EDITOR’S note BUILDING ORIGINAL HOMES FOR ORIGINAL PEOPLE We’ll make your next home as original as you are Why settle for a run-of-the-mill custom home when you can have an entirely original one? With a planning process that starts with nothing more than your dreams and a blank sheet of paper, you can be sure your Riverstone Original Home will be every bit as unique and remarkable as you are. We’ve been building original homes for well over 20 years now,

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” ALBERT CAMUS

W

ith spring seeming to come later each year and summer holding off until July this year, in southwestern Ontario we are fortunate to welcome autumn’s warm days, sometimes referred to as Sumtember. The merging of two wonderful things: warm days that gently take us into a season of colour and the hunger for positive change. Warm days and cool nights give us that halcyon feeling of not-quite-summer but not ready for full fall and its inevitable flight into winter. Sumtember allows us feel like we can deny that the cold, dark days are coming. Many people from our area love winter and its pristine beauty. They welcome the cooler days after summer’s blast. Those are the ones that cherish the annual ‘pumpkin everything’ that comes as soon as September is on the horizon.

Lara Leitch, Photo Perfect – London

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Since I’m a summer person, a lover of sand and sun, who tries to take a positive perspective I think of the good things about our annual slide into the snow time. The deepening colours of the city’s forest canopy is a highlight. Driving around town to see the ever more intricate displays of Halloween decorations in front of homes is a lot of fun. And football season – can’t forget that one. We are blessed to live between two of the great lakes, so taking time out of your busy schedule to enjoy an autumn walk on the beach is worth doing. Especially now that families who flock there in summer are busy with school and you can enjoy some seaside serenity. See our story on page 15 to see some ideas for enjoying colourful, peaceful autumn getaways with your special someone to have more of these reflective moments. It’s the same feeling of renewal we get on January 1 or the first day of spring: nature is telling us that it’s time for taking stock, taking time to reflect and taking charge. This is one reason I love September. Autumn really is a second spring and a time for physical and metaphysical fall cleaning. It’s time to sort through some of summer’s detritus and dust off the Halloween decorations. Time enjoy the cornucopia of life as we move into a new phase of renewal. Now where did I put those pumpkin lights?

3Cs BUYING GUIDE: COLOUR, CABINETS & COUNTERTOPS

COLOUR Whatever you prefer — neutrals, bold tones or something in between — incorporating colour is easy. Choose a jewel-toned backsplash tile, a contrasting accent wall, or like the owners of this London home did, add boldly-coloured artwork and accent pieces

CABINETS Strive for a design that optimizes storage while providing visual interest. The wood grain island has a furniture-like appeal, with ample storage accessed through doors on the seating side. Sleek, white cabinets create textural contrast with their high-lustre finish

COUNTERTOPS Hard surface countertops complete a kitchen design. Durability, maintenance needs and aesthetics are all criteria worth evaluating. Here the owners chose Brittanicca Gold™ by Cambria® for their counter surfaces and as a backdrop for their gas cook top

FOR TWO GREAT PEOPLE ON ONE GREAT GETAWAY

1 (and a bit) hours away Not far down the road is underappreciated Leamington. This agri-centric area has so much to offer visitors: lake views, beaches, a national park, wineries, international food and a lively arts scene. Don’t forget to throw your bikes into the back of the vehicle and pack a lunch, as there are 200 kilometres of trails, including a path that takes riders out to Point Pelee National Park to see the autumn bird and butterfly migrations. Maximize your fun on the EPIC Wine Trail by hopping on board a Windsor Eats tour with Adriano Ciotoli and riding bikes between wineries. On some Friday evenings in the summer and fall, the Mill Street Market takes place downtown and features local vendors. Leamington’s strong international population ensures that foreign food delights are plentiful. Down-to-earth El Comal is a great example. Hungry diners enter through the backdoor of what looks like a residence, into the kitchen and out to the covered back patio to consume South American treats, like pupusas and tamales. More upscale dining options also 16 Lifestyle September/October 2019

feature locally-sourced goodies, like Thirteen on the Inn. It is right next to the waterfront so take an after-dinner stroll to the marina or ferry launch to enjoy the evening breezes. If the kids or grandkids are tagging along for this weekend getaway, a trip to Thiessen Orchards is a great idea. Apple picking, a haunted barn, a corn maze and play areas will entertain for hours. The charming HoriZen Bed and Breakfast is a great choice for lodgings in Leamington. The century home is owned by Shelby and Mike Foster. He whips up a breakfast speciality each morning, like fresh Belgian waffles and Huevos rancheros. Each of the four rooms has an inspiring theme, and the wide porch is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine from one of the local vineyards.

2 (and a bit) hours away Ann Arbor, Michigan is more than a Detroit suburb; it’s a distinct community near Motown but so different. Home of the University of Michigan, the lively student culture energizes adjacent downtown. It features shops

Autumn is the perfect time for a couple’s getaway. The weather is cooler for sight seeing, and kids are back in school, so venues tend to be less crowded. There are many popular places to choose from, but taking the road less travelled is a rewarding way to explore places that you may have overlooked. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Ann Arbor, Michigan provides miles of riverside biking and hiking trails. • Inglis Falls outside of Owen Sound is just one of the area’s many scenic waterfalls. • Explore Owen Sound by canoe or kayak. • Downtown Ann Arbor is alive with shops and restau rants. • Bike to and around Point Pelee National Park when visiting Leamington.

