Hello, Alpharetta!
MAY 2016

ore than ever, I yearn to go places I've never been. It could be because my children are older and don't require quite the on-location mothering (two out of three have flown the coop, anyways). Or, perhaps I read too many travel magazines and have adventurous friends who post too many gorgeous adventure photos on social media. Maybe my appetite was whetted during our eight years as expats living in the Virgin Islands, UK and Hong Kong. Then, there’s the possibility that as I get older, I feel the need to see more and do more while I am still fit and able.

Putting this issue together did not help. Now, I want to visit all the places our Lifestyle Publications photographers have been recently. Check out the spread, “A Beautiful World,” where some of our talented staffers share their fave pics. And, before my next trip, I want to pack like the fabulous personal stylist to the stars, Robanne Schulman, whose company Plaid Monkey outfits men and women right here in Alpharetta as they board planes, trains or minivans. The “sensible shoes” she chose for our “Carry On” travel gear feature surprised me, but heck, I’ll give them a try if she recommends them. I’ll sure turn some heads, if not an ankle. I hope this issue inspires conversations about your next trip. Share your stories and photos with us (email me or post them on our social media). Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who make coming home after a trip so very nice.

CanCare, Because Patients Make the Best Caregivers ARTICLE LAURA MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
cancer diagnosis can be one of the most frightening things a person can ever experience. The treatment, the prognosis, the side effects – there is a plethora of new information on a daily basis, and patients can sometimes feel hopeless and alone because no one in their immediate circle has dealt with cancer before. That’s where CanCare comes in. CanCare is a support group for those individuals who are newly diagnosed with cancer. A CanCare volunteer is matched with a cancer patient based on several factors – type of cancer, treatments, age and gender. These matches then communicate and council the patient via telephone, email, text, or face to face. Reverend Neal Kuhlhorst, a longtime volunteer and instructor at CanCare, explains how CanCare is different than the usual type of support provided to cancer patients. He is associate pastor for congregational care and director of counseling at Johns Creek Presbyterian Church. “We train cancer survivors on how to provide emotional support using their own journey. They’ve survived, gone from the very frightening moment of hearing the diagnosis to beating it.”Therein lies CanCare’s unique premise. Their volunteers are exclusively cancer survivors, which gives patients the knowledge that beating the disease is possible. “Patients want to talk with people who’ve beat it before,” Kuhlhorst says. “Seeing a survivor makes them realize that they have a chance.” CanCare volunteers can be found all over the Atlanta area, from hospitals to infusion centers to radiation centers. They wear nametags, introduce themselves as survivors, and provide emotional support to whomever happens to be in treatment that day. Communication ranges from a one-time conversation to a months-long support schedule, depending on the needs and wants of the patient. CanCare has been 14

headquartered in Houston since 1990. They began providing CanCare services in the Johns Creek area in 2012. Johns Creek Presbyterian Church was the lead church in developing CanCare in our area. There are four covenant churches that partner with CanCare; Johns Creek Presbyterian Church, Johns Creek Baptist Church, Johns Creek United Methodist Church and Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. Volunteers represent 20 different local congregations. “We work to fit. CanCare is all about developing relationships,” says Kuhlhorst. “We have certain patients who look forward to treatment because of the relationship they’ve formed with their CanCare match.” CanCare works hard to ensure that every volunteer is prepared for any possible emotion and circumstance. After a potential volunteer expresses an interest, an interview is conducted to make sure they are ready to counsel and support others. Then, volunteers undergo 13 hours of training; an entire weekend is dedicated to the extensive process. Volunteers learn to really listen to the person that’s talking to them and to meet the patient on their terms. They also must be able to tell their own cancer story in order to fully understand the emotional needs of others. Both an oncologist and physician visit to discuss different points of view. Lastly, volunteers unpack their own cancer journey. CanCare’s mission is to improve the quality of life of both cancer patients and their families by providing one-to-one emotional support. From the single mom who beat breast cancer to the grandfather battling colon cancer, healing begins when some of the stress and uncertainty of the situation is alleviated; CanCare strives to provide that support to those that might not otherwise have the courage to fight or the emotional care to win the fight. elebrating Mother’s Day is extra special when there are more than one, two even three mothers in the house. Shane Co. and Alpharetta Lifestyle teamed up to honor a few Alpharetta mothers this month, with an afternoon champagne reception at Village Tavern where the ladies tried on new jewelry from Shane Co. and shared their multi-generational stories. MEET JULIE O’BRYANT
I fell in love with Shane Co. when I was in North Carolina. Their commercials were distinctive (and creative) and I enjoyed a store with a sense of loyalty to their customers, a history of integrity and a sense of humor. I moved to Alpharetta and was thrilled to find a store located nearby. When I came in, I was instantly charmed by the store, the people (hometowns on the name tags!), the cookies, the fountain and the jewelry. I found that the jewelry was wonderfully priced, in all ranges. I began to shop and dream. Then, I found them--the perfect earrings for my mama. I then returned with my girls, one at a time. They selected important birthstone rings which I presented to them on their birthdays. My favorite earrings that I wear at least three times a week, and a strand of multi colored freshwater pearl strand that is long enough to be a necklace or a bracelet or even a headband; I love them all. The girls brought their father (my husband of 24 years) to the store. He purchased a strand of pearls for me and began the girls’ pearl collection with pearl stud earrings. On a whim, I brought in my son. A teenaged boy, he was completely silent, walking in a world he’d only seen from the outside. He was intimidated, peering at the glittering cases. Then, a masculine cross and chain captured his attention. Hello, graduation gift. 16

