It is with immense pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Month as selected by the Anna Independent School District Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Janeth Ordonez.

As an 11th grader with a passion for soccer and academics, she leads a busy yet fulfilling life. Her favorite color is red, reflecting her vibrant personality and competitive spirit. She proudly supports the America soccer team and has spent nine years honing her skills on the field, primarily as a right winger or center defensive midfielder.

In school, math stands out as her favorite subject, where she enjoys the challenges and logic it provides. Her hard work has been recognized through several awards, including the 2024 UIL 2nd Team All District and the 2024

Balancing her love for sports and academics has shaped her into a determined individual, ready to take on new challenges and enjoy every moment along the way.

Congratulations to Janeth and her selection as December Outstanding Athlete of the Month!

Embracing the Spirit of Giving This Holiday Season

As the holidays approach, we find ourselves immersed in a spirit of joy, reflection, and generosity. This time of year serves as a poignant reminder of the values that unite us—family, friendship, and the profound act of giving. It is an opportunity to step back from our daily routines and embrace the warmth of togetherness.

In our latest issue, we celebrate the myriad ways in which people express their love and gratitude during the holidays. From cherished family traditions to acts of kindness that ripple through our communities, we explore how giving can transform not just the lives of those who receive, but also enrich our hearts and minds. We delve into stories of individuals and organizations making a difference, showcasing how small gestures can lead to meaningful change.

We believe that the holidays are not just a time for celebration, but also a call to action. Whether it be the 12 Days of Anna, Operation Santa, Cruisin’ with a Claus Toy Drive, or the Angel Tree, we hope these articles inspire initiatives that encourage us all to contribute, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply reaching out to someone in need. We invite you to reflect on what giving means to you and how you can create a lasting impact within your circles.

As we navigate the hustle and bustle of the season, let us remember to pause and appreciate the beauty around us. Whether you’re sharing a meal with loved ones or extending a helping hand to a stranger, each act of kindness enriches the tapestry of our communities.

We hope this issue inspires you to embrace the spirit of giving and to carry it beyond the holidays into the new year. Thank you for being part of our journey, and for allowing us to share these stories with you.

Mayor’s Minute: Spreading Holiday Cheer in Anna!

As the holiday season approaches, I’m filled with gratitude for the sense of community that makes Anna such a special place to call home. Our city has grown, but the heart of Anna remains in the connections we build with our neighbors. This December, I encourage you to embrace the season of togetherness with a lineup of events that capture the spirit of giving and joy.

Our beloved 12 Days of Anna kicks off on December 7 with Santa’s Village and the Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Municipal Complex. From that night onward, 11 more days of fun and festive activities await—from Letters to Santa to Pet Pics with the Grinch and the vibrant Christmas Market and Parade. Each event offers a chance to slow down, connect, and enjoy the simple joys of the season.

In the spirit of giving, our Anna Police Department is hosting Cruisin’ with Claus, a toy drive supporting local children. I invite you to share in the joy of helping others by donating a new, unwrapped toy before December 9. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s face light up during the holidays.

Finally, the magic of Operation Santa will bring smiles as Santa rides through our neighborhoods on a fire truck from December 16-18, thanks to our wonderful Anna Fire Department. Watching families gather to wave at Santa is truly a highlight of the season.

These events remind us of the power of community. I hope to see you and your family out there, celebrating what makes Anna so special. Let’s make this holiday season one to remember!

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board. Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

THE

TREE angel

A COMMUNITY TRADITION OF GIVING

Eighteen years ago, Tiffany Terry and her sister, Amanda Hess, were asked to “temporarily” take over the Angel Tree program in their hometown of Anna. Little did they know that this short-term commitment would evolve into a lifelong passion. Now, as they embark on their 19th year, they remain dedicated to this heartwarming initiative that brings joy to families in need during the holiday season.

Starting in October, they collaborate with school counselors to distribute applications to parents. Parents can accept or decline the program, filling out their needs and wants before sending the forms back. Each year, they typically receive around 350 angel applications, and with the community’s growth, they anticipate that the need will only increase.

What began as a simple act of service has blossomed into a beloved tradition. With the bank’s generous support in allowing them to set up the tree in the lobby of Texas Bank of Anna, countless miracles unfold each holiday season. Every year, they provide Christmas presents to families who need a little extra help, ensuring that the spirit of giving reaches those who might otherwise go without.

The Anna Police Department plays a crucial role in their efforts, assisting with deliveries, while various organizations within the school district adopt angels. Families often choose to sponsor entire families rather than buy gifts for each other, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Local businesses and churches also join in, placing angels on their trees for customers to adopt, amplifying their reach.

The outpouring of support from the community is truly inspiring. It takes a village to make this program a success, and they are grateful to be part of such a loving and generous network. Their heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has contributed; the kindness shown ensures that the spirit of Christmas lives on for those in need. They feel truly blessed to continue this cherished tradition.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
