The weekend of Friday 22nd July through to Sunday 24th saw Speyfest put themselves well and truly back on the Scottish folk music festival calendar. They definitely celebrated their 25th Anniversary in style. It was a very emotional weekend as of course their much-loved founder James Alexander sadly passed away earlier this year before seeing the 25 year milestone that he had put so much into.

The festival absolutely did James proud over the weekend and many tributes were paid to the amazing musical legacy that he has left.

On Sunday afternoon there was a special tribute performance by James’s musical friends Paul Anderson, Charlie McKerron, Gregor Borland, Douglas Lawrence, Duncan Chisholm, James MacGregor, Colin Campbell and Ian Grigor with Raemond Jappy on piano. Colin told the audience that he was honoured that James’s daughters had kindly given him permission to play James’s own fiddle for the day. Colin had hoped there was something special about the fiddle that had made James such a wonderful player, but he had to admit that no, it wasn’t down to the fiddle.

This performance was followed by the stage being flooded by a host of fiddlers who entertained the audience with some rousing favourites. The fiddlers including James’s daughter Clare were a true testament to James’s teaching and it is wonderful to know the music will live on in these fine young musicians.

SPEYFEST 25th ANNIVERSARY

A packed weekend of amazing music, craft fair, workshops and tastings left a very satisfied four thousand plus visitors to the Fochabers Speyfest tented village.

There was something for everyone with over seventy musicians and thirty nine performances split between the Bothy stage and the Whisky stage. There was singing and dancing all day and well into the night.

Speyfest is very much a family friendly festival, and it was wonderful to see the children enjoying the music and dancing along in front of the stage.

It had been at least twelve years since Makarakit had played together but they made a special return performance just for Speyfest’s 25th Anniversary.

On Friday night on the Bothy stage the Red Hot Chilli Pipers had the marquee jumping into the wee small hours.

The finale on Sunday night saw Skerryvore take to the stage, they raised the roof and Speyfest 25 went out on a high.

There are many people to thank, that made Speyfest happen, from sponsors to committee and volunteers but of course not least the man who started it all, James Alexander MBE What a legacy! See you all next year!

PAWS ON PLASTIC

Have you ever gone out for a walk, perhaps in one of our many local beauty spots or maybe on the beach, to exercise the dog or get some steps in, only to find a sea of discarded litter and rubbish? Plastic bottles, carrier bags, crisp packets, the list is endless. Unfortunately, litter has become as much a part of our landscape as the sky above and the grass below. However one local lady, Marion Montgomery, has established a charity to tackle the problem. Yes, Paws on Plastic is an initiative that has seen widespread following in countries across the world.

Marion explains a little more about her background and how she came to found Paws on Plastic. She says, “I’ve lived in Stonehaven with my family - my husband and two kids - for about twenty years now apart from a couple of years living and working as a family in Stavanger in Norway. I’m originally from Ayrshire. I’ve always lived by the sea and love Stonehavenit’s a great wee community and very friendly.

“I’m a primary school teacher and started Paws on Plastic nearly four years ago while off on long term sick leave after shingles which left me with low energy.

“I started Paws on Plastic as a Facebook group when I was ill. It gave me a focus, a community and a sense of achievement that if I’d done little else in the day, I had gone out for a walk with my dog and helped make a simple, visible difference that would help protect animals and the environment.

8

“As part of my school research for teaching Eco, I came across a course run by the British Council encouraging people to start a social action in their local community focusing on plastic pollution and this was an obvious choice as my dogs have always picked up plastic bottles in the park. It’s as if dogs have been telling us to do it for years and we’ve only just cottoned on. “We became a charity in September 2021. It’s a very simple idea - we encourage dog owners to pick up a couple of pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities and the environment as well as educating on the consequences of littering.”

From what may have started as a small community initiative, Paws on Plastic has grown incredibly. Marion explains, “The feedback has been fantastic. We have received great media coverage, been runners-up in RSPB Nature of Scotland Awards and the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Awards. Our Facebook group has members from over 70 countries worldwide and many members have gone on to get involved in local litter-picking groups or started ones in their own communities. “Our ultimate aim is to make picking up a few pieces of litter just a normal part of an everyday dog walk. With 22,000 members and followers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter even if they only pick up two pieces on an average of two daily walks that’s over 30 million pieces removed every year. With over 13.5 million dogs in the UK the potential is huge! all are very welcome to join - check out our website. The idea is that if we all do a little it adds up to a huge impact. I’d love to see Paws on Plastic continue to grow and ultimately become the norm. The more people see it being done, the more normal it becomes.

