NEW HOMES MOVE-IN READY

Malia Birdwell | Anna HS

It is with great pleasure to announce Malia Birdwell as the Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Month, as selected by the Anna Independent School District Athletic Coaching Team.

Malia is currently a junior in high school, who loves pink and has a strong loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys. In school, her favorite subject is Social Media Marketing, where she has developed a keen interest in digital communication and strategy.

Wrestling has been an integral part of Malia’s life since entering high school, but her connection to the sport runs even deeper. Growing up with a father who was a high school wrestling coach until Malia was in 8th grade, she has been around wrestling her whole life. Malia has competed in the sport since her freshman year, earning the distinction of being a two-time regional qualifier and last year’s district runner-up.

In addition to wrestling, Malia stays active in various extracurricular activities. She is a member of the honor’s choir, participates in FCA, and currently serves as the student social media representative for the Anna Coyote football team.

Outside of school, she contributes to the worship team at church, participates in her youth group, and is a part of Allie Amorette Photography’s Rep Team. In the summer, Malia volunteers at Camp Barnabas in Missouri, a camp for children with special needs.

Looking ahead, Malia aims to place at Regionals and compete at the UIL State Wrestling Tournament before graduating. She also hopes to see one of their football social media posts go viral.

Congratulations to Malia and her selection as March Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Month!

Dear Neighbors,

Great cities are built on the foundation of strong, connected neighborhoods. This year, I’m thrilled to invite you to the North Collin County Neighborhood Conference, which will be held on Saturday, March 8, at the McKinney ISD Stadium & Community Event Center. Themed “Great Leaders Make Great Cities,” the event celebrates HOA and neighborhood leaders while providing them with valuable resources to foster vibrant communities.

I’m honored to join fellow city managers from Prosper, Celina, and McKinney on the City Managers Panel. We’ll discuss the critical role neighborhood leaders play in shaping the future of our cities. From creating stronger connections between neighbors to empowering others to lead, we’ll share insights into building great neighborhoods that truly make great cities.

Other conference highlights include sessions on leveraging social media to engage with residents, led by local government communicators Frances La Rue and Meredith Haynes, and a discussion on planning for HOA expenses with David Dotson of Criterium-Dotson Engineers. Amanda Duckworth from the Community Associations Institute will speak about inspiring and empowering future leaders, and a panel of HOA leaders will wrap up the day with tips on celebrating neighborhood successes.

Attendees will also enjoy a boxed lunch provided by McKinney Reserve Study Co., opportunities to win door prizes, and networking with other leaders who share their passion for building community.

This free conference is designed to equip neighborhood leaders with tools to create a lasting impact. Register at www.McKinneyTexas.org/NorthConference.

I hope you’ll join us as we celebrate the power of outstanding leadership in our neighborhoods. Together, we can continue making North Collin County a great place to call home.

styling your BOOKCASE

A bookcase is often more than just a storage unit for books; it’s a focal point of a room that can enhance the overall decor and reflect personal style. Styling a bookcase can be a rewarding endeavor, allowing you to showcase your literary collection and curate a space that feels inviting and visually appealing. Here are some tips to help you achieve a beautifully styled bookcase.

Styling a bookcase is a creative process that combines practicality with aesthetics. By using these tips, you can transform an ordinary bookshelf into a stylish, engaging focal point that complements your home’s decor while showcasing your personality and interests.

Tips for an Organized and Aesthetic Display

diy BOOKCASE

STEP 1: Strategically Place Books on the Bookcase While Incorporating Decorative Elements

When placing books back on the shelves, think about the arrangement, vertical stacks are more traditional, horizontal stacks more modern, or both for more visual interest. Adding decorative elements such as picture frames, vases, or sculptural objects to break the monotony. Incorporating items with varying heights can create a dynamic arrangement. Use larger items like art pieces or baskets on lower shelves and smaller decorative objects higher up. Aim for a balanced look while avoiding perfect symmetry. This creates an organic flow, drawing the eye naturally across the shelf. Incorporate asymmetrical groupings for added interest, mixing textures, colors, and shapes.

STEP 2: Use Color Wisely and Add Natural Elements

Color plays a role in styling a bookcase. You can opt for a monochromatic palette for a sophisticated look or introduce pops of color for a more energetic vibe. If your books are of various colors, pick a few colorful decorative pieces that complement or contrast them effectively. Integrating plants or natural elements can breathe life into your bookcase. Small potted plants can add color and texture.

