WHEN THE NEW BENTLEY GT CAME TO MORAY

I
f you follow some of Aberdeenshire’s best luxury hotels on social media you will have come across the images of the stunning new Bentley Continental GT Convertible which was used to showcase the North East 250 Route. In Partnership with Bentley Motors, the North East 250 and some of the region’s best hotels, the founder of Geared Life Magazine took the opportunity to drive to many of the route’s castles, distilleries and most scenic spots while test driving one of the most sumptuous sports cars released this year. Bentley celebrated 100 years last July, the new Bentley Continental GT was released to mark the brand’s centennial year as the ultimate ‘Grand Tourer’ inspired by the Voyages of Discovery undertaken by young men and women of British nobility in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

The car is spectacular to drive, it’s smooth, incredibly powerful and has the most luxurious interior, it isn’t difficult to see why so many members of the public were sharing images of the GT parked outside a few of Moray’s best tourist attractions. Aberdeenshire’s castles were the perfect background for such a striking model and added extra depth to Bentley’s historical celebration: one hundred years of Bentley in the shape of an outstanding machine right next to centuries of Scottish history in the shape of some of Scotland’s oldest and most precious buildings. The Bentley Continental GT received the most attention outside the Station Hotel in Rothes as a number of petrolheads stopped by to admire the car and were in awe filming the roof go up and down. It takes only 19 seconds for the roof to go down and the process is surprisingly silent, you can’t help but smile watching it as every part falls beautifully into place, such a lovely
example of successful automotive engineering. The experience at the hotel was a good match for the luxurious Bentley as the driver stayed in the magnificent Caperdonich Suite which is filled with personalised touches and boasts a mezzanine floor with a Victorian-style freestanding bath as well as an emperor-size four-poster Hypnos bed. At the bottom of the bed, guests find a lovely box of remote controls that can be used for mood lighting, curtains and two flat screen TVs. At Ballindalloch Castle (which besides being a truly stunning castle open to the public is also the North East 250 Route’s HQ), visitors were 3
fascinated by the world’s first three-way rotating dashboard, one of the Bentley Continental GT’s unique features. Drivers can choose between three different fascia panels: a styled instrument panel with three handcrafted analogue dials displaying the outside temperature, a compass and a chronometer; the default 12.3” high resolution touchscreen; or simply beautiful blank wood veneer. Watching the dashboard rotate reminds us of James Bond’s car gadgets, it brings extra fun and style to the driving experience. Local diners at the popular Banchory Lodge Hotel were delighted to see the Bentley Continental GT for the first time and were dumbfounded when they found out that despite weighing 2,414kg, the new model goes from zero to 60mph in 3.7 seconds and stops incredibly quickly as well. The GT was a good conversation starter among diners as the car was parked right outside the front door. Some of the best pictures of the Bentley Continental GT were taken by the beach a few minutes away from The Cullen Bay Hotel, which is situated in a rather special spot. From the hotel’s restaurant guests enjoy spectacular views of the sea while they take the opportunity to try their award-winning Cullen Skink and locally sourced produce. The result of the photo shoot was published in The Daily Record as part of the campaign promoting the car and the North East 250 route. The entire North East 250 route is filled with scenic roads and perfect locations for picnics and pit stops; driving through this part of Scotland is genuinely a pleasure. The roads are really good, smooth and a lot less busy than other beautiful regions of Scotland, finding hotels with last minute availability isn’t as difficult and if you are either a castle or a whisky lover, you will be 4
spoilt for choice. There are over 260 castles in Aberdeenshire alone and so many distilleries to visit that if you are planning to travel for a few days you won’t even need to drive further. Our advice is: If you are taking a Bentley Continental GT when you visit Moray, get ready for plenty of attention and don’t be surprised if you find pictures of your car on social media.

