ary Ann Evans felt the need to write under the pseudonym George Eliot because of the tolerance of gender inequality during her time. She lived from 1819 to 1880, a period in which women were literally property of their husbands or fathers, so for both personal and professional reasons – and to have her work as an novelist and poet taken seriously – she was forced to appropriate a male identity. How the world has changed. We see this in stories about renovations, such as the one featured in a story on page 29. Women are often the decision makers in the family now, actively pursuing excellence for their families and choosing how and where they will live; how they will spend money, and what priorities are important in their family’s lives. Above, Eliot reflects on her love of autumn and that’s something that hasn’t changed. In southwestern Ontario we are so fortunate to see the change of seasons through the lens of colour as our climate cools. This often promotes a feeling of wanting to nest and results in families renovating or redecorating. You’ll have

a chance to make the most of your renewed interest and energy for such projects at the new Décor and Reno Show to be held in late October at the Western Fair Agriplex. For a sneak peek, check out Kathy Rumleski’s story on page 47. We welcome back Beth Stewart to our team of writers. After a hiatus, Beth returns to inform readers about the rich local arts and culture scene on page 72. Unlike George Eliot, we have the liberty to be our true selves, so celebrate the turn of seasons and celebrate your individuality as you kick back and relax while reading this issue of Lifestyle Magazine.

o experience Northern Ontario’s late summer and fall splendor a ride on the Agawa Canyon Tour train may be just the adventure you are looking for. Departing Sault Ste. Marie daily - this season between June 21 and October 10 - the train meanders through the Canadian wilderness along the eastern shore of Lake Superior to the Agawa Canyon. This day-long trip features a 90-minute layover at the Canyon, where adventurers are free to choose their level of activity. For the fit, there is a 250-foot hike up the canyon lookout trail to experience a “breathtaking,

panoramic view of the canyon,” according to the website. Nature lovers can stay close to the train and still experience much of the flora and fauna the canyon has to offer while enjoying a picnic lunch. For those with moderate fitness abilities, a 40-minute, return-trip hike will take you to the Bridal Veil Falls, while experiencing the varied wildlife and plant life on several trails. If some of the scenes experienced at the canyon seem familiar, it may not be a coincidence. According to the Agawa Canyon website: “Several members of Canada’s Group of Seven painted in the Algoma region

between 1918 and 1923, including Lawern Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer. To gain access to this remote region they rented a boxcar from the Railway. Their paintings brought this vast, rugged and beautiful part of the country to fellow Canadians and the world. Painters might like to bring along an easel and supplies to capture their particular experience on canvas. As the season moves into late September and October, the fall colours become more spectacular. It is for this reason that the excursion prices vary. From June 21 to September 11, the tour costs $84.00 for adults, with discounts offered for seniors, youths and children. From September 12 to October 10, the tour costs $102.00 for adults and seniors, with discounts for youths and children remaining in effect. Children under two years old ride for free. n

“They (homeowners) can look at magazines and websites, but this is a chance to touch and feel, to see the workmanship firsthand,” he says. This year’s Parade, October 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., showcases a variety of projects, including a number of whole home interior renovations. Some trends on display include a move toward more open concept living and the use of healthier and greener products, something Malloy notes is a growing concern among homeowners. There is also a fundraising element to the Parade that supports housing-related charities, he adds. This year, proceeds support Sanctuary London, a healthy, welcoming community for people living in poverty or feeling excluded from society. A $10 passport can be purchased at any home on the Parade. This year’s line-up includes the following.

■ 856 Wellington Street Three floors in this central London century home have been completely renovated by Alair Homes. The project includes a new open-concept kitchen overlooking a rear addition, featuring a cedar wrap-around deck.

■ 460 eaSt Mile road The traditional façade on this Oakridge ranch home gives no indication of the interior transformation, created by Anden Design Build in three separate renovations over five years. The most recent project - a new kitchen addition, main-floor revamp and backyard landscaping - follows the creation of a full basement retreat and a master bedroom/bath makeover. 

■ 4308 Masterson CirCle This Lambeth home had great bones but was transformed by CCR Building and Remodeling. It now has a totally refreshed main level, including new flooring, a complete kitchen and ensuite remodel and new exterior door.

■ 120 springfield CresCent Covenant Construction created an expansive family retreat in this west Byron home by combining the space and uniting the area with grey engineered flooring. The modern custom kitchen features a grey island and bar area with complementary white perimeter cabinets and quartz countertops. Lighting and a staircase transformation gives the home the atmosphere of a mountain retreat.

■ 5 deveron CresCent This fully-gutted bungalow in southeast London has a new lease on life. A Covenant Construction makeover created open spaces, custom cabinetry and a floor-toceiling fireplace with media centre. Moving the stairs resulted in more functional living space on both levels. The basement, featuring a stone bar with industrial pipe shelves and vinyl plank flooring, is the ultimate man cave. 

■ 90 Central avenue, unit 5 This is a new home built as an addition to the historic Bishop’s Mansion overlooking the Thames River and the Blackfriars neighbourhood. Duo Building created a historically accurate, energy efficient and innovative design, built to the company’s standard of excellence.

■ 203 Carriage Hill Drive This transformation of a 1990s home in north London’s Masonville district, by Millennium Construction and Design, involved the removal of the wall between kitchen and dining room to make the space open concept. Hardwood flooring unifies the space, along with two granite-topped islands and a combination of painted and stained cabinets.

