Love is in the Air

Happy February!

Everywhere this month, you’ll be drowning in Valentine’s Day memes & themes, but the best kind of love is the love you give yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in looking for approval or affection from others, but the truth is, real love starts with you. When you take care of yourself— mentally, physically, and emotionally—you build confidence and respect for who you are. Self-love isn’t about being selfish; it’s about recognizing your worth and setting boundaries that protect your peace. Accept your flaws, celebrate you strengths and be kind to yourself, especially when things get tough. When you look after your own needs, you’re in a better place to love others without losing yourself in the process. The more you care for yourself, the more you connect with who you really are, and that’s where the best love begins.

BTFL are the best kept secret in Wall, and they now have a very exclusive high-tech beauty treatment that can do wonders for your skin. Mike Duffy is here to remind us to keep working on our new years resolution to get fit- he has a whole team to help you. And when it comes to your finances and coverage - you should only use local experts- so we have chatted with Daniel Monzi of ICG NEXT about financial planning, and the Maghan Agency of Tinton Falls about insurance!

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.

Don’t Give Up Now

Did you know the second Friday in January is known as “quitters day”? It’s the day when 80% of people have already given up on their New Years resolution.

If staying active, lifting weights, or getting fit was on your list, working with a personal trainer can help you get back on track and meet your goals.

Mike Duffy founded Mike Duffy’s Personal Training after noticing a need for people to learn how to exercise properly and safely. He saw individuals risking injury from poor form or spending too much time on routines that weren’t helping them

INVEST 30 MINUTES A DAY TO MEET YOUR FITNESS GOALS

“WE CAN MAKE OUR PACKAGES BUDGET-FRIENDLY, AND THE VALUE OF EXPERT GUIDANCE AND FASTER RESULTS MAKES IT WORTH

achieve their goals. Driven by a genuine passion for helping others, Mike Duffy focuses on teaching efficient training methods that lead to faster, more sustainable results. Duffy’s mission is to support his clients in reaching their fitness goals while giving them the confidence that they are doing so in a way that is both safe and truly effective for their bodies.

Duffy has been involved in sports his whole life, playing football, baseball, and wrestling as he grew up. To build strength and confidence, he began weight training and was amazed at how quickly his body transformed. The strength he gained not only improved his performance on the mat and field but also fueled his passion for fitness. Driven by a desire to learn more, Mike immersed himself in every article, magazine, and book he could find about nutrition and training. This pursuit of knowledge eventually led him to earn a BS degree in Exercise Science from Rutgers University. Today, Mike is dedicated to using his personal experience and expertise to help others achieve their health and fitness goals safely and effectively.

WHY SHOULD YOU WORK WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER?

A personal trainer is like a professional tutor for your health and fitness. They provide expert guidance, helping you get fit faster and more safely than if you went it alone. Trainers create customized workout plans tailored to your goals, ensuring you focus on the most effective exercises with the best technique. They save you time, keep you motivated when your energy drops, and hold you accountable, so excuses don’t get in the way. A personal trainer becomes your partner, supporting you throughout your fitness journey.

What’s the story with the 70+ year old female weight lifter?

Vicki Maneff is a 73-year-old retired school teacher who has shown incredible perseverance and strength. When I first met Vicki, she was in immense pain, and it was difficult to watch her struggle to get out of her car and use a walker to enter my facility. Day after day, week after week, month after month, Vicki showed up. Despite her many injuries, she never wanted me to take it easy on her. In fact, she loved working out hard, and we used a variety of techniques to accommodate her needs. With careful planning and her unwavering attitude, we prepared her for hip replacement surgery and worked together afterward to improve her strength and quality of life. Strength, in particular, became a vital focus for her future. Over about five years, Vicki progressed remarkably. She now leg presses over 800 pounds in the last few months and set a national record in the deadlift for women aged 70-74 in her very first powerlifting meet. These goals were achieved through small, consistent steps, fueled by dedication and persistence. Thinking back to when Vicki could barely crawl into my studio fills me with awe and admiration for how far she’s come.

HOW LONG SHOULD PEOPLE YOU WITH A PT?