The earrings for my mama, were loved by her and are now coming back to me, as a return gift from Mama, after her passing. I guess when a gift is chosen with love, it finds it’s way back to the sender. And someday, my own jewelry selections will find their way back to my girls who may share them with their future daughters. MEET NITA DAVIS

If nothing ever changed there would be no butterflies. We moved to the Alpharetta area in 1993 and felt like we were in the country. The changes that we have seen have been unbelievable, and we have really enjoyed experiencing the growth. We are so blessed to be close to great shopping, restaurants, the best in medical care and still have a little piece of the country. Our Family: My husband and I have been married for 40 years and have two great children. Our son is an engineer who works in Alpharetta and our daughter works as a neonatal intensive care nurse for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. My husband started a business in Norcross in 1985 which we relocated to Alpharetta in 1993. He retired at the end of 2015. The business is still going strong, and Alpharetta is the perfect home for us. MEET JOYELLEN FREEMAN
Julie O'Bryant JoyEllen Freeman and her mother
Our family story begins with Ellen Ridley Lester, also known as “Grandma Ellen.” Grandma Ellen never met her granddaughter, Ellen Freeman. She never met her great-granddaughter, JoyEllen Freeman. In fact, she only spent five short years with her youngest daughter, Ruth Ellen, before dying tragically. Although Grandma Ellen never lived to know most of her family, her spirit and legacy lives on. In the 1950s, Ruth Ellen fell in love with Algernon Lyons, and the two were married for 41 years before Algernon passed away in 1995. Ruth Ellen and Algernon relocated to Roswell, Georgia, in 1985, and Ruth Ellen stays in this same house today. Ruth Ellen’s youngest daughter, Ellen Freeman stepped out on faith in 1996 when she left corporate America to stay home with her two daughters. She and her husband moved to Alpharetta that same year and have never regretted it. For 20 years, Ellen Freeman has faithfully cared for her family, including her mother, while remaining active in her church and other organizations. As Ellen Freeman’s oldest daughter, I am determined to carry Grandma Ellen’s namesake with victory. As a black woman growing up in the early 20th century, Grandma Ellen had limited educational opportunities. She graduated from high school while pregnant, and never had the chance to attend college. However, I am an alumna of the University of Georgia and will soon receive a master’s degree from Clayton State University, accepted to a Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Through love, faith, and victory, the legacy of Grandma Ellen lives. Shane Co. and Alpharetta Lifestyle wish to thank Aimee Oczkowski, Nancy Debinder and Sarah Johnson for sharing their multi-generation stories with us, too. Happy Mother’s Day to you all! A BEAUTIFUL WORLD 18
Lifestyle Publications' photographers share their favorite travel shots
Jonathan Phillips Phantom Ship can be seen from Sun Notch in Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Crater Lake is one of my favorite places in the entire world. It's peaceful and there's plenty of great hiking trails. But the main attraction is the eerily blue water. It looks like paint has been dumped into the caldera of a volcano. Besides the paint part that's exactly what it is. There is no water that actively flows into or out of the lake, it's all rainfall and snowmelt and the lake is really deep. That all comes together to make the color of the water spectacular. Shot with a Nikon D4s.
AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | May 2016
Jonathan Phillips The milky way crosses over Death Valley National Park in California. Space has always interested me. It is awe inspiring. It is full of wonder and things I don't understand. It makes me feel small and it gives me hope. Things came together for this photo to happen. It started with a night time temperature of 105 degrees, followed by a sand storm across the valley. This photo and the others taken that evening were my first foray into capturing the milky way. I researched and planned all to make it to Death Valley on this night. A new moon in the sky and one of the darkest places in the United States, Death Valley is the perfect spot to try and capture the infinite stars in the sky above. Shot with a Nikon D4s.
Alexa Lampasona One of my favorite places in Italy is Cinque Terre. I love the different pastel and bright colors that line the shores of the island of Monterosso. It seems as if even the umbrellas and beach accessories match with the surrounding buildings. The jagged rock just seems to contrast the whole photo and ties in to Cinque Terre’s rocky cliffs.