■ 972 Fogerty Street This 10-year-old home in northeast London was redesigned, by Millennium Construction and Design, to create a fresh open concept. Better gardens S

ince launching its landscape services in 1998, TYDAN Landscape Design/Build has continually pushed the envelope, branching out with new and innovative services.

and homes

A family business, based in southwestern Ontario, TYDAN has expanded their horizon, offering complete home renovations. The company is directed by Paul Rancourt, with wife Anne Marie as secretary-treasurer, son Tyler (the Ty in TYDAN) as construction supervisor, daughter Danielle (the Dan in the name) as design consultant, and nephew Mike Paul as carpenter. Since starting their business they have had a clear understanding of all aspects of the two separate entities. “Many of our clients are people we’ve done work for, who know our track record and have trust in us,” says Paul Rancourt. Other clients come from those customers through word-of-mouth referrals. TYDAN’s renovation portfolio includes remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and basements, building additions, new construction of garages and upgrading of existing storage facilities, improving exterior curb appeal with embellishments, such as new siding and roofing, often complimented by landscape enhancements. They also do interior décor cosmetics — from a fresh coat of paint to new flooring or custom woodworking and cabinetry.

The Rancourts are no strangers to building on their successes. Their landscape business has grown to include custom design and build of decks, pergolas, sheds and fencing, as well as patios and walkways. Specialties include designing water features and installing interlock paving. One of the company’s most significant innovations has been in water conservation, including stormwater harvesting and rain gardens. They have installed several residential rainwater harvesting systems, which provide significant savings on water usage and benefits. TYDAN is a certified contractor with Aquascape, a USA-based leader in innovative rainwater conservation technologies. Collection and use of rainwater is becoming increasingly prevalent with homeowners and businesses, Rancourt says. Recently TYDAN installed a rain garden at Fanshawe Park Conservation Area, a first for London. Tyler is also certified by Aquascape as a master pond builder, one of only two in this region of Ontario. TYDAN’s efforts have garnered accolades over the years, including Awards of Excellence from Landscape Ontario and several awards for displays at London’s Spring Home and Garden Show and the London Home Builders’ Association Lifestyle Home Show. The company is a professional member of Landscape Ontario as well as ICPI (Interlock Concrete Paving Institute) and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. Now, as they increase their renovation offerings, they are on track to become a member of the London Home Builders’ Association as well. n

tretching across the mezzanine level of a vaulted 20-foot foyer, the 8-by-20-foot stained glass window, blue sky framed by flowers and trees, is a distinctive focal point in an Exeter home. The window, crafted by the late Gord Edwards of London’s Edwards Glass Company, took a year to design and another year to build, says homeowner Noel Veri. It’s indicative of myriad unique and luxury features peppered throughout this custom home, built 40 years ago by the current owner, including exotic silk wallpapers and a grand circular staircase, with hand-carved wood railing and hand-crafted ironwork balusters.

This 9,000-square-foot estate home is listed with Royal LePage Triland Realty sales representative John Crosby for $1.99 million. The home’s main level includes a formal dining room, with seating for 25-plus, and living room with a marble, wood-burning fireplace imported from France, as well as a large office overlooking a front circular drive with a central rock waterfall. Along the rear of the home an expansive games room and two-storey entertainment area, complete with curving cocktail bar, overlooks an indoor spa with a hot tub, sauna and kidney-shaped pool surrounded by a Wiarton ledge rock deck. It features separate outdoor access to both the front and back of the home. The meticulously-landscaped backyard is a natural oasis, with a tiered wood deck and lower stone patio, bordered by a rock garden, waterfall and fish pond, all decorated with potted plants and illuminated, in the evening, by flickering garden lights. Renovation coRRects mistakes of the past

T

en years after a home renovation became “a bit of a disaster,” Danine Pike and her family looked to Arne and Peder Madsen of CCR Building and Remodeling to correct some of the mistakes. The side-split 1960s era house in the Sherwood Forest Mall area had been purchased by a house-flipper, who sold it to the Pikes as a ‘build to suit’ house, despite not being a contractor. “We loved the house but there were some issues with that first renovation,” Pike says, pointing to the flooring and kitchen countertops as examples of inadequate installations. Upstairs, the two bedrooms had been converted into a master suite, with additional bedrooms downstairs. “That was great until we had twins and decided the house was perfect for teenagers but not for a young family,” Pike recalls. “It’s a gorgeous location,” Arne says. The home is situated on a hill overlooking a ravine with a great backyard with lots of trees. However, the shade provided by these trees make the interior seem dark, an effect enhanced by the original small windows.

TOP Janine Pike, one of the homeowners, says the kitchen and dining room are her favourite areas of the home. TOP RIGHT The renovated home was situated on a “gorgeous location” highlighted by many beautiful trees. The renovation took advantage of the view but eliminated the dungeon-like atmosphere caused by the shade. ABOVE Instead of a completely open design, Myra Tuer of Detailing and Design by Myra, suggested placing a divider cabinet between the kitchen and dining room.

