Happy April!

APRIL 2016 publisher

We have a busy month, and know you do, too.

Where do YOU read your magazine? Tell us on Facebook

Jim Newman | JNewman@LifestylePubs.com

The warmer weather means we will be cycling, running, paddling, skating, hiking and walking more outdoors along our favorite rivers and routes. Need inspiration? Read about the Cross family of Alpharetta, where competing in triathlons is a family affair. Super mom, Sarah Cross shares her healthy recipes for a go-to to go bar. Grab one on the way to one of the gyms Alexa Lampasona reviewed. She tells us about cool programs and classes that will provide plenty of variety. No excuses now.

Lifestyle Publications is proud to be sponsoring two very important events this month. The 51st running of the Atlanta Steeplechase will benefit Bert's Big Adventure and tickets are still available for the April 23 party. Bert's Big Adventure is a nonprofit that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World® for children between the ages of 5 and 12 with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. Talk about magic! We hope to see you there and will be strolling through the party tent and around the steeplechase course looking for our favorite hat. Wear yours and we'll snap your photo for our Good Times pages! Then, on April 30, we'll gather at the Delta Flight Museum to celebrate survivors, fighters and their families at the American Cancer Society Hope Ball, honoring our friend Jeff Wigbels, who battled and beat stage four non-smokers lung cancer. You can win tickets to join us at the sponsors table by going to our website and entering, then follow the link to donate what you can to support research, education and support for people fighting cancer right here in your Atlanta community. Read about Jeff's persistence and targeted cancer treatment on page 32. Keep it fresh this month and post your fitness endeavors on our Facebook or Instagram pages!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Facelifts, But Were Afraid to Ask ARTICLE VALERIE SHEPHERD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

P

roudly, like most women in their prime {notice I didn’t list my age but it rhymes with mourtythree}, I am no longer afraid to ask for needs or wants - from directions to an extra slice of cake. However, when it comes to skin care, I find myself burying my head in the sand. I’m intimidated by what is available as well as the cost and the ever-changing technology and science behind the subject. I decided to face reality and ask some pointed questions. Quest Women’s Spa & Fitness Center in Alpharetta, Aesthetic Specialty Centre (ASC), Aesthetic & Plastic Center of Atlanta in Dunwoody and Oculus Cosmetic have come to the rescue. (You’re welcome!)

Dr. Walker and Dr. O’Neil at Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery wisely reveal, “for both day and evening (skin care), think hydration, because the skin depends on water to be present for healing and balance.” Look for humectants, “A magic bullet for the skin’s ultimate health.” Humectant acts as a skin barrier to help dry skin, acts as an exfoliant, and helps acne prone skin by fixing a broken moisturizing barrier. Kim Palmieri at ASC suggests a go-to product in the Clarisonic Ultrasonic Skin Cleansing Brush, which “gently and deeply cleanses the skin up to 6x better than manually cleansing.” Budget: $45 - $400 three to four times a year.

DAILY CREAMS AND SCRUBS

FACIALS, PEELS AND TREATMENTS

A daily face care regime should include gentle cleansing, toning, moisturizing both morning and night, and SPF. Quest’s aesthetician Vida Razmara stresses the importance of having your skin analyzed for your specific needs, “There is something for everyone’s budget, from over the counter to medical grade. Make sure you are buying the right product for your needs.” Vida recommends an exfoliant for all skin types, too. Stacie Clark at Oculus revealed that the left side of our faces are under attack more, since we spend so much time in the car. Beware and be ready with Reision Skincare Intellishade Original SPF 45 sunscreen, a tinted moisturizer with anti-aging properties.

My friends that get regular treatments and facials glow for days. Kim at ASC recommends deep cleansing facials and light chemical peels (Skin Medica’s Illuminize or Vitalize Peel) as well as their “client favorite” Hydrafacials. Treatments are helpful in maintaining the healthy integrity of the skin when performed regularly, and should be considered essential if you have skin care challenges or goals. Vida at Quest urges, “Whether the goal is pleasure or targeted results, be specific with your aesthetician.” Peels and certain treatments are best performed in the fall and winter months, when you don’t risk as much sun exposure. Our editor had a Jan Marini 40% gel glycolic peel at Oculus and the results were immediate, leaving her with a youthful glow and a surface receptive to the skin firming botanical mask form Epionce and vitamin C serum that she’ll use daily. Budget: $90 - $225 six to 12 times a year (ask for series or packages discounts)

Dr. Walker and Dr. O’Neil at Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery wisely reveal, “for both day and evening (skin care), think hydration, because the skin depends on water to be present for healing and balance.” Look for humectants, “A magic bullet for the skin’s ultimate health.”