and boutiques, like Cherry Republic. (Must try: Balaton Cherry Wine.) Nearby is charming Kerrytown and it houses the Farmers Market, which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Autumn seems the perfect time to get into a Harry Potter vibe, U of M’s law quad has been called the ‘Hogwarts of the Midwest,’ and be sure to take a walk through ‘the Arb’ (Nichols Arboretum) for great views of the area. Fans of midcentury modern architecture will love this destination, as there’s a plethora of well-maintained homes built in the 1950s and ‘60s in MCM style. Take a drive through the Angell area of the city to check them out. Cyclists will appreciate the 270 kilometres of paved riverside trails in Ann Arbor. Biking through the city, on the paths, through the woods and along the Huron River will easily fill a get-fit day. After all that exercise, the dining options are just as varietal. Casual lunch options include the fun atmosphere at Frita Batidos (Cuban sandwich-inspired burgers and shakes). A stop at the iconic Zuckerman’s Deli is a must, but be warned these delicious sandwiches

All the fun

are big enough to split. For a romantic evening slowly sampling tapas and unique cocktails, Aventura is a great choice. A lovely atmosphere and small plates make this a dining experience to be shared with someone special. The Gandy Dancer, a converted train depot, has great cocktails and plenty of history.

without the stress!

3 (and a bit) hours away A small, scenic waterfront town, on the escarpment with plenty of natural beauty – sounds like a great destination. It’s Owen Sound and while you might not think of it as a vacation option, it’s an excellent choice for a weekend getaway. The hilly terrain offers hiking and biking opportunities in this Bruce Trail-adjacent area. The town is surrounded by several scenic waterfalls that you can hike to but Inglis Falls is the easiest to access by car if mobility issues are a concern. It’s a truly stunning sight and well worth the $8 parking charge. The quaint downtown houses one of the few remaining Carnegie Libraries, with signature vaulted ceilings, and next door is the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. To enjoy more displays of local art, check out the Artists’ Co-op. Walk along the harbourfront to Mudtown Station, a converted midcentury train station, to slake that hunger and thirst. This brewpub offers excellent suds, with six of their own on tap, and unique lunch entrees like tomato ricotta pie and cottage fries as big as your thumb. Strolling through Harrison Park’s trails or along the waterfront at Kelso Park is soothing but a side trip to Sauble Beach for an afternoon of walking along the beach should be on your agenda. When ready for a coffee and snack break, a stop at the charming Luscious Bakery just behind the beach is a must. Golfers will enjoy hitting the links at Cobble Beach Golf Resort, and car enthusiasts will want to visit during the Concours d’Elegance, on September 15. n

Jen had great suggestions and put together a really fun itinerary for us. We went to a couple wineries, some cute little shopping spots, had a lovely lunch and dinner. It was so much fun and relaxing to be taken care of and not have to drive around to each location.”

2019 PARADE OF

PREVIEW THIS YEAR'S OFFERINGS

INGENUITY

ON PARADE

Home transformations showcased By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

Home improvements, large and small, will take centre stage September 29 as the London Home Builders’ Association’s Renovator’s Council presents its 29th annual Parade of Renovations. “We are excited that the 2019 Parade is going to include a wide variety of outstanding home enhancement projects,” says council president Laurie Lockington-Wong, from Clear Concept Design and Build Inc. The projects on display will include everything from a kitchen transformation to a century home modernization. “The Parade is a fantastic opportunity for homeowners to interact with top renovators,” says Lockington-Wong. “They will be inspired by the creative designs, beautiful finishes and expert workmanship.” The tours will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a $10 entry fee allows access to all. Proceeds support Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU), and its Joan’s Place New Addition Campaign to develop a supportive housing program for youth, young moms and their children at risk of homelessness. 

HOMES ON PARADE 54 NORMANDY GARDENS

This main floor renovation from Brodco Construction Ltd. created a more spacious living area by opening a kitchen load-bearing wall to a rear family room with a vaulted ceiling. The updated kitchen features Maxfin (quarter-inch thick porcelain) countertops with the same material used for large format floor tile. New flooring was installed throughout. The laundry room and powder room also received facelifts.

This home was defined by walls that enclosed the rooms. From the sunken living room, to limited kitchen cabinetry, the homeowner wanted change. CCR Building and Remodeling Inc. transformed the space to make it open and inviting. They created a spacious working kitchen and installed hardwood floors throughout.

This character-filled century home was in need of modernization. CCR Building and Remodeling Inc. accomplished this while maintaining the home’s historical detail from the loft to the lower level. New amenities include an eat-in kitchen, mudroom, ensuite bathroom and sitting room.

1002 HUNT CLUB MEWS

This whole home renovation, by Clear Concept Design and Build Inc., included moving the basement staircase to provide space for a better front hall closet, larger ensuite and kitchen pantry. The new staircase was created by shrinking an existing guest bedroom walk-in closet. Partition walls were removed to generate an open-concept kitchen. Horizontal wood planks and a heated slate floor were added to the sunroom.

This cozy bungalow has been renovated by Covenant Construction to add a sense of style, softness and originality. The remodeled bathroom has a fully flat shower for accessibility. Built-ins in the master necessitated relocating the back stairs. As well, engineered flooring was installed throughout. 

This upscale 25-year-old home needed a refresh. Duo Building Limited reframed the sunken living room to match the level of the rest of the house. A new kitchen was created, with office and pantry and engineered hardwood floors were added throughout the main floor. A highlight is the two-way fireplace from living room to backyard retreat.

