Merry Christmas!

It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle of preparing for Christmas and lose sight of what truly makes the season magical: cherished traditions, delicious food and, most importantly, the joy of gathering with loved ones. I find that I enjoy the holidays most when I start my shopping early. This gives me time to choose something special for each person on my list rather than scrambling at the last minute and tossing random items into an Amazon cart. There’s no joy in that – it turns gift-giving into an obligation rather than an expression of love and care.

Luckily, Aiken is a shopper’s dream! Our local businesses offer a fantastic array of unique gifts for every taste, making it easy to find something meaningful while supporting our community. Take Aiken Embroidery, for example, where you can discover personalized treasures perfect for adding that extra-special touch. You’ll find some of our favorite picks inside this issue.

Jeannette Mosley of Flawless Glow Spa and Salon shares her top product and treatment recommendations for holiday gifts that pamper and impress.

As we dive into holiday traditions, the amazing Aiken City Lifestyle team share some of their favorite family customs. Their stories highlight the beauty and warmth that traditions add to the season.

On the inspiration front, don’t miss the remarkable story of Tasha Davis, whose journey from serving at the Aiken Brew Pub to owning a wellness spa downtown is nothing short of inspiring.

Plus, we were invited into the home of Jo and John Galamback, who graciously shared their stunning collection of Christmas ornaments – each one with a unique story behind it. I am sure you will agree that the photos are stunning.

With my shopping done early this year, I’m looking forward to relaxing with my family as we celebrate the reason for the season.

Wishing you a peaceful and joyful holiday season – see you in the New Year!

RESTAURANT SERVER TO HEALER

TASHA DAVIS’S JOURNEY AND DEDICATION TO HER HOMETOWN

Tasha Davis, owner and nurse practitioner of Downtown Hydration and Wellness in Aiken, SC, epitomizes perseverance and a deep-rooted commitment to her community. With a long and meaningful history in Aiken, her journey to owning a thriving wellness business is due to her determination and passion for helping others.

Davis’s story began in her early days as a restaurant server at the Aiken Brew Pub, where she worked tirelessly to support her two boys while pursuing her nursing education. Balancing being a single mother, attending nursing school and working full time wasn’t easy, but she was determined to lead by example for her sons. “I knew I couldn’t raise them to pursue their dreams if I wasn’t willing to do the same for myself,” she says, reflecting on those challenging years. Her love for health and wellness extended beyond her job at the pub; she also led exercise classes, a role that sparked her passion for helping people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

After completing her nursing degree, Tasha’s career took her to the local emergency room where she gained critical experience dealing with a wide range of medical conditions. Later, she became a nurse practitioner at a local primary care office. Despite her growing expertise, Davis began to feel discouraged by the constraints she encountered in the traditional healthcare system. “I felt limited in how I could treat patients,” she recalls. The rigid protocols, insurance guidelines and limited scope of treatment left her feeling that she couldn’t fully address the needs of her patients.

Tasha’s true calling came into focus when a family member fell ill with a mysterious medical condition. Faced with uncertainty, she dived deep into research, exploring alternative remedies

and treatments. “That’s when it all clicked for me,” she says. “I knew I wanted to open a wellness and patient-focused business where I could really make a difference.”

Downtown Hydration and Wellness, located at 120 Laurens Street NW, is the realization of that dream. Offering IV hydration, injections, medically managed weight loss and comprehensive wellness evaluations, Davis’s practice is centered around helping patients feel revitalized and thrive on their wellness journeys. Every new patient gets a free 15-minute telehealth consult. “IV therapy can truly change lives,” Davis explains, noting how quickly patients can experience improved energy, immune system and overall health. For her, it’s not just about the treatments but about listening to and partnering with her patients so they leave each visit inspired and empowered. “There’s often a lack of communication between providers and patients in traditional healthcare. I wanted to create a space where people feel heard, where their goals and concerns are at the forefront.”

Tasha’s dedication to her patients is matched by her deep connection to Aiken, the city that has supported her from the very beginning. From her early days of waiting tables at the Aiken Brew Pub to now owning her business downtown, the local community has been a constant source of encouragement. “It’s amazing to be treating some of the same people I used to serve at the Brew Pub,” she says with a smile. This full-circle moment is something she cherishes, a reflection of how far she’s come and the strong ties she’s maintained in the town she calls home.

For Davis, Downtown Hydration and Wellness isn’t just a business; it’s a personal mission to help her community thrive. She recognizes that many people feel overwhelmed or stuck in their health journeys and views her role as assisting them to “hit the reset button” and feel like brand new versions of themselves. Her holistic approach focuses on preventive care and overall wellness rather than just addressing symptoms.

