EXHIBITION

“I have always been fascinated by pattern, detail, colours and textiles. The leaves that make a forest; the bark of Scottish pine; the feathers of a bird; the scales on a fish and on pine cones and artichokes; moths’ wings; bees’ stripes; the whorls of a shell. All these patterns are interpreted and woven in my work”. 2

T

he gallery in Aberlour is staging an exhibition of the works of Maggie Riegler, the internationally renowned artist who made Speyside her home and who sadly died in April last year, leaving behind a rich legacy of work. The exhibition will run until the end of May and besides the display of vibrant tapestries and detailed art works, will include talks by well-known faces who knew Maggie well and were proud to be her friends. Maggie was born in Darjeeling in August 1944. Originally from Aberdeenshire, her parents were tea planters and Maggie spent her formative years in India, immersed in the culture, sounds and colours of that sub-continent. At the age of seven she was sent back to Aberdeen to be cared for by a maiden aunt and to attend primary school in Maryculter. It was only when Maggie was attending secondary school that her parents returned from India. During these school years Maggie did so well that she was offered a place at Cambridge

University to study English and History. But Maggie being Maggie, a diminutive person but with an indomitable personality, she chose to study art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen.

Such was her talent that she was offered – and accepted – the post of lecturer in charge of the Weaving Department at Gray’s. Maggie specialised in weaving, tapestry and macramé. Prior to taking up the post, the college mounted an exhibition of her paintings; this was to prove a turning point in her life as the paintings were seen by Stewart Johnston (himself a student of pottery) and he fell in love with the paintings initially and then with the artist herself. They met and married and were together for 50 years.

After a spell at Dess, in Deeside, the couple and their young daughter, Lucy, moved to Craigellachie in Speyside, where they established the Green Hall Gallery and ran a highly successful business. The list of Maggie’s artistic achievements is immense and her work has found its way to all four corners of the world. We could not list everything here but, to name but a few, they include : tapestry commissions from the Royal Bank of Scotland and St Mary’s Cathedral in Aberdeen; art works for the World Wildlife Fund; the Durham Light Infantry Museum; the British Embassy in Cairo; commissions for Diageo, Drummuir Castle and Walkers Shortbread in Aberlour. The list goes on.. One lasting memory of Maggie must be her self-effacing attitude. Despite the lengthy list of achievements, both at home and abroad, Maggie kept her light firmly under a bushel and was not one to boast. Her output was prodigious. The fine details of her depictions of the Scottish landscape, its flora and fauna, are fastidious in the extreme and draw you in. In particular, her distillery cats are enchanting and quirky – but that pretty much sums up Maggie. She was quirky and at the same time could enchant you with her paintings. This is an exhibition not to be missed!

GRANT’S WHISKY OPEN NEW DISTILLERY RECEPTION CENTRE Toasting the success of Glenfiddich straight malt whisky and the new visitor’s reception centre at William Grant & Sons’ Glenfiddich Distillery, Dufftown. is a milestone year for the Glenfiddich Distillery. During the coming months many planned events will come together to celebrate it. There will be a commemorative limited edition bottling; the label, which has been cleverly designed, will feature the 50 years and will be on sale in the gift shop.

Prohibition, Glenfiddich was one of only 6 distilleries to continue production. In all the years that it has been producing single malt whisky, the Robbie Dhu spring has been the single source water for 100% of the production. Glenfiddich was the first distillery to introduce a visitor centre. Their list of achievements is testament to the forward thinking of its directors.

Glenfiddich certainly has come a long way. In 1963 it set out to tell the world about single malt. Up to this point no other distillery had done this. During the dark days of

If the past 50 years are anything to go by, Glenfiddich is set to continue on a journey of expansion and excellence.

