Summer brings a frenetic pace of trying to jam as much fun and frolicking in the sun as we can before leaves fly and snow falls. To me, autumn has always been a time to settle down, to reflect and turn inward; examining what we want to accomplish now that more time will be spent indoors. A few ‘fall wishes’ – my equivalent of New Year’s resolutions – are always made to help focus my energies. How do you bring in a new season? Do you burn extra energy with fall cleaning, ridding the house of summer’s dust that has collected while you were too busy having fun outside? Do you finish up the back-toschool shopping? Or do you start prepping the garden for its long rest? Each of us has different rituals and routines that mark the passage of time as we move into the darker months of the year. This issue of Lifestyle Magazine is our largest in the publication’s 14-year history, so we have plenty of good material to help you make the transition to autumn, no matter what your plans are. If yours include home renovations or thoughts of looking at moving to a new home, we have two tours that will help focus your list of what you want, what you need and who to work with to achieve these dreams. On pages 15 and 65 are stories about the LHBA Parade of Renovations – to aid homeowners who want to improve their digs – and the Model Home Tour – to help those looking at buying a newly constructed house.

Statistics tell us that June is no longer the most popular time to wed. September and October have supplanted it, as brides look to cooler dates on which to celebrate their big day. London has so many lovely places where you can tie the knot. On page 60, we have an overview of six of them, offering both indoor and outdoor options. If being a ‘run-away-bride’ has always seemed like a romantic notion to you, check out the feature on page 58 to give you ideas about possible places to hold your destination wedding and tips from a couple who recently ‘ran away’ to Mexico to deliver on their dream nuptials. Looking your very best, whether you’re the centre of attention or a gracious guest, is an essential part of the big day. On pages 50 and 52, you’ll see all the glitz and glam of gorgeous gowns for brides and guests, presented by renowned fashion writer Heather Toskan. Buying a new car is on many folks list as the new models hit showroom floors in the fall. Clare Dear, one of Canada’s most respected auto journalists, offers his perspective on what’s hot for the luxury automobile market on page 33. However you recognize the change of seasons, make ready for colder days and focus your energies as summer turns to autumn, we invite you to enjoy a warm drink, settle back and enjoy reading this issue of Lifestyle Magazine. A fresh perspective in southwest London

Sifton’s Westwood Village offers upscale condos By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A

n enclave of single-storey townhomes is adding a new lifestyle dimension in London’s southwest corner. Westwood Village, from Sifton Properties, will comprise 30 attached condominiums nestled in the heart of Andover Trails, a neighbourhood south of Southdale Road between Wonderland and Wharncliffe. “The development complements the single-family homes in the community,” says Rick Gooyers, vicepresident of New Homes at Sifton. He says the condominium lifestyle appeals to empty nesters and provides an opportunity for parents of young families in the area to locate nearby. “We also have some happy homeowners north of Southdale, in a nearly 30-year-old community, who have become empty nesters and want to stay in the area,” he adds. Westwood Village sales representative Barb Owens says she’s definitely seeing this demographic and

“We are building a unique product… people really get it when they come here.” adds that the condominium lifestyle appeals to people who go south for part of the winter or spend some summer time at a cottage. “They appreciate that the house will be looked after in terms of the outside maintenance,” Owens says. As well, purchasers appreciate the conveniences that come with the location, Gooyers says. A wealth of amenities are available at the doorstep, with the commercial Wonderland corridor providing myriad shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. The Andover Trails neighbourhood boasts parks and open spaces crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails. Some of the homes back onto those green spaces, Gooyer notes.

A neighbourhood gazebo offers an ideal spot for residents to relax and visit, Owens says, and a park where grandparents enjoy playing with their grandkids is within walking distance. The development has completed a first phase of 15 homes and is now building the first eight of the final phase. The home styles and sizes in this neighbourhood are unique to London’s townhome market, Gooyers says. They are larger than the norm, Owens says. “Most townhome condos in the city are 1,200 to 1,400 square feet. Ours are 1,470 to 1,741.” The selection is also unique in that there are just four floor plans. “Each has its own merits,” she says, explaining that this makes it easy for buyers to choose the plan that best suits their lifestyle needs, as opposed to neighbourhoods offering many more plans that can be overwhelming. “It’s easy for people to gravitate to one of our plans and it simplifies the process,” she says. All plans include two bedrooms and two bathrooms with options

Appealing to empty nesters, these large condos are surrounded by green space and close to many sought-after amenities. tOp: Westwood Village’s Energy Star-qualified homes offer community living at its best. including a private den, open-concept kitchens and great rooms, gas fireplaces and patio or terrace doors leading to spacious backyard decks. Master retreats incorporate threepiece ensuite bathrooms and generous walk-in closets. Convenient main-floor laundry rooms have access to the double-bay garages. Details can be personalized, Gooyers notes. For example, there’s the option to finish basements for additional bedrooms or living space. The homes are Energy Star-qualified and up to 20 per cent more energy efficient than those built to Ontario Building Code standards, Gooyers says. He finds that buyers are attracted to the savings on their energy bills as well as the health benefits that come with improved air quality. “We are building a unique product, compared with other areas of the city, in the level of Energy Star that we are using,” Owens says. “The test results are phenomenal and people really get it when they come here.” Interior features include ceramic flooring in foyers, kitchens/cafes, bathroom and laundry areas, an allowance for custom kitchen and bathroom cabinetry and vaulted cathedral ceilings.

Fall in love

With Style! “We provide a sound base and homeowners can take it to whatever level they wish,” Owens says, adding that buyers have access to Sifton’s Décor Centre, a 3,000-square-foot showroom, where buyers have an opportunity to work one-on-one with a professional design consultant to choose finishes, styles and colours. Exteriors are brick with vinyl shake detailing in the gables, plus coachmanstyle garage doors and paving stone walkways and driveways. Two Models opened in August. Finding the

Perfect Fit Get a firsthand look at ways to improve your home durinG the parade of renovations

By Jill Ellis-Worthington

FOR 24 YEARS, the London Home Builders’ Association has put on its Parade of Renovations, showing off the best of redoing, remaking and refurbishing London homes (and sometimes businesses). From a few hundred attendees, the Parade has grown to see more than 1,000 visitors make the trek through renovated residences. The number of homes on display has doubled, as well.

‘zedd architecture – opens a new door’ Located in the heart of London’s evolving SoHo high tech district, modern architecture firm zedd architecture opened its door in April to provide full architectural and design services to local, regional and select international clients. “Our goal at zedd is to conceptualize, visualize and realize inspiring spaces to live, work and play,” say zedd’s founding partners, David Yuhasz and Jason Kipfer. The firm’s new SoHo studio at 363 Horton Street East is indicative of this aim. Last used as a fish market, the space has been transformed into a bright contemporary and relaxed work environment with an eclectic mix of raw concrete elements by local artisans and stylish Italian fixtures. “Most of our meetings are held around our kitchen island with a fresh espresso,” says Yuhasz. Yuhasz a London native, graduated from Western University followed by UBC in Vancouver, while Kipfer is from Kitchener and a graduate of London’s Fanshawe College. Both are seasoned, well travelled architectural specialists who met overseas while working on prestigious commercial, residential and hospitality projects, garnering multiple design awards in the process. When both chose to relocate their families and once again call London home, they saw the value they could bring to local clients by establishing the partnership of zedd architecture and offering their experience in the region. Yuhasz leads the creative process, while Kipfer oversees quality control. Currently, the firm has a range of projects in Brantford, Bracebridge, London, Toronto and Bermuda. The core to zedd is making architecture accessible no matter the project size or budget as smart solutions add value and great design sells, say the partners. “We welcome all enquiries, we are as attentive either sitting at your kitchen table or in the corporate boardroom.” Please contact us or visit our website www.zeddarchitecture.com info@zeddarchitecture.com | 519-581 9333