Marion also adds, “There are huge mental health benefits to be gained from such simple positive actions - something so simple and the beautiful thing is that it’s open to all, regardless of personal situation and only takes a minute. We are all part of a beautiful community joined by the oceans, our love of dogs and our desire to do our part to protect them. It’s easy to feel powerless about things but we all have the power to make a difference.”

Doggie Do 2022

The second Doggie Do event was held in 2021 at Aberlour Villa Football Pitch run by the Aberlour and Speyside Rotary. What a fabulous day it was with a great turnout and the weather was kind to them too.

Unfortunately, with the Rotary Club no longer able to continue it looked like the event was to be short lived until Kelly of Dacie Grey Home Boarding agreed to take it on.

This year it is on 20th August from 11am at the Aberlour Villa Football Pitch and the proceeds will go to Aberlour Primary School Parent Council.

So, if you think your four legged friend is the best pup, best golden oldie or just has the waggiest tail then there will definitely be a class for you to enter. There are ten fun classes to choose from.

There will be a rosette and goody bag for first, second and third places.

The Best in Show will be judged from the winners of all the classes and the winner receives a £100 voucher from sponsors, Speyside Gardens Caravan Park. The reserve

will receive a luxury hamper kindly donated by The Spey Larder.

Entries are taken on the day at 11am and the first class starts at 12-30pm sharp.

This is bound to be a very entertaining day for all dog lovers and Speysound Radio will be there to broadcast all that is going on. Many stalls for you to visit including plenty food and drink available.

Make sure you get tickets for their fabulous raffle, with some absolutely amazing prizes to be won. The raffle will be drawn live at the event at 3pm.

Parking is available at Alice Littler Park. Have a fun day!

“I wanted to get involved because I had a traumatic birth myself and did not really feel greatly supported through my post-natal experience. I want to make positive impacts within the community and help improve services.” shares Viki one of the parents involved in delivering the project.

The hope is that the project will create learning to help improve peer-support in Moray, once all the information is gathered there will be an event in November all parents with infants are welcome. The impact of working together on the project as a group has clearly been a key factor in why the parents enjoy the project so much.

Mental health challenges in pregnancy and early parenthood can be viewed as stigmatising, both for mothers and fathers, which can stop people getting the help they need to get better. This not only affects parents but their infants and their wider family. Peer-support, where those who have experienced similar challenges support others, has been shown to be successful for many people in improving their sense of connection, hope and empowerment. Whilst many people are aware of post-natal depression other less common challenges like psychosis in pregnancy can also be an issue. Additionally, more common wellbeing challenges around

The project is funded by a grant from The Ideas Fund, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust and delivered by the British Science Association with coordination locally by Science Ceilidh. The Fund enables the UK public to think about, develop and test new ideas related to areas of mental wellbeing that are relevant to them. This is one of a number of research projects running in 2022 where lived experience is leading understanding of what works well for Moray and Highland people.

Supporting Women in Agriculture

Mairi Gougeon, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands

Iwas delighted to recently announce additional funding for initiatives to deliver greater equality for women in agriculture and help young farmers become the boardroom leaders of the future.

The future Women in Agriculture Business Skills Training project will receive £100,000 per year for the next three years, while funding to the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs will see board members develop their leadership skills to create greater diversity in the boardrooms of the future.

Among the projects to be supported by an overall package of more than £400,000 is the Women in Agriculture Practical Training Fund, which has helped more than 750 trainees to attend practical training courses including tractor and trailer driving, sheepdog handling and chainsaw use since its launch last year.

We are committed to building a fairer society and part of that includes enabling all women living or working in Scottish agriculture to have equality of opportunity.

This untapped potential is critical to helping our agricultural businesses to be more resilient and able to diversify, meeting the needs of changing markets.

We want to see more women joining those who are already developing a career in Scottish agriculture, which is why it’s important women are given these opportunities in what has been a very maledominated area.

We all have a pivotal role to play in implementing the changes needed to deliver a sustainable future for Scottish agriculture.