Thrash in
the Park the 10th 26th October 2019 is in the Park anniversary of Thrash
I
t all started in 2009 when Kris Taylor decided to organise a demolition derby for fun for his birthday.
The next year he decided to do it all again but this time he would raise money for charity. This event has grown from strength to strength over the years. There are so many enthusiasts wanting to take part each year and hundreds more come along, who love to watch this wonderful day of enthralling entertainment. This year is limited to 170 cars and every one of those places was highly sought after. On the day the car enthusiasts are invited to come along and take part in races round a track. There are a few challenges on route if they choose to attempt them, often at their peril. Lots of them decorate their cars too. If you search the 2018 event page on Facebook you’ll find lots of photos and videos.

Last year’s event raised £13,000 for cancer charities and over the years, Kris with the help of the rest of the family, sister Becky, brother Steven and Dad Ronnie and their many helpers have raised approximately £30,000 which is a fantastic achievement. This year Thrash in the Park takes place on Saturday, 26th October between 11am-5pm at Drum Farm, Keith only £2 entry for spectators (children free). There is also a BBQ and raffles bring your wallet and dig deep it’s for a great cause. They are looking for sponsors for the event and also raffle donations. FIREWOMEN RECRUITMENT
K
eith Community Fire Station held a Women’s Only Night on Wednesday 25th of September to try and encourage more women to join the service, as up until now the job has been male dominant and for some reason, doesn’t seem to have appealed to women. Kevin Mitchell, Watch Manager at Keith, would like this to change and had the idea to run this event a few weeks ago. After receiving the green light to go ahead with this event he sought the help of Neesha Rolla, Firefighter at Huntly. Kevin felt that women interested in the service would feel more comfortable, find it easier and more informative if they were able to speak to a female firefighter and to hear about her experiences and views of the service. Neesha was delighted to be able to share her experiences, talk to women who were interested and provide them with all the information they required such as what is expected as a firefighter, training, hours of work and requirements to join the service including good eyesight (aided or unaided) and a high level of fitness with good upper body strength. As well as speaking to Neesha there was a tour of the station and equipment that is used which included trying on breathing apparatus (BA) masks to make sure no one suffered from claustrophobia. Firefighters work on three different shift patterns, 120 hour, 90 hour and Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. The 120 and 90 hour shifts involve being on call during the evenings and weekends with two days off per week. These shifts tend to be better staffed as they can be worked around other jobs, although permission must be sought from employers to make sure they are happy for this to happen. All firefighters are paid a retainer with an hourly wage when they are
10
called out. All firefighters must be no more than 7 minutes away from the station when they are on call, and are only required to be at the station during an emergency, except on Tuesday nights when training takes place between 7pm and 9.30pm. In addition to this you would also be required to attend the training centre at Portlethen for 2 weeks to learn about ladders and pumps when you first join the service, followed by a 2 week breathing apparatus (BA) course 6 months later. All additional training that you would be required to take part in would then take place at weekends. Since setting up this event Kevin is delighted to announce that there is now a female firefighter based in Keith but there is still one position open. Even if you are outwith 7 minutes of Keith Fire Station there are many positions available all over Moray and Aberdeenshire and Kevin can put you in contact with your nearest Fire Station.

limate change was the major theme in the Programme for Government, and Scotland’s farmers and crofters are on the frontline. Farming offers many solutions and it was encouraging that the First Minister recognised that Scottish agriculture is already playing its part in helping to reduce emissions. I encourage people and organisations in the rural economy to read the Programme for Government and the range of commitments seeking to protect rural Scotland’s future - https://www.gov.scot/ programme-for-government/ In the coming year, we intend to plant 24 million more trees (12,000 hectares), set up an e-commerce platform for food and drink businesses, give ourselves powers to change EU CAP rules, and enable more housing to be built in rural areas. We will also work with employers to encourage more EU nationals working in the rural economy to stay in Scotland, regulate to improve sustainability of fish farming and support Scotland’s chefs - rural economy will play its part to end climate change through actions in the agriculture transformation programme, a report on findings from the Beef Efficiency Scheme, developing an environmental action plan for food and drink sector and our forestry agency switching 10% of vehicles to electric. We have good plans for a thriving rural Scotland

