hen the Bakers, Jon and Pam, were thrown a curveball in 2006, they rose to the occasion. The oldest son, Gavin (now 16), was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in March 2006, and two weeks later their son Jake (now 13) was diagnosed amniocentesis. After the initial shock of the diagnosis, the Bakers got on their fighting gloves and started raising money. From the Great Strides Walk, which the couple fundraised for just months after being diagnosed, they expanded fundraising efforts to host wine tastings, New Year’s Eve parties and black tie events. In 2009, Chris and Mary Guiney, close family friends of the Bakers, wanted to do more for the Bakers. They stepped in to amp up fundraising efforts. The Guineys didn’t ‘walk’ and hated black tie events, but they were Irish and loved to drink. They suggested a St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser for cystic fibrosis, and Shamrockin’ for a Cure kicked off its inaugural event in 2009. Over the past eight years, the event has grown drastically from 150 of the Bakers’ friends at the first event to more than 1,500 at the 2015 event. The committee has tripled, and each year hopes to throw another surprise at the crowd. The Bakers’ story has expanded beyond Atlanta with hopes to grow in cities like Chicago and Louisville. The millions of dollars raised over the years at Shamrockin’ for a Cure go directly to fund research at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Metro Atlanta is The Baker Family fortunate to have three of only 110 ac12

credited Cystic Fibrosis Centers in the United States. “Our goal for Shamrockin’ for a Cure is to create an environment where people can have fun and tell a story about hope,” says Jon Baker. “We’ve captured the hearts of doers, and every year someone new comes to make an impact on the fundraiser.” The Baker family has lived in Roswell for 13 years, with Gavin, Jake and their two other children, Sabrina (10) and Duncan (6). The ultimate goal for the Bakers is to to raise $1 million in a single evening. While a lofty goal, it is doable. “The biggest impact Shamrockin’ had on us was hope,” says Baker. “When we started our cause, we drew attention nationwide. The only way to find a cure for cystic fibrosis is through research. Research right now is winning and we have to keep fueling it with fundraisers like this one.” At the 2016 event, the party again takes place center stage at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Lara Dolan, the food and beverage chair of the event, says more than 25 restaurants including Olde Blind Dog Pub, Ceviche, Roswell Tap and Roux on Canton are expected to attend. Tickets to the event include food along with top shelf liquor and live band entertainment throughout the night. “Shamrockin for a Cure may have stemmed from the Bakers, but through that family, our eyes have been opened to other families who have been affected fighting for their own kids and the community cystic fibrosis,” says Dolan. hotographers have a unique view of the world. They see things we don’t see and gracefully capture subtle smiles, gestures and personality galore. Alpharetta Lifestyle invited Atlanta’s hottest photographers who spend their days working with children and pets, to share their favorite images and explain how they manage to tame the cranky, feisty and fun! They all agreed parents should relax and let them do what they do best. “Try to remember we are surrounded by newborns at least six to eight times a week. Just sit back relax and just enjoy this time without having to worry about your new sweet love crying,” says veteran Laura Brett of Laura Brett Photography. Another pro, Katey Penton suggests parents bring treats and toys that will help the little ones to cooperate and choose a time for your session when your child will be in a good mood. Avoid nap and meal times. “And, it can be good to choose a place where the child is comfortable and familiar,” Penton says. Similarly, when photographing pets, remember pets can pick up on stress from their owner if the owner is overly worried about the pet posing this way or that way, says

Atlanta pet photographer, Leesia Teh. She says expect to pay around $250 for a one-pet shoot, and another $500 - $2,000 on prints and products like gallery wrapped canvases or albums. Rates for photographers who work with kids start around $150 for the first hour and one child, increasing as the number of subjects and hours are added. When deciding on what the kids should wear, photographer Oana Hogrefe chimes in: "Clothing should be about comfort, and for families, a palette rather than specific colors. For instance, earth tones instead of all browns. Allow the children to be involved in choosing their clothes or at least some beloved accessories or toys!” And, if you’re planning for an outdoor session, grab a morning or late afternoon session for a beautiful glow form natural light. “We want all of our parents to sit back, relax and enjoy the session. Don't worry about if your baby will cooperate or not. We have been doing this a long time and there isn't anything we can't handle!” promises photographer Jess Kamm. Alpharetta is the New Tech Hub of the South ARTICLE NEHA NEGANDHI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

