NEW FESTIVAL
Whisky Colours festival
T
he first Whisky Colours Festival will be held from 10 to 14 October 2019. It is a celebration of all things whisky and is centred in Dufftown, the malt whisky capital of the world. The team behind the festival have been inspired by the vast range of whisky colours that are mirrored in the beauty of the phenomenal autumn scenery in and around Dufftown with the woodlands displaying their stunning colours: reds, ambers, deep browns and russets as the trees lose their summer colours and take on the vibrant shades of autumn, together with the ripening barley – one of the main ingredients of the whisky – as it turns a glorious hue in that very special light of the setting sun. The festival will allow you to get up close and personal with some of the biggest names in the whisky industry to provide a truly intimate whisky experience. Their aim is to bring you extra special whisky experiences with an autumnal theme that will be truly something to remember. The festival is partnering with Tannochbrae Restaurant,
10
Cragganmore, Glen Moray and Glenfarclas Distilleries for dining and tasting experiences. It is teaming up with Morrison & MacKay and the Highlander Inn, to bring a unique autumnal tasting and lunch. All that is best in Masterclasses will be provided by the likes of Adelphi, Berry Bros & Rudd, Kilchoman Distillery and Speyside Distillery. A special tour to Aberlour Distillery with a walk to Linn Falls is something not to be missed. Each day will include intimate whisky experiences, from dinners with revered and highly respected distillers, sought after masterclasses, food pairing – whisky and chocolate and whisky and cheese have to be sampled to be believed – fun events and so much more. The festival will culminate in a closing event hosted by key partner, Tannochbrae Cuisine, bringing together all the elements of this 5 day event – whisky, music and food with lots of fun.

One of the lead festival organisers, Mike Lord, who is a Keeper of the Quaich and proprietor of The Whisky Shop Dufftown commented, “We want our guests to experience a series of in-depth events, giving exclusive opportunities which truly bring you the very best of whisky from the malt whisky capital. We are excited to be creating this extensive calendar of events, in a friendly atmosphere at one of the most colourful times of year in Speyside. These events have been created to appeal to everyone’s budget.” “One of the highlights of the masterclass programme is an Old & Rare tasting with Jonny McMillan in which you will be able to sample a selection of whiskies bottled in the 1960s, 70s and 80s and compare them to their modern counterparts.” “Whilst we have guests coming from across the world, we also want to make sure those who live locally can enjoy our events too. We will have driver packs available at most of our events so drivers can take their whiskies home and sample them safely, at their leisure. Drivers can come to many of our events in Dufftown for free if they don’t want to sample the whiskies on offer”. George Grant, 6th generation of the family behind Glenfarclas Distillery said, “The Whisky Colours Festival is a brilliant addition to the whisky calendar. We are working with The Whisky Shop Dufftown on an authentic experience 12

CLASSIC CAR SHOW
C
alling all classic car enthusiasts! Put a circle around Sunday 25th August on your calendars as the Buckie Classic Car Show is returning to the Linzee Gordon Park. The show will be opened at 11am by Moray Council CEO, Roddy Burns and promises to be a great day out for all the family. The show has grown in popularity year by year, with people coming from as far north as Shetland and as far south as Manchester to spend the weekend in Moray. Entries for the show had to close when the numbers exceeded 400; this number includes classic,

modern classic and future classic models – there is also a handful of tractors and some cracking vintage motorcycles. 2019 is a rather special year as there are a number of anniversaries that are being celebrated: the much-loved and iconic Mini is 60 (and showing no signs of slowing down!); the Ford Capri is 50; the ultra-rare but ohso-gorgeous Mercedes SL and the Rover 200 Series are both notching up 30 years – and, for the younger generation who have grown up with