Much has happened in the 50 years since the first visitor centre was opened. Prior to 1969, visitors to the distillery had been taken around on an ad hoc, on demand basis, usually hosted by an available member of staff, and no planned tour existed. However, it soon became apparent that the interest in the distillery from increasing numbers of visitors would have to result in a more formal, structured approach to touring the distillery. In 1969 the visitor centre was opened in a converted malt barn, which housed the gift shop, bars and an exhibition covering the history of Grant’s whisky. The exhibition had a display on the distillation process with samples of barley, malt, grist and peat on show, together with malt shovels, a collection of old distilling and cooperage tools and an old bottling machine. Also on display were whisky labels through the ages. Amongst the Grant family exhibits were the founder’s original handwritten plans for the distillery, various press cuttings and photographs, as well as a reproduction of an oil painting of the founder and the shield of the most famous of the Clan Grant Champions of the eighteenth century. Much has happened in the intervening years. As the distillery has grown, so have the needs of the visitor centre. Planned to accommodate a rate of visitors, which had been originally calculated at approximately 3,000 per annum, the visitor centre was becoming too small to be able to cope with increased demand. It had, therefore, to move.

Lifestyle MAG

It had also to reassess how best to present the tours to the public. Small numbers would mean the tours would be more intimate and participants would be able to glean much more from the information being imparted. It was essential that visitors would leave having had a memorable experience, one which they could tell their friends about. The distillery was also mindful of the fact that there was an increase in the numbers of people visiting from overseas. To this end, tour guides who were fluent in various languages were seasonally employed. It meant that everything would be explained in a visitor’s home language, which fact would enhance the visitor experience. Today the visitor centre is actually three separate buildings: the art gallery, the gift shop and the converted malt barn which houses the coffee shop and is adjacent to the reception area where the tours begin. From the moment a visitor arrives at Glenfiddich, experienced reception staff welcome you and guide you seamlessly through the tour programme.

A

NEW festival which will see ‘noodles’ of food and drink related events taking place over three days is set to take place in Nairn.

From a huge picnic in the park, gin and jazz, food related films, a beer and banter comedy night and an artisan market, visitors are being encouraged to visit a Taste of Nairn which will take place between April 12-14. The event has been timed to coincide with what many perceive to be the start of the tourist season for the town. 20

Lee Jack, owner of the Sun Dancer restaurant took the concept to Nairn BID and they are now working with local businesses to ensure Nairn is put on the food and drink map! Lee explained: “I really believe Nairn has a huge offering and is a fantastic destination for tourists. Initiatives such as the North Coast 500 and the North East 250 have really taken off, and there’s no reason why Nairn can’t create its own exciting tourist trap.

“From castles, the beaches, golf courses, parks, forests and walks, there is so much to see and do in Nairn, and the idea of Taste of Nairn is to make sure we shout about all of these wonderful attractions. It’s a celebration of Nairn and all we have to offer. Taste of Nairn is also the 2019 home to the World Tattie Scone Contest which was originally founded at Piping At Forres in 2013. The aim of the competition is to make a tattie scone using a set recipe with mashed potatoes and flour, plus the contestant’s own magic ingredient which they bring with them. The most tasty and imaginative scone will be chosen as the winner. It is sponsored and run by Oakwood Cookery School near Elgin.

Elaine Sutherland, owner of the school said she was delighted the competition will return for a seventh year. She said: “It’s great to be working with Taste of Nairn to ensure the World Tattie Scone Contest lives on for another year. It is synonymous with Piping at Forres, however, it is now an event in its own right, so where better to run it than at a food and drink-related festival.” To enter the World Tattie Scone Contest and to find out more about the Taste of Nairn visit: www.nairnconnects.com The Tattie Scone contest and Artisan Market will be held at Nairn’s Community & Arts Centre on Saturday 13th May between 10am and 3pm. Why not go along and join in the fun!

MUSIC

T

he 44th Keith Traditional Music and Song Association (TMSA) Festival has, as always, a fabulous line up for you on the 14th, 15th and16th June.

Sadly this year’s festival will be missing a fellow member and greatest advocate. Hilary Harvey, described as the hostess with mostess, passed away suddenly in December.

Returning to Keith by popular demand and headlining on Sat 15th this year is Rura, a multiaward winning act and one of Scotland’s most sought after folk based bands.

Hilary, who was full of fun, loved the music. Her home was always full of music and song with loads of laughter. I am sure that will continue this year in her memory; she would expect no less.

