Hello Alpharetta W
hether or not you’re a Falcons fan, you have to admit to being just the teensiest bit excited to see the new stadium taking shape downtown. The $1.5 billion, 2 million square foot behemoth boasts grandiose stats that make even a Saints fan swoon: Total seating capacity (football) - 71,000 Number of suites: 190 Stadium height: 30 stories (305 feet) Concessions: 673 (the Dome has 407) Bars/restaurants: 24 (4 at the Dome) Scoreboard size: 63,800 square feet - that’s the largest in the NFL! See what I mean? Whitney Williams lives in Alpharetta and has been Assistant Project Manager at Darden & Company, LLC overseeing the construction and every aspect of the new build. He shares a tour on page 28. We can’t wait! I was so impressed with Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle’s dedication to an early morning running routine. Check out his picks for the track on page 42. Hydration is something every runner AND anyone who wants to stay on top of their good health to keep in check. Dr. Jeff Greenwood explains how IV fluid therapy can help cure so many conditions and invites Alpharetta Lifestyle readers to come say hello at IV.OLOGY. Read more on page 24. It’s a month of doing and giving in the Lifestyle Publications world. We had fun planning a contest for you to win a day of pampering with hair and make-up at Van Michael Salon, dinner at Davio’s Italian Steakhouse and massages and a luxury stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with transportation for the winner plus one pal compliments of Posh Limousine. Head to our website to enter and splash out the contest on your social media for me! Have a sporty month and enjoy our September issue.

very spring for the last 14 years, the Van Michael Salon leadership team does their part to create international goodwill by sharing tricks of the trade and latest trends with stylists who come all the way from Japan to learn from these experts. Upstairs at the Aveda Institute on Peachtree earlier this summer, 40 students watched Van Michael Salon’s Director of Color Natalie Gurley demonstrate the newest color techniques (a splash of magenta, an exclamation point on a head of smooth dark hair). The students--all Van Michael partners/salon owners and their top stylists from Japan were noticeably alert, making notes, recording every word on tablets and smart phones, taking photos and straining to hear the interpreter. “You’ll never find more attentive and polite students. They want to soak up as much as they can about our tools and techniques and especially American trends,” says Van Council, one of two brothers whose names grace Van Michael salons in Atlanta, Miami and Japan. Van welcomed the guests, introducing his Atlanta directors, who served as teachers for the two-day workshop. Brother Michael Council was at the salon in Sandy Springs, where he cuts and styles some of Atlanta’s most beautiful people. Van Michael Salon has welcomed Japanese partners annually, including more than 80 one year. “They learn about how we operate the business and take some of our best practices back to Japan where we have 38 salons,” Van says. The guests spent half the first day learning the Van Michael Performance Wheel, a list of services and practices stylists use on every client at Van Michael. It’s the basic outline of the experience from beginning to end. “We then discussed each point and why they are important to the client experience,” explains Van. After that, Natalie Gurley and Jeffrey Goldenstein, Van Michael Director of Cut Education, demonstrated a few color and cutting techniques, and Johnny Plant demonstrated the Evolve volumizer hair piece. “At the end of the day, the group dines together and shops. And shops and shops,” says Jay Pollard, Director of Operations. He and and Van’s assistant and Director of Recruiting, Jamie Shetler, organize the event and keep the students corralled and entertained. “We have a blast--once the work and studying is done, of course,” says Shetler.