Her gratitude for the support she’s received from the Aiken community is evident in everything she does. Davis often reflects on how Aiken has cheered her on every step of the way, from her time as a single mom juggling multiple responsibilities to becoming a successful entrepreneur and healthcare provider. “This town has been behind me from the start, and I’m so thankful for that,” she says. As she looks ahead, Davis is excited to continue growing her practice and helping more people in Aiken discover the benefits of wellness-focused care.

Davis’s journey from server to nurse practitioner and business owner is one of resilience, passion and a deep commitment to her hometown. Through Downtown Hydration and Wellness, she is fulfilling her dreams and helping her patients realize theirs, one IV session at a time.

HOLIDAY RADIANCE FROM FLAWLESS GLOW

Get Your Glow for the Holiday Season with These Products and Services

As Christmas approaches, Jeannette Moseley, owner of Flawless Glow Studio and Spa, is sharing her favorite services and treatments to gift to loved ones this holiday season. Her top picks offer both luxury and visible results, making them perfect presents for anyone looking to treat themselves or others to a holiday glow-up.

Moseley highlights the effectiveness of her Korean skincare lines, particularly KRX and Corthe. “These products are revolutionary,” she explains. “They’re scientifically advanced and results-driven yet simple enough to use at home.” What makes these lines stand out is their ability to deliver swift, effective results for all ages and skin types. Whether you’re looking to combat aging, reduce inflammation or improve your overall complexion, these products

have something to offer everyone. “I love gifting these products because I know they work for everyone,” Moseley adds.

Next on her list is the powerful combination of the carboxy gel treatment with a V-lift. The carboxy gel treatment works by creating a Bohr effect, a chemical process that oxygenates the skin and improves its appearance. This treatment is ideal for all skin types and can dramatically enhance the skin’s texture and tone. Paired with the V-lift, which is packed CONTINUED

with peptides, this duo works to improve the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, increase collagen synthesis and lift and smooth the skin. “It’s one of my favorites because the results are so transformative,” she shares. “It makes a life-changing and wonderful gift for anyone looking to rejuvenate their skin.”

Finally, Moseley offers her Japanese head spa, the only one in the area, for those seeking ultimate relaxation and scalp rejuvenation. This treatment deeply cleanses and revitalizes the scalp while providing a state-of-the-art spa experience. For added convenience, clients are now offered the option to blow dry and style their own hair after the treatment or book a post-head spa blowout with one of her spa professionals. “This is the perfect gift for someone who needs a little relaxation and pampering,” she says.

For those looking to give the gift of glowing skin or relaxation this Christmas, Moseley offers gift certificates for both services and products. Whether it’s a luxurious skincare set, a rejuvenating facial treatment or a soothing head spa, Flawless Glow Studio and Spa has something for everyone this holiday season.

“IT MAKES A LIFE-CHANGING AND WONDERFUL GIFT FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO REJUVENATE THEIR SKIN.”

30 Y E A R S OF CHRISTMAS MAGIC

Jo and John Galamback’s Adventure Collecting Patricia Breen Christmas Ornaments

For Jo and John Galamback, Christmas isn’t just a holiday—it’s a celebration of art, history and cherished memories. Over the past 30 years, the couple, who have lived in their Woodside home since the early 1990s, have built an extraordinary collection of Patricia Breen Christmas ornaments.

Jo and John’s story begins unexpectedly, like many others. John was sent to Aiken from Philadelphia thirty years ago on a temporary three-week assignment. Jo stayed home, battling winter snow drifts at the time, while John enjoyed the sunny South. That three-week assignment ended up being much longer as John fell in love with Aiken and didn’t want to leave. Jo eventually followed, and they began their life here.

Their journey into the world of Patricia Breen ornaments started with a seemingly innocuous phone call from the owner of a Christmas shop they visited annually during their regular September vacations along the

Southeast coast. The merchant explained that because they were such good customers, they had won the right to purchase a limited-edition ornament by an up-and-coming artist, Patricia Breen. Jo was initially skeptical. “Why would I spend $93 on something for a Christmas tree?” she had asked. The store owner’s reply, “Trust me,” marked the beginning of their collection.

Over the years, Jo and John’s relationship with Patricia Breen herself has become just as valuable as the ornaments they collect. First introduced to her work in 1995, they’ve followed her artistic journey ever since. Breen, an art major who began making ornaments while living in Poland with her husband, created pieces that stood out for their fine detail, hand-painted designs and intricate craftsmanship.