a totally different type of car, the Ford Focus RS is celebrating its 10th birthday. There is a large number of these cars as entries and there are special events that have been arranged to mark all these anniversaries. It is fair to say that this event will probably be the biggest gathering of these rare vehicles in Moray, perhaps even in Scotland and it will be a marvellous opportunity to see all of them gathered together in one place. Stop and admire and chat with their owners who will be only too pleased to talk about their prized possessions with you. In addition to the cars there are 20 different craft stands. Because of the demand for stands from crafters the show’s organisers had to hire a large marquee in order to accommodate HOWDENS BUCKIE everyone. There are also 10 trader stands and various charity and community group stalls, bouncy castles for the children and enough food outlets to satisfy all tastes. One attendee that is sure to be the centre of attention is a super-rare Mini that has been turned into a mobile coffee vendor. As mentioned, the show opens at 11am and will close at 4pm and is completely free to the public. The organisers have gone to great lengths to make this a show for all the family to enjoy, irrespective of whether you are a child or a child at heart. Come along and enjoy looking at these wonderful cars, perhaps reminisce about days Lifestyle MAG

DAVEMARTIN
MUSIC
A
world without music is impossible to imagine. Since time immemorial man has communicated with sound and words. Music can soothe, it can excite and it can also incite. The hauntingly beautiful plainsong of the monks, the atonal singing of the Sami people, unaccompanied hymns sung in Gaelic, the sound of the pipes travelling through clear air from some distant hill and the soaring sound of African peoples harmonising a capella – they all touch something deep within us, something we cannot really explain.
20
It is the same with drumming; who knows why we react so strongly to the insistent beat of drums, whether they be the drums that we, as European people, instantly recognise or whether they are Indian, African or South American drums which produce a sound that cannot be described, but which seem to reach down deep into some primal place.
Dave Martin understands music and the effect that music can have on each and every one of us. A musician living in Forres, Dave has been involved in so many aspects of music. Along with his family, it is his life. His level of involvement is staggering and includes playing in bands, working with other musicians with their live and studio projects, working with dancers, theatre companies, film companies, local authorities and various projects that have taken him all over the UK as well as abroad. Each and every project will have introduced him to hugely talented people and he has been taken out of his comfort zone more than once. But, as he says, this is the only way to grow, both as a person and as a musician. Who can forget that memorable scene in the film The Shawshank Redemption when, locking himself in the warden’s office, the main character plays music from The Marriage of Figaro over the loudspeakers and into the prison yard. Every man in that yard stops in his tracks, mesmerised by the music. Dave has experienced this reaction for himself, as he has worked in a prison project and can attest to the effect that music can have. Music can also bring shy, autistic and traumatised people out of themselves. Whether it is by expressing their feelings in drumming or by joining in song with a choir and creating a bond with other people, music is a great healer. No-one is more aware of this than Dave and he endeavours to do everything in his power to bring music to those who need it most. He works tirelessly and it is no wonder that he was nominated by FeisRois for music tutor of the year in 2017. Dave has recently released an electronic solo album called ‘It’s Just the Way It Is’ and this is Lifestyle MAG
available on iTunes under the banner of Big Fat Electric. He will also be gigging with this album and with the Big Fat Electric Ceilidh, which mixes club culture with ceilidh culture. He also is currently involved in a project with friends, called Hed Swim. This is a Grunge/Alt Rock outfit and they have an album coming out called ‘Little Shiver’. It is this project that Dave and his friends are using to encourage people to open up and talk about mental health issues. As we know only too well, men tend to bottle things up and if this project can help but one person, then it will be a job well done. Dave cares – about his music and music in general but, perhaps most importantly, about the effect that music can have on people and how it can cross divides and can bring people together. Hed Swim will be at the Longmore Hall Keith on 14th September. Full line up on Facebook. Tickets available from eventbrite Email: bigfatelectricdave@gmail.com https://bigfatelectric.bandcamp.com/ album/its-just-the-way-it-is https://hedswim.bandcamp.com/ 21

