“When ‘I’ is replaced by ‘we,’ even illness is replaced by wellness.” MALCOLM X

C

ooties . . . . I quit! Do you remember playing that as a kid? It was a form of childhood tag, best played in large groups, that kept us occupied for hours when the grownups needed to clean up after a church potluck or school social. We could run and scream and just be kids. For me it seems like such a good metaphor for what has been happening in the world for the past six months. (Can you really believe that it has been six months since the world changed?) We all potentially have COVID cooties, but we cannot quit. It is exhausting at some level, even for those of us not working on the front lines or as essential workers. The more life goes back to ‘normal’ the more it is obvious that it is really not normal. I was thinking about what it would take to have a week off. Not from work but from just thinking about COVID and its impact. No conversations, no news, no wearing a mask, no worry about where I am or who I’m with. I was thinking how that could happen, and I just couldn’t come up with a good answer. My ultimate escape has always been travelling, and, if I really need time off, it is a resort or a cruise. These are both pretty much adult day care. Someone else cooks, cleans, plans activities. I just have to show up and breathe. No effort at all. That kind of mindless relaxation would be nice right now, but those aren’t prudent choices, even if they are possible in some parts of the world. So, the only real choice is to limit contact with negative people who belabour the subject, limit news consumption (which is tough for a print junkie from way back), limit

exposure to ‘the world.’ These aren’t fun options. Try to treat those things and people as having cooties. I love the above quote from Malcom X – so appropriate now in view of both our intensely health/wellness consciousness and as a tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping the world. The saying ‘we’re in this together’ has become trite, but it continues to be true as we move into the fall-andwinter cold/cough/flu season. We will triumph if we stick together for everyone’s protection and the betterment of the world at large. The editor’s note in our Summer issue received great feedback, and I appreciated hearing about your journeys; please continue to reach out by email and on Facebook. Be well,

PARADE OF RENOVATIONS 2020

F

or three decades, the London Home Builders’ Association (LHBA) has hosted the Parade of Renovations (POR). This long-term event has allowed homeowners to meet renovators and see their work in real time. Despite the obstacles presented by operating in a world affected by COVID-19, this year is no different. Adapting to the new reality, the Parade of Renovations will be presented virtually, over a month instead of a weekend. “October is renovation month,” says Cathie Stark, director of administration for the LHBA, “so it’s the perfect time for this month-long Parade.” The appeal of being able to see a finished project and talk to the renovator about what it entailed hasn’t changed. “If you’re buying a new house, builders have models you can tour. The POR offers the same type of opportunity,” says Stark. With the new format, each of the expected eight to 12 renovations will be showcased in a 10-minute video. Melissa Schenk of MS2 Productions will meet with each of the renovators to walk through his/her project(s). “In the videos, homeowners will be able to get a real feel for the work, and we’ll be showing the details up-close,” explains Schenk. “They’ll be able to watch the videos that speak to the projects they are most interested in again and again.” Information about how to connect with the renovators will be available in each video; some will be doing live online chats. The list of renovations and details of the POR will be available on the LHBA website (www.lhba.on.ca), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/LondonHomeBuildersAssociation) and Instagram (londonhba). Videos will be rolled out two or three per week during the month of October on the LHBA Facebook page. The annual POR supports local charities through sales of passports to gain entry to the homes. Since that isn’t possible, this year’s charity will be highlighted throughout October: Youth Opportunities Unlimited. Stark adds that all of the showcased projects have been done by RenoMark renovators.

GOING virtual

CCR Build+Remodel Inc.

The Parade of Renovations gives us a chance to showcase the passion and details that go into every job we do. For homeowners, it’s the closest option to test driving a renovation before making the big decision. Like many things in the world, the event is changing this year, but we believe the virtual Parade has been thoughtfully created to showcase the beauty of these stunning transformations. As we all navigate through these strange times with COVID-19 we want to keep potential clients, our present homeowners and ourselves safe. Having this virtual Parade is a great way for people to be able to see our projects from the comfort of their own homes. I think it's always important to make people feel safe and comfortable in their decisions and for all of us to be responsible, no matter what we are doing in our day to day lives. The virtual tour is just another part of our new way of dealing with COVID-19. Mark Vaandering Millennium Construction & Design Inc.