Every summer we hole up in a cottage along the verdant shores of Lake Michigan. If I'm lucky, I find a few choice Petoskey Stones, bits of coral millions of years old. My summer girlfriends and I made these bracelets and wore them all year long to remind us of that sensational summer feeling.

he head priest walks over to the center of the main shrine room to offer the daily morning prayers. Chanting, clapping
and singing follow, along with a specific protocol of procedures for passing the blessed offerings on to other members of the party. This is the daily scene at the Shinto-Buddhist shrine resting atop a long series of stone steps on Mt. Haguro-san, where you can visit while touring the northern parts of Japan. There are many ways to explore the Land of the Rising Sun, authentic among them being a journey with Walk Japan, hiking and trekking through smaller villages and towns, indulging in the beautiful and iconic scenery of the Tohoku region, wandering along the rugged Sea of Japan coast and all the while, enjoying encounters of the friendly kind. English is not very widely spoken outside of the large cities so a tour guide is highly recommended. Much of Japan is mountainous and hilly, and most areas made accessible with an intricate web of walkways, stairs, trails and more. Coastal areas like Matsushima and the island of Sado-gashima are accessed through the waterways – jetfoil and ferry being common modes of transport. You will be inspired by some of the greatest scenery to be found in Japan including this, one of the classic Three Views of Japan; the pine-clad islands of Matsushima are a delight. The bustling port brings in visitors and tourists alike. Sado-ga-shima, on the other hand, once a place of exile for enemies of the land, today gives guests the opportunity to enjoy quiet coastal life and local delicacies as well as a chance to understand its past glory when it was a booming gold mining town. Another aspect to the tourism in these areas is the historic relevance of local sites. Hiraizumi, Japan’s latest UNESCO world heritage site, featuring the Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji temples, provides an inkling of the area’s past splendor, once considered to rival that of Kyoto. Motsu-ji has been restored to its 12th century grandeur and Chuson-ji includes the Golden Hall--one of the most elaborately decorated Buddhist structures in Japan. The gardens here are simply spectacular, and the chrysanthemum festival is a must-visit. Traditional inns, called ryokans, are a great way to experience Japanese culture. Casual robes known as yukatas are provided at most inns, especially those that offer a thermal hot spring bath or onsen, public bathhouses where the relaxing hot water baths are said to have healing powers because of their mineral-rich composition.
Although sushi, sashimi and many other Japanese dishes have become staples in America, regional Japanese cuisine is strongly influenced by seasonal ingredients including many pickled vegetables, raw and broth-cooked meats and seafood. Red bean snacks and desserts are commonly found, and are a favorite. A formal dinner spread usually consists of multiple courses, with each course offering an array of bite-sized to personal-size portions. You will love eating and walking your way through Northern Japan! Details: WalkJapan.com May 2016 | AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com