Many other events throughout the weekend include competitions, a dance in the Keith British Legion, Bothy Ballads in the Plough Inn, a family concert in the Keith Bowling Club and an open air concert in Keith Square on Sunday 16th. See the facebook page and website for a full list of events. Tickets are available from Mither Tongue, Mid Street, and Sandy McCombie Tel 01542 882638. 28

The newly formed band were not known as Strathisla Pipe Band at the time. There is an article dated 10th August 1918 describing how the pipe band from Keith performed at Auchlunkart House in Mulben. This would have been the first outing of the band prior to the end of hostilities during world war 1. It is rumoured that during an outing of the band in its early years, the playing members of the day used the collection to bolster the local publican‘s daily takings. This was never confirmed and might be the reason that pipe bands and a wee dram are considered synonymous.

The Band took the name Strathisla in 1919, after some of the founder members (including Jim Garden) were employed to cast peats for Strathisla Distillery. 30

The First Pipe Major was George McLaren, followed by: 1930-1938 - Bill Boyd 1938-1939 - Tom Smith Senior (who took a break for National Service) 1939-1945 - Sandy Ritchie (Home Guard) was Pipe Major whilst Tom Smith Sen was doing National Service 1945-73 - Tom Smith Senior 1973-2008 - Tom Smith Junior 2009-present - Keith Morrison Drum Majrs: Charlie Porteous, Bill Maclean, Davy Rennie, Davy Spark, John Inglis, Ian Cunningham, Mike Morgan – the present Drum Major.

During the 1970s and 1980s the band travelled abroad to play on four occasions. Also accompanying the band were a group of Highland Dancers, who included Alison Sievwright, Ann Rutherford, Donna Jamieson, Isobel Leith, Lesley Mackie and Kathleen Ogilvie. In 1977 they travelled to Crital, near Paris, staying in a Community Centre, staying there along with a US Basketball team! The young musicians of the band were amazed at the height of the players, and sharing accommodation with them was a real highlight of the trip. Charlie Scott, who did collections for the band for a total of 20 years, also travelled with them and stayed at the Community Centre. In 1979, a wine festival was visited in Zell, Germany, and in 1980 they travelled to St. Maur near Paris. In 1981 the band was invited to play at the Wine Festival in

Rudenhausen. Angus McLeod, the then minister at St. Rufus church and a friend of his, Father Werner, were instrumental in persuading the band to perform in Germany. A group of Germans who had been staying in Keith had seen the band playing and asked if they could travel to play. For all the foreign trips the band committee and members worked very hard to raise funds to allow the events to take place. As has been the case since the band’s inception, the local community in Keith were very generous. In 1989, 90 and 91 the band were also invited to play at the Braemar Gathering where they performed with other bands to the Royal parties present. The individual bands also had to perform at the overseas tent. These outings were done in conjunction with the usual local highland games circuit, which includes Dufftown, Aberlour, Abernethy, Nairn etc. There is of course the local Keith Show where the band has always played. Strathisla Pipe Band has also been asked to play at a variety of local events over the years, from playing for Santa on a snowy night, to visiting Turner Memorial Hospital, Glenisla and Weston House. We have been asked to lead off walkers on fundraising walks too. A common occurence was the band marching round the Keith streets. This does not happen so often now with the volume of traffic and safety to be considered. The band has been proud to lead the Armistice Parade every year, and have always had a good turn out of present and past members. In 2018, 4 quines from the band proudly played Battle’s O’er - at 6am at 4 different War Memorials in the local area. This was a worldwide event arranged by the National Piping Centre to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War. The band has prided itself on being able to attract new young members, and at present the majority of the band is under 18 years of age. Locals always mention how well turned out we are, and the support from the local community has been unstinting. 32