Will this year’s parade be different? Yes, but it will still be amazing. When I spoke today to one of the homeowners and told her the proposed plans, she was so excited that thousands of people could view her home but wouldn’t be traipsing across her new floors. It’s the best of both worlds. With the ability for homeowners to interact with the renovators through social media on specific days, the only thing missing will be the smell of newly renovated spaces and candy. We look forward to “seeing you there.” Craig Hardy Covenant Construction

We look forward to the Parade of Renovations every year; it’s such a great opportunity to showcase the fantastic work that LHBA renovators are doing throughout the city. Although we’ll be sad to miss the typical face-to-face interaction with the public, we are very excited to keep it going with the virtual parade this year. We think the virtual tour will allow Londoners to have a unique opportunity to view these projects, while also hearing from the great companies who have helped create them. We’re also proud to be able to once again support Youth Opportunities Unlimited and all the great things they do. Greg Hassal Riverside Construction and LHBA Renovators’ Council Chair

T

he historic character of a 1940s-era home in London’s Old South, as well as the charm of the neighbourhood, appealed to the owners when they purchased this house two decades ago. But they also realized that the age of the home would necessitate upgrading over time. It has been a work in process completed in stages, including a living-room makeover, kitchen facelift and finishing the basement. 

OPPOSITE PAGE The latest in a long list of renovations made to this Old South home, built in the 1940s, was a twostorey addition to the rear of the home. TOP AND INSET Attention has been paid to preserving the home’s heritage and character while building in contemporary amenities necessary for a modern family’s comfort.

LEFT AND ABOVE Roomy, open common-use rooms, like the living room and family room, became possible when the home’s layout was reconfigured during the latest renovation.

Some of the furnishings were supplied by Nikki Marshall of Defining Spaces Staging to make the home photo-ready.

Recently, a major renovation with Melbarr Design Build concluded one of the last and most extensive pieces on their modernization to-do list: a two-storey addition to the back of the house. This opened up the main level and created a comfortable family room. It also expanded the upper level master suite and has generated additional storage at the basement level. The main floor space previously encompassed an enclosed porch and adjacent deck. It was a small confined space, not appropriate for a usable living area, the homeowners say. The new family room is open to the front living room, providing a sizeable area for relaxing and entertaining. A rear wall of windows and patio doors access a wrap-around wood deck and the backyard beyond. The hallway from the front entrance previously ended at a two-piece  14 Lifestyle September/October 2020

He cites features such as an original narrow leaded and frosted window (between the family room and powder room) and the bathroom’s tile floor. The latter had circular black and white tiles that were individually laid to form a pattern that reflects the time period. “That was one of the most painstaking tasks of the entire project,” Melnick says. Above the family room, the master suite expansion includes a large walkin closet leading from the bedroom to an expansive ensuite bathroom. It is separated by a sliding barn-style door. The ensuite includes an oversize glass-fronted tile shower, a standalone soaker tub and a double-basin vanity, with a centre cabinetry tower plus heated ceramic tile flooring. An adjacent laundry area is a much-anticipated bonus, eliminating the need to carry laundry to and from the basement. The project also involved upgrades to the exterior of the house. This included siding, soffits and fascia, as well as a new garage door. The family is delighted with their new living space and credit Melnick and the crew – headed by project lead Dave Free – with making the six-month process smooth and flawless. They only needed to move out for a short time over the Christmas season, when the main level flooring was being installed. n

MODERN

Dream kitchens are created in The Wood Studio

Designing a kitchen that suits both the character of a home and meets the wish list requirements of its owners is what Elias Polizoes does best. The owners of this dream kitchen wanted a culinary space that hinted of a mid-century modern vibe. The minimalism of the MCM aesthetic creates an open space for food prep and entertaining. Polizoes worked with Luke Oslizlo of Details Renovation and Design to implement this project. He credits the synergy between the two entities with the renovation’s success. The two companies have been working on projects for four years. Oslizlo and Polizoes have the shared values of attention to detail and a passion for work well done. “There’s a trust that is important to these relationships,” says Polizoes. 20 Lifestyle September/October 2020

PRO TIP Think about an island as the statement piece of your kitchen.

