“You don’t truly understand a woman until you understand every word she isn’t saying to you.” AUTHOR UNKNOWN
D
uring the past year and a half, I’ve been devoting this space to thoughts on our collective pandemic experience. But now that we are (hopefully) seeing the light on the other side, I wanted to take a different tack. We need a bit of a smile now, and I hope this provides you one. Please don’t take offence, as that is not my intention. I love, admire and respect men but, like me, you may feel that the genders often do not share the same mindset. I also do not disclude those in the LBGTQ2S+ among us. That is not my personal experience, but perhaps you relate to my thoughts below from those perspectives.
FIVE THINGS MEN NEED TO KNOW • We DO need six, eight or 10 pairs of black shoes. Each is a different level of dressiness and can be worn with different outfits in the various seasons.
• Yes, we DO take special care to look fabulous when attending a business or social event where we may meet unkind colleagues or frenemies. Like Scottish blue-faced warriors of old or British red coated soldiers, being perfectly coiffed, made-up and dressed provides both a good offence and defence. • A smile isn’t always a sign of happiness. Look at our eyes for the truth. Please share this with your partner or spouse if you think he would also get a chuckle from reading it. If spending more time with your beloved during the many months of lockdown has given you a better understanding of the opposite sex, I would appreciate hearing about it at the email address below. Be well and be safe,
• Women need women friends in a different way than men need men friends. And, yes, after a year and a half of no ‘girls’ nights,’ we DO need spend a lot of time re-bonding with different friend groups. (This may involve wine.) • When we say “u-huh” or “O.K.” or “whatever,” it doesn’t mean we are

LAKESIDE
VIEWS AND VISITORS WELCOME HERE By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
N
estled amongst lush foliage and fronting an expansive beach with sweeping Lake Huron vistas, Terry and Rob Taylor have created a natural oasis. An effort that took two decades and two major builds has resulted in a home that reflects the beauty and serenity of its surroundings. Because of its spectacular setting and lot position, the views are favourite features

of the homeowners. Across the back of the house – “We call it the front because it faces the lake,” says Terry – full-height windows afford panoramic lake views from just about anywhere on the main floor. The upper-level master ensuite has a freestanding tub below a window that overlooks the waterfront. Terry is an artist who loves capturing the lake on canvas, in all its moods. BEFORE
house, including the dining room and above the living room fireplace. The Taylor's purchased the Port Franks property in 1998. There was a small house, which was badly in need of upgrading. But when a local handyman they hired to help with the job passed away, they turned to Aylmerbased Lockington Homes. The existing structure was torn down and a new one-storey home was built using ICF (insulated concrete forms) for high-energy efficiency, a specialty of this builder.
ABOVE AND LEFT The original butcher block prep island, which Rob loves, was joined by an oversized solid surface island to provide a gathering spot when the couple entertains.
That served them well as a holiday and weekend get-away. Twenty years later, when they retired and sold their London home, they planned to spend more time at the lake but realized they needed more space. So, they contracted Wasko Developments, from London, to undertake a major renovation. This would add a second storey and enlarge the main level to include a new dining room and sunroom. They also wanted to update the kitchen and living room. “One of the main goals in this
renovation was to maintain the feel and shape of the original house,” Terry says. “We liked its design and features, and we wanted to work with those and build on them.” This meant retaining components such as outside frame beams shaped like fish, which were incorporated in the outside framework around the house and in railings. In the larger and enhanced kitchen another feature brought from the original house is a small island with a butcher block top. September/October 2021 Lifestyle 13
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT There is a cozy reading bench, with storage beneath, in the kitchen. • The Taylors – with assistance from the pros – designed and built this unique chandelier in the dining room. • Plenty of storage is provided in attractive spaces. • Admiration for the lake and its many components is an oft-repeated theme in the home. • Indoors and out, lake views are available to sooth the soul. A NATURAL STEP RIVERSTONE OFFERS A GREEN OPTION FOR RETIREMENT LIVING By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

est 5, Sifton’s poweredby-the-sun community, is welcoming a new milestone with the launch of the Riverstone retiree apartment complex. “We’re very excited and proud of this project,” says Sylvie Lucas, Sifton’s vice president, retirement living. “It’s unique and catered to the lifestyles of the retiree demographic. “We’ve taken attention to detail based on our experience with other senior living

buildings, with things from a structural perspective like spacing and lighting, as well as underground parking and security.” Lucas adds that including features like concierge service and bi-weekly housekeeping in the rent sets Riverstone apart. Also making it special are the rooftop Skylight restaurant, On The Rocks bar and an outdoor patio overlooking a green roof. In addition to supporting West 5’s sustainability culture, she says the green roof is “a great feature from an aesthetic point of view, quite lovely and lush.” A future

