Spring is in the air!

It's a time of new beginnings, warmth, and renewal. Birds return bringing their cheerful songs, temperatures finally stretch into the warmer side a bit more often, and outdoor sports seasons like golf and baseball kick back into gear. What a great time to take a deep breath, soak in some sunshine, and move ahead into this season of new growth. It's with this kind of excitement I begin as the new publisher of Arvada Lifestyle Magazine! I want to thank Cody Sturma for his efforts in bringing this magazine to the place it is today and the impact it has on the community here. As we move forward, I'm grateful for this special community, and the opportunity to continue to invest and expand within it. On that note, our theme this month just happens to be Investment! At first we might think of Investment from a financial perspective, but there are so many more dimensions to investment where we can build and improve our lives and add value to those around us. While investing in community, relationships, and ourselves can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. We can invest in our community by supporting local businesses, schools and local organizations. On a community level, I encourage you to actively think about what aligns with your goals and interests, and double down there! For me, baseball was one of my favorite sports growing up. So naturally when my son was old enough, we started getting involved with Little League. Like so many dads before me, I started coaching and have done so for the past five years. Oh the satisfaction of seeing the kids developing their physical and emotional skills, taking instruction, and learning to work as a team! On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships with those that mean the most to us through being intentional about spending dedicated time and attention with them. Take a pause in this busy world and savor these moments with your people! It's this type of investment that can have the most meaningful impact to those closest to us. Finally, what better way to invest than in ourselves! Find ways to make yourself a priority, giving some thought to physical, emotional and wellbeing. Take actions to improve yourself everyday in one way or another. In doing so, we have the opportunity to bring our best selves as we make investments in other aspects of our lives.

Our intent here at Arvada Lifestyle is to support this journey, bringing forward additional community awareness, resources, and opportunities to our local businesses, friends and neighbors. Thank you for being a part of this vibrant community! Join us as we continue to invest our time and energy into you, the Arvada Lifestyle community.

Meet Your Arvada Lifestyle Team

RANDY GOOD AND LYNN DAVIS SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON ARVADA

Recently, Randy Good stepped into the role of Arvada Lifestyle’s Publisher and he is enjoying meeting and connecting with Arvada’s residents and local businesses. This month, we want to welcome Randy by sharing a little bit about him and hearing his vision for Arvada Lifestyle. When you see Randy around town, be sure to say hello!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I grew up in Arvada/Westminster and went to school in Arvada from kindergarten through twelfth grade, then attended the University of Colorado. I have two kids, a son who is 14 and a daughter who is 9. I’ve always loved sports, predominantly golf, baseball, and football, and have coached Little League for the last four years.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT ARVADA?

Arvada is such a great community. There is maturity to the landscape that is a nice blend of older parts and sparkling new developments. The revitalization of Olde Town is also really cool to see. Olde Town has such a fun environment, and I love the events that happen there.  Arvada is a great location with its close proximity to Denver and easy access to the foothills and all of the outdoorsy activities that Colorado is known for.

WHAT IS A FAVORITE MEMORY FROM GROWING UP IN ARVADA?

I played baseball in high school, and we had a lot of practices and games at the Lutz Sports Complex. I remember standing in the outfield, and sometimes the breeze would carry in Jolly Rancher smells- I think there used to be a factory nearby- it was like you could taste the air. I also went to fireworks displays there on July 4. That was a great place, just sitting out on the ball field, looking up at the fireworks.

WHAT LED YOU TO ARVADA LIFESTYLE?

I have a background in medical devices, but it was my entrepreneurial and creative spirit that drove me to gravitate to this opportunity. Being able to do something that gives back to the local community in a creative way really appeals to me.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR ARVADA LIFESTYLE?

When people see the magazine, I want it to be a cue back to something that adds value and gives back to the community. One avenue I’d like to pursue for doing this is providing events and bringing the community together in unique ways, like our upcoming Daddy-Daughter dance in June.

HOW DOES ARVADA LIFESTYLE INVEST IN THE COMMUNITY?

In addition to giving local businesses a forum of advertising to reach the community, our goal is to increase the amount of business that stays in Arvada and give additional opportunities for our partners to connect with the community. We do this by reinvesting in partner relationships to get them the most value and bring them the most success.

We also want to give an extra voice and bring more awareness to the nonprofit organizations in the community and help promote their causes. Additionally, as someone who has a lot of interest in public health, I want to provide the community with resources that support the health and development of the family.

LYNN DAVIS- PUBLICATION DIRECTOR

As Arvada Lifestyle’s Publication Director, Lynn Davis works alongside local businesses and individuals to foster connections and highlight exciting people and opportunities in the community. Here is a peak into what she loves most about Arvada and working with the community.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN ARVADA?

I've lived in Arvada for a little over seven years with my husband, Mitch, and our dog, Azra. I’m originally from a very small town in Illinois where my family just celebrated 150 years for our family farm, so small town charm and community has always been very important to me. When we were looking for a place to relocate with my husband’s company, we visited Arvada and went to the Bluegrass Lounge in Olde Town. Everybody was incredibly kind, and we knew this was where we wanted to be.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT ARVADA?

Arvada has the perfect balance of smalltown charm, but it's still a pretty big area. We're a train ride away from Denver and less than an hour away from the mountains. There are also so many creative people in Arvada and that's something really special.

“Our goal is to increase the amount of business that stays in Arvada and give additional opportunities for our partners to connect with the community.”
- Randy Good

WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN ARVADA?

