives the salad a more rustic look.) WARM DRESSING In a medium size pot combine: chicken stock, diced onions, vinegar, salt, sugar, canola oil, mustard and black pepper. Bring to a boil and pour warm dressing over the sliced or diced potatoes. Let it steep for 30 minutes or longer. Add chopped parsley. Transfer into a serving bowl. Sprinkle with crisp bacon and it is ready to serve.
METHOD Boil the potatoes, skin on, in lightly salted water. Once potatoes are cooked, drain them and let them cool off.

reating an ideal home living space just got easier. Geerlinks Home Hardware, the family-owned-and-operated St. Thomas store, has transformed its Home Furniture Gallery into a Home Design Gallery. It offers everything needed to imagine and furnish any room from kitchen to bath and beyond. “It’s a one-stop shop for design in new homes or renovations,” says co-manager Danielle Geerlinks. “Our motto is come in and ‘create your space’.” The new gallery has added to its portfolio of appliances, furniture and décor items, to now offer complete kitchens and bathrooms. This includes cabinets and countertops, laundry rooms and closets, plus flooring, wall finishes and a full range of lighting options. Even backyard decks are on the list.
52 Lifestyle November/December 2020
Filled with sample products and room scenarios, the gallery is set up to be an inviting place with a welcoming atmosphere. This is, after all, the hallmark of the community retailer and the Home Hardware chain, Geerlinks notes. “Our customer service is an immense source of pride for us. As local owners, we know our customers. It’s personal. Often staff members are serving their friends and neighbours.” Furniture, appliances and décor pieces continue to be a cornerstone of the gallery, along with window coverings, always a major element offering dozens of options from draperies to shutters. A factor that has set the retailer’s galleries apart from similar providers has always been focus on providing customized products, Geerlinks says. This hasn’t changed. design program and hundreds of samples in the store aid customers in making these choices. And, all product is Canadian-made, sourced from local and national companies. To facilitate this innovative concept, a six-member design team has been put together to work with customers both at the store and through in-home consultations. Professional installation is also a new service offered by the gallery. In addition to homeowners, the gallery aims to attract builders and renovation businesses, Geerlinks says. They can send their clients to
the store to peruse and pick their products, which will then be delivered and installed. The St. Thomas store is the only one in the Home Hardware chain to introduce this type of service, and Geerlinks says the hope is that the concept will become widespread as it is embraced by retailers across the country. It’s had a soft unveiling to date. In the planning since late 2018, it was set to launch just as the COVID pandemic hit the country earlier this year. But there will be a grand opening when circumstances permit, she promises. n

An elegant solution TECHNOLOGY OFFERS HOPE AT LONDON’S UROLOGYFOCUSED MEDICAL SPA

M
any women, and some men, are suffering needlessly – being embarrassed, wasting money and hurting the environment –- and Erin Craven is on a mission to stop it. Now 46, Craven has four children and struggled with bladder leakage. “I was really frustrated with how it was impacting my life,” she explains. With a healthcare business background, set out to find out a solution that didn’t include surgery, pelvic physiotherapy, medications or wearing pads the rest of her life. She found the solution in Emsella chair, or the Kegel throne. Wanting to help other women find the same type

