THERE’S ONE THING WORSE THAN KNOWING YOU HAVE LUNG CANCER. NOT KNOWING.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death because often there are no symptoms until it has spread. The good news is a lung cancer screening can help detect it early when there are more treatment options. Northside Hospital Cancer Institute offers a low dose CT screening if you’re 55 – 80 years old and a current or previous smoker. It’s quick and easy and could save your life.

arbed in running shoes, fashionable jeans, and a track jacket branded with her company logo, the always industrious Laura Green—the owner of Green Basements and Remodeling—is conversing in both Spanish and English with a cleaning crew at her newly purchased home nestled in the cul-de-sac of a community in Woodstock, GA. With more than 7,000-square-feet of space to perfect for a photo shoot, Green’s meticulous attention to detail explains why she is one of the most revered entrepreneurs in the South. Born in Pensacola, FL, Green, 38, always had a passion to improve interiors of homes and businesses, and once graduating from the University of West Florida majoring in Computer Science, Atlanta-based Home Depot recruited her to join their corporate team in 1999. While thriving during her new opportunity, Green earned a masters of business degree from Georgia State, leading to her first entrepreneurial venture co-owning the Castle Painting company. Its success, her invaluable customer service, and natural eye to detail led to a General Contractor’s license and the launch of Green Basements and Remodeling. Besides her candor and vocal leadership, Green’s company’s website further demonstrates her willingness to teach consumers the newest trends in remodeling innovation. From listing the seven outstanding reasons to work with Green Basements and Remodeling including design services, a stellar reputation, and possessing two local showrooms, there is an extensive photo gallery displaying the work they are capable of, and—perhaps most impressively—numerous videos featuring Green. One of them shows her explaining their showroom’s color-coded “sticker system” on various cabinet options representing budget upgrades, if they were made in the U.S., or her logical favorite— the green sticker—meaning sustainable and recyclable. Then again, Green is no stranger to the camera; she has made several appearances on television, including HGTV’s Elbow Room, the do-it-yourself-themed Super Great Rooms, and Home Free on Fox. In fact, she seemed like a seasoned show host giving a tour of her home. 12
AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | June 2016
Green’s multi-row theater room equipped with tray tables at every reclining Palliser leather seat, a large “zero-entry” pool with waterslides, an elevator, the indoor use of a polished sliding farm door, and fully equipped workout room were very impressive, but her bathrooms might be the most noteworthy reflections of her innovation. They featured single-level floors instead of the traditional shower partitions to step over for easy wheelchair access; touch-free toilets; televisions projected through mirrors; heated floors and towel holders; a urinal to accommodate gents including her husband and five boys; and the jaw-dropping demonstration of water pouring from the ceiling to fill her master tub. Thriving with her company being a “one-stop shop,” Green has evolved with expertise in numerous fields including space utilization; making everyday appliances practical for everyone (such as a hip-level microwave); using energy-efficient lighting and heating; sustainability; soundproofing; home security activations from mobile devices; and producing optimum air quality such as her kitchen’s paint which absorbs and neutralizes pollutants with a lifespan exceeding 75 years to name a few. Ultimately, Green makes her customer the top priority. Be it be remodeling a kitchen, a bathroom, lining countertops with granite she independently resources, customizing concrete floors in garages, finishing hardwood floors, laying out decks, installing a wine cellar, or virtually any other home improvement one can demand, she will make it happen. There is nothing during her stellar career that suggests otherwise. GreenRemodeling.com

Chef makes FAMILY, Main Course Ray's Killer Creek Chef at Home ARTICLE LIA PICARD PHOTOGRAPHY NICOLE STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY

lpharetta residents know that the place to go for a classic night out is Ray’s at Killer Creek. However, what they may not know is that the chef behind the delicious offerings at the high-end restaurant is also a father. Like many chefs in the industry, Mike Fuller works grueling days with long hours that can extend into the wee hours of the morning. He wears many different hats, though, and outside of work is the father to his 15-year-old son, Michael. Growing up in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Fuller started working in restaurants in high school. He became so fond of cooking, that he pursued CONTINUED > it as a career and has been doing it for over 20 years.

