“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” – ALBERT CAMUS

R

enewal, rejuvenation, rebirth, renovation – autumn is a time to sit back after summer’s flurry of travel and beach trips, soccer and baseball tournaments, patio parties and barbecues. During cooler days and nights chilly enough for a sweater, we can pause and reflect on what new goals we will set for this time of renewal as the days grow shorter and the northern hemisphere prepares for a period of snowy hibernation. If personal rejuvenation is on your goal list for the fall, taking a look at the makeup and skin care products you currently use should be on the agenda. On page 65 is advice from three experts who offer tips and tricks for turning back time. As spring and summer’s hot housing market continues into fall, house hunters will want to check out pages 49 to 55 to see Ellen Ashton-Haiste’s story on the latest and greatest offerings from area builders. Feathering the nest to be a cozy and warm place to hibernate this winter makes renovation one of autumn’s key activities. The London Home Builders’ Association presents its annual Parade of Renovations to ‘try before you buy’

and see the work of several renovators at one go. Talk to the pros and help a great cause at the same time on October 2. Details on page 21. If your closet is feeling summer’s drought, rebirth your fashion sense with the vibrant colours, textures and designs on offer at local retailers this fall. Heather Toskan shows you how to inject some energy back into your look on page 59. AJAC (Automotive Journalists of Canada) writer Clare Dear reviews all that’s shiny and sleek on the road to make your autumn leaf-peeking driving tour a much more rewarding experience. See page 33 for details. The Lifestyle Magazine crew wishes you a reflective season of renewal, rejuvenation, rebirth and renovation as you enjoy reading the September/ October issue.

hinking of making changes to your home? The date to mark on the calendar is October 1. That’s when the London Home Builders’ Association and its Renovators’ Council will be hosting the annual Parade of Renovations.

The day is a win/win for local contractors and consumers, says 2017 Council chairman Paul Guenette, owner of Certa Pro Painters. “Our renovators love doing it,” he says. “It’s a great opportunity to show off projects they’re so proud of. The transformation of the properties is remarkable.” And for consumers, he adds, it’s a chance to see the latest trends. “People tell us that they walk away with great ideas on what they can do to their homes.” Renovators’ Council vice-chair John Relouw, a partner at Duo Building, says he’s found most people touring the Parade are considering or planning renovations to their own homes. “They’re making an effort to come out and see what’s going on in the industry, who’s doing what and the kind of work the various contractors do.” Homes on the Parade will be open for viewing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $10 pass to all view all the renovated homes is available at any one of them. 

It shouldn’t be this hard!

The main floor of this west London home was transformed by CCR Building and Remodeling. The main living area was opened up to provide an unimpeded view of the back yard, with its covered floating porch, through new oversize windows. The master bedroom also got a facelift, enlarged to include a bright walk-in closet and spa-like ensuite bathroom.

• 45 Hampton crescent EASIER ACCESS

This older west London ranch, with low ceilings and small windows, was badly in need of brightening. CCR Building and Remodeling opened up the interior, raising the roof height to allow larger windows. A rear deck, overlooking the Thames River, was also enlarged. Extensive use of skylights including in the entranceway, kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom enhance the natural light. The lower level, with a walkout, was upgraded with a family room, new laundry, larger windows and patio doors.

By Kathy Mueller

I have more confidence,” says Jessica Bell, 25, who recently completed the inaugural Women in Carpentry program at Fanshawe College, which aims to create a female-friendly learning environment for women with a passion for construction. “I was very timid at the beginning,” says Bell, “but this course has helped change that.” A new concept provincially, the program is being watched closely by other colleges. With less than a handful of students attending its first year, the program was not cost-effective, but professor Steven Gedies notes 17 students are enrolled for the current school year. The program offers up to 70 per cent hands-on learning and is interspersed with guest speakers from the London Home Builders’ Association, as well as site visits and co-op placements, and provides a foundation for Fanshawe’s Residential Construction and Renovation programs. “We want to remove real or perceived barriers young women might have about working in the construction industry,” says Gedies. Also keeping a close eye on the program’s rollout is Jeff Murrell, associate dean School of Trades, Niagara College and chair of Heads of Apprentice Training Ontario. With the Ontario Chamber of Commerce predicting a 40 per cent growth in the trades industry, Murrell says there will be a need to “change the face of these jobs.” There is a bit of panic in the industry,” says Murrell as older male tradespeople retire. With a potential impending shortage of workers, “Women will be more employable because of their gender. Women have a finer eye for detail. Female customers want to engage with female tradespeople,” he adds. Both Gedies and Bell stress the need to shift the focus of the all-female learning environment away from gender and onto learning styles. “With young men, there’s a competitive angle. They immediately challenge each other, and I need to rein them in; encourage them to think first,” explains Gedies. “With women, there is instant collaboration and I actually need to encourage them to take chances and trust their instincts.” Gedies admits he is adjusting his lesson plan and teaching style to ensure both foster the collaborative approach he sees the women taking when working on projects. Bell, who is entering her second year, has advice for young women who might be contemplating a career in the trades. “Try anything. Talk to people. Find a mentor. This course will leave you feeling competent to be able to tackle anything.” n

