A Season of Renewal: Embracing Beauty, Design, and Fresh Beginnings

I have to say, that my team and I had a blast curating the content and aesthetic of this home issue for you. Beauty and design hold a special place in each of our hearts. From our featured interior designer, Janet Baltzersen, sharing her professional “design considerations” to embracing a “fresh start” through the essence of spring cleaning—clearing out the old to make space for the new—we hope this issue evokes a sense of beauty, hope, excitement, and rejuvenation.

When I think about my home, creating a comfortable space for my family to connect, relax, create, and entertain has always been important to me. When I design a space, my intention is to make it feel energized, inspired, and expressive. One of my favorite rooms in the house is my home office. It fully reflects who I am and what’s important to me. It holds photos of my daughters, inspiring décor, books, a beautiful rug, and, most importantly, enough seating for my family. It has quickly become the go-to spot where we gather to talk about the day’s happenings, school, work, and future to-dos. I suppose I can now consider it a multipurpose room—one that welcomes ideas, conversation, work, and creativity.

When you think about your favorite room in the house, what comes to mind and why? How does your space authentically express who you are and what matters most to you?

As we welcome spring, the weather is gradually warming up, bringing with it a renewed sense of energy. We look forward to seeing you out in the community—on walks, grabbing coffee, and attending local events. If there’s something specific you’d like to see in future issues, let us know—we’d love to hear from you!

IMPROVING LIVES ONE CURATED SPACE AT A TIME

HOME, REIMAGINED

ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BONNIE PHILLIPS
My greatest accomplishments are when clients feel an elevated life experience.

When it comes to seasonal decor, some homeowners find inspiration and ideas in short supply. They’re not alone, says interior designer Janet Baltzersen.

“I’ve noticed that clients really struggle with knowing how to pull a project together on their own,” she explains. “There are so many decisions to be made, it's expensive, and they don't want to make a mistake. A lot of work goes into making a space cohesive and well-curated.”

For Janet, however, interior design is just another day at the office. As the owner of Rusty Fig Redesign, she’s been blessed with an opportunity to help others see their homes in a whole new light.

“I feel incredibly lucky to be doing what I'm doing,” Janet shares, noting that it combines the joy she gets from helping people, a love of problem-solving, and an ability to creatively think outside the box. “I'm always seeking new opportunities, and having my own business affords me that. I meet the most interesting people, and I can't tell you what pleasure it gives me,” she says.

Janet has owned Rusty Fig Redesign for seven years, but her passion for creative thinking began long before that; her professional life began in the world of childhood education.

Then, she says, “I asked myself what I wanted to do with the second half of my life.” It was an easy decision, Janet recalls. The rest is history.

“I’ve been lucky enough to win design awards,” she says, “but my greatest accomplishments are when residential or commercial clients feel their new environment has created an elevated life experience.

“I feel successful when I've helped a new small business owner bring their vision to life. Or, designing a home for someone who has lost a spouse, gone through a divorce, or experienced a tragedy,” she says. “I'm flattered when someone chooses me to renew their home when they’re emotionally ready for a change. It's such a close journey that you take together. I thrive on new challenges and unique experiences. When I get those, it feels like a win.”

Janet is quick to express her admiration for the Hyde Park community. Not only are its distinctive shops and independent businesses key to her success, she says, but she also enjoys its top-notch restaurants and bustling coffee shops.

“Hyde Park is so unique and desirable! I respect and appreciate its elegant blend of architecture, tree-lined streets, and charming gardens. It’s an area that provides walkable convenience and beautiful parks, with fantastic small businesses sprinkled throughout.”

That kind of community, Janet adds, provides her with endless inspiration. And with that inspiration, Rusty Fig Redesign is able to improve the homes of countless other families throughout Greater Cincinnati.

"Save the anxiety and some time, and hire the right designer for you and your budget," Janet says. "My goal isn't to push (an) agenda or design style on a client, it's to create a happy place to live or work in."

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

“A lot of work goes into making a space cohesive and well-curated,” Janet explains. “Selecting appropriately scaled furniture, coordinating fabrics, proper window treatments, correctly sized rugs, decor, lighting, a room’s arrangement… I could go on and on,” she says. “Seeking professional help does save time, money, and alleviates stress.”

With that in mind, Janet is also eager to share a few key concepts of interior design that others can find helpful.