TOP Arne and Peder Madsen of CCR Building and Remodeling put a lot of thought into lighting. “It looks quite stunning at night,” Peder says. ABOVE TLC Landscape Design worked on the landscaping, resurfacing the pool area and adding a deck. RIGHT The family is very pleased with the revamped kitchen. Arne Madsen says the family was looking for “a great large kitchen that could become the heart of the home.” OPPOsITE PAGE TOP Approximately three-quarters of the roof was removed, allowing for the installation of high ceilings which

in turn allowed for floor-to-ceiling windows and for skylights to be added for additional light. OPPOsITE PAGE BElOw TLC Landscape Design added a back deck, built around one of the many trees that highlight the backyard.

Arne recalls the Pikes saying “we love the home but it’s so dark we can’t appreciate where we are.” The couple considered moving but other homes viewed also needed renovation. Loving the neighbourhood and the lot, the Pikes decided to “take the plunge” and undertake a second renovation. Any hesitance was brushed aside upon meeting Arne at the annual London Home Builders Parade of Renovations. Touring a home similar to their own, “Arne took the time to show us the renovation that was done and what he felt could be done with our home,” Pike remembers. Approximately three-quarters of the roof was removed, allowing for the installation of high ceilings and large floor-to-ceiling windows. “That just opened up the whole living area,” and brightened up the home, Arne says. Renovations continued with an addition to the west side, a family/rec room and an extra bedroom downstairs, a new two-sided fireplace, high velocity air conditioning and in-floor heating. A new front porch was added

and the garage was enlarged and pulled forward to allow for a mud room, where boots and shoes can be left. The master suite was divided into two bedrooms, separated by “a nice-sized bathroom,” Peder says, noting the parents “can easily access the kids but they also have their own separate area.” A long hallway was eliminated, with skylights added “so that it’s always bright,” Arne adds. TLC Landscape Design “landscaped the whole house front to back,” Peder says. They resurfaced the pool area, added a deck and installed lighting. “We put a lot of thought into lighting,” Peder says. “It looks quite stunning at night.” The family was also looking for a “great large kitchen that could become the heart of the home,” Arne says. “The kitchen really did come together (and) we were able to create a nice dining area.” Work began in February 2015 and was completed by early fall. Pike admits moving out for seven months with young children was not easy. “We had the big picture in mind and that carried us through.” The main floor - especially the kitchen and dining room – are areas that Pike says she loves the most about the house. She credits this to Myra Tuer, of Detailing and Design by Myra, because “we came up with a lot of different layouts. She was wonderful to deal with,” says Pike. While the Pikes loved the idea of an open concept, Tuer believed that, for everyday living, “(an open concept) would be too large,” instead suggesting a divider cabinet between the kitchen and dining room. With the new renovations, Arne says the family can now “see the whole back yard and appreciate the location” and describes the house as now being a “bigger, taller home.” “We have our own personal stamp on the house,” Pike says. “I love the clean lines. I love how much brighter the house is.” n FOR MORE INFORMATION

PURE FUN OVER THE WATER

T

he shores of Lake Huron can produce “true world class con ditions” for kiteboarding, a sport harnessing the wind to propel speciallydesigned boards across the waves. “When there’s a good windy day, we have oceanlike conditions, says Matt Aiken from the kiteboard ing brands WMFG and Mystic. Lake Huron’s shores can’t produce such conditions with the frequency of the ocean but can be every bit as formidable, and sometimes can even rival the ocean in terms of challenges, Aiken says. “It’s quite a short season here,” Aiken says of the Lake Huron kiteboarding season. The real die hards don’t limit themselves to the fair weather months of July and August, instead starting their sea son in midtolate April and perhaps stretch it into early November. “For some people, it’s a little bit like taking on Mother Nature,” Aiken explains.

Kiteboarding began around the turn of the twentyfirst century as a crossover sport from windsurf ing. Nearly all first generation kite boarders in Ontario came from a windsurfing background. “It was going to be something new and interesting and exciting but still had a foot in the windsurfing door,” Aiken says. Another attraction was the ability to transition from novice to accom plished kiteboarder in a short amount of time. Many felt that “every day they went out, they were learning and get ting better at it,” he says. Those pioneers influenced those that followed by making the sport look exciting. Aiken describes kiteboarding as “part surfing, part wake boarding, a bit like windsurfing, and pure fun.”

Wortley Village Fun festivities in Old South

London’s Old South was named Canada’s Best Neighbourhood in 2013 by the Canadian Institute of Planners and for good reason – there’s always something fun happening during the fall and early winter. On October 2 at noon, the third annual Big Bike Giveaway will see hundreds of free bikes given to Londoners. It’s done on a first come/first served basis, with a one-bike limit for each person and you must be present to receive a bike. Though many folks are given bikes, some families in need are referred by the YMCA and Goodwill. Donated bikes are being accepted until September 30 and will be refurbished by volunteers from Pulse Spin Studio, who are the event organizers. Scary, good fun will be part of the sixth annual Halloween in the Village on October 29 from 1 to 8 p.m., which will include a carnival and lighting of the pumpkins. One of the yearly highlights is the

ome vehicle enthusiasts have a passion for machines with two wheels; others have love affairs with four-wheel varieties, but it’s rare to find someone who embraces three-wheelers. Ken Johnson is one of those rarities. Johnson’s heart went all aflutter more than three decades ago when he first saw a brochure for a little Italiandesigned three-wheel van, the Piaggio Ape. That flicker of passion simmered until 2000, when Johnson found a Piaggio P501 van that had been gathering dust in a barn after years of neglect in a farmer’s field. He bought the cute little three-wheeler and the romance with “Vespacars” has been blooming ever since. In fact, after spending a year restoring his own Piaggio, he started collecting and restoring Apes for others and now the Bayfield contractor is recognized around the globe as a prime resource for anyone wanting information, requiring parts or needing help restoring and maintaining a Piaggio. Aficionados everywhere know if they have a question about their Ape, “Ken from Canada” is who you call. “Manuals on my website (www. kjjohnson.ca) are provided for free