T

> 45 Sir Robert Place, Arva his year’s Parade will be held on October 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As always, the $10 admission price for a passport to the Parade of Renovations will go to charity. This year’s charity of choice is a natural fit for professionals who work in housing industry, according to John Krzic, chairperson for the Parade of Renovations organizing committee: proceeds will benefit The Unity Project to help with its work providing transitional housing and emergency shelters. Passports can be purchased at one of the homes on the parade on the day of the event. This year’s permutation of the Parade offers a mixture of many different projects: additions, updates and complete overhauls of many different types and ages of homes. The real strength of the Parade is its ability to provide homeowners with a real sensory experience of what they can expect from a renovation. “It’s a great opportunity to see what type of work gets done in the City of London,” says Krzic, “and what RenoMark renovators are capable of. Seeing it (completed projects) firsthand and being able talk to the people involved gives them (homeowners) a better idea of what renovators are capable of and what’s reasonable within different budget ranges.”

So get on the bandwagon because it is time for the twenty-fourth annual LHBA Parade of Renovations. 

This large, million-dollar, single-level home hadn’t had a new look since it was built in the 1980s and was due for a facelift. Anden Design/Build stepped in to renovate the entire main floor, garage and backyard, giving the kitchen, laundry room, powder room and dining room a modern update. New cabinetry helped complete the look. The backyard includes a pool.

> 59 Bartlett Crescent A new stairwell, built by Roes Stairs, necessitated some reconstruction in this 1970s back-split home. CCR Building and Remodeling brought the flooring, lighting, drywall, doors, entryway, fixtures and rails from tired to contemporary. The open-concept home features a library.

> 1140 St. Anthony Road This two-storey, raised bungalow has had a complete remodel, including a new addition upstairs, two new stairwells, a theatre room downstairs, an accessibility ramp and elevator installation indoors. The outdoors has also benefited from new landscaping and hardscaping. Completed by CCR Building and Remodeling, the home – which is over four decades old – now allows its owners continued independence and luxurious comfort. The lower level has gone from dark and small to a bright and large living space! 

ABOVE, lEft tO right: Architectural technology students use specialized computer software to design a wheelchair accessible home as part of a Habitat for Humanity project. Fanshawe College students and staff volunteer to help with numerous Habitat for Humanity projects, working on all phases from design phase to completion. Carpentry apprenticeship students have opportunities to practice hands-on skills needed in the building technology field.

“There are approximately 50 trades (and sub trades) involved in the building of a house,” says Rick Vandersluis, of TRY Recycling, who is the chair for the London Home Builders Association (LHBA) Careers in Construction Committee. With the aging demographic, many of those currently involved in the field of residential construction will be retiring, leaving a huge gap in their wake as more students opt for post-secondary options outside the skilled trades. According to statistics released by the Toronto Workforce Innovation Group, Canada could be

short by one million employees by 2020. This is of great concern to the LHBA, so together with their partners the association is mounting a Careers Showcase on November 5 at the Western Fair District’s Carousel Room. From 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., students and their parents will be able to tour 60 exhibits by Fanshawe College, North American Trades Schools (NATS), associations and organizations involved in construction (the London and District Construction Association, the Ontario Sewer and Watermain Construction Association) and local businesses that employ tradespersons. Though targeted to students in Grades 7 and 8, high school students are also welcome. Parents are also encouraged to attend. Vandersluis feels that the wide array of trades represented, the hands-on nature of many of the displays and being able to talk

one-on-one with people presently active in various trades will make this event attractive to young people and their parents. “Some parents are still guiding their kids toward an academic path without considering skilled trades as alternatives and we want to make sure they have the big picture,” he says, “as there are good-paying jobs and lifetime careers to be had in the skilled trades.” According to the Ontario Home Builders Association, $17.1 billion in wages is pumped into the provinces economy annually by the residential construction industry. Scott Wilson, career services manager for the NATS, says they will have information on its diploma and program offerings: home renovation technician, cabinetmaking, solar technician, HVAC technician and welding technician. “We want to get the message across that there are good opportunities and there’s a good living to be made in the trades.” Fanshawe College will also be on hand with a booth showing its wide array of offerings in the skilled trades: architectural technology, construction technology and carpentry apprenticeships, according to Steven Gedies, professor in the School of Building Technology. Featured hands-on activities and interactive displays will highlight some of the career possibilities. According to Vandersluis, “the Ontario Sewer and Watermain Association will be bringing in simulators for heavy equipment.” Wilson says, “NATS will have water heaters and air conditioners that have been altered so students can see how they work; we’ll also have examples of stair building and other renovation projects. And we’re hoping to have a virtual welding book; it’s like a video game to practice welding.” Fanshawe College’s display will allow attendees to experience the safety side of the business with “fall arrest paraphernalia and harness/ lanyard” as well as a nail-driving activity, according to Gedies. The LHBA’s careers in construction committee regularly attends classrooms in both the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board, who are both partners in sponsoring this event with the LHBA. “Our committee members regularly do presentations in schools, about 50 each year, to let students know about the various careers in construction,” says Vandersluis. “But we thought it was important to promote more opportunities and offer this one-day workshop where kids can bring their parents. We want to get the message across that there are good opportunities and there’s a good living to be made in the trades.” b

More than carpet at

Elgin Carpet One and Home

Proud to be the kitchen of choice for Chef Jonathan Collins

By Kym Wolfe

E

lgin Carpet One Floor and Home has been operating in St. Thomas for over 40 years, and throughout that time the family-owned business has stayed true to its original vision: “We offer quality products that we can stand behind, expert installation and outstanding service,” says Rob Versteeg who, with his cousin Tom Versteeg, now runs the business that was started by Tom’s father, Jan Versteeg, in 1967. Over the years Elgin Carpet One has expanded to become a complete home decorating centre that carries all types of flooring, Benjamin Moore paint, Hunter Douglas blinds and interior shutters. The company has decorators on staff to help people make informed decorating choices for their homes. Elgin Carpet One moved into its Talbot Street location in 1976. Many of the store’s original customers, who came in to furnish their first homes, have continued to come back over the years. The Versteegs have worked with them as they have moved into new homes, and in many cases, with their children, as they became homeowners themselves. “One of the great things about being in a small town is the longstanding relationships you have,” says Tom. “It’s nice to recognize so many of your customers and be able to greet them by name!”

