Polo, cocktails, live music. Repeat. I
OCTOBER 2016 publisher
listen to music pretty much all day. I have bluetooth speakers in every room and earbuds in every pocket. Spotify, Pandora and iTunes provide me with a soundtrack to my life. I toggle between my own playlists and music these all-knowing virtual DJs find for me. When I sail with my dear friend Tom, he plays bluegrass which seems fitting as we leave behind land and all its trappings and find ourselves. I find myself thinking, dreaming, sharing, smiling and appreciating. Live music is even more powerful, I think. In the last 12 months, I saw Madonna, Elvis Costello, the amazing young R&B/jazz powerhouse Jerrod Lawson, Howard Jones, Indigo Girls, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and a talented bluegrass trio led by fiddler, Jeremy Kittel. Listening (and dancing) to music, as it happens is magical. When I saw the announcement for this month’s Wire & Wood Songwriters Festival lineup come across my desk from Russell Carter Artist Management, my interest piqued. Then, when our publisher Jim Newman and associate editor Darce Richardson secured our partnership with the Festival producers, I was thrilled. We’ll be up close and personal right here in downtown Alpharetta and at Avalon for two days, October 7 and 8. Join us for Kristian Bush, Emily Saliers, the one and only John Oates, Shawn Mullins and loads of newer talent who will be added to my playlist, I’m sure. The kickoff concert and some shows are free (say what?) and a festival pass is only $35 for access to five stages. Kids under 12 are free and you should bring your budding musicians. Check out our Facebook page for news and a ticket give-away and visit WireAndWoodAlpharetta.com. We’ll be chasing this event with Polo in the Pines, happening October 8 and 9 at the Atlanta Regional Polo Club, over Vinings way. The incredibly generous and organized Tina Fowler, Jennifer Bonner and their team, plus the talent at Sean O’Keefe Events have put together a menu and silent auction (luxury car experiences, private chef dinner, beach houses, private hunts) to complement two days of polo action. Find your groove this month, toast to the people who make you happiest and we’ll see you around! fter hosting an exclusive preview of their new tasting room, Independent Distilling Company—Atlanta’s first licensed distillery to launch since prohibition—Founders Michael Anderson and Tommy Williams finally had the chance to reflect and toast to reaching the next level of what they worked so hard to achieve. After the strenuous hustle, politics and perseverance, Anderson, 42, and Williams, 44, realized their dream once receiving the permit to begin producing their Hellbender Corn Whiskey in January of 2014. By July of that year, the whiskey hit shelves of bars and retailers leading to high praise, increased demand, and eventually two more additions to the family—the Independent Rum and Hellbender Bourbon. But operating, promoting and developing a successful craft distillery in Georgia is certainly no walk in the park. “Starting a distillery and trying to compete in a spirits market that is dominated by major producers is not for the faint of heart,” says Williams, who also owns Storm Guard Exterior Restoration in Alpharetta. “We make everything ourselves in house, from bringing in local grain all the way to bottling. It is a very labor, capital and time-intensive process. Then there are all of the legal and permit hurdles you have to overcome when you’re trying to do something that hasn’t been done locally in around 100 years. But it all feels worth it when you have a glass of your spirits in front of you that was a result of all that effort.” According to the American Distilling Institute, “Craft spirits are the products of an independently-owned distillery with maximum annual sales of 52,000 cases where the product is physically distilled and bottled on-site.” Independent surely fits the bill, doing all of the mashing, fermenting and bottling by hand all in house, but there is something that makes them extraordinary: They make it a priority to pay homage to the South by using ingredients primarily from the region including Georgia-grown corn from Riverview Farms in Ranger, Ga. Understandably, this motto has led to Independent’s burgeoning fan base. “The craft distilling movement has blown up across the country, but Georgia is just now starting to catch on,” explains Anderson. “But now, everywhere we go or when people visit the distillery, the reception is always fantastic. People get really excited about what we are doing, which makes all of the hard work and frustration that comes with starting a distillery worth it.” But even with the appreciation and patronage, Independent stays on task to be true to their craft, and, well, Independent. “We’re a small shop to say the least, so our growth has been mostly organic to this point,” Williams says. “Now that we are starting to release some of our aged products, we are starting to do a lot more events and getting in front of people. The city has so much going on so there are some great opportunities to do some really cool events. As far as sales, with our focus on aged spirits, we don’t expect to see a significant increase until we start releasing larger quantities of finished products. Right now our focus is on getting as many barrels filled as we can.” Discussing the future, it’s promising according to Williams, who lives in Brookhaven. “We plan to continue building awareness for our current CONTINUED >

brands and releasing additional aged products as they become available. We’re also working on several new and unique products that we hope to be able to share in the future.” Talks have also surfaced about a gin, a malt whiskey and even collaborations with local breweries. With some of Atlanta’s most renowned mixologists demanding their products, companies like The Frye Company in Ponce City Market making it a priority to feature their Bourbon at private soirees, and the steadily increasing number of imbibers lining up on Saturdays for their tastings from 2 to 5 p.m. every Saturday, the sky is the limit for Independent Distilling. Independent Distilling Company is located at 731 E College Ave, Unit D, Decatur.