The Bayfield contractor is recognized around the globe as a prime resource for anyone wanting information, requiring parts or needing help restoring and maintaining a Piaggio. download and there are restoration files that can be used by anyone to see and understand the process,” says Johnson.

These mini-size haulers are still available as new vehicles – Johnson says a factory in India builds 1,000 Apes a day. The problem for Canadian Ape lovers is that these three-wheelers can’t be imported because they don’t meet federal regulations. So Johnson is filling the gap; rebuilding, restoring and/or customizing existing Apes shipped to his Bayfield shop from clients throughout Canada and the U.S. He’s accumulated an impressive inventory of bits and pieces to help bring new life to old machines or restore them to pristine showroom quality, depending on the customer’s preferences. Typically, a restoration will cost $20,000 to $25,000, but he has also built specialty models for clients, such as a P601 that was fitted out as a mobile coffee wagon. Another – a pickup iteration – has been given a custom paint job, including scorching flames on the cab. Johnson’s passion for Vespacars just keeps getting hotter. n FOR MORE INFORMATION

New models are ready to hit the road

40 Lifestyle September/October 2016

As

they take the wraps off their 2017 offerings, automakers are responding to the shift in consumers’ preferences, from sedans and hatchbacks to sport utility vehicles and crossovers. The SUV/crossover market is flourishing. Whether it’s the compact, mid-size or full-size segment, sales are booming and the new models are tempting buyers, not just with impressive styling and well-designed interiors but all the latest connectivity, infotainment, safety and driver-assistance technologies. This buyers’ trend is also impacting another segment – the minivan. Often despised by some consumers, it’s morphing into a more SUV-type vehicle as automakers try to broaden the vehicle’s appeal. The pure comfort and luxury of a premium sedan still remains an aspiration for many buyers. These cars, which are offered in a range of sizes, deliver the ultimate driving experience, combining luxury, comfort and outstanding vehicle dynamics in a package that’s difficult to resist. Here’s a sampling of the latest models for you to savour.

new features, styling changes highlight Santa Fe XL makeover

toyota adds hybrid model to RaV4 lineup

For some families, bigger is better and Hyundai has a vehicle that ideally fits those needs – the Santa Fe XL. This seven-passenger SUV, which has been given an extensive makeover for 2017, features three rows of seating, with either the standard sliding second-row bench that has a 40/20/40-split reclining seatback, creating space for seven passengers, or the optional twin captain’s chairs in the second row, which trims the cabin capacity to six persons. Either way, the occupants have plenty of space and are surrounded by comfort and convenience features that are unexpected at this price point and in many cases unavailable in competing models. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, power windows, driver’s seat power lumbar support, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control and YES Essentials seat fabric treatment on all models with cloth seating. This treatment provides soil-resistant, anti-odour, and anti-static properties. Available features include a proximity activated liftgate that automatically opens the rear hatch when the proximity smart key is detected. Also available is a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated rear seats, leather seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and keyless entry with push-button ignition.

The RAV4 is one of the most popular sport utility vehicles in Canada and the second-best-selling product in Toyota’s lineup, but consumers now have even more incentive to consider this compact SUV, thanks to the introduction of a hybrid iteration. Toyota has applied its world renown advanced hybrid technology to the RAV4, creating the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid. It’s the seventh hybrid vehicle in Toyota’s lineup, delivering plenty of space for people and their stuff in a stylish package that features impressive capability and performance while consuming fuel sparingly. The Hybrid model joins a RAV4 lineup that’s been totally refreshed for 2016. Toyota engineers have retuned the suspension to deliver a smoother, quieter ride and added hill-start assist to all eight models in the RAV4 lineup. Designers have upgraded the styling, with a bold, more aggressive face, redesigned the front and rear bumpers, introduced new wheel designs for all trim levels and topped off the roofline with a shark fin-style antenna. Inside, new materials and components give the cabin a more premium feel, while visors with extenders and integrated overhead storage for sunglasses have been added. The RAV4 is available in front-wheeldrive and all-wheel-drive models. Numerous technologies are included, such as electric power steering, vehicle stability control and traction control.

stylish Pacifica designed to dominate premium minivan segment

Critics heap praise on all-new Volvo XC90

Makeover gives popular MDX new look, more premium content

The all-new Chrysler Pacifica is designed to rewrite everything you’ve ever known about minivans. Chrysler invented the minivan with its Dodge Caravan in 1984 and its people movers have dominated the segment, but some challengers have been emerging in the upscale portion of the category that threaten to grab sizable chunks of that market. So the Pacifica is being launched to take a bite out of the premium minivan sales being enjoyed by competitors such as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. Chrysler has loaded the Pacifica with all the connectivity, power outlets, cupholders, storage bins and other clever features that make these family haulers so popular. In fact, Chrysler says there are more than 100 standard and available features, including optional foot-operated power sliding doors, heated second-row seats, 10-inch touchscreens mounted on the front seatbacks, a surround-view camera, forward collision alert and adaptive cruise control. The popular Stow ’n Go seats are standard, but there are also new items to attract buyers, such as a built-in vacuum cleaner that’s available in the premium Limited model. The Pacifica is offered with a single powertrain – a 3.6-litre V6 coupled to a nine-speed automatic transmission – but Chrysler says a hybrid version that can run about 50 kilometres in electric mode, is in the works.