We love to hike, so we have probably been on every walking trail in Arvada. Olde Town is a favorite with places like Lady Nomada and Denver Beer Co. We are also foodies, so we are regulars at Mika Sushi and think that the food at Stone Cellar Bistro, with its rotating menu, is divine.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH ARVADA LIFESTYLE?

I love getting to meet and share the stories of the incredible people behind our local businesses. Everyone has a journey that has led them to where they are and why they do what they do, and being able to share their stories with the community is one of my favorite things.

HOW DOES ARVADA LIFESTYLE INVEST IN THE COMMUNITY?

We shine a spotlight on local businesses, events, and different types of creatives in the community and help them reach more people and grow by sharing their stories. We also foster deeper connections between businesses and the residents that receive our magazine. We're not just a magazine; we're a platform for the community to celebrate.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT WORKING WITH ARVADA BUSINESSES?

Seeing the passion behind each business and the owners come to life when discussing what they do and why they do it is pretty incredible. There is also nothing like being able to help a small business that's just getting started get noticed or hearing that an article or feature brought new customers or opportunities to them.

WHAT WOULD YOU LOVE FOR READERS TO KNOW?

Even though we're sharing a little about the people behind the magazine, Arvada Lifestyle is all about our community.  Whether you're a business owner, a local artist, or someone who just loves this town, we're here to showcase what makes Arvada special. I really want people to know that if they ever have a story they want to share, that I'm all ears and I would love to hear it!

INVESTING IN Arvada’s Future

Mayor Lauren Simpson on Serving Arvada Today to Ensure a Better Tomorrow

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA SLOAN PHOTOGRAPHY AND PROVIDED BY MAYOR LAUREN SIMPSON

Lauren Simpson’s first visit to Arvada was life-changing in more ways than she even realized at the moment. “My husband is a Colorado native, and we moved back here so that we could put down roots and raise a family. We found Arvada and absolutely fell in love with it,” she shares. “We quite literally bought a house here the exact same day we saw it for the first time. The real estate agent brought us out for lunch, showed us a house, and we were under contract before midnight. It was love at first sight.”

Fast forward and Lauren’s community involvement combined with her background in international relations, communications, and public relations led her to join the City Council in 2019. A few years later, Lauren was elected Mayor of Arvada, a role which allows her to pour into the community she has made her home.

“I love the ability to create what I call active good,” she explains. “If there is something that should be done or needs to be done for the benefit of the community, it can be really hard to get traction on creating something. To know where to start, and to know who to talk to---that is something that I am uniquely positioned to be able to do.”

One example is Chow for Champions, which provides catered meals every Thanksgiving and Christmas to first responders and other essential personnel, like water services workers, who work on those holidays. Lauren partnered with the program’s creator, local resident Kimber Just, to get the initiative off the ground during the pandemic. Now five years in, "Chow" has become an annual Arvada tradition with organizations such as local nonprofit Hope, Connection and Community and the Hilton Garden Inn helping to organize and support meal delivery across the city on the holidays.

CONTINUED >

As Mayor, Lauren also leads the City Council as they oversee large projects that will bring benefits to Arvada for generations to come. A few of the major projects currently underway include significant work on the city's sewer systems, exploring options for construction of a new water treatment facility, and continuation of the voter-approved upgrades to 72nd Avenue, which notably includes plans for a new underpass beneath the railroad tracks and safety improvements such as bike and walking paths to the corridor.

“It's a really busy time in the city, with many projects in progress. Not all of it is visible, and some of it may be visible... but not exactly enjoyable,” says Lauren. “When it comes to some of these big infrastructure improvement projects especially, I want residents to be mentally prepared that though it may be painful while we're doing it, it's really important that we do do it. And that once it's done, it's going to be incredible.”

WAYS TO HELP THE COMMUNITY

Mayor Lauren Simpson invites Arvada residents to become more involved in the community by attending community events, volunteering, and joining the City Council for meetings, which are now on Tuesday evenings at 6:00pm. For more information on the exciting initiatives taking place in Arvada, visit arvadaco.gov and follow @LaurenForArvada on Facebook and Instagram.

“Arvada is such a special place because of its long history of community involvement and service, which keeps going strong today.”

Lauren is also excited about the opening of a new quantum research facility and the recent launch of a two-year pilot bridge housing program to help address the homeless population in Arvada. The program provides bridge housing with supportive services for people who are committed to changing their situation and exiting homelessness. This program will work in conjunction with Marshall Street Landing, a new permanent supportive housing being built by the nonprofit Family Tree.

With all of these initiatives focused on improving Arvada, Lauren stresses that it is all about taking care of this area that she and so many cherish.  “Arvada is one of the very best places to be,” she shares. “Those of us on the City Council love this community; it's why we do what we do. But, it doesn't begin or end with us. Arvada is such a special place because of its long history of community involvement and service, which keeps going strong today. When everyday people get involved and contribute in whatever way makes sense for them, we are all better off for it."

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.

EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.

This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.

CREATE SURPRISES

Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an afterschool ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.

CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS

Build weekly or monthly traditions – movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room

dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.

EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE

In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.

KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED

Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.

The drink that makes you look forward to TAX DAY

INCOME TAX cocktail

INGREDIENTS:

• 1½ oz. Gin

• ¾ oz. Dry Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Sweet Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice

• 2 Dashes Angastura Bitters

• Orange Twist

• Glass Type: Coupe

DIRECTIONS:

1.

2. Add everything to your shaker with ice.

4. Pour into your coupe.

5. Twist your orange peel again, like you did last summer.

7. Enjoy being done with taxes.

8. And a good cocktail.

The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies.

The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.