of freedom, Craven titled herself the Freedom Founder and CEO when she opened London’s Urospot Clinic in October of 2019. “It’s an elegant, simple treatment, and so dignified,” she explains. Patients wear their own clothes and there’s no invasive treatment. “You’re outsourcing your Kegels, doing 11,000 Kegels in 28 minutes.” The London clinic has served hundreds of clients, which led Craven to open one in Toronto in July because many women were travelling down Highway 401 to receive treatment. This issue affects so many people and at such great cost to their health, their wallets and the environment. According to Craven, over two thirds
of women over the age of 35 are struggling with bladder leaks or urgency. Night waking causes lost sleep, which impacts health. She adds that 50 per cent of women over 50 have a pelvic organ prolapse, that means that the pelvic floor muscles that hold up the bladder, bowels and uterus don’t do their jobs any longer. This often leads to surgery. Men who have had prostate surgery often suffer from leakage issues and sexual disfunction, and treatment at Urospot is equally effective for them. “If you leak for 25 years, that’s $50,000 in pads you’ve thrown in the landfill that will take 500 to 800 years to decompose,” says Craven. Compared to that economic and
environmental impact, the $1,800 (not covered by OHIP) for a six-visit course of treatment appealed to Ashley Culbert, who is 34. At 33 years of age, she had had three children and was suffering with a minor prolapse of the bladder. Besides impacting her ability to leave the house and limiting her ability to exercise, she was also in pain. “I was strategically limiting water so I could take the kids to the park,” she explains of strategies used to cope. “I only wore black tights to the gym in case anything happened, and I couldn’t do any exercises involving jumping.” So, she tried pelvic floor physio after her first and third baby, which didn’t help much but did diagnose the issue. She tried an ab rehab program, thinking that if her core was more toned it would benefit related muscle groups – not so. After hearing about Urospot from a friend she went to the clinic. “I got benefit from the ‘Kegel throne,’” says Culbert, “with no more pain, I can do jumping jacks and don’t have to think about knowing where the bathrooms are when I leave home. I can jump on the trampoline with the kids. Improvement in our sex life is one nice side effect.” Dr. Laura Sovran is the clinic’s medical director and registered nurses conduct the treatments. A client’s first step is a thorough complimentary medical assessment to ensure that she or he is a candidate. Contraindications include having had a hip replacement or a cardiac pacemaker because of the powerful magnets in the chair. The technology has been available in the U.S. and Europe for some time but was introduced in Canada in 2018, according to Craven. It is FDA and Health Canada approved. Six 30-minute treatments over three weeks generally cure or radically alleviate symptoms. Craven says that “95 per cent of women reported significant quality of life improvement and 70 per cent are able to eliminate or reduce their use of pads,” says Craven. A maintenance treatment every four to five months is required to continue seeing benefit. n

A holiday road trip is just what Santa ordered
AGATE TREE FARMS
By Janis Wallace
The Christmas season has weathered many different times and circumstances over the years, but one constant has been the desire to trim a tree and share special food with family and friends. It is possible to create those treasured memories by visiting a local tree or berry farm. Family-run and focused on providing the cream of nature’s crops, here are some options for close-to-home excursions.
TREE LANE FARMS
AGATE TREE FARM
BAYFIELD BERRY FARM
Gather the kids and head to the country for Instagramable fun at Tree Lane Farms. Prancer the reindeer will happily pose too. With picture-perfect Christmas tree woods, a campfire, straw bale mountain or pedal cars, the shots will be the envy of your friends. Professional photography can also be booked. “We wanted to make a family experience,” says Colleen Nugteren, who took over the farm with husband Lucas from his parents two years ago. As well as the quintessential cut-your-own tree, they offer wagon rides, games, slides, food and shopping for seasonal gifts and décor. “We see families, couples and groups of women who come just to shop.” Cut-your-own options include white spruce and white pine, while Fraser firs are offered as pre-cut. “People like all types,” says Nugteren. “Some know the type or want a Charlie Brown tree. Others just want one that looks good.” With more than 40,000 trees on 60 acres, “most people leave with one they love.” The farm supplies handsaws and carts to roll trees from the woods, though “some people are happy to drag them.” Fresh wreaths and greenery bundles are available. Trails offer a path to explore and make a day outdoors.
When Milt Agate couldn’t find a tree one year in Hamilton, his brother suggested he should go to the family farm near Iderton and cut one. And so, began 30 years of planting seedlings, tending them for several years and then selling them to be the centrepiece of family celebrations. At first, they planted thousands of seedlings by hand and distributed over 35 acres. A machine reduced the hours planting, but the grooming was still a hands-on activity. “We started with Scotch pine; it was 60 per cent of the market,” says Agate. “Slowly we switched to spruce and balsam. Fraser fir is popular because of needle retention. Scotch and white pine take five to six years to grow. Some are 15 years.” Like any crop, weather plays a role. “We had a couple of drought years and lost 2,000 six- and seven-foot trees.” Customers look for different kinds of trees. One woman hunts for the runts. “There’s a Charlie Brown tree, and then there’s this one,” Agate says referring to her choice. She showed him a photo of it decorated. “She spent three nights decorating it – it was gorgeous.” Agate looks forward to seeing repeat customers each year. “Now the kids are bringing their kids. We have pictures on the walls of families through the years.” He loves pointing out a parent at age four to their little tykes. “A lot come all the time. It’s our way of visiting.” Now, Agate is ready to retire. “It was a great business to be in. It was a lot of fun.”
“We grow everything on site,” says Marlene Beyerlein, manager of farm, market, bakery and café at Bayfield Berry Farm. “We started 19 years ago and built everything from scratch.” Everything is done on site: producing, processing and selling. In 2020, they added fruit wines, ciders, wine coolers and schnapps to an extensive list of jams, preserves, baked goods, maple syrup, and fruits and vegetables. “We’re continually changing the products with seasonal pies and different blends of jams.” Have a hard-to-please someone on your gift list? Choose from pre-made, custom or make-your-own gift baskets. “The fruit ciders do really well, and fruit wines. We’re known for our butter tarts,” says Beyerlein. They are also known for good service and good products as word of mouth and repeat customers make up most of the buyers. As consumers want to know more about where their products come from and how they are made, they enjoy seeing the fields of vegetables and orchard rows of trees. Many make it a day trip with a stop at the café for dessert and coffee. Check the website for breakfast, lunch and catering options.

