A Season of Giving, Gathering, and Gratitude

The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season surrounds us, I find myself reflecting on the magic that made this time so special in my childhood. The traditions we create for our own families often mirror those early memories. For me, it’s the familiar smells of holiday candles, the delicious dishes my aunts and grandma would cook, and the sounds of Christmas music filling every room. I loved seeing the bright, colorful lights—especially the bubble lights—and the train that ran under the tree, something my dad, sister, and I would put together every year. I remember spending more time coming together with friends and loved ones during the holiday season than at any other time, making it a season of togetherness.

While those family traditions are deeply special to me, after living away from family and making my home here in Arvada for eight years, I’ve built new traditions in this amazing community. One of my favorite parts of the holiday season in Arvada is the warmth and kindness you feel in every shop and café you step into. There’s something uniquely special about the festive spirit, especially in Olde Town, where every tree lining the streets is lit up, making it feel truly magical. The annual tree-lighting event brings the whole community together —a tradition that I, along with so many others, look forward to every year. And, of course, my all-time favorite, NOEL, a Christmas Pop-Up by The Bluegrass, with its monthlong list of fun events, never fails to get me in the holiday spirit.

This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and the many ways our community helps spread holiday cheer. A big part of this season is about gathering and giving, so we’ve included a festive cocktail recipe to share with loved ones, ways to give back locally, and more to make this winter season truly magical.  While this season can be beautiful for many, it can also be a hard time for others. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of our neighbors who may need a little extra support this time of year.

My hope for you this season is that you feel love and joy, and that we all remember to take care of ourselves and each other.

Happy Holidays!

HOPE IN ACTION

During the covid pandemic, Julia Walker and her son set up a communal food table in a neighborhood parking lot. They were surprised by the community’s response and the level of need uncovered.

“Week after week, it just exploded to the point where we came to the sad realization of how deep the need really is,” shares Julia. “So we decided to create a nonprofit to begin meeting those needs and that’s how Hope Connection Community started.”

The organization’s mission is to meet needs in a unique, individualistic way. Each program allows recipients to have input and a choice in the items they receive. This philosophy shines through in the holiday program, Santa’s Workshop.

“As a mom, I love to go shopping for my kids, have surprises, and look forward to them lighting up when they get something that they asked for,” shares Julia. “At Santa’s Workshop, parents come without their children

Hope Connection Community Toy Drive Making Christmas Brighter for Families in Need

and a volunteer partners with them while they get to go shopping. Parents pick two gifts per child and then visit our wrapping station. We also provide a new stocking for every child that the parents get to fill with candy and a goodie.”

Santa’s Workshop serves children birth to eighteen years old and is made possible by the generous support of the Arvada community through the organization’s annual toy drive. This year, Julia has a goal of serving 2,000 children and their families. A donation of two gifts provides Christmas for one child. The maximum suggested cost per gift is $25 and donated items should be new. Any items left over after the Christmas holidays are used throughout the year to help children celebrate other special occasions such as birthdays.

Donation Information:

Suggestions for younger kids: most any kind of toy, Lego sets, games, dolls/ Barbies, doll accessories, science kits, Nerf guns/darts/accessories, sports equipment/ balls, blankets, piano/keyboard, craft kits, art supplies.

Suggestions for older kids: curling wands/ straightening irons, joggers, hoodies, make-up kits, nail polish/kits, art sets, fast food gift cards ($15-$20), wireless earbuds, sports equipment/balls, blankets, craft kits, jewelry making kits/supplies.

Donations can be dropped off through Friday, December 13th at Arvada Appliance, 9110 W 58th Ave, during business hours or ordered through Amazon for direct mailing to Hope Connection Community by consulting the HCC Amazon wish-list.

Larson's Ski & Sport

A Community Gem for Winter Enthusiasts

Here in Colorado, winter sports are more than just a pastime— they’re a way of life. And thanks to places like Larson’s Ski & Sport, families and outdoor enthusiasts have enjoyed convenient, reliable access to ski and snowboarding equipment for decades. Located just a short drive away in Wheat Ridge, Larson’s has been the go-to spot for those seeking expert advice, quality gear, and community-centered service.

This year, Larson’s Ski & Sport celebrates an impressive milestone: 50 years in business. Owner John Larson, who began working at the shop in 1979 and took ownership in 1984 at just 21 years old, has been the heart and soul of the business. Over four decades, he’s transformed Larson’s from a small seasonal rental store into a full-service ski and snowboard shop. “We’ve grown by listening to our customers,” says John, “and we strive to deliver what they need.” This customer-first approach has shaped Larson’s into a cornerstone of the local winter sports community.

One of the hallmarks of Larson’s success is its commitment to knowledgeable, expertly trained staff. John sends his team to regular training sessions to ensure they stay up-to-date on the latest ski technology and best practices. “One of the most valuable things we can do is provide service,” John explains. “We train our staff to be the best experts in town.” Whether it’s a custom ski boot fitting or equipment tuning, Larson’s offers personalized services that bigger chain stores simply can’t match.

For new skiers or families, Larson’s popular seasonal rental program provides a low-commitment way to enjoy winter sports. This program allows customers to rent equipment for the entire season, with the flexibility to swap items if something doesn’t quite fit. In addition to rentals, Larson’s has a full-service shop for everything from waxing and tuning to boot customization, ensuring each piece of gear performs at its best.

Another beloved tradition at Larson’s is their ski swap, which has run twice yearly since the mid-1980s. These events allow customers to trade in gently-used equipment for something new at a fraction of the price. “It’s great for kids and beginners,” John says. “And it keeps old gear from piling up, which is sustainable too.” With families flocking to these community-oriented swaps, Larson’s has become not just a store but a gathering place where winter sport dreams come to life.

From quality service and expertise to a deep commitment to their customers, Larson’s Ski & Sport is more than just a shop—it’s a vital piece of winter sports culture. To learn more visit larsonsport.com

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