njoying delicious foods is one of life’s great joys, but when one of the tastiest is also one of the most nutritionally beneficial it’s a truly superlative foodie experience. A pure, unprocessed food derived from one source after no treatment is as close to perfect as one can get. According to Sandra Venneri, nutritionist and owner of Nutrition Bites, whole foods – those that haven’t been processed – offer both macro and micro nutrients, and, therefore, offer the most health-giving properties. Eating a diet that is mainly comprised of foods in their raw or natural state is best, she adds. Jamie Griffiths, owner of The Pristine Olive, quotes a study by the University of California, Davis Olive Center: “‘Sixty-nine per cent of imported olive oils labelled as extra virgin failed the IOC sensory standard.’ In other words, most imported extra virgin olive oils were not extra virgin at all.’” So sourcing your olive oils for eating and cooking from a reliable source – such as The Pristine Olive or Olive Your Favourites in Stratford – is essential to being assured that it is genuine, 100 per cent EVOO. “Think of your olive oil as freshly-squeezed juice, which always has the most nutritional benefits,” he illustrates. The above mentioned stores offer oils obtained seasonally, which are changed at least every six to eight months following each harvest. Those imported from olive regions in the northern hemisphere – Greece, Italy, Spain, California, Tunisia – are picked and crushed in the fall, arriving in stores here in November and December. EVOO from oil-producing countries in the southern hemisphere – Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru,

Argentina and South Africa – are picked in their fall (our spring) and make appearances at Ontario stores in early to midsummer. When purchasing olive oil ask about the crush date,” says Michelle Hern of Olive Your Favourites. Knowing that the olive oil you’re purchasing is fresh and at its peak nutritional value is important. EVOO is higher in oleic acid than other vegetable fats, making it a superior antioxidant. It also has a high polyphenol count. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory, explains Hern. Griffiths adds that some of his customers purchase the “most robust oil and take a tablespoon every morning to help their arthritis. They find it very beneficial in reducing inflammation.” But the main reason that both Hern and Griffiths, as well as millions of others, love EVOO is the taste. “We have so many customers who try it when they are travelling in Europe and then just can’t go back to eating store bought (EVOO). They become ‘olive oil snobs’ because of the freshness and taste,” Hern chuckles. Olive Your Favourites and The Pristine Olive carry dozens of types of EVOO, some infused with pure fruits and herbs, as well as dark and white balsamic vinegars. The latter are also pure products and made from grapes in Modena, Italy. White and dark balsamic vinegars are mixed and infused with herbs and natural fruit flavours, as well. Purchasing EVOO and balsamic at a specialty shop usually allows you to buy the amount you will use in a shorter amount of time, continuing to respect the integrity of the product, as it’s dispensed in 200-, 375and 750-millimetre bottles. “You wouldn’t buy a bottle of freshly squeezed fruit juice and leave it in the refrigerator for months,” says Griffiths, so purchase smaller amounts more frequently so that your olive oils and balsamic vinegars are always at the peak of freshness. As Venneri says, “Whole foods – those with one ingredient – are a whole lot healthier.” n

YO U CRAZ Y Automakers continue to improve the fuel efficiency and performance of their products, but they’re also upgrading the content and technologies in their vehicles across the board, creating more value for their customers. While premium vehicles remain the pace-setters in technological advancements, features that once were exclusive to high-end products are now filtering down to even entry-level vehicles, especially in such areas as infotainment features, connectivity and advanced safety technologies. For example, consumers no longer have to look at pricey models to get such safety features as blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision alert and even adaptive cruise control systems that automatically alter the vehicle’s speed to match the pace of traffic ahead. Regardless of your car-buying budget, there’s plenty of choice in today’s marketplace. Here’s a sampling of the latest offerings. By Clare Dear

New styling enhances TLX’s sporty character

Cadillac XT5 a solid contender in mid-size luxury CUV market

 Acura has given its TLX a sporty new look as part of the midsize performance luxury sedan’s 2018 makeover. The TLX, which is the first Acura sedan to take design cues from the Acura Precision Concept, features an alluring new style, highlighted by a diamond pentagon grille and more sharply sculpted hood and front fenders, combined with a more aggressive front and rear fascia and side sills. Acura’s signature five-lamp Jewel Eye LED headlights and new alloy wheel designs complete the TLX’s new look. The return of dual exposed exhaust tips are a Canadian exclusive design feature. The TLX is offered in two configurations: front-wheel drive, powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, and a 3.5-litre V6 driving Acura’s Super Handling all-wheel drive system. For performance-oriented buyers, Acura is offering a new A-Spec package for the 2018 TLX. It features exclusive design elements inside and out, along with key enhancements to chassis tuning and wheel/ tire specification. Unique styling touches include a matte-black grille with dark chrome surround and an aggressive lower front fascia with LED fog lights flanking a broad centre air opening. At the rear, there’s a black decklid spoiler, “smoked” LED taillights and an exclusive fascia featuring a lower diffuser. A-Spec upgrades also include 19-inch grey-painted alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Primacy 245/40R19 tires. Inside, A-Spec upgrades include more aggressively bolstered front seats with high-contrast stitching and piping; brushed aluminum-look instrument panel garnish and a thick-rimmed steering wheel.

