Investing in What Matters

As we step into April, a month of renewal and growth, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the power of investment—not just in the financial sense, but in all the ways we can enrich our lives, our community, and our future. True investment isn’t only about stocks and savings; it’s about where we choose to place our time, energy, and resources to create a life of meaning and lasting value.

One of the greatest investments we can make is in our community. The strength of a city is built on the dedication of its people—those who uplift local businesses, engage in community initiatives, and support the arts. Every ticket purchased for a local performance, every visit to an independent gallery, and every effort to preserve cultural traditions contributes to a more vibrant and connected society. The arts, in particular, breathe life into our surroundings, telling stories that inspire and unite us. By supporting artists and creators, we invest in the cultural richness that makes our city a place of passion and expression.

But beyond our community, we must also remember to invest in ourselves. Personal growth is a lifelong journey, and the choices we make today—whether in education, health, or personal well-being—shape the future we build for ourselves. Perhaps it’s time to take that class you’ve been considering, start a new fitness routine, or carve out space for creative pursuits that bring you joy. When we prioritize self-improvement, we gain confidence, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Of course, a well-rounded investment strategy also includes securing our financial and legal future. Thoughtful planning—whether through smart financial decisions, property investments, or legal safeguards—ensures stability and peace of mind for the road ahead. Taking the time to plan today allows us to build a future where we have the freedom and security to pursue our dreams while protecting the legacy we leave behind.

April is a reminder that what we invest in today will shape the world we live in tomorrow. Whether it’s through the connections we foster, the creativity we support, the knowledge we seek, or the financial security we build, every step we take toward meaningful investment makes a difference. Let’s make this a month of purposeful action—investing in what truly matters and creating a future we can all be proud of.

Warmly,

April 2025

More than Just a Tax Accountant

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADELINE

MERRICK: MERRICK MULTIMEDIA

With tax codes getting more complicated, it’s easy for everyone to feel overwhelmed. Thankfully, the team at Altland & Harris Financial Group combines the knowledge, experience, kindness, and guidance that individuals and small business owners need to navigate complicated tax laws. Henry Harris III, owner and CEO of Altland & Harris, took time to answer some questions about how individuals and business owners can shift their thinking to help their financial future.

HOW THE ALTLAND & HARRIS FINANCIAL

GROUP HELPS YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS

“WE'RE FOCUSED ON BEING MORE OF A CONSULTATIVE FINANCIAL PARTNER THAN JUST A TRANSACTIONAL PLACE THAT CAN PREPARE YOUR TAX RETURN FOR YOU.”

HOW DO YOU HELP BUSINESS OWNERS WITH THEIR TAX EFFICIENCY?

First of all, we look at what's on your mind. What's going on with you this year, and what are you thinking about for next year? We work to find out what the business owners’ overall goals are—before they just tell me they want to pay as little as possible on taxes for the year. Perhaps they are planning on building their business. Are they going to need funding? If so, then minimizing their taxable income may not be what they want to do right now.

At the end of the day, we're focused on being more of a consultative financial partner than just a transactional place that can prepare your tax return for you. I don't want to find out after you've done something, so most of our clients have been "groomed" to come to us before they make major decisions. For example, if they want to pass the business on to the next generation, we like to know beforehand.

One of the goals that we have at our firm is to get to know your particular business. We take field trips to client sites to see the client in their element. It helps us know what we're accounting for, ask more intelligent questions, and have insight into their actual business. CONTINUED >

WHAT IS COMMITTED BENEVOLENT INTEREST (CBI) AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

CBI is a philosophy that speaks to preferring to help others by what we do.  The very nature of what we do is to help other people and look out for them by assessing and aiding others in achieving their dreams and desires—whether it be investment planning or tax planning.

People have a lot of needs, and what we do isn't necessarily restricted to just tax returns. At first, I didn't realize how much people relied on us for different things at different times. For example, when a loved one gets ill and goes to a nursing home, we sometimes get calls to help.  When someone passes, a surviving family member may need additional hand-holding.  When these events happen, people need somebody that they can trust to help them navigate the process.  And a lot of times, we offer to be that “somebody.”

HOW CAN THE SBDC HELP SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS DURING TAX TIME?