STEP

3: Create Zones and Add Personal Touches

If your bookcase has multiple shelves, consider creating zones or themes for different sections. Infuse your personality into the bookcase through memorabilia, travel souvenirs, or personal artwork. These pieces add a storytelling dimension and make the space uniquely yours.

Eggstravaganza Eggstravaganza

This is one of my constant “go to” DIY projects. It’s fast, it’s easy and it looks oh so professional. I love displaying photos, but I don’t necessarily love a lot of photo frames. These canvases create a crisp, clean look... All in about 30 minutes! Let’s get started.

DIY Photo To Canvas In A Snap

STEP 1:

First things first, grab your supplies.

• Photo on photo paper

• 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas

• Mod Podge in Matte finish

• Black spray paint in Satin finish

• Clear spray paint in Satin finish

• 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller

• Small paint tray

Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim if necessary.

STEP 2:

Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely.

STEP 3:

Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges

STEP 4:

Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely.

STEP 5:

Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas!

This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers!

CHOOSING THE PERFECT LAMP

CONSIDERING VARIOUS FACTORS, INCLUDING FUNCTION, STYLE, SIZE, AND AMBIENT LIGHTING NEEDS.

Choosing the right lamp involves balancing aesthetics with functionality. By assessing your lighting needs, style, size, and budget, you can select a lamp that enhances your space and meets your practical requirements. Take your time to explore different options in stores or online. A well-chosen lamp can illuminate your home while serving as an elegant design element.

CONSIDER THE STYLE

DETERMINE THE PURPOSE

• Task Lighting: Focused activities like reading, writing, or crafting.

• Ambient Lighting: General illumination that creates a warm and cozy atmosphere.

• Accent Lighting: Decorative purposes, highlight artwork, architectural features, or other decor.

• Modern: Clean lines, minimalist designs, and materials like metal or glass.

• Traditional: More elaborate designs often made of wood or stained glass.

• Industrial: Raw materials, exposed bulbs, and an overall unfinished look given by metals and Edison-style bulbs.

• Rustic: Warm woods, natural materials, and a cozy, homey feel often found in farmhouse styles.

• Eclectic: A mix of styles, colors, and textures that reflect personal taste and creativity.

03

Determine how you want to use the lamp

CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE SIZE IN RELATION TO LOCATION IN YOUR SPACE

• Height: For table lamps, choose a height that allows light to illuminate tasks without being in the way.

• Width: Ensure that the base of the lamp fits well on the table or surface where it will be placed without overcrowding the area.

• Scale: Consider the scale of the room.

• Table Lamps: Suitable for side tables, desks, or console tables.

• Floor Lamps: Great for corners, next to chairs, or behind sofas to provide both light and visual interest.

• Wall Sconces: Mounted on walls, great for saving space and providing focused lighting in areas like hallways or above beds.

SELECT THE RIGHT SHADE

• Material: Shades can be made from fabric (softening the light), glass (creating a more direct beam), or metal (for a more focused light).

• Color: Light-colored shades will diffuse light better and brighten a room, while darker shades will create more focused light and a cozy ambiance.

• Shape: Different shapes (drum, tapered, square) will affect how the light is distributed and can enhance the style of the lamp.

The material and color of the shade will effect the amount of illumination in your space

The Joy of Tidying

HOW TO GET STARTED AND STAY MOTIVATED

Call it spring cleaning or IG envy, but this is the time of year I want everything – and I mean EVERYTHING –organized in my kitchen and closets.   While I’m pretty good at maintaining an already-tidied space, tackling the not-so-tidy closet is where I need help.  Heather Bifulco of TidyHomes came to the rescue with some great advice on getting started.

“My biggest suggestion is that you start small,” said Heather.  “Don’t aim to tackle your pantry or closet in one organizing session.  Our clients really struggle with the edit phase of the organization, but by the end they completely loosen up and start to have fun.  For example, start under the kitchen sink.  Lots of wins to be had there!”

Great tip.  Now I had a plan of attack.