The accolades earned this year by the Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle are overwhelming, topped by its selection as the North American Truck of the Year. The 53 voting journalists were impressed by several aspects of the XC90, especially the value this sevenpassenger luxury SUV offers consumers – impressive premium features, Swedish elegance that’s typically understated, plus all the practicality and functionality of a full-size SUV. The XC90 sets a new benchmark for comfort and innovation in its segment, while delivering all the safety technologies, impressive handling and great performance that’s been a standard in Volvo products for decades. The 2016 Volvo XC90, which is built on an all-new platform, has sophisticated styling that looks great, yet still retains the high level of functionality SUV owners expect. Inside, the clean lines of Swedish design are apparent, while the seats and trim reflect the premium materials and craftsmanship one associates with this brand. Large windows add to the interior’s airy openness, yet the cabin is quiet regardless of the road surfaces. Two powertrains are offered for the XC90 – the base T6 model is powered by a 2.0-litre, supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder, while the T8 PHEV integrates an electric motor and battery pack into the powertrain that boosts the power output by 80 horsepower. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.

Acura’s popular three-row luxury sport utility vehicle, the MDX, has a fresh new look for 2017. The exterior features bold new styling, the wheel and tire options have been upgraded and there’s an expanded complement of premium features and technologies, including the AcuraWatch suite of safety and driver-assist technologies. The refreshed exterior of this sevenpassenger SUV is highlighted by a distinctive diamond pentagon grille – the new face of Acura. The hood is now more sculpted, while the front fascia, front fenders and Jewel Eye headlights have been revised. Additional styling updates include new chrome rocker panel trim, a revised rear bumper and skid garnish, plus brightly finished dual exhaust tips. Additional luxury and technology features have been added to all 2017 MDX models, including an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold, automatic high beam headlights, four 2.5-amp USB charging ports and a capless fuel filler. All Elite trim models add LED fog lights, genuine wood interior trim and a surround-view camera system. A six-passenger MDX Elite model, with two second-row captain’s chairs replacing the bench seat, will be available later in the year. Also joining the MDX lineup later this year will be the Sport Hybrid all-wheel drive model. It will utilize Acura’s Super Handling all-wheel drive system, a revolutionary threemotor hybrid powertrain with electric torque vectoring.

➣ 2017 Audi A4 All-new Audi A4 boasts more power, efficiency and intelligence Audi’s all-new A4 sedan, now available at Audi London, sets a new benchmark for luxury sedans. The exterior design is more an evolution than a dramatic makeover, with subtle changes, such as a new headlight assembly with more dramatic look, a refined version of Audi’s signature trapezoid grille. They have relocated the exterior mirrors from the A-pillar/window to the upper door panel. Xenon-plus headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights are standard. Audi is a master of interior design, and the new A4 continues that tradition. Leather seating surfaces are standard, and so is a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The supportive front seats are heated and power adjustable; the driver’s seat includes a power adjustable lumbar support. A glass sunroof and heat-insulating windshield are standard, as are three-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry and push-button start. Infotainment features include Audi’s smartphone interface, Bluetooth and Audi sound system with SiriusXM satellite radio. It’s a word often used around Western Fair District these days. Lumsden is the district’s director of shows and events and he says edu-tainment is the buzzword for their strategic plan.

The fall show will allow people to see the latest products available for the home, spend face-to-face time with experts and also help homeowners decide if a project they may be considering is a do-it-yourself or one best left to the pros. "It's educational entertainment. Here at WFD we're always looking to expand our current lineup. We're always looking to what's the next big thing that we're going to get into." Well the latest addition to their offerings is the DĂŠcor and Reno Show at the end of October. Announced last April, it is part of the Southwestern Ontario Home Show Series, which also includes the Home and Outdoor Show in April. Western Fair is keeping the spring home show, which was run privately there and known as the London Spring Home and Garden Show, and will now put its mark on it. "We call them sister shows. We want them to have their own distinguishing features. The fall show is really an eye to the inside of your home and in April, people are itching to get to work on the outdoor areas of their properties," Lumsden says. He explains that the fall show will allow people to see the latest products available for the home, spend face-toface time with experts and also help homeowners decide if a project they may be considering is a do-it-yourself or one best left to the pros. As people look to the winter months, many people like to cure their cabin fever by taking a look at their home and getting to work in there. It’s a great opportunity for people to research. Along with the experts presenting educational seminars and offering tips, Lumsden says there will be on-site building challenges for consumers, as well as creative tests. "We envision the public coming in and getting their hands dirty." He stresses that WFD isn't competing with the January Lifestyle Home Show, run by the London Home Builders' Association, but rather putting a spin on a classic type of show and filling a need. "The London Home Builders has had a long and great relationship with us at Western Fair and we look forward to that relationship continuing. Design and build challenges will make Western Fair's show different from the LHBA's event. Staff research also showed a clear demand for a fall show. They looked at other markets that offer autumn home shows before embarking on the series path. "There seemed to be a little bit of a void there. As people look to the winter months, many people like to cure their cabin fever by taking a look at their home and getting to work in there. It's a great opportunity for people to research," Lumsden says. "We thought the décor and reno was a natural fit in terms of a name and what the presentation of that show was going to be. We're not afraid to try something new and see what we can put out there. We're always looking to expand our horizons." n