Papiransky Read Me Write is the stunning selfpenned debut album from Scottish singer-songwriter Amy Papiransky set for release on Sunday, 1 September.
Originally from Keith in the North-East of Scotland, Amy has been gathering and writing songs over the last eight years. Read Me Write is the product of the Scottish songbird’s musical maturity and growing confidence. A music teacher by trade, Amy’s debut release is a lesson in flawless vocal dexterity and heartfelt song writing, the result of which is a contemporary, hypnotic and soaring sound with a side of sass, funk and class. Lifestyle MAG
Recorded in late 2018, produced by Angus Lyon and mastered by Chris Waite at Gran’s House Studio, the 11-track record features a stellar line-up of seasoned Scottish musicians including Charlie Stewart, Graham Rorie, Innes Watson, John Lowrie, Phil Cunningham, Rory Matheson and Ross Ainslie, who bring a charming combination of piano, electric guitar, fiddle, double bass, mandolin and percussion to the record. Amy said: “Recording and releasing this album has been a long-held dream of mine and I’m incredibly proud to be putting this personal collection of songs out into the world. Song writing was my first love and Read Me Write is the culmination of many years of putting pen to paper, performing and – with the help of many friends and musicians - slowly building my confidence.” Read Me Write is available to buy on Amazon, BandCamp and on CD on Sunday, 1st September. DOUGIE MACLEAN By Rhona Patterson
22nd June 2019 Dougie Maclean came to Fochabers for the very first time………..
T
his amazing travelling troubadour, of 45 years standing, who has graced stages across the world with audiences of thousands, has now packed out the arc sessions. “My first concert in the Fochabers Institute was certainly a memorable one with a great audience from all over the world and a lovely venue to perform in. Thanks to Mhairi and the team who organise the series of concerts” (Dougie MacLean) I was privileged to be in that audience and to enjoy a brilliant evening of music and wonderful stories. Dougie had the audience in the palm of his hand from the start and he had everyone participating. “Don’t wait for me to tell you to join in. If you hear anything that sounds like a chorus ……….help yourself” he said and we did. We did get reprimanded if we didn’t get it quite right. He didn’t seem to appreciate us rewriting his tunes and he made us do it again till we got it right. What a great evening of great songs each one with its own fantastic story ….. And of course we couldn’t leave without all joining in with Caledonia, my favourite. This is not the first time I have seen Dougie and it certainly won’t be the last ……….. What a talent, what an entertainer.

