tarting school in August cheats summer.

Jim Newman | JNewman@LifestylePubs.com

Growing up in the Midwest, we started back after Labor Day, which signaled the end of fun and the beginning of something less fun. The pool club closed, white pants were packed away and stiff new school shoes came out of the box. For our kids here in Georgia, the early start means an early finish in spring (or that’s what this always-positive mom preaches to my kids). Still, it’s never a good time to abandon laid back days, late nights on the front porch or that feeling of freedom from the demands of the calendar.

In our house, we squeeze in trips to the pool after school, eat dinner on the back patio and keep our summer playlist looping in the car. It’s all about maintaining the state-ofmind. Right…? Well, if we must go back to school, let’s fill our lunch bags with healthy baked goodies from 2B Whole Gluten Free European bakery, owned by Alpharetta baker, Toula Argentis. Inspired by the dietary needs of her son, she bakes up taste-forward sweet and savories perfect for after school snacks. Check out her story on page 24. Then, get your calendar out and make your family’s annual physicals and dental appointments. Our friends at Golsen Family Dentistry offer up some helpful intel for keeping kids’ mouths healthy throughout the year in “Smile, It’s Time for School” on page 14. Sorry to talk about calendars and scheduling, but do check our calendar for fun activities to keep you smiling throughout August.

ith two months to go, the excitement for Atlanta’s premiere polo event is building, thanks to the energetic and passionate leadership of founder, Tina Fowler and her dedicated team of sponsors and supporters. Since the inaugural event in 2012, Polo in the Pines has raised nearly $250,000 with a mission to fund specific cancer research, promote awareness and family support and will again benefit CURE Childhood Cancer. The elegant Saturday all-day event features polo matches, gourmet dining, crafted Southern cocktails, a silent auction and dancing. The scene will be set by Sean O’Keefe Events, a generous supporter of Polo in the Pines since its inception. New to Polo in the Pines is the Best Bloodies and Brunch Bites, Sunday’s festival featuring more world-class polo and a buffet from Atlanta’s best chefs and bartenders. Polo in the Pines Planning co-chairs, Tina Fowler and Jennifer Bonner already have Host Teams lined up including Sharon and Collins Knight, Nikki and Joey Butler, Karol and Joe Butler, Margaret Ann and Kevin Kennedy, Liz and Terry Ryan, Angie and Steve Fowler, Jill and Dan 12

PINECREST ACADEMY Milestones: Pinecrest Academy welcomed Fr. David Steffy, LC, as new President in January 2016. The Varsity Football team won its first region championship; the 67-member Class of 2016 garnered $4,214,334 in scholarship awards and acceptances from 75 colleges and universities, and boasted 36 Zell Miller scholars and two National Merit Scholarship Finalists; the Middle School sent a student to the Oratorical World Championship and witnessed its Boys Soccer team clinch its third consecutive NAML Championship; and two Pinecrest alumni were drafted by professional sports teams. Reach Out: One of the pillars of a Pinecrest Academy education is Apostolic Formation. Apostolic Formation simply means “generosity of self to Christ” and provides students at the private PreK3-12 Catholic school in Forsyth County the opportunity to discern Christ’s call, embrace that call, and bring others to know Him as well. Beginning in PreK3, Pinecrest students participate in service projects in the local community and beyond. From making PB&J’s for the homeless, to visiting the elderly in nursing homes, to participating in missions, a typical Pinecrest student graduates as a servant leader eager to make a difference. Each senior class gets to finish their Pinecrest career by participating in a tradition begun by the first graduating Class of 2007. As with previous classes, the Class of 2017 will embark on an annual Senior Mission Trip to Nicaragua, to serve the poorest of the poor. While in Nicaragua, these missionaries host a carnival,