 Cadillac’s new entry in the highly competitive luxury mid-size crossover segment, the XT5, has been designed from the inside out to provide customers more space, technology, luxury and efficiency. It features bold, refined exterior styling, plus a well-crafted, five-passenger interior that offers plenty of premium features, numerous advanced technologies and impressive overall performance. The roomy cabin is trimmed with quality materials, including wood, aluminum and leather, creating a truly premium feel. In addition to more rear-seat legroom, the second-row bench slides fore and aft 140 mm, while the 40/20/40-split rear seatback reclines. The Cadillac XT5 is available in four trim levels, including the premium Platinum model that offers unique interior and exterior trim and materials plus the latest technology features, including Cadillac’s award-winning, industry-first rear camera mirror system. All-wheel drive is standard on Platinum models and optional on Luxury and Premium Luxury trim levels. Power for the XT5 is supplied by a 3.6-litre V6 engine, which is also used in the ATS and CTS sport sedans and CT6 flagship model. This engine includes variable valve timing for strong response and smooth power delivery while maintaining optimum efficiency regardless of power demand. It also features cylinder deactivation technology, which allows the engine to seamlessly switch to a fuel-saving four-cylinder mode under low or moderate loads, and stop/ start technology, which automatically stops and restarts the engine when the vehicle is at rest in traffic, saving fuel and reducing emissions. The engine is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

 If you’re considering the purchase of a small crossover or sport utility vehicle, Hyundai has an alternative well worth checking out – its all-new 2018 Elantra GT. This compact hatchback has been designed and tuned for the demands of the European market, which means it’s not only practical, but a lot more fun to drive. The new Elantra GT is longer, wider and lower than the 2017 model it replaces, yet its cargo volume has been increased a substantial 54 litres to improve the vehicle’s versatility. It now offers 705 litres of space for stuff – and that’s with the rear seatback upright. Flattened out, the rear cargo area has 1,560 litres of space – comparable with many of the compact CUVs and SUVs on the market. Better yet, that versatility comes in a vehicle that’s not only more fun to drive, but its operating costs will be considerably less. The Elantra GT’s SuperStructure frame is comprised of 53 per cent advanced high-strength steel from Hyundai’s own steel manufacturing facility – that’s double the amount of advanced HSS used in the outgoing model. The added strength and rigidity of the new chassis results in improvements in noise insulation, collision safety and the overall driving experience. Improved ride and handling, combined with 10 per cent more direct steering, enable the driver to enjoy dynamic driving capabilities without compromising ride comfort. The Elantra GT is being offered in two iterations – the Elantra GT and the GT Sport, which includes a 201-horsepower, 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters.

2018 BMW X3

All-new Navigator delivers first-class luxury, comfort

Fresh design, upgraded engines highlight all-new X3 makeover

 Lincoln has given its premium luxury SUV a complete makeover for 2018, upping the level of luxury, creating even more space for its occupants and wrapping them in an ultra-quiet cocoon that seals out noisy intrusions. Lincoln has added sound-deadening laminated glass in the windshield, rear window and side windows. The heating and cooling ducts have been tuned to minimize noise, even the tires have been designed to keep road noise to a minimum. If any exterior sounds still manage to intrude, a noise-cancelling system wipes them out. The increased level of luxury is obvious in the spacious cabin. French-stitched leather covers the seats in all three rows. The driver and front-seat passenger are treated to 30-way power seats with heating and cooling functions. The second row can be ordered with either a three-passenger bench or a pair of captain’s chairs. Either way, the seats tilt and slide, even with a baby seat installed, for easy access to the 60/40-split three-seat third-row bench. The area behind the third row offers 591 litres of cargo capacity. All three rows have two USB ports and one 12-volt port (plus a fourth in the cargo area.) There’s a 110volt outlet in the second row, which also has its own climate controls. Power is supplied by a twin-turbo V6 engine projected to produce 450 horsepower, delivered through a 10-speed transmission. Navigator’s new high-strength aluminum-alloy body has cut the vehicle’s overall weight by nearly 90 kilograms, which has been reinvested in features such as increased towing capacity.

 BMW’s small luxury crossover, the X3, is all new for 2018. This third-generation X3 has a new chassis, the engine lineup has been upgraded and there are new tech features. The wheelbase has been extended 55.88 millimetres, creating more interior room and also making the X3 perfectly balanced with a 50/50 weight distribution. By utilizing the latest weight-saving construction materials and techniques, BMW engineers have reduced the X3’s overall weight, reducing fuel consumption. Wind-cheating exterior touches, such as new underbody sealing, defined rear trailing edges, aerodynamic exterior mirrors and active grille shutters have reduced drag, also enhancing fuel efficiency and performance. The all-new interior includes such features as BMW’s gesture-controlled iDrive infotainment system, a full-colour heads-up display, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, optional heated and cooled seats, longer panoramic sunroof, three-zone automatic climate control and individually adjustable rear seatbacks that split 40/20/40. There’s also a lengthy list of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with automatic braking and adaptive cruise control. Under the hood, there’s a choice of two powertrains. The xDrive30i has a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four that develops 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It replaces the current xDrive28i variant. A new M Performance trim, the M40i, features a turbocharged, 3.0-litre inlinesix that develops 355 hp and 369 lb.-ft. It includes a launch control system that enables the M40i to sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Both engines deliver their output through an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.

