High Spirits In Speyside
Internationally renowned Spirit of Speyside
Whisky Festival returns this spring 2023, from 26th April to 1st May. This annual celebration of Scotland’s national drink has become one of the largest events of its kind anywhere in the world, bringing thousands of visitors to Speyside each year since its creation in 1999.
This year’s event offers a bumper programme of whisky-inspired events designed to entice and inform the most experienced of connoisseurs, to the whisky novice.
From distilleries to village halls, to local whisky bars, historic castles and the great outdoors, a range of events will take place throughout the scenic region of Speyside – the biggest whisky producing region in Scotland.
Supported by Speyside businesses, communities, members and locals, it is this master blend of talent from the iconic whisky making region that makes the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival each year. Platinum partners include Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Festival Ambassadors of the Year 2022, Steph & Lauren Murray at the Dowans Hotel, as well as some of whisky’s most distinguished brands like The Glenlivet, Diageo, Craigellachie, Benromach, and newcomer to the festival, Speyburn.
To mark the distillery’s 125th Anniversary, Speyburn is joining the Spirit of Speyside Festival and opening its doors to the public for the first time. During the festival, Speyburn will be running two tours, three times a day, led by its Distillery Manager and Senior Brand Ambassador. Guests will discover the history and

heritage of Speyburn, and of course, enjoy a dram or two of Speyburn’s award-winning single malt.
With over 500 events planned for this year’s Festival, other highlights include:
• Raise A Barrel: Join Balvenie Distillery’s expert cooper Ian McDonald for a morning learning to raise your own barrel. Afterwards share a dram with Ian and hear a story or two.
• Tamnavulin Discovery Tour and Tasting Experience: Join Distillery Manager Leon for a guided tour and explore where they craft their exceptional single malt whisky, usually closed to the public. Then enjoy a guided tasting of 4 Tamnavulin expressions and their perfect pairing, complete with a signature Speyside cocktail.
• Keith & Dufftown railway "Dram Tram" evening journey: Take a two-hour evening return train journey from Dufftown station and sample five specially curated whiskies associated with the railway’s original route stations Dufftown, Drummuir, Auchindachy, Earlsmill, and Keith.
The Festival saw unprecedented demand when tickets launched in January this year, with over 150 events selling out in the first weekend. Event providers responded by adding new events and increasing capacity at many of the most popular.
George McNeil, Chairman of The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, said: “Whether you’re a dram expert or just entering the world of whisky for the first time, we will be delighted to welcome you to Spirit
of Speyside Whisky Festival in spring. “Taking place across Elgin, to Kingussie, to Forres, our comprehensive programme of events brings the journey of Scottish whisky to life for visitors. Whether its tastings of the old and rare, pairings with doughnuts, cocktails or a whisky picnic and a paddle board, our members and partners have come together to create truly world-class and unforgettable experiences set among spectacular scenery.
“Our visitors travel from as many as 35 different countries, bringing everyone together over a shared passion and interest for whisky. I can think of no better antidote to the various challenges of the past few years.”

mini first aid
There’s a lot to think about when planning a holiday, especially abroad, and a bit of preparation can go a long way towards a successful and safe family holiday. We will talk you through those all-important emergency numbers, and more. Oh, and make ours a Pina Colada!
safety in numbers
A first aid emergency is hard enough in familiar territory, but throw a foreign language, lack of local knowledge and one drink too many into the mix and your ability to calmly address a situation can be severely compromised.
It’s so important to appreciate that the outcome of any emergency is always going to be better if the medical response time is quicker.
So, what can you do on your holiday to access help quickly?
• Know your numbers – in a medical emergency in Europe call 112; in the USA call 911.
• Research your resort / locality – it sounds really boring, but you will never regret taking a few minutes out to find your local hospital / medical centre / pharmacy should you end up needing it – your hotel rep will be able to help you with this.
• Get familiar with Google Translate – practise converting some simple phrases – it’s actually quite fun to do with the kids so get them to have a go too!
keeping the kids safe in the sun
When it comes to sunscreen, it’s not just a case of slapping anything on and hoping for the best. Be mindful of the following:
• Children should be using AT LEAST SPF30 sunscreen. Make sure the product you are using also protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
• Sunscreen should ideally be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure, to all exposed parts of the body.
• When kids are swimming, sunscreen needs to be reapplied immediately after coming out of the water, even if it is “waterresistant.”
• Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, even when not playing in the water, as it can be rubbed off when sweating and the sun naturally “dries” it off our skin.
• Don’t apply sunscreen too thinly as the amount of protection given is then reduced – if you are unsure, this is one instance where more is better!
10 KIT
• Make sure your sunscreen has not passed its expiry date – most have a 12-month limit on their ability to protect skin once opened, indicated by a little “open pot” symbol on the packaging (see image). Otherwise, you are just slathering your child in what is essentially expensive moisturiser!
swimsuits
Swimsuits are now all over the shops and it is important to think about the colour of swimwear you purchase for your child.
If your child were to get in trouble in the water, lifeguards and other people will need to get to them as quickly as possible. This means putting them in swimwear that is bright and easily spotted, both in clear water (top picture of each colour) or murky beach waves (bottom picture). You can quite clearly see that pale blue or white costumes should be avoided.
don’t let your holiday be ruined by wasp stings
Wasps can cause absolute havoc on holiday and many a lazy day by the pool has been ruined by a sting.
• If the sting is still visible, brush or scrape it off with a hard edge like a credit card or a book. DO NOT use tweezers here, as you risk squeezing more poison into the wound.
• Apply an ice pack or cold compress for at least 10 minutes –the pool bar is your friend here – ask them to wrap ice cubes in a clean tea towel.
• Stings to the mouth and throat can be dangerous as there is a risk of tissues in the mouth and throat swelling, which could cause an airway blockage. To combat this,
suck on an ice lolly, ice cream or ice cube, or sip cold water to help prevent swelling.
• Call 999 in the UK / 112 in Europe / 911 in the USA if your child is having difficulty breathing, a wide spread rash or swelling to the face, neck, tongue, mouth or lips –these signs could indicate a serious allergic reaction.
We wouldn’t be Mini First Aid if we didn’t say it – take a first aid kit with you!