The company also has strong ties to many of the community’s prominent builders, contractors and professional painters who often source their products from Elgin Carpet One. As a member of Carpet One, the world’s largest floor covering coop and buying group, Elgin Carpet One Floor and Home is able to use the group’s purchasing power and pass along the savings to local customers. Like the Versteegs, most members of the Carpet One buying group are locally owned businesses that have invested in their own local communities. “We’ve been part of Carpet One since they first came to Canada, more than 20 years ago,” says Tom. “We offer a large selection of carpet, hardwood, laminate, ceramic tile, vinyl, area rugs and more, including exclusive brands like Relax, it’s Lees®, Tigressa and American Expressions Laminate and Hardwood which set the industry standard for beauty, style, and quality.”n

perfectly organized kitchen pantry, with easy access to every bit of space in your cupboards and drawers: ah, bliss! But if you can’t cope with the expense and inconvenience of a major kitchen renovation, how could you possibly transform your current reality into the kitchen cupboards that you dream about? Since establishing the Gliding Shelf Solutions dealership for the London and surrounding region two years ago, John King and Dennis Beker have been helping people put “life within reach” in their kitchens, as well as bathrooms and other areas of the house. “Installing glides is a relatively inexpensive way to improve the functionality of your kitchen,” says Beker. “They don’t change the look of your kitchen, but they maximize the use of existing space – particularly those problematic areas like hidden corners – and customers appreciate how easily they pull in and out.” Gliding Shelf Solutions is a Canadian company that prides itself in providing a high quality, custom-made product that is manufactured right here in Ontario. The industrial-strength rails and solidly constructed wood shelves are rated to carry up to 100 pounds of weight. They are easy to clean, maintenance-free, and guaranteed for life. Beker and King offer free consultations and are often asked for advice about which configurations would work best. Once a customer has reached a decision, the men will take measurements and immediately provide a firm quote, then return to install the custom-made glides within three weeks. “We often get calls from seniors and people with disabilities who want to remain in their homes and live independently,” says King. “Our shelves qualify for the Ontario government’s Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit. There’s a tremendous amount of satisfaction in knowing you’ve made someone’s daily life easier.”

ompetitive pricing, personalized customer service, and a large selection of building materials – those are some of the factors that keep homeowners and professionals coming back to Copp’s Buildall for their building supplies. The company is a homegrown success story that traces its roots back 137 years and four generations, to brothers William and Thomas Copp. Today Steve Copp, Thomas’s greatgrandson, is at the helm of the family enterprise and he’s hopeful that his son or daughter – or maybe both – will one day follow in his footsteps. According to Copp, one reason Copp’s has continued to thrive in a fiercely competitive building supply market, is that “we really listen to our customers and when we hear what they need we are able to respond. Decisions are made locally and can be implemented quickly.” Copp’s has evolved over time and is now one of the city’s leading suppliers of building materials, from the roof overhead to the flooring underfoot and almost everything in between. “We’re not simply a home centre,” says Copp. “We’re a leader in home building supplies, offer installation services and even have a manufacturing arm now.” Small and large contractors, developers, renovators, property managers and home builders come through Copp’s doors every day to source lumber, drywall, insulation, trim, doors, flooring, paint, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, hardware and more. “We have evolved into a more specialized business,” says Copp. He notes that in addition to carrying a wide selection of home improvement and building products,

Marv Stephenson

Five decades of

supplying excellence

By Kym Wolfe

If you only use quality product and you install it properly, chances are pretty slim that your customers will call you – until they need more new windows or doors,” says Marv Stephenson, explaining why it’s been easy for Stephenson Home Improvements to stand behind its lifetime warranty on workmanship. Marv and his brother Carl are proud to run the company established by their father, Grant, in 1959. The Strathroy-based business specializes in the sales and installation of replacement windows and doors, or supply for new construction. “Almost without exception, our work comes through referrals,” says Stephenson. “After operating in the same town and under the same name for 55 years, we’re known as a company you can trust to do good work. People know that if something does need after-sales service, we are still going to be around to look after it.” One sure sign of stability is the 2,000 square-foot showroom, located at 85 Maitland Terrace in Strathroy. Rather than having to choose their window style based on a hand sample, homeowners can see full-size windows in the showroom and can try them out to see how they operate.

Stephenson Home Improvement services customers mainly in Middlesex and Lambton, with some in Elgin and Huron counties. From the beginning, the company has never contracted out the installation work. Instead it has its own installers, on staff, trained to the standard of quality on which the Stephensons have built their reputation. In busy times customers may have to wait a few weeks to have their windows or doors installed, but Stephenson says he’s found, “People are willing to wait for high-quality work.” Windows and doors have changed a lot in the past 55 years. Vinyl has overtaken wood or aluminum windows; energy efficiency has become a necessity; new and higher standards have been introduced. While Stephenson Home Improvement has kept pace with those changes, some things remain the same. The company continues to offer small town friendliness, small town prices and a guarantee that promises customers peace of mind. n INFO

T 2015 Lincoln MKC New Lincoln crossover set to make its mark in hot market segment Starting from $39,940

he small premium utility vehicle segment is booming and Lincoln is set to grab a slice of that market with the addition to its lineup of a totally new entry, the 2015 MKC. This stylish crossover is loaded with the latest technologies, filled with luxurious appointments and boasts a couple of engine choices under the hood that deliver solid performances, plus impressive fuel efficiency. Similar in size to the Ford Escape – they share the same platform – the MKC raises the bar in terms of performance and handling. The driver can select the Normal setting with its softer ride, more relaxed steering, widerspaced transmission shift points and more tepid throttle input, or dial up to Sport mode for a firmer suspension, quicker shifts and steering and snappier throttle response – all at the touch of a dash-mounted button. Power is supplied by either a 240 horsepower, 2.0-litre four-cylinder or a 2.3-litre four-cylinder, that churns out 285 horsepower and 305 pound/ feet of torque. Both engines are fitted with a twin-scroll turbocharger and deliver their output to an all-wheel drive system through a six-speed automatic transmission. The cabin is roomy, luxuriously appointed and extremely quiet, with all the amenities, connectivity and safety features one would expect in a Lincoln.

T

he all-new 2015 Acura TLX is a premium mid-size sedan that delivers refined luxury, combined with advanced technologies and sporty performance, thanks to its superb handling dynamics and nextgeneration Acura powertrains. Consumers can choose between two new fuel-efficient engines – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that’s mated to an eightspeed, dual-clutch automatic transmission, with sporty paddle shifters, or a 3.5-litre V6 channelling its output through a nine-speed automatic gearbox, also fitted with paddle shifters. The V6 powertrain is also available with a new hydraulically controlled generation of Acura’s torquevectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. Precision All-Wheel Steer system is standard across the lineup. Acura is offering the TLX in three different trim levels and all models can be upgraded to the Technology Package, which adds such features as: a navigation system with voice recognition, AcuraLink connectivity and a premium Acura/ELS audio system with surround sound and 10 speakers. A top-of-the-line Elite package is available with V6 models. Distinctive exterior styling cues, such as the Jewel Eye LED headlights, combine with short overhangs and sculpted lines to give the TLX an athletic presence. The spacious, five-passenger cabin features a lengthy list of standard amenities, including heated front seats, power moonroof and automatic, dual-zone climate control.