1. Don't Follow Trends. Trends can be helpful for inspiration, Janet says, but a room should still fit your lifestyle.

2. Shop at Home First. “There’s great value in using items you already have,” Janet says. “Sometimes using items from a different room in a different way can refresh a space.”

3. Update Lighting. “Dated light fixtures and ceiling fans can really bring a room down,” she points out. “Recessed lighting, as well as beautiful table and floor lamps, can create a cozy, inviting environment.”

I thrive on challenges and unique experiences. (Those) feel like a win. “ ”

4. Wallpaper Mundane Spaces. Janet suggests adding bold or interesting wallpaper in a powder room, a foyer ceiling, or a hallway. “Removable wallpaper can add some character on stair risers, old cabinet doors, and behind shelves,” she adds.

5. Declutter. “Free up your space, and free up your mind!” Janet advises. “You can't successfully transform a space with ‘stuff’ everywhere. Clutter makes you feel unsettled, and you can't allow new possibilities into your life if you’re clinging to the past.

BUILDING BETTER HOMES

THE HEART Of The Home

WHERE A TABLE BECOMES MORE THAN A PLACE TO EAT

A dining table is more than just a piece of furniture—it’s where life’s most meaningful moments unfold. In a world that moves at an unrelenting pace, the table offers a place of pause, where time slows and connections deepen. It is, in every sense, the heart of the home.

Think about the moments that define a household: the joyful celebrations— birthday cakes with flickering candles, Thanksgiving feasts stretching into the evening, spontaneous Tuesday night dinners filled with laughter. The dining table is where we toast achievements, welcome new family members, and share exciting news. It holds the weight of traditions, from game nights played with loved ones to the simple ritual of gathering for dinner at the end of a long day.

But just as it bears witness to joy, the dining table is also a space for life’s harder moments. It’s where we sit, coffee in hand, to console a friend with a heavy heart. It’s where parents have difficult but necessary conversations with their children. It’s where we process loss, disappointment, and change—sometimes in silence, sometimes through tears. The dining table is a place of unwavering support, where love isn’t always spoken but is always present.

Beyond celebrations and hardships, the table is where relationships are nurtured. It’s where children learn the art of conversation, where stories are passed down through generations, and where laughter bounces off the walls. In a world of distractions, the simple act of gathering at the table— phones down, eyes meeting—becomes an act of intention, a commitment to being present.

The beauty of a dining table isn’t in its design or material but in what happens around it. Whether it’s a grand oak table passed down through generations or a small, thrifted one with mismatched chairs, its significance is the same. It is where life happens in its most unfiltered form— where we celebrate, grieve, debate, dream, and love.

A home isn’t defined by its walls or decor but by the moments that unfold within it. And at the center of it all, anchoring us in shared experience is the dining table—the heart of the home, always waiting for the next story to be told.

candles or the warm glow of string lights, lighting sets the mood and invites guests to linger at the table.

Natural Elements: Fresh flowers or a small greenery arrangement add warmth and vibrancy, making the table feel more inviting. Seasonal blooms or even a simple sprig of rosemary tied to a napkin can elevate the space and bring a touch of nature indoors.

Something Unexpected: Have fun incorporating elements into your tablescape that you wouldn’t typically think to include. Try pairing fruits with florals for a fresh, organic touch, tying ribbon bows around candlesticks for a whimsical flair, or layering textured fabrics like linen and velvet for added depth.

“In a world that moves at an unrelenting pace, the table offers a place of pause.”

CREATING A TABLESCAPE FOR CONNECTION

A thoughtfully set table can turn even a simple weeknight dinner into a moment of joy and connection. Here are a few easy elements to include:

Soft Lighting: Candles or dimmed lights create a cozy ambiance, encouraging longer conversations and a sense of intimacy. Whether it's the flicker of tapered

Simple, Coordinated Dinnerware: Thoughtfully chosen plates, napkins, and glassware—whether matching or intentionally mixed—help set the tone for the meal. Even everyday dishes feel special when arranged with care.

A Personal Touch: Handwritten place cards or a small note with a kind word can make loved ones feel valued and appreciated. These small gestures remind guests that their presence is cherished.

The next time you set the table and prepare a meal to eat remember your table is not just a location—it’s where connection thrives. It’s where laughter lingers long after the meal has ended and where dirty dishes remind us that our lives are rich with relationships.