Tracy undertakes lovely walks all over our beautiful country and we are delighted she has agreed to provide Lifestyle readers with the inside knowledge that she has gleaned from her many adventures
I hope you enjoy Tracy’s walks? Please do let us know and send us some photos.
This beautiful walk on the Moray coastal trail takes you along past the harbour and on to the old railway line path with a stunning coastal view and a chance you may see dolphins passing by. There are an abundance of historical sites along the way with great information boards!
Route: Leaving the car park follow the path that takes you along to the harbour. The harbour itself was built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800’s with impressive three storey warehouses. Three of the warehouses still remain and have now been converted into flats.
Distance: 4 ¾ miles
Time: 2hrs
Level: Easy with some elevation
Terrain: Mix of pavements, coastal trail, woodland trail, and country road.
Access: Arrive by car, parking available at the opening of the caravan park. Follow the signs for the caravan park and use the car park on the left-hand side using postcode IV30 5RP. There is a No32 Stagecoach bus from Elgin that drops off not far from the start.
TRACY GOES OUTSIDE
Once you pass by the warehouses take the stairs up to some great views of Burghead bay. Turn right along to the visitors’ centre in the old white round building, here you can find out about Pictish Burghead dating back to 400AD. Once you have explored the centre, head towards the old anchor and you will see the Clavie mound. This is where on the 11th of January every year Burghead celebrate their New Year with a unique fire festival called the burning of the Clavie. The significance of the 11th January dates back to the 1750’s
From the Clavie mound, head towards the waterside and turn right along the tarred road, where you will find the Harvest Reaper boat that was originally built in Fraserburgh in 1931 and was finally berthed here in 2015. There are always plenty of seabirds to look out for as you walk along the water’s edge.
Further on you will pass by the Maltings and on to the coastal path. You will come to St Aethan’s Well and onto the disused quarry. There are several way markers for the Clarkly Hill short walk, ignore these. You will pass under an old railway bridge before coming to the Cummingston Crag. The sandstone crag is a popular sea cliff for mountain climbers, and you may see some climbing the Prophet Walls (as it is known) as you are walking past!
Once under the second old railway bridge you find an opening on the left-hand side; this path will double back before going over the top of the bridge. Head straight on here until you arrive in Cummingston.
At the junction you will see the sign post a little to the left for Clarkly Hill. Cross over the main road and up the country road ahead. Looking over to the left and you will get some great views of Hopeman in the distance.
You will soon come to your next way marker taking you onto a track on your right. This will take you past a pig farm before coming to your next sign post. Here you will go through the gate and straight ahead into a wooded area.
The viewpoint is unfortunately overgrown now, turn right at the fence and follow the path through the wood till you come to the gate at the other side.
From the wood you will carry on down the road back towards Burghead taking in the views ahead. Once past the masts go through the gate and back to the main road. Cross over and turn left here until you come to the junction to turn right, back in to Burghead.
Follow the main road back until you come to the community gardens. From here turning left to arrive back at the carpark.

Athree-day food and drink festival celebrating the seaside town of Nairn is set to take place in April once again
Taste of Nairn, supported by title sponsor Ashers Bakery, includes a two-day artisan food and drink market, food and drink demos, and the public will be invited to take part in two fun competitions.
This year, there is also the addition of a Wellness Hub, supported by Nairn-based Highland Yoga Collective which will include different workshops including cacao yoga and sound baths.
The whole event takes place between April 28-30 and will also feature numerous events at different venues throughout the seaside town.
The event is being co-ordinated by Nairn Connects BID which exists to work with local businesses and the community to make the town a more attractive place to visit and do business.
Lucy Harding, Nairn BID manager said: “It is great to see Taste of Nairn returning. It’s really found its feet now and this year is shaping up to offer more than ever before. Nairn BID is staging a two-day food and drink market in the Nairn Community & Arts Centre. This will feature producers from all over the region and will incorporate loads of demonstrations and tastings.
“In addition to the market, we are delighted to be welcoming Highland Yoga Collective with their well-being hub and we are already hearing from businesses from across Nairnshire about
FOOD & DRINK