WESLEYAN SCHOOL Milestones: Wesleyan School created six new bus shuttles to Suwanee/Duluth, Johns Creek, Roswell, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs/ Brookhaven, and Decatur/Stone Mountain. “My sincere hope is that by offering bus service to current and prospective families we will be taking one more step to partner with parents in an effort to make life less complicated,” said Headmaster Chris Cleveland. “Wesleyan cannot solve the problem of our over-scheduled and busy culture, but we have to be the type of place that takes a stand for our families and contributes to the solution side of the issue.” Reach Out: Wesleyan’s motto – JOY: Jesus, Others, Yourself – is lived out each year through outreach both locally and around the world. It is a fundamental part of the Wesleyan School experience for all K-12 students. Starting in kindergarten, students participate in local outreach projects to serve multiple organizations including Atlanta Youth Academy, North Fulton Community Charities, Norcross Cooperative Ministry, and Good Samaritan Health Center to name a few. Older students participate in similar outreach projects along with annual mission trips. Each year nearly 200 students and staff head across the globe and work together to develop spiritual leadership, cultivate a Biblical world view, and serve communities in areas like the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Bulgaria, Atlanta, and Tennessee. Mission trips for the Wesleyan

WOODWARD ACADEMY Milestones: Woodward Academy launched an innovative and wide-ranging new Global Connections program to provide even greater global opportunities for our students. Woodward’s program is unique in that it takes a holistic approach—combining opportunities for study abroad with homestay programs for international students, sister school relationships, and language certification for students. Woodward is the first school in the nation to implement the International Certification testing program for Upper School students in five languages. During Spring Break 2016, a group of 24 Upper School students traveled to Cuba. During this historic trip, students experienced the country after more than 50 years of communism, repression, and economic isolation. Reach Out: Upper School students devote more than 5,000 hours to service projects annually. Three annual service projects including a canned food drive benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank, fundraiser for The Terranova School, our sister school in Zambia, Africa and A walk-a-thon to benefit our neighborhood Jesse Draper Boys & Girls Club. Last year Woodward alone donated 23,000 pounds of food and $19,000 to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Since 1997, the Academy also has donated $500,000 to the Jesse Draper Boys & Girls Club and in the last 10 years has raised $225,000 for Terranova.

t first glance, 2B Whole Gluten-Free European Bakery’s baked goods may look like traditional, decadent European treats. Even upon tasting them you may think so. But, there’s more than meets the eye at 2B Whole. All of the products are gluten free, and many of them don’t contain other allergens like dairy, egg and soy. The bakery even offers a paleo line for the Crossfit inclined. The woman behind the Alpharetta bakery, Toula Argentis, has been a baking enthusiast for more than 20 years but didn’t always dream of opening a bakery. So how did she get here? The driving force behind her becoming a small business owner was her two sons. Her oldest son had been diagnosed with a neurological disorder – he wasn’t eating, and he was losing weight rapidly. Fifteen years ago the gluten free scene was not what it is today. The food that was available didn’t taste very good, and it was much more expensive. So Argentis went on a mission. She decided that to get something done, she would have to do it herself. She discovered the gluten free recipes she was using just didn’t taste good, or they didn’t work, so she began tweaking them. Almost every recipe she liked had been carefully modified. But, there was a payoff. “They started eating again and I was happy,” said Argentis. Not only were the boys happy with the food she was making, but her older son started to show more focus and perform better in school. And, she didn’t have to cook two menus to include gluten free foods and traditional foods. The more she baked for the boys, the more she realized she wanted to share this passion with the world. She started with shared kitchen space in Kennesaw taking wholesale orders, and eventually evolved her business into her storefront in downtown Alpharetta. All of this, while working full time at a corporate job, until earlier this year. Now, she goes beyond gluten free breads and has expanded her line to include pastries, pizza dough and breakfast items. She also has advice to offer for parents who may be facing similar challenges. “Don’t get discouraged and don’t panic.” She recommends looking at all the available resources (including herself) and talking to holistic practitioners as well as traditional medical practitioners. Additionally, she will be doing a monthly wellness talk at Lako Family Chiropractic in Roswell as a way to offer more support. Her sons’ health was the impetus for her bakery, but they’re also her inspiration. Even still, “They’re my little taste testers.” You can find 2B Whole Gluten Free European bakery at 42 Milton Avenue, right across from the square. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday, but open 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Thursday; 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Milton First Responders Foundation Community Volunteers ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS |PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