FILLERS AND NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS

There is a vast array of fillers working miracles: Botox, Juvaderm, Voluma, Restylane and Sculptra. “We now understand facial anatomy better than ever before as well as facial aging. Back in the day the emphasis was on pulling and tightening, whereas today the focus is on augmentation and volumization,” explains the pros at Aesthetic & Plastic Center. According to Kim at ASC, “These products are

excellent ways to lift the skin and reintroduce volume and contouring where the aging process has begun showing signs.” Check out Kybella, (injections for contouring the unwanted double chin), Ultratherapy (non-surgical skin tightening and lifting), and CoolSculpting (sculpting and contouring). Quest also hails the tried and true results of laser treatments – for tightening, hair removal, lightening sun/aging spots, and reducing appearance of spider veins. Aesthetic & Plastic Center is especially excited about the speedy recovery and results from Micro Needling (skin needling), which is a minimally invasive treatment to promote skin renewal by the body forming new tissue and releasing growth factors that promote healing and scar repair. ou know that feeling after a good workout, where you feel invincible and don’t even care how much you sweat? These gyms give you those feel-good endorphins, along with top-notch classes that kick your butt, and perks like themed classes, free snacks and more. Here’s the scoop on four of Alpharetta’s favorite gyms. ELEVATE BARRE STUDIO

From Barre to Barbells Four Gyms to Try This Spring

Since its opening two years ago, Elevate has formed an intimate community at the barre studio. Regardless of fitness level, the classes deliver a unique blend of cardio, strength training, and stretching in a low-impact, high-reward workout. Perks: An on-staff physical therapist helps design the barre and TRX programs, so members can modify their workouts based on injuries. A changing room features lockers and a lighted mirror. In the studio, a spinning disco ball makes class feel more like a party. Picks: The team of instructors, known as “barre addicts” follow a class structure of warm-up, upper body work, thigh work, seat work, and abdominals, focusing on small, isometric movements to fatigue the body’s smaller muscles. The addition of TRX Suspension Training classes is ideal for low-impact strength work. Pops: Elevate Barre Studio really connects with its members: the studio hosts themed class days and special night gatherings, and beyond the barre, members get access to healthy recipes and contests to boost motivation. Owner Rene’ Serate watched friends around her battle chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes, and that motivated her to take action in her own life. She competed in Figure Competitions for several years before she was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, but that didn’t stop her from carrying out her goals to teach fitness to others at U First Fitness. Picks: The personal trainers at U First Fitness are hand-picked by Serate and all hold national certifications. Classes range from lower and upper body-specific workouts to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), and total body workouts. Members train in small group sessions and focus on innovative, high intensity workouts with metabolic conditioning such as combo movements. Pops: The “Fit Beyond 50” program was developed by Serate herself to train those members that are 50 years or older. Through a structured exercise regime, the program has helped its members reverse chronic pain, renew energy, and shed pounds. Much like U First Fitness’ other classes, the small-group format encourages and motivates members with personal attention and goal-setting. All of these obstacles are utilized in the Obstacle Fit class. The Obstacle Fit class incorporates body weight into obstacle course challenges similar to Tough Mudder or Spartan races. The Realistic Self Defense program is useful to males and females, as it combines the skills of military tactics with martial arts. Members will learn to defend themselves verbally, through hand gestures and body language, and using both conventional and urban weapons. arah and Eric Cross and their seven children rarely sit still, unless it’s to sit down for dinner together, fueling up on Sarah’s healthy cooking for the next race, practice or athletic event. Eric, has been competing in triathlons for more than 25 years having completed his first one in college as a Greek week event. He regularly lands on the podium locally and nationally, and twice competed in the Race Across America as a member of an 8-man cycling 26