Each ornament is a mouth-blown, limited-edition piece with molds destroyed after production, ensuring their rarity. The ornaments are hand-painted by a team of artists in Krakow, Poland, under Breen’s careful guidance, incorporating custom glitter, Swarovski crystals and

“Each ornament they own has a story whether it’s a rare color variant, a piece won at an event or one of Breen’s earliest creations.”

unique designs. The couple’s collection includes some of Breen’s earliest creations which were ordered from simple drawings with no idea what the final color or details would be.

The Galambacks’ collection snowballed with Jo and John attending events across the country, from Texas to Connecticut, meeting Breen and other collectors. The ornaments they collected weren’t just decorations; they were fine art pieces, each with its own story and meaning. They became regular attendees at Patricia Breen’s exclusive events where collectors could place orders for new designs and win unique pieces like the garland John once won after attending seven consecutive events.

Many of the ornaments in their collection are tied to these events and to personal moments, making them even more special. Some of their most prized pieces include a Swarovski crystal-encrusted strawberry, early renditions of Copernicus and mistletoe eggs—a set of 60 to 70 that Jo proudly amassed.

Jo and John's collection is about more than just the physical ornaments. It represents their love for Christmas, their admiration for Breen’s artistry and the special memories they've built over the years. Each ornament they own has a story, whether it’s a rare color variant, a piece won at an event or one of Breen’s earliest creations.

From their first piece purchased 30 years ago to the hundreds of ornaments they now own, Jo and John’s Patricia Breen collection is a testament to their love of art, tradition and the magic of Christmas. Their collection is lovingly displayed on multiple trees in their Woodside home each holiday season. The trees boast rotating tree stands so holiday guests can fully enjoy each and every piece. Their home is more than just a place filled with beautiful decorations; it’s a gallery of memories, each ornament a chapter in their lives.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

Campaign THE RED TICKET

MORE REASONS THAN EVER TO SHOP AIKEN THIS CHRISTMAS

I had the opportunity to have a Q&A session with Jim Tunison, President & CEO of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, and Sarah Schultz, Director of Membership Services, about their Red Ticket Campaign. This initiative began three years ago and has generated over five million dollars spent at local businesses.

“Their customers get very excited about getting their tickets after shopping. They appreciate the support they receive as a small business because of this event and how it often brings out-of-town visitors into the shop.”

Q: How did the Red Ticket Campaign begin, and why was it started?

A: The year after Covid, we wanted to find a way to get people out to support small businesses again. Many people got used to the “Covid click” and adding items to their online carts. One of our ambassadors saw a similar campaign in another city and thought it was an excellent idea for Aiken.

Q: How do people participate in the Red Ticket Campaign, and how do the tickets work?

A: We will publish a list of our participants, who are all members of the Aiken Chamber. When you shop in any of these participating businesses, you receive a red ticket for every $25 spent. The more you spend, the better your chances of winning some cash or a gift card. Our staff members collect the tickets from the businesses every week. Starting November 4th, we will do a Facebook Live drawing every Monday at 5 p.m. The drawings are every Monday except for Veterans Day.

Q: What feedback have you heard from the participating businesses about this campaign?

A: The merchants love this campaign. They enjoy the interaction it brings with their customers. Their customers get very excited about getting their tickets after shopping. They appreciate the support they receive as a small business because of this event and how it often brings outof-town visitors into the shop.

Q: Why is the initiative to promote and support local businesses so important to you and the Aiken Chamber?

A: 85% of our memberships are small businesses with ten or fewer employees. Small businesses make up the heart of downtown and make Aiken unique.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

From making my mom’s famous eggnog to donning matching family plaid shirts, the Bryan family embraces Christmas traditions. But none are so dear as the annual meeting of “Papa’s Christmas Sweater Club.” Since my dad’s passing years ago, my kids and I have honored his memory by wearing his treasured Christmas sweaters when we gather for our Christmas Eve celebration. Some years it is easier to fit in the sweaters than others based on how much eggnog we’ve enjoyed! Also, Santa appears at my house every year on Christmas Eve.

We have our big family night with cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandmother on Christmas Adam (Adam comes before Eve) with a big meal and gifts. Then, on Christmas Eve, just the four of us go to a movie and eat out somewhere fun, like a Japanese restaurant or Waffle House.

My favorite Christmas tradition is Christmas Eve. We always go to a candlelight Christmas Eve service at NewSpring Church. Afterwards we pick up Chinese takeout and go home and bake Christmas cookies. We end the night with cookies, glass bottle cokes and a Christmas movie with our kids.

My family bakes fresh cookies while watching Christmas movies every Christmas Eve. Right before we go to bed we throw out *magic* reindeer mix so Santa’s reindeer see our house first!

My family does communion Christmas morning before we exchange gifts. ‘Tis the reason for the season.