Those who dream of a chef’s kitchen – something custom-made just for them – often feel that it may be out of their reach. Enter The Wood Studio. Designing and crafting islands and cabinetry – usable workspaces that look like pieces of high-end furniture – keeps costs reasonable while giving a unique look. In this kitchen, Polizoes chose Shinnoki, wood veneered panels from Belgium, for the cabinetry. “It gives a nice consistent look for the perimeter.”

● FOR MORE INFORMATION

Calling the island “the most social part of the kitchen,” Polizoes used solid walnut in the creation of this beauty that measures eight feet by four feet. A piece of functional furniture, electricity for its appliances was run up one of the legs to keep it as streamlined as the rest of the room.

A large storage pantry (nearly 12 feet long), keeps clutter at bay and is cleverly disguised as more cabinetry. This generous walk-in area stores all the appliances necessary for a chef to function.

ome to the festival without leaving the comfort of home. The Forest City Film Festival (running from October 17-25) will offer all of its popular features virtually: feature films, shorts, youth films, music videos, animation, panel discussions, chats with filmmakers and PitchFest. In keeping with its mandate, FCFF celebrates the work of London and area filmmakers and directors. Shifting to online viewing has provided the opportunity to involve those leaders wherever they live now and to engage with a broader audience. One of those is actor Victor Garber, who will Zoom in for a live-streamed chat with the audience. After a fast switch to online viewing for the Youth Festival in April, executive director Dorothy Downs said they realized they could do the entire festival virtually. “We had a great turnout and the results were really interactive.” For the Festival in October, a question and answer session will precede each screening, with a chance to

interact with the filmmakers. “The Q and A has always been a special part of the festival,” said Downs. “We will continue to do that – it’s a vibrant way to communicate with filmmakers.” A selection committee has chosen 17 features, 30 shorts, 15 music videos and six animations and a further three to five films will be curated out of the competition. “Every film is connected to the region,” said Downs. “It’s a very different grouping of films and the quality is high. This region has mountains of talent. There is nowhere else you will see it gathered together.” About 30 program packages include short film, introduction by the filmmaker with a special message for the local audience, feature film and question and answer session. Each of two Indigenous programs include a film by multiple award-winning artist Shelley Niro. She also hosts a panel on Indigenous female filmmakers. Opening night kicks off the new music video category with iskwē – Little Star by Juno award-winning Sarah Legault. The Youth Program, on October 22, presents 20 short films and prizes for

high school filmmakers. “Think of it as the OFSAA for creative kids,” said Downs. “The films will move you. Some are absolute masterpieces.” Seminars are available during the day. Downs is excited by the 2020 industry segment, especially the potential to spread across the country. “Up close with Andy Robertshaw – a military advisor for such films as War Horse, 1917, Wonder Woman and anything about World War I – will be a fascinating conversation.” PitchFest will take place on Zoom with a livestream on YouTube. Screenplay winners will be announced October 25 and the Forest City 48 will film September 19 to 20. Depending on health regulations, it will screen on October 20, and winners will be announced on October 25. “We want to maintain the interactivity and celebration of creators,” said Downs. “I hope people want to come online. For the first year, the films will be available to screen until November 1, with a weekend pass.” A total of 71-75 films will be screened during the festival. n

COUNTRY CHARM NEARBY WOODS EDGE IS HOME TO STAY By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

Melchers Construction and Saratoga Homes have built one- and twostorey homes in the Mount Brydges

A

combination of smalltown charm and nearby big-city amenities has resulted in a win-win for all involved with the Mount Brydges’ Woods Edge neighbourhood. When he acquired the property in 2012, the investment was “a bit of a gamble,” says John Lean, owner of Woods Edge Developments. “Whether people would want to move there was somewhat an unknown variable. Mount Brydges had not had an expansion in a long time.” But the village’s diversified commercial district – plus its parks, playgrounds, arena and recreational clubs and associations – proved attractive, particularly to young

families who comprise the majority of the Woods Edge population. Soon people realized it was a good place to live, Lean says. He credits the foresight and support of the Strathroy-Carodoc municipal council and planners with advancing the success of the development and helping him decide to invest there. It has worked in their favour. “I believe growth in Mount Brydges is certain at this point,” he says. “They are bringing in more investments and more services, parks, recreational opportunities, all those good things that make up a great place to live.” Yet it is just a short drive into downtown London. “It’s easy to get in and out of the city and also easy to get onto 