rooftop garden is also planned, which will facilitate growing herbs and vegetables for the kitchen, enhancing a menu focused on local fare being showcased by the executive chef. Lucas says the views from the eighth-floor rooftop – natural vistas including Kains Woods and Riverbend Park – are breathtaking. “They’re gorgeous. I’ve had the opportunity to view them through all seasons. In the fall, it’s really quite spectacular.” Riverstone residents can also enjoy the bonus of having a number of complimentary meals at the restaurant each month. The 113 one- and two-bedroom suites, some with dens, range from 650 to 1,250 square feet, with soaring ceilings. The décor reflects the surrounding countryside: wood, stone and natural finishes. These include wood-grain kitchen cabinetry complemented by quartz countertops. The natural colour palette is emphasized in the floor with walnut wood grain vinyl plank and neutral ceramic tile flooring. Walk-in showers with moulded seating are an additional convenience. Each unit has a private balcony or patio, with oversized terrace doors flooding the open-concept interiors with natural light. of-the-art SMART communities, solar-powered and 100 per cent energy efficient - Riverstone incorporates numerous green elements. These include solar panels, provision for electric vehicle chargers, ENERGY STAR appliances, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, custom LED lighting, keyless suite access and composting/recycling programs. “We’re quite proud of the fact that we’re the first neighbourhood powered by the sun in Ontario, and I love that we’re able to offer our retiree community an option to live here,” Lucas says. Other building amenities include a first-floor fitness studio, fireplace lounge with a full kitchen and adjacent games room. Leisure activities, events
and social clubs are planned. Fostering community spirit by relationship building is an important factor, Lucas maintains. “As people move in, they’ll get to know the family within the community. So, there’s always someone for support.” Riverstone is truly a community within a community, she says. “Our tenants will have a broad range of services to enhance their lifestyle under one roof and within the West 5 community.” The neighbourhood encompasses a growing variety of personal and commercial resources, such as retail shops and medical services. Residents will be able to access many businesses in the area: spas, a yoga studio, cosmetic
clinic, animal clinic and a micro-pub. “It’s good for our retiree clientele to have so much within the community. If there’s transportation or weather challenges, everything they might need is just footsteps away,” says Lucas. The community is easily accessible to major highways and downtown London. It is also surrounded by nature with walking trails. Kains Woods is at the doorstep; Sifton Bog just up the road, as well as nearby golf courses and parklands. "So, for those who love an active lifestyle or those who want to get into one now that they are retired and have more time, there are plenty of opportunities," Lucas says. n

leaves tumble to the ground and morning frost greets us, it is time to swap out our shorts for jeans and tank tops for denim button-down shirts.
Heavier versions of this ever-popular fabric are made for the fall, when cooler temperatures enable us to layer a pair of jeans or a denim skirt with a sweater – topped off with a denim jacket thrown over the shoulders. There are different styles of denim jeans to suit all body types, regardless of age or gender, that can be paired with virtually anything. You can easily dress up or dress down a pair of denim jeans. This autumn, 1970s-inspired trends – bootcut and wide-leg jeans – are back and here to stay. Additionally, this season we will be teleporting back to the 90s to reunite with Friends favourite Monica Geller’s straight leg denim jeans. These trends – along with newer, more relaxed versions, like skater and baggy jeans – are meant to give us style in comfort. We can expect the silhouettes to appear in both light wash blue and faded black, as they make their way down Gucci and Versace runways and onto the shelves of local retailers. Given denim’s durability and versatility, garments made with this fabric have a decades-long lifespan. It is being embraced as a sustainable fabric by those who reject fast fashion habits. Favourite denim garments can be passed down from generation to generation, which makes them timeless pieces with sentimental value. It is time to dust off that pair of jeans buried in the back of your closet and pair it with a favourite t-shirt, sparkly sweater or silk blouse to let them live another day.

o other garment is so universal that it is worn by people worldwide, from infancy to elder years. You have to love jeans for their versatility – good for almost any occasion – that range in price from $1 when sold in a thrift store or yard sale to $250,000 for the most expensive pair to be sold. Serving as currency, they were sometimes traded behind the Iron Curtain when these desirable western garments were scarce during the Cold War era. They’ve been worn by everyone from miners to hippies and punkers to Presidents. It all started during the California Gold Rush when merchant Levi Strauss sold indigo-coloured cloth to Jacob Davis, a tailor who made the soon-to-be-trademarked pants more durable by using gromets as fasteners. The ever-popular fly-button Levi’s 501 style was patented in 1853 but when that patent expired in 1890, many others who are now almost as famous as the originator, jumped into the market, like Osh Kosh and Wrangler. Because of their comfort and durability, they were adapted as work wear by miners, lumberjacks, railroad workers, farmers and ranchers. Movie cowboys, like John Wayne, were sporting them on screen and spreading their fame. Female stars – Ginger Rogers and Carol Lombard – wore them in publicity photos, raising the