Strathspey FESTIVAL
N
ow in its fifth year, the 2019 Fiddler of Strathspey Festival (20 – 22 September) has grown impressively into this year’s national event. It is a celebration of the iconic music and dance of Strathspey: and where better than in Grantown the Capital of “Romantic Strathspey”. At its very heart are two prestigious fiddle competitions –with specially created trophies and over £700 of prize money. The 2019 festival will, in fact, cover over 2000 years of Highland culture. Taking audiences back to the earliest decades of the first millennium there will be performances on three distinct and rare reproductions of the Celtic war horn, the carnyx. At the other end of the timeline, talented students from local High Schools will perform their own rock concert. From the intervening years there will be traditional music: lots of it! There will be concerts, ceilidhs, informal open sessions, musical visits to historic sites, workshops, a fiddlers rally, and an outdoor church service with fiddle music, plus a range of other activities in Grantown’s beautiful Square. The festival’s main” player is Paul Anderson, recognised as one of Scotland’s best traditional fiddlers who will also lead his own “Hielan Symphony” played by the Cairngorm Orchestra. There is an invitation to everyone interested in our unique heritage and culture to come and join in; to compete, to party, to join sessions, dance or just to take part on the fringes – and those who don’t play to come and just enjoy this friendly and informal action packed weekend. he Lifestyle team are off to lunch on one of the sunniest and calmest days that we have seen so far this summer. Brilliant blue skies, not a breath of wind and temperatures that allow us to sport our best summer gear. And the venue? The Cullen Bay Hotel, jauntily decked out in blue and white and perched cheekily on high ground overlooking a magnificently deep blue sea. An uninterrupted view of sea and sky viewed through the hotel’s large conservatory windows. The best reason there is to take our time and savour both view and food. In lots of ways stepping into the hotel is almost akin to stepping back in time. There are no flamboyant expanses of modernity, just wellchosen furniture in calm surroundings that are redolent of an age where nothing was hurried and where personal service was paramount. The hotel
28
is comfortable in its skin, with the attentive staff looking after our every need. This is how things used to be done and it is utterly charming. Because we are drinking in the view it takes a little while to determine what we will choose from a very well balanced menu. Not too small and not too large – any large menu immediately makes the diner think “frozen solid” and “microwave”. But not here. Because Ian Watson owner/chef at the hotel has more than once been crowned Cullen Skink Champion, for both the traditional and the twist recipes, one of our starters has to be his signature dish. This time we choose the Cullen Skink with a twist.
The twist is sweet potato, chilli and a dash of rum. Eyebrows are raised, as this does not sound at all palatable and a million miles away from the traditional recipe – but we have to give it a go. We’ll all three share a bowl, please, and we’ll also share our other starters, which are haggis balls, slightly spiced with a beetroot garnish, homemade oatcakes and a whisky dip and then a creamy prawnmarie rose with iceberg lettuce and brown bread. All very good indeed, with the Cullen Skink in particular coming out thumbs up. 29
And now for the mains. One of us is having fish pie, which will take roughly 20 minutes to cook – no problem, as it gives us more time to admire the view of yachts out on the ocean – and the others will have the burger with cheese and a sandwich of smoked salmon and cream cheese on brown bloomer. Sandwiches are relatively simple to put together but it is the way they are presented which separates the men from the boys. Here we had a delicious crisp salad accompaniment with a subtle dressing – marvellous – and a very substantial filling. Could not fault it in any way. The fish pie was cooked in a cast iron skillet, perched on a wooden platter. Full to the brim with fish, potato and peas, creamy consistency of filling topped with perfectly
30
browned potato – a winner! The burger was a marvellous tower of meat patty, brioche bun, and onion rings with salad and chips on the side. Very substantial indeed, everything was perfectly cooked and presented with pride by staff who are obviously happy in what they do.
The attentive waitress suggested a dessert and would we like to eat outside in the garden area? Sounds like a good idea – so off we troop and sit in the sunshine, to await the dessert which we will all share. The pavlova with honeycomb and fresh strawberries was suggested by the waitress – we were very glad that she made that choice as it was incredibly good. Just the right consistency in the meringue, with crunchy honeycomb and fresh juicy strawberries. A perfect way to round off a really lovely meal. The Cullen Bay Hotel proudly lists all its local suppliers at the foot of the menu and they go to great lengths to ensure that everything is as fresh as possible – the fish being almost straight from the boat to the plate. With such an attitude to perfection and a complement of staff who really care, the hotel deserves multiple visits.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Torrish
S
ituated on the banks of the River Ness, the Ness Walk Hotel offers the very best of modern Scottish hospitality, both with its accommodation and its food. With a delightful mix of relaxed and friendly service, coupled with a cuisine that defies description in its excellence, it most certainly is the place to be.
38
The river contains many salmon pools and the hotel’s restaurant is named after the Torrish fly, an object of exquisite beauty and craftsmanship, used in salmon fishing. The restaurant is in the original drawing room and hence is redolent with traditional 19th Century details, a cosy fire and enviable views through the bay window to the River Ness beyond. The décor is subtle and does not overpower; instead it is calming and invites relaxation.
To dine at the Torrish restaurant is to immerse yourself in a soothing world of exemplary service. We are met at the main entrance by Gabriel, a maitre d’ who is a master in the art of making everyone welcome. We are escorted to the bar which adjoins the restaurant and offered cocktails. It is difficult to choose; as one is driving, the other will show solidarity and non alcoholic drinks are chosen. A ‘virgin’ mojito and a frozen mango daiquiri. The presentation is exquisite and the taste sublime. Such is the introduction to what will become a most memorable meal.
Our table is ready, the unfinished drinks are placed on a tray and we follow Gabriel to our table, beautifully laid with glasses, cutlery and floral arrangement on a pristine white tablecloth. Seats are pulled out for us, we are seated with expertise and snowy white napkins are shaken out, folded into triangles, and carefully placed on our laps. I cannot remember when I last experienced service of this order. The view through the bay window is captivating. We can just see the river slowly winding its way down to Inverness and beyond. People are strolling with dogs and children down the path, the sun has obligingly come out and is streaming through the trees by the river bank. What more could you possibly wish for? Now comes the difficult part – deciding what to choose from a menu that is comprehensive, offers the usual expected dishes, yet at the same time is excitingly different. All credit must go to head chef, Craig Douglas, who has trained both here in the UK and abroad and Lifestyle MAG
can name famous chefs as his mentors. Gabriel is on hand to make suggestions and to discuss various dishes with us – and after much deliberation it will be the scallops and the chicken terrine. We sit back to wait. Enjoy the view. Hear the animated buzz of other diners who have been seated. Warm aniseed infused bread and butter in a dill oil arrives. Most unusual and totally delicious. And then come the starters: oh my. The dishes have been presented on plates that complement the colours of the food and have been arranged with a painter’s eye. The hand dived west coast scallops with carrot puree, heritage carrot, orange gel, coconut foam and coriander cress simply melt in the mouth. The west coast langoustine and chicken terrine is a masterpiece of colours on a starkly contrasting black plate. Crisp chicken skin and yeast crumb tops a terrine that is utterly delicious and is made more so by the addition of two langoustines and an avocado and basil cress. Somehow both dishes contain the very colours of our clothing; either this is pure coincidence 39
or someone has gone to exceptional lengths to create a ‘wow’ experience. I’d like to think it is the latter. In between courses we are handed a warm ‘amuse bouche’ – creamed celeriac with a horseradish foam. Both crunchy and smooth, it is extremely palatable and paves the way for the main courses. Which, when they arrive, do not disappoint. Whereas beforehand the starters were on differing plates, the main course arrived on pristine white crockery but was just as artfully arranged as the starters. Roasted loin of Speyside venison with lapsangsouchong, Jerusalem artichoke puree, confit salsify, roast shallot, artichoke crisp and game jus – the venison is cooked to perfection, medium rare, but can be cooked to order depending on the diner’s preference – and roast north Atlantic monkfish with charred baby shallot, watercress puree, potato fondant, celeriac discs and red wine jus. Oh my goodness, this is perfection on a plate. During our meal, the attentive staff arrive at our table to ask if there is anything else we require. For them, nothing is too much trouble and they are happy to stay awhile and talk about where they come from (all the waiting staff wear name badges which indicate their home city) and you get the impression that if we were to request a jazz combo to entertain us while we eat, the request would be accommodated. A slight exaggeration but you get the general idea! Do we have room for dessert? Oh yes. That is not to say that the meal so far has not been satisfying (it has) but the two dishes so far have been of such exceptional quality that we just have to experience their desserts. We order strawberry cheesecake and the beautifully named textures 40
of lemon and meringue. My lemon dessert is scrumptious; really lemony with just that slight tart bite but my companion’s cheesecake does not quite hit the spot. Perhaps the chef has taken it upon himself to cater for the more diet conscious amongst us and has toned down the creaminess of a cheesecake and has created more of a delicious mousse. We have a word with Gabriel who welcomes constructive criticism, which is relayed to the chef, who responds. The comment has been taken on board. And it is this interaction between us, the guests, and the chef and his team that sets this dining experience apart from others. Our comment has been met with good grace.
Sadly, we have to leave. We are not staying overnight. But we will be back and we will relay this experience to friends and family. The Torrish restaurant is superb, stylish yet friendly and relaxed; wonderful surroundings, excellent food and attentive staff. Fine dining does not get much better.