Ale’s Draft Pick Terrapin Cinnamon Roll’d W-n-B Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout
BEER NAME:
BREWERY:
STYLE:
Cinnamon Roll’d W-n-B Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout Terrapin Beer Co., Athens, GA
PRICE TAG:
American Imperial Stout
WHAT’S THE FLAVOR:
Bittersweet chocolate and dark-roasted coffee with a sprinkle of cinnamon and notes of hazlenut. Nugget hops balance sweetness perfectly AROMA:
A hybrid of a groumet coffee house and a chocolatier’s kitchen at their busiest hours. WOULD TASTE BEST WITH:
Chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, strawberry cheesecake, peanut butter cookies, a warm coffee roll with icing, or a snifter and a roaring fire. OVERALL:
Extremely limited, but there are other versions of this Imperial Coffee Oatmeal Stout to try including the upcoming one fused with tart cherries. Silky smooth and thick with low carbonation, coating the tongue like a decadent liquid dessert - or breakfast should.
$11.99 for 750ml bottle ABV:
9.4%
FINAL COMMENTS:
Serving as a dedicated beer writer, consultant, judge, show host, lecturer, ans sincere advocate under the alias Ale Sharpton, picking my favorite beer can always be a challenge due to constant introductions of new additions. However, after much consideration (and tasting), Terrapin Beer Company Cinnamon Roll’d W-n-B (Wake-n-Bake) Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout out of Athens, Georgia is indeed one of my top choices. Fusing a premium blend from local Athens coffee maker Jittery Joe’s and generous douses of cinnamon, this is pure liquid decadence. Since this is a part of their Reserve Series, Terrapin often changes things up with their potent stouts, and then new one they have on deck for late 2016 is one fused with tart cherry. Look for that soon. I do hope they bring the Cinnamon version back soon, though!

Alpharetta's Best Brew BEER NAME:
BREWERY:
Hootn’ & Hollern’ Double IPA Jekyll Brewing, Alpharetta
STYLE:
Double India Pale Ale
HOPS:
Amarillo and Summit
PRICE TAG:
$9.99 for a 4 pack bottles ABV:
COLOR:
8.8%
A deep, rich chestnut brown
WHAT’S THE FLAVOR:
This DIPA is different. Instead of the popular citrus burst immediately from the sip, there is a more oaky. piney earthiness in the one, along with characteristics found in rye-infused ales and that is not a bad thing at all. In fact, it’s a refreshing approach to this style, with more controlled notes of apricot, mango and mandarin orange working with a caramel and toffee backbone. The flavors reach their peak at a cool—not cold—temperature. AROMA:
Wonderfully complex with a fusion of pine, orange and pineapple with a little alcohol heat to wake up the nose in the proper glass like a tulip or teku. WOULD TASTE BEST WITH:
Grilled, glazed chicken; gumbo; chili; Wisconsin sharp cheddar; Jamaican cuisine; fried seafood; Nashville-style hot chicken; and legitimate enchiladas. OVERALL:
Often, brewers of double India pale ales are known to not only boost the alcohol levels well over seven percent, but also make the hops considerably more aggressive in aroma and palate profiles. Jekyll did a solid job balancing the earthy bitterness with the malty base while allowing mentionable notes of mango, pineapple and even a toffee finish so that no single characteristic takes the backseat. I am looking forward to Jekyll’s consistent growth and heightened will to experiment. Things are evidently promising for this Alpharetta gem going into its third brewing year. 28