is evident and conversely, there are also plenty of vibrantly mixed floral, graphic, checked and animal prints. Soft and neutral hues of oyster, blush, black, and dark brown dominate the seasonal palette. These hues are lifted by brighter shades of raspberry, royal, yellow, violet and hunter green. Luxurious materials, trims and textures - including fur, fringe and laser cut details, along with renewed interest in sleeve volume and detailing add polish to seasonal essentials, which include dresses, knits and vests.

Emerging treatment for aging skin By Heather Toskan

W

hy not face up to fall by treating yourself to one of the most effective new antiaging treatments? Cosmetic surgery and medical injectable procedures administered by medical health practitioners remain popular and effective, but you may be happy to learn that there are new anti-aging treatments offering promising benefits with minimal downtime which may be as close as your local spa. “Fall is an ideal time to turn back the clock with the latest rejuvenating spa treatments that can smooth out surface skin irregularities, tighten skin and help correct free radical skin damage and related issues, including dark sun spots that become more visible with age and sun exposure,” says Charlene Jones, an aesthetician and the co-owner of Artistic Spa. According to Jones, a patented three-in-one system called Venus

Viva, which is performed by specially trained aestheticians and laser technicians, is one of the most potent and exciting recently launched anti-aging treatments. According to medical aesthetician and laser technician Jessica Campbell, who performs various skin care treatments at Artistic Esthetic Spa in London, there are multiple advantages to Venus Viva anti-aging treatments. “It’s non-surgical, comfortable and effective, with minimal downtime and is safe for virtually all skin types to improve skin texture and tone by reducing the appearance of common concerns, including enlarged pores, scarring, fine lines and rosacea,” says Campbell. According to Campbell, Venus Viva tightens the look of the skin and stimulates new collagen synthesis and fibroblast growth in the dermis, stimulating the skin to naturally and gradually fill in fine lines and other areas of uneven texture for two to three months following each treatment. “The Venus Viva three-in-one system is customized to each individual client’s needs and combines

Depending on the extent of the area(s) treated, the entire process generally takes less than an hour and uses a special micro-needling hand held device which slightly damages skin cells, causing them to heal themselves by stimulating new collagen growth. “Following a Venus Viva treatment, I infuse the treated skin with a non-embryonic stem cell solution to aid the skin in healing and reversing signs of aging,” says Campbell. Domus Developments NORTH POINT LOFTS London’s first modern loft condo community is a hit. North Point Lofts, built by Domus Developments at 1705 Fiddlehead Place in the heart of the city’s northern Masonville district, has sold more than 65 per cent of its 51 boutique condo residences. Spacious two- and three-bedroom open concept suites, ranging from 1,100 to 2,000 square feet, in this four-storey building offer an airy ambiance, enhanced by soaring 10- and 12-foot ceilings. Full-height windows and expansive outdoor living spaces – oversize balconies, including corner wraparounds, and ground-level fenced courtyards – offer bird’s eye views of the surrounding countryside. Standard interior finishes include granite counters plus engineered hardwood and ceramic tile flooring. Energy efficiency is a priority from the window glass to individual air handlers for heat and air conditioning in each unit. Gas service is available for stoves, fireplaces and for outdoor barbecues. Amenities - from shopping to cinema to casual or fine dining – are at the North Point doorstep, notes project developer Mike Mescia. A pathway through a landscaped forest garden, developed as part of the project, leads directly into Masonville. As well, medical facilities at University Hospital, along with Western University and a number of premier golf courses are just a short drive away.

doug tarry homes orchard park The design team at Doug Tarry Homes has flexed its creative muscles and come up with two new floor plans for bungalows in St. Thomas’s Orchard Park neighbourhood. “It’s something new for us and fun for the customer,” says Doug Tarry, marketing director and lead designer. Both would suit empty nesters but would also be ideal family homes, he says. “As we’re finding more customers developing basement space as bedrooms, especially those with older teenagers, this is really ideal one-floor living,” he adds. The Sapphire features an open concept, with a central great room overlooking a rear covered porch, and a separate wing, with master and guest bedrooms, along one side. The Dunmoor offers three bedrooms, one overlooking the front covered porch. It showcases the upgraded finished lower level, with a recreation room, hobby room, and games/media room. Both include two-car garages, main floor laundries, and generous kitchens with the company’s signature walk-in pantry. Exterior features include a stone skirt and James Hardie horizontal plank siding, designed in the Craftsman style but with some Victorian detail, Tarry says. They are also high-performance homes, he says noting the company is becoming recognized for innovation and pushing the envelope, particularly with energy efficiency.