e would follow Robanne Schulman anywhere - to the beach (she'll pack sensational sunglasses), overseas (she will find us a small but mighty suitcase), on a cruise with the family (watch her chose smart but sexy shoes and a sleek travel jacket with many pockets). The personal stylist from Buckhead says, "when traveling, I always use a carry on, because overpacking is just plain dumb." That's Robanne for you. She's a straighttalking, focused, a ton of fun and just a little sassy. She suggests you pack monochromatic pieces so all of your options can be paired with each other (blacks, whites, grays adding a pop of color with a handbag or jewelry). Robanne is a little obsessed with Pack-It Compression Cubes by Eagle Creek and uses the Briggs and Riley International expandable carry on. It fits both international planes and domestic planes. We asked her to show us how to travel wisely and she shopped right here in Alpharetta for some choice pieces for a show and tell, photographed at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel Atlanta.
Robanne Schulman is a premier private wardrobe stylist who brings sophistication, style, convenience and a confident edge in fashion to her clients. She navigates the trends so her clients don’t have to. With contacts from New York to L.A. to Paris, Robanne and Plaid Monkey have built a network of personal entrée at some of the world’s finest stores – getting a fashion insider’s access to exclusive previews, one-of-a-kind pieces and priority selection. Yeah, she’s kind of a big deal. Since founding Plaid Monkey in 2000, Robanne has worked with celebrities, executives, professional athletes and busy men and women across the country who rely on her carefully-honed instinct and relentless pursuit of the right look and fit. That’s right, relentless … as in, “an army of highly trained mercenaries can not keep this woman from making you look amazing.” Where will you go from here? Make it somewhere fun and fabulous (just like Robanne). Thanks to Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Makeup by Suni Weilbacher and hair by Taylor Graham from Siggers Salon. Lily Stockton- personal assistant, Plaid Monkey Stephen "Darrell" Winn stole Robanne's heart. He's been welcoming guests to the property since 2008. Black and yellow floral lace dress from Intermix.

each vacations are wonderful childhood memories for those of us who grew up on the East Coast. However, once I experienced the Gulf paradise of Miramar Beach in South Walton, Florida, I discovered what a real beach vacation should be. The Newman-Dailey Resorts onsite concierge staff greeted me as I entered the secluded, 27-acre gulf property of Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort. Following the winding footpaths through beautifully landscaped gardens, I passed charming cottages and villas, until in front of me appeared the exquisite high-rise condo where my weekend getaway would begin. The condo had panoramic views and felt like a five-star resort, decorated in pristine white furnishings with well-appointed décor and artwork throughout. The kitchen was equipped with state-of–the-art appliances and gorgeous granite countertops. The plush master bedroom allowed me to wake up to a magnificent view from the wrap-around balcony. The Gulf front resort features a private beach access and amenities galore including three pools with hot tubs, a natural gas grill, picnic areas, a clubhouse, on-site Newman-Dailey check-in and concierge service, complementary tram service, 24-hour gated security, complementary seasonal beach service, and a Newman-Dailey gift card which can be used toward area activities and movie rentals. Hidden Dunes features six, well-manicured championship Rubico clay tennis courts. For all my fellow Atlantans and Alta players, this place is a hidden gem. Hidden Dunes Beach & Tennis Resort is ranked among the top 50 tennis resorts for the fourth consecutive year, and is also known for their fabulous tennis staff and coaches. As I stepped onto the gray-green gritty pebbles, I remembered how much I enjoy playing on soft clay courts. Greeted by the very 32

energetic Tennis Director Rene Broxson, I knew I would not only receive a great tennis workout, but have a fantastic time. Rene and her team take great pride in helping their guests put together matches and find appropriate level opponents. After tennis, I hit the beach to stretch, walking to The Beach House, a new ocean-front restaurant in the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. At the helm of the bar, I met Bar and General Manager Brandon Hall, who had a hand in planning the redesign and layout of The Beach House. They serve fresh caught fish and house crafted food. I liked the blue crab dip and crispy pita chips on the large beach front patio with a coconut mojito. Later, I drove up 30A to Seaside for an afternoon of unique boutique shopping and strolling the pastel-lined cottage streets finding dinner at The Vue on 30A, with its sleek, contemporary art decolike décor and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. Chef Giovanni Filippone, with 15+ years of culinary experience, is nationally known for his appearance on Hell’s Kitchen. We tried the Pistachio Crusted Grouper, which apparently is a dish that never leaves the menu because it is always a guest favorite. After a wonderful weekend of sun, tennis, delicious food and breathtaking views, I didn’t want to leave paradise. The hospitality of Newman-Daily Resorts and their staff made my stay so enjoyable. As one of Destin’s premier vacation rental and real estate companies, they pride themselves on having the highest level of customer service with an array of well-appointed vacation rentals ranging from spacious beach homes to gulf-front condos, villas and cottages. I am already dreaming of my next visit. HiddenDunesDestin.com DestinVacation.com