V 2015 Volvo V60 T5 Sportwagon Improved power, efficiency highlight Volvo’s new Drive-E engine lineup Starting from $39,800

2015 Acura TLX Sporty new mid-size sedan delivers luxury, performance Starting from $34,990

olvo is introducing a new family of fuel-efficient engines as it revamps its lineup and the all-new 2015 V60 Sportwagon is offered with the new Drive-E powertrain. In fact, this new engine is also available in the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover. Drive-E uses a range of technologies that deliver more power, better fuel efficiency and greater driving pleasure, while reducing emissions. The Drive-E family is based on a single engine – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder. By adding various technologies, such as direct-injection, turbocharging, supercharging and electrification, Volvo says it can generate sufficient horsepower to suit the needs of all its products. The two engine configurations being offered in Canada are the turbocharged T5, which generates 240 horsepower, and the twin-charged (turbocharged and supercharged) T6, which produces 302 horsepower. Both engines are coupled to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The Drive-E powertrains are only being offered in front-wheel drive models. The Drive-E T5 powertrain also features a start-stop system and an ECO+ mode that optimizes shift points, engine control and throttle response to further improve fuel economy by up to five per cent. While fuel efficiency is a priority, the sleek, stylish Sportwagon is no slouch – it can accelerate to 96 km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

SO ALIVE, IT DISRUPTS THE AUTOMOTIVE UNIVERSE. THE F-TYPE COUPE. Everybody knew their proper place in the sports car food chain. Then we went and created this: the new F-TYPE Coupe. Crafted in lightweight aluminum for stunning responsiveness, and stirring things up with 550 supercharged horses in “R” trim. In fact, it even overpowers Porsche 911 Carrera S and Audi R8 4.2 with plenty to spare. Status quo be damned. This changes everything. The F-TYPE Coupe, starting from $72,900.

T

he gorgeous lines of the new 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe are obvious, but the seductive beauty of this sports car is matched by its outstanding performance. In fact, Jaguar says this all-aluminum coupe is the most dynamically capable, performance-focused sports car it has ever produced – and it’s difficult to dispute that claim. The Coupe is offered in three variations: the basic F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type R. The first two models are powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 in 340 or 380 horsepower trim. Combined with an eight-speed, close-ratio QuickShift transmission, with manual sequential shifting, it can propel the Coupe to 96 km/h in five seconds (or less with the higher output engine). If you need a cat that really leaps, the Type R version, with its 550 horsepower V8, will cover that distance in four seconds flat. Helping get all that power to the pavement is a new, electronically controlled, limited slip differential, standard on the Type R. The Type R also gains a torque vectoring system that uses the brakes on the inside wheels to help the car rotate through tight corners. Even without this added feature any F-Type cuts through bends in a road like a kitty on carpet.

2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe Stunning design matched by impressive performance Starting from $72,900

B 2014 Buick Encore Safety features highlight upgrades to Buick crossover Starting from $26,482

uick has added new radar-based safety features to its Encore crossover for 2014. This small luxury utility vehicle now offers available Rear Cross-Traffic and Side Blind Zone alert systems to enhance its list of safety features, which also includes: standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, rear vision camera, cornering brake control, available front and rear parking assist and 10 airbags, plus OnStar technology with advanced crash response and emergency assistance. This uniquely sized vehicle offers great maneuverability – ideal for the demands of urban driving – plus the versatility of a crossover, with seating for up to five adults. It also offers a cargo capacity of 18.8 cu. ft. when the split rear bench is folded down. Even with the rear seat upright, there’s 532 cu. ft. of cargo space – enough for six full grocery bags. The front seatback folds flat to accommodate long items, such as an eight-foot stepladder. There are also ample storage compartments for families on the go, with eight cup holders, four bins in the dash, storage compartments in all four doors, pockets in the seatbacks and bins under the rear cargo floor. The Encore, which is available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations, is offered in six trim levels, including premium leather appointments.

T

here’s a new player in the compact luxury crossover segment and its credentials suggest it will be a formidable contender against similar offerings from such competitors as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The all-new Audi Q3 is comparable in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan, or about 250 millimetres shorter than its Audi Q5 stablemate. However, you’ll still find about 1,400 litres of cargo space with the rear seat folded; with the seatback upright there’s about 460 litres of room for cargo. The Q3 is sleeker, with its coupe-like roofline, and lighter than the Tiguan, thanks to an aluminum hood and rear liftgate, as well as alloy suspension components. It’s powered by a turbocharged, 16-valve, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine is rated at 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque – certainly sufficient power to deliver lively acceleration, while the stout torque output provides low-end muscle for the cargo-hauling demands a small utility vehicle faces. The Q3 is loaded with standard features and amenities, including 18-inch wheels, HID headlamps and LED turn signals, running lights and tail lights, a panoramic sunroof, leather trim, heated 12-way power adjustable front seats, plus connectivity features such as Bluetooth and iPod input jack.

2015 Audi Q3 New Audi a solid contender in premium compact crossover category Starting from $35,800-$38,300

Cars, convenience, comparison at London airport auto MaLL

A

By Clare Dear

group of London dealers is applying the big-box, onestop shopping centre concept to the local auto-retailing scene. The seed for London City Airport Auto Mall was planted when some east London dealers realized they’d run out of room to grow – their tired dealerships needed new digs. Chris Leavens, of Leavens Volkswagen, got the ball rolling. The dealership had been a fixture on First Street for more than half a century, but it no longer had room to expand. So when Leavens heard the Ontario government was planning to divest hospital land it owned nearby, he started exploring the possibility of moving. At the same time he learned some other dealers in the area were contemplating relocating as well. Leavens teamed up with Brian Semkowski and Rick Baker at London City Chrysler and GM dealer Ken MacMaster to scout, as a group, for potential new locations. The Fanshawe/ Highbury area was a possibility, until city planners rejected that site. Finally the alliance settled on a 15-hectare site near the London airport.

“The property had good access and everyone knows where the airport is,” Leavens says of the $50-million development that now has four new stores completed, including the relocated Leavens Volkswagen and London City Chrysler, plus a new dealership, London City Mazda, also owned by Semkowski and Baker. The concept has an obvious advantage for consumers, who can kick the tires of several brands in one location. But there’s more than the convenience of one-stop shopping, says Leavens. “There are two synergies working here. Obviously, there’s the advantage for customers, but there are also economies of scale for the dealers. We can act as a group negotiating such things as advertising.” ”The dealerships now have sparkling new facilities, with Leavens, especially, enjoying the expansion from the 55-yearold, 12,000-square foot dealership to a bright, beautiful structure sprawling over 35,000 square feet. The mall is located on Dundas St. East at Crumlin Sideroad.

Dealership gets premium makeover Head to St. Thomas to check it out John Stollery and Bruce Dumouchelle

By Clare Dear

T

he Lincoln Motor Company is making significant moves to establish its identity as a luxury car brand, distancing itself from its parent company, Ford. The impact of this new marketing strategy is readily obvious in St. Thomas, where the former St. Thomas Ford-Lincoln dealership has been undergoing major renovations to create a new showroom and service facilities that meet the new corporate standards. “Lincoln has been separating itself from Ford in terms of identity,” say St. Thomas Lincoln owners John Stollery and Bruce Dumouchelle. They have invested heavily in renovations to upgrade the dealership. “It’s something any Lincoln dealer is expected to do – the company now has specific standards for Lincoln.” Changes to the St. Thomas dealership include a separate entrance to the new Lincoln showroom, a customer lounge and a service advisor dedicated

to Lincoln owners. It’s part of the premium experience the brand is developing for its clients. Other benefits include a loaner Lincoln while the customer’s car is being serviced. Another exclusive perk is their “date night” program, when prospective Lincoln buyers are given the keys to a Lincoln to take home for 24 to 48 hours, rather than the more typical quick test drive around the block. The renovations, which have expanded the dealership’s footprint by about 3,000 square feet, also include new facilities for the adjoining Ford store. In addition to a bright new showroom, the service department has been expanded and a quick-lube lane has been added. “It’s the first major renovation since the dealership was built in 1968,” according to the partners. “There have been cosmetic updates along the way, but this is the first time the actual footprint has been changed.”