t a truly amazing and inspiring event, headlining guests - including celebrity Gok Wan and Hilary Alexander OBE came together to give their time and support to encourage young people of the fashion future. It was a day that the Edinburgh students will not forget as they and their lecturers scooped this year’s prestigious Christopher Bailey Gold Award. The award - named after its first winner in 1991 - went to Brian McLysaght from Edinburgh College of Art for his spectacular wooden designs inspired by the role of clothing in 20th Century decolonisation movements.
create clothing that would replicate ancient times and would be worthy inclusions in any museum or artefact centre now and in the future. The garments, designed to be lightweight and flexible, are produced from fine laser-cut wood sourced in Finland and joined with elastic fibres. With the world becoming ever more determined to avoid pollution and material waste, the sustainability of this clothing is an important element of its appeal. Alongside this significant award, Brian also won the Hilary Alexander Trailblazer Award and the Conscious Design Award.
Irish born, Brian chose to study in Scotland and has always felt an affinity with Scotland. In embracing its culture and heritage he is proud to be a member of his Scottish team. His colleagues have been very supportive and have nurtured the passion behind his collection, which harks back to his own Irish heritage. His collection also shows his admiration for the artefacts, museums and Irish mythology that are clearly seen and prominent in all his pieces. His colour palette - blue to orange to deep browns - symbolize unspoilt nature and enabled Brian to 46