Highways 402 and 401,” Lean says. It’s also just a short drive to the town of Strathroy, the largest community in Middlesex County outside of London. The Woods Edge development is now in its final phase of construction, and Lean has sold out his share of the 164 lots. But there are still some available from builders. “The lots will likely be sold by the end of the year and the homes built out by mid-2021,” says Chris Melchers of Melchers Construction. Both Melchers and Saratoga Homes owner Doug Durnin extol the benefits of building in a smaller community. “Price point and lot size are two big advantages,” Melchers says. “If you compare lot prices to London, they’re significantly less. And the lot sizes are much larger.” Durnin agrees, “The lots are more affordable compared to cities and other small towns. This allows you to give buyers more home for the same price.” Billed as executive-sized country lots, they range from 60-feet wide and up to 150-feet deep. Providing choices for buyers, there are different types of lots to fit different families. According to Melchers, “Some back onto farmers’ fields. Some back onto other homes. Some back onto ponds. So there’s a variety of lot types.” Both have built a combination of one-floor and two-storey homes. Melchers says the majority of his have been two-storeys, designed for families. “The family lifestyle is an attraction,” he says. “There’s a lot of kids in the area to go out and play with.” Plus there is a school right across the street from the development and more public services on the horizon, Lean notes. “My sense is that it’s going well for our buyers there and that they’re happy,” he says. “That makes me happy because I really wouldn’t want to do it without it being a success from the residents’ point of view.” n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION WOODS EDGE DEVELOPMENTS 519-641-3063 • www.woodsedge.ca MELCHERS CONSTRUCTION www.melchersconstruction.com 519-473-4149 SARATOGA HOMES 519-670-2639 • www.saratogahomes.ca

NEW PRESENTATION CENTRE Hayhoe Homes’ new presentation centre in the southeast St. Thomas Harvest Run community is “perfect for families who need space but don’t want to compromise style,” says interior design consultant Candace Miller. The 3,000-square-foot home includes four bedrooms, three on the upper level and another on the finished lower level. Miller says the home’s styling and colour palette borrow from a West Coast industrial feel with a move to lighter woods and warm colours accented by bold pops of black. This style is enhanced by funky-patterned tile flooring and southern-inspired designs in the textiles, rugs and greenery. The cabinetry is multi-toned and

the kitchen island features floating shelves and moody LED lighting. An upper-level balcony overlooks the two-storey great room, anchored by a towering fireplace and open to an expansive wooden rear deck. Adjacent to the great room is the open-concept kitchen and an eating area with cathedral ceiling. On the main level, a front office, with adjacent powder room, overlooks a covered porch and the two-car garage accesses the mudroom and laundry. The master suite showcases a generous-sized walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom with custom shower and whirlpool tub. The lower level also features a large, comfortable family room and three-piece bathroom. n

Oke Woodsmith BUILDING SYSTEMS

A model home, under construction by Oke Woodsmith in Grand Bend, is designed to showcase the company’s expertise in building high-end homes. This ranch-style home with a loft above the three-bay garage and a walkout to the rear yard is set on a large treed lot backing onto the Old Ausable River. “Most of our homes are custom built, but we construct models to exhibit our work,” says company president Randall Oke. The home will be available for touring during construction, “so we can show the nuts and bolts as building progresses to the finished product.” One-floor living is feasible with the extensive master suite and laundry on the main level. But there are also two loft bedrooms and another on the finished lower level. That level also includes a recreation room, games area, wine cellar and bar. It opens to a patio below a main level covered porch and deck. The house boasts three fireplaces, on the lower level, in the great room and outside on the rear porch. Exterior siding and stone add to what Oke calls cottage ambiance. “The great thing about Grand Bend is you can live there year-round but feel like you’re on holiday at the cottage.”