The makeover has created challenges for the dealership’s staff, with salespeople working out of trailers while service department employees have had to dodge construction workers and their equipment. “There have been some moments,” they admit, “but it’s worked out well,” adding that a grand re-opening is planned for later this year or early in 2015. Stay tuned for more details.

Ramble through Artastic Elgin Where country and culture meet By Beth Stewart

T

he Elgin Arts Trail, developed four years ago by Elgin County Economic Development and Tourism, in partnership with the Elgin Business Resource Centre and the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre (STEPAC), is a route that highlights Elgin County artists, artisans, galleries, crafters and theatres. While the Trail is a year round venture, the partners will step it up this fall with Artastic Elgin, a twoday event that takes place September 27 and 28, during Culture Days: Ontario. Now in its second year, Artastic Elgin promises to stimulate participants’ creativity with two days of interactive events as artists and organizations offer public workshops, talks, demonstrations, and tours. This is a terrific opportunity to meet artists in their working environments and to learn firsthand how paintings, pottery, stained glass pieces and more are imagined, constructed and brought to fruition. It is also

an occasion to take a peek behind the scenes of a variety of arts-based ventures. New this year is the inclusion of live theatre via Aylmer Performing Arts Council and Port Stanley Festival Theatre. The Aylmer Performing Arts Council operates out of Aylmer’s Old Town Hall, built in 1873, and known for its perfect acoustics and Italianate design. The Port Stanley Festival Theatre is also located in a former town hall. Built in 1927, the building sits on the north shore of Lake Erie. It is just a hop, skip and a jump from the theatre to the Art Emporium Gallery, Portside Gallery and Rubyeyes Kraftwerks. Also new this year is Posh Fine Arts, owned and operated by Ian and Saousan McLay. The gallery is located in the couples’ stunning 1853 Aylmer home. Pieces of Canadian art are displayed alongside the owner’s handcrafted jewelry in the home’s living room, den and front hallway. on, says Laura Woermke, executive director and curator, as it combines Artastic Elgin with their annual “West End Arts Mingle.” Participation in the interactive elements was huge last year. “People just went for it,” Woermke recalls. Sherri Howard, STEPAC educator and event coordinator, says on Saturday the centre will have free “famous artists” activities for kids, supported by people acting as living works of art. This will be followed by “Drink and Draw,” work/social time with sketching artists and topped off with a ticketed evening performance by the Sheridan Band. Other participants in Artastic Elgin are: Anything Used and Sparta Country Candles, The Arts and Cookery Bank, Clayworks Studio, Concreations, Minerva Art Gallery and Custom Framing, Peter Robson Studio, Pinecroft Ceramic Arts Studio and Village Crier Gallery. What a delightful way to ramble through the Elgin countryside, with its charming city, towns and villages. The Elgin Arts Trail business plan recognizes that culture is important to tourism because it “creates distinctiveness,” says Elgin County’s tourism development coordinator Kathryn Russell. “Our role,” says Russell, “is to attract visitors to the area. Artastic Elgin promises a different experience; it puts a different spin on it.” n

Retire in style

A full spectrum of options is available in London By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

I

t’s not your grandfather’s retirement anymore. Today’s retirees are facing longer and healthier lives than any demographic cohort before them and they’re determined to make the most of it. Recognizing this, developers of retirement communities are building in myriad luxury touches and resort-style amenities that support freedom and independent living. But while potential residents appreciate the pool, the spa and the packed social calendar, they’re often looking at more practical aspects as they shop for their new home, say experts from three London communities. Safety and security top the list. When family members are not close at hand, they’re reassured by the fact that there’s an emergency call system and staff on hand 24/7, says Marlene Powner, general manager at Longworth Retirement Residence.

44 Lifestyle September/October 2014

“For the family there’s a sense of relief knowing that if something happens, like a fall, someone will be at hand to help,” she says. They are also looking to the future, says Tanis Siddique, general manager at Grand Wood Park Apartments and Retirement Community: “They are asking questions like, ‘what if support needs change?’ They want to know (about) the continuum of care options we offer. That would probably be one of the most critical questions.” Certainly, a primary consideration is “an environment where there is someone to help if and when needed and where services are available as needed,” agrees Jan Novak, general manager at Richmond Woods Retirement Residence. Equally important to the potential residents is the ambiance, he says. It’s not necessarily the bells and whistles, Novak explains. “It’s the feeling they get when they walk through the door, the friendly 

Finding the fit The decision to move to a retirement residence is life-changing, and the transition can be emotional. But it can also be a “positive, life-enriching experience,” says Karen Fuller, eldercare specialist and certified caregiver coach. A happy ending will result from a carefully considered and sensitively undertaken process, says Fuller, who has shepherded many caregivers and their parents along this journey through her company, Care Full Heart Coaching. Too often, people wait until a crisis forces the decision and there is no time for the necessary process, she says. “The conversation needs to start early.” Once the conversation is underway, Fuller notes some key factors to consider: • Look at what you really need and set priorities. • Consider affordability and stay within the budget. Costs for facilities vary widely and added services down the road will cause those to increase. • Do the homework. Research what is available; look online and visit local placement coordination services. • Do the groundwork. Visit residences, not just once but two, three or even more times. Talk to residents about their experiences and watch resident and resident-staff interactions. • Make the decision together. Involving the potential resident is paramount. “It is a very final decision and the acceptance level is not the same if they’re not involved.”

“It’s the feeling they get when they walk through the door, the friendly interactions they see between residents, and the sense that they can make this their home.” interactions they see between residents, the homey feeling and the sense that they can make this their home.” They need to “feel the place with all of their senses,” Powner agrees. And they need to feel that it’s conducive to continuing their lifestyle. “They want to continue to be and continue to do as they always have.” So additional highlights, like the hair salon for women accustomed to weekly visits to the hairdresser, are essential components, she says. And men, who may have belonged to a club like Kiwanis, want to feel they can bring fellow members in for a meeting, or continue to attend outside meetings. It’s essential that they’re not cut off from friends and family, as life goes on. The key, says Novak, is to break the stereotype that a retirement residence is synonymous with a nursing home. In fact, it’s still an independent lifestyle that supplies all necessities and amenities while allowing residents to get on with living. “They realize that it’s their own apartment,” he says. They still have the freedom to come and go and do what they please and participate in organized events as much or as little as they like. It’s also about staying part of a community, says Siddique. At Grand Wood, the entire recreation program, including exercise programs, cooking classes and educational workshops, are open to seniors in the surrounding community. “One of the values at Regal (Grand Wood’s parent company) is to support seniors in the community. It’s something we’re committed to,” she says. This includes community organization

relationships, like Grand Wood’s partnership with the Grand Theatre, giving residents access to its stage productions. Powner agrees that bringing in the community is an important component and something that is part of special events at Longworth, such as the Canada Day fireworks display. And keeping families involved is equally important, she adds. Efforts to that end include facilitating computer interactions via Skype to allow residents to participate in a family wedding or graduation. And families are always welcome in the main dining room or for celebrations in the private dining room, where Mom may actually cook the dinner as she always has. All experts agree that today’s retirees and their families are shopping around for this type of accommodation. They’re doing their research online and often making multiple visits to potential communities.