2018 gEnEsis g80 sport Genesis steps up its game with new G80 Sport model

 Although Genesis has been competing in the high-end luxury market against wellestablished brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus for less than year, it’s already stepping up its game with the addition of the G80 Sport model for 2018. This new variant to its G80 mid-size luxury sedan lineup is comparable in size to BMW’s 5-Series sedan and features a powerful new 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine plus unique sport performance upgrades. The G80 Sport distinguishes itself from the rest of the G80 lineup with a striking exterior and distinctive copper styling elements. Unique 19-inch wheels, genuine carbon fibre interior trim, Nappa leather sport seats and a smaller-diameter steering wheel are just some of the G80 Sport’s exclusive design features. The Sport’s powertrain is also unique – a 3.3-litre gasoline direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine that cranks out 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The G80 Sport, like all Genesis models sold in Canada, comes with HTRAC all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The Sport lives up to its name, using an upgraded adaptive suspension system to deliver excellent driving dynamics with improved body motion control and agility. The Sport also delivers enhanced stopping power, thanks to larger front and rear brakes. The G80 Sport’s all-inclusive price of $62,000 includes freight and delivery fees, plus a suite of services such as Genesis at Home valet service, complimentary scheduled maintenance, map updates and more, for five years or 100,000 km.

GLC 300 Coupe combines crossover utility with sleek styling

Platinum Edition boosts Cayenne’s level of elegance

 Mercedes-Benz has rounded the edges of the typical crossover’s boxy profile, giving its premium GLC 300 Coupe a more fluid, fastback look. Don’t be misled, though – while Mercedes has applied the ‘coupe’ nomenclature to this vehicle, it still retains the functionality of a CUV, complete with four doors and a power tailgate. Compared to the regular GLC, the sleek roofline of the Coupe has been lowered 38 millimetres, while the overall length of the vehicle has been stretched 76 millimetres to enhance its esthetic appeal. The interior of the GLC Coupe has all the luxury and amenities you’d expect in a premium crossover. Standard equipment includes ARTICO leather upholstery, automatic climate control, power adjustable heated front seats with power lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, split folding rear seats and a sliding glass sunroof. The GLC Coupe is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 273 pounds per foot of torque at just 1,300 revs. It’s paired with a nine-speed G-TRONIC transmission that delivers the output to Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. A fuel-saving ECO start/stop system is standard. This powertrain will launch the Coupe to 100 kilometres per hour in 6.5 seconds. An AMG-tuned model is available, and it steps up the performance level with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V-6 that cranks out 362 horsepower and 384 pounds per foot of torque. The AMG GLC 43 Coupe, which starts at $63,800, takes a mere 4.9 seconds to reach 100 kilometres per hour. An even more potent version, the AMG GLC 63 Coupe is scheduled.

 The 2018 Porsche Cayenne combines the soul of the legendary Porsche sports cars with the practicality and versatility of a five-door utility vehicle. Opting for the Platinum Edition boosts the level of occupant comfort and convenience even further up the scale. The roots of the Cayenne’s spirited performance are linked to its impressive powertrain – a 3.6-litre V6 engine with direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing. It delivers a strong output of 300 horsepower at 6,300 rpm that’s channelled through an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission with automatic start/stop function. The interior of the Cayenne is virtually built to bring the car and driver together. Everything the driver needs is within easy reach, including the newly developed Porsche Communication Management (PCM), with a navigation module, which fits perfectly into the raised centre console. The Cayenne Platinum Edition adds purposefully selected materials in the cabin and unique touches to the exterior to create an even greater sense of style. Inside, for example, the Porsche crest has been embossed on the headrests and eight-way, power-adjustable sport seats with the seat centres in trimmed in Alcantara are standard equipment. On the outside, 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels in satin platinum, accentuated by wheel arch extensions finished in the exterior colour, plus door sill guards with the Platinum Edition logo add to the model’s elegance. Other extended standard features on the Platinum Edition include Bi-Xenon main headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System, automatically dimming mirrors, park assist front and rear and a premium Bose surround sound audio system.

2018 AudI Q5

Next-generation Q5 raises the bar in small premium CUV segment  The second generation of Audi’s Q5 builds on the success of its small premium crossover with a totally new iteration for 2018 that’s better in every aspect. For starters, the wheelbase has been stretched about 38 millimetres and the body itself is about 25 mm longer, opening up space in the cabin for a bit more legroom for rear-seat occupants and 10 more litres of cargo space (610L) with the rear seatback upright. Yet the new Q5 is 50 kilograms lighter than the current model. The impeccable interior quality and design Audi is known for in the industry is maintained in this new Q5, with premium materials, fit and finish throughout. Advanced technologies, too, have been loaded into the new Q5, including Audi’s Virtual Cockpit with a 12.3-inch display screen located in front of the driver that can be adjusted to show a normal instrument panel or give a direct view of the navigation system. The exterior of the 2018 Q5 has a sophisticated new look. New headlights and taillights are linked by a character line that runs the length of the body, while the shift to a clamshell-style hood that blends into the fenders eliminates the distracting hood-opening lines. It all comes together to create a very clean, refined design. The Q5 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. If you’re looking for more excitement, check out the SQ5. It comes with a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0L V6 that cranks out 354 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