what they are planning, to ensure they join in with this great celebration of what Nairn has to offer.”
Frying pans and mixing bowls at the ready! Taste of Nairn has two tasty competitions for you to get involved in.
The first day of the market
– April 29 –people will get the chance
to take part in the World Tattie Scone Contest. The event is being supported by the Oakwood Cookery School near Elgin and was originally launched in 2013 at Piping At Forres.
Elaine Sutherland, owner of the Oakwood Cookery School said she was delighted the competition will return.
She said: “This contest will appeal to budding cooks wanting to put their culinary skills to the test and those just looking for a bit of fun.
“The aim of the competition is to make a tattie scone using a set recipe with mashed potatoes and flour, and contestants bring their own magic ingredient to wow the judges. The most tasty and imaginative scone will be chosen as the winner.”
If baking is more your thing, there’s chance to take part in the Showstopper Cake Bake Off, sponsored by this very magazine!
Lifestyle is delighted to once again sponsor the Showstopper Cake Bake Off. Rhona said “I couldn’t believe the standard of cakes presented last year, they were amazing. It was a tough job having to taste them all, and I get to do it all again this year! I can’t wait to see what fabulous designs and tastes the contestants come up with”
Lucy said: “There are two fantastic opportunities for the public to get involved in Taste of Nairn. The Tattie Scone Contest is a lot of fun, and the Showstopper Contest which will take place on Sunday, April 30, will this year have a Royal theme, and 2 categories for Children and Adults. If last year’s entries are anything to go by, we really are going to have some spectacular cakes to judge. We cannot wait to see – and taste – all the entries.”

Well, 2022 what can we say!!
I don’t think the events could have asked for much better. The weather was cracking, and the crowds came in their droves to support them. The many volunteers that work tirelessly to put on these events absolutely deserved it. I think everyone was so glad to get back, it was wonderful to see.
The plans are now well underway for 2023, and everyone is praying that the weather at least, looks on them favourably again this year.
Dates below for you to pop into your diary to make sure you get along again this year and give them all some much needed support.
Join the Cornhill Highland Games
on Saturday 3rd June in Cornhill by Banff, Aberdeenshire
This event kicks off from 10am with Highland Dancing competitions, followed by a variety of heavy and light traditional Highland Games events from 11am, including the popular toss the caber and throwing the hammer contests.
Now in its 51st year, the Knock Hill Race starts at 11am, challenging competitors across an 8.5 mile road and hill route. A 10k road race also takes place from 11am. Registration for both races will be available from 10am -10.45am on the day, with prize money available for top placements. Several children’s races will take place in the games arena from 2pm.
Teams from across the north east will battle it out in enthralling tug o’ war competitions, where Young Farmers winners from both men’s and ladies’ contests will qualify for Royal Highland Show competitions later this year.
Visitors can also enjoy entertainment from local pipe bands, a variety of stalls and catering options, as well as a licensed bar, with entertainment from 4.30pm (over 18s only)
They look forward to welcoming you on the day.

Saving the Aviators
In just a few weeks Common Swift will arrive on our shores after an 8,000 mile migration journey from Sub-Saharan Africa to the UK to breed. This incredible bird will complete its entire journey without once touching the ground. Swifts spend more time airborne than any other species, eating, sleeping, drinking and mating on the wing. A more fascinating bird you will be hard pressed to find, an iconic bird of summer but one that has been sadly overlooked in recent years. Common Swift are solely reliant on our urban environment for their breeding success. They access nesting sites via small holes in the pointing of our buildings, under loose tiles and slates landing immediately on the wall head or available ledge as they enter at a mind boggling 40mph! At this point please don’t assume they make a nuisance of themselves, they are clean and quiet living birds. Swifts do not enter your building, for a bird that is continually airborne only landing to nest, they have evolved very weak legs and combined with a 15” wingspan means should they be unfortunate enough to end up inside the roof space it would prove fatal as they would be unable to exit. Swifts
are very clean birds and since they nest almost within the structure of the building they make no external mess and the nesting space within is kept spotlessly clean throughout the breeding season, which is early May – early September.
Common Swift and another delightful summer visitor the House Martin were sadly both classified as Red List species in December 2021, Swallow decline is also cause for concern. There are several reasons for this, Swifts for example have suffered losses of 63% over the last 25 years. Climate change and reduction in insect food supply are significant and nest site loss is certainly a contributing factor. We are rapidly losing all three of our favourite feathered indicators of summer. Renovations, demolitions and various upgrades have meant these little aviators are in big trouble as each year they are losing nest sites to which they are loyal and they are also losing their lives to certain building repairs made during the breeding season. People are simply unaware or believe these birds will harm the fabric of the building. Swift generations may have nested at the same place for hundreds of years unnoticed and when we lose that lifecycle we lose them. We don’t advocate you leave