A legacy of excellence
Palumbo Homes is building on reputation
ABOVE AND INSET Interior and exterior views of Palumbo Homes’ 499 Condominiums model.

n 1967, when Sil Palumbo built his first custom home in London, he may not have known he was beginning a tradition that would continue for more than a half century, but two new Palumbo Homes communities, now under development in the region, confirm that success story. “We have been around for a long time, building a reputation for credibility and quality as well as a level of service that we’re known for,” says company president Marco Palumbo, who joined his father’s business in 1992. “We have a reputation for being a very good custom home builder.” In the late 1980s, the developer added to its portfolio of detached homes with one- and two-storey luxury condominiums and attached townhomes. Today,
with single-family homes remaining a cornerstone, there is a focus on condominiums and on land development. “The long-term plan, at this point, is to continue developing communities,” Palumbo says. The new AURA community in Kilworth, just west of London, will feature two- and three-storey attached condominium townhomes, built in a modern contemporary style, he says. “It’s a large site, encompassing 158 units over eight acres.” Construction is set to start in the late winter. Registration is now available on the website for the homes, with prices starting in the $400s. In St. Thomas, MANORWOOD, a new neighbourhood of single-family homes at the intersection of Wellington
Street and Manor Road, just down the street from the Elgin Centre shopping mall, is being developed. The community will consist of 106 primarily 40foot lots as well as two mid-rise sites. Construction is expected to start there in the spring. Palumbo Homes prides itself on offering innovative designs with an emphasis on new technologies plus standard features that are often offered as upgrades by other builders. Its in-house design team is available to help buyers choose layouts, design features, colours and finishes that reflect their style preferences. Palumbo is registered under the TARION Home Warranty Program and, since 1977, has consistently received its service excellence rating. n

TOP A display of wall ovens from the Monogram line.
Offering innovation
Array of choice at Hensall Major Appliances

t’s never a boring day at Hensall Major Appliances. “There’s always something we can offer our customers to enhance their shopping experience,” says Hilary Alexander, who operates the Huron County family business with her husband, Josh. The business is an exclusive GE appliance retailer. Being a smaller independent store, where display space can be a challenge, the Alexanders appreciate the company’s Monogram Design Centre. The Toronto-based centre is a showcase for GE’s Monogram premium brand, offering potential buyers the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the products, see the features they offer and how they work and to view some special demonstrations. The Monogram products are hand-built and feature exclusive options, Hilary says,
citing the example of the Advantium oven, which functions as a convection oven, microwave, toaster oven and even warming and proofing drawer. With the high-end brand being a significant investment, the couple advise customers to take advantage of visiting the centre. “It’s not a sales centre, so there’s no pressure,” Hilary says. “They’re strictly there to help clients find products that suit their needs.” That information is sent back to the retailer for follow up. During the COVID pandemic, the centre is offering virtual online consultation, as well as individual one-on-one appointments. Another GE upgrade that Hilary is enthusiastic about is a revamp of laundry front-loaders. A long-time issue has been a tendency for a build-up of mould when the appliance was not wiped dry or
left with the door open. However, new anti-microbial technology has resulted in improved rubber door gaskets that keep the appliances cleaner and fresher. The laundry appliances also come in four colour finishes, including standard white, diamond gray, satin nickel and a sapphire blue that she says is “absolutely gorgeous.” GE’s Café line, which is one step down from the Monogram, is also boasting two new finishes – a matte white and matte black – that Hilary calls fantastic. “They really pop in your kitchen, a definite showpiece.” The Hensall store also offers repair service for all brands of appliances. They service an area of a 60-kilometre radius around Hensall, from Grand Bend to Goderich, over to Clinton, into Exeter, Lucan and Ilderton. n