J

ust a couple of decades ago, Alpharetta’s suburban landscape was small farms and cow pastures. That bucolic image transformed faster than Optimus Prime facing Megatron when 600 tech companies set up shop here and high-speed fiber-optic cables made data lightning fast. This rapid-fire growth fueled by reliable infrastructure has earned Alpharetta – “Technology City of the South" – national acclaim. A small city of 60,000 people, Alpharetta’s thriving technology culture was nationally recognized as the best small U.S. city to start a business by NerdWallet. Seeing a need to bridge the multi-national tech conglomerates and startups, Mayor David Belle Isle started the nonprofit Alpharetta Technology Commission (ATC) in 2012. The first of its kind in Georgia, the ATC identifies and fosters key investment opportunities for technology companies and facilitates new business growth. It’s comprised of senior executives from Alpharetta’s major tech companies alongside representatives from smaller companies. “One of the drivers for ATC is branding Alpharetta as a tech destination and keeping current members engaged. Since the city contains 35 percent of all of Georgia’s technology jobs, it is extremely important ATC strategically plans to stay ahead of the curve and remain a viable leader,” says Alpharetta Economic Development Director Peter Tokar. One of the tools to do this is building an incubator, ATC’s Innovation Center. Serving as a startup consultant, the center is built specifically for tech startups with 24/7 member access to co-working space and innovative labs for experimenting. Mark Hubbard, ATC’s CEO calls the center, “The center of gravity for innovation.” Some of the primary goals are to connect technology companies to other emerging ones and build a technology job pipeline for recruiting and retaining top talent. The 8,500-square-foot Innovation Center leases lockable office suites to startups and provides event space for organizations. 24

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | December 2015

Greater Alpharetta Tech Network (GATN), a nonprofit technology association, has weekly office hours at the center. GATN fosters growth within tech companies in Alpharetta and surrounding areas. “Organizations like GATN and others like Tech Talent South and Kids4Coding are pivotal to engage training and expand into the next generation,” Hubbard says. Future programs include hosting coding classes for elementary students. “The center will provide an outlet for the second and third-generation entrepreneur,” says Tokar. Another initiative is to help mobile technology development. The 3,000-square-foot lab will be equipped with a variety of mobile devices and software that entrepreneurs can use to test out their mobile apps, software and technologies, Tokar continues. Its main objective is to jump start entrepreneurs creativity and innovation to build the next great device or app. ATC’s Innovation Center will serve as a gateway for venture capital and angel funding. Alpharetta has realized that a young entrepreneur can grow to be a massive employer. Since Alpharetta comprises 25 percent of the top technology employers in metro Atlanta, it is a natural fit to nurture the nascent talent into full-fledged executive. Though being a tech hub is easily a goal within grasp (or some argue, already attained), there’s also Alpharetta’s inviting lifestyle that make it a great place to live and work. From its proximity to good schools, world-class airport, access to top-notch universities, quality housing and an enormous green beltway, Alpharetta offers work-life balance to rival any other city in the South.

In Atlanta and throughout Georgia, Northside Hospital provides high quality health care. hether characterized as Xenoarchaeology— the study of science fiction cultures through the artifacts they leave behind—or simply an astounding fascination with memorabilia themed around “a galaxy far, far away,” Rob Maxam is an authority.. Maxam is the successful vice president of sales for Sub Zero and Wolf Luxury Appliances for the Southeast. For more than 20 years, Maxam has been equipping the homes of celebrities, athletes and the affluent with what he terms the "Ferraris of kitchen appliances.”

After hours however, Rob spends time with wife Donna and their kids Jake, Madisen and Mackenzie—and entertains his guiltless obsession collecting paraphernalia associated with the greatest science fiction series in film, Star Wars. During a tour of his “man cave” in his spacious home in Alpharetta, Rob provided humorous commentary on how his home office walls became adorned with hundreds of figures, statues, authentic helmets, posters, weapons and even clocks themed from George Lucas' ingenious cinematic creations. How Rob’s collection was launched: “It all started after a conversation I had with a friend and how we both agreed that Star Wars was the best movie ever created. The next day he gave me a box that had some brand new Star Wars figures inside. I couldn’t believe they still were making these toys even though the movie had ended a decade earlier. The next day I went to the local Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us and discovered a whole section dedicated to the movie, so I bought a couple pieces, and then the next week, and so on.” Where Rob shops: “I went online and discovered that you could go to conventions all over the country like Comic-Con, Dragon Con, International Toy and the FX [Vintage Toy] Show. These shows are where serious collectors and fans go to meet the actual actors from the original movie and trade with other collectors from around the world. This is where I found the original figures still in mint condition; a whole new world of expense was introduced into my world. I travel to these shows periodically and add all types of figures and props to my collection. I also have bought display fixtures from stores that go out of business that can house the figures in a museum-like setting.” Rob on his favorite items from his collection: “My favorite pieces are the bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back. Boba Fett is the baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy and very sought after by collectors.” Rob on how much he has invested in his collection: “I basically know how much money I have spent but for the sake of keeping my marriage intact, I have declined to tell anyone. Some people have a 401K plan, I have plastic action figures.” Rob’s favorite Star Wars episode: “My favorite episode is the original movie from 1977, A New Hope. I was 13 at the time of the original release and the first time I saw Darth Vader walk into the scene, I was hooked. My younger brother was also hooked and we bought tremendous amounts of the toy figures as kids. We look back now and cry at how many of those figures we blew up with firecrackers or shot with our BB guns. Now I spend thousands for what I used to pay a couple dollars for. 28