Classy, sassy ToronTo Luxe getaways to the Big Smoke for romance-seeking couples or girlfriend groups By Jill Ellis-Worthington

ou’ve seen the Jays play at Rogers Centre; you’ve walked the Danforth for Greek Fest; you’ve even strolled around the Toronto Islands many times. Is the long ride to Toronto on the stress-inducing, overcrowded Highway 401 really worth it? The answer is an unequivocal yes! First, getting there can actually be half the fun when you take the VIA train or drive to Aldershot and catch the GO Train. Just say no to traffic and stress. Next, think luxury or unique when picking your short-term home away from home. The Ritz Carlton is pricey but worth it. From the time you enter the doors and are called by name at check-in to the sumptuous, large rooms with views of the city and lake to the convenience of being neighbours with both Roy Thompson Hall and the Rogers Centre (if you really want to catch a Jays game again) – putting on the Ritz will make a quick getaway feel like a longer vacation when you take a mental and physical break from the usual noisy, kid-filled pool and breakfast bar hotel scenario. Upgrade to the Club Level for a special experience high above the city. The Ritz is foodalicious when you take in dinner at delectable Toca Restaurant or explore the Cheese Cave therein. If you’re after unique, the recently opened Broadview Hotel is the answer. ing hole but was converted to a hotel in 1898. It’s since served as a rooming house and strip establishment, closing in 2014 to be reopened as a boutique hotel this year after extensive structural work, exterior restoration and interior revamp. The Lobby Bar again serves as an area meet-n-drink place and offers food and beverage in a setting highlighted by art made of pieces saved and reimagined from the original structure. For instance, 1800s fire escapes were rescued and now artistically frame the lobby’s elevator access. The rooftop patio offers food and drink served to those enjoying the 360 degree view of the cityscape either in the open air or while protected from the elements in the glass-enclosed pyramid. Each of the 58 rooms offers unique features. For instance, some rooms offer 1800-era arched window frames and others have modern floor-to-ceiling windows or small outdoor areas. Shopping is often on the agenda for a girls’ getaway and getting a new appreciation for the art of the fashion hunt is part of image consultant Suzanne Colmer’s group shopping experiences. Explore and access fashion and jewelry designers’ workshops, little boutiques that you might not otherwise notice or warehouses that store clothes offered online. The latter allows you to see and try-on garments before they hit the internet. All covered by the two-hour tour for groups up to 10 for $75 (doesn’t include purchases).

Meet Colmer, whose business is called Your Shop Girl, at a Queen Street West coffee shop and then learn from this experienced fashion diva. “Even if they don’t buy anything during the tour, my goal is to make sure they can shop smarter afterwards,” says Colmer. With her connections, Colmer is able to get those on her shopping excursions discounts that could equal the amount of the tour fee. Trying new food and drink can be one of the best ways to explore a city. Discovering little out-of-the way bistros, like Café Cancan (sit on the patio and sip a glass of wine after a stroll around the lovely campus of University of Toronto), is one of the perks of exploring a familiar city as a tourist. Going to an unfamiliar restaurant is one way to do it but getting to sample, explore the kitchens and meet the gourmands behind the dishes gives being a ‘foodie’ a new meaning. According to Kevin Durkee, owner of The Culinary Adventure Co., all guides are restaurant-savvy from their years of experience working in the industry and “tell the stories of the neighbourhoods through food.” From the St. Lawrence Market to Chinatown and many hidden gems you’ve never heard of, tour goers get a behind-the-scenes look and taste of Toronto, the country’s largest and foodiest city. When your shopping and eating explorations have rendered you parched, a stop into BarChef will quench that thirst and

“Creating Your Heritage Today ” Try a different taste of Toronto by savouring it in new and exciting ways. Canada’s largest city shimmers along the shores of Lake Ontario and walking along its habourfront – sipping craft brews or enjoying an espresso at a lakeside bistro – sets the tone for a deluxe experience for you and a special someone. Girlfriend getaways can be fun and frivolous or cultured and classy when you explore streets, shops and eateries guided by local experts. FROM FAR LEFT BarChef is a unique culinary experience that reimagines the cocktail genre. • Appreciate The Big Smoke at ground level when exploring by bike with Toronto Bike Tours. • Shoes have shaped history and Bata Shoe Museum tells the tale from humble beginnings to Hollywood glam. • Take your mega city experience over the edge by challenging your fear of heights and gain a new appreciation for life during the CN Tower’s Edge Walk.

challenge what you thought cocktails were all about. Co-owner and bar chef Frankie Solarik leads a team of chefs who create original cocktails and “create an immersive experience that challenges the genre.” Often served in food vessels with some elements eaten instead of drunk to “create new and original flavour profiles,” a visit to BarChef brings a special meaning to the term cocktail hour, as you’ll need more than an hour to explore this extensive menu. Many who live within driving distance of TO have been to the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Ontario Science Centre and the ROM but on this journey of exploration, stop into the Bata Shoe Museum (perfect for your girls’ weekend away) or the Design Exchange or the Agha Khan Museum. If excitement is your thing, try the CN Tower’s Edge Walk or an E-bike tour of downtown with Toronto Bicycle Tours for a true thrill. The city’s waterfront offers a wonderful venue to stroll or get out on the water with Gone Sailing Adventures. So you thought a jaunt to the zoo or game meant you knew Toronto but there’s a whole new classy, sassy side to the Big Smoke and so many aspects to explore that several trips may be required. n FOR MORE INFORMATION www.seetorontonow.com