When Marlon Brando and James Dean donned them in movies, jeans became the wardrobe item of choice for the counterculture movement of the 1950s and 60s. Seen on legs strolling hippie strongholds, like Haight and Ashbury, flower children and rockers made them a must-have item for teens. But jeans moved to the other side of the tracks in the 1970s, when haute couture designers Gloria Vanderbilt and Calvin Klein started producing high-fashion versions. Every U.S. President since Jimmy Carter has been photographed wearing jeans. Though the name for our favourite fabric is derived from European roots – Serge de Nimes, the French town that claims the fame of originating denim – jeans have a proud North American heritage that has spread across the world and can be seen on the legs and backs of people in nearly every country. Jeans and related garments have undergone many changes over the years, as cut and colours have adapted to the times. No other type of fashion enjoys such universal love.

A sad cycle
“If we don’t have a healthy, secure attachment to caregivers in childhood, then we can get stuck in an unhealthy attachment.” DR. ANNE DRANITSARIS, PH.D.
THE EMOTIONAL TOLL OF CODEPENDENCE
By Jill Ellis-Worthington
A
tween two people, especially when one partner relies emotionally on supporting and caring for the other partner. (dictionary.com)
Most people feel like they suffer from one or more of the above feelings from time to time, but if these feelings become overwhelming it could signal that you might be in a codependent relationship. This doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship. It could be a parent-child relationship, a sibling relationship or those with friends or co-workers.
According to a private practice therapist in Toronto, Dr. Anne Dranitsaris, Ph.D., it is about human attachment and how we bond. “If we don’t have a healthy, secure attachment to caregivers in childhood, then we can get stuck in an unhealthy attachment.” She says that these could be one of three styles of attachment that can define your behaviour: anxious, avoidant and chaotic.
WHAT DOES THE TERM CODEPENDENCY MEAN?
• ANXIOUS ATTACHMENT

HOW DOES ONE BECOME CODEPENDENT?
The minute a relationship is formed,
the codependent becomes anxious about it and will start thinking “will he/she love me if I don’t behave ‘right’?” The codependent gives the other person more authority over his/her activities than he/she has. • AVOIDANT ATTACHMENT The codependent doesn’t form relationships. But if he/she does have a relationship, he/she acts solo. For instance, this could define a person who is often described as a ‘player’ or someone who is an emotionally absent parent, who does not engage with a partner or children. • CHAOTIC ATTACHMENT This codependent frequently picks fights with partners. He/she will pull the partner close and all will be fine for a while but then will get emo- September/October 2021 Lifestyle 35