51 COWAN CRESCENT

This 1970s house has been given a complete revitalization by Millennium Construction and Design Inc. Upgrades to bring it up to 2019 standards include a family room, covered porch addition, windows, siding and insulation. Interior work includes custom cabinetry with granite counters, two bathrooms, plus new flooring and paint throughout. An extensive remodel has created a home suitable for today’s family and their needs.

An addition, by Riverside Construction, at the back of this Wortley Village home provides extra floor space for a large open kitchen and living room. It is perfect for entertaining. With an emphasis on retaining the old charm, character pieces such as natural oak flooring and craftsman trim were revitalized and brought back to life within this modern design. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION Film fest shines megawatt spotlight on local talent By Jill Ellis-Worthington

Growing from 26 films screened at one location in its first year to 60 films being shown at four venues in year four, the Forest City Film Festival is manifesting as the type of event that its creator Dorothy Downs envisioned. “The festival celebrates film and filmmakers with a connection to southwestern Ontario,” she explains. “Though last year’s winner was filmed in the West Bank in Israel and one of this year’s entries is from Chile, they are both connected here through the creative team.” As a teenager, Down’s son put together a film that was screened at the Raindance Film Festival but didn’t have a local venue to show his work to friends and family. She learned that

London was one of the last cities of its size to lack a film festival of this nature so she set out to correct that. With a staff of two and a volunteer team of 150, the city now celebrates local filmmakers each year, inviting them to show feature films and documentaries (long and short). Some of the 60 films on this year’s roster will be fresh from a run at the Toronto International Film Festival. The films compete for top honours in their respective categories, and this year a youth category has been added for best creative art film, best animation, best narrative and best documentary. Eighty-five five-minute works were submitted and the top 25 will be shown at the festival.

This year’s event will be held from October 23 to 27 at Wolf Performance Hall, Imagine Cinemas, Good Foundation Theatre (Fanshawe College downtown campus) and Museum London’s theatre. Downs says that having members of the creative teams at the performances, to talk to during the Q&A sessions after or at the Drewlo Director’s Lounge (across from Wolf Performance Hall) is an exciting aspect of the event. “London is an artistic town, and it’s a fun weekend with great vibrancy. You have conversations you just don’t get to participate in otherwise.” n ● FOR MORE INFORMATION FOREST CITY FILM FESTIVAL www.forestcityfilmfest.ca

more important question than the age-old “Is it art” puzzle, may be “Why do you want it?” Purchasing art as décor, as an investment, to build a collection or simply for the love of it are different motives. And, like so many things, purpose drives process. Do you want it to look good over the sofa or leave a legacy? Sandra May, owner of Skwirl Fine Art Gallery in London, says, “You have to make a decision when you first start collecting and buying art. A fine art collection has a value, both historically important and monetary value.” This type of collection is created to pass on to heirs or to a museum as a legacy. The second type of collection is one of enjoyment for the moment. It could be contemporary, consisting of emerging artists, or commercial, which suits your décor. If you decide to collect, where do

you start? The key is education: go to galleries, museums, read books. “Do your homework,” said May. “When people come to us, everybody wants to learn. Ask questions. Is it (a work) in any museums, published by a curator who is respected? Would a museum ever be interested? You can never promise anyone the value of art. What you can promise is it is part of Canadian history.” May gives an example of a 29-yearold collector who started by reading art books. “He did his homework. The books are the key to having a relationship with the artist and the work,” she said. “Understand artists and art and build a story. That is the foundation that makes them enjoy what they bought.” Art can also reveal the personalities of collectors. “Art is representative of who you are. It helps you see what you are attracted to.” For couples collecting, it can provide insights. “Art is really healthy

for relationships,” said May. “You pick it together. You enjoy it together.” She says it’s also a great way to start a relationship. “It’s so much fun. There is nothing greater than sitting with a cup of coffee and talking about art or about a museum show you just saw.” She feels that having this kind of exchange really helps two people to better understand each other. May suggests blending art into many life experiences. “Visit museums when travelling and make it part of your life.” As an investment, a fine art collection requires research, an understanding of its purpose, and an expert advisor. But as temporary keeper of a work of art, you should enjoy it. Find an artist that interests you. “We are trying to empower new collectors and seasoned collectors to buy fine art that complements them, their sensibility and their home,” said May. “Fine art is great art. It can go anywhere.” n

Beautiful choices By Jill Ellis-Worthington

SUSTAINABILITY IS TRENDING

reenwashing, a term that has come into common use in the past few years, has been applied to nearly every aspect of modern life, including the manufacture of beauty products. According to Jenise Lee, terms like clean, natural, organic and pure are often misused in the greenwashing epidemic. The CEO of PurPicks, a product review company based in Toronto, she says that consumers see a label with those terms on it and are often fooled. “If one ingredient is natural in a product it can be labelled that way,” she explains.

Making choices in skin, hair and body care products that are as good for us as they are for the planet doesn’t have to be difficult, she adds, advising to stay away from those that contain paraben or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as a good start. “Buy from small, independent stores,” she adds, “as they've personally vetted the products they carry, using them in their own lives.”

Checking products out on a peer-reviewed site, like purpicks.com, is a good way to do research on future purchases. You can also look for the following.

