That's my mom, Emily. MY MOM EMILY KEPT A PINK AVON LIPSTICK, CLEAR PLASTIC RAIN HAT, WHITE COMB, A&P COUPONS AND A FEW CLEAN TISSUES IN HER PURSE AT ALL TIMES. She wore an apron on Sundays when she made dinner, still dressed for church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She served on the local symphony board, wrote thank you notes and had a stunning smile. She was a Phi Beta Kappa, studying and writing poetry, moving through her days as a mother to six children with gentle thoughtfulness and intentional efficiency. When she and my dad divorced after 36 years of marriage, they both found new partners and seemed to breathe deep with relief and freedom. Mom continued to care for

In all the sweet memories of her, among my favorites are those moments when, completely out of character, she would curse. Yup, that was the best. Cursing has come a long way and back then, was kinder and more gentle. But still, when Em would drop a schnizzle* or a heck, the world came to a screeching halt. It must have been all that vocal training, but she could project, launching a dangit across the kitchen with the propulsion and volume of a hydrogen bomb. It didn’t happen that

Acclaimed Atlanta Author Makes Fiction Debut JESSICA HANDLER’S THE MAGNETIC GIRL TRANSPORTS READERS TO AN ELECTRIFYING ERA OF AMERICAN HISTORY
THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD LULU HURST SHARES A SPECIAL CONNECTION WITH HER DISABLED YOUNGER BROTHER LEO, BUT SHE HAS BIG DREAMS OF A FUTURE FAR AWAY FROM HER RURAL NORTH GEORGIA HOME—A FUTURE WHERE SHE WILL NOT BECOME HER BROTHER’S SOLE CAREGIVER. Yearning to see the world and thankful for her ability to change her family’s dire financial situation, Lulu agrees to follow her father’s plan to capitalize on America’s newfound fascination with Spiritualism, Mesmerism, Magnetism and electricity. Claiming Lulu can pass electricity through canes and throw men out of chairs with an “electrical charge,” which she came to possess from a lightning storm over their house, Lulu and her parents take “The Magnetic Girl” on 14

STEPS, AND THE COMBINED LENGTH OF ALL THE BLOOD VESSELS IN AN AVERAGE ADULT HUMAN BODY. Along those 100,000 miles of minuscule arteries, veins and capillaries, a vast array of conditions may occur that require the expertise of a vascular surgeon. The board-certified vascular surgeons at North Atlanta Vascular Center are highly trained and experienced in treating all of these conditions-- from simply eliminating unsightly varicose veins to emergency surgical intervention for a potentially fatal aortic aneurism. Since most blood vessels are significantly smaller than a human hair and require extreme attention to detail and precision to evaluate and treat, expertise matters. For nearly 15 years, the physicians and staff at North Atlanta Vascular Center have been providing area communities with the knowledge, expertise and resources needed to care for patients requiring specialized vascular care. “We are double-board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery and can evaluate and treat the full spectrum of vascular disease,” explains Thomas Matthews, M.D. “We practice in four area hospitals and clinics in North Fulton, Gwinnett and Forsyth to meet the needs of vascular patients across the North Atlanta metropolitan area. The on-site Vascular Clinic offers advanced imaging and testing equipment, allowing the physicians to diagnose problems and initiate treatment without unnecessary wait times. This is a safe, convenient and more cost efficient option than a traditional hospital setting. Quality of care and convenience are important factors to consider when choosing a physician, but as Matthews notes, comfort and compatibility with your doctor are especially important in this field. “This field is unique in that we get to see our patients long term and have an ongoing relationship. The standard of care for about 80 percent of our vascular patients is that we follow them forever.” That’s the number-one reason Matthews chose to be a vascular surgeon. “I enjoy getting to know my patients and caring for them long term,” he says. If you’d rather not get to know a vascular surgeon professionally, there are some things you can do to prevent vascular disease: manage your weight, eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise routinely, and don’t smoke. However, you can do all of these things and and still end up with vein disorders if you stand on your feet excessively and forgo compression hosiery. Matthews explains that compression hosiery supports veins and prevents them from getting stretched out. “Once they are Michelle Outlaw NP, Eric Murphy and Jennifer Rosson
stretched out, they can become leaky and cause problems. So if you are on your feet a lot, you should wear compression hosiery or socks—even when it’s hot and humid.” This is especially true for pregnant women. “During pregnancy, a woman’s
Dr. Thomas Matthews, Dr. Vivek and Dr. Mahajan
blood volume increases from 5 to 8 liters. This can put a lot of strain on blood vessels and lead to ongoing problems,” he adds. Additionally, as the baby grows, the uterus presses on and partially blocks the veins that are returning blood from your legs to the heart. And pregnancy hormones make the walls of the mother’s veins softer, which makes it difficult for them to function optimally.