Before landing in Atlanta he worked at restaurants in Charleston and Nashville and gained experience in sleek restaurants like McKendrick’s and Del Frisco’s. After serving as chef de cuisine at the other Ray’s outposts, he was promoted to executive chef at Ray’s at Killer Creek. With such long days it can be hard to find a compromise between being a chef and a dad. So how does Fuller do it? He credits the well-run business at Ray's for making the dual role of "chef dad" a bit easier. Fuller once opened a brand new restaurant that was wrought with challenges and even longer-thanusual hours. “It’s more stable being at Ray’s. It takes a long time to get a crew trained,” Fuller explains. Ray’s crew was incredibly well trained when he came on board, making it easier for him to step into his new role. Having such a great staff gives him some flexibility with his schedule he may not otherwise have, allowing for more time with his son than he had in previous roles. He takes advantage of the free time he gets, because as a chef dad, he says, “Time is the biggest challenge.” One of his priorities when he has free time is cheering Michael on at baseball games. “I spend every weekend at his baseball games.” You can also find him chaperoning one of Michael’s field trips, with recent excursions to Camp Highlands and the science museum. Having such limited time together means Fuller makes the most of the time they do spend. Activities that may be mundane for more traditional households take on more meaning for them, like watching television. “We watch the Walking Dead; it’s a big to-do for us.” So, does Michael want to be a chef like his dad when he grows up? Laughing, Fuller says, “No, he’s too smart for that.” While it may not be Michael’s career path, the two do share a mutual love of food. Michael loves to visit Fuller at work for a ribeye with macaroni and cheese. They are at a bit of an impasse when it comes to meals on Fuller’s days off, though. “I always want to try a new place, but he usually just wants a home-cooked meal.” Being a chef and a father isn’t easy. Spending so much time away from his son, though, allows Fuller to treasure the moments they are together. Striking a work life and father life balance makes him a successful chef dad. 18

ho is the modern man? He is prepared, pleasant and principled. He is compassionate yet resilient. Tech-savvy but not ignorant of the classics. I asked some friends and readers for their laundry list of what exactly makes a modern man. Here's what they said. Add yours to our Facebook page! Owns a bow tie and knows how to tie it. Owns a pair of Happy Socks. Knows how to make a pink martini. Owns a pair of slim fit pants. Works hard and finds ways to release the stress outside the home. Leaves a generous tip for his server. Tosses out his PJ pants and t-shirts when they get unsightly. Makes the bed if he's the last one up. Never says he is "babysitting" his own offspring, Can navigate any grocery store solo: from nursing pads and Anbesol to shallots and chia seeds. Can help sew on merit badges on a Scout sash. Can play poker til the wee hours and still drive a morning carpool. Can change a tire without calling AAA. Appreciates a beautiful yard and is able to plant and maintain one. Can hang his own flat screen TV on the wall. Opens the door for women. And anyone following behind him.

In July 2013, Westside Ironworks, LLC was formed to acquire the old site of Ironworks International, Inc. Principals Frank Buonanotte and Jeff Stein wield decades of commercial real

experience.
The
Westside
Ironworks redevelopment transforms the former site of Iron-Works International, Inc. into the newest collection of retailers and restaurants for this magnet neighborhood that attracts foodies, fashionistas and local residents seeking authentic shopping and dining. Until 2014, Iron-Works International operated a foundry in these buildings. Still in place are the 45-foot-high, exposed wood roofs with industrial wood and steel trusses and massive entrance doors and windows. The urbanism of Westside Atlanta (West Midtown) came about because of its accessibility to a large customer base. For Buckhead residents west of Peachtree Street, Westside Atlanta is quicker and easier to access than the Lenox Mall/Phipps Plaza. A few blocks east, I-75 expands the district’s reach to our communities north of Atlanta. Visit Tom + Chee, O-Ku, Dixon Rye, Villa Savannah, Barcelona, Toni & Guy.