The future will bring challenges that will impact us all, but I am totally focused on how we can support our agricultural industry and our rural economy to be resilient and sustainable. The projects we are supporting ensure women will be a key part in a vital industry that is also helping to meet the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Windsurfing has been around since the 70’s and with the invention of kite surfing around the millennium, paddle boarding around 2008, and now wing foiling coming on to the scene you may think windsurfing is on the decline, but Loch Insh has a thriving windsurfing club and is the perfect place to learn and progress. Where clean south westerly winds funnel down the Spey valley, 2022 has been the windiest year on record at the centre, so many paddle boarders who are now sick of the choppy water are jumping at the chance to try getting blown along either on a windsurfer of or the new craze wing foiling. As Activities Director Jonny Freshwater explains, ‘Wing foiling is

a bit of a hybrid using the same technology they use in kite surfing you use a lightweight wing which creates just enough power to get the ‘hydrofoil’ boards up to speed so you can hover over the water (the boards have a fin, so the board raises up off the water reducing the friction). It’s a fabulous feeling and not particularly difficult to master with the great equipment we have at the centre. Once on the hydrofoil the board responds the same as a surfboard on a wave or snowboarding in powder! So we are seeing surfers and snowboarders picking it up really quickly’.

‘Wings are also great fun in the winter where you can hang on to it and blast across the frozen loch on skates or skis. which is a really fun way to learn to fly the wing. Hydrofoils have also made their way into the

windsurfing world as the new Olympic class is called IQfoil, we are proud to have two of our windsurf club competing with the best in the world. Islay Watson vice world champion 2 years running and Andy Brown winning 1st place in the season opening regatta in 2022. Marseille will be the host for the 2024 Olympic regatta with the strong winds playing to both our Scots strengths. They stand a good chance should either of them get picked to represent Britain, and it all started here with the Loch Insh Saturday windsurf club which we run all summer season from April to October.’

Islay tells us a bit of her story: “My windsurfing journey started when I was around nine years old. I spent the summer holidays, as many kids from the local area do, participating in various sports and activity weeks. During this time, I had the chance to experience all of the activities that the Loch Insh Outdoor Centre has to offer, both on the water and on dry land, but after trying windsurfing for the first time I wanted more. Despite windsurfing being one of the more challenging sports, and me not being very good at all, I think what attracted me to it more than anything else was that it always allowed me to be in or near the water.

“Staying dry was not an option! And later down the line when I had eventually mastered the art of staying on the board, I enjoyed the feeling of freedom it gave me to use just the power of the wind to go anywhere. As time went on and I slowly gained more skill and confidence on the board I became addicted to the pursuit of always trying to go faster and further, and then when I was eventually introduced to racing,

that was the final piece of the puzzle. It pushed me to always try to be better and showed me a more competitive side of myself that was not always so prominent. Most importantly for me, through this whole journey I have never stopped making friends. Although I loved windsurfing, what always kept me coming back for more even when it got tough was the awesome group of friends I had made along the way. People I would have never met if I hadn’t found this crazy sport and who turned out to be some of my very best friends.

“What started as a childhood hobby at Loch Insh all those years ago has somehow turned into my dream job. I am now a full-time professional windsurfer and part of the British Sailing Team. I travel the world training and competing, with the ultimate goal of winning an Olympic medal. Whether I achieve that goal or not, windsurfing has had a huge influence on my life, and I wouldn’t change it.”

Laura McNally, CEO at Loch Insh said “Personally, I have to say I’m inspired, but I might take the time to master wind surfing before I take on wing foiling. I’ve also been lucky enough to canoe, kayak, paddleboard and wild swim at the centre, and failing that there’s always the good old pedalo (perfect for watching the kids on our latest attraction - the floating Jungle gym, but that’s a whole other article)!”

Loch Insh, Uath Lochan’s and River Feshie circuit

Tracy undertakes lovely walks all over our beautiful country and we are delighted she has agreed to provide Lifestyle readers with the inside knowledge that she has gleaned from her many adventures.

I hope you enjoy Tracy’s walks? Please do let us know and send us some photos. Follow Tracy goes outside on Facebook (www.facebook.com/tracygoesoutside)

Iheaded to the beautiful Cairngorms for this walk which takes in Loch Insh, The stunning Uath Lochan’s and the River Feshie. This walk is a very peaceful walk in the wilderness with plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting. I had several sightings of birds of prey along the way. The walk starts off at the

Distance: 7 ¾ miles

Time: 3 ½ - 4hrs

Level: Easy long walk with some elevation.