GRAYSTONE HOMES The eighT aT Warbler The concept that good things come in small packages may well apply to a new condominium neighbourhood planned for Southwest London. The Eight at Warbler, a boutique condominium community that will include just eight custom homes, is being developed by Graystone Homes in Riverbend’s Warbler Woods, southeast of Oxford Street and Westdel Bourne. The homes will be one-floor, with the option of a loft, and a minimum 2,000 square feet. Each will be upscale and custom designed, with uniformity only in the exterior colours and materials - stone, stucco brick and shingles, says Graystone president Derek Anderson. They will be priced from the mid-$600s. A premier feature of the community, Anderson says, is the location, with five of the lots backing onto a wooded, environmentally-sensitive area that will never be developed. “That’s very attractive and what discerning purchasers are looking for in what is most likely their last home purchase,” he says. As vacant land condominiums, the purchasers will own the home and assume title of the lot but will enjoy maintenance-free living, with monthly condo fees covering such outdoor tasks as grass-cutting, snow removal and irrigation. Graystone is currently taking lot reservations while they work with potential clients on the designs. Occupancy is expected by spring of 2017.

A new condominium community of one-floor homes is under construction in North London’s Upper Richmond Village. The Legacy of Upper Richmond Village is a collection of 31 detached homes, ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 square feet, being developed by Graystone Homes. These are vacant land condominiums, notes Graystone president Derek Anderson. The residents own the house and land but their condo fees cover outdoor maintenance, including grass cutting, irrigation and snow plowing. “It is the best of both worlds for the empty nester/retiree client,” Anderson says. “It gives them the opportunity to not give up individual home living while having the flexibility to travel, to be away for a month at a time and know things are looked after.” The Legacy offers four home plans, all featuring an open-concept kitchendinette and great room, master suite with generous walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom, a second bedroom/den, main floor laundry, covered front and rear porches and two-car garage. Graystone will also customize plans specifically for the client. A model home will be available for viewing October 1. Surrounded by natural areas, with parks and walking paths and a planned commercial core, Upper Richmond Village is also just minutes from myriad shopping, dining and entertainment amenities in Masonville.

Bringing home visions to life

B

ringing a dream home vision to life is what Jakenzi Design & Build offers with their custom built homes and renovations. Unmistakably, it is the company’s approach that is their key to success. They get to know their clients, their lifestyle and their needs. They listen to the list of desires and work tirelessly to create a unique end result that is beyond expectation. Bob Molinari, president and builder, works pain stakingly for perfection. “The work is individualized for the client as opposed to a con ventional design” he notes. “We do our best to make each project a functional and inviting standout. Something that the homeowner will be proud of for years to come.” Jakenzi’s designs are endless, allowing clients to set the tone, from traditional to modern and everything in between. Creative use of a variety of materials; exotic wood, exposed brick, steel, or natural stone options like quartzite contribute to that one of a kind feel. Feature walls accented with LED lighting show case textures and add depth to any living space. Bob maintains that these accents “can provide an old world charm to even the most modern spaces.” “We’re open to using many different products, and in unique ways,” he says, noting this includes recycled brick, barn board, cement, and galvanized steel or copper in a kitchen island, as opposed to the more traditional quartz or granite. “Smart homes” are definitely on the rise, with smart phones allowing homeowners to monitor heating/cooling, lighting, locks, and cameras all via their mobile device. Clients wishing to create a greener space, can trust that the company uses products to support their choices. Jakenzi is pro gressive, utilizing the best and most innovative products. There is a growing market for renovations, Bob believes. With building lots at a premium and a costly investment, many people are tending to utilize the spaces they already have or purchasing resale properties with the goal of giving them a fantastic update. The Jakenzi vision is innovative, focusing on a layout that combines large, open concept and shared spaces with creative divisions, without a “boxed in” feel. While Jakenzi will take on any project, regardless of size, Bob enjoys the challenge of renovating a whole house. Erica Molinari, design consultant, states that he has an eye for seeing the potential in any space. “He can actually see beyond the existing walls,” she says. “He sees the vision and says ‘this is possible’!”

ust as autumn brings an explosion of colour to Southwestern Ontario, so does it usher in a new season of programming for many local arts groups and organizations. Doors Open London and Culture Days return October 1 and 2 at various London locations. Doors Open London is administered by the London Heritage Council, whereas Culture Days is administered by the London Arts Council. The two joined these programs to help maximize public participation. The free event features over 100 arts and heritage activities across 40 sites throughout London. Ryan Hunt, marketing and digital strategies specialist for both councils, touts three new experiences

that have been added this year. The first is a tour of the London Normal School. Located at 165 Elmwood Avenue East in Wortley Village, the school is an excellent example of High Victorian public architecture. The second is a tour of the Westminster Ponds/Pond Mills Environmentally Significant Area (ESA) whose 200 hectare size and variety of natural habitants make it a jewel in London’s urban crown. Dhira Ghosh, events coordinator for the arts and heritage councils, says the tour is designed to “bring attention to London’s natural heritages.” Events will include tree identification, guided hikes, and a discussion of future changes to Westminster Ponds.