Whitney Williams of Alpharetta Assistant Project Manager at Darden & Company, LLC overseeing the construction of the Mercedes Benz Stadium.
ince the announcement of the construction of Mercedes Benz Stadium, Whitney Williams has been one of the project’s most ardent supporters. Williams, a native to Alpharetta and Georgia Tech graduate, is an assistant project manager at Darden & Company, LLC, overseeing the construction and every aspect of the new build. Williams has seen the entire progression of the stadium since it was only a concept. “Mercedes Benz Stadium signifies growth," Williams says. "Atlanta is such a thriving city and it’s really starting to take on its own identity and feel. The new stadium is only going to push that to new limits.” Arthur Blank recruited top leaders to bring about a world class stadium that surpasses many others. Scott Jenkins, general manager of Mercedes Benz Stadium, also oversees much of the construction. Under his supervision, a retractable roof is being installed, a roof so grand that it requires the largest crane in the world. A 58-foot-high, 360-degree, high-definition halo board complements the largest video board in the world to be centered above the arena. The stadium comes equipped with the most advanced LED lighting that will not only illuminate the interior but the exterior of the stadium so that the entire city knows when our team scores. Innovative technology will grant everyone free Wi-Fi, helping eliminate bad service. And to top it off, our stadium is one of the most eco-friendly superstructures in sports history. Rainwater collection facilities and solar panels that power electric vehicles outside the stadium will help reduce energy use by as much as 50 percent. “Mercedes Benz Stadium really makes this city an attraction,” Whitney points out. “It’s helped lock down the Final Four, the Super Bowl, and many other major sporting events. People are starting to take notice.” Concessions will be a major part of the fan experience, as a result of much surveying and research. Mike Gomes was recruited from Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts to help build the “Game-Changing Fan Experience.” As the senior vice president of the Fan Experience at AMB Sports and Entertainment Group, Mike focuses on reducing fans' wait time by increasing concession sales locations, adding self-service soda fountains, and incorporating whole dollar pricing. Whitney is eager to see how this city transforms in the next 10 to 20 years. "The city of Atlanta will be one of the best, and a large part of that will be because of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. If we want those world class events, we need a world class venue. Mercedes Benz Stadium is that.” Does Atlanta need a new stadium? Atlanta needs a quarterback that’s unafraid to step out the pocket. Atlanta needs better fourth quarters and Atlanta needs to do something about the awful traffic. But Atlanta also needs to grow and push the limits to improve, and there is no doubt Mercedes Benz Stadium will hope bring about that change. It has already begun. Falcons Season Preview
After missing the opportunity to make their second Super Bowl appearance by ten yards in 2012, the Atlanta Falcons have struggled to revisit that opportunity ever since. However, football analysts, avid loyalists, and the entire Falcons staff collectively believe the future will entail the franchise will “rise up” due to some significant player acquisitions, hopefully a stingier defense, and the motivation to enter their highly anticipated new home in 2017—the Mercedes Benz Stadium—flaunting Super Bowl rings. The Falcons have one of the most dominant receivers in NFL history in Julio Jones, and he needs to get the ball as much as possible. However, last year’s underwhelming play of field general Matt Ryan—accredited to numerous dropped passes and ultimately the void of another potent receiving threat to limit defenses from double-teaming Jones— hindered the team last year. However, this season’s additions of former Cincinnati Bengal Mohamed Sanu and rookie Tight End Austin Hooper out of Stanford aim to provide some relief for Jones. Underrated Right Tackle Ryan Schraeder, Left Tackle Jake Matthews, and the offensive line will get some welcomed help from the solid Center Alex Mack acquired from the Cleveland Browns as well; this protection will give Ryan extra time to find his targets and provide big holes for the shifty rising star, Running Back Devonta Freeman. The talented, yet slightly disappointing backup Running Back Tevin Coleman promises to have a better season holding on to the ball in 2016 also. The defense, led by ball All-Pro Cornerback Desmond Trufant, will receive much-needed reinforcements thanks to numerous enhancements during the offseason. Besides developing the existing front line who raised some eyebrows last year, rookies De’Vondre Campbell out of Minnesota and LSU’s Deion Jones should upgrade the linebacker corps. Addressing help for Trufant, Defensive Back Robert Alford should build off an impressive 2015 season, and Cornerback Jalen Collins will provide an extra boost once serving a four-game suspension for violating the League’s PED policy. ombining powerlifting, weightlifting, cardio, rowing, and numerous other hi-intensity exercises based on timed sessions, CrossFit is
a nation-wide phenomenon. CrossFit Alpharetta opened its gym (CrossFitters call it, a "box") in 2009, and eventually relocated to a 6,500 square-foot facility on North Point Parkway under new ownership during the first month of 2014. With participants ranging from recent college graduates, to stay-at-home mothers, business executives, teachers, and professional athletes, CrossFit Alpharetta's membership has steadily increased during its two-year tenure thanks to expert coaching, a state-of-the-art facility, and a shared mentality to excel. Taking a break from clanging weights, whirring rowing machines, and spirited motivation shared by classmates during a noon workout of the day—popularly termed “WOD”—Owner and Head Coach Justin Tway, 38, discusses CrossFit Alpharetta’s inception, its growing family, and its formula for success.

We welcome our community to invest and invite friends as we build this signature event together. Polo in the Pines is a grass roots event created in 2012 by founder Tina Fowler to honor her mother Sharon Knight, now a 27 year survivor of leiomyosarcoma cancer. The heart of Polo in the Pines is about sharing our personal journeys to help others. Sharon Knight said “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into something positive. It has been an opportunity for growth. Growth is not always about getting what we want, but it is about being conformed to the image of Christ in which we become the men and women we have the potential to be.”