We feel that the folk of Keith and the surrounding area are proud to have a band of their own. During our Centenary year, we are hoping to have a Picnic in Fife Park on the May weekend, which will be open to all, as a way of thanking folk for their unstinting support throughout the years. We have also been asked by the Keith Country Show to put together a massed bands; we have been fortunate enough to have confirmations from 10 bands – Buckie, Dufftown, Aberlour, Huntly, Portsoy, Banff Castle, Nairn, Kintore, Inverurie and Inverness. This should be quite a spectacle and help the Show. We are finishing the year with a Dinner Dance in the Longmore Hall on the 21st of September. We are busy fundraising, and have been fortunate to have had a successful Tesco Bags for Life, and Quiz night. Our next fundraising event will be a Coffee Morning in the North Church Hall on the 13th April.

t is the time of year again when all the annual Highland Games and Agricultural Shows swing into action, providing tourists and locals alike with a myriad of entertainment throughout the North East. These events provide a great opportunity to showcase all that is best in farming, food production and rural crafts and industries in the area. The Scottish Highland Games Association is the governing body for over 60 Traditional Highland Games including all those that take place around the North East. Visit one or more to witness a great show of strength and skill in many disciplines. This long tradition and history originated from the Clans competing against each other in sporting events. All these events don’t just happen overnight, in fact as soon as one year is over the organisers are planning the next. Every event has a team of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure these events run smoothly each year. Their efforts help to ensure the continuation of a longstanding and important part of our rural heritage.

FUNDRAISING

I

have recently spent some time in the company of a remarkable young woman. In her early twenties, Lucy Lintott is a fresh-faced, attractive young woman with laughing eyes, a ready smile and a keen sense of humour. It is impossible not to be drawn to her warmth. She is also a tireless fundraiser and has immersed herself in many projects, from charity balls to children’s Easter egg hunts. There are times when she does this single-handedly and other times with the aid of a dedicated team of helpers, but at all times she does it with enthusiasm and dedication. Because of her work, Lucy has received countless awards, although she is very modest about them. Lucy only casually mentions that she is off to Glasgow the next day as, along with four other women, Lucy has been nominated for Scotswoman of the Year. I am delighted to say, as you may already know, Lucy won! It is a fitting tribute to an outstanding young woman, who constantly puts the needs of others before herself.

38

One thing about this event was concerning her – and that is the arrival of two dresses that she has chosen for the event and which she hopes will be delivered before her departure. Again I am happy to report, all went to plan and Lucy looked stunning. Lucy is nothing if not practical, much as she loves a long dress her chosen dress is knee length, as anything longer will not be suitable. For Lucy is in a wheelchair. She has motor neurone disease. MND is a cause that is very close to Rebecca and Joe Vickery’s hearts. Their good friend, Lucy, who they describe as a 24-year-old force of nature, was diagnosed with the incurable terminal illness at the age of 19. Lucy is the youngest person in Scotland with the disease but, despite this, continues to live every day to its fullest.

Never one to feel sorry for herself, Lucy has done quite the opposite and has immersed herself heart and soul into her various projects. She drew up a bucket list, setting herself challenge after challenge, aiming to raise awareness of the disease in the hope that someday a cure will be found for future generations. From the 14th of September this year, Rebecca (28) and her brother Joe (24) will embark on a once in a lifetime 5 day trek across the Great Wall of China to raise

funds for MND Scotland. The trip, organised by Global Adventure Challenges, will see a 46 strong team undertake the overseas challenge to raise awareness and funds. As well as this, the group will also get to give something back to the local community by helping to rebuild parts of the wall along the way. Individually Rebecca and Joe are aiming to raise £3,750 each before the trip and, to date, the group have already raised a massive £60,000 for MND Scotland, with an overall target of £165,000 to reach before the trip.

Lifestyle MAG

Lucy is one of the most loving, happiest and selfless people and it is why she continues to fight the odds and why Rebecca and Joe are so determined to reach their £3,750 target each before the trip. Over the coming months both Rebecca and Joe are continuing to fundraise through their JustGiving page, as well as running a series of fundraising events and activities on the lead up to the once in a lifetime trek for MND Scotland. 39

There are many adjectives in vogue these days to describe selfless people such as Lucy – amazing, awesome and inspirational immediately come to mind – but they have been bandied about so much of late that they have all but lost their meaning. No matter which words you use to try and describe Lucy, she is greater than the sum of their parts. She is much more than a collection of descriptive words; much, much more. If you met her, you would understand.