I believe everyone can benefit from working with a personal trainer, especially when starting out. Trainers help you reach your goals faster and more safely, and they offer continuous support and accountability. The duration depends on your goals and progress, but even short-term guidance can make a significant impact.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MACHINES, OR CIRCUITS TO USE WITH CLIENTS?

My favorite training approach is using timed circuits. They really push my clients to work harder, stay focused, and maximize the intensity of their workouts. I like to mix it up with a variety of exercises, incorporating machines, bodyweight training, kickboxing, and Pilates. This variety keeps the workouts fresh and engaging, ensuring clients never get bored or feel like they’re doing the same thing every day. I believe in tailoring workouts to each individual, so I rarely repeat the same routine twice—unless, of course, a client has a favorite. Variety is key to maintaining motivation and delivering results.

HOW CAN YOU STAY MOTIVATED TO WORKOUT?

Hire a personal trainer! A trainer will help you push through tough days, keep you accountable, and ensure you stay on track. They will assist in setting clear, attainable goals tailored to your needs and help you discover exercises and workout routines you truly enjoy. When you enjoy your workouts, you’re more likely to stay motivated and committed. Variety is also key to keeping things exciting. A good personal trainer is trained in many different types of training, offering a wide range of exercises and training routines to prevent boredom and keep you engaged in your fitness journey.

WHAT’S

THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT WORKING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER?

Personal training can be an investment, it’s often more affordable than people think. We offer various pricing options, including group sessions, small group sessions, 30 and 60-minute sessions in various packages with monthly payments, which can make it more budget-friendly.

Vicky Maneff

Additionally, the value of expert guidance and faster results can make it worth the cost in the long run. I have seen people workout by themselves for years and not get any results when just a small tweak in their nutrition plan would boost their results tremendously.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME TESTIMONIALS AND FAVORITE CLIENT TRANSFORMATIONS?

My favorite testimonials and transformations come from clients who have achieved incredible health improvements—lowering their blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and A1C levels, as well as healing issues like IBS, through proper nutrition and consistent workouts. I’ve had clients lose over 100 pounds, 49 pounds in just six weeks (yes, six weeks!), and hundreds, if not thousands, of clients shed 20 pounds with ease. I’ve also helped clients improve scoliosis and recover from other back injuries, enabling them to avoid surgery. While I have many favorite transformations (you can see them on my website), the most inspiring part of my job is seeing my clients succeed. Their success motivates me to continue doing what I love, knowing that I’m making a real difference in their lives.

LOCAL EXPERT ADVICE

THE ROSS MAGHAN AGENCY

It was 2004, and Ross Maghan III was facing a dilemma.

Things were going well at the time.

The Matawan native was living in downtown Philadelphia with his wife, Mara, they both had jobs that they liked and were thinking of a future there.

Trades, trying to make it in a still-developing borough.

“There wasn’t a lot of stuff going on at the time,” Ross III said, “so they had to do a lot of things to make a living.”

That meant insurance, but also real estate and other related services for

“WITH MAGHAN INSURANCE, YOU GET LOCAL EXPERTS WHO PERSONALIZE YOUR POLICY NEEDS”

At that point in time, their future did not include returning to New Jersey. But, plans can change. It all stemmed from a conversation with Ross’s father, Ross Jr. The family’s business, The Ross Maghan Agency, was facing a significant challenge. National insurance carriers were flooding the market, posing a threat to independent agencies like theirs. He needed help, and it would mean Ross III and Mara, a Pennsylvania native, leaving Philly for the Jersey suburbs. His father was asking him to reimagine the family business, established in 1936, and ensure its stability for future generations, and clients.

How could he say no?

IN THE BEGINNING

When Ross III’s grandfather and great-grandfather, Ross Sr. and George, respectively, started their business, they were like Jacks of All

the multifaceted agency, which still has the same phone number today that it’s always had, 732-566-0003.

“Theirs was the third phone number ever issued in Matawan,” Ross III. said. “People used to just pick up the phone and ask the operator to connect them with ‘Matawan 3’.”

By the late 1960s, the area started to become more populated, and the firm began selling insurance exclusively, which was a successful move for decades, until Ross III’s father reached out, seeking help.