REFILLABLE CONTAINERS 1 Eliminating single-use plastic containers is a growing concern for many as they see the devastating effects in aquatic populations, so using refillable containers for beauty and hygiene products is a growing trend. Celebrating their first year in business in July of this year, Reimagine London has experienced exponential growth, going from a temporary popup shop to a full-time business in the former Novack’s building downtown. According to Kara Rijnen, who owns the business with her husband Heenal Rajani, Reimagine's Refillery features products for personal and household use. Customers bring in their own clean containers that are weighed empty. They fill them with desired products and then they are weighed again at check-out time, “so they are charged for the products only,” she explains. Natural, organic products from Canada are exclusively stocked in the Refillery that include shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, bubble bath and Epsom salts, face and body lotions. They also carry toothpaste, deodorant and lip balms.

London-based Jaydancin uses ingredients grown by local farmers as much as possible. When she started the company 15 years ago, after living off-grid in northern Ontario for 10 years and making creams, soaps and other products from the ingredients grown in her own organic garden, Vickie Balazs was filling the needs of a few customers. Demand for her completely natural products has grown from a small store in Sparta to the current one in Hyde Park that is 4,000 square feet. With everything produced onsite, Balazs finds that many customers are concerned about how chemicals in products can affect their health. “We work with a lot of people who have  September/October 2019

Better oils, like jojoba or coconut oils are preferable.”

SUSTAINABLE HAIR SALONS

3

Carrying exclusively naturally sourced products from L’Oréal, Studio H Artist Group is a sustainable salon. This was an effort that owner Heather Wenman began in 2007 by moving the salon to its current home on Anne Street in a warehouse that incorporates green space. The space was renovated to update its infrastructure to be more environmentally friendly. Wenman is L’Oréal’s Canadian ambassador for naturality – the term the company uses to describe two lines: Source Essentielle (hair care products) and Botanea (100 per cent herbal hair colour). This is important for Wenman personally and professionally, as she noticed negative symptoms associated with her long-standing career as a stylist using chemically-based products, as well as having lost many friends in the industry to cancer. For her own health, that of her staff, her clients and the planet, Wenman is pleased to be on the leading edge of what she feels is now a lifestyle movement and not simply a trend. “Sustainable salons are here and it’s important for wellness,” she says. n

RENOVATOR SHOWCASE

MelBarr Design Build A renovation by MelBarr Design Build has created a brand new main floor living space for a family in London’s Westmount neighbourhood. “It doesn’t even look like the same house,” says MelBarr partner Jamie Melnick. The house was choppy and divided, and the homeowners wanted it to be more open. So MelBarr removed a wall between a formal living room and the kitchen, creating an adjacent dinette. This enlarged kitchen now stretches across the back of the house. The extra space allowed for the addition of a large working island with seating. New backsplash and quartz counters were installed. A kitchen window was enlarged to match one in the former living room and the range moved in between them with a range hood installed. A focal point is a feature wall in the dining area with floor-to-ceiling cabinets bracketing a centre hutch, constructed by Cardinal Fine Cabinetry. “That’s one of my favourite parts,” Melnick says. A larger and more functional mudroom, accessed from the garage and adjacent to the kitchen, has

replaced a former tiny entry area, which had always frustrated the homeowners. This was accomplished by shrinking an oversize bathroom, which included moving some plumbing. n

RENOVATOR SHOWCASE

Corbel Renovation Co. A complete facelift for a Kilworth home showcases the variety of services provided by Corbel Renovation Co. The project gave a fresh modern look to the 50-year-old ranch-style home. The main floor was opened up by removing a wall between the kitchen/dining room and the living room. The kitchen got a complete makeover, with new cabinetry and quartz countertops and a redesigned layout allowing the addition of an island. Another feature was a wood fireplace surround that tied into the new trim and finishes in the living room space. As well, the laundry room was redesigned, with new cabinets added, for increased functionality. A major challenge in the older home was crooked ceilings that required considerable camouflaging. The home’s makeover also incorporated new windows, doors and flooring. “The homeowner had certain things she wanted to complete and we were able to complete those, and then some, all within her budget,” says Marvin Stephenson, Corbel co-owner with his son, Drew. “At the same time this increased the value of her home.”

The homeowner was more than thrilled with the outcome. “You’ve made me so happy,” she told Stephenson. “It’s wonderful and you’re professional, trustworthy and hardworking. You really go the extra mile.”n

Millennium Construction and Design Inc. “Modern again” is the perfect description for Millennium Construction and Design’s transformation of a tired modern classic to a contemporary design style with art deco accents. With good bones to begin with, the modern look meshed well into this home. Blond maple floors were used throughout the main floor and flat grey cabinets with white quartz counters were introduced in the kitchen. The cabinet colour was taken through the rest of the house, creating continuity. All interior doors were painted the same colour and soft grey shades were used throughout the open-concept main floor and carried through the stairwell and upper hallway. Outdated railings were replaced with sleek glass railings with lack of a top rail resulting in a minimalist appearance. Black custom handrails were designed to fit with the original half walls leading to the second floor. On that level, three bedrooms were decorated with a modern flavour in various shades of grey. Custom built-in cabinets, constructed in Millennium’s cabinet shop, were introduced in the office

and master bedroom. The ensuite bathroom changed dramatically as it moved into a converted small bedroom, while the original was transformed into a walk-in closet and dressing area.n

avvy homeowners are bottling up their springtime enthusiasm for landscaping and saving a bit for autumn. The advantages of planting during football and sweater weather are numerous. Plants need less water as days are cooling down, so they are pumped and ready to take full advantage of the next spring’s growth surge. “Most planting can be done in the fall, as most landscapers still plant up until December,” says John Young of John Young C. GET A JUMP ON SPRING ~ Continued from page 49