Maxam is dedicated to continually building on his mind-blowing Star Wars memorabilia; he couldn’t wait to show off his newest addition: A six-foot-long replica of the Millennium Falcon spaceship which takes up the majority of the room’s floor space adjacent to his home office. But there is something else that has him more eager and excited than a toddler before Christmas. “Man, I can’t wait for it,” Maxam says at the mention of the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens set to hit the screens on December 18. “No lie, I got the last set of tickets for me and my three kids before the website crashed, so we are booked for the theater. It was destiny.” Referring to the Regal Avalon 12 theaters based in the burgeoning Avalon not far from his residence, Maxam’s grueling test of patience is finally over; consistent sales of his world-class Sub-Zero & Wolf Appliances mercifully kept him busy. What Rob has planned for the future: “My future plans are to convert the rest of the basement into the ultimate Star Wars man cave. I am going to make a poker table that will have Han Solo in carbonite as the playing surface, convert the home theater area into the Death Star control room, and light all the areas with different colored light sabers. Once my wife reads this, I will be living in the basement anyways. “As for the collection, I plan to continue focusing on completing the original released figures from the first three movies and to continue purchasing artwork that can be displayed throughout the man cave.”

Parting Thoughts

Stop Wrapping, Start Remembering WORDS RHIANNON BANKES

D

ecember is a month of remembrance and celebrations, but too often it is also a month of overwhelming obligations and rampant commercialism. The combination of guilt, stress, lack of sleep, and overspending tend to turn the last month of the year into a whirlwind of overextended schedules. Don’t let negative emotions and unrealistic expectations take over this season. You won’t get a prize if you pack every spare moment with errands, shopping, and trying to make everything perfect. If anything you will run yourself down and get a cold or worse. Promise yourself that this year you will focus on your family, friends and yourself. Let go of the picture you have in your mind of the perfect holiday setting. Whether that image is of an immaculately set dinner table, your pets gazing lovingly at your Christmas tree, or your children delicately lighting the menorah, it’s rarely going to happen. What will happen is someone will spill wine on your antique tablecloth, your dog will chase your cat up the tree, and your child will try to light all the candles on the menorah the first night, not to mention their sibling’s hair. No one will remember how perfectly pressed your napkins were, but they are going to remember the touch football game everyone played in the back yard after the meal. Crank up the holiday music and make cookies. Snuggle on the couch to watch a movie marathon or football game. Make a new

34

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | December 2015

tradition, sometimes the sillier the better: Ice cream sundaes for breakfast or making a snow man with out the snow. Pick a craft to make as a family or organize a scavenger hunt. Write letters to each other and yourself. Stick a short note in your holiday decorations box listing this season’s successful and not-so-successful adventures. When you open the box next year you will remember how frustrated you were that you tried to make home made cranberry sauce when everyone just wanted the canned kind, but how much everyone loved spending a whole Saturday in their pajamas. Volunteer time to a charity or perform a community service project with your friends. Send care packages to military personnel and visit your local nursing homes. This holiday season vow to spend less afternoons fighting the holiday crowds at the mall and more time on fulfilling activities. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of down time. A nice glass of wine or cocoa by the fire, or a hot bubble bath, puts a lot in perspective at the end of a long day. Reflect on all you have achieved in 2015 and decide what your goals are for the new year. Ask yourself what has made you smile the most this year and holiday season. Focus on incorporating those things into your 2016 schedule. Don’t drain yourself this December. Fill yourself with the hope and love of the season…and maybe a few more of those cookies.