1. THE MAIN FLOOR features a gourmet kitchen and enormous pantry. With indoor/outdoor living and entertaining in mind, the dining area with oversized sliders and a living room that opens to a covered patio with a double-sided fireplace. The master bedroom and laundry are on this level, as well as easy access to a three-car garage. 2. THE BASEMENT will up your entertainment game further with a games area and bar, with seating for six. Uncork and unwind on a second covered balcony that has easy access to the wine cellar. Visiting guests and family members can be accommodated in a second master on the lower level.

hange your mind or change your situation is a popular school of thought. In May of 2019, Gisela Thibault decided that she wanted to change her situation. “I was depressed looking in the mirror in the mornings, I could see the wrinkles and discolouration.” She decided to take action and visited Dr. Corey Moore at the Woodfield Surgical Centre to see what her options might be. The one that appealed to her the most was CO2 laser resurfacing. Dr. Moore describes it as “one of a group of ablative resurfacing techniques.” These techniques include chemical peels, mechanical means (dermabrasion) and laser resurfacing of various types. For example, dermabrasion affects the top layers of skin and so works well for ridding oneself of freckles. Lasers go deeper and are more useful for getting rid of wrinkles and scarring, according to Dr. Moore. Patient information describes the process: The laser generates high energy in a very precise spot that literally vaporizes the skin. Dr. Moore adds, “The laser causes injury to the skin and the body produces new skin to replace it.” The new surface skin produced is wrinkle free. This technique is also effective for those wanting to be rid of acne scars. This is not new technology. Dr. Moore has been using it during the 18 years that he has been in practice. He favours the CO2 laser because “we can set the depth; it’s more exact.” One of the qualifications for this treatment is that the patient must be able to take at least two weeks away from work or other life activities during the healing process. Also, sun exposure must be avoided during that time as well. Thibault is thrilled with the results. Before the treatment, she applied fullface makeup before venturing away from home but now “I find that it’s easier for me to go out with little or no makeup. I don’t get down when I look in the mirror. I just feel better.” That’s a huge boon for this widow who wanted to do something special for herself. While she acknowledges it is an expensive treatment, she says the boost to her emotional health is well worth the money spent. The process is straightforward: schedule an assessment visit to discuss the procedure and/or other procedures; pre-surgery preparation includes blood 

SKIN DEEP ~ Continued from page 49 tests and an electrocardiogram to ensure that undergoing anesthetic is advisable, which the patient receives during the procedure. Dr. Moore performs CO2 laser treatments in a surgical suite at his clinic. After the one-hour procedure the patient is in the recovery room until fully awake and able to travel home. A driver must accompany him/her home and stay the night to ensure all is well. Thibault says she went back to the clinic the next day to be checked. She used a heavy coating of Vaseline on her skin to keep it moist. Bedding, pillows and clothing may become greasy, so furniture is covered as much as possible. The head should be slightly elevated during sleep, so she used two pillows. One pillow on each side of the body is also recommended so as not to roll during sleep and cause pain or marks on the new skin. Only sterile water with one tablespoon of vinegar is used to wash the face, using pieces of gauze, twice daily. Water, soap and shampoo must all be kept away from the face during showers. Thibault reports that though it was not painful, her skin did feel hot. A coating of Vaseline must be applied to the face constantly and keeping it in the refrigerator helped. The skin is red, numb, swollen and oozes a straw-coloured liquid during the healing process. Applying makeup to cover the redness, Thibault went out to do volunteer work after 12 days, adding her skin was fully healed after three months. Some take up to six months to fully heal. She’s still very careful in the sun, wearing large floppy hats and sunscreen. Thibault feels a renewed sense of confidence and highly recommends having C02 laser resurfacing to those who want to rid themselves of facial wrinkles or scars. “It’s definitely better than I expected.” n

GRAND BEND & AREA

Drive to dine THE WHITE SQUIRREL’S NEW PATIO IS A PLEASURE By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