tional and cause a fight, thus pushing the partner away. This can be a very volatile situation. Dranitsaris adds that all codependent relationships have a dominant partner and a submissive one, each of whom feeds the other’s emotional needs in unhealthy ways. “When we have an inflated sense of entitlement or a deflated sense of entitlement, and when we feel like we aren’t enough, we look for someone else to fill us up.” She has written a book entitled Power Past the Imposter Syndrome and states that there is often a crossover between imposter syndrome and codependence because they come out of the same developmental delay. Mary Rodenhurst, a London-based social worker-therapist, agrees. “There are emotional traits from childhood that could lead to issues with codependence.” This can evidence itself with the codependent displaying ‘learned helplessness.’ The family of origin had a lot of dependence issues, leaving the person vulnerable to be manipulated (a doormat) or being a manipulator (a narcissist). If the child was largely ignored because mom and dad were distracted from parent-
ing by work or their own addictions (or being an enabler), this could lead to the codependent being a doormat. Conversely, if the codependent was ‘the centre of everyone’s universe,’ he/she could display narcissistic tendencies and need constant reinforcement. “It can get really complex and have many layers,” says Rodenhurst. Dan R. is vice-chair of CODA (Co-dependents Anonymous Canada) and a recovering codependent. He recognized that he was a codependent 11 years ago through another 12-step group and joined CODA, as well. “I was blaming everyone else for my problems; it was everyone’s fault. I was trying to fix them because it was their fault. I was controlling and didn’t like being told what to do.” CODA is a 12-step program with approximately 100 groups across Canada. Anonymity is part of the code of conduct in these groups, so Dan R. asks that his last name not be used. Like many codependents, Dan R. was raised in a family where one parent was substance-addicted and the other was an enabler.
Mindfulness is described as being conscious of your behaviours at the moment. Dranitsaris explains that noticing “when your mind and your body are in different time zones and retraining the brain” is an important step in recovery.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SIGNS THAT ONE IS CODEPENDENT? Both Dranitsaris and Rodenhurst point to recognizing self-soothing rituals to help decide whether codependence could be an issue for an individual. Think about these: if another person’s opinion of you is more important than your own; if you feel that you cannot say no to anyone and are a people pleaser; if you are afraid to be alone and are in serial relationships that do not work out. Rodenhurst says that when someone who could be described as “a shell of a person” comes to her for therapy, she sees that as a sign. “Their self-esteem has just bottomed out. They have nothing left.” If he/she comes in to get help to ‘fix the relationship,’ then that is often a sign that he/she is on the other end of the codependence spectrum. He/she is trying to fix others, instead of looking inward. Dan R. agrees that self-soothing behaviours like working 12 hours a day to impress your boss crosses the line. “When having acclaim and approval are necessary
to feel good about yourself – that’s a sign.” Dan R. says that having expectations of other people is a way of controlling them and therefore a sign. “I may ask but I expect them to say yes. If they say no, then I’m setting myself up to be hurt.” He adds that this situation can escalate and become volatile. WHAT CAN ONE DO TO END THE CYCLE? Dranitsaris advises: Learn to say no. You will have to learn to tolerate feelings of anxiety and guilt when you do. Mindfulness is described as being conscious of your behaviours at the moment. Dranitsaris explains that noticing “when your mind and your body are in different time zones and retraining the brain” is an important step in recovery. You shouldn’t be in one place while your mind is thinking about what your partner is doing or thinking or anticipating how you can help or please him/her. She also advises setting a mindful intention every morning to stay on your own agenda, and not let someone else’s

dominate your day. Journaling is also helpful, so you can see repeated patterns and learn what you’re writing about every day, she adds. This can reveal your ‘story’ of how you became codependent. Dan R. says that setting boundaries is an important part of his recovery. "In recovery, I've learned that a boundary is letting someone know about something that is happening that I'm not comfortable with." Learn to make decisions on your own, but start small, advises Rodenhurst. Learn to set limits and boundaries for your relationships; overcome your fear of being alone – these are all activities that will lead to recovery. “Being more independent and not relying on your partner for approval will help. Being more self-reliant will help build your self-esteem.” Learning to move past codependence is important for your own development, as well as your children and partner. You probably became codependent because of behaviours demonstrated in your family of origin, but you can stop this sad cycle before you pass it on to your own kids. n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION CODA’s website offers resources to help in the journey. LOCKED-DOWN HOMEOWNERS OPTING FOR HOME THEATRES OVER TRAVEL By Clare Dear
lthough the COVID pandemic has crippled many businesses, one sector that is experiencing a boom is home renovation. With most of us being locked down in our homes for so long, the nest eggs some folks had put away for travel and vacations are now being redirected to home upgrades, including the addition of big-screen TVs and audio systems.
40 Lifestyle September/October 2021
“Because of COVID, people haven’t been travelling, they haven’t been eating out, so they’re spending a money on theatre rooms,” says Justin Andrews, president of HTAV Inc., a London- based home theatre and audio/video company that specializes in custom home theatre design and installation. His company provides free in-home consultations to help guide homeowners through the entire theatre selection process.