Backyard Bliss CHRIS SEARS CARVES OUT A SLICE OF HEAVEN
A BACKYARD CAN BE A PLACE TO GRILL OUT AND FIGHT OFF MOSQUITOES OR IT CAN SERVE AS A VERITABLE OASIS. When it comes to creating an outdoor living experience that comfortably

there are nice higher-end elements that used to be more reserved for commercial projects that people are seeing and wanting at their own residence.” As an example of this upgrading trend, Sears describes one of his firms’ recent projects, which included a waterfall, sport court, outdoor jacuzzi, deck, and a firepit in the backyard, as well as a tennis wall on the side of the house. With such a range of options available, today’s homeowners can create customized outdoor living environments based on their individual interests, which could mean adding a bocce court, a putting green, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen or a sport court that can easily welcome a game of basketball or shuffleboard. “Basketball and multiuse sport courts have become popular,” says Sears. “They come in a multitude of colors and can be custom designed.” If these features all sound like great ideas, but you wouldn’t know where to begin, a landscape architect can help by performing a site analysis and designing a site plan that ideally suits your property and family’s wishes. Not only can the perfect design

When planning a complex outdoor environment, keeping the landscaping, hardscape and amenity projects under one umbrella can help the project go more smoothly and stay on track. But that does not mean any great landscaper is ideally suited for incorporating additional elements. While some landscapers may offer extra services, like building an outdoor pavilion or shade structure, not all are qualified to do so. Sears is a licensed landscape architect with a Georgia commercial unlimited-tier general contractor license, so he’s specially qualified to handle both the landscape and the hardscape, which he performs under A&C Development Inc., a fully licensed and insured contractor. Expertise with both aspects can also have benefits when it comes to keeping a project on track financially. “I always remind folks that the devil is in the details,” says Sears. There is a wide range to what features and materials cost. For example, a patio can run you anywhere from $4 to $24 per square foot, depending on the material chosen, the site preparation and base material, and the location, grading and accessibility issues. “We are very good at budgeting good ranges of construction costs that can be helpful in understanding how to target a desired budget or make hard choices to phase elements until later.” 770.452.1169 | SearsSmithLandscape.com

Although I am Board Certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, within that field I specialize in not only treating patients with endometriosis and pelvic pain, but am also a reproductive reconstructive surgeon. This means I am one of very few surgeons nationwide who surgically treat female patients born with an abnormal vagina, uterus, or cervix. For the patient with pelvic pain that interferes with every aspect of daily life, having that pain successfully treated changes their entire lifestyle. “For the young girl born with abnormal reproductive organs: well, imagine a uterus that could not maintain a pregnancy until it was surgically corrected. After her surgery, your patient gets pregnant and delivers her first child. Or imagine further, the young girl born without a vagina and, as her surgeon, you create one for her. Being a part of the process that changes someone’s life in that dramatic way…that is the reward.” For Dr. Roberts, it’s not just about treating patients. “It’s about training those who will treat them long after you are gone,” she says. “I want to be remembered not only for the impact that I have had on my patient’s lives, but also for the many medical students, residents and fellows that I trained during my decades-long career at an academic institutions. Like our children who use us as role models years after they have left the home, my students have the ability to do what I taught them to do, when they are ready.” Reproductive Surgical Specialists is located at 1800 Northside Forsyth Drive, Suite 380, Cumming. 2019 HYUNDAI TUCSON ULTIMATE AWD The Hyundai brand continues to thrive and impress, and their 2019 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate AWD achieves yet another feat by making family time a lot more hip thanks to this SUV’s muscle-flexing body, extensive list of safety features, and numerous high-tech amenities. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability keeps everyone connected; an upgraded 8-inch color touchscreen with navigation informs with ease; the all-wheel-drive enhancement helps make parking seen from a surround-view monitor a lot more effortless; and the 2.4-liter, four-cylinder heart gets its kick from 181 horses. “Ultimate” is the highest trim of this model, and boasts even more embellishments, including adaptive cruise control, a stargazing-friendly panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and advanced forward collision prevention. Figuring an overall comfortable ride on long trips and a tremendous bang for the buck with pricing set below 33K for the highest grade, Tucson proves to be another winner in the Hyundai portfolio. L O V E R LY G R E Y L O V E S A L P H A R E T TA SPRING IS A TIME TO REFRESH, KICK OFF THE COBWEBS AND BREATHE IN SOME FRESH AIR. In Alpharetta, there are plenty of places to enjoy the beautiful weather while sipping a latte, shopping for your spring wardrobe, or grabbing a drink with friends. We caught up with Brittany Sjogren of Loverly Grey, a popular lifestyle blogger with more than 224,000 followers on Instagram, to hear about her favorite ways to play in Alpharetta. “One of my favorite parts about living in Alpharetta is how abundant the amazing shopping is - and it is all so close together. Anyone who has spent half a second on my blog knows I love to shop, and I adore finding a good deal,” Brittany says. Alpharetta has also become a culinary hotspot, with more than 200 dining experiences ranging from Southern comfort to global gourmet with Food Truck Alley on Thursday nights featuring 6 to 8 rotating food trucks line Old Roswell Street. It all comes together for the Taste of Alpharetta on May 2, featuring 40+ participating restaurants serving samples and conducting cooking demonstrations. Her faves? “Nothing beats The Original Pancake House’s pancakes for a filling breakfast. If I’m just looking for a place to grab coffee, I’ll head to Caffe Antico at Avalon and sip my coffee while flipping through my copy of Alpharetta Lifestyle. For lunch, I love Kale Me Crazy. We have a new baby, so I can use all the energy I can get! On our (now rarer) date nights, my husband and I really enjoy Restaurant Holmes downtown." 34

We don’t treat teens like adults, because physically, they’re not where you take them matters Unlike adults, teens have growth plates where bone growth happens. So when kids or teens get a fracture, it’s important to have them treated by a pediatric specialist. Our team of orthopedic experts understands how to properly diagnose and treat growth plate injuries. Because when it comes to growing bones, where you take them matters.