A

master plan to create a premier entertainment destination at White Squirrel Golf Club got a major boost this summer with the addition of outdoor dining. Located on Lake Huron north of Grand Bend, it also features The Acorn, a brand new pro shop. “White Squirrel is becoming one of the area’s best venues for golf, dining and entertainment for the community, golfers and visitors to enjoy year-round,” says assistant general manager Dusty Carter. When the new owners – Mac Voisin, Marcela Bahar, Al and Lynn Orth – purchased the former Bayview Golf Club in 2018, Carter says their vision was to beautify the property and provide a place for the community to “enjoy a wonderful experience.” This season’s improvements are driving that vision forward. Carter says The Acorn has received an enthusiastic welcome. “The public has been in awe of our state-of-the-art shop with many custom details that are showstoppers.” She cites the acrylic bar, teak tables, wood detailing and art by Lucan’s Murals In Metal. Guests are invited to browse the pro shop’s varied retail offerings, including an extensive array of stylish clothing. The patio, accommodating more than 100 people with dining and lounging areas, “accessorizes the building beautifully,” Carter says. It features live music and is weatherproof with shade canopies for relief from sun and rain. Like the restaurant, the patio menu offers something for everyone, from seasonal specialties to pub classics and old favourites, she says. “Chef Aaron Smith and his team source local produce, meats and seafood to create their delicious offerings.” White Squirrel has also introduced “Dashboard Dining.” With this novel service, patrons can order a meal and take it out on a cart to a designated spot on the course to dine while enjoying

A PIECE OF

TURKS AND CAICOS OFFERS A PEACEFUL RETREAT By Jill Ellis-Worthington

54 Lifestyle September/October 2020

Vacationing in an idyllic setting on a tropical island, populated by A-listers, with a private high-end home – that was the wish of Jeremy and Trish Wiggell. Not just a wish, a dream – one they brought to life.

Turks and Caicos is a luxurious destination, with its quiet serenity, crystalline waters and white powder beaches that attract travellers from around the world. RIGHT Londoners Trish and Jeremy Wiggell have built a vacation property there that offers comfortable high-end accommodations for vacationers. BELOW Their property includes lush grounds and a jewel of a pool, the perfect setting for dining or cooling. Though international travel isn’t advised at this time, having wonderful destinations to dream about or for future vacation planning is a good thing.

There are no beach vendors, and it’s very calm and serene, with its own natural beauty.”

The couple, who resides in London most of the year, purchased their lot near Providenciales, Turks and Caicos two years ago and started building in 2019. They fell in love with the lush island of Providenciales, often called Provo, with its bucolic pace and peaceful atmosphere. Trish is originally from Wales and Jeremy hails from England, so they are at home on the island, which is one of a group of islands that are a British Overseas Protectorate. English is the prevalent language and American dollars are the currency used. “It’s pretty unique in terms of its culture. Ever since it has been developed, its been a high-end clientele that visits, with many homes owned by celebrities,” says Jeremy Wiggell. He names Bruce Willis, Keith Richards and Celine Dion as some of the luminaries who reside there. The couple appreciates that this is a less visited part of the Caribbean. “It’s never crowded compared to average holiday resort areas. There are no beach vendors,

and it’s very calm and serene, with its own natural beauty.” In their 60s, the couple built Gracehaven as a vacation home and future retirement residence on a half-acre of property. It is 250 yards from Grace Bay beach, rated one of the world’s best by Trip Advisor. The two-storey, 1,100 square foot home, with a pool and private grounds, is “a lush tropical setting, with natural vegetation around it,” says Wiggell. Jeremy is a management consultant, and Trish owns the Bijou Boutique in Byron. The house is ideal for them as a couple. It features a large master suite on the second floor that includes an open ensuite, with a walk-in shower, and a balcony overlooking the pool. The lower level contains the living room and kitchen. When not in residence, the Wiggells rent the home as a vacation property. Corry (64) and Svetlana (54) Spitters were the first guests to enjoy the property. The B.C. couple travels extensively and was on the hunt for a non-resort property for a winter getaway when Corry found it on the web. Corry Spitters has been to over 60 countries over the years but had not visited Turks and Caicos before the couple’s two-week holiday there last winter. They wanted to get away to 

The Wiggell’s property, with its quietude and immediate proximity to a 12-mile long beach fit the bill. The Spitters liked the privacy of the gated home and the understated elegance of its décor. Svetlana, who Corry calls a “fantastic cook,” made good use of the kitchen, preparing most of the couple’s meals during their stay. The house is just a mile and half from a fully stocked grocery store. Corry owns Oranya Farms Organic Chicken, so he appreciated the good

Wi-Fi connection, enabling him to stay in contact with work during their time away. There are direct flights from Toronto to Providenciales and the Spitters rented a car to tour the island. Though the Spitters wanted a quiet holiday, Turks and Caicos also offers active vacation pursuits for those who want to have a mix of relaxation and action. Besides swimming in the property’s pool and in the ocean, other water activities include snorkeling from the beach (no need for an expensive boat excursion), kite surfing and deep-sea fishing. The local bars and clubs offer night life, as well.