structures to fall into disrepair, there is no need because it is easy and inexpensive to protect and provide for these birds with a little care. Contact us early on in your project for assistance.
The Huntly Swift Group (NES Swifts) was founded in March 2017 to address the decline of our Swifts, Swallows and House Martins. I am pleased to say our hard work is finally paying off and we now cover the North East of Scotland! We survey places and buildings each season for active nest sites and record that information so we can advise planners and individuals on mitigation and provision. We love to visit groups and schools with a presentation and keep a stock of external nest boxes for various community and school projects.
Why not attend one of our bird watch events or visit our fundraising stall? Are you struggling to identify a Swift from a Swallow or Martin? Wondering what to do if you find a grounded Swift? Maybe you are lucky enough to have one of them nesting with you and need more advice or thinking about a renovation, please get in touch for free guidance! If you haven’t yet witnessed the jaw dropping entertainment that is a Swift Screaming Party, then come and join us on a Swift Walk this summer – I promise you will be amazed!
As a voluntary group we welcome help to carry on our work so if you think you could spare any time or would simply like to find out more about our events please get in touch! You can also sign up for our emailed ‘Saving the Aviators’ quarterly newsletter.

Are you starting to think about how you’d love your baby’s birth to be?
By Sophia Hanson
Do you find that your significant other half is a bit disinterested? Too busy to get involved, or muttering phrases such as ‘what will be will be; there’s no point planning.’
Does it frustrate you or make you feel a bit sad? Do you wish that it was different?
From experience, there are five main reasons that birth partners shy away from these conversations:
1) They feel powerless because there are so many unknowns (even on the day you give birth).
2) They don’t fully appreciate just how much the two of you can influence your baby’s birth.
3) They don’t realise how much a conversation (even one about a situation that might turn out completely different) can support you.
4) They are genuinely freaked out by the onslaught of a lot of baby talk; they miss the ‘old you’.
5) They are not ready to face their fears.
I can also guarantee that finding a way to involve them in birth preparation will support you both, and help you deepen your bond as a family unit.
Here are three ways that you can do that:
• Explain that by exploring your birth options you are better equipped to have an empowered
discussion with your healthcare providers on the day, and to make the best choices for you and your baby.
• Let them know what they can personally do to support you during your baby’s birth including creating as peaceful and unobserved an environment as possible, bringing you drinks and snacks, sharing words of encouragement, putting their phone away and being present, advocating for your wishes, giving you soothing strokes massage, and prompting you to use your breathing techniques. Tell them what you need from them and why that’s important to you.
• Remind them that you’re a team and their opinions are valuable to you (assuming they are!).
Birth comes with a lot of uncertainty but one thing is for sure, YOU are going to be there for all of it and the more prepared you are the more confident, calm and relaxed you will be.
Go to a prenatal yoga class. Find a great hypnobirthing teacher. Ask friends and family to share positive birth stories. Find ways to feel calm and relaxed on a daily basis. Think about the type of birth that you would LOVE to have.
I’d love to hear your ideas. Message me at sophia@highlandhypnobirthing.co.uk

BNI MORAY VISITORS’ DAY

LATNEM
(Mental spelt backwards)
Linsey Singers and Gill Skene founded LATNEM in 2020. They had both suffered their own struggles with perinatal mental health.
Both were passionate to ensure that other mums who suffered with their mental health, had someone to talk to who really understood.
Linsey and Gill had been keen to start a peer support group but were daunted to go it alone. Within months of meeting each other at a conference for Maternal Mental Health in Glasgow, and discovering they lived only 6 miles apart in Aberdeenshire, the first LATNEM meeting was held.
The first meeting, only three brave mums went along, but now over two hundred registered members regularly attend.
As new mums with mental ill health, Linsey and Gill felt isolated and affected by the stigma
A comprehensive mental health peer support service is offered for mothers and birthing people in Scotland including face to face group meetings in Moray, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, and online group meetings which are Scotland wide.
In addition to the core peer support service, activities such as creative journaling, mindful “Crafternoons”, Beyond Birth Mental Wellbeing Workshops, Group Psychology, Emotional Freedom Technique Classes, Walk and Talk, Playdates and more are offered.
associated with it. They set up LATNEM to offer everything they needed when they were unwell: - a safe, judgement free space to meet other mums and birthing people who are having a similar experience: - obviously with copious amounts of cake!
All services offered by LATNEM are free of charge, there should never be a financial barrier to access support. Support is offered to ALL mums and birthing people in Scotland, regardless of any disability, gender, sexual orientation, age, race or ethnicity with children

You can register for a space at any LATNEM peer support meeting via Eventbrite: http://latnem.eventbrite.com