Terrain: Mix of forestry track and paths with a small amount of quiet road walking.

Access: Arrive by car following the signposts for Kincraig/Loch Insh outdoor adventure centre PH21 1NU. I did ask permission to park at the centre. There is a regular Stagecoach No 35 bus from Aviemore which is about a 20min walk from the Outdoor centre.

Loch Insh Outdoor Centre which is a fantastic facility offering a large array of activities as well as accommodation.

In the car park head down to the shore and you will see a sign for the Loch side trail which is part of the Badenoch way. This is a very well waymarked and easy to follow section with great views across the Loch and the first opportunity for wildlife spotting.

Leaving the waterside carry on following the waymarkers through the woods till you come to a road with a house opposite. Cross the road here and turn right just after the house you will find an opening to re-join the path. The path is rather narrow here but only for a short time. Keep on the waymarked trail and you will come to a fork and take the path to the left here. There is a long straight section the Badenoch way turns off here to the right this is where you

18

leave the way as you will carry straight on. About 250 yards after the Badenoch way turn off, you will take a left turn where you will find red trail markers.

Here you will head up in to Farleitter Crag where you will find a fantastic view of Loch Insh before you are looking down on the Uath Lochan’s once you have enjoyed the views the trail will start going downhill till you come to a junction take a left here after a short walk you will come to another junction where you will take a right to take you to the Lochan’s. This is a fantastic place to stop for a picnic with stunning views of the beautiful Lochans.

Carry on the trail before taking the next left, you come to a road. Take a right and walk along the road for a short stretch till you come to an opening to a house road end. Go into the opening and turn to your left you will find a right of way sign. Follow this sign passing by the houses. You will come to a U-shaped house and take the path to the right here. Carry on here till you come to the side of the River Feshie. As

you walk along the path you will feel like you are in total wilderness with only the wildlife for company! There are plenty of opportunities if you want to dip your feet in the beautiful clear waters.

Keep following the path right along the riverside till you come to some houses then Feshie bridge on your right. You will find a path just along from the bridge to the right of the road. Follow the path along till you reach a small car park which then leads you to the Frank Bruce Sculpture Trail which is starting to be reclaimed by nature as it was meant. The trail is worth the detour or take the path to the right which you will find is waymarked for the East Highland way. Follow the waymarkers you will come to a farm, the path will take a left before reaching a junction.

At the junction take a right joining the Badenoch way again which you will follow till you return to the Loch Insh Outdoor Centre. Which is now a perfect time for coffee and cake at the Boathouse Bar and a well-earned rest!

Elly Jay

It could be said that the Highlands of Scotland are an unusual springboard for treading the boards of London’s glitzy West End and yet for Elly Jay, a homegrown starlet from Aberdeenshire - Fraserburgh, there could be no other way for her to journey the yellow brick road to fame. We chat to Elly Jay as she is currently making her West End debut in Pretty Woman.

Elly discusses her earliest influences as a singer/ dancer, saying, “I always knew that I wanted to sing, dance and act. I started with dance classes back home when I was young, and I also did choir. I went to Fraserburgh Academy and after that I went to Edinburgh to study performing. Initially I was accepted for a dance teaching course but my course actually got cut due to several schools merging.

“It was suggested that I audition for MGA Academy of Performing Arts, also in Edinburgh, and I was the last student to get in as most colleges had already done their yearly intake. I graduated three years later in 2015 and other than Covid, I haven’t stopped working. My first professional job was on the Britannia P&O cruise liner, although I had been in professional pantos during college.”

Elly gives a behind the scenes insight into her role at Pretty Woman, commenting, “My current role is First Cover Vivian and Female Ensemble Swing. Swing means I cover all seven female

24
SHOW BUSINESS

ensemble tracks and I go on whenever someone is sick, injured or on holiday. The same goes for the lead role. It is a job where you really have to be prepared, ready and focused as you find out on the day who you are going on for that night. The past month I’ve been extremely lucky as our leading lady - Aimie Atkinson, has been off filming for another musical. Meaning I had four weeks on as the leading lady - Vivian Ward!”

How does Elly like to prepare before an audition? “Banana and coffee! I’ll have to warm up my voice, go over my material - preparation is key, remind myself that if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. Performers always analyse everything after an audition and whether what we did in the room was enough. It’s hard being rejected but you’ve got to move onto the next. It’s having the art of letting go.”