team and was a member of the record setting team. Now, he is a volunteer coach for Multisport Explosion, working with the youth triathlon team. Following in their dad's footsteps, five of the seven kids love triathlons, swimming and cross country. “The two youngest join me in cheering,” says Sarah. Not that she is always on the sideline. Sarah played soccer through high school and rowed on the crew team for three years in college. Their daughter, 17, danced for 12 years before hanging up her pointe shoes and putting on cycling shoes and started competing in triathlons too. Their older son, 15, swims competitively with Dynamo and is on the Southeast Junior High Performance tri team. The younger boys play lacrosse, run cross country with Alpha Crush, are on the neighborhood swim team, Go Windward Waves!, and are on the Multisport Explosion youth tri team. Eric and the four older boys are all active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts too. Sarah owns her own business, handles home schooling and is the mastermind behind the family’s practice schedules. Still, she makes cooking a priority. “I love to cook and make sure my family has good, tasty and healthy meals and snacks," says Sarah. "Having the right snack before a workout and proper re-fueling after a workout is a key to a healthy active lifestyle."

AUSTIN MUELLER, YOU’RE HIRED ALPHARETTA MAN WINS ULTIMATE JOB INTERVIEW CONTEST ARTICLE EVAN SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

lpharetta native Austin Mueller knew from a young age that he wanted to be an entrepreneur. He started small — walking his neighbors’ dogs, pruning bushes in his neighborhood and babysitting. After saving every penny earned from these odd jobs, Austin was able to purchase a lawn mower and started his first company when he was 12. Austin’s Lawns won the Chamber of Commerce’s Entrepreneur of Georgia award in 2011 and and was sold to an interested party in 2013. Austin’s desire to lead followed him to Milton High School, where he was captain of the hockey team and participated in DECA, a club that encourages the development of entrepreneurship and leadership skills. During his time in high school, Austin enjoyed hanging out with friends at Taco Mac and Willis Park.

Carolyn Distel and her son, Austin Mueller

After graduating from Milton, he headed to college at the University of Alabama. He spent one year there before deciding to take advantage of Georgia’s HOPE scholarship and transferred to the University of Georgia. He is currently a senior with a major in marketing with an emphasis in digital sales. While at UGA, he started his latest company, Bravado Branding. As CEO and Creative Director, Austin helps companies build brands through services including logo creation, website design, photography and videography. In his role, he heads Bravado’s social campaigns, lead generation, client relations, team management and marketing strategy. Austin’s plans to return to Atlanta after graduation led him to enter ChooseATL’s Ultimate Job Interview Contest. In October 2015 he submitted a 90-second video about why he thinks Atlanta is a place that he can make his mark. To move forward, he leveraged his personal network and social savvy to earn enough online votes to become one of 10 semi-finalists. At the next step, Austin wowed a panel of judges as he performed a five-minute virtual pitch session through PGI’s iMeet platform. His story resonated with the judges and earned him one of three spots as a finalist in the contest. As a finalist, Austin was treated to an all expenses paid experience in the city, which

included a stay at the W, a helicopter ride over Atlanta and dinner and networking with local business influencers. Austin presented before a live audience and panel of judges from PGI, General Assembly, Spanx, Cardlytics and The Home Depot for a possible future job at one of these companies and a $10,000 cash prize. As part of his pitch, he shared how much his mother, Carolyn Distel, has impacted his life and ambition. She was younger than Austin is currently when she became a mother, and worked multiple jobs throughout his childhood to provide for them. Carolyn completed massage therapy school and has been successfully in business for 15 years. Austin expressed how much she has influenced him to always keep going and build something for himself. A combination of Austin’s past success, excitement for the future and clear entrepreneurial spirit led the judges to crown him winner of the first annual Ultimate Job Interview Contest. He was awarded $10,000 which he will use to fully pay off his student loans and graduate from college debt free this year. Austin currently visits Alpharetta at least once a month to see his family. While in town, he loves visiting the Avalon — particularly Pizza Antico and Kona. He ultimately hopes to start a few small businesses in the Atlanta area and help others do the same by creating an alternative post secondary education option for entrepreneurs.