Introducing Emmett Therapy
The majority of complementary therapies come from the ancient civilisations of China, India, North Africa or South America. They are rooted in global culture and have survived for thousands of years, because they work.
Emmett Therapy however is a relatively new treatment originating from Australia. It is a light touch therapy which works to ‘reset’ troubled muscles by stimulating the brain to restore default settings. It’s often described as similar to re-booting a computer which has become overloaded and glitchy!
Emmett is quickly finding its niche among the traditional treatments, despite its relative youth. This may be partly due to the miraculous results that can be achieved in just a few minutes of therapy. It wouldn’t be right to claim that it works for everyone, but we have genuinely seen really clear results in the vast majority of those who choose to try it. Evidenced by the number of repeat appointments!
It’s a fully clothed therapy, a non invasive technique, pain free and very relaxing. Our therapist is able to identify the exact points of the body to connect together by touch, which allows the brain to focus on the area in need of repair or reset. It can take just a few minutes for the change to happen. Clients will often feel a tingle, a pulsing sensation, or heat, and then will (usually) begin to feel relief, sometimes jawdroppingly so!
If you haven’t considered it before, our therapist has successfully addressed:
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Chronic Constipation
• Hammer Toe
• Frozen Shoulder
• Arm injuries
• Back injuries
• Rotator Cuff Damage
• Sciatica
• Knee Damage
• Ankle injuries
• Carpal Tunnel syndrome
And many more.
If you’re suffering, why not give Emmett Therapy a try?
Treatments can be booked ahead on most days, plus evenings and weekends by appointment.

Rosie lives in Aberdeenshire with her husband, 4 Home Educated children, and a whole menagerie of animals which all Spark Joy. My life could be described as somewhat busy and I could be described as somewhat scatty. I am not a naturally organised person, (I tend to skid in sideways with a “Phew I made it!” expression on my face) so I have had to come up with a way of keeping my life on track. It had to be simple, straightforward and realistic, not overwhelming and above all, easy. The first part of any Time Management work that I do with clients is the Brain Dump. Working on the basis that our brains are hopelessly overloaded, we must get things out of our head and written down so that we have the mental space to actually focus on the task in hand. This means that when we are writing an article about Time Management, our brains are on-task and not floating off worrying about shopping lists, or if
Time Management
we have the time to do the Couch to 5k, or will we remember to book the dentist for the horses in September. One of the biggest lies that we tell ourselves is that we don’t need to write something down because we will remember it, but this is simply not true. Leaving a task in our heads rather than writing it down just leads to us worrying about it at inopportune times. I know that I have my tasks pinned down in my notebook, so I can put them from my mind and focus on the task in hand.
I encourage you to get a pen and paper and just start by jotting down everything that is on your mind. This may take some time, and the first time you do this, it may feel overwhelming as you start to see it all, but do not panic! This is only the first step. I have had clients fill several sides of paper with this and take several hours to get it all out of their heads but getting it out of your head and onto paper is important to

free up the space in your mind and prevent mental paralysis.
Next, look at your brain dump and start to work your way through it. For each item, first of all, decide if it’s actually something that you want to get done! Over the years, I have become a bit ruthless with my To Do list. Just as I have decluttered my physical belongings, so I have decluttered my diary. If it is not adding to my life, is it really something that I need to do? Just like removing unnecessary things from my home has helped me to keep it tidier, removing unnecessary things from my diary has made it easier to manage my life. In the same way that it’s almost impossible to keep a home tidy and organised when it has too many things in it, it’s pretty much impossible to keep and stay organised when you have a diary that is stuffed full.
For the items that you are keeping on your list, decide what the very next step is that you need to do to move it forward and write it down.
Having got all your thoughts, tasks and actions out onto paper, the next step is to organise your planner or diary. Many people use the calendars in their phones or on their computers to manage their time but, whilst I use my digital calendar to make appointments and notes related to them (and share these with my family), I do find that a pencil and paper method focuses my mind more. The act of having to move items from one page to another makes me more likely to actually get them done. I do still use my phone to make a note of tasks as I go along if I am out and about, but I always transfer them to my paper diary and then they actually get done.
I go into a lot of detail about how I use my planner in a video on my website (it’s under the tab that says “resources”, along with a host of other free resources), but here I’m just going to quickly explain the concept of a visual diary.
I do love a good list and being able to tick things off it as I go, but the problem with a To Do list is that it doesn’t take into account how long tasks are going to take, where you are expecting to be, where you have to be to do them, or how important they are. Having a visual diary helps with this. It shows you when you are expecting to do things and how long you are expecting them to take. It’s not set in stone or rigid, but it’s a good framework that helps you to balance structure and flexibility. It can also help you in saying “no” to things when you can see that you already have as much in your diary as you want to do.
To set up my Visual Diary, I open up my weekly grid and start by writing in all my appointments and anything else that is set and booked. Then I look through my To Do list and I plan when I am going to get things done that week. Putting things into a specific slot helps me to be intentional and efficient with my time. I make sure that I leave free space in my day so that when the inevitable mishap arises (a traffic jam, a child hurting themselves, or a fence getting broken), I have time to deal with it and without a huge knock-on effect on the rest of my day. Be realistic with your time when you are doing this, remembering that things often take longer than we think, and don’t forget to plan breathing space for yourself. If you realise that you have too much to do in the time available, declutter your obligations.
At the end of each week, I take some time to review what I have got done (my Tah Dah List!) and what needs to be moved to a later date then I set up my diary for the coming week.