CHANGING INDUSTRY

It is borderline impossible to watch anything on TV and not be attacked by insurance ads.

Jake is over here, Flo is over there, and that guy with the bandages on his face is wreaking havoc everywhere else.

“People don’t realize that they don’t have options for homeowners insurance,”

Ross  said,” Most people see ‘bundle home and auto insurance and save 15 percent’ on TV, and they’re really not saving.”

The secret there, Ross III and Mara say, is the home policy. Auto coverage “is almost a pure commodity,” where home policies can be written in a way that reduces cost while limiting exposure. Bundling can undercut that.

COMING HOME

On a walk along the Asbury Park boardwalk, Ross III and Mara, newlyweds at the time, hashed out the move from Philly to New Jersey. While Ross III dove head-first into the family business, Mara worked in sales and marketing for another company. By 2008, Mara joined the firm full-time.

To push back against the reach of bigbox carriers, Ross III, Mara and the team at the agency leaned into their local knowledge, expertise and industry connections to deliver quality coverage for clients. As an independent agency, they can source policies from various providers to find the best options.

WITH “BUNDLE AND SAVE” ARE YOU REALLY SAVING?

“We have a lot of options for people, both commercial and personalized,” Mara said. “The advantage with someone like us is, we can take your particular exposure and develop a policy that works for that.”

For example, their firm has insurance offerings for farmers and houses of worship. That’s a level of coverage that some large carriers do not offer.

“With farms, you’ve got exposure to a lot of equipment. Most farm structures are a good distance away from (fire hydrants). It’s not an area of expertise (for large carriers),” Ross III said. But, for them, it is. “My family on my father’s side, they were in the horse and farming business in Holmdel for hundreds of years, going back to the 1700 and 1800s.”

Flo can bundle all she wants, but she can’t touch that kind of local history.

Q & A Get on Financial Track

LOVE YOUR BANK BALANCE!

This year, one of your goals might be to save more, and have a realistic timeline for retirement and beyond. Working with a financial planner offers expert advice in investments, tax strategies, retirement, estate planning, and risk management, tailored to your goals. They provide objective, unbiased guidance, helping you navigate market volatility and personal stress. Ultimately, getting started can seem a little scary, right? We talked to Daniel Monzi, of ICG NEXT about financial planning for 2025, for more details.

Do you know when you can retire? If not, it’s time to figure it out!

WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND WE WORK WITH A PLANNER?

When working with a certified financial planner, you are able to create a structured approach to your financial well-being. A sound financial plan first and foremost takes your goals & objectives into consideration, the entire process is geared towards your unique circumstances. Once your goals & objectives have been identified, a financial planner can specifically detail the steps necessary to get you from where you are to where you would like to be.

Ongoing guidance from a financial planner helps you make informed

decisions and stay on track toward your goals. We’ll regularly assess your progress, identifying successes and areas for adjustment to ensure you remain aligned with your objectives.

WHAT IF I AM IN CREDIT CARD DEBT?

Managing debt of all kinds, including credit card debt, is one of the pillars of financial planning. Addressing outstanding credit card debt is something that we routinely work through with clients as it is necessary before we turn our attention towards other financial goals & objectives. We can develop an aggressive pay

down strategy with you to minimize interest and time in paying off the debt. We will work with you to not only address the debt itself but also identify the root cause that led to the accumulation of credit card debt in the first place. We can then establish measures to ensure that we address any future accumulation of credit card debt sooner rather than later to avoid major disruptions to your financial plan.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE ANY SAVINGS RIGHT NOW AND NOTHING TO INVEST?

Savings & investments are one single component of a comprehensive financial plan. There is no minimum savings or investment requirement to engage in a financial planning relationship with myself or my firm. We will work with you from your exact starting point, regardless of what you have accumulated thus far. The only requirement we hold is that you are open and receptive to advice. This allows for us to engage in open and honest discussion when planning for your future. In part of our planning, accumulating savings and investments will very likely be a step in the process and one of the objectives we look to help you accomplish.

HOW WOULD YOU GET STARTED?