Giving Back Jack, Tiffany, Ava and Jeff Wigbels

Tenacity and Resourcefulness Make Hope Award Winner ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY LEE

J

eff Wigbels is a long time surfer, triathlete, marathon runner, golfer and skier. He never played football. Yet when he refers to one of the most important persons in his life, he calls Dr. Roy S. Herbst, his “quarterback.” It was this energetic quarterback who led the powerful offense on Jeff’s battle against stage four non-smoker lung cancer, making accurate and aggressive calls and staying mobile with his thinking to meet the fierce cancer’s every malignant maneuver. Nine years ago, while he and his wife Tiffany welcomed their second child, another doctor told Jeff he had a lung tumor the size of a baseball. He had never smoked. He faced death twice, but never lost sight of the goal, charging toward good health with intense optimism, vehement strength and ardent support from friends, colleagues and family. Dr. Herbst and the team called in pharmaceutical powerhouse players and thanks to the success of a trial drug (now FDA approved), and targeted therapies, Jeff has been cancer free since. He and Tiffany and their kids, Jack and Ava, live in Buckhead and he is senior vice president at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 2016 Hope Award at the annual Hope Ball later this month. “When thinking of who our honoree would be for the 2016 Hope Ball, we wanted to connect the mission of the American Cancer Society, the passion found within those that want to make a difference in the fight, and a story that inspires and brings hope to the future. Let's just say we hit the lottery when we asked Jeff and his family if they would allow us to honor him with this award.” says Shari Henning, executive vice president and south Atlantic division operating officer for the ACS. His story is miraculous, but the wonder and work continue. 32

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | April 2016

The power of Jeff’s determination and close network of influential doctors and important researchers he met during his treatment and recovery has empowered him to help hundreds of other cancer patients - friends, friends of friends, colleagues, cousins of colleagues and more. “I can talk to them about the process, about going to places like Yale, Mass General, MD Anderson and others, what questions to ask to find out exactly what sort of cancer they have and how to attack it,” says Jeff. Together with the world’s top lung cancer researchers, hospitals, clinics and physicians, as a patient advocate Jeff is pushing trials and education for targeted therapy as an option to standard care. This is individualized and aggressive care to fight cancer. “We’re one of more than a dozen Dream Teams launched by Stand Up 2 Cancer and The American Cancer Society and funded by individuals or collaboration, innovation, acceleration, targeted therapy, and translational research,” explains Jeff. He’s passionate about this. And, about everything in his life. Always has been. He’s served on numerous boards (locally for the High Museum and Atlanta Ballet); lectured at his alma mater, Penn State University Graduate School of Business (he’s a member of the Wharton Alumni Club here); and launched foundations for veterans, athletes and lung cancer research all while managing a very successful career in Wealth Asset Management with Morgan Stanley where he’s been for 33 years. It’s for this tenacity and dedication to lung cancer research that Jeff Wigbels is being honored by the American Cancer Society. “Jeff’s dedication to both fundraising to find a cure as well as his compassion to help others who have heard those same words -- ‘You have cancer’-- fit all to perfectly into the night we have planned to celebrate and honor him, Tiffany, Ava and Jack,” says Henning.

The Land Rover LR4 HSE LUX luxuriously rugged ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he Land Rover brand has consistently been applauded for their meticulous attention to detail, practicality, and most importantly pampering their motorists regardless of the road—and off-road— conditions. The 2016 LR4 HSE LUX effortlessly maintains the company’s stellar reputation. Initially, the standard amenities of the LR4 are generous including the 3.0 liter, 34

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | April 2016

340-horsepower, supercharged V6 heart; Intelligent Stop/Start; rear view camera; front and rear parking aids; dual-zone climate control; theater-esque 825-watt Meridian audio system; stargazing-friendly extended alpine roof; and cozy Windsor leather interior comfortably seating up to seven passengers to name a few. And the true advantage of the LR4 is its ability to take on the most unfavorable driving conditions thanks to driving enhancements including independent front and rear air suspension, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Hill Descent Control, and the Terrain Response System. However, the LUX, Heavy Duty and Tow packages will further enthrall the driving experience and extend its driving capabilities. And to complement the LR4’s sexy exterior, our review model boasted the Black Design Package dressed in black 20-inch alloy wheels, a tastefully intimidating grille, side vents, mirror caps, Land Rover’s signature hood lettering, and extended roof rails which collectively made the Fuji White exterior brilliantly pop.