wonderful new shop has opened its doors in Lossiemouth.
Alison Ruickbie had the idea for some time to open a shop in her home town that would help in the fight to cut down single use plastic and food waste in our homes. Alison found 4 Queen St which was ideal for her new venture. The Re:Store, Moray was born. Alison opened her doors at the end of September and has been overwhelmed by the support from locals and visitors from further afield who are delighted that this amazing shop is now available in Moray. The Re:Store is a “refillery”, that is, you bring your own containers (must be clean and dry and haven’t contained bleach/strong chemicals), and fill up with anything from porridge to pulses, lentils to washing up liquid! You can take along your own container or one can be provided. You then buy just the amount you need, helping to eliminate unnecessary food waste. The weighing system is simple and fun to use. The Re:Store also stocks fresh local veg, milk and juice in glass bottles, refillable rapeseed oil and eggs; there are Christmas spices and dried fruit too. As a newly opened business the range will be expanding as customers say what they would like to see stocked - please pop in to say hello and find out more. While I was there, Charlotte Kirkbride and her son Charlie came in from Aberlour. Charlotte and Lifestyle MAG
Charlie had come prepared with all their own jars and Charlie didn’t take long to master the system. Charlotte was delighted to now have this store in Moray and is happy to travel down from Aberlour to stock up. I made a few purchases myself and I have to say the cucumber, minus any plastic shrink wrapping, was absolutely delicious. It is goes without saying Charlotte and Charlie will be back, so will I. If you haven’t been yet I would thoroughly recommend you make the effort.

CHARLIE AND LYNNE Fractal: noun A curve or geometrical figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. They are useful in modelling structures (such as snowflakes) in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth and galaxy formation.

W
e all know that electricity and water do not mix. However, there is one instance when they are needed to work together in order to produce an astonishing result. Charlie and Lynne Coutts have a most unusual hobby, one that has progressed from an initial interest into a small cottage industry. They are recyclers – but recyclers with a twist. They take old pallet wood that has been discarded and is past its sell-by date, as it were. And then they transform ordinary planks of this wood into individual items of furniture and decorative pieces. The process they use is called fractal wood burning (also called Lichtenburg figures) and it is very simple to do but, because of the electricity aspect, can be very dangerous if you are not careful – this is where health and safety has to be paramount. Once the wood has been selected, it is coated with a solution of water and bicarbonate of soda, applied using an ordinary paintbrush. Power comes from an old transformer (out of a defunct microwave oven) which is attached to two jump leads with a six inch probe clamped in each lead.

Once power is applied, the wood is burned from one probe to the other, creating the most amazing and intricate patterns. It is almost as if the wood has had an electric shock. The intensity of the burning can be controlled by moving the probes or switching off the power when the desired result has been achieved. Watching this process is fascinating; the speed with which the electricity sears the patterns in the wood is mesmerising but at no point must anyone ever lose sight of the fact that it is dangerous and every care must be taken. Charlie and Lynne are fortunate in that they have an enormous shed on their property, allowing them more than ample space to store their wood supplies, position the tables for searing the wood and then for building their furniture. Each stage of the operation has its own dedicated space so there is no danger of one stage of the work bleeding into the next. Often they will find that certain wood does not burn as well as others and the end result does not please – when this happens the wood is used in their household woodburning stoves. All the shavings are used as kindling so absolutely nothing goes to waste.
Every piece of wood is brushed to remove excess charring and then treated and left to dry. Once they have their finished pieces of wood, they can be made into the most sturdy garden tables and benches, children’s toy boxes, picture frames, candle holders, wall panels – whatever your imagination can fire up. Once fully assembled the finished pieces are stained or varnished to suit and then are ready to be used for many years. Charlie and Lynne started to introduce their work at farmers’ markets and have steadily built up a reputation for producing well made items that will last for years. Their popularity has grown to such an extent that they have been given commissions from their customers for anything from a child’s toy box to a full-blown picnic table and benches. As each item is made to order the waiting time could be a few months but with such unusual end products, the wait is well worth it.