The Fresh Start

A GUIDE TO PEACEFUL AND INTENTIONAL SPRING CLEANING

Take a second to close your eyes and picture this: The afternoon sun streams through your windows, casting a warm glow across the room. Outside, Robins and Blue Jays sing their familiar melody, welcoming the season’s return. A gentle breeze slips through the slightly cracked window, carrying the crisp scent of early spring as your curtains sway softly. You stand in your kitchen, pouring a midday cup of coffee, feeling lighter—hopeful even—because warmer days are on their way.

There’s something about this fresh, ethereal feeling that not only melts away the last traces of winter but also sparks a quiet urge to refresh our surroundings. The cupboards that need decluttering, the baseboards that have gone untouched for months, the unworn clothes that no longer serve us—it all calls for renewal. This is the essence of spring cleaning: clearing out the old to make space for the new, both in our homes and in our minds. For some, the idea of cleaning feels anything but peaceful. The thought of tackling clutter and dust can be overwhelming, turning what should be a refreshing transition into a dreaded chore. That’s why we’ve created a simple, practical guide to help you navigate spring cleaning with ease, turning it into a rhythmic, intentional process that mirrors the calm of the season itself.

WEEK ONE: REFRESH AND DECLUTTER

• Open windows for fresh air and let the natural light in.

• Declutter surfaces—countertops, coffee tables and shelves—removing anything unnecessary.

• Go through kitchen cabinets and toss expired pantry items and mismatched containers.

• Sort through closets, donating or repurposing clothes you haven’t worn in the past year.

• Wipe down baseboards and dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and vents.

WEEK TWO: DEEP CLEAN AND REJUVENATE

• Wash windows and mirrors to welcome in the sunlight.

• Deep clean the fridge and pantry, wiping down shelves and organizing items

• Launder curtains, cushion covers and throw blankets.

• Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets for a fresh start.

• Rotate and flip mattresses; wash all bedding, including pillows.

WEEK THREE: OUTDOOR AND SEASONAL TRANSITIONS

• Sweep porches, patios and outdoor furniture, preparing for warmweather gatherings.

• Check gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage.

• Tidy up gardens and potted plants, removing dead leaves and refreshing the soil.

• Store winter coats and boots, making space for lighter spring essentials.

• Replace seasonal decor—bring in fresh flowers, soft pastels and airy textures.

WEEK FOUR: FINISHING TOUCHES AND MAINTENANCE

• Touch-up scuff marks on walls and doors.

• Stock up on cleaning supplies to maintain a fresh environment.

• Set a simple weekly cleaning routine to keep your home feeling refreshed.

• Light a scented candle or diffuse essential oils to celebrate your clean, peaceful space.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing and decluttering—it’s about creating a home that nurtures and uplifts you. By embracing this season of renewal with a gentle, intentional approach, you can welcome spring with open arms and a refreshed spirit.

Let this be the year when cleaning isn’t a chore but a ritual—a way to honor your home and the season’s promise of new beginnings.

CHANGE FOR A Greener Future

HOW

MADTREE IS BUILDING A LEGACY OF GROWTH AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

MadTree Brewing, a beloved craft brewery in Cincinnati, has always been about more than just great beer—it’s about creating lasting connections with the community and investing in a sustainable future. Through their Let’s Grow Local initiative, MadTree is addressing a critical issue in Cincinnati: the disparity in urban tree canopy coverage. Currently, 20 of the city’s 52 neighborhoods have less than 40% canopy coverage, leaving them more vulnerable to heat stress, poor air quality, and flooding. Since 2019, MadTree has been working to change that—planting and donating thousands of trees while bringing residents, volunteers, and businesses together to make Cincinnati greener.

I sat down with Rhiannon Hoeweler, MadTree’s Vice President of Experience and Impact, to learn more about the initiative and its impact.

“We wanted to show that our commitment to the community and sustainability is real, not just lip service.”

Heather: What inspired the creation of Let’s Grow Local, and why is expanding the urban tree canopy so critical for Cincinnati?

Rhiannon: We’ve been planting trees for five years now. The goal behind Let’s Grow Local was to give back through environmental sustainability, particularly in neighborhoods that need it most. MadTree’s name was inspired by trees, so planting them felt like a natural extension of who we are.