magazine Andrews answers the most frequently asked questions about home entertainment systems.
What size of TV do you recommend? Generally, I come from the school of “there’s no such thing as too big,” unless you’re sitting substantially close to the screen. The resolution is so sharp nowadays, but I would say if the TV is 60 inches or smaller you can be within six feet of the screen. You want to be eight feet back for a 75-inch screen.
What’s the best location in a room for a TV? It’s such a vague question because I’m not there, so I usually do a consultation and come on site. Based on the room, I’ll recommend where the TV should go and where the sound system works best. If you’re going to put the TV above a fireplace, you don’t want the TV to hang past the fireplace – it looks silly. You want to frame the wall that the fireplace is sitting on.
Is it difficult to add a surround system? If a room is already finished, it’s hard to do because you need wiring in certain places. You need three front speakers, a minimum of two surround speakers and a subwoofer. Getting wires to those locations poses a lot of challenges in a room that’s already finished, so usually the best solution ends up being a good quality sound bar. n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION HTAV INC. The Ridge At Byron A COMMUNITY OF SINGLE-FAMILY CONDOMINIUMS
Peace, tranquility and privacy in one of London’s most scenic locations is what homebuyers will discover at The Ridge At Byron. This gated community of 44 single-family condominium homes is set on an elevated ridge in London’s west end, overlooking Warbler Woods and the city centre. Residents enjoy a central landscaped park, a treed centre boulevard on a divided street and many other landscaped open spaces. “With features such as large lots, elaborate landscaping, a controlled gated entrance and quality interior finishes, we’re confident this neighbourhood is setting the standard for luxury detached condominium homes in London,” says developer Dennis Dalton. “All our homes feature distinctive stone, stucco and brick exteriors, inviting double front doors and high vaulted or coffered ceilings. Oversized windows allow for spectacular light on the interiors.” The furnished model home, The Fairmont, has a 2,096-square-foot main floor, and is one of 10 home designs available for buyers. The model is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends. A spacious angled entrance foyer, with a 10-foot ceiling, accesses a front dining room and the open-concept great room, kitchen and breakfast area. Kitchen cabinetry by GCW Custom Kitchens is complemented by granite countertops. The great room, with a 12-foot ceiling, includes a gas fireplace in a choice of traditional or contemporary styles. A wall of windows with terrace doors opens to a covered deck, with glass railing. This extends the living space for al fresco entertaining. Double doors lead from the great room to an expansive master retreat with dual walk-in closets and a large ensuite bathroom. The latter features a double vanity, freestanding tub and ceramic tile shower, as well as heated tile floors. The main level also includes a second bedroom or study/den, the main bathroom
and a back hall and laundry with entry from the oversized double-car garage. A curved oak staircase from the great room accesses a finished recreation room on the lower level. Fully sodded lawns and landscaped front gardens welcome guests. Driveways feature high-quality pavers with edge restraint. “The Ridge At Byron offers carefree living with the ultimate private address,” Dalton says, advising buyers to “select your lot before it’s too late to become part of our prestigious community.” n

‘rustic chic’ ambiance is showcased in a new Oke Woodsmith Building Systems home in Grand Bend, says company president Randall Oke. The one-storey ranch house, with a two-bedroom loft and lower-level walk-out backing onto the Old Ausable River, mixes sophisticated features with cottage-style comfort, Oke says. Rustic elements include interior wood beams, painted and stained wood ceilings, as well as wormy maple cabinetry and distressed maple engineered hardwood floors. Indoor and outdoor stone fireplaces add to the relaxed vibe. juxtaposed with black-framed windows. It is further emphasized by the quartz counters and a lower-level bar, flanked by a seven-by-six-foot glassed-encased wine cellar. The main floor has an open-concept kitchen, dining room and great room. Each area is defined by style of ceiling. “We create tray ceilings that give separations without walls,” says Oke. This level includes the master suite with a cathedral ceiling, spacious walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom. The latter features a large shower and free-standing tub. “Everything’s designed so the occupants can live on the main floor,” Oke says. The secondary entrance from the garage accesses a mudroom, the laundry area and a powder room. This also allows entry to the two-bedroom loft above the three-car garage.
In addition to the bar, the lower level incorporates a games/recreation area and family room. The fourth bedroom and another bathroom also reside on this level. French doors on either side of the fireplace and a patio door from the recreation area open to a covered patio beneath the main floor deck. Beyond it is a patio with a wood-burning fire pit. The upper balcony has a covered area with a fan and outdoor fireplace, ideal for entertaining no matter the weather. The landscaping incorporates stone steps framed by armor stone and walkways from the road that wrap around the home. These are a mix of paving stone with exposed aggregate concrete that Oke says resembles gravel paths and provides variety.
ABOVE Rustic Chic combines the most popular features of Oke Woodsmith Building Systems custom homes: timber frame entrance, cathedral ceilings, oversized windows, large kitchen islands and outdoor entertainment spaces. RIGHT The kitchen and dining room are visually defined by the coffered ceiling. This kind of attention to detail is appreciated by their customers year after year.