The SBDC provides an array of classes and resources designed to get new businesses off to a good start.  We started with SBDC, the Small Business Development Center, a number of years ago in order to offer a small business tax workshop.  Most people go into business because they have a passion for a particular thing, whether it be photography, cooking, or something else. The last thing on their mind is accounting and taxes.  So, we offer the class to say, “Here are some major things that you need to be aware of.”

Small business owners may start out thinking, “You know what? I'm going to try and do this myself.” Go ahead and deal with it is what I say! You'll get smarter about some things, and at some point, you will get to a place where you say, “Okay, things are taking off, and I don't need to be spending my time doing this.” And when that time comes, we'll still be here.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH

As the cost of living continues to inflate, local nonprofit Top Achievers Foundation equips the next generation with the skills to achieve financial independence. Located in Collin County, the six-session Youth Financial Literacy class aims to ensure middle and high school students understand what it takes to live their dream lifestyle.

"Financial literacy is the foundation of a stable future," says Lawrence Mann, Top Achievers CEO. "We want young people to understand the importance of making informed financial decisions early on."

The free workshop, offered in partnership with area financial institutions, covers budgeting, saving, and credit management through interactive lessons and lectures from industry experts.

Floyd Jahner, former CFO and COO of the Dallas Mavericks, has shared his expertise as a guest lecturer since the class began in 2020.  "We want to get kids to start thinking about finances," says Jahner. "We want to get them started early, so they're not an adult thinking, 'Oh no, how am I going to make this work?'"

Top Achievers got its start in 1996 when Mann's five-year-old son underwent heart surgery. Mann says he made a deal with God: "Save my son, and I will dedicate my life to empowering the next generation."

While financial literacy is one of the foundation’s offerings, the nonprofit aims to ensure students gain well-rounded skills to thrive in adulthood. Other core pillars of the nonprofit's mission include mentorship, sports training, STEAM education, and collegiate scholarships.

The two-hour Youth Financial Literacy class is offered on Saturdays twice a month.

For those looking to volunteer, find programming for their child, or make a financial donation, visit topachieversplano.org. You can also attend the organization’s annual fundraiser May 22 at First United Bank, 3930 Dallas Pkwy.

Programs Offered by Top Achievers

• Financial Literacy - Twice monthly workshops aimed at teaching those in grades 6-12 the skills needed to be financially stable as an adult.

• STEAM - Quarterly camps focusing on subjects such as CRISPR, crystallography, rocket combustion, and more.

• Basketball – Annual competitive league aimed at instilling motivation, grit, commitment, and a growth mindset in today’s youth. Separate leagues offered for middle school/high school and genders.

• Mentorship – Year-round, one-on-one mentorship and guidance on becoming a first-generation college student or becoming a productive member of society.

• E-sports – Year-round programming  that uses e-sports as the catalyst to instill motivation, grit, commitment, and growth mindset to today’s youth.

A LOCAL LAW FIRM WITH ROOTS IN ALLEN INVESTS IN COMMUNITY

For many, traveling through the world of attorneys, probate courts, and complex laws often feels confusing. The team at Allen Texas Attorneys understands how finding appropriate legal representation can be challenging and strives to make their clients’ journey easier and less stressful.

Allen Texas Attorneys represents clients in Allen, Collin County, and surrounding North Texas areas. “What unites our team is our shared values and common goals,” reflects Elizabeth Dean, Senior Attorney and Founding Member. “These include service to the community, commitment to family, and professional legal advice at reasonable rates. We want to be accessible, especially for local family and small businesses. We work very closely with our clients to determine what their needs are, map out an action plan, and educate along the way.”

In 2025, the firm is focused on going deep, not wide, and showing up daily for its clients and nurturing relationships within the community. “My partner, Carolyn, and I give out our cell phone numbers to clients so they can reach us, even on weekends, if necessary,” Dean says.

In addition to a bustling for-profit client workload, the firm engages in multiple nonprofit service projects such as Toys for Tots, the Allen Food Pantry, Secret Santa, and sponsoring local school events such as basketball booster clubs or charity auctions.

Allen Texas Attorneys has four attorneys, four paralegals, and other support staff.  “We choose staff based on their professionalism, their passion to help people, and having a good heart,” says Dean.  What makes Allen Texas Attorneys different from other law firms? Find out more about each team member:

Elizabeth Morrison Dean

Senior Attorney and Managing Member

Elizabeth Morrison Dean, Senior Attorney and Managing Member, is a native of Allen. "Throughout my life, I have actively volunteered with charitable organizations in North Texas, serving as the lead liaison for Allen Community Outreach (ACO) for 10 years.  My commitment to service continues in my work for the community at Allen Texas Attorneys." Her core areas of focus include estate planning, probate, real estate, business formation, contract drafting and review, litigation, and general matters.