We started in 2019 with an employee outing to plant 60 trees in Mt. Storm Park. In 2020, we expanded, planting 107 trees in Ezzard Charles Park (formerly Laurel Park) and distributing 850 trees through ReLeaf, our partnership with Cincinnati Parks and the Cincinnati Parks Foundation. Since then, we’ve grown from four partners to more than 20, with over 200 volunteers helping plant trees each year.

H: How do you decide which neighborhoods to prioritize for tree planting?

R: We focus on neighborhoods with less than 40% tree canopy—areas most affected by heat and pollution. Through ReLeaf, which happens every October, we allow the first two weeks of the season for those neighborhoods to register and receive trees before opening it up to all 52 Cincinnati neighborhoods.

To celebrate ReLeaf, we host Night In The Trees at our Oakley location. It’s a huge event for us—there’s music, food, and a community celebration. The night before, we light up the trees, and the next day, they’re given to residents who have registered to plant them.

H: Can you share any personal stories or feedback from residents who’ve been impacted by the initiative?

R: One of our proudest moments was in Lower Price Hill, where we planted 75 trees. The community was deeply involved in deciding where they should go, which gave residents a real sense of ownership. One of my favorite stories is about a young boy who planted a tree alongside one of our bartenders. He now has a tree he’ll grow up with in his own neighborhood.

CONTINUED >

We also planted 150 trees in Bond Hill, where we worked with Margaux Roberts and her son, Gus. For Margaux, it wasn’t just about planting trees—it was about creating a green space where her son could grow up. Seeing the real impact of these efforts makes it clear that Let’s Grow Local is about more than just trees—it’s about community care.

H: Since starting Let’s Grow Local, what has been the most significant milestone or proudest achievement?

R: There’s so much to be proud of, but our biggest achievement has been making sure we’re focusing on the right things—giving back to something that will outlive us. We’ve built a coalition of over 20 partners who are deeply invested in this mission, and they keep coming back year after year. That’s huge.

Beyond that, it’s been rewarding to see how much the program has evolved. What started as a small initiative with 60 trees has grown into an annual movement. It’s a testament to how much people want to be part of something meaningful.

H: What are the long-term goals for the initiative in terms of tree coverage?

R: We’ve planted more than 6,000 trees in the last four and a half years, and our focus is on continuing to plant more. But we’re also adding a research component. One of our long-term goals is to develop a comprehensive climate action plan for MadTree.

To maintain our B Corp certification, we need a strategy to offset our carbon footprint. We’d love to see Cincinnati adopt a citywide carbon offset plan that could benefit businesses and communities alike.

H: Let’s Grow Local Avondale beer is such a unique way to celebrate this initiative—what inspired the idea to brew a commemorative beer?

R: Our team had been dreaming about this for a long time. This year, we finally proved we could do

it—not just as a one-time thing, but as something here to stay.

We wanted to show that our commitment to sustainability isn’t just lip service—it’s real. Our head brewer, Brittany Frey, and Taylor Dreves from our sensory team worked closely on the recipe, and it all came together in a day. We even won an award for it.

Moving forward, we want to create more beers that tie into this initiative. The possibilities are endless, and we’re excited to continue growing this connection between beer and community impact.

H: How can residents or local businesses support Let’s Grow Local?

R: We’re always looking for more people to get involved. We’ll soon be putting out a call for volunteers and sponsors to help us plant more trees and expand the program.

There are so many ways to participate, whether it’s joining us at a planting event, donating to the initiative, or simply spreading the word. We also encourage businesses to consider sponsorships— having local companies involved makes an even bigger impact.

Check out our website or LinkedIn for updates on how to contribute. And of course, we always remind our customers that when you visit MadTree or buy our beer, you’re not just enjoying a drink— you’re supporting a movement that’s making our city greener.

MadTree Brewing has proven that they’re not just brewers—they’re stewards of the future. At the heart of it all is a community-driven mission that continues to grow. Through their commitment to sustainability, urban greenery, and giving back, Let’s Grow Local is planting the seeds for a greener, healthier Cincinnati.

HOUSEPLANTSThe Perfect Roommate

AN INDOOR GARDEN SANCTUARY

There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!

By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.

Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are

many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.

Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends.  Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.

Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.

Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace?

Happy gardening!