Soy Kilts – Own Family Wedding
Everyone loves a wedding – and all weddings, be they lavish affairs or small intimate family gatherings – are special.
But for Moira George of Portsoy based Soy Kilts, the wedding of her son and his fiancé was to be extra special. For months Moira had been working on their secret wedding, designing new outfits and playing her cards very close to her chest. The wedding date had been set in October last year and both bride and groom wanted something quiet and intimate and they got their wish. Old and new combined to make it a very special day.
Moira was delighted when Chris, the groom, chose the Silver Darlings tartan which he teamed up with a blue Donegal tweed jacket and waistcoat, his own sapphire mink dress sporran and a fly plaid. The overall effect was both stunning and tasteful.
Other members of the wedding party were sporting tartans which complemented the groom’s attire: Moira’s second son Steven chose a relatively new

tartan – the Hebridean Gunn (the family’s tartan), which he teamed with a Lovat Clunie jacket and waistcoat and a sapphire mink dress sporran while Mel, his partner, complemented his outfit perfectly, and shone in lilac and blue.
Moira’s husband, Colin, opted for the Modern Patriot (which tied in extremely well with her dress) and was teamed with a navy tweed jacket and waistcoat and sapphire mink sporran.
But the piece de resistance had to be the bride’s dress, which Moira started in late January after all the kilts had been sewn. Georgie had entrusted Moira to make her wedding dress and the finished article was positively stunning. There had been a trip south to Manchester to select the lace and satin fabric: the lace was called Holly, a fitting touch as their dog – an Australian Kelpie – shares the same name. There were seven small buttons from Georgie’s late granda’s shirt, embellished with beads stitched on to form a flower, meaning that he was with her on her special day. Georgie’s horse Jacob did not miss out either, as he had a new brow band made with Silver Darlings tartan by her friend Alana.
Chris also had a touch of nostalgia with his outfit – a piece of tartan from his granda’s kilt was sewn into the pocket of his jacket.
There was a delightful touch at the meal. Teddy bears made up in matching outfits by Memory Bespoke Creations adorned the tables – a lovely talking point and keepsake from the day. The stunning cake by Evelyn’s Cake Boutique topped the proceedings, looking and tasting fabulous. Afterwards the new Mr and Mrs went down to Portsoy to pose for photos with Jacob and also with Moira’s father’s vintage motorcycle. A fitting end to a wonderful day, made even more special by the addition of personal family touches.

Customer Experience
As a teenager I used to work for Whitbread, starting out in the kitchen whilst at school working my way up the ladder into Management. At 17, I progressed to become a waitress, I loved chatting with diners, made them feel at home, laughed and joked with them. Because I gave them outstanding attention, never missing an opportunity to get them more drinks (more money in the till), push side orders that goes with what they picked and recommending the right wine (not that I drank wine, I just knew the wine list inside out) that got me a £25 tip
from a table of 2 on one occasion. It was not uncommon for me to take home £150 in tips on a Saturday night. That was more than a week’s wages! Furthermore I won the Mystery Diner Award, getting top marks and even the CEO came to award me my Certificate and Rewards because I gave the best customer service.
So giving great customer service looks good for your business, the customers love it so they stay loyal, the staff love it, especially when they get good feedback or tips, and your profits improve.
Immersive Customer Experience is a new trend
This trend, which has been around for a while now is all about what you deliver that makes your customers feel good about spending money with you. If you’re not sure what this is then you should be worried, as your business may not be in “touch” with your customers.
• Customers want the best possible experience from your business
• They want quality and choice when purchasing from you and they want to enjoy the experience
It’s all about the customer journey from the first moment they come across your business/brand, the browsing, purchasing and to the after sales service.
Have you got modern interactive technology to make life easier for the consumer to buy?
Do you speak in their language (I don’t mean a foreign language – are you inclusive of all abilities)?
Putting customer experience at the heart of your business and ensuring your employees are included in this strategy so their talent is retained that enable you to deliver on time products and services to your customers from an experienced and knowledgeable team is what you should be focusing on.