Next up?  Creating categories. Organizing a space means taking out EVERYTHING and categorizing. Once that’s done, Heather always thoroughly cleans to inspire the flow of great ideas and have a fresh slate.  Consider everything from dusting the baseboards to replacing light fixtures to adding a coat of paint to change up and freshen the new look.

rain boots,” she said, “the ask is the same.”  Deep breath.  That green hat I’ve loved forever?  Keep.  Three versions of the same jacket?  Donate.  The pile of single gloves?  Toss.  Once I got going, it became easier and faster to make those decisions.

Once you can actually see everything you’re keeping, you want what you use most often within arm’s reach. Seasonal items can go on higher or lower shelves. The sweet spot of shelving is dedicated to what I need to grab daily.  Heather found beautiful baskets and bins that make me happy just to look at them.  “Finding containers you love will provide so much motivation toward completing an organization project,” she said.

Now for the fun (and sometimes hard) part: touching every item in the category piles and asking myself whether something actually serves a purpose.   “This is the time to rid your home of things that don’t work, things you have a better version of, things you never use and things that no longer make you happy,” says Heather.  The key word here is ‘things.’  “Whether it’s an old umbrella or a new pair of

The whole goal at the end of organizing is to have no clutter.  That’s right, this isn’t an attempt to harness clutter, but to eliminate it entirely.  That being said, some of us live with little people who contribute to clutter every day.  Heather’s advice on that subject turned out to be life-changing.

She suggests creating ONE drop zone, not several.

Finally she revealed her most important tip. “There are no exceptions to this,” she admits. “Labeling is the key to maintenance and to eliminating the pain of not being able to find something.  We have so many beautiful options for labeling now that it shouldn’t even be a question.  Label.  Always label.”

Great advice from the top of my closet to the bottom. This is why I’ve already scheduled Heather to help me organize the entryway and kitchen! @tidystylehome

KEY SECRETS FOR A SPARKLING HOME

A SPRING KIND OF CLEAN

TIP #1 Freshen up the Kitchen

A fresh, clean kitchen impacts the entire home. To freshen up the sink, Kim says, “Run hot water while pouring in equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar through the disposal. Follow with a few drops of blue Dawn Dishwashing soap to cut away any grease buildup. Sharpen the disposal blades by running cooler water and ice through it. For a fresh smell, grind a few slices of lemon, lime or orange, removing any seeds first.”

To clean everything else in the kitchen, including counters and stainless-steel appliances, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of 2-3 drops of Dawn mixed with water.

TIP #2 Spruce up the Living Room

The living room also deserves special attention. Kim says, “Start by pulling furniture away from the walls, vacuuming and dusting behind it. Make sure you dust air vents as well. Then, pull all of the furniture cushions off to vacuum underneath and in crevices. It’s always good to rotate and fluff cushions too.”

To banish dust from your furniture, Kim suggests using a good microfiber cloth that is slightly damp instead of furniture polish, which can leave a build-up on furniture that actually attracts dust.

TIP #3 Brighten up Windows

Brighten up your whole home by intentionally focusing on the windows. “Homeowners often forget about the inside of the window,” says Kim. “They dust the blinds or the shutters, but when the blinds are pulled up, the windows often have dust or a film on them.” Kim suggests cleaning the inside of the windows on a cloudy day to reduce streaks. “A good glass cleaner with a microfiber cloth works really well. If you still have streaks, try using a little bit of rubbing alcohol.”

HOUSEPLANTSThe Perfect Roommate

AN INDOOR GARDEN SANCTUARY

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!

By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.

Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the

home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.

Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends.  Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you

really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.

Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.

Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge

of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace. Happy gardening!

Don’t Forget to Wear Green!

CELEBRATED ON MARCH 17TH, COMMEMORATING THE DEATH OF ST.

PATRICK

Public Holiday

St. Patrick’s Day is a blend of religious tribute and cultural celebration, embodying Irish history, community, and spirit. Celebrated through parades, music, food, or simply wearing green.

St. Patrick Tourism & Merchandising

St. Patrick’s Day has significant economic implications, boosting tourism in Irish cities and towns.  The celebrations drive an increase in the sale of themed merchandise such as clothing, decorations, and food products each year.

Wearing Green

Wearing green is a tradition associated with St. Patrick’s Day. It is said that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, who would pinch anyone they could see.

Celebrated for his mission work converting the Irish to Christianity. Credited with using the three-leafed shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)

Celebrations Around the World

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in countries with large Irish immigrant populations, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In Chicago, the Chicago River is dyed green each year to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a tradition that dates back to 1962.