ARTICLE MICHELLE VENTULETT
K
en Small of Alpharetta discovered a way to capture his childhood memories and passion for stadiums and bring them to life in a seventh grade required wood shop class. While most of his peers constructed standard bookcases as their final project, Ken meticulously recreated the horseshoe shaped Georgia Tech football stadium in multiple layers of wood. This year, his Home Fields work is showcased alongside 85 carefully selected local and regional artists, craftsmen, gourmet food purveyors, and unique gift vendors at the sixth annual Elegant Elf Marketplace presented by the Sandy Springs Society. An avid sports fan from a young age, furthering his penchant for stadiums, Ken built a career around sports, becoming a sports writer at the Miami Herald and then marketing director for the Miami Dolphins. This job would allow him to see virtually every NFL stadium in the United States up close and in person. He found that in addition to stadiums, he was also fascinated with ballparks, especially the old ones built to fit city blocks allowing
each to take on its own unique personality. Growing up in northern Illinois, he became especially fond of Comiskey Park where he would recall special times and memories with friends and family. When he learned they were to demolish Comiskey Park, Ken knew he needed a way to keep his fond memories and favorite ballpark alive. “I grew up the biggest White Sox fan in America. When they tear down your favorite ballpark, they take a piece of your heart with it,” says Ken. “I wanted a way to recall my good times at Comiskey Park, and I wanted the Orange Bowl right alongside it.” So Ken put his vast knowledge to work creating Comiskey Park and the Orange Bowl out of wood for his own enjoyment. Before long Home Fields Inc. was born to the delight of stadium and sports fans of all ages across the country. Today the Home Fields, Inc. operation recreates over 140 historically correct professional and college football and baseball stadiums as well as basketball arena replicas from engineered wood, each personally designed by Small. The space between the front and back layers of wood creates a stunning 3-D effect and is delicately lit with LED bulbs in the base of each case. Ken is especially proud of the personal history of each stadium that he includes on the back of the stadium. “I’m a stadium fanatic. From history to design and every last detail our replicas are 100% accurate,” states Ken. Like Home Fields, all Elegant Elf Marketplace artisans are hand-selected for the “shop for a cause” fundraiser that takes place Saturday, November 5, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Sunday, November 6, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Lake Forest Elementary School, 5920 Sandy Springs Circle. There is $5 entrance fee, free entrance for children 10 and under with easy access free parking. All proceeds benefit the Sandy Springs Society’s philanthropic grants program that this year funded over 25 non-profit organizations in the community. In addition to one-of-a-kind vendors like Home Fields, adding to the experience is special entertainment and new attractions this year including student performances from local schools, authors, and a fashion show, highlighting the clothing and jewelry sold at the show. Shoppers will be able to reenergize themselves with a delicious lunch and snacks at the Polar Express Café and also purchase tickets for festive raffle packages. ALE’S DRAFT PICK
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON AKA ALE SHARPTON
A
s a dedicated beer writer, consultant, judge, show host, lecturer and sincere advocate under the alias Ale Sharpton, picking my favorite beer can always be a challenge due to constant introductions of new additions. Thanks to the craft beer boom especially throughout the last decade, bars, retailers and restaurants are beginning to truly appreciate the vast tasting profiles ales and lagers provide, directly increasing the demands of constant innovation. Well, during my years of research, it often becomes difficult to choose a favorite within this growing plethora of liquid gold. However, when I do find one that wows me, I let the world know. Enter the Creature Comforts Automatic Pale Ale direct from Athens, Georgia. The word “pale” can often be correlated to lacking color or vibrancy. Of course, the “pale ale” term is simply a beer style in relation to its light color, but everything else about this fantastic beer is the exact opposite. Making its debut in June of 2016 by perhaps the most revered brewery in Georgia since its inception two years ago, the Automatic is vibrant, refreshing, and simply a lip-smackin’ pour of excellence. Both the aroma and taste boast notes of pear, pineapple, and a tad of grassy earthiness mostly due to the ingenious utilization of Mosaic and Crystal hops. Even more impressive is its drinkability, meaning you can consume a few of these in one “session” due to its merciful 5.2 percent alcohol by volume and light body. Even Automatic’s packaging is stellar, thanks to local Athens painter Michelle Fontaine, who embraced the previous owners of the brewery’s home, a Chevrolet dealership in the 1940s followed by the iconic Snow Tire Company. Adding some pop culture feel of the mid-1900s and soft pastel colors, eyes are easily captivated to its can. And its name? Creature Comforts says, “The name ‘Automatic’ is a nod to the amazing community in which we're located—Athens, Ga. It’s a reference to the slogan of local restaurant Weaver D’s that inspired one of REM’s most prolific albums, Automatic for the People.” REM is also from Athens. It was truly difficult to follow the footsteps to its big brother, Creature Comforts’ nationally renowned flagship beer—the Tropicália India Pale Ale—but Automatic made it seem like it was, well, automatic to maintain its maker’s illustrious reputation.

Get this beer while you can since it is seasonal and only available in Georgia. It is that good. If not, the Tropicália will keep you in sippin’ bliss since it is served throughout the year. Beer: Automatic Pale Ale Brewery: Creature Comforts Alcohol By Volume: 5.2 percent Tasting Notes: Pear, pineapple, grapefruit… basically that fruit cocktail you loved in elementary school ending with a slight bitterness. Add a little pine to its fruity nose and you have the Automatic. Dennis Malcolm Byron aka Ale Sharpton is a world-renowned beer authority,