We love planting ornamental grasses. They look beautiful in the garden all winter and provide food and shelter for the birds . . ." ~ JOHN YOUNG OF JOHN YOUNG C. YOUNG DESIGN

Soil temperature may actually be warmer in the fall than in the spring to help ensure planting success. There are no hot, dry summer days on the horizon to stress newly-installed plants. Roots have time to develop before taking a winter break. Trees and shrubs do best when planted in the fall, which begs the question why Arbor Day is in May. But the key with both is careful selection and expert advice. “Trees at nurseries are in pots or dug into the fields in the winter, and they survive as well as perennials grown in pots,” Young says. “Perennials grown in pots in Ontario are placed in a hoop house with a plastic roof and are not heated. They are all still watered up until the first frost. Therefore, choose plants wisely in the proper zone that you live in to help increase winter survival of the plant.” According to Young, watering, whether by Mother Nature or a hose in hand, along with mulch is as important to plants installed in the fall. “Watering and mulch are key to plants that are planted in the fall as the plant adjusts to growing in the ground, good care should be maintained,” he says. “The weather plays a key part in the survival of plants over winter as long as homeowners give the plants good care once planted and mulched.” There is more selection of products in nurseries in the spring, but in the fall value-conscious homeowners and landscapers might benefit from price reductions in the fall. It’s not all about large plantings and projects. Autumn is the perfect time to plant tulip, crocus, and daffodil bulbs to provide early spring colour in the garden. Is there a more welcome 

sight than the first daffodil blooms of spring after a cold winter? Fall is also ideal to plant one of the biggest trends of the past few years, ornamental grasses. "We love planting ornamental grasses," Young says. "They look beautiful in the garden all winter and provide food and shelter for the birds. They can also protect the new growth of the plant in the spring from freezing and thawing." Landscape designer Patrick Callon, of London, says fall is a good time to tackle tree pruning and to prepare plants for next season. When it comes to pruning trees to correct issues such as structure and desired shade coverage, remember the species. Some, such as sugar maple and birch, must be pruned by the end of September or else the wounds from removing branches won’t heal properly in time for winter. Others, such as evergreens, can be pruned almost year-round. “Pruning can be done when they’re young and with a plan,” he says. “Be careful not to remove too many branches, which can harm a tree.” Fall and even early winter are when experienced homeowners schedule major landscaping work such as decks, patios and retaining walls. The work gets done when families are less likely to be using the yard. A new look is ready when the warm weather arrives next season. Callon’s company works outdoors until Christmas on these types of projects, using greenhouse-type shelters to keep the temperature right. “It’s later in the season, vacations are done and people aren’t outside as much,” he says. “The disruption with dust and activity in the neighbourhood is less.” n

Cozy cooking COMFORT FOOD FOR COOLER TEMPS By Jill Ellis-Worthington

As

summer fades and temperatures fall, we’re back to school and work, needing quicker meal prep. The barbecue gives way to the oven and the crockpot as we look for ways to bring the family together at the end of the day. Christine Kropp, of the Whimsical Bakery and ChristineKropp.com, says, “Autumn is a wonderful time to cook using the good fall vegetables – tomatoes, pumpkin and squash – in casseroles and fall fruit, like apples, in desserts. The oven warms the house and draws everyone into the kitchen; it’s real comfort food.” Yoda Olinyk, of Yoda’s Kitchen, adds that weekday meals can be streamlined by using a crockpot with a timer. “There are really good ones now and you can throw in all your ingredients in the morning and set it to start at a certain time, then you don’t have to worry about overcooked rice or pasta like before.” She adds the secret is to prepare the ingredients on the weekend, when you have more time, to use throughout the week. Preparing your protein – ground beef or lentil ragout (recipe at right) – ahead of time and using it in different ways each night of the week shortcuts the process, while ensuring that your family has delicious home-cooked meals each night. n

YODA’S LENTIL RAGOUT FOUR WAYS

CHRISTINE KROPP’S APPLE CRISP IN A SLOW COOKER

1 Tbsp olive oil 1⁄2 cup onion, diced 1 1⁄2 cup celery, diced 1 1⁄2 cup carrot, diced 3 tsp garlic, fine diced 4 cups button mushrooms, sliced • Sweat in a large pot

FRUIT FILING: 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced into wedges 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 Tbsp cornstarch 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp ground cinnamon

ADD: 10 oz tomato paste 1 tbsp chopped rosemary/thyme or other dried herbs 2 cup organic red lentils 2 cup organic green lentils 8 cups veg stock or water 2 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper

CRUMBLE: 1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/3 cup butter, melted

• Cover, bring to a high simmer and let cook for about 20 minutes. Might need to add more liquid. Be careful not to burn. • Once finished, add chopped herbs. • To use this mixture as a base for four different dishes, divide recipe into four storage containers and refrigerate. • On night one, boil and mash potatoes and/or sweet potatoes, add them to the top of the lentils in a casserole dish for Shepherd’s pie. • On night two, add chili powder, cumin and a can of black beans for taco night. • On night three, add a can of tomato sauce and some fresh herbs, boil spaghetti for Italian night. • On night four, add to a crockpot with beans, tomatoes and corn for vegetarian chili. This works exactly the same with ground beef or ground turkey as the base.