Read more about what some of EVE Park’s latest buyers are saying about the new development.
VICTOR & EIREN Local young professionals, Victor and Eiren, were one of the first couples to jump on the opportunity to secure a unit at EVE Park.
“”
“EVE Park is setting a new standard for what a condominium development can be,” says Victor. “We’ll have the simplicity of condo living, the conveniences of urban living, and the added benefit of waking up to nature in your backyard, as opposed to concrete buildings. Those are the things that will be keeping us here long-term.” – Victor
The pair has always enjoyed the benefits of condominium living, but when they learned about EVE Park – a new net-zero community being developed in a city they already call home – it became clear that this innovative development would provide all that they loved about the condo lifestyle, and more. Victor is an avid cyclist, who together with his girlfriend, Eiren, enjoys outdoor activities and discovering new shops and restaurants. Five minutes away from fly fishing in the Thames River, and five minutes away from the urban centre, buying their new home at EVE Park was an easy decision as it uniquely addressed every facet of their lifestyle. Also important to the couple, EVE Park is part of a larger project in West Five that fully embraces the future of electrification and green energy. As a local realtor who keeps his finger on the pulse of the realty market, Victor says from technology to aesthetics to culture, West Five is quickly becoming the most desirable place to be in London.
SARAH & FAMILY Currently living in Riverbend with their 14- and 10-year-old daughters, Sarah and her husband bought at EVE Park knowing how wonderfully the area could support family life. “Having lived in the area, we have seen the growth that’s been happening here,” says Sarah. “From farmer’s markets to bike paths and the dog-walking paths, to a bandshell amphitheater that plans to host live music in the summer, there are a lot of family-friendly things happening around EVE Park.” Beyond the unparalleled neighbouring amenities that Sarah and her husband valued first and foremost, they were blown away by the homes themselves. “The units are very family friendly,” says Sarah. “There are two and three bedroom units available that are very spacious, very well laid out and beautifully designed. I also like that there is a single entry. It’s always nice to know that your front door leads into your unit and that you don’t have to share common spaces.” In addition to the elements inside and outside that could support family life, Sarah is particularly excited about the seamless integration of technology that reduces a family’s carbon footprint. “I’m not technologically inclined by any means, but the whole project from start to finish has been incredibly well thought out,” says Sarah. “You don’t even realize that your shower is consuming 60 per cent less water than a regular shower, because you’re just showering. You can just live here and use the things that you would regularly use – in a regular way – and consume substantially less. That’s all been integrated for you ahead of time.”
“”
“EVE Park has really thought about a million details. They have thought about things that I never would have thought about, but since they did, it makes me very excited.” – Sarah

HEAD TO THE BEND TO CHECK OUT THE COTTAGE CAFÉ
T
he Cottage Café is a dream come true – for owner Sharon Coleman and for patrons who snap up croissants, scones and cinnamon buns before they’re sold out. In a matter of months, the Grand Bend riverfront café has succeeded beyond Coleman’s highest hopes. The combination of mouth-watering wares and water views made it an instant hit with locals and visitors alike. Born in England, Coleman always wanted a tearoom. She and her husband Doug purchased the building in July 2020, intending to rent the existing restaurant. Due to the pandemic, she said they had no takers. When she asked her husband about realizing her dream, his response was, “It’s all yours.” She converted the former bar into a coffee barista station and remodeled the space with a welcoming cottage atmosphere. A patio plus eat-in space, on two levels, provides seating for 40 inside.
“We don’t want people to feel rushed. They can come have a coffee or breakfast or lunch, sit and relax and watch the boats go by,” Coleman explains. It’s become a regular haunt for many. “There are a lot of local people, and we’re getting to know them by name. The holiday people come from all over. People are very positive. They can sit and chill. Regulars come in for coffee and a slice of lemon poppy seed cake. It’s a happy place.”
Cinnamon buns and scones are top favourites, followed by croissants and brownies. The breakfast boat consists of a butter croissant, crispy bacon, egg, mixed peppers and cheddar. Yogurt parfaits filled with seasonal fruit and house-made granola, quiche, salads and charcuterie boards are available, along with sandwiches for lunch. The “Dougie” sandwich is named for Coleman’s husband, “a big roast beef guy.” Coleman says she couldn’t do it alone and having her daughter Hailey working alongside is ideal. Daughters Erin and Sarah also work some days. “It’s more than I ever dreamed. I never thought it would take off like this. I am having fun doing it.” “People love our baked products. Sometimes by noon we are sold out. Everything is baked here every day. We have two bakers, amazing ladies, who work all day. We have amazing staff. It’s fallen into place,” says Coleman. “It’s my dream.” n