Her careful choice of greens, blues and purples brings to life the beautiful green lush Scottish landscape she grew up seeing as a child and her hand-crafted materials show great skill in patchwork and weaving - a truly Scottish heritage. She is definitely one to watch. Edinburgh College of Art students continued to impress with Alexandra Fan, a Chinese international student, receiving two awards (the Womenswear Award and the David Band Textiles Award). Alexandra highlighted how welcome she was made as a student at the Edinburgh College of Art, saying that her lecturers showed great interest in what she had learnt in China.
Rosie Baird It was also great to see home grown talent: Rosie Baird, whose designs championed Scottish heritage, took centre stage too, winning the George Catwalk to Store award. The panel included the senior buying director at George, MaryKate Campbell; the fashion director at Glamour, Alexandra Fullerton; and Influencer Megan Ellaby. Rosie wanted to bring to the floor the full wealth of Scotland’s creative environment from its music to blockbuster drama series such as Outlander. She is fascinated by the sheer diversity of the creative industry and wanted to pull it together in a story told by clothing - and Lifestyle MAG
You can see quite clearly from Alexandra’s outstanding portfolio of work that she already works to the high standard of what is currently seen on the runway in the main shows. O
n Sunday 15th September, the 2019 Fishwives Walk and Fun Run will take place, organised by The Rotary Club of Keith as one of their main charity fundraising events. The Fishwives Path was relaunched as a leisure route in 2013 after it fell out of traditional working use in the 1950s and is now a fully signed 11 mile heritage walk between the Buckie & District Fishing Heritage Centre and Newmill. It is a route that was established by fishwives carrying 40lb laden creels of fish to market in Keith and often returning with other goods such as churns of milk on what was fully a 26 mile journey on foot. Mary Milne was the last known fishwive to use the route. Mary started work as a creel woman at the age of 13 or 14 and finally retired at the age of 73 in the mid 1950s. The re-opened route not only recognises the fishing heritage of the
52
Following the re-establishment of the route it became an obvious focal point for the annual Fishwives Walk charity event, which attracts individuals, families and fun runners from all over Moray and beyond. The event raises thousands of pounds for many charities each year. The Fishwives Path itself is a mix of quiet country roads, farm tracks, forestry tracks and grassy paths. Stout shoes are recommended and check the weather forecast for appropriate clothing before setting off.
Locals have recalled the path being used as a route for horses heading to be shoed at the Drybridge Smithy and various historic documents point to significant sections of the route being used as a drove road. One area that the path passes through, at Kingscairn Croft, was used for a period from 1940 as a shooting range. Animal lovers are also attracted to the route where Roe Deer, Pine martens and many bird species can often be spotted. As well as raising money for charity, participants will be enjoying a beautiful part of the Banffshire countryside, heading out towards Aultmore and over Stonyslacks. The route then heads east to its highest point of Addie Hill, at 900 feet above

sea level, with fine views across Banffshire and the Moray Firth. The path then turns north and drops down through Drybridge and towards the finish at Buckie. Those taking part leave from Newmill at 10am, heading for Buckie, the entry fee is £10 and includes return transport where required and refreshments on arrival in Buckie. WELLBEING
This is the aim of the ‘Community Connector’ volunteer role run by Moray Wellbeing Hub. Hosts of the local social movement of mental health ‘Champions’, the idea came to them when they became aware of people struggling to come along to their support groups and wellbeing courses. “We’d get people book on for a course like Living Life to The Full but they then did not turn up,” explained a peer-trainer. “When we asked why often it was the fear of going it alone or taking a big step to coming in to a new group. They just need a wee confidence boost, having someone they recognise in the room they can say hi to.” Learning from successful existing volunteer projects that work one to one, such as Moray Council’s Health and Social Care Moray’s Buddy Scheme, they decided that the time was right to try something new and applied for funding from the local Moray LEADER team and from 56

ife has a habit of being up and down for all of us. For some there are some major dips – this might be due to grief, trauma, addiction or illness, even natural disaster – things that can happen to anyone of any age. When such experiences do happen, they often get hidden from a fear of shame or stigma. But what if these very experiences could be used to help someone else, perhaps give them hope and inspiration to make different choices or use more services and supports.