Iain McWhirter, head of fundraising at MND Scotland said “I’d like to thank Rebecca and Joe, and the 40 other MND Scotland fundraisers who will be joining them, for taking on this challenge of a lifetime. Without supporters like them we wouldn’t be able to continue providing vital support to people affected by MND across the country, and fund ground-breaking research towards a cure.”

About MND Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. This may cause someone to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or breathe unaided. There is currently no cure or effective treatment for MND and the average life expectancy from diagnosis is just 20 months.

On average almost 200 people are diagnosed each year in Scotland, 53% die within one year of diagnosis and 6.5% live for more than 5 years after diagnosis.* There are over 450 people in Scotland currently living with MND. *data from the Scottish MND Register 2015 and 2016.

MENTAL HEALTH

T

he reality of living with mental health issues – or supporting others with mental health issues – doesn’t really manifest itself until you are directly affected. Over the last few years I have recognised a growing social awareness and a more open minded dialogue around the equal value in taking care of ourselves, physically and mentally. Working in formal education, I have also seen an increase in the support available for students and a shifting confidence in seeking that support.

Photo credit: Jason Sinclair, Poppycock Films

Despite the precedence of this topic in both national strategy and work place agendas, I remained somewhat detached from the reality until I was faced with it in my own living room. Conversations with my partner, family members and friends have recently considered living with and managing depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Having little experience of this myself, I can’t always understand but try now to just listen. And after briefly researching local information, it became apparent that there was a lack of tools referring to the regional context. Back in September last year, we founded a new arts charity, Moray: Arts Development Engagement (M:ADE). The charitable aims of the organisation are to advance education, arts and heritage. This gave a timely platform for exploring the development of a new resource focused on male mental health. During an informal catch up at a seasonal networking event, Jason Sinclair –video maker and founder of Poppycock Films –agreed to work with M:ADE on the creation of digital material. Over Christmas and New Year –through the wonders of social media and an article in the newspaper – a number of men aged 18-43 had come forward with an interest in sharing their experiences to help others. 48

Brought together in the first instance through WhatsApp, the group were invisibly introduced to one another and asked to come together in February to generate content. What this would look like was to be planned on the day with their input and suggestions. Although vague and slightly under planned, the promise of breakfast and a shared common goal was enough to get eight strangers around a table at 9am on a Saturday morning. Naturally there were varying levels of nerves, comfort and apprehension. This quickly, and somewhat unexpectedly, transformed into four solid hours of discussion. It was enough to talk

together and then more directly through individual interviews; the artistic, visual image I’d had in my head slowly disappeared in amongst the stories and emotions. The organic flow, nods of shared understanding and genuine intrigue around how and where each other found hope, focus and direction superseded any orchestrated ideal we may have tried to capture. With content currently being edited, I don’t want to share too much more...neither would I do justice to the voices and narratives of those who took part. It was an extremely humbling experience hearing men of all ages, professions and backgrounds talk so honestly. Once complete the short film will be accessible online and will be distributed for learning purposes to schools, colleges and community groups. We also hope that it becomes a relatable resource for local training through the NHS and as a supporting tool for the wonderful work being carried out by the Moray Wellbeing Hub.

If you have been inspired by M:ADE there are other great arts and mental health activities this Spring you can get involved with. • Fantastic arts-based work in mental health is also to be found through Moray Write to Recovery groups. Designed to help people improve their wellbeing through sharing stories and experiences, these groups are now forming in your local area. More information available at moraywellbeinghub.org.uk. • With a launch on the 4th May at St Giles Church in the heart of Elgin high street (10am4pm), new group ARTS for Wellbeing are hosting the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival. Stay tuned into M:ADE social media to see the final results of the project. In the meantime, the key message to finish with, as stressed by each and every one of the guys that took part again and again and again, is that talking to someone is possibly the hardest thing to do,yet is the most important thing to do if feeling depressed, anxious or suicidal. Don’t let it consume you...coping can be learned and understood and recovery is possible.