DIRECTIONS: • Crumble Topping: In small bowl, whisk together oats, brown sugar, flour and nutmeg; stir in butter until combined. Sprinkle over apple filling. • Lightly coat the inside of a slow cooker with butter. • In a bowl coat apple wedges with lemon juice. Stir in brown sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon. Place apple mixture into the slow cooker. • Top the apple mixture with oat crumble, press lightly into apples. • Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours OR on high for 2 hours • Topping will be brown and apples tender Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. ● FOR MORE INFORMATION CHRISTINE KROPP www.ChristineKropp.com YODA OLINYK www.letyodacookforyou.com FIND MORE RECIPES ONLINE AT www.facebook.com/lifestylemagazineonline.

GRAND BEND & AREA

Yoga keeps you young

Grand Bend studio is mindful of mobility issues By Kathy Rumleski

F

or many people, losing their mobility as they get older is a real fear. At the West Coast Yoga Centre in Port Franks, every age and every level of mobility can benefit from a unique practice of yoga, says owner and teacher Sandra D’Ippolito. “I use Iyengar yoga to help people keep moving as they age, to make yoga accessible to everyone.” She explains that Iyengar yoga, named after inventor B.K.S. Iyengar, uses props, such as blocks and straps, to achieve alignment in the body. A registered massage therapist and certified yoga instructor, D’Ippolito says each person’s needs are unique and she offers varying levels of yoga with a goal of keeping people’s bodies active so they can do all they wish as they age. “There’s no blueprint or cookie-cutter answer,” she says. “I give (clients) home care and selfcare, and sometimes it requires some massage therapy in the beginning if the symptoms are acute and mobility is a huge issue.” D’Ippolito says people need to empower themselves as they older. “You want to

be able to bend over and pick things up and do your own laundry. If you start getting injuries and (become) weak, you lose the ability and then the brain starts to get small,” she says. “The power remains in being able to fix yourself and help yourself.” D’Ippolito has also assisted her own body through yoga. “That’s why I became a teacher. I really, truly believe if I didn’t have a daily Iyengar yoga practice, I wouldn’t be a massage therapist still. It’s a field of work that’s difficult on your body.” Iyengar yoga also helps people understand how their breath is moving through their body. “That ability to learn how to follow your breath is the first step in meditation practices. Quiet breath and brain are connected to a body that is strong,” she says. Another massage therapist, Matt Johns works with D'Ippolito. He specializes in movement and postural retraining and is a therapist for the national rowing team. To register for fall sessions at West Coast Yoga Centre, you can contact D’Ippolito through the studio website. n

AUTOS DRIVEN BY DESIGN autostyle

BY CLARE DEAR

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON

Automakers are responding to the current market preference for crossover and sport utility models by adding more luxury, convenience features and sporty design, while continuing to improve fuel efficiency, overall performance and vehicle dynamics.  September/October 2019

All-new Highlander delivers improved fuel efficiency

Next-generation RDX sets new benchmark for ride, handling

New Macan combines sportiness, design and practicality

The all-new 2020 Highlander, the fourth generation of Toyota’s popular family-size SUV, is larger than previous models, yet it promises to be more fuel-efficient. This three-row vehicle, built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA-K), is powered by either a more efficient 3.5-litre gas engine that incorporates stop/start technology to reduce fuel consumption, or a new version of Toyota’s hybrid system. The hybrid combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gas engine with a pair of electric motors that are mounted coaxially, rather than the more conventional in-line configuration. This creates a smaller, lighter package with lower frictional losses. Toyota estimates the hybrid will deliver a fuel consumption rating of 6.9 L/100 km – a 17 per cent improvement over the previous hybrid Highlander. There’s a choice of front-wheel drive or three available all-wheel-drive systems – two for the V6 models and a unique AWD system for the hybrid. The standard AWD system sends up to 50 per cent of available torque to the rear wheels when necessary, while hybrid’s system uses a rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Inside the cabin, upgrades include new LED mood lighting and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The new TNGA-K platform provides greater collision protection, complementing standard safety features such as the second-generation of Toyota Safety Sense and Toyota’s Star Safety System.

The third-generation RDX is wider (by 11 millimetres) and longer (61 mm) than its predecessors, with a wheelbase that’s been stretched by 66 mm. More significantly, however, it’s now built on its own Acura platform, unlike previous generations that shared their chassis with their Honda cousins. This new architecture also uses 50 per cent more high-strength steel, resulting in a rigid, compact luxury crossover that’s more agile and wellmannered on the road while its occupants enjoy a redesigned cabin that’s more spacious, quieter and well-appointed with the quality materials, comfort features and luxury one might expect in an Acura product. Enhancing the RDX’s dynamics is the standard SH-AWD (Super Handling All-wheel Drive) system, which helps the vehicle perform better on the road, in adverse conditions or in off-road use. The system can not only shift 70 per cent of the engine’s torque to the rear axle, but can also direct up to 100 per cent of that output to either rear wheel as demands dictate. There’s also a setting for snowy conditions. This torque distribution system significantly enhances the RDX’s agility and control. The RDX is offered in five trim levels, including the new A-Spec package ($50,790) featuring unique 20-inch alloy wheels and special styling touches front and rear.