Though designed for a couple, the house sleeps four, as there’s a Murphy bed in the living room. It rents for $295 (US) per night in low season and $475 (US) per night in high season, which runs from Christmas to the end of March. Wiggell says that one of the island’s attractive draws is its consistent temperatures in the 70s and 80s during high season. Turks and Caicos also has a favourable record of being missed by some of the disastrous storms that regularly devastate many Caribbean islands. “It’s only been hit seriously (by hurricanes) twice in the past 20 years,” he explains. n

➣ 2020 ACURA RDX

➣ 2021 TOYOTA VENZA

Sporty RDX scores high with consumers

Stylish new Venza features fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain

It has been a year since Acura introduced its third generation RDX compact luxury SUV and the desirable new features that attracted buyers then have now become solid selling points great styling, sporty performance and a spacious, well-appointed interior. In fact, the new RDX has been so successful Acura didn’t mess with it for 2020. The only change is the addition of a new exterior colour: Platinum White.

The 2021 Toyota Venza sets a new standard for mid-size crossovers, delivering sedan-like driving comfort plus the versatility of an all-wheel-drive utility vehicle. It also takes fuel efficiency to a new level in the segment with a gas/electric hybrid system as the sole powertrain offering.

The only engine offered continues to be a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that churns out 272 horsepower and 280 poundfeet of torque. It is enough power to deliver impressive acceleration and smooth cruising performance, thanks to the 10-speed automatic transmission, which makes the most efficient use of that output. Acura’s excellent SH-AWD (Super Handling AllWheel Drive) system is standard equipment across the lineup. The interior design has a high-quality look, with premium materials and a solid build, enhanced by a full range of convenience and advanced technology features as standard equipment. Behind the second row of seats, there is plenty of room for cargo, while overhead there is a panoramic sunroof. The RDX has earned top marks for safety. The 2020 edition has been given a perfect five-star rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while the 2019 model was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

AT A GLANCE

Toyota’s electronic on-demand all-wheel drive is also standard equipment. This highly efficient system maximizes the advantages of the hybrid powertrain by using a separate rear-mounted electric motor, instead of the conventional transfer case, to power the rear wheels. It works seamlessly, distributing up to 80 percent of the torque output to the rear wheels when needed. Inside the well-appointed cabin, there is plenty of space for up to five persons and their things. There is 1,027 litres of cargo space behind the second row of seating. The hybrid system’s new compact lithium-ion battery pack is small enough to fit under the rear seats, so it doesn’t take up any cargo or passenger space. The Venza’s standard safety package includes eight airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System featuring enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, anti-lock braking and Smart Stop technology. Standard wheel/tire packages start with 18-inch, multi-spoke, two-tone alloy wheels for the Venza LE trim, while the XLE and Limited are fitted with 19-inch multi-spoke super chrome finished alloy wheels.

Shop like a traveller

TOP Bettina Weber, owner of Boutique Firenze.

Boutique Firenze offers fine European products

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

W

hile globetrotting may be on hold for the time being, shoppers in this region can find a taste of European flavour close to home. Boutique Firenze, a London shop, specializes in items imported from Italy. This includes an extensive array of gloves, in a range of colours and styles unequalled outside that country, and colourful pashmina shawls and scarves from silk and cashmere to acrylic. As well there is a varied selection of unique Canadian-made products and giftware. “It’s a destination shop, very much an old-fashioned shopping experience, unhurried and sensory with delicious smells and lots of things to look at,” says owner Bettina Weber. “I try to find products that I like, that make

me smile, and hope they will have the same effect on my customers.” Weber and her husband, Len Elliott, conceived the idea for the business after celebrating their wedding in the romantic Italian countryside. “We loved it so much we started thinking ‘what can we do to come here all the time?’” Over the years, there have been countless sourcing and buying trips, resulting in a team of suppliers across Italy that Weber has come to know and appreciate, many are small family businesses. Her array of imports on display continues to grow: gloves from Florence and Naples, Murano glass jewellery from Venice, stationery, scarves and a delectable natural lemon dish soap from Florence. At the same time, Weber is increasing her Canadian merchandise, such

as the hats and purses from a local milliner, children’s toys by a London woodworker, placemats and aprons from refugee women at London’s World Tailors. Recently her offerings have expanded to include safety items, such as handmade face masks, also fashioned locally by the World Tailors, including children’s sizes. From British Columbia, Weber carries masks and scarves featuring Indigenous designs by First Nations artisans. There are also sustainability products like beeswax food wrap and the Lucky Iron Fish. This is a Canadian-invented cooking aid that adds natural iron to food, providing a valuable resource for people suffering from anemia. n