Intricate lace, bejewelled necklines, daring backs ... the latest trends for 2015

I

By Heather Toskan

f wedding bells will ring for you in the coming months, you may be interested in some of the latest bridal gown trends. “Kate Middleton’s influence on bridal wear continues, contributing to the ongoing love of lace. Designers are extremely creative in their designs and sometimes combine different types of lace, as well as beads and crystals, on the same gown,” notes Eva Petrov, the owner of Petrov Bridal in London. Fashionably longer trains create striking silhouettes on slim-fitting, full-length sheaths and full-skirted wedding gowns alike. Full-skirted gowns may feature details such as nippedin waists, sweetheart necklines and softly flowing cascades of ruffles. 

the gown for 2015

the gowns: Fullskirted and sheath dresses alike are on-trend this season, with lace being of particular interest. LeFt: This Eddy K Couture gown features embroidered tulle with hand-beaded touches. RIght: The mermaid-style Pronovias dress features an embroidered bodice with tulle, organza and nylon skirt. ABoVe: This gorgeous, lace Eddy K gown showcases embroidered velure tulle, with the barest hint of skin. Comes in choices of champagne and ivory or ivory on ivory.

Veils fashioned of a single layer of plain tulle also contribute to a stylish appearance. Eyelash trim is another lacey innovation that adds edge to gowns, veils and bridal accessories. When it comes to headpieces, the rage for fascinators remains firmly established. Floral headbands and beaded hair clips are among the other fancy top notes. Veils fashioned of a single layer of plain tulle also contribute to a stylish appearance, with longer, cathedrallength veils lending grandeur to fulllength, fitted sheaths. “A general rule of thumb is: the narrower the dress, the longer the veil,” advises Petrov. According to Petrov, other current trends that will continue to gather strength throughout 2015 include gowns with very low backs, the return of cap and longer sleeves and lacey, backwards boleros. So-called backwards boleros button down the back and often feature cap sleeves, adding a fine layer of removable coverage to sleeveless and strapless gowns. Gowns with longer illusion sleeves, fashioned of net and embellished and edged with lace, are another hallmark of fashion-forward bridal style. “Today’s self-confident bride likes to stand out, but seems less inclined to be caught up in fleeting trends,” says Petrov. “We’re not seeing local demand for more colourful bridal gowns as in Europe and New York, but many of our brides express their sophisticated personalities in pale gold, champagne and soft taupe bridal gowns,” adds Petrov. Many modern brides are also choosing to display their personal style by strolling down the aisle in a favorite pair of shoes or boots instead of traditional bridal pumps. n

If you’re shopping for a new dress to wear to a fall wedding, there is an abundance of styles, colours and lengths to choose from. The formality of the wedding may factor into your dress selection. Formal weddings call for the glamour of full-length gowns, although shorter lengths are also popular. According to Sharpe, both full and cocktail length dresses and gowns are stylish choices, and fall’s fashionforward, mid-length choice surfaces in “tea length” fancy frocks. “Customers want a dress that they feel and look great wearing, but many also say that they want a dress that they’ll definitely be able to wear again on other occasions,” notes Sharpe. 

It’s nearly impossible to truly distract from the bride, but it’s still considered a breach of etiquette for a wedding guest to wear anything that would draw attention away from the bride and her attendants. “Form-fitting sheaths and fit-and-flare dresses and gowns are both stylish and universally flattering; be sure to avoid wearing anything too tight, too short or too revealing to a wedding,” advises Sharpe. Although it’s fine to wear black to a wedding, as long as the style is festive, a wedding offers the perfect time to break away from wearing black and other neutral hues. Shades of green, blue, wine, amethyst and hot pink, and dresses of all lengths fashioned from abstract geometric and floral prints also stand out with style. “Dresses fashioned from lace and similar textures are popular and may feature subtle metallic highlights,” notes Sharpe, who adds that “dresses with three-quarter length sleeves, and elegantly embellished dresses and gowns are also stylish and well liked.” Fully sequined dresses, as well as those highlighted with scattered embellishments – including beads, pearls and coloured crystals – are striking for those who like to shine. Copper and gold are having a metallic moment in jewelry and other accessories, although silver has not lost its luster. Accessorize your dressy look with a fancy envelope bag or beaded clutch, some sparkling jewelry and a pair of fancy shoes. “Statement” necklaces with large stones and T-strap pumps are also on trend this fall. If you’re wearing a sleeveless dress or gown, layer on some extra warmth and style with a coordinating dressy shawl or jacket. n

Dreamy

destination wedding A guide to getting away to get hitched

G

By Jill Ellis-Worthington

listening beaches, glorious sunsets and gentle breezes – that’s what many couples dream about for their wedding day, but often think that it might be too expensive or too much trouble. Patrick and Becky Oliphant made that dream come true last November, when they married on a beach on the Mayan Riviera in front of 61 of their closest friends and family, and they say that the process wasn’t complicated or expensive. Choosing Mexico made sense for the couple, who wanted a reasonably priced experience for their guests at a destination that could be reached within a few hours of leaving home. They chose Karisma Hotels and Resorts' Azul Fives because it is an all-inclusive stay within a short driving

distance of the Cancun airport. According to the couple, these are all considerations that should be at the top of the list for other couples considering a destination wedding. Some destination weddings can be pricier, according to Mickey Smith of Cruise Holidays. If distance and budget are lesser considerations, she urges couples to consider Paul Gauguin Cruises to have an unforgettable South Seas experience for their wedding. “You could be married in Bora Bora in an over-water bungalow and then get on the ship for your honeymoon,” she explains, adding that this is truly a high-end experience. A ‘Love Boat’ wedding experience can be reasonably priced, she adds. Look to Princess Cruises to cruise your way into married life. Onboard activities abound for all members of the family and wedding party, including 

Wedding Collection to make planning and execution of your special day seamless. Though customization is available, couples can pick from six themes such as Coastal Bliss (casual and contemporary beach feel), Pure Glamour (chic with the style of Old Hollywood) or Colonial Charm (elegance of Mexican culture). Couples can also mix and match elements of each. Karisma offers a special price to couples who want to choose all elements personally, or work with an on-site wedding co-ordinator to do all the planning, like the Oliphants did from home. The Bride’s Dress Rehearsal is a three-night package, which is offered once monthly to couples so they can visit the resort ahead of time. Whatever destination or form of wedding-day-away you may be contemplating, legalizing the union in Canada should be considered, according to Smith. “The captain on the ship may or may not be able to legally marry you,” she says. “Get married at home, then you don’t have to worry, as each destination has different requirements.” That’s exactly what the Oliphants did and were happy that they had even less to think about during their getaway wedding experience. Because their experience was so positive, the Oliphants recommend it highly. “One of the couples with us loved the experience so much, they decided to have a destination wedding, too,” says Becky. n

children, so everyone will be entertained while the lucky couple enjoys time together after the captain marries them. For another type of out-to-sea wedding experience, Smith recommends ‘un-cruising.’ Smaller ships – accommodating 36 guests – cruise the Hawaiian Islands, offering a more personal experience, she says. Cruise from Molokai to Hawaii (the Big Island), while enjoying swimming with manta rays, jamming with local musicians, kayaking or paddle boarding. Smith adds that if your wedding party and guest list combine to 36, why not take over the whole ship? The ability to spend several days celebrating their big day with their guests was an important factor in the Oliphants' decision to have a destination wedding. “With a traditional wedding you put so much work and money into a 24-hour period,” explains Patrick, “where we got to celebrate in paradise for a week with our friends and family.” Karisma Hotels and Resorts offer a Memorable Moments Signature

ou’ve found the perfect mate, have set the date and now it’s time to find the place. Whether you want a garden wedding with a few friends, a large, lavish event or just you and your loved one in a relaxed, barefoot setting, there are lots of choices.

f Bellamere Winery

and event Centre

Your large, lavish wedding dreams can come true at Bellamere, as up to 300 guests can be hosted. With both outdoor and indoor settings for your special day, weather won’t be a factor at Bellamere Winery and Event Centre. The services of a wedding co-ordinator are included in your package price. Budget-conscious brides may want to consider holding the ceremony and reception on Sunday afternoon, as the cost is considerably reduced. Bellamere is nearly a one-stop shop for all your nuptial needs, with food, beverages and bartending available, although it is BYOO (bring your own officiant.) You’ll be assured that everything’s to your liking with a wine tasting and ceremony rehearsal one week prior to your big day. www.bellamere.com

Choose from indoor and outdoor venues to ensure your medium to large wedding goes off rain or shine. Up to 80 guests are easily accommodated indoors, while the outdoor areas provide space for as many as 150.