Although the theatre world can seem like a completely golden affair, hard work is required as Elly explains. “Any performer will tell you that through their time in college, it is hard work. These schools are training you for how it’ll be in the industry and the professional world can be quite tough. It’s good to see that the industry is also changing for equality. It’s not as ‘type cast now-a-days’. Before, if you were auditioning for a particular role, you had to be this size, this height, this look, this skin colour. But the industry is changing to be more versatile and it’s incredible to see!”

What advice would Elly give for budding performers? She says, “Follow your dreams and stick to them, dreams aren’t supposed to be easy, it’s not plain sailing. No one can give you that determination other than yourself. Go see a show, remind yourself why you love performing. Remind yourself why it’s your dream. If it was easy, everyone would have their dream job!”

This year we are excited as ever to welcome the community and visitors to Huntly Hairst on Saturday 3rd September from 9am to 4pm. Our annual celebration of rural life gives us the opportunity to showcase our beautiful town and the wonderful produce that is made in Aberdeenshire. The Hairst is a unique annual harvest festival taking place in Huntly. This family event established in 2002, celebrates the food and traditions of Aberdeenshire. It has something for everyone, from an extended farmers market and craft fair to cookery demonstrations and competitions. This year we are delighted with the response, and we are able offer over sixty food stalls filling the main square with produce from all round Aberdeenshire, and further afield. We have bread, cheeses, meats, locally made cider, craft beers, street food and much more. To compliment this, we have a craft fair in the Gordon Arms hotel with twenty five local crafters selling their handmade artisan wares. Visit the Stewarts Hall to support the coffee morning supporting food insecurity, then in the afternoon it will be, The Great Hairst Menu, two Chefs will compete to produce the best Scottish menu for our judges with challenging ingredients. The Larder on Gordon Street is the place where you can view all the beautiful cakes entered in

ROSIE BARRON IS THE TIDY COO

Rosie Barron is The Tidy Coo, a Professional Organiser. A Master

KonMari Consultant and member of APDO (the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers).

She helps overwhelmed people to create space and peace in their homes and lives. Rosie lives in Aberdeenshire with her husband, four Home Educated children, nine ponies, six dogs, cats, bunnies, chickens, ducks and fish which all bring joy.

Decluttering Outdoors

As we enjoy the warmth of the summer months, we can move outdoors to do our decluttering as it is much more pleasant to attack the shed, garden and garage when there is less risk of our fingers falling off with cold!

Before you start, check in with your vision for your outdoor spaces. How would you like your garage/shed/ garden to look? What do you actually want to store in these areas? How do you want to use these areas?

Many garages and outdoor spaces that I go into are full to bursting, so you may need to choose a good weather day to pull everything out so that you can put it into categories. For example categories such as tools, decorating equipment,

outdoor toys, gardening equipment and so on. Have a look at each category and see how many of each item you have. Is it the right amount? Remember, decluttering is not about letting everything go, but about keeping the right number of things to support you. If you live in a serviced apartment in the city, your tool needs will be far fewer than if you live in a large rural property. If you are someone who always calls a handy man in, you will need fewer tools than the handy man who is always called in!

Many of the items stored outside of the home will be more practical than beautiful, but practical items definitely have a place in our lives –you may or may not love that screwdriver, but you will love how it stops you breaking a knife when you try to use one to loosen a screw instead.

Practical things have a tendency to proliferate because, even if they don’t use them, people don’t want to let them go for fear that it might be a waste. Think on this point though; what could be more of a waste than things that are left to moulder or rust in a cupboard because they are not being used? So before you worry

about letting something go because it is a waste, consider how much you use it, and also whether or not you could borrow it from someone if you suddenly needed it.

There are many groups that will take excess tools off your hands, such as Mens’ sheds and places like schools may take gardening equipment for clubs. If you have any large garden toys in good condition, then try your local nursery. Destiny Partnership, a local social enterprise, will take any electrical equipment, regardless of whether it works or not. Failing finding a home such as these, remember that even being recycled is a good next step for many things.

If you are discarding paint (and you’d be surprised how quickly paint goes “off” and needs discarding), then check whether or not your local recycling centre takes it as sometimes it needs to be taken to a specialised centre. For more ideas on where to donate and recycle stuff, do head over to my website and look under the “Sustainability” tab.