RENEWED ENERGY
village
IN WORTLEY VILLAGE At the centre of London is its jewel, a little
corner of the city that is an oasis of friendliness set against a quaint backdrop. One of the sources of this renewed energy is Ashley Satchell, owner of Featherfields, who is opening a second location in the Village at 173 Wortley Road. In 2019, she took over the original location in Hyde Park. Satchell wants to serve the widening demographic of bird and nature lovers in this larger space and to expand offerings of non-GMO human-grade birdseeds, as well as other popular bird-related items, like houses and feeders. Shoppers visit seeking unique gift items, so Satchell plans to expand on the nature-themed items that fulfill these wish lists. Pieces from Canadian artists and Canadian-produced décor items, as well as nature-themed cards will be more widely available at the new location. Satchell is planning more educational workshops for both kids and adults. She will be expanding the book section, as well. “We will have a much larger kids’ section, with educational materials for children to learn about nature and birding. Another new Village resident is Millennium Construction. Owner Mark Vaandering purchased 145 Wortley Road with his husband; he and business partner Jeff Bruinsma moved this locally renowned building and renovation company’s offices there in March of last year. They renovated the first floor and now it is a “better space for working with clients,” and showing off their fine work. The building has seven tenants, the newest of which is Antoinette’s, which opened at the end of August. Owner Tracy White explains that this shop “educates and empowers women through 10 VIP experiences.” These include physical activities like belly or pole dancing or more cerebral ones like star gazing at the observatory. “We live in a world where we have a lot of ‘stuff,’ but what we really need are experiences that enrich our lives,” says White. She takes care of everything, so you can enjoy each experience.
A CHARMING
Featherfields A long-time fixture in the Village, Curiosities Gift Shop, still offers a curated selection of fashions, along with jewelry, home decor and baby items. Owner Jocelyn King takes pride in promoting local and Canadian artists and manufacturers among her offers. Next door is MacKinlay Mercantile. Because her offerings are so unique, owner Cindy MacKinlay welcomes requests to source goods not available in the regular inventory. She delivers with an 80 per cent success rate, taking pride in being able to search out “some really odd requests. Down the street is another long-time Village retailer – Heaven Scent. Owner Christine Richards has responded to heightened pandemic-related stress levels by offering personalized beauty and health services (facials and allergy testing). She is excited to soon be able to offer live workshops and courses. These retailers have boosted their online presence and will continue to offer curb-side pickup and delivery, so check out their websites. (Listed at right). On the corner, Dave Ledger has been the pharmacist/owner of the Wortley Village Pharmasave since 2007. An important fixture in the wellness world, the pandemic boosted sales of toilet paper, cleaners and sanitizers, but it was mostly business as usual. Ledger is looking forward to being able to give more flu shots this year, an effort that usually starts in October. Conversely, COVID-19 greatly affected how one Old South resident operates. Dentist Dr. Penny Thornton and her staff wear more PPE and see fewer patients because of enhanced measures. Thornton also made changes to the HVAC system and has had air purifiers installed in treatment rooms. Since her office is in a charming building on Carfrae Crescent across from Turner Drugs, she already had divided rooms, so she didn’t have to renovate extensively like many others in the field. Whatever your shopping or personal need, Wortley Village is the place to go to feel renewed energy. n
ABOVE As one of the Village's newest residents, Featherfields is bringing fresh energy and expanding its stock in the new location.

2022 Porsche Macan Porsche’s compact SUV gets a power boost Porsche has given its compact SUV, the Macan, significant upgrades for 2022, including increased performance. In fact, all three Macan models have significantly more power than their predecessors. The entry-level Macan gains 13 horsepower with its new 2.0-litre four-cylinder, making it capable of sprinting to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (with the Sport Chrono package) and reaching a top speed of 232 km/h. The mid-range Macan S has swapped out the previous model’s 3.0-litre engine for the 2.9-litre twin turbo V6 formerly offered in the GTS model. Peter Crunican (above) and his brothers Alf and Philip are pleased that customers appreciate their produce and the locally-sourced products they carry.
Thriving, not just surviving CUSTOMER SUPPORT DELIVERS COVID SUCCESS STORY By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
A
s the folks at Crunican Orchards bring in fall crops of apples, pumpkins and squash – some destined for customers’ Thanksgiving dinner tables – they are giving thanks themselves for those customers. The support they received over the months of pandemic restrictions helped them survive and even thrive, says Philip Crunican, who, with brothers Peter and Alf, operate the four-generation family farm and market on Richmond Street North, near Elginfield. “In spite of COVID, we’ve had one of our busiest years ever,” he says. Being a food retailer, the store was able to stay open, shutting down for just a month in the spring of 2020 before moving to curbside pick-up and then in-store shopping with limited capacity. But customer support was crucial to
their success story. “We had tremendous support from the community, buying local and wanting local produce,” Crunican says. In addition to its 15 varieties of mainstay apples - including Macintosh, Empire, Ida Red, Delicious, Fuji, Mutsu, Ambrosia and the ever-popular Honeycrisp, which have been grown in its orchards for more than a century – the market also sources fruit, such as peaches and plums, from growers in the Chatham area. But this year consumers were also on the lookout for something different, products not readily available in the large chain stores. Crunican proved itself the go-to location. For more than four decades, the market store has carried a wide variety of products from enterprises across the region. These include honey, jams,
pasta, cheese, dried beans and grains, maple syrup and related items, and, of course, apple products and cider. “We’ve always supported local businesses,” Crunican says. This year it worked for both the market and the suppliers. “People found us and had the time to come and see us. And, things take off that you hadn’t anticipated.” He cites examples like Stonetown Artisan Cheese from St. Mary’s, crafted in the tradition of the Swiss Alps. Organic muffin, cookie and pancake mixes from Grainstorm Heritage Baking in Huron County were also popular among the locally sourced products. “It set us up in a way we had no idea that it would. It was very surprising and welcome.” n