ilton First Responders Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Georgia corporation comprised entirely of volunteer citizens. One hundred percent of the profits from fundraising events support their on-going mission: “To provide financial support for Milton first responder employees injured in the line of duty or enduring a family hardship and to purchase supplementary/non-budgeted equipment and training materials.” In order to raise funds to fulfill their mission and increase community awareness, MFRF is building a team of volunteers willing to offer their time and talents to support various activities throughout the year. This might be volunteering at an event, earning service hours for school or work, donating products/services/gifts to be used for raffles and silent auction items, etc. Volunteers are not obliged to commit to any certain number of hours and can select which activities fit their schedules and interests. MFRF also strives to connect local businesses with services that might benefit our first responders directly. A recent example is local attorney, John Hill, who stepped up in a big way by donating many hours of his time and expertise to assist Milton Firefighters and Police Officers with invaluable legal services. Hill personally drafted 39 Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Medical Directives for first responders and their spouses. This equates to $25,000 worth of work had he charged for these services. Due to the innate hazards of their professions, it is crucial that first responders have these documents in order to protect their families should the unthinkable happen. Hill stated, “It was an honor to work these local heroes.” Representatives at the Milton First Responders Foundation send their appreciation to Mr. Hill for generously offering his time and services to ensure that our first responders have these important documents in order. For more information about MFRF, to volunteer or donate time or resources, please visit their website at MiltonFirstResponders.org or on Facebook at Facebook.com/MiltonFRF

Parting Thoughts

Thank You for Making a Difference WORDS PAIGE SPOONER

S

chool is back in session this month and the moaning and groaning about not wanting summer to end has begun. I’m not ready. It’s too soon. Summer is too short. I don’t want to get up so early. The author, school-aged. I don’t want to do homework everyday. This is probably similar to what you’re hearing at your house, as well. All they want is to sleep in, hang out with friends, have sleepovers, and be spontaneous rather than returning to strict schedules. And who can blame them? That’s the fun of being a kid and the magic of summertime. But, don’t forget to share with them your story… you know, the one about that unforgettable person who made all the difference in your life- the one who gave you the confidence to come out of your shell and become the person you are now. I can vividly remember my special someone. Her name was Coach Roye. Fortunately for me, she seemed to cross my path early on and continually throughout elementary, middle and high school. She coached me in swim team, basketball, and track (along with her wonderful husband). She taught religion class, PE and science, but most importantly, she was that go-to person that I could confide in when things weren’t going so well or if I just needed someone safe to talk with. She was the one I went to to share my burdens and get clear perspective. She listened and helped and coached me in life, not just on the field, court, pool and classroom. She was that spiritual influence that kept me grounded and walking in my faith. Coach Roye instilled

34

AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com | August 2016

in me drive and passion to do my best in all that I attempted. I may not have always been the best athlete, but she made me want to work harder and never, ever give up…through injuries and obstacles. I recently saw a photo of her- still teaching, coaching and mentoring- still making a difference and impacting young lives. I thought to myself: What if our paths had never crossed? Would I have the same passion and zest for life? Would I have made different choices had she not guided me and given her time so selflessly? Without her inspiration, there is no way of telling which direction life would have taken. Maybe to a completely different place, one that didn’t include the valuable lessons she taught me…the lessons that made my world make sense. She taught me that there is great reward when you work hard for something and put all that you have into it. She taught me that nothing worthwhile is ever easy...that love sometimes hurts, but it’s always worth the risk. She taught me that friendship is the core of real joy and that keeping God at the center of our lives is essential to living well. It all comes down to the relationships we form during school, doesn’t it? So, as I hear back-to-school complaints about having to set alarms early again and watch them reluctantly drag themselves out of bed, I hope and I pray that my kids will find inspiration in an outstanding teacher, coach or mentor this year…someone they can trust that will lead them along the right path now and positively influence their future steps forever!