ALLIANCE Scotland, who focus on encouraging people to self-manage their long-term conditions like diabetes. Securing over £150k for the ‘Wellbeing Connected Moray’ project has meant the Community Connector idea is fully charged and ready to make a difference. Jean Pryde, the project’s Volunteer & Wellness College Coordinator, is delighted, “The idea is that we match people based on interests, where they live and their challenges. The Community Connector is someone who has been in those shoes, knows what it is like but is in a better place just now and has the support of training and supervision. We have teams in every locality ready to connect with folk with small acts of compassion. A one off sharing a cuppa or walking a dog together makes all the difference; it needn’t be a life commitment.” Asking just 2 hours a month from Community Connectors is the kind of approach Sue Davies, Volunteering Officer at tsiMORAY, wants to celebrate, “There’s been an emphasis in the last decade or so on the ‘professionalism’ of volunteering – which is not a bad thing in itself. However, the more informal acts of volunteering -the ones we see predominantly on the very local level – putting out a neighbour’s bin, cleaning up the local beach or play park – is what we need to encourage and grow more of.” “It’s only when we connect to the place where we live – that we can begin to form roots and give to our wider communities. Buckie Roots
actually is another wonderful example of this. It started with a few folk transforming the town square and war memorial by planting out bedding plants – it has now become a place for others to get involved, to pull some weeds, plant a petunia, and to importantly connect with others and the place. This informal volunteering – on the most local of levels -- is the bedrock of community that needs nurturing.” Formal or informal volunteering has transformative power for those who take part from both sides. If you would like a Community Connector to help boost your mood or want to offer support yourself with one of the 100+ volunteering opportunities available in Moray today, get in touch with Moray Wellbeing Hub, tsiMORAY or Moray Council volunteering. CHARITY
OUTFIT MORAY Photography by Mick Morley
F
ounded in 2003, Outfit Moray is a Lossiemouth-based, outdoor learning and adventure charity which supports vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in Moray by offering activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, abseiling, mountain biking, canoeing and coasteering. Well that’s the quick description at least, but what we do is far more than can be captured in a single paragraph, or even 500 words! As a charity, our vision is “to change lives by creating the opportunity for everyone to take part in outdoor learning & adventure irrespective of their ability, financial position or location”. We do this by providing subsidised, affordable and accessible activities to local charities, schools and youth groups, as well as delivering a varied programme of subsidised school holiday activities for all young people in Moray aged 8-18.
60
Using the local breathtaking environment as our classroom and playground; from locations such as Bridge of Brown near Tomintoul, Cummingston and Bow Fiddle Rock, we are able to actively develop the potential of these young people and help shape their future lives by building resilience and increasing their confidence and self-esteem. We do this by providing positive role models and encouraging the acquisition of life skills and new experiences through challenge and positive risk taking. Our highly qualified and experienced instructors are able to deliver a wealth of activities: abseiling, archery, body boarding, bushcraft, canoeing, coasteering, gorge walking, hill walking, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, surfing, standup paddleboarding, team games, tree climbing, Tyrolean and weaseling, all of which we do right here in Moray!
It costs around ÂŁ250k a year for us to deliver our full programme of funded and subsidised activities and, as with most charities, we rely on fundraising to bring in these funds, including donations from Trust and Grant making charities and community fundraising. We are working hard to become more selfsustainable, so we utilise the skill sets of our instructors and staff to raise funds, including running first aid courses and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, as well as providing first aid and event cover. We also have our own challenge event called Cairngorm to Coast; which is a100km hike and bike duathlon that takes place each May between the Cairngorm Ski Centre carpark to Windswept Brewing in Lossiemouth.
experience. All the income raised through Bike Revolution is reinvested into Outfit Moray. For more information on Bike Revolution and our work with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people across Moray, visit our website or join us on our social media sites on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
Of course, we are able to deliver all our outdoor adventure activities for adults too, which means we can do hen or stag dos, corporate days or team building activities. Plus, we put on the best birthday adventures!