ABOVE Matt Simpson, manager of the London location, is the third generation of his family to helm Simpson’s Fence. Other locations include Chatham and Tecumseh.
Fencing with finesse LOCAL COMPANY OFFERS A WIDE VARIETY OF ENCLOSURES By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
W
ith more than 70 years of experience with enclosing properties, from residential lawns to industrial sites, there’s little in fence installation that Simpson’s Fence hasn’t encountered. It’s this expertise that has enabled the company to grow from “one little hardware store on the river in Chatham” to one of the largest fence installers in Southwestern Ontario, says Matt Simpson, London manager and third generation member of the family business. Founded by his grandfather, John Simpson, in 1948, the company has grown to include three locations in London, Chatham and Tecumseh (just east of Windsor). “If you have a problem, we’ve probably seen it and that experience is often our biggest asset,” says Matt. Another asset, he says, is the sale of
fencing installation materials and tools. “In this area, as far as I know, we’re the only one who stocks materials for contractors, landscapers and do-it-yourself homeowners. We’ll have odd parts that you’re not going to get at the big box stores and items that help solve problems.” Simpson’s also sells free-standing kits, in various sizes, for enclosures like dog runs and kennels, that can be quickly and easily assembled. The company’s clientele ranges from large commercial and industrial sites to residential properties, primarily using chain link, vinyl and ornamental wrought iron fencing. This also often includes automation technology, such as access control for commercial customers and power gates for homeowners. Ornamental iron is increasingly used
for residential customers, Simpson says. “In the last 15 or 20 years, with new home construction, it has become the popular thing.” As an economical option, chain link is still often the go-to material, particularly for larger yards, he says. “In those cases,” he adds, “we can do combinations, with ornamental in the front, where it’s more visible, mixed with black chain link along the sides and back.” While the company carries chain link in various colours, including green, brown and white, black is the most common preference. According to Simpson, there are also some good options for vinyl fencing, which is newer in the market and offers advantages of being long-lasting, weather-resistant and maintenance-free. n

bizlife FALL COLOURS are available at Maria Bikas Salon. Sophisticated techniques – like using metallics, bayalage and layering tones – will warm up winter hair styles.
Fall hair colours turning heads AT MARIA BIKAS SALON By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
O
ne sign that we’ve emerged from an extended pandemic lockdown is turning heads – women’s heads as they display a cornucopia of the latest styles and colours for autumn. “It’s exciting. Everybody wants colour, and there’s so much colour to be had,” says Maria Bikas, owner of London’s Maria Bikas Salon. From fancy ash blonde with golden honey highlights to chocolate and toffee browns, there is something for every taste among autumn 2021 trends. Chocolate cinnamon, with caramel cocoa and toffee highlights, is a premiere option for brunettes. Bikas says that adding these are inspired by the French bayalage collection of highlights, hand-painted onto the hair to create a soft and natural gradation of lightness.
Red bayalage copper and rose gold are also trending this season. “I also love the toasted coconut, a smooth milky cream with soft chocolate,” Bikas says. According to this salon owner, bronde, which is a blend of brown and blonde, is a popular choice for blondes. Creamy blonde creates a warmer expression for colder days. Bronze highlights, using metallic shades, are a perfect match for light brown hair. Burgundy shades “fit perfectly on almost anyone,” she says. Another “super hot” trend right now, she adds, is “bright hair,” with neon pinks and greens. For clients who are growing out their hair colours, Maria Bikas has support as well. She calls it “sprinkle, sparkle and marbleize.”
“We touch up the root, to marbleize and blend with the growing out colour. It balances it.” While salon clients are getting beautified with the latest colours and styles, Bikas is also giving back with a community collaboration called Beauty With A Purpose. The business has joined forces with Merrymount Family Support and Crisis Centre, an organization that provides crisis, respite and mental health services for children in London/Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties, through a donation program. For every online purchase of Balmain Couture hair products, the salon donates $1 to Merrymount. There is also a link on the website for clients to donate on their own. “It’s spreading our love through your hair, one head at a time,” Bikas says. n