Highland Maid Hats KNITTER
W
ith their brooding mountains and misty glens, the Highlands of Scotland are simply magical. It is a place where legends and myths abound and where time seems to stand still. Morven Gabriel was born in the Highlands in the sixties and was fortunate to be surrounded not only by this breathtaking scenery but also by a family of beautiful knitters. Her grannies and mother were all patient teachers and passing on their knitting and crocheting skills was as natural to them as feeding her. As Morven grew older she found that she was always changing and tweaking the patterns, adding her own slant and individuality, eventually just making up the patterns as she went along. Her first knitting venture, Highland Maid hats, was born out of this, supplying two Highland craft shops with her finished hats. However, with working full time as well as knitting, frustration set

in as she did not have the time she would have liked in order to design new hats. She therefore gave up knitting for others and concentrated on doing her own thing. Morven occasionally knits for others but prefers to experiment with her own designs and writing patterns for others to knit. Morven is also a keen amateur landscape photographer, gleaning inspiration from the beautiful landscape with its seasonal changing colours and moods – this inspiration seeps into her knitting patterns and makes each one unique. Through her website and her Facebook page, Morven was contacted by an independent yarn dyeing company in Florida, Olive and Two Ewes. The company are organising a tour for a group of 40 fibre artists from Florida to Scotland next May and have invited her to be their Scottish host designer. Before they come across, she will be designing three items of knitwear for them to knit in their monthly ‘Yarny Ewes Knit-A-Longs.’ These will have a Scottish theme, but will also commemorate their visit. Morven will be travelling to Oban in May to meet with the group and stay with them at their hotel. What a wonderful experience for a highly talented and modest lady.

Buckie Christmas Kracker S
aturday, 23rd November, promises to be an exciting day for all. This is the 9th year in a row and Buckie’s Christmas Kracker hopes to attract an even bigger crowd than before. More than 3000 people are expected to throng the streets and to get involved in this wonderful annual event, which sees many local shops promoting special offers.
The main street is pedestrianised and becomes a hive of activity from 10am onwards. A quick check on their Facebook page will confirm this start time. Planned events will include Santa’s Grotto (which will open early) and the Santa Fun Run. This was such a success last year that it is being repeated this year and is open to all enthusiastic runners of any age. There will be local talent on the stage; breakfast with Mickey and Minnie at Time Restaurant (booking essential); a large craft marquee with over 35 stalls - this promises to be well worth visiting; outdoor stalls; the fair; bouncy castles; face painting and lots of street fun for the young and the young at heart. 30

At 1.30pm there will be the legendary parade. This includes all the characters, Santa in his sleigh, celebrities, who have been named this year as Emmerdale’s Nicola King and Eric Pollard, Husky dogs, the local pipe band and the floats, in which local school children are encouraged to participate. This year there is the first ever Family Dog Show, with numerous categories to enter. After the parade there will be a Meet & Greet opportunity with the celebrities and the characters. The public pay a donation to meet and have a photo taken with the guest of their choice. In the afternoon there will be a 4 piece ABBA tribute band on stage and they will also be playing at the Kracker after party, to be held at the Fishermans Hall (tickets available). The day comes to an end with the Kracker stage party, held on and around the stage with the characters and the celebrities, who will switch on the Town Christmas Lights. Local singer Toni then continues the party, with the spectacular fireworks display scheduled for 4.30 (weather permitting). The day promises to hold something for everyone and will get you in the mood for the Christmas festivities. Fingers crossed for good weather!

A
berlour’s small Rotary club wanted to try something new! The idea was to create a Christmas market, similar to those found in Germany and Scandinavia. Local talent would be able to showcase their wares, giving the community a marvellous opportunity to buy unique, hand made gifts for family and friends at Christmas. The idea was successful and the event was well attended, so much so that this year’s market will be held on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December…. With the nights drawing in and the autumn weather approaching, the event is sure to become quite magical and atmospheric. Aberlour is fortunate to have a lovely village square adjacent to the parish church, a perfect setting for a themed market, delighting the young and not so young alike. Marquees will be erected in the square and tables will be set out, inside the church and, on the day, all will be decorated with festive greenery, fairy lights and Christmas decorations. Stalls will include, but are not limited to, glass works, leather and woodworks, watercolour artists, basketry, delicious cakes and sweets, handmade home decor, toys, textiles, beauty products, candles, a butcher, jewellery and a fish merchant. Literally something for everyone! The Rotary Club will be serving roast ham and bratwurst in buns, roasted chestnuts and gingerbread - all adding to the Christmas flavour. The outside vendors will provide mulled wine
and prosecco, hot drinks, charcuterie, fresh donuts, icecream and more. There will be a classic Santa’s grotto and, on occasion, a children’s storytelling time in a warm, fairy lit teepee. The Club has also been lucky to secure musicians who will play and local businesses will join in by opening late. In addition there will be a special raffle - tickets available from October. In past years the feedback has been very positive and the Club are pleased to have created a family friendly, feel good seasonal event for the local community. Who needs to fly to Germany? Just come to Aberlour. As in the past, the proceeds from this year’s market will be split amongst different local charities.