P

roudly Canadian is a term that’s bandied about freely, especially in a year filled with 150 celebrations, but it’s taken seriously at Blyth Festival. Exhibiting solely Canadian shows almost since its inception in 1975, artistic director Gil Garratt – who has a proud Canadian pedigree of working at The Grand in London, Stratford Festival and the National Arts Centre – recalls that the inaugural season featured one Canadian and one popular nonCanadian show. The former beat the latter by a long shot in ticket sales. With this confirmation that there’s a hunger for Canadian-created plays, 130 of them have trod the boards at Blyth Theatre since. Garratt reports that featuring local and regional stories and talent is the theatre’s raison d’etre. Some of these – like Innocence Lost (the Steven Truscott story) – have gone on to national acclaim. Known as one of the area’s premiere summer stages, this year the season stretches into September with three plays

available for enjoyment. The Pigeon King is a collaborative writing effort by Garratt and a team of 10, who have sifted through court records as part of their research. While most of the script is set, segments of it will be “live and inventive every night,” he says. There’s also a country string band on stage as part of the production. The play is based on the true tale of Arlan Galbraith, a Huron County man who was convicted of bilking $40 million from mostly Mennonite, Amish and Hutterite farmers on both sides of the border in a scheme involving breeding racing pigeons. September‘s other titles include Watching Glory Die presented by the Mulgrave Road Theatre from Nova Scotia, written by Judith Thompson, whom Garratt calls one of Canada’s most successful playwrights. It tells the story of Ashley Smith who died by suicide while in jail in Kitchener. Garratt says the play entitled Ipperwash “had a long incubation period,” that saw its two writers spending time researching the work onsite. He adds that it highlights Camp Ipperwash’s beginnings during the Second World War in 1942 to the present day. Garratt also explains that it’s the first play written by Indigenous playwrights to be staged at Blyth Festival. Garratt is pleased that the festival continues to draw new patrons from the area and as far away a New York State. He promises all new shows for the 2018 season. b

hat’s at the newly rebranded fall home show October 28 and 29 at Western Fair District’s Metroland Media Agriplex. The event debuted last year as the Décor and Reno Show. This year, it’s been improved and relaunched as FLAIR – an acronym for furniture, lifestyle, art, interiors and remodelling. It is, according to Skye Nicholson-Smith of Western Fair District’s media office, a cool new twist on a home show. It’s also distinctive from its Home and Outdoor Show cousin held in April. “FLAIR is focused on décor, lifestyle and interiors and has a more concentrated, curated exhibitor base,” says Nicholson-Smith. “Although both shows fall under the broader umbrella of home shows, FLAIR hones in on niches such as art, lifestyle and furniture. The fall show is a more intimate experience in terms of show scale and interaction with exhibitors.” FLAIR’s focus on home interiors includes showcasing dining and living room furniture, ceramics, textiles and home accessories. “We will also be featuring workshops for attendees to learn from local artisans and décor professionals and walk away with a quality, DIY handmade products,” Nicholson-Smith says. Attendees will be able to get the skinny on emerging style trends. “Part of what sets this show apart from the spring Home and Outdoor Show is the unique, new trends and products that exhibitors will showcase,” she says. “This home décor and lifestyle event is an opportunity for designers, artisans, craftspeople and the home and design industry to put a spotlight on their unique and eye-catching products and services.” It’s not just aimed at the upscale market. FLAIR will also have appeal for those wishing to make the most of smaller spaces, including 20-somethings who might be renting their first apartment or those who have just

moved into their first house and are looking to put their personal stamp on it. “FLAIR will provide décor and home inspiration for all attendees whether they own, rent or are in the market to buy,” Nicholson-Smith says. It’s also pep talk central for do-ityourselfers taking in a workshop. “Much of the show will be focused on adding flair to your home whether that’s through buying a piece from a local artisan for your living room wall, connecting with an exhibitor that can provide you with your dream remodel or a DIY-er who can come to the show for a workshop and walk away with a hand-made home accessory,” she says. Before the doors open to the public, exhibitors will be invited to an industry cocktail party – an opportunity for those in the design industry to make new connections and develop their businesses while enjoying food and drink. The show opens at 11 a.m. both days and closes at 5 p.m. Admission is $12. n

Inside, steps from a sunken foyer lead up to an open-concept living area and kitchen, featuring nine-foot ceilings, engineered hardwood flooring and quartz countertops. Company president Randall Oke believes there is a need for this type of home for young families or empty nesters looking to downsize. “We put in the same quality as in our high-end homes, using different manufacturers in the trades and finishes but still keeping up standards,” he says. Stelobrook Homes People are increasingly discovering an attractive retirement destination in Sarnia, says Rob Longo, real estate broker with Magic Realty, representing Stelobrook Homes. “It’s a different pace of life,” he says. “It’s big enough to have the amenities but not as big as or as fast-paced as London. And the dollar goes a lot further here.” Thus Stelobrook’s two- and three-bedroom bungalows, being built in Sarnia’s Rapids Parkway subdivision, are proving popular. Knot just for knitters SHOP OFFERS CREATIVE OUTLET By Beth Stewart

Walk through the door of this 1842 Heritage Home

You’ll find many of the best and most popular yarns, including several Canadian hand-dyed yarns, lots of great tools, notions, spinning wheels, looms, classes and lots of samples.

LITTLE RED MITTEN

86 Talbot St., St. Thomas, ON 519-207-2880 www.littleredmitten.ca • info@littleredmitten.ca 56 Lifestyle September/October 2017

“Open, airy, well laid out and informative,” is how loyal customer Heather Neveu describes the ambience at Little Red Mitten, which occupies a two-storey repurposed heritage house near the Jumbo statue in St. Thomas. Owner Joan Janes’ incredible array of yarns and notions make good use of the building’s original rooms. Community is a big part of knitting, and one of the rooms does double duty on Wednesday afternoons and Friday evenings when knitters gather to work and chat. “It’s one of the most important things about this place,” Janes says. Upstairs is an office, yarn storage and a classroom. Janes is certified as a Master Knitter with the Knitting Guild Association and has logged in over 1,600 hours of teaching time at Little Red Mitten. Staff member Linda Elkins teaches rigid heddle weaving. Knitting has many mental and physical benefits, and, says Janes, “it is definitely entertaining.” Janes has seen an upsurge in knitting since the late 1990s. She credits the internet with turning a younger generation on to it. Chat rooms and question sharing sites have caused an explosion in knitting knowledge. “Making is cool,” says Janes. “Contemporary knitters are rebelling against ready-made as they long for the fabulous feeling of accomplishment that comes from doing it yourself.” The texture and colour of yarns also gives one an incentive to knit. Janes sees similarities between knitting and pointillism as both employ distinct dots of colour to paint a picture. As to what her motivation is, Joan Janes says: “I wouldn’t be near as happy at a baseball game if I didn’t have my knitting.”