The standout detraction is the fuel economy, which is a combined 16 miles per gallon (15 city and 19 highway) primarily due to its weighty embellishments, but this tends to not scare away the adventurous who desire extravagance, safety, and the confidence to take on virtually any physical challenge Mother Nature presents. All in all, the prospective buyer has the convenience to customize the vehicle of their choice by selecting from the numerous packages available with a base price starting at $50,400. Regardless of the combination, the driver will be equipped to not live a little, but live a lot. BASE PRICE: $50,400 Review model with all options and fees including HSE Lux Package, the Heavy Duty Package, Sirius Radio, InControl Apps, Tow Package, and Black Design Package: $67,275 plus destination and delivery ($995w), totaling $68,270. Local's Choice

LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS’ STAFF’S

FITNESS FAVORITES What makes your workout easier and your day dreamier? Here are a few of our favorite picks to make the workout smoother and the day more fun.

1 2 3

6 // REEBOK CROSSFIT NANO 5.0

WORDS SUE G. COLLINS

These are my go-to shoes for all workouts, unless it’s strictly running (yuck). The entire midsole shape in the 5.0 has been re-engineered to fit more precisely and support your foot better during heavy lifts. They are super light and durable. Stable and fine for sprints. $109. --Sue Collins

1 // SUGAR FIG

7 // NUTRI NINJA PRO

Sugar Fig Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 moisturizes, protects and smoothes the lips while leaving a pearlescent wine tint, offering sheer coverage or buildable color. --Karyn Slovin

It’s 900 watts of pure smoothie power. This thing purees frozen fruit in a jiffy, is easy to clean, doesn’t take up a ton of space on the counter and comes with two sizes of blending cups that have travel lids. Boom! I use a cup of frozen mixed berries, a half cup of almond milk, a half cup of kefir and maybe a fresh banana. $99 or so. --Sue Collins

2 // GATORADE SQUEEZE BOTTLE These water bottles are airtight and don’t leak. I use these at hot yoga class and at the gym. Plus, they are 3 for $9.99 at Costco. --Jim Newman 3 // FOAM ROLLERS I love these and use them religiously. Roll your quads, your back or shoulders. I use it to crack my back and roll out kinks and tight spots. Keep one in your living room (roll it out during the morning news) and one in your bedroom (after a hot bath). The unique pattern on these allow the tissue to relax as you roll and promotes the flow of blood and oxygen responsible for carrying nutrients needed to repair muscle. From $39. --Sue Collins 4 // SOL DRY YOGA MAT BY GAIAM Best Mat Ever! I go to hot yoga 5x a week and I never need a towel even in my sweatiest session, and it stays as grippy as when it’s dry! Through some miraculous technology this thing never gets smelly, and with 5mm of cushioning, it’s also soft on your joints. --Darce Richardson 5 // SWANSON GREEN VIBRANT Green Vibrance nutritional shake (powder), gluten free formula with 77 certified organic and concentrated foods and extracts, soy free. I want to make sure I get all my daily nutrients and this powder mixed with a pure fruit juice and crushed ice is my joint! I use a shaker and make a virgin cocktail with it. --Dennis Malcolm Byron

8 // 10’ PHONE CHARGER CABLE 6

Go ahead, you know you need one. In the car, you can pass it to the DJ in the back seat. At home, you can actually leave the phone charging, plugged into the wall socket, while you’re “reading” in bed or working at your desk. $5, cool colors, online or at an office supply. --Valerie Shepherd

7 8

9 // JBL REFLECT MINI BT EARBUDS Music motivates me when I run but I got tired of fighting with the earbud chord and finally invested in my in my jogging joy and got this pair of bluetooth buds. It’s made getting going and staying going a lot more simple and fun. Their wireless, lightweight design is not bothersome at all, and the sound quality is decent. $99. --Kendra Mathewson

9

10 // MATEA FLAT FROM OKA-B SHOES The shoes contain up to 25% recycled material and are waterproof, washable, recyclable, and made in Georgia! The therapeutic principles of reflexology guide the footbed design of the ergonomic footbed. The enhanced massage beads, arch support and sculpted heel cup will pamper your every step. --Sue Collins 11 // LOTUS PANTS BY LUCY These are my go-to pants with a stove pipe leg and modern fit. Moisture wicking and compressive four way stretch fabric make this style irresistible. -- Karyn Slovin