The self-guided mini-tour includes the London Clay Art Centre, 664 Dundas Street, and Metal in Fusion, 630 ½ Lorne Avenue Seven Tour artists will be present at each location along

with a selection of their work. Artist discussions on process will run throughout the weekend. Lest you think that Culture Days is only in London, be aware it is also a signature event on the Elgin Arts Trail where members invite the public to “create, participate and share.” The Trail is a year-round experience, but it really

ramps up for Culture days when its members offer three days, they start September 30, of interactive events and workshops. Don’t miss this once-ayear behind-the-scenes peek at the working places and spaces of local artists, creators, historians, architects, and others. This is a fun event for the whole family. n

Labour of Love RenovatoR cReates his own dReam home By Jay Menard ToP A plethora of Shaker-style cabinets, in a soft oyster tone, provide ample storage in the kitchen. They are complemented by the slightly darker hues of the quartz countertop and subway tile backsplash. All come together to provide a clean, homey place to enjoy good food and good friends. above righT Gilvesy gave the home’s exterior a complete face lift, with new windows that are in line with the age of the home with muntin bars, new doors, new cedar siding, a metal roof and a new garage door. The landscaping was also completely overhauled and updated.

rant Gilvesy has spent many years transforming other people’s houses into homes. But a recent project by the owner of Grant Gilvesy Designs and In Bloom Designscapes allowed him to put his skills and talents to personal use. “I actually bought this home to do for myself,” he said. “I did it with the intent that I’d be staying here – I wanted to make this my dream home. The bulk of the work was done in about eight months. But the finishing touches – the decorating – took about three years in total.” The home, a 1,700-square foot Cape Cod-style, is situated on a double lot in the Old North section of London. Everything was stripped

back and redone, but as the house is situated in London’s oldest neighbourhood, Gilvesy wanted to ensure that it retained the flavour of the area, whilst hearkening back to its original style. “I kept everything period appropriate,” he said. “I wouldn’t say the home is traditional but I kept the period in mind with the renovations and design.” Gilvesy said the project came to him, rather than searching it out. “I had done renovations previously on the street – an Ontario cottage,” he said. “The owner of this home contacted (me). He had walked by the cottage and saw the work I did. The home had been in his family for two or three generations and he wanted the next person to own his

TOP LEFT The living room’s big bay window was preserved and softened with striped silk and velvet curtains. These highlight the room’s eclectic look that combines the traditional feel of an antique Persian carpet and sofas that echo the clean lines of

midcentury modern furniture. “I like to mix things and don’t want it to look like a showroom,” explains Gilvesy. TOP RIGHT The dining space’s deep tones of royal blue were inspired by one of Gilvesy’s vases, but the curtains define the room’s character. They

are made from fabric imported from Pierre Frey Fabric House in Paris, France. LEFT The master bedroom’s walls are a soothing aubergine and two window seats lend it an air of days gone by.

MIDDLE The upstairs bathroom serves all three bedrooms and so must be neither masculine nor feminine, according to Gilvesy, so he chose this gender-neutral wall paper and neutral tones of grey and putty for the room’s finishings.

RIGHT This guest room offers a bright yet relaxed ambiance, with French toile fabrics used in the bedspread and window seat covering.

home to do right by it.” The home was in bad need of restoration, Gilvesy said, though he didn’t change anything architecturally except for returning the front door size to its initial dimensions. “Basically everything had to be done,” he said. “The stonework on the front was the only thing I left.” Gilvesy explained that as this was a labour of love – and a potential long-term home for him – he was freed from traditional concerns about budget. Plus, having two companies that specialize in this type of work allowed him to create a cohesive design, inside and out. “For me, it was kind of a dream home. I wanted everything done 100 per cent.” However, he said for anyone interested in buying an older home and restoring it to its former glory, it’s not something that people should jump into without considering the potential ramifications. “I think the biggest challenge is that you’re working with something old,” he said. “There are so many elements that come into play when you want to restore to the original state – and the biggest is the budget.” Though described as a dream home, the fact is that dreams change. And Gilvesy admitted that his mind may already be wandering. “Would I sell it? Well everything has a price if it’s large enough,” he added, laughing. “I’m getting the itch to move onto the next project.” n FOR MORE INFORMATION

No tend to trend MelBarr Design Build designs for the future By Jay Menard

F

or James Melnick, one of the owners of MelBarr Design Build, redesign is all about looking to the future – a livable future that his customers are going to be happy with. And he’s willing to get to the heart of the matter even if that means a potential client goes elsewhere. “Ninety per cent of the people, maybe more, they’re staying where they live and they want to invest in their home,” Melnick says. “I like to design with the person with an eye to the future.” Melnick says that he often finds that people start out wanting something that is trendy or funky, but after discussions – and the realization that styles

and trends change – customers usually come around to something that is a little more timeless. In the end, Melnick wants to ensure his clients are happy today, tomorrow and in the future. “I’m honest to the point of where I risk losing the job,” he says… “[A trendy design] may not be what someone is going to want in five years.” While some designers start by asking clients to show examples of what they like, Melnick takes the opposite approach. “It seems like a weird thing to do with a client, but the first thing I ask is what you don’t like about your house,” he says. “My design philosophy is that ev-

ery design starts with the identification of a problem. If there wasn’t a problem you wouldn’t want to change it.” Doing that can lead to realistic ideas to improve the living environment. “What someone likes doesn’t necessarily translate into what can be done in a living environment,” he added. “Our motto is design for living; build for life.” b