Our social enterprise project, Bike Revolution, was set up in 2012 with the aim of getting more people out on bikes. They achieve this by refurbishing and selling donated bikes at affordable prices, providing servicing and repairs, as well offering bike hire and running bike maintenance classes for all ages and level of Lifestyle Lifestyle MAG MAG

SCHOOL
Moray School Bank W
e are lucky to live in such a beautiful area. Moray is renowned for its stunning scenery; a mix of brooding mountains and lush farmlands, endless sandy beaches and dramatic coastline. Sadly, what it is also renowned for is not known by many who live here – child poverty. A considerable percentage of the population cannot make ends meet, due in part to low wages and high rentals, leaving very little disposable income with which to pay for all the essential family needs. In a lot of cases it is the children who ultimately suffer. Help is at hand in the shape of Debi Weir, originally from West Lothian and now permanently resident in Moray. Debi had been involved in a School Bank in West Lothian and prompted by her daughter, Debi soon realised there was even more need for an organisation in Moray that would help take the pressure off of families by providing school uniforms and warm winter clothing to children living in financial hardship.
62
The Moray School Bank is run by trustees – adults who volunteer their time and their fundraising committee is a group of local children who come up with ideas for fundraising events. It really is children helping other children, such a simple idea but one that has been proven to enrich the lives of both those who give and those who receive. Debbie Kelly is the development coordinator and she is the one who delivers the uniforms to the families and also coordinates the many volunteers. Anyone can donate or sponsor: the school bank accepts donations of new school uniforms and warm winter clothing, ‘as new’ items, financial donations through their paypal page and also by fundraising through their various events. Drop-off bins are placed in supermarkets as well, making it easy for anyone to donate whatever they can. Moray School Bank has to seek funding constantly to assist them to meet the huge demand on their services. One of the latest awards was from the Berry Burn Community Fund. This funding of £15,000 will go towards the school uniform and
winter clothing provision for children who live in the Forres to Speyside catchment area. Sadly, the number of referrals is rising year by year. Moray School Bank has had referrals for over 600 children so far and the referrals this year are already nearly 200. So any help, be it small or large, from anyone will go towards making a difference for these children. But to ensure that the momentum is maintained, they are looking for little helpers. Any children that would like to become involved in raising money – by doing a sponsored walk, holding a cake sale or any cool or wacky idea (providing of course that it is safe) - would be welcomed. As a well-known supermarket chain is constantly reminding us – “every little helps”. And it really does. As well as the obvious results in collecting donations, getting involved gives the children a sense of purpose whilst also reminding them that there are some who are less fortunate than themselves. If you would like to help in any way please get in touch with Debi at info@morayschoolbank.org or Debbie at debbie. kelly@morayschoolbank.org or 0773284541. They would be delighted to hear from you.

FERGUS EWING MSP Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity
BREXIT IS STARTING TO BITE.
E
verywhere in rural Scotland, there is a sense of uncertainty, and now real evidence of an adverse impact in beef prices at market and slaughter. The millions being lost to businesses is not sustainable for our farmers and crofters. So I am pressing the UK Government to do what the Irish Government did - they successfully lobbied the EU for a £50 million fund to support their beef sector.
Of course, the EU is unlikely to compensate Scottish and UK beef farmers for losses being sustained due to Brexit – so the UK Government must stump up.
And we must also have the details of the proposed sheep compensation scheme – including the funding – in place by the end of August. Farmers can’t wait until the end of October to find out what help they can get from the ruinous effect of eyewatering tariffs on sheep meat and lamb exports to mainland Europe if we crash out of the EU with no deal. Businesses need to be able to plan. And with a recent NFUS survey finding that nearly 75% of farmers hadn’t done any planning for Brexit, I would encourage Moray farmers to plan as much as they can.