ANNIVERSARY

T

he Scottish Charity, Keiran’s Legacy, was set up by Gordon and Sandra McKandie after Keiran, their only child, was involved in an accident on his bike on the 20th March 2016. Unfortunately Keiran did not survive the accident; he was only 16 years old. Over the past three years since Sandra and Gordon lost Keiran they have done amazing work through Keiran’s Legacy to provide life-saving defibrillators and deliver training. Ten defibrillators carrying Keiran’s name are now available in police cars across the north east of Scotland. This will ensure that if the police are the first on the scene of an incident with a non breathing, non responsive person they can act immediately, saving vital minutes. Gordon and Sandra have devoted themselves to raising awareness of the importance of defibrillators and have helped fundraise to install vital devices around Moray, including some remote areas.

Keiran’s Legacy will also deliver training to community groups. Newmill Village took advantage of this recently. Newmill Community Association applied for and received funding from the SSE resilience fund. They sited a defibrillator purchased from Keiran’s Legacy at the Village Hall. On the 19th and 22nd March nearly 30 people underwent training on CPR and the use of the defibrillator thanks to Yvonne from Keiran’s Legacy. Keiran’s Legacy also visits schools to offer CPR lessons to pupils, to ensure our young people are confident if ever they are in a situation where they are able to save a life. Keiran’s Legacy’s aim is to see defibrillators at all schools in Moray.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON FOR G THE OPENING OF Preview Week

O

ver the years, talented sports people and up and coming athletes from Moray have been forced to travel hundreds of miles for training or leave their home altogether to pursue their sporting careers. This highlighted the need for a large multi-purpose sports facility in Moray. The need for a state of the art centre that supports future sporting stars and gives people a friendly and welcoming place to keep active and provide a ‘fitter future for Moray’. The need for a place that is inclusive for all people, no matter of their age or ability. And that is why, in 2015, Moray Sports Foundation charity started working on plans with the community and fundraising to make this need for a Moray Sports Centre a reality.

With construction nearly complete for the impressive two storey sporting complex along Linkwood Road in Elgin, Moray Sports Centre will be accepting members from April ahead of opening its doors at the beginning of July 2019. 52

As You Go

The scale of Moray Sports Centre is incredible. The sports hall is the size of eight badminton courts, there are three studios, a 60+ station gym, moraysportsc entre meeting and therapy rooms, café/bar an@moraysports Moray Sparea, orts Founda outdoor fully inclusive playpark and a ‘Changing tion • Regist Places’ facility, which is a specialised accessible toilet with changing bench and hoist. There will be something for everyone, from beginners to professionals, and staff will be there every step of the way to offer assistance and a friendly face. WELL BEING FEELGOOD FITNESS

Say hi to hula Are you struggling to find a way to fit in fitness? Take 5 minutes morning and night to hula hoop your way to a more muscular middle!

H

ula hooping is a really effective way to strengthen your core and tone your midriff in time for shedding those layers when summer comes. Hooping works up to 30 separate muscles, from your legs and bum, up your abdominals and back and even your upper arms as you hold them up aloft above the hoop. It can help improve balance and is great for all ages and body shapes.

Top tips to get those revolutions rolling… • Start with the right sized hoop – when standing it should reach your navel from the floor. Too small and you’ll find it difficult to spin. • Sounds obvious but give yourself plenty of space to avoid bashing into things!

Consider a weighted hoop – they range from lightweight plastic to heavy weighted foamcovered metal gym hoops

Lifestyle MAG

with Petra Pennington

• Stand with your legs about hip-width apart for stability and hold the hoop around the small of your back. Push one side of it across your front to set it in motion around your waist. Try to push against it as it rolls around you – out with your tummy as it rolls over it, and then out with your lower spine as it moves around your back. • Focus your movement on the area you want the hoop to stay around. You can expect your ankles, knees and hips to flex a little to allow the movement to take place, but if you want the hoop to stay around your waist, your hips or knees shouldn’t be driving the motion. • Experiment with what feels best: having legs one in front of the other and moving your waist back and forth; or having them under each hip and moving side to side. • Once you’ve got the basics, try to hula around your hips, chest and arms. Build it into your daily routine – even a quick blast twice a day while you’re brushing your teeth will enable you to make fast gains in skill and tone. Before you know it, it will be second nature and you’ll have toned up those muscles. Happy hooping! 55