The bride and groom arrange on-site catering and liquor licensing through Culinary Catering. www.heritagelondonfoundation.org/ index_files/elsieweddings.html

f FanshaWe Conservation area Where can you find a venue with a water view in London? Fanshawe Conservation Area.

For couples seeking a relaxed, outdoor setting for up to 150 guests, this is a great option, but it’s a real do-it-yourself affair. The happy couple must arrange for tents, chairs, tables, catering, music, officiants and liquor licensing. The Beach Pavilion overlooks Fanshawe Lake, a lovely setting for your sunset ceremony. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, your ceremony can be held in the pavilion  ~ Continued on page 62

with the large windows opened to let everyone enjoy the view. Likewise, the Watson Porter Pavilion can host indoor or outdoor ceremonies, with guests enjoying lovely lake views. www.fanshaweconservationarea.ca/ weddings-at-fanshawe/

f Idlewyld Inn and Spa Your entire day will be imbued with the gracious feeling of yesteryear in this recently renovated Old South property. The tree-covered patio provides a lovely ceremony option, while the wine cellar downstairs is the perfect place for the reception. The services of the wedding coordinator will ensure the day goes off without a hitch. The Idlewyld kitchen staff, headed by Chef Trevor Stephens, provides catering and the entire venue is licensed. Photography can take place anywhere in this historic home, built in 1878 as a private residence. One of several original, marble fireplaces would be a lovely setting, as would the lush gardens. A Rolls Royce Phantom is available to enhance that feeling of yesteryear, for both wedding shots and transportation. This is a good option if out-oftowners make up the majority of your guest list, as on-site accommodation is available in luxurious, updated rooms. www.idlewyldinn.com

DOMUS DEVELOPMENTS

T

here’s something new on the rise in north London’s Masonville community. North Point Lofts is the city’s first modern loft condominium project, says Mike Mescia, of project development and management at Domus Developments. “There’s nothing else like it in the city,” Mescia says. “It’s very modern. It’s a long building with a big footprint, but at only four floors and 51 units, it has an intimate community feeling.” With full-height windows in the suites, which boast 10- and 12-foot ceilings, the exterior appearance is primarily glass, framed by light panels. The units, ranging from 1,100 to 2,000 square feet in seven floor plans, are fully customizable, Mescia notes. “You can even move walls around.” Standard finishes include hardwood flooring and granite counters. Each unit has its own air handler for heat and air conditioning. Gas service is available for fireplaces, stoves and even outdoor barbecues. The suites include oversize balconies — the largest measures 52 feet long and 500 square feet. Corner units have wrap-around balconies and main level suites include fenced courtyards. Location is also a premier feature, Mescia says. Within walking distance to Masonville, all amenities are at the doorstep and can be accessed via a walking path through a landscaped and private garden.

HAYHOE HOmEs

T

he design of Hayhoe Homes’ new presentation Model home, in St. Thomas’s Orchard Park South neighbourhood, blends contemporary expression with functionality, says company partner Joe Hayhoe. The exterior natural architectural stone, complemented by pillars and arches, is a new look for St. Thomas, according to Hayhoe. It’s a clean and contemporary look that flows into the interior, he says. This is achieved with the open-concept layout and accents, such as the use of ceramic tile and hardwood flooring, in a palette of greys and warm, earthy browns, balanced by lighter wall tones and white kitchen cabinets, as well as the natural stacked-stone fireplace overmantle. The floor plan has been designed with flexible use in mind, Hayhoe says. A front bedroom, accessed from the foyer, with its own bathroom and generous closet space, would be ideal for a home office or a young adult suite, he notes. The master retreat, with its walk-in closet and stylish ensuite bathroom, featuring glassed-in shower and freestanding soaker tub, is tucked away behind the kitchen, affording complete privacy. The finished basement, with an additional six inches of ceiling height built in, includes a family room, bedroom and threepiece bathroom, as well as abundant storage space.

rookside III, the new Model home by MP Custom Homes in Dalewood Meadows, a northeast St. Thomas subdivision, is “an ideal empty nester home,” says sales representative Peter De Boer. The 1,414-square-foot bungalow features an open-concept kitchen and great room and main-floor laundry. A front den could allow for a second bedroom. The master suite, off the great room, includes a large walk-in closet and four-piece ensuite bathroom. A cathedral ceiling in the great room creates a spacious ambiance. This room also includes a gas fireplace framed with tile and painted mantle. The Model showcases a finished lower level, including recreation room, two bedrooms and bathroom. An additional six inches, added to the foundation, provides extra ceiling height on this level. Preverco hardwood flooring in the kitchen and great room is a new feature. Its brushed texture presents a rustic look, De Boer says, adding that it’s also extremely wear resistant, making it easy to live with. The kitchen features a contemporary appearance, the dark wood island topped with light-coloured granite contrasting with white cabinetry and dark laminate perimeter counters. The home’s exterior is all-brick. A fully-insulated, two-car garage flanks a covered front porch boasting natural stone knee columns and tapered posts.

DONWEST HOMES

onwest Custom Homes has a treat for 2014 homebuyers. Until year’s end, the company is offering each customer its “Too Good NOT To Be True” free granite kitchen countertop upgrade. “It’s a full package for the entire kitchen,” says Donwest vice-president Art Pol. “It’s exactly the same price as they would pay for laminate. This is the one item that separates the upper-end houses (from those priced similarly with fewer upgrades) and everybody thinks ‘I can’t afford that.’ It’s typically $3,000 to $4,000.” The offer started as a three-month promotion in partnership with Casey’s Creative Kitchens, which launched its own granite and stone fabrication plant in 2012. “We think it’s such a great deal, so we’ll continue it to the end of the year (2014) and pick up the tab for it,” Pol says. Customers are able to choose from five colours of Italian granite. These include a white with grey speckle, black and white, primarily black, dark green and a yellow-beige with brown and burgundy highlights, says Casey’s Jamie Willemse. He adds that one of these is sure to complement your kitchen’s décor perfectly. Granite counters, as well as sample slabs showing the available colours, can be viewed in Donwest’s Model home at 93 Westlake Dr. in St. Thomas’s northeast Dalewood Meadows subdivision. Event raises funds in Sarnia

By Beth Stewart

M

ustering the courage to step forward and talk to a friend or loved one about suicide might be a little easier with an entire community behind you. That’s why suicide prevention is the most recent of several causes that the Art Assembly has stepped forward to support with fundraising driven by the assistance of local artists. Art Assembly members Lynne “Kenneith” Brogden, Sue Galos, John Hopkins, Peg and Bill Kivi, Lynn and Bill Stewart, and Pam Turner-Wong have worked tirelessly to put together events that showcase art and raise funds for local charities. November’s An Event Apart is their third production, and its beneficiary is Sarnia Lambton Suicide Prevention, which promotes safeTALK suicide alertness for everyone. An Event Apart opens on November 14 with a gala evening of art, music, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and door prizes and runs until November 16. An 18,000 square foot greenhouse at DeGroot’s Nurseries, 1840 London Line, Sarnia, will be transformed into a magical realm where creativity runs wild. “We change it up every time,” says Lynn Stewart. “This year’s theme is Winter Wonderland — twinkly lights and all.” Some of the work will be set up gallery style; some will be displayed in situ amongst furnishings provided by Sarnia’s The Brick and Petrolia’s ParTee Rentals.