Porsche has injected its sports-car DNA into its redesigned Macan crossover, boosting this SUV’s sporty character while maintaining its practicality. In fact, its precise steering and impressive handling could be justifiably compared to Porsche’s iconic 911 sports car. But it can also do something its racy sibling can’t – carry four adults and lots of stuff – the cargo area will hold 500 litres with the rear bench upright, 1,500 litres with the seatback folded. The interior is well designed, helping integrate the driver into the vehicle. For example, the distance between the steering wheel and the PDK gear selector, as well as the main vehicle functions, is extremely short – characteristic of a sports car. The new full-HD resolution, 10.9-inch Porsche Communication Management touchscreen display can be reconfigured to the driver’s preferences, while its intuitive menu provides faster access to the main functions. High-quality leather surrounds the cabin’s occupants, who are kept comfortable by the standard three-zone automatic climate control system. An optional ionizer for improved air quality is a new feature. For audiophiles, premium BOSE and Burmester surround sound systems are available. The sports car flavour of the Macan is enhanced by the ascending centre console, optional multifunctional GT sports steering wheel and available sports exhaust system.

➣ 2019 Audi Q3 Redesigned Q3 delivers premium features in a compact package Audi has redesigned its Q3 luxury crossover for 2019, adding about 100 millimetres to its length and stretching the wheelbase an additional 76 mm to 2,680 mm. The increased size has been put to good use, with more cargo space (up to 1,525 litres with the seats folded) and added cabin space. The 40/20/40-split rear bench not only reclines, but now also slides fore and aft, plus the power liftgate can now be opened by simply sweeping your foot under the rear bumper. The new Q3 also benefits from technological advances introduced on Audi’s higher-end models, such as the standard 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and the 8.8-inch, centre-mounted MMI touchscreen that controls access to its connectivity and infotainment features. Both systems can be upgraded, including a reconfigurable 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit and a 10.1-inch MMI display. There’s a full array of standard and available driver-assist features, including park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Although it’s the smallest SUV in the Audi lineup, the Q3 doesn’t compromise on traits that are synonymous with this German automaker, including excellent build quality, premium materials and refined design. The ride and handling of the Q3 are also in step with the brand’s high standards.

Escorted luxury tours

Travel With Bradley adds the personal touch

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

I

n January, a small group of travellers, fresh from Canadian seasonal festivities, will experience another Christmas in another culture: an Orthodox Ukrainian celebration with customs unchanged for centuries. This escorted tour from the city of Lviv, through Carpathian Mountain villages to the historic city of Chernivtsi, is just one of the distinctive travel opportunities offered by Travel With Bradley through Ellison Travel and Tours. “These tours are unique experiences that are fully escorted, all-inclusive and filled with hidden gems, plus a few surprises,” says Cathy Ellison, who operates Ellison Travel with her husband Doug. “I try to find places and things that are different,” Bradley Walters says of his personally created and hosted tours. “Many travellers today are looking for that.”

Over the years Walters, who’s part of the Walters Family entertainers known world-wide for their country music performances, has grown his repertoire from coach tours to locations he’s experienced – like Nashville and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – to exotic destinations including South Africa and Antarctica. It all started in 1986, when the family had concluded their season with a performance at Expo in Vancouver. Walters wondered what to do in the months until the next year’s season started, so his mother suggested he put together some travel tours. He says a couple of things set his offerings apart from other tour operators. They’re all-inclusive, with no hidden costs or extra charges for add-ons. “People like that because they know

ABOVE Bradley Walters, owner of Travel With Bradley. TOP Walter’s agency will be offering a trip exploring Scandanavia, Russia and the Baltic.

upfront exactly what it’s going to cost them,” he says. Walters also aims for a more exclusive product, with higher-end hotels and meals. “It’s overall more of a deluxe product. But when people compare, other tours in the long run seem to cost more with the additional charges. So for what they’re getting, it’s good value.” “For the traveller who wants to be pampered and have all details taken care of, Travel With Bradley hits the mark,” Cathy Ellison agrees. Walters leads upwards of 20 tours most years between October and May. In 2020 destinations will include Antarctica and South America, Portugal’s Douro River and Germany’s Oberammergau Passion Play. n

From their family to yours Saratoga Homes is building futures

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

W

hen Doug Durnin, owner of Saratoga Homes, cites his company’s motto - “Let our family build for yours” – he means it in the literal sense. Over the years, Durnin’s three children, daughter Ashley and sons Colton and Tanner, have all joined their father in the business of building quality custom homes throughout the region. Durnin launched the business in 1985, having gained experience working for one of the largest developers in the city, as well as another regional builder. Even the company’s name has a family connection. His parents’ farm backed onto Saratoga Swamp outside Auburn just northeast of Goderich. As he grew his business through several good years and the difficult ‘90s

into the 21st century, he never anticipated that his children would someday make it a true family enterprise. But all three grew up spending summers working on job sites. “I remember my dad taking me to open houses as a young kid and helping clean stickers off windows,” says Ashley, the eldest of the three. “These are times I will never forget and, as of late, I’ve been able to share these same experiences with my own kids.” Ashley has been with the company for 13 years, and “wears many hats, as administrator,” says her father. A graduate of Fanshawe College’s construction engineering supervisor program, she works with clients from start to finish. This includes dealing with after-service warranty issues.

ABOVE Working together at Saratoga Homes are (l-r) Ashley Ankers, Doug Durnin, Tanner Durnin, Colton Durnin.