Attorney Kayla Smith Wood

Kayla Smith Wood, Attorney, focuses on estate planning. She is an avid, worldwide traveler and the parent of a child with special needs. She understands the importance of and need for a customized estate plan, which may include wills, powers of attorney, designation of guardianship, and trusts. “Without a written estate plan, the state of Texas makes all those personal decisions, so it’s critical that individuals clearly document their instructions for medical care, distribution of assets, and care for young children. I’m here to guide clients through this important process.”

John Schulmeister

Attorney

John Schulmeister, Attorney, focuses primarily on Criminal Defense, Juvenile, Probate, and Estate Planning. He was born and raised in Allen and graduated from Allen High School in 2008. John played Varsity Baseball for the Eagles, was named to the All-District Team, and continued the baseball legacy while at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. “One of the most rewarding parts of my practice is helping clients navigate the legal complexity after losing a loved one. It is already hard enough to lose someone dear. We, at Allen Texas Attorneys, are here to help ease that burden by walking our clients through the probate process, giving them not only peace of mind, but more time to focus on what matters: being with family.”

A Message from "A Man in Finance"

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADELINE MERRICK: MERRICK MULTIMEDIA
Bill Fruit Shares His Decades of Experience
“People know where they are, but they don’t always know where they want to be. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you ever get there?”

For over 30 years, Bill Fruit has been guiding individuals as well as large and small businesses on their financial journeys. He has built a life centered on family, community, and helping others achieve their financial dreams. A devoted husband to Catherine for 32 years and a proud father of three daughters, Bill’s journey is one of balance—balancing his love for family, his passion for numbers, and his commitment to helping others gain financial security.

With an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering and an MBA in Corporate Finance, Bill’s path to becoming a financial advisor wasn’t traditional, but it was purposeful. After spending more than two decades in corporate America as a finance officer, his desire to make a personal impact led him to transition into financial advising. Bill has been a trusted financial advisor at Edward Jones since 2017, where he works alongside his registered branch associate, Traci Bridgman, to provide personalized investment strategies to individuals and small businesses.

Investing successfully requires a clear plan. According to Bill, the first step is understanding your current financial

situation—taking stock of income, expenses, debt, and savings. Next, define where you want to be financially in the future. Whether it’s saving for retirement, funding a child’s education, or simply building wealth, having a clear goal is essential.

Once you know your starting point and destination, the next step is analysis. Ask yourself: If I continue my current path, will I reach my goal? If the answer is no, adjustments need to be made. This is where a financial advisor like Bill can provide guidance by creating a tailored investment strategy that aligns risk tolerance and time horizon.

One of the most common mistakes Bill sees is individuals trying to time the market. Many believe they can outsmart market fluctuations by buying and selling at the right time, but history has shown that a long-term, disciplined approach yields better results. Another pitfall is failing to balance current consumption with future needs.

"People know where they are, but they don’t always know where they want to be. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you ever get there?" Bill emphasizes the importance of setting goals and following a strategic plan.

Bill’s approach to investing follows a simple but effective process:

• Assess your current financial position

– Know your assets, liabilities, income, and expenses.

• Define your goals – Identify what you want to achieve financially.

• Develop a plan – Choose investment strategies that align with your goals and risk tolerance.

• Stay disciplined – Avoid emotional decisions and stick to your plan.

• Regularly review your progress – Life changes, and so should your financial strategy. Bill reviews his clients’ plans at least once a year to ensure they remain on track.

Bill and his team are committed to helping clients make informed financial decisions. When asked about his own retirement plans, Bill said, "As long as I’m healthy mentally and physically, I’m going to keep doing what I do. We love the area, and our friends and our church are here." His passion for helping others achieve financial stability is evident in the relationships he builds and the counsel he provides.

Investing doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right approach, discipline, and guidance, anyone can take steps toward a more secure financial future.