Teapot 4.5 inches in height, 8 inches in diameter; cups 3.5 by 3 inches; tray 13 by 10 inches.

This juried show takes 18 months of organization. Top-quality artists are actively recruited from all over Ontario. This year’s fete includes work from over 35 artists including Ottawaarea stone carver John Schweighardt, Petrolia painter Ariel Lyons, and Strathroy basket weaver Alice Lingard. Also available will be Stewart’s fully functional thrown and/ or hand-built vessels, decorated with her signature grapevine motifs. An Event Apart is a win-win situation for the artists, the charity, and local businesses, says Stewart. With support from Comfort Inn and Tourism Sarnia, this year’s event is part of a Bluewater Arts and Culture Getaway weekend and a tantalizing package is available that includes accommodations, tickets to the gala, and a variety of related workshops and events. n INFO

Delaware property offers a taste of the past and present

t may not be possible to soar with the eagles but the purchaser of South Bank, a rural estate outside Delaware, can certainly share space with them. The 54-acre property, dotted with woodland tracts, fragrant fields and fenced horse paddocks, wrapped on two sides by 3,700 feet of flowing Thames River, is home to a family of bald eagles. The pastoral landscape and its fully restored century home are just steps from Longwoods Road, with its flow of traffic off Highway 402. It’s seconds from the centre of the village of Delaware and 10 minutes from downtown London. accessed a wrap-around verandah have been preserved on the inside but converted to energy-efficient windows outside, where gardens have replaced the porch. An addition at the rear of the home accommodates an expansive family room with Pella French doors on three sides, affording full views of the surrounding gardens, stone patios and walkways and tennis courts on the south lawn. The focal point of the room is a corner fireplace with marble surround and a walnut mantle fashioned from wood harvested on the property. There is also an adjacent office area, two-piece bathroom and a mudroom and laundry area leading to an outside walkway. On the upper level, an elegant master suite spans the rear of the house with windows overlooking the river to the north and tennis courts on the south. It features a cedar-lined walk-in closet and spacious ensuite bathroom with under-floor heating, an oversized glassed-in shower, maple cabinets and marble counters and bathtub deck. The four-piece main bathroom features slate flooring, countertop and tub and shower surrounds. This level has two guest bedrooms. The large L-shaped front-facing room was the original master suite with an adjacent nursery, now a sitting area. It has its own two-piece bathroom, a generous closet and access, via pulldown ladder, to the attic, finished for storage. Behind the house, a flagstone patio with built-in gas barbecue, in-ground pool and change house provides an ideal space for summertime outdoor relaxing. While no horses graze in the paddocks today, the farm — one-time home of an offspring of Secretariat — has a large barn with 10 stalls, spacious tack room and adjacent garage area. n INFO

Cutting sugar to cut obesity By Jill Ellis-Worthington

Busy lives + easy access to processed foods + inactivity = concerns aBout the amount of sugar in our daily diet

57, Louise Daw is struggling to give up her lifelong love affair with sugar. “I’m a major sugar junkie,” she laughs, admitting that her go-to snack has always been candy, “candy floss, Popeye cigarettes and jelly beans – anything that’s just pure sugar,” in times of stress. After seeing multiple stories on the evils of sugar, the health promotion specialist gave up sugary snacks all together and hasn’t suffered ill effects or withdrawal symptoms. Daw reports being “more clear headed” and feeling good about herself for not giving into her cravings. Daw also teaches several group fitness classes each week, so she feels that she’s in good shape, but is hoping to lose 10 pounds as an additional benefit to this dietary change. Likewise, Logan Morand made the decision to cut back on his sugar intake by eliminating soft drinks from his diet last spring. At time of writing, he’s been pop free for three months and has lost 10 pounds. “I just got sick of it,” he says, “so I got rid of it.” The 12-year-old, Grade 8 student reports that substituting water, milk and juice for his daily dose of two pops has given him renewed energy, and he is participating in more sports and is more active than before. “When I lost weight it was easier to run and now I like to walk more,” says Morand. He’s also rollerblading, fishing and playing road hockey. Seeing his progress, his father – an avid soft drink consumer – has gotten on the bandwagon, as have three of Morand’s friends, who he’s also inspired. 

Dr. Paula Dworatzek, PhD RD, associate professor in the division of food and nutritional sciences, Brescia University College at Western University, visiting associate professor with the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University, shares Daw’s and Morand’s concerns about sugar; a recent study that she did points out some of the ways that children are consuming it. Called the Lunches Study, funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, it looked at food and kids. Dworatzek sent university students into area schools to observe 321 Grade 3 and 4 children to see what they brought in their lunch boxes and what they actually consumed. It revealed that the average London student eats 40 grams of sugar during school hours. “That was actually more than we were expecting. They are bringing far more snacks and sugar-sweetened drinks than anticipated,” she explains. The World Health Organization presently recommends that sugar should make up no more than 10 per cent of a person’s daily caloric intake but is contemplating lowering that recommendation to five per cent. For a person whose daily caloric intake is 2,000 calories, this represents just 25 grams of sugar per day total. Though she’s concerned that consuming too much sugar could be unhealthy, Dworatzek thinks that eating this little sugar might be a hard goal to reach. “With the proliferation of foods available – more than we’ve ever had – there are always new things to try in the grocery stories and they taste delicious." Because of the increasing speed of daily life for most families, Dworatzek feels that while cooking whole foods from scratch is optimal, it’s not always possible. She has three girls and feels that healthy foods can be incorporated: “Should we try and make good choices as individuals to eat whole foods? Sure we should, but we’re all working lots of hours and sometimes traveling at dinnertime to drop kids off at activities. Our 

“Peppers and carrots are naturally sweet and having that stuff prepared makes it so much easier to reach for something that’s going to take care of the craving.” lifestyle means we have to rely on manufactured foods to some degree.” Part of the problem is that people aren’t learning to cook at home as they did in the past, so making fromscratch meals from whole foods often isn’t possible, if they don’t have the skills to do it. The Ontario Home Economics Association is lobbying the provincial government to reinstate family studies courses in secondary schools. While acknowledging it is difficult to mandate children eat vegetables, Dworatzek encourages parents to include vegetables in their children’s lunches. “Only 40 per cent of the students had vegetables in their lunches, while 95 per cent had snacks (of a high sugar variety). But those that had them (veggies) ate them (20 per cent were uneaten), so if you give children vegetable options they’ll eat more of them.” Daw agrees, saying now that she’s keeping raw vegetables cleaned, cut and ready to go that she’s substituting those when she feels the need for something sweet. “Peppers and carrots are naturally sweet and having that stuff prepared makes it so much easier to reach for something that’s going to take care of the craving.”n