Once you have decided what to keep, check that it is in good order. A while back, I was decorating my utility room and I was cursing the quality of the paint that I was using, until I switched paint brushes and realised that the paint was fine, it was the brush that was the issue. Even though it had been properly cleaned when I had last used it, it was getting past its useful life and needed replacing. Ensure that the equipment is clean and if anything needs mending or sharpening, then investigate how and where that can be done.

Once the decluttering side of this is done, have a think about the organising. The most useful

outside spaces that I have come across are not always the most beautiful, but they are well thought out. Storing like with like is hugely beneficial for being able to find things later and being able to find things means that you won’t waste money replacing the things that you already have.

I use zones in my own garage, so I have a zone for DIY, a zone for things for the car, a zone for outdoor toys and so on. Within the zones, I store things on good quality shelving and make use of decent storage boxes. For example, within the DIY zone, I have a large box with all the painting and decorating equipment in it and anytime that I need to paint, I know that it is all there. The box is stored near the paints and the tools.

I hope that this was helpful – I do love to hear from people who have put some of these ideas in to practice, so drop me a line!

Gray Composting Services, located near Fordyce, will celebrate 15 years of business later this year, after being established in late 2007 by the Gray family. Having already been involved in farming in the area for over 70 years, the family recognized that due to changes in legislation, forced upon the waste and agricultural industries, along with over reliance upon pesticide use, inorganic fertilizers (which have soared in price recently due to the war in Ukraine), rising energy costs and increasing food waste and landfill reliance, meant there was something that they as a business could do to help.

The business processes organic wastes such as food waste, garden waste, untreated wood, fish processing waste, maltings waste etc from both the private and public sector. These wastes, which would previously have ended in landfill,

are collected by their two lorries, in either skips or wheelie bins (ranging from 120, 240 and 500 litre bins up to 35 cubic yard skips), are then transformed, during a 9 week process, into a high nutrient compost. This compost is all used directly on the family farms to produce a range of crops including potatoes and barley. It is all part of a circular economy, which sees the food waste produced in many businesses such as food production, hotels, restaurants, cafes, chip shops, schools, care homes and distilleries forming the building blocks to produce more food.

Customers are based as far as Macduff in the east to Findhorn/ Forres in the west and as far inland as Dufftown in the south. They are provided with everything they need to start their food waste collections including the bins,

kitchen caddies and compostable liners. Collections are tailored to the customers’ needs and frequency can be varied through the seasons, from weekly to fortnightly, or even monthly and staff are always on hand to provide support and advice whenever required.

The benefits of diverting the types of wastes utilised by Gray Composting Services away from landfill and into compost are wide and varied. The methane that would be produced from the landfill sites is 84 times more potent as a greenhouse gas, than CO2 in the short term, and when converted to compost and used on agricultural land, it can then actually sequester carbon. Other benefits include protecting agricultural land from soil erosion, increasing disease suppression and therefore a reduced requirement for chemicals, increased resilience to floods and droughts, increases in soil fertility, nutrient storage capability, soil structure and water retention to name but a few. That’s why, more than ever, USING GRAY MATTERS!

NORTH EAST OPEN STUDIOS

- creative spirit stronger than ever

Artists and creative makers across the North East of Scotland will once again be taking part in one of the biggest Open Studios events held in the country this September. Covering an area from Montrose to Inverness, North East Open Studios (NEOS) will take place between 10-18th September and will feature a wealth of creative talent across the area.

Commenting, chair of NEOS 22, Lynne StaplesScott said, “North East of Scotland is home to an astonishing number of creative people who have skills ranging from traditional wood and stone carving to digital art. The nine day long Open Studios event is a great opportunity for the general public to visit some of these often hidden gems and meet the artists to find out more about what they do”.

Jill Mackenzie Alanda Calmus Brian Cook Shand Fiona Duckett

This year, I am delighted to say that we have nearly 400 creators and makers taking part. Some are taking part as individuals while others are listed as part of a group. Many of us are able to invite visitors into our own studios or workspaces, while others are in shared spaces or independent venues…but wherever you find us, you can be sure of a warm welcome.”

In a ‘normal’ year, it is estimated that approximately 20,000 visits are made to NEOS members over the nine days, making it a significant event in the calendar of the North East of Scotland.

To find details of artists taking part in NEOS in your area, visit www.northeastopenstudios.co.uk or look out for the distinctive yellow catalogue in various local outlets.