First Responder of the Month

The Heart Behind the Headset: Life as a 911 Dispatcher

When Jennifer Stavinoha answers a call, it’s often the worst day of someone’s life. As a telecom officer for the past three years, she handles emergencies with calm precision, offering critical support in high-stress situations. Yet outside of her demanding job, Jennifer is a fun-loving, compassionate person who finds joy in simple things—like her six rescue cats and red heeler, all of whom make her Plano home a lively place.

Growing up in Allen, Jennifer excelled in AP and dualcredit courses before earning a full scholarship to UT Tyler, where she studied Psychology in Criminal Justice. Her background helps her understand mental distress in callers, and she still references her old textbooks to put names to behaviors.

Despite the intense nature of her job, Jennifer and her coworkers find ways to decompress, whether it’s knitting between calls or sharing stories—though she and her NICU nurse sister set boundaries at family dinners.

"We don’t get a lot of closure. If a case really rattles us, we’ll call the fire department to check in. It helps us move on."

From handling holiday disputes to bizarre emergencies like a garage turkey fire, Jennifer is the steady voice guiding people through chaos, proving that even behind the headset, there’s a heart that cares.

STUDENT of the MONTH

Amelia, a junior at Allen High School, is bubbly, kind, and busy—but there's something special about her mornings. She arrives at school with Pruitt, a service dog in training. “He’s definitely one of the highlights of everyone's day,” she says. Through the Allen FFA’s partnership with Canine Companions, Amelia is teaching Pruitt basic commands so that he may enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.

But this wasn’t always her path. “I didn't originally  know what I was gonna do in high school,” she recalls. But when her friend Campbell suggested Ag Sciences, Amelia decided to join in. At first, Amelia thought she may want to be a vet, but a hatred for “anything yucky” led her to change her mind. “I want to be an agricultural educator. My Ag teacher, Mr. Brill, inspired me to do it. So now I'm just following his footsteps.”

In addition to being the secretary of the Allen High School FFA and raising Pruitt, Amelia also enjoys the Flower of the Month club for students in floral design. Once a month, Amelia makes a flower arrangement to give to someone. "It’s definitely something really cool that we do at Allen.”

Amelia stays busy with the many different activities offered by Allen High School’s chapter of the FFA. Here are some fast facts about this special student!

• Amelia’s favorite TV show is Gilmore Girls.

• She’s often visited the UK, where her family is from, but she hopes to visit more of Europe in the future.

• Her favorite food is her mom’s spaghetti hot dogs.

SECURE YOUR FUTURE

DISCOVERING THE TRUE VALUE OF INSURANCE FOR LONG-TERM SECURITY

Navigating the world of insurance—policies, claims, premiums, and endorsements—can be overwhelming. However, these essential tools not only safeguard against unexpected events but also contribute to a secure financial future for you and your loved ones. Working with an insurance agency can help to effectively protect your assets and ensure peace of mind. We sat down with local State Farm agency owner Daniel Borden to discuss the importance of both diversifying your insurance coverage and having a dedicated insurance agency.

“With hundreds of policies in Texas, it’s crucial to speak with a reputable agent regarding what’s covered, what’s not covered, and what your options are.”

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS CONSUMERS SHOULD BE MINDFUL OF?

“First, I recommend looking at your home insurance. With hundreds of policies in Texas, it’s crucial to speak with a reputable agent regarding what’s covered, what’s not covered, and what your options are. For example, a client’s home had a slab leak that damaged her wood floors, kitchen cabinets, and baseboards. We covered the entire loss—$117,000—because of our premium endorsements. Most companies would have only covered $5,000 and left the rest to the customer.

“Second, understand how to optimize your rates. A ‘mutual’ company (that is, a company owned by policyholders, not stakeholders) that offers loyalty discounts could save thousands more long-term than 'shopping’ at every renewal. Also, know whether to file a claim or not, because claims stay on file even if nothing pays out. Having a solid agency in your corner is crucial to checking your deductible first and helping you determine if filing a claim is the right move.

“Third, protecting what’s probably your largest asset—your income. We find only 50% of folks have life insurance, and many that do only have 1-2 times their salary through work benefits, which are not guaranteed and often take several months to pay your family. In the event of an untimely passing, we only have one chance at getting that claim right for your loved ones.”

WHAT TOP THREE ITEMS SHOULD A CONSUMER HAVE IN THEIR INSURANCE PORTFOLIO?