A Family Affair “Like father, like daughter” takes on a slightly different connotation with Rob Veel and his daughter, Jennifer Meersseman. If you like the work that one does, you’ll also admire the other’s talents.

In 2004, Jen was “totally stressed out” at the job she was doing. Rob was looking for someone to assist him with fabrication and installations for various aspects of his glass business, and Jen embraced the opportunity. “I learned everything,” Jen says. “I taught her what I know and she’s done very well and is more than capable,” Rob agrees. Today, both run their own businesses, installing glass and aluminum railings around decks, porches, stairways and pools, as well as glass shower doors and enclosures. Rob has operated Westminster Glass since 1986, now working from his Thorndale home. Jen launched her Glencoe-based Southwest Railing and Glass Shower Enclosure in 2015. In the beginning, there was more commercial work but, today, father and daughter are focused on residential and smaller jobs.

Southwest Railing & Glass Shower Enclosures

Both are virtually one-person operations although when an extra hand is needed, they share go-to-guy, James. “When clients are dealing with Westminster Glass, they’re not going to get a crew show up to do the installation. It’s going to be me,” Rob says. “Because I’m hands-on, I can see what’s possible and what isn’t, the full spectrum of what you can do.” And, says Jen, “at the end of the day, you see that you’ve enhanced something, that you’ve made something look great. There’s a lot of pride in that.” There’s also pride in doing custom work, that gives clients something different, often a bit more “out of the box,” Rob says. “Custom doesn’t mean expensive,” he says. “It just means made to measure. We measure up what you have and suit every-

thing according to those measurements. Whereas, at a big box store, you get the four-foot panels or the four-foot panels.” Although they are providing the same services the pair are not in competition. They completely support and help each other.

turn back

Makeup tips for woMen over 40 By Jill Ellis-Worthington

‘‘ I

f I could turn back time; if I could find a way. . . ,” sings Cher in her 1989 hit Turn Back Time. At 43 years of age, she was strutting her stuff in a revealing fishnet costume and looking amazing doing so. She might have been singing about what many women desire – the ability to turn back time and take better care of our skin. Neglecting to wear sunscreen on one’s face, forgetting to remove makeup and do a thorough

cleansing before bed, smoking or choosing a poor diet can all show up in one’s face as the years add up. But there are some ways of minimizing how much of this damage we show to the world through some tricks of the trade that make up artists know and share. “Great makeup starts with great skin,” says Nina Badr, co-owner of N U Hair and Make Up Studio. She also teaches in the Fanshawe College esthetics program and tells students that  September/October 2017

exfoliation and moisturization are key, especially as skin ages. Rokhsana Purdy, owner of Purdy Natural – a local company that makes and retails all-natural skin care and makeup products, agrees, adding “skin is skin, whether you’re 20 or 50.” She encourages customers to “find natural products that suit your skin type and to eat a healthy diet, drink lots of water and protect skin from the sun” as one gets older. Image consultant with Pink Ink Makeup Artistry and author of Finesse Your Life, Jennifer Slay concurs. “Food and drink have an effect on skin. The wear and tear we incur on our skin takes longer to heal as we age.” She encourages a re-evaluation of skin care products as well as the colours one chooses to wear as we pass from our 30s to 40s and 50s. “Often we need to tweak or change our whole regimen as we get older,” she explains. “For instance dark lipstick can make you look older. More neutral and lighter colours can lend a more youthful look.” Another area that often shows age faster is the eyes. All three experts agree that wearing shimmery eye shadows can be a mistake. Badr explains, “Limit how much sparkle and frost you wear in the daytime as they can settle into creases and emphasize wrinkles, which ages you.” Since evening lighting is softer, she says that adding some sparkle and shimmer after dark is fine. Working on one eye at a time (as products can set quickly), Badr says to start with a matte eye primer as it will lessen the effects of hot flashes and humidity on your eye makeup.

“Wearing bronzer and mascara can go a long way to bringing life to your look when you’re busy.”