Buckie Choral
In Feb/March 2020 Lifestyle featured the Buckie Choral Union as they prepared to mark their 50th Anniversary with a magnificent performance of Handel’s Messiah in The Fishermen’s Hall. Unfortunately, that performance never took place, as we all know too well what happened next, and it has been three years before rehearsals were able to resume.
Angela Brooks, Chairman of Buckie Choral told Lifestyle how pleased the group is to once again be up and running. She said “We have been able to rehearse properly since the start of our season in August and prepared and performed a successful Christmas concert in St Peter's Church in Buckie. We are working on our Messiah concert in April, to celebrate our 50year anniversary.
“We are hoping to add more concerts to our normal routine with an Autumn concert planned for October as well as a Christmas Concert. Membership is increasing on a regular basis and all members enjoy the time they have singing together at Thursday rehearsals. I can't emphasise enough the benefits from making music together. Singing is particularly important because of the physical nature of the activity but it is also the
emotional aspects group activity that bring us all together to make music - something important for our mental health and well-being.”
The Choral Union came into being following a BBC ‘Songs of Praise’ brought together members of local church choirs. The Choral Union’s first conductor, John Fraser was one who came from its midst, and also Sandy Silbergh who went on to be Chairman for twenty five years.
Many readers I’m sure will remember Donald Barr the choir’s charismatic second conductor. Describing Donald one member said “With Donald it was great fun but a bit erratic, we sometimes wondered how on earth we managed to pull it off? But we always did.”
Conductor number three, Anne Corbet, took over in 2005 and retired in August 2022 after eighteen distinguished years. Anne was very
52 CHOIR
dedicated, and another member said of Anne “Once Anne had finished with us, we were so well rehearsed we could go on stage with confidence.”
Brian Smith has taken up the baton from Anne. Brian said “I am delighted to have taken over as conductor in August 2022. We are overjoyed to finally celebrate our 50th anniversary (COVID-delayed) with a performance of Handel's Messiah. We will have some fifty-five singers, plus four soloists and an orchestra of local players. We have representatives from other local choral societies with us and we are particularly pleased to have several young players in the orchestra, one university student and one pre-conservatoire school pupil.
“Singing was, perhaps, the most badly affected musical activity during COVID. Once restrictions were lifted in Scotland, weekly rehearsals restarted. Following a well-attended Christmas
concert in December 2022 in St. Peter's Church., Buckie, we started weekly rehearsals for Messiah. I look forward to this landmark occasion in the choir's long history - a time to celebrate the abundant local musical talent of Moray!”
The 50th Anniversary Concert Handel’s Messiah will be in the Fishermen’s Hall on Saturday 29th April at 7-30pm. Tickets are £10 available online from www.ticketsource. co.uk/buckie-choral-union and Right Medicine Pharmacy or from Choir members.

The Keith Traditional Music and Song Association returned to in person events in various venues around the town in 2022. After three long years it was great to see Keith buzzing again with the sound of traditional music and song. From the structured organised concerts and competitions to the informal impromptu music in various venues around the town, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
An amazing line up of guest artistes are once again coming along to entertain across the weekend: - Joe Aitken, Scott Gardiner, The Country Quines, Mayfield Group, Allan Taylor, Gordon Menzies, Bryan Gear and Martin Henderson, Rachel Carstairs and Kenneth McFarlane, Leonard Brown, Geordie Morison, The Cruickshank Family Band, to name but a few. I am sure there are many names there you recognise and maybe some not so well known but I am sure will be equally entertaining.
Friday night kicks off with a choice of Dancing to the Euan Galloway Scottish Dance Band in the Royal British Legion or you may prefer The Bothy Ballads and Ither Sangs in the Plough Inn Lounge. Both events are at 8pm 6-30pm on Saturday it’s the Prize-winners Concert in St. Thomas Hall, seeing the crème de la crème of the weekend’s performances.
Two concerts on Saturday at 8pm, the Royal Hotel or the Bowling Club, both with an array of talented performers.
Headlining the Royal Hotel concert will be Colin
Campbell Jr and Friends performing the Moray Suite which is a collection songs and stories about life on a farm through the four seasons. Told through the medium of multi media and a live show bringing together the songs in a unique storytelling experience.
As always competitions will be held morning and afternoon on the Saturday and there will be music sessions at numerous venues throughout the weekend.
The Bairns Ceilidh, where young or young at heart, are encouraged to come and participate or just listen will be held in the Bowling Club at 1pm Sunday.
And at 2pm, weather permitting, the very popular open air concert will take place in Reidhaven Square (contingence plan for the Royal British legion if the weather disappoints)
The traditional Farewell Concert will be at 7-30pm in the Royal Hotel, at the end of what will have been, I’m sure, another successful weekend of music and song.
Tickets will be available from 1st April from Mither Tongue, 165 Mid Street Keith or by contacting Sandy McCombie – 07740 173436.
The TMSA office this year will be in the Pop Up Shop, 145 Mid Street, Keith.