Colton has been site supervisor for the past five years, working with the trades to ensure that Saratoga’s high standards are met. He worked his way up to this position, starting with a high-school co-op with one of the company’s bricklayers and then joining the framing company and later working as a trimmer. Tanner, a graduate of Fanshawe’s architectural technology program and full-time with the company since 2013, does estimating and works with clients and sales staff on pricing. “They all help out in different capacities and for the most part they work well together to put out our superior product,” Doug says of his offspring. “They’re doing a fantastic job, and I feel very proud.”n

Beautiful environment

Maria Bikas Salon provides enhanced client experience

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

M

aria Bikas designed her North London salon, opened more than a decade ago, as a warm and welcoming space with a skilled and professional staff providing a full selection of hair, make-up and esthetic services. This fall, that vision has been enhanced. There’s a cozier ambience, thanks to a renovation adding new brick and wood walls. “I wanted a more homey feel for a welcoming neighbourhood salon,” Bikas says. “I feel like we’ve warmed it up a bit.” She’s also adding a new service. Senior stylist, Rachael, will be offering microblading, a tattooing technique using semi-permanent pigment to shape and fill out eyebrows. The salon has 16 staff, including nine

licensed stylists, each with particular specialities in hair styling and colouring, make-up application, manicures and pedicures, and two estheticians, including Bikas. Education to ensure their skills are up-to-date and competitive in the marketplace has always been a priority. “We take education courses regularly, travelling to Toronto and Montreal and other places,” she says. Bikas’ criteria for staff is that they have the personality and character to interact with people so that clients feel they have a personal relationship with their stylists. Another priority for Bikas is the use of high-quality products and now a new hair colour line may be added to the salon’s offerings. “We’re exploring a new colour line

called Affinage, and we’re super excited about it,” Bikas says. The brand, with a diverse colour range, is known for its natural ingredients, cruelty-free formulations and cutting-edge technology that makes the penetration of the colour deeper and safer and reduces the action of free radicals. Affinage would join the salon’s existing repertoire of products, including Kevin Murphy, salon-only hair care products, L’Oréal Professionel hair products, Dermalogica skincare products and its signature Maria Bikas Kosmetics, in hand-selected colour lines that complement each season. This season, Bikas notes, warm hues, like apricot and copper tones, are trending. n

Growing and giving back

Buttons and Bows focuses on community

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

hen Patti and Gary Prowse opened their Buttons and Bows womenswear store in Point Edward just over a year ago, it hit the ground running. And that momentum has continued. A few months after the launch, the store doubled in size to the current 2,500 square feet, and Patti set out to meet an identified need for more small and plus sizes. The store now carries sizes 2 to 22, with a third of its space devoted to the larger sizes. “We have really pretty things for plus-size women,” Patti Prowse says. She carries a number of Canadian lines including Vancouver’s Sympli and Jag Jeans from Winnipeg. The store has the largest selection of Quebec-based

Joseph Ribkoff designs in the area. But Patti also looks for unique items and imports plus-size lines from Italy and Denmark. Last year, Buttons and Bows was one of the first stores in Canada to bring in Oh My Gauze, a brand of breathable 100-per-cent cotton gauze clothing, manufactured in Mexico. In addition to a full spectrum of women’s clothing, the store has a vast assortment purses and accessories and jewelry. Business is good, she says, noting that customers are coming from further afield, including London. Wanting to share her good fortune, Patti hosts “give-back events” to support her charity of choice, Women’s Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton, which provides support and advocacy

to women experiencing abuse. She also hosts monthly events at the store, such as fashion shows. On September 16, she will partner with Olives Casual Cuisine, also in Sarnia, to host a semiannual dinner and fashion show. In November, she’s asking customers to bring in gently-used purses filled with toiletries for women, such as shampoo, cosmetic samples, dental and hair care products, to be given to Interval Home clients for Christmas. Donors will be entered in a draw for a Buttons and Bows $100 gift certificate. While Prowse continues to be involved with the store and the events, she says she “stepping back a little bit,” with her daughter Leigh Anne James managing the store on a daily basis. n

On the hunt

Skwirl Gallery finds the right pieces

By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

C

ollecting art can be great fun, says Sandra May. But to fully appreciate that, you need to know what you are doing. That’s the message she and her husband, Rob, hope to bring to Londoners through Skwirl Fine Art Gallery, which they opened in 2018. The message is reflected in the gallery’s name, referencing the desire to collect art just as a squirrel forages for and collects nuts, May says. “The foraging for fine art is as much the task as collecting fine art.” However, knowledge is the key. “If you have the knowledge, it can be an absolute blast and we want to give people that knowledge,” she says. To that end, they offer private sessions, by appointment to create a more personal experience, to explore the client’s taste in art and discuss artists that might fit that preference. The couple also promotes art books and, in fact, if one is available about the art being purchased, Skwirl includes it with the sale. They collaborate with galleries and dealers across the country to source their works. The Mays have partnered with Western’s McIntosh Gallery and Museum London to foster knowledge and appreciation for local, regional and Canadian artists. In addition to the one-on-one appointments, Skwirl also hosts occasional shows but May is selective about the artists and topics. She’s excited about an upcoming exhibition on November 13, featuring Ontario artist Allen Smutylo. The Mongolian Chronicles – A Story of Eagles, Demons and Empires – artwork accompanied by a hardcover book – explores legendary Kazakh nomads, wandering pastoralists in remote steppes of West Mongolia, one of the last cultures on earth that hunt wild game on horseback using huge golden eagles. It continues Smutylo’s 40-year examination of the relationship between human cultures and the natural world. The book includes their story plus historical photos and artwork. May says Skwirl’s clientele has been growing since its launch. “We’ve been very fortunate since we’re just a year old,” she says. “Interest has been very strong through word-of-mouth. We’ve been finding that there is certainly great potential for art collectors here in London.” n