Autumn perfect time to shop local

TOP FROM LEFT Peter, Alf & Phil Crunican

A cornucopia at Crunican Orchards

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

H

arvest season is here and the folks at Crunican Orchards on Richmond Street North have been busy getting the autumn produce ready to market. “Along with the apples, we have pumpkins and squash that we grow ourselves and fresh fruit from local producers, peaches and plums and more,” says Philip Crunican, who operates the business with his brothers Peter and Alf. The farm, near Elginfield, has been run by four generations of Crunicans for more than a century. The first trees were planted by Philip’s grandfather in 1910, and it’s still very much a family affair with mom Bernice, and sisters Barb and Anne helping out. “To continuously have apples for

100 years or more on the same farm is something,” Philip acknowledges. “We would certainly be one of the oldest orchards in this region.” The 30-acre orchard, with a density of 400 trees per acre, produces more than 15 apple varieties, including Macintosh, Empire, Ida Red, Delicious, Fuji, Mutsu, Ambrosia and the ever-popular Honeycrisp. The latter is definitely a consumer favourite, Philip says. For many years, a major focus for the orchard was the wholesale market, accounting for some 70 to 80 per cent of sales. But that was beginning to falter when Philip and his brothers took over a decade ago, so they made the decision to transition to selling through their own storefront, buoyed by the buy-local trend.

The onsite store was opened by Philip’s father and uncle in 1950. Today, it’s become a go-to shop for consumers across the region, and even as far afield as Kincardine and Owen Sound. It is frequented by shoppers looking to support the local economy and boost health and nutrition by consuming fresher farm-to-plate foods. The market store carries a wide variety of products from area enterprises. These include honey, jams, pasta, cheese, dried beans, maple syrup and related items, and, of course, apple products and cider. It’s an evolving element for Crunican, Philip says. “We’ve always supported local businesses. Some we’ve been selling for 40-plus years, and we’re always looking to expand.” n

Custom Shades makes strong entrance

n just a few months, Custom Shades of London has become a go-to retailer for window treatments. Despite opening June 1, in the wake of the pandemic shutdown, business has been good, says Janice Brock, co-owner with Wes Petch. “People are dropping in. We’re getting a lot of regular business. It’s primarily walk-in traffic.” She credits an online presence and word-of-mouth referrals. “We’ve had a lot of great referrals, and we pride ourselves on that,” Brock says. “We’ve built our business on our reputation.” Brock and Petch opened the London store as a sister location to Custom Covers For Home and Office, which they’ve operated in Exeter for 15 years. Both locations are Hunter Douglas gallery stores, with staff certified by

the prominent global manufacturer of custom window blinds, shades, shutters and draperies. Gallery stores are the company’s designated highest level for its dealers. “You can come in and see everything Hunter Douglas has to offer, including their specialized automation treatments, the up-and-coming element,” Brock says. Installer Patrick Alber has been trained as a professional in the company’s signature PowerView Automation. These are motorized treatments that can be programmed and controlled remotely by smart technology. Custom Shades fabricates its own draperies and home décor items, like cushions and upholstery. Workroom specialist Cecelia Corbett has extensive experience in refurbishing marine, automotive and aviation interiors.

The stores also carry fabrics, rugs and a full line of bedding products from Canadian companies. These include Cuddle Down, an Ottawa-based manufacturer of duvets, pillows and bed linens that were formerly a staple at London’s Kingsmills department store. Custom Shades’ interior designers work with customers in the stores and at in-home consultations to help them create their ideal vision by coordinating window coverings, decor, bedding and fabrics. Brock says their work includes a mix of new homes, renovations and updates. As the London business continues to grow, they hope to make more connections with local designers and contractors. n