DANCE

T

he Dance School is run by four girls who themselves were trained by Nicola Lafferty, who is a World Champion Dance teacher from Glasgow. Nicola initially came up every week to Buckie but now Shannen Innes, Joy Morrison, Carla Duncan and Eilidh Murray run the school. The dance school has around 80 to 90 students, ranging in age from 4 to 24 years old. The oldest members are the dance teachers themselves, who have been dancing from a very young age and have the expertise to deliver weekly lessons. Techniques in various dance styles are taught including Cha Cha, Waltz, West Coast Swing, Street and Polka, as well as corner work and social dances. Their prowess is showcased every year in a performancethat demonstrates to family and friends what they have learned throughout the year. They have a busy schedule: over 20 of the dancers are heading to Ireland on the

29th March to compete in the European Championships and they also have a show coming up in May which includes dancing to music from the highly acclaimed ‘Greatest Showman’. In August, the World Masters is held in Blackpool Winter Gardens and around 30 of the dancers will compete. In addition, the teachers also still compete in the top divisions. iDance are the only dance school to represent Scotland in these competitions. The world’s championships attract over 24 countries entering to win the crown of World Champion and are held in the prestigious Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The Championships also attract a huge number of social dancers. The girls dance to both country music and noncountry music in various solo styles, as well as dancing in Duos, Quads and Team dances. The iDance Team held the World Dance Masters title

for 3 consecutive years. Some of the girls also compete in Pro-am dancing with a Professional male partner, James McLaughlin from Mintlaw. They progress up divisions depending on their abilities and age group. The girls have monthly lessons to prepare for the competitions from Nicola Lafferty, Professional dancer/ teacher and Director of World Dance Masters who travels up from Glasgow to give private lessons. The dancers also value the opportunity for the social dancing events held after competitions. The girls have lots of fun competing in the competitions both locally in Buckie and Peterhead and also travelling and meeting their dance friends in wider competitions in London, Ireland, Blackpool, and France. To compete in

the events they have professional dance cowboy boots and as well as the very glamourous outfits with lots of sparkle! The competitions run by World Dance Masters, are judged by top professional dancers and teachers, from all over the world, who also choreograph a lot of the competition dances too. This years World Championship event in Blackpool celebrates the 10th anniversary of World Dance Masters and is expected to be a sell out. Shannen, Carla and Joy also dance in the elite line dance troup ‘Countryvive’ who reached the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2014. iDance Classes are held every Monday at Buckie High School find information on Facebook. 57

Farming threat from No Deal Brexit

Deal or no Deal

January began with my grilling Michael Gove in London and finished with my being grilled by hill farmers in Stirling. Robert McDonald who farms near Grantown-on-Spey, chairs the committee of the National Farmers Union that deals with policy on less favoured areas including our hill farmers in Scotland. I was able to assure him and his colleagues that the Scottish Government will maintain the valued LFASS scheme support this year at its full 100% level, and that although under EU rules it is to

reduce in subsequent years, we have committed to avoiding it falling below an effective rate of 80%. In the longer term, we have a plan in place to provide stability and simplicity – farm and rural support payments will stay exactly as they are now until 2021. Between 2021 and 2024, we will seek to streamline current CAP schemes to free up resource to test new ideas and programmes, for example to support more young people into farming and other rural industries. From 2024, we will introduce a whole new approach to rural support. My key concern, however, about the impact of Brexit is on our people. I have been engaging with organisations to ensure that there are ways to provide advice and support for people in rural

We also need communities to look out for each other and I would encourage everyone in Moray to check in on neighbours and friends whom they are worried about. But most of all, my longer term worry is that we lose the EU citizens and their families who have chosen or would have chosen to make their lives in Scotland. We simply cannot afford to lose people from key sectors like fish processing, government veterinary services, forestry and rural tourism and hospitality. So my message to them is clear – and I hope it is one you will all share and reiterate at every opportunity. EU citizens are welcome here in Scotland. We want you to stay. 61