The Salt Cellar, Fiona Forrest Catering, Huntly Lossiemouth Panseared Loin of lamb with roasted veg Ingredients 200Gm Lamb Fillet 150Gm Creamy Mash Nutmeg Scented 25Ml Red Wine 100Gm Rootvegetables 10Gm Butter Unsalted Rosemary Pan sear lamb fillet Till Caramelized On Outside and Remove From Pan Fry Finely Chopped Root Vegetables With Rosemary Butter Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Until Softened, Rested Lamb Slice and place on Creamy Mash, Scatter Roasted Vegetables Round Reduce Red Wine In Pan with butter and rosemary removing all the natural juices from Lamb and toasted vegetables add a knob of butter and drizzle round.

Ingredients 2Oz/50G Vegetable Margarine 4Oz/100G Mushrooms, Chopped (Optional) 6Oz/175G Finely Grated Carrot 1 Finely Chopped Onion 5Oz/150G Rolled Oats 5Oz/150G Vegetarian Cheese Grated 1 free range egg, beaten 1 tbsp soya sauce 1 tsp basil 1 clove garlic, crushed (optional) 1 tbsp tomato sauce or purée salt and black pepper to taste Preheat oven to 170°C / 325°F / gas mark 3. Melt the margarine in a pan. Gently cook the onion and mushrooms for 5 minutes. Transfer them to a mixing bowl and add all the other ingredients. 3. Season to taste with salt and pepper and mix well. Press mixture into a greased, shallow baking tin and bake for 25-30 minutes.
Hot & Sweet Mayo Dip Ingredients 2 Tspn Oil 1 Onion - Chopped 1T Sp Coriander Seeds Crushed 2 Tbsp Tikka Masala Paste 6 Tbsp Mayonnaise 6 Tbspfromagefrais 3 Tbsp Mango Chutney

Heat oil and fry onion and coriander seeds until onions are soft . Add tikka paste and cook for 1 minute stirring. Remove from heat , cool for ten mins and add the remaining ingredients. Spoon into a serving bowl garnish with parsley.
Time Restaurant, Buckie Mulled Wine Poached Pears with a Creamy Stilton Sauce Ingredients 4 Pears 4 Glasses of Red Wine Half Orange Half Lemon Cinnamon Sticks 250ml Double Cream 200g Blue Stilton Salad to serve Put wine in pan with cinnamon sticks and sliced lemon and sliced orange. Peel pears and add to the pan whole. Allow to simmer for 25 minutes but do not allow to boil. In meantime make the blue cheese sauce - Place 250ml cream in a pan, allow to simmer and add the Blue stilton and season to taste. Stir until the cheeses has melted. Remove pears from pan, half and fan the pears, Serve with the blue Stilton sauce and salad. Seive contents of wine pan into a glass then you have a mulled wine to enjoy with your starter!
Highlander, Craigellachie Spiced Honey Cookies Ingredients 400G Plain Flour 150G Unsalted Butter 1 Beaten Egg 2 Tbsp Mixed Spice 100G Golden Caster Sugar 2 Tbsp Honey 0.5 Tbsp Cream Of Tartar 100G Melted Dark Chocolate Method Gently rub butter into flour in a large bowl until you have crumbs. Stir in the egg, mixed spice, caster sugar, honey and cream of tartar. Stir until you have a soft dough then wrap in clingfilm and refrigerate for 20-30 mins. Heat your oven to 180c or 160c for fan oven. Roll out your dough and cut into festive shapes, bake for 10-12 mins on a lined baking tray Chef’s Suggestion: Dip your cookies in melted chocolate and festive sprinkles.