• “The first and foremost item to have is a customized life insurance plan. Even though death is the only guaranteed claim, most people are insufficiently covered. In Allen, the average household makes over $5,000,000 before retiring. Fortunately, there are ways to both optimize life insurance costs and enjoy benefits while living. A great life insurance plan will not just cover a death claim but also help pay for things that are important now, such as education, rainy-day funds, and business ventures.”

• “The second item is called a liability umbrella policy, which covers you for liability claims against you above what your home or car insurance covers. For example, we’ve had clients who were liable for accidents on crosswalks with pedestrians, rolled golf carts, and even head injuries from falls at their homes. When these cases passed their home and car insurance limits, our liability umbrella policy covered them every time. This policy is a blanket policy that guarantees your insurance company will settle those large claims that would drain your net worth if not covered.”

• “The third is an agency that cares, that educates, and that is responsive. When you experience a loss, nothing beats having a team that works for you and knows how to help. We’ve learned over the years that not all agency teams are as passionate about doing right for their clients. Find an agency that will go to bat for you when you need it. A good team can optimize rates, explain important details, and give good advice."

“Investing in my team directly impacts the business and our clients. The team loves taking care of our clients every day.”

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU DO TO INVEST IN YOUR TEAM AND YOUR BUSINESS?

“My vision is to create a workplace that improves the quality of life for my employees. CHILDREN'S ENTREPRENEUR MARKET

Fairview Economic Development Corporation Offers a Boost to Youthful Ambition

New business ventures are like rockets. To reach orbital altitude, the payload must be lean so the ship can escape gravity’s pull. The fuel must be powerful and plentiful. And that potent energy must be controlled with a highly sophisticated guidance system.

It’s a nearly impossible demand, but when it succeeds, the result is spectacular.

That’s why Utah-based Children’s Entrepreneur Market is working to train the next generation of “rocket scientists” who hope to propel their businesses to success.

“We believe the Children’s Entrepreneur Market can positively influence a lot of young lives,” said Lynée Fife, director of the program. “The principles of innovation, leadership, and hard work are lessons that will stay with them throughout their lives.”

The upshot for the rest of us is the boost to our economic future. In a recent decade evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, small businesses generated more than half of all new jobs.

To date, nearly 50,000 children ages 5 to 17 have participated in the nationwide Children’s Entrepreneur Market program. Youngsters are the driving force behind every aspect of the markets, from creating and curating merchandise to making the sale.

Parents are allowed to assist when needed, but during markets, children must interact directly with customers, answering questions and handling all the money. Many of the young vendors use apps to process payments, and they are well-versed in how it all works.

“When Beckham was barely eight years old, he was teaching these adults how to use Venmo. It was pretty cute,” said Christine Bullajian, a Fairview mother of three. All her children participate in area Children’s Entrepreneur Markets.

Beckham Bullajian’s older sister, Halle, won a $250 scholarship from Children’s Entrepreneur Market for the innovation and work she put into her business.

“The kicker is these kids are selling really amazing stuff,” said Fairview Interim Economic Development Manager Dave Quinn. “The kids are clearly putting enormous time and energy into making their businesses successful, and the longterm payoff is bound to be phenomenal.”

The markets are relatively small in scale and are set up in high-traffic venues, often in conjunction with other events that include family entertainment. The event size and layout brings a warm and lively atmosphere to the market.

Fairview Town Center hosted its first Children’s Entrepreneur Market in November 2024, and the allotted 50 booth spaces sold out within days. Families from across the region participated, some traveling up to 50 miles to set up their miniature storefronts in Fairview. Some displays were grand, while others capitalized on the charm of the proprietors.

The young vendors sold everything from homebaked goodies to hand-poured candles and soaps. Some creative thinkers set up pay-to-play games with prizes. At least one offered face painting.

Imagination is encouraged at the markets, but there are some restrictions on the types of products kids can sell. Raw food and multilevel marketing are both prohibited, and children are not allowed to peddle goods on behalf of adults, although parents are always present.

The next Fairview market is scheduled to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Booth sales opened March 1. Much like the 2024 market, booths will be arranged within and surrounding The Park at Fairview Town Center (239 Town Place), with entertainment acts performing on the adjacent stage.

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.

EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.

This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.

CREATE SURPRISES

Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an afterschool ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.

CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS

Build weekly or monthly traditions – movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room

dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.

EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE

In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.

KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED

Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.

The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies. The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.