NAIRN is gearing up to host up to 250 vehicles when Wheels of Nairn, a classic and modern vehicle show, returns to the seaside town.

Wheels of Nairn which Lifestyle Magazine is supporting, will take place at the Links on September 24 and Nairn BID, who have organised the event, have been thrilled with the response.

The one-day celebration of classic and modern vehicles will showcase a medley of cars and motorbikes owned by enthusiasts from across the region. A number of producers and crafters will also be present alongside food vendors and entertainment for all the family.

Lucy Harding, Nairn BID manager, said “After a twoyear break, we are thrilled to be putting on Wheels of Nairn for a second time. It first ran in 2019 and was an unexpected success. That year we attracted around 200 vehicles, the sun shone, and the Links was packed with

people who wanted to see what it was all about.

“This year we are aiming for a maximum of 250 vehicles, and we are already well on the way to achieving that. What we need now is for the sun to shine like it did in 2019.”

WHEELS OF NAIRN

Lucy explained why the BID has created a successful events calendar which includes Taste of Nairn: a three-day food and drink festival, street markets and the Countdown to Christmas event: “One of Nairn BID’s remits is to create events that will benefit and drive footfall to the town and it was proven that Wheels of Nairn did just that. As well as the exhibitors we have around 20 stallholders, food outlets and of course we will be encouraging visitors to wander around the town and explore the High Street as well.

What we really want to see is people coming to Wheels of Nairn, but then exploring further as well. We really hope that people will visit Nairn and spend the day, if not longer here, and enjoy all that it has to offer. It will be a great day out for all.”

Title sponsor for the event is Nairn Car Sales, a rebrand of the car sales operating at local family-run business West End Garage.

Dean said the business was delighted to be involved in Wheels of Nairn and was looking forward to the event.

“Nairn BID is doing a fantastic job at bringing opportunities to the town and in making it look great, it’s really important that we grasp these and make sure that people visit the town to see how lovely it is.”

Five Ways To Set Yourself Up For The Best Birth Possible

Pregnant? Starting to think about what your baby’s birth might be like? Wondering how you’ll cope and what you should be doing now?

The second trimester is known as the happy trimester because (hopefully) most of those queasy feelings have passed and you’re settling into life with a growing bump. It’s also a brilliant time to start preparing for birth. This is not about packing a hospital bag, though you can do that too if you really want, this is about getting your head and your heart in the right place.

When you hold onto reservations, or great big fearful thoughts about birth you create tension in your body which makes your contractions less effective and more painful because your body is working against itself.

The solution? To retrain your mind and body to feel calm. How do you do that?

1) Flood your mind with positive stories about birth by watching birth videos online and following the accounts of birth workers and hypnobirthing teachers that you find inspiring. Start talking to people who had positive birth experiences; they do exist, but sometimes their voices are hidden because they don’t want to be seen as the ‘smug mum’ if someone else they know had a traumatic experience.

2) Learn breathing techniques. The breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. When you maintain a steady breath throughout your contractions you give your uterus (your womb) the blood supply and oxygen it needs to perform at its optimum which means

more comfortable and effective contractions. A simple breath you can use for stage one labour is to breathe in to a count of four, and breathe out to a count of eight. You are looking to increase the length of the exhalation so any number over four is what you’re aiming for (don’t worry if you can’t reach eight). Breathing techniques can be learnt from a prenatal yoga or hypnobirthing teacher. You’ll also want to learn breathing techniques for stage two labour.

3) Start to think positively about the hospital (if that’s where you’re giving birth). Recently several of my first-time mums have told me how nervous they feel just by setting foot in the hospital car park. Not surprisingly, they associate hospitals with being ill, losing a loved one or feeling stressed and anxious. Instead, start to notice the level of compassion and care that goes on there (even if it’s only noticeable in one or two people). Remember that many of the people parking their cars are there because they love someone. Notice the brightly coloured signage and count the smiles. All of these things make a difference!

4) Get informed. Enrol in a birth preparation course and learn about your birthing options; in a good course this will include birth positions and the importance of an active labour.

5) Talk to your birth partner. Don’t expect your birth partner to just ‘know what to do’, even if they’ve done it before. Tell them what support looks and feels like to you.

I hope you’ve found this helpful! Remember, this is the only time you’ll ever get to give birth to this baby so make it as calm and comfortable as you can for both of you.