TRY KEEPING UP WITH OUR MAYOR! ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTT AREMAN
A
lpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle is tough to keep up with on and off the track. We caught up with him at 6 a.m. on
the Independence High School track where he runs nearly every morning before the city opens for business and the sun heats up the sidewalks. A husband, father, business owner and community leader, David Belle Isle was sworn into office as Alpharetta’s mayor in 2012 and has been a champion for the city ever since helping reinvent the Downtown. Food trucks, new construction, and music-centered events have begun to transform Downtown Alpharetta. Where there was once empty storefronts, there are now nearly a dozen restaurants with new shops opening every month. Ideas and inspiration come to him when he's running and he depends on a few fitness tools to make his mornings brighter. 1. A muscle roller stick gets out the kinks, massages sore spots and is easy to carry to and from the track and even to the office. Available at the Sports Authority at Mansell Crossing and online. 2. The Garmin Forerunner GPS running watch tracks distance, time, pace and calories burned. Plus, it looks super cool. Check out the selection at Road Runner Sports in Avalon for all the toys. 3. If you've got a favorite running or fitness app, keep it handy in an adjustable armband that allows you to track and store routes and stats and (if you must) check messages. Big Peach Running Co. on Windward Pkwy has more than a few. 4. The Mayor loves his Mizuno Wave Rider 19 shoes for neutral runners who want soft yet responsive daily trainers. Cool, moisture wicking socks just just a bit of cush adds to the perfect foundation. Alpharetta Outfitters can help with the socks and rain gear and look for the shoes at REI on North Point Pkwy.

Slim down in just six months. Discover a new path to healthy living. With documented safety and effectiveness worldwide— including in Canada, Australia, and the U.K.—for more than 20 years, the ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon System is now FDA-approved and is available at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates. “We see patients every day who are struggling with their weight,” says board-certified gastroenterologist Susan Coe, MD. “They are often frustrated and demotivated from waging this off-and-on battle.”
Match of Technology and Skills The smooth balloon is placed into the stomach via an endoscopic procedure and filled with a safe saline solution. It remains in place for six months and promotes portion control, a vital key to successful weight loss, while nutritional and exercise guidance establishes a new, healthy lifestyle. Patients can lose 30 percent or more of their excess weight in those first six months, after which the balloon is drained and removed. The comprehensive program continues for another six months. Adherence to the learned eating and exercise program keeps weight off and can produce additional loss.
“The conditions we routinely diagnose and treat— including fatty liver disease, stomach acid reflux, Barret’s esophagus, diverticulitis, and colon polyps—can often be attributed to, or exacerbated by, being overweight,” says Aja McCutchen, MD, also a board-certified gastroenterologist with a keen interest in obesity control. “We had been seeking a weight loss option we could confidently recommend and deliver that respected the complexities and sensitivities of the digestive system while providing timely, impressive results. This program is designed for adults who have a BMI between 30 and 40 and who are willing to participate in a medically supervised program for one year.”
Is ORBERA™ Right For Me? This program is designed for adults who: • Have a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 • Are willing to participate in a medically supervised program for one year
“The techniques involved in placing and removing the balloon are what we use every day in our endoscopy center,” says Dr. McCutchen. “A gastroenterologist is uniquely trained and experienced in endoscopic procedures, so this is well within the scope of our practice.” In addition, Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates has a nutritionist on staff to guide each patient’s dietary plan and has partnered with a physiotherapy group to offer a customized fitness program. This aftercare program is designed to help patients adapt to new nutritional habits and assess fitness goals. “We are excited about the chance to help introduce people to a healthy lifestyle for long-term weight loss success,” says Dr. McCutchen.

RIDE A BIKE IN
A NEW WAY
I
magine riding a bike with no brakes and no gears on a track with a 36 degree banking. Sound thrilling? That's track cycling--a form of
cycling based on speed, tactics and strength, and you can learn to do it here in Atlanta at the Dick Lane Velodrome. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point is one of only 22 active velodromes in the country but ironically this is not the track that was used in the ‘96 Olympics. Cyclists have been racing at this velodrome since a group of East Point residents were inspired by a visit to the Munich Olympics in 1972 and built the track shortly after. While it does take a certain amount of bike experience to cycle on the track, the velodrome offers beginner classes for both adults and kids that provide you with the fundamentals of riding the track, safe riding techniques and toward the end of the clinic, advanced bike handling. The velodrome even provides you with the special track bike- one without brakes and gears. If you're scared to not be able to grip the brakes, take it from track manager Rob Evans. “I consider track cycling one of the safest forms of cycling, taking place on a car-free track," said Evans. "While the lack of brakes might seem daunting at first, it's usually brakes on road bicycles that cause most of the crashes. You'll use your own leg strength to slow yourself down just like you speed up." The last two beginners classes of the season are two-day weekend courses on September 17-18 and October 7 and 8. Courses are $60 and include a loaner bike. Once you complete the beginner’s class, you are ready to start riding and training or even racing on the track. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point holds races weekly from March through October, giving you plenty of time to master the track before the 2017 season. Send us photos of your adventure!