Ingredients 500g salmon 250g cranberries 60ml beetroot juice 10g dill 50ml gin 1 lemon juiced and zest 4 juniper berries 100g sea salt 20g horseradish 60g brown sugar Pinch pepper.
Serves 4 as a starter

Method 1. Mix all ingredients in a food processor till you have a paste. 2 take a heavy dish and spread 1/2 the paste on bottom, place salmon on top and cover all with the remaining paste. 3 cover very tightly with clingfilm and place a heavy dish on top to press down the salmon. 4. Method Melt the butter and add to the crushed digestive biscuits Mix and line the base of a large cake tin and place in fridge to harden juice the oranges and soak the gelatine sheets in the juice. Gently warm the cranberry jelly in a pan with 30 gramsof sugar, then add to the gelatine mix until dissolved. Take pan off the heat and fold in the segments of the clementine’s allow to cool. Whip the double cream until soft peaks Then add 100grams of the castor sugar, the cream cheese, the melted white chocolate zest of oranges and all spice to the whipped cream and fold till comes together and set aside. Construct your cheesecake by layering cheesecake mix-jelly mix-cheesecake set in fridge for 2 hours before serving Serves 12

or Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail was the first ever nationwide public art trail on the streets of Scotland’s cities.
The trail ran for 11 weeks from 17th June 2019 - 30th August 2019, culminating in a series of Farewell Events and nationwide auctions in each of the five host cities, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. Scotland’s first ever national public art trail which included over 200 Oor Wullie sculptures was aimed to unite the country, raise awareness and vital funds for Scotland’s children’s hospital charities. Oor Highland Coo was on Douglas Row Inverness with a grand view of the river Ness over the summer. Having been purchased at the Inverurie auction, he now has an equally grand view o the sea fae ootside his new home, the Seafield Arms Hotel in Cullen. Over 1.2 million pounds has been raised for local Scottish children charities from the auctions. This includes the Archie Foundation which is a charity that makes the difference for sick children when they are in hospital or need long-term medical treatment across the North and NorthEast of Scotland. They are the official charity of Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, the Highland Children’s Unit in Inverness and Tayside Children’s Hospital in Dundee. Lifestyle MAG

The inspiration for Oor Highland Coo came from Scotland’s iconic creature that is very much part of our history. Oor Highland Coo has many shades of ginger, blonde and broon and his bucket represents the grass and thistles found in his natural grazing.

DANCE! Let’s celebrate and feel good… The autumn months mark the natural time to come together and breathe fun, warmth and light into those longer, darker evenings. It’s party season! When the booze and snacks are flowing, it’s easy to find yourself feeling less than healthy in the run-up to Christmas. So here are a few tips for celebrating without paying a heavy toll in your fitness and energy levels…
A dance then a drink Why must we imbibe a bucket of ‘Dutch courage’ before we’ll get up and dance? Someone will always have to be the first on the dancefloor, so why not you? The best way to portray confidence is to get up and dance. It doesn’t matter how good or bad you think you are at it – you’ll always be a better dancer than the person who props up the bar instead of having a go. Pull up a friend, partner or colleague with you; you can still chat and have a laugh just like if you were sitting down, only you’ll be getting the benefits of moving your body at the same time. Dancing is one of the most ancient forms of expression and helps to bond us socially. I promise you’ll have a giggle! If a track comes on that you’re not feeling as much, give it a little longer. If it’s really not moving 60
you, use it as a chance to take a quick break and rehydrate. When the next tune comes on, take the opportunity to invite another friend up to join you.
Treat yourself Try to see those delicious morsels of party food and cocktails as what they are – treats – and ones that you’ll earn throughout the night. Once you’ve had a good old dance session, treat yourself to a drink you really enjoy. Remember to alternate alcoholic drinks with glasses of water – you’ll not only avoid a hangover that scuppers your day after, but will half the amount of empty calories you’re drinking up. Have a snack when you’re hungry – ideally not before! And bear in mind that the usual party
snacks that rely on rich pastry or fried foods like crisps, will be hard to dance off. (A large sharing bag of crisps can have over 700 calories) Nuts provide a much better source of energy and minerals to replenish your natural salts after sweating away on the dancefloor.
Watch out for the moon! Ever been out on the town during the full moon? Everyone seems to be giving it extra welly! As it waxes towards full, the moon externally raises our energy levels to an abnormal high. It’s where we get the term ‘loony’ (not the opposite of a wee quinie!) from. In the day or two before the full moon, your appetite may swell, causing you to eat and drink more than usual. Being aware of this may help you moderate yourself and still enjoy the extra energy without succumbing to total abandon in your partying! The moon will be approaching its full around 12/13 Oct, 11/12 Nov, and 10/11 Dec.