Fire Forge and Furnace – an exciting new venture in the North East of Scotland
Fire Forge and Furnace are a new business based in Huntly and working across Moray, Aberdeenshire and beyond! They offer a range of opportunities to take part in metal casting, forging and stone carving.
The creative driving force behind the business is Eden Jolly – supported by his wife Maxine. Eden has 30 years of experience in working in the field of sculpture and has worked casting bronze and iron as far away as Sweden, Latvia, Germany and America. Recently he decided to set up on his own and offer a range of workshops to people aged from 8 upwards (the oldest person to participate so far is 88!). Eden is also known as ‘Mr Melty’ due to the nature of his work!
One of the most popular courses is cuttlefish casting – this can be done using bronze or white metal. It is a great way for people to meet each other as they carve or press a simple design into a cuttlefish bone then help Eden pour the metal into the moulds using a hand cranked furnace. This creates a small cast. It is also an incredibly relaxing and soothing process, and is particularly suitable for younger participants.
Another option is bronze age casting - Eden has been working on a project called ‘Turf to Tools’ for a few years now, using methods from around 70 AD that were used in this area. This is known from archaeological finds locally, and from excavated mould remnants.
This process uses basic materialsbeeswax, clay, sand and horse manure. Hand pumped bellows and charcoal are used to heat the moulds over the furnace to melt out the wax and fire the clay to produce a small artefact such as a piece of jewellery or a figurine.
Forging is another opportunity to be creative and produce something - a forge session is an introduction to basic techniques, drawing out, scrolling, paired
NEW
BUSINESS
hammering to name but three! A bottle opener can be made using these techniques.
An Iron pour is particularly spectacular, especially at night –- sparks, flames, drama - better than any firework display. A few lucky people can assist, and the rest can watch the performance unfold.
It is not all just melting metal though – stone carving is also a great way to take some time for yourself and learn the basics of using a chisel - all out doors in the lovely scenery.
All of these options can be run as planned events organised by Fire Forge and Furnace and advertised by them or can be private and personalised to individual
requirements such as a big birthday party, stag or hen do. There can also be a ‘pic and mix’ approach – for example a cuttlefish carving for a hen do followed by a bronze pour. Fire Forge and Furnace can travel anywhere and bring all equipment and materials (including PPE) with them. Eden and Maxine are very keen to be able to offer these courses and events free of charge to marginalised groups – for example people with learning disabilities or mental health issues; families living in poverty; the elderly and young people who have disengaged from education. Eden has considerable experience of working with vulnerable individuals of all ages and is actively seeking funding to allow this to happen. Fire Forge and Furnace have also recently been involved in the ‘Art of Farming’ project in Aberdeenshire which seeks to support the mental health of farmers

The Story of a Community Connector - (Chime in Action)
Feeling connected is important to our wellbeing. For some people a helping hand can ease the way in to making new friends and getting involved in things we enjoy. A fellow human who has had challenges like us and has the confidence to try something alongside us is a great way forward. Moray Wellbeing Hub have been supporting the Community Connector role as a way of doing just that. Here we have the experience and what people gain from this through the experiences of one of the Community Connectors active in Moray today.
“The best thing about meeting up through the Community Connector project is engaging with somebody else; giving myself time to relax- no pressure! For me it was being out in nature, going for a walk, sharing thoughts and ideas and just having a conversation which sometime we don’t do. Sometimes we’re so focused on the work that we’re doing that we don’t have time to just be ourselves and reflect.
Being a community connector is really a fun thing to do. As a champion for Moray Wellbeing
Hub I feel that it helps me connect with the community and in particular with an individual who I can identify with. Someone I have something to share with, have something in common and it’s just a really positive thing to be involved in.
It makes me feel hopeful because it's a way of being positive. It’s a way of reaching out, it’s a way of sharing and a way of encouraging other people to explore, perhaps, different relationships. People feeling that they're valued and can take part in society in a different way or just have fun being with someone and discussing different options, going for a walk or just having a chat outside. It gives me a sense of identity because in my work I'm really quite stretched at times and feel that I don't have a lot
58 WELLBEING
of time to myself. Being a community connector has allowed me to have a breathing space. So although I’m actually connecting with somebody who’s said they feel they can do with a bit of support, it's a two-way thing. I'm there and I'm also receiving as well as giving.
It’s building a new relationship, getting to know somebody when it's a completely free time for me. There's no pressure, I can just take time out for myself and relax and not feel guilty that I'm not doing the 101 other things that i need to be doing at that moment in time!
It's very meaningful because that connecting with another human being is something that we all desire, that we all need. It gives meaning to the actual time spent together, and afterwards as well, reflecting on it. It hasn't got to have some ultimate aim or gain for anyone, it's very much about just sharing and being together and actually appreciating somebody else just for who they are and not for what they can do or what they can be, but just as another individual meeting up and sharing.
It empowers me because I can feel that this is me as an individual, not there as a as a mother or a boss or an employee. I feel empowered that it's me just being there and identifying as myself. I don't have to pretend or really there there's no great expectation on me to perform, I can be myself and engage with somebody else in a really low level but meaningful way.”
This story is the reflection of a Champion of Moray Wellbeing Hub who chose to be a Community Connector. It is taken from the film ‘Chime In Action | Being A Community Connector’.
Can you spare a couple of hours a week, or a fortnight, or a month, (you make it work for you), to meet a person who is feeling currently less connected or empowered, for an informal chat? It could be over a cuppa or whilst on a walk sharing peer experiences and increasing hope. Or you may want to go along together to a local group or activity where you both have a shared interest. Are you interested in increasing your own wellbeing as well as supporting others –Investing in a sense of meaning and purpose to progress in life? Community Connectors focus on a mutual trade of human resource - one human supports another to engage and connect in their local community. In return they are also helped to connect.

Another one you need to watch the date, is tickets for Phil and Aly at Fochabers Institute. This is being dubbed as Mayfest. Look out for release of tickets for the fantastic Speyfest. The draw for this one will be 5th May.
A lovely ‘you are my sunshine’ candle from The Town Planner can’t fail to put a smile on anyone’s face.
I am sure many Mums and Dad’s will appreciate the offer of £50 toward baby and child first aid classes and something we should all have, a First Aid Kit, all this from Mini First Aid will make sure you are prepared.
Last but not least the fabulous Keith Music Festival TMSA has offered tickets for Friday and Saturday concerts.