Next, use an under eye brightener on skin around the eye for a fresher look. “Using an eye highlighter in a powder or cream without sparkles around your eyes is a good way to add lift and bring brightness around the eyes,” advises Badr. Then she says to apply under-eye concealer or colour corrector to minimize dark circles; finish with a light powder to set the whole look. Acknowledging that this process may take more time than women want to invest in an everyday look, Badr says that steps can be eliminated to make it faster but for special occasions the full treatment might be called for. Purdy concurs, “Wearing bronzer and mascara can go a long way to bringing life to your look when you’re busy.” Slay adds, “A smile and confidence will get you everywhere no matter what age or what you’re wearing.” A youthful outlook, good skin care and careful reevaluation of one’s colour and product choices can help you turn back time. n

Where sleep is made Sleep Factory specializes in one of life’s most precious commodities By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A

one-stop shop for a good night’s sleep is what Sleep Factory offers its customers. Whatever they need to get their ZZZs, the company can provide it with customized products. “We can manufacture any size mattress and we’re one of the few who do that,” says Peter Chiaravalloti, general manager of the London store. With their own signature brand, Sleep Factory can create a bed to meet any specification, whether it’s a crib or toddler bed, European sized, or something to fit in the boat or RV. There are options such as adding a drawer as well as customized headboards in a wide selection of styles, fabrics and finishes. The company also carries major mattress brands and deals directly with

the manufacturers, which results in keeping costs competitive, Chiaravalloti says. One of the newest products in the London Sleep Factory showroom is a line of Murphy-style beds that, rather than pulling out from a wall, come in dresser-like cabinets. This offers the advantage of portability and being able to move the bed from room to room or to a new home. “Sleep Factory takes pride in carrying Canadian products,” Chiaravalloti says. These are manufactured by British Columbia-based Cabinet Bed. They come in 10 styles, and, unlike some competitors, are solid wood, using formaldehyde-free North American birch, and featuring 15 choices in finishes. Their memory foam mattresses are certified by CertiPUR-US to be low-

VOC and contain no harmful chemicals. London’s Sleep Factory has exclusive rights for this area to carry the Cabinet Bed products and Chiaravalloti proudly states that it was recently named by the manufacturer as the number one dealer in Ontario. Sleep Factory, a family-owned business, also takes pride in treating its customers like family, Chiaravalloti notes. Its services include free delivery and set-up, as well as removal of the old mattress. The company launched its first store in Kitchener in 1978 and the London outlet opened 30 years ago. There are now 13 locations across southwestern Ontario, plus one in Prince Edward Island. It’s expanding with three more Ontario stores opening soon. n

ou can get anything you want – for your home – at Geerlinks Home Furniture. The family-owned and operated St. Thomas store offers a full complement of home furnishings, appliances and decor items. And, what sets it apart from other furniture stores is a focus on providing customized products, says manager Danielle Geerlinks. “Because we are independently owned, we can choose our suppliers, which gives us the flexibility to custom order. It’s not a choice of just what’s in the warehouse,” she says. Geerlinks believes that offers the opportunity for customers to have “a unique shopping experience with a boutique feel.” Although the furniture showroom FOR MORE INFORMATION

was launched in 2004, she says many people don’t realize the vast selection of furnishings available. From living room and dining room furniture to appliances and bedding, every room is covered. As well, there are window coverings – “a huge element of our business” – and a wealth of decor items from lighting to wall art to electric fireplaces and stoves. Furniture comes with a choice of hundreds of fabrics and colours. Couches can be ordered as one-piece or sectional. Bedding includes all sizes by major brand names as well as dressers, nightstands and a full range of linens. Appliances run the gamut from stoves and refrigerators to freezers, washers and dryers and even vacuum cleaners. Window coverings feature hundreds of options from fabrics to California shutters.

Geerlinks Home Furniture staff members – Adam, Danielle and Murray - are experienced and ready to help you make choices to maximize your home’s décor.

An on-site design team is available for no-pressure consultations with customers to assist with their choices. Geerlinks says the customer service provided is an immense source of pride. “As local owners, we know our customers. So it’s personal,” she says. “Often staff are serving their friends and neighbours.” The store offers services including delivery, set-up and financing. The Geerlinks store, third largest of some 1,100 Home stores across Canada, received the 2015 Walter J. Hachborn Store of the Year Award, presented by the company in recognition of high standards in retailing, merchandising, staff performance and overall quality and service. “That’s a really big deal for us,” Geerlinks says proudly. n

Set for success Dealership’s makeover sets standard

By Clare Dear

I

n the car business, it takes more than great products to be competitive – the dealers need to have comfortable, inviting facilities which fulfil the needs of their customers if they’re going to keep pace with the competition. When you’re working in the premium marketplace, that point is even more significant. BMW dealer Bill Duffield has been operating his premium brand dealership on the same Wharncliffe Road South site for more than 25 years and his store has undergone numerous renovations, upgrades and rebuilds to stay competitive with other stores along the “Golden Auto Mile.” BMW London launched a massive makeover and expansion last summer that is now complete, creating a state-of-the-art store. Bernie Wong, BMW London’s

general sales manager, says the existing facility was completely gutted. Now, staff and customers can enjoy what’s virtually a new store that features 5,000 square feet of additional showroom and office space, including a new mezzanine level with offices and meeting rooms; a service reception area that has been upgraded to meet BMW AG specifications and an additional service lane; a new three-bay car delivery area, and a new customer lounge. There’s even a new level two charging station installed outside the showroom that allows customers to plug in their electric or plug-in hybrid BMW for a quick recharge. While staying competitive with their neighbours was part of the motivation for change, Duffield says it wasn’t the sole goal.

“We need to be able to provide the best possible buying experience for our customers,” he says. “Our customers have definite expectations when they come to our store, and it’s essential that we meet those expectations.” There was also a secondary reason for the rebuild. “We were growing out of the old place,” Wong grins. “We needed more elbow room.” Reaction to the new store, which has been designed to meet the latest BMW AG standards, has been positive from customers, as well as staff. “Our customers don’t recognize the place,” Wong says. “They say it’s like a completely new store, very comfortable.” Wong says the staff, too, appreciate the airy openness – and the elbow room. n