Most importantly, have some fun and be prepared to laugh and smile your way through the night…
Think about the balance There’s much, much more to the balance of your health and fitness than counting calories, but it can provide a basic way of understanding how your energy input and output relate to each other. Daily recommended calorific intake is 2000 for a woman; 2500 for a man. For most of us, drinks will be in addition to that! A G&T is around 120 calories; a pint of beer is 200. Dancing can be a great way to address that balance, as a smallish person will burn between 200-300 calories in an hour of social dancing. If you’re on the taller or heavier side, you’ll burn more.
Throw some shapes! The more energy you put into your dancing, the better it’ll be for your body. Step up the pace to make it more of an aerobic workout for your heart and lungs. And use the full range of your arms, shoulders, middle, bum and legs to stretch Lifestyle MAG

ne of the greatest things about being an accompanist is getting to share musical experiences with an array of talented and gifted musicians. It influences and inspires you and gives you different goals to work on every day. Now it’s time to pull some of these incredible musicians all together, on one album... Born and brought up in the small, coastal village of Findochty in the North East of Scotland, my musical journey began when receiving fiddle and piano lessons at primary school. During my teenage years, I received tuition from Donald Barr and then James Alexander, both of whom were incredibly inspirational, supportive, and encouraging. I will be forever grateful to the opportunities that Donald and James both gave to me as a youngster. Fast forward a couple of years, and the reason I play guitar today is down to one man. Innes Watson. A never ending source of creativity, imagination and expressiveness, Innes’ genius inspired me at a gig he once did with Ross Ainslie in the Piping Centre, and from then on my journey as a guitarist and accompanist began... Being an accompanist is amazing, it truly is. I feel so lucky to be able to play with such a diverse range of incredibly talented musicians,

and seeing how this can influence and shape you as a player. This is where the idea for this project came from. I wondered what it would be like, and how it would sound to bring some of these skilled professionals together, all with their own ideas and creative outlooks, but to have myself at the core, as the continual musical thread that would link everybody together. In some ways it would almost be like a compilation album, bringing together some of my favourite people I’ve worked with over the years and having it all in one place, but in other ways, it may well spark something entirely new and creative. It would also be an album ran by someone who is accompanist, whose project it is, but they are never really at the forefront, just in the background holding everything in place and making everything stick together, just as an accompanist should do. That in itself is something that appeals to me and is quite unique and I’m not really sure it has been done before... I’ve started putting the wheels in motion to get this project moving, talking to musicians, looking at studio engineers, thinking about artwork etc. so it’s all building momentum and traction which is good. There’s no official release date as of yet as I’m still ironing out fine details, only thing I can probably say is early next year. 63

Paint The Town
P
aint the Town is the latest art exhibition by Donna Irvine which was launched on the 13th September at The Bank Restaurant in Huntly. Donna’s artworks were inspired by drone footage of Huntly and the surrounding area, using collage, text, inks, acrylic paint and glaze mediums. Donna has also incorporated the local newspaper and Doric poetry by the late Margaret Grant to produce very unique pieces of work with a flavour of the town and celebrating its history and beauty. Having visited The Bank restaurant with her husband Donna saw what a great space it was for displaying artwork. The next day she set about her project using 5 large canvases she had gathering dust. Fiona JD Pearson, Managing Director of The Bank Café & Restaurant commented; “We are delighted to host Donna’s latest exhibition and hope as many people as possible have the opportunity to view this very talented local artist’s fantastic works.”