orced by desperation, an ailing mother puts her sleeping baby in the river hoping the downward current will take him to a better, safer home. It was not rainy season in Swaziland – the landlocked nation in southern Africa – so rivers lay stagnant, filled with flesh-biting animals. Riddled with crab bites, Baby River (as he was later named by workers) was found lying in a river bed close to Heart of Africa’s complex called Project Canaan. Roswell-based Heart of Africa is a nonprofit that provides care and hope to the orphaned and vulnerable children of Swaziland. They partner with many organizations but one of their more generous supporters is the Rotary Club of North Fulton. “When I arrived in Swaziland, it was not feeling the heat or adjusting to seeing when electricity was not available but hearing the sweet sound of the babies and toddlers playing and singing because they were fed and being taken care of, that I remember most,” says Natalie Matthews, president-elect, Rotary Club of North Fulton. It’s estimated that more than half of the Swazi 1.25 million population (about the size of Dallas) are orphaned and vulnerable children. Heart of Africa bought Project Canaan – 2,500 acres of private land to eventually become a self-sustainable community – to house the orphans including a baby home, toddler home and young children home with schools, hospitals and farming/ dairy production. Heart of Africa, started by Ian and Janine Maxwell, is a faith-based, charitable foundation that works with local churches to care for Swaziland’s orphans (HeartOfAfrica.org). After visiting Africa and seeing the thousands of homeless children, often abandoned by teenage mothers infected with AIDS, Janine Maxwell knew she had to do more. She chose Swaziland due to its ignominious title of being the No. 1 AIDS-infected country in the world for the past 10 years. She closed the doors on her lucrative marketing agency and she and her family moved to Swaziland in 2012 to expand the orphanage for children. Heart of Africa’s Project Canaan now provides 104 orphans with shelter, food, clothing and education.
Rotary Club of North Fulton has worked with Heart of Africa on several projects. John Bach, Rotarian for 25 years and past president of Rotary Club of North Fulton, says, “The joy on the staff faces when we arrived for our first trip to Swaziland in 2010 is unforgettable.” The staff received extra help because of the Club’s gift of a new John Deere tractor to help with the project’s farmland. “We got to see the staff planting vegetables that will feed the beautiful children living and growing in Project Canaan." The Club’s return to Swaziland in 2014 made an impact on the club. "It was a humbling and eye-opening experience because you get to see how small things mean so much,” says James Marosek, president, Rotary Club of North Fulton. “Shoes and batteries are some of the biggest asks from the locals. So we opted to pack personal suitcases and take extra luggage just for new clothing, shoes and stuff that’s locally expensive.” A large grant made possible by Rotary Club of North Fulton was gifted for the construction of the Living Water Dam. “Watching the look of relief on the workers faces was remarkable because they explained that the dam, which allows water to be stored during the dry season, would allow farming to be done year-round." Four members (plus one member’s spouse) of the Rotary Club of North Fulton visited Swaziland earlier this year to commemorate the construction and installation of the Club’s current gift: a 132k liter water tank in Project Canaan. The tank will provide sustainable clean water for drinking, farm irrigation for growing food and increase dairy production. The Canaan project employs over 240 locals affecting positive economic ripples through the area. Past President of the North Fulton Club, Kristi Crockett, says, “It is heartwarming to see how Project Canaan is giving hope to Swaziland’s children. With so many orphans because of the country’s AIDS pandemic, the Rotary project grants are causing a wave of good not only for the children but also the whole community.”

ure, brunch and bow ties are grand, but this year, why not grab your favorite man and head outside? Father's Day shares the month of June with National Trails Day and the 85th anniversary of Georgia’s State Park System. Park rangers are saying “hike with us on Father's Day” as a way to honor our country’s largest public trail event. Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day is held the first Saturday of each June and highlights 200,000 miles of trails that crisscross America. Programs included ranger-led hikes, kayak tours, caving, geocaching and even the kickoff of a new dog walking club. While most are set for Saturday, June 4, a few will happen throughout the month. A partial listing of National Trails Day events is below and more can be found at GeorgiaStateParks.org. To make reservations for camping, cottages or yurts, visitors can go online or call 800.864.7275. Georgia’s state parks and historic sites are operated by the Department of Natural Resources.