Miu Art Studio Miu Shu or Mandy as she is known to friends is the artist to be credited for this Lifestyle cover After finishing High School in Bejing, Miu travelled extensively and studied art and languages amongst other disciplines. Having gained many work experiences across the world, Miu came to Scotland in 2014. Miu opened opened Miu art studio in 2017. Her project Dreamer 52, limited edition silk scarve painting, started its journey in Rhynie in 2108 and they are beautiful, like our cover.

Grampian Child Bereavement Network

The charity was formed in 2000 to help fund the building of Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and went on to also support the creation of the Highland Children’s Unit in Inverness, and the development of a children’s theatre suite at Tayside Children’s Hospital in Dundee.

he ARCHIE Foundation is a children’s charity with a family of funds - all different but with the same aim – to make the difference to children’s healthcare.
As the official charity of each of these three places, ARCHIE aims to make the experience of being in hospital as positive as it can be for local children. The NHS provides the most wonderful care, and ARCHIE provides the extras to make the difference.

The most recent addition is Grampian Child Bereavement Network, which aims to assist children and young people to access ageappropriate bereavement support across the region. GCBN raises awareness of the impact of bereavement on young people and provides them with opportunities to come together
GCBN offer the following services, which are all free to families within the Grampian region
An answer phone is available when not manned. We aim to listen and help identify what might be the most effective assistance for each individual GCBB accept referrals directly from families and professionals via our email or via phone calls. Book Gifting Service Provide age related books which can help children and young people understand death. Books are offered on a whole range of different issues from loss by suicide to cancer. Group Support The aim of these groups is to bring children and young people together to feel less isolated.
Some of the group activities are aimed at keeping memories safe, and others are about building confidence. Responder Visiting Service Trained volunteer responders, arrange a home visit to assist bereaved families by providing support. Visits normally take place within the family home, and can in some circumstances take place very quickly after the death has occurred. The responder will offer support to the family, after traumatic death circumstances when often all members are in shock after learning about the death, and be confused about the process. Training Services Free awareness training is offered to schools and other groups throughout Grampian Region, aiming to build skills, knowledge and confidence to those who may be already working and supporting children and young people. Specific issues such as supporting families following a range of circumstances are also provided. •

Critical Incident Support GCBN can offer direct support to situations where there has been a critical incident or traumatic high profile death or deaths. Members of our board have substantial experience of responding to major incidents and supporting families following high profile traumatic deaths.
Children and Young people do not have to talk about their loss, unless they wish to. Parents or Carers accompany their child and arrangements are in place for adults to meet others and enjoy a chat over a cuppa. Having the adults remain provides the child with a sense of reassurance especially if they are struggling with anxiety. Activity Days offer a range of fun activities. David Wood, Chief Executive of The ARCHIE Foundation, said: ‘By working together as one charity, all of our funds can be more efficient and better co-ordinated. We share resources and office spaces, knowledge, experience and expertise. ‘Money donated to our funds will always be spent on that fund and so our supporters know that they are making the difference to the cause they care about. Threshold – Le Patin Libre A co-production with Eden Court. Coming to Elgin for the first time is the very exciting Le Patin Libre. These highly trained skaters bring a revolutionary display of contemporary dance, on ice. The Montreal-based company last wowed audiences in Inverness in 2015 with their awardwinning Vertical Influences. Effortlessly engaging, their exhilarating movement characterised by pure invention, the quintet of Le Patin Libre defy every convention of figure skating to create a new dance form – on ice. In Threshold the charismatic ensemble experiments with the choreographic possibilities of ‘the glide’ – a state that allows the body to travel at speed through space, without moving. Playing with contrast and change, they zoom towards viewers seated on the ice, combining athletic virtuosity with joyous physicality. If you are inspired by the show you can hire skates and join the dancers on the ice for the after-show party following the 7pm performances (for an additional £5).
The audience watches the show from two identical sections at either end of the rink and therefore have the same view of this amazing performance.