Getting started is as simple as a brief (typically 20-30 minute) introductory phone call to learn about your current circumstances. From there, my team & I would look to gather some documentation to conduct an initial comprehensive review of your current finances in anticipation of an in person or virtual meeting. Based on our review and follow up meeting, we would then propose our specific recommendations and action items for you to address. These recommendations will be formally detailed to you in writing for your review and consideration.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

There is absolutely no cost for the initial financial analysis process I described above. We will spend the time to meet with and learn about you, conduct a full review of your finances and ultimately deliver you our full recommendations in a detailed, written communication. We feel that before clients choose to partner with us, we should deliver them tangible recommendations that are specific to them & their needs. Inclusive with our recommendations would be the specific costs

Daniel Monzi ICG NEXT

to you should you decide to engage in a financial planning relationship. The most common structure we utilize is referred to as a fee-based relationship in which we are solely compensated based on a percentage of the value of your investments.

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR WORK?

The most rewarding part of my work is helping clients through life’s major events—births, losses, moves, marriages, divorces, retirement, and job changes. Being there during times of uncertainty, stress, or grief, and offering support or reassurance, reinforces my belief that a financial planner’s role goes beyond just investing.

Daniel Monzi lives in Asbury Park with his wife, Kim, their daughter, Francesca, and their dog, Charlie. They enjoy exploring town, traveling to National and State parks, and staying active with exercise.

Monzi specializes in wealth preservation, investment management, retirement planning, and estate planning. He’s also dedicated to giving back, serving on the board of A Need We Feed, a non-profit that provides meals to those in need in Ocean County, NJ. Additionally, Daniel is the President of LeTip of Asbury Park. Connect with him at www.icgnext.com , or at danielm@icgnext.com

CURIOUS ABOUT MEDICAL SPA TREATMENTS? HERE’S THE BREAKDOWN OF WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

ARTICLE BY APCL STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE SHERPOW OF FINDORION PHOTOGRAPHY
Britta Milan, (L) & Katie Green (R)

BTFL aesthetics is the go-to medial spa in Wall for personalized, expert and affordable minimally invasive services in the discreet setting of Salons by JC Suites in Wall Township.

Regardless of your gender, if you are curious about wrinkle relaxers, biostimulators, semaglutide, dermal fillers and more, Britta Millan and Katie Green are the professionals who want to help you treat yourself.

BTFL was created when Green approached Millanthey both had over a decade of experience in “real medicine”, like assisting in surgery and gynecology,

and they wanted to work in a field that brings joy to everyone, “fun medicine”. With little kids at home and busy juggling-it-all lifestyles, the ladies at BTFL (which is short for beautiful), know firsthand how important it is to look and feel your best. For the BTFL ladies, aesthetics is a great blend of art and medicine, and their shared passion creates beautiful and natural results. Since the start of this year, they have the exclusive UltraClear Laser, which is currently only available in one other spa in New Jersey, and exclusive to Monmouth County.

BTFL is the second spa in New Jersey to get the exclusive UltraClear Laser

Botox, Biostimulators & Filler

Botox treats expressive wrinkles, to lift and open the eyes, lift the neck and correct any facial asymmetries. It’s the OG and it rarely fails to produce amazing results. Millan is passionate about fitness, and loves dysport because it is fast acting and works well their athletic clients.

Radiesse - stimulate collagen while giving subtle volume, versatile product requires less aftercare by patient. Particularly in the lower face/jaw and neck/chest.

Lip filler - for lip augmentation and volume. Support aging lips. Hydration. Also helps with lines around the mouth. The ladies of BTFL love Revanesse LIPS, its natural looking and feeling. It injects evenly, with less migration and lumps/bumps than other products.

Cheek filler - “I call it the push up bra of the face!”

Millan says, it restores lost volume from aging, really refreshes and rejuvenates the face. Depending on their clients needs, the ladies gravitate to Radiesse, restylane contour and RHA 4 for this. They give a nice lift to the tissue while keeping a natural round dome look.

How to Pick a Treatment

First stop at any spa should be a consultation. At BTFL, Consults at BTFL are an hour long. Millan and Green spend time getting to know your aesthetic goals, do a full face assessment with photos of your face at multiple angles and sometimes even ‘with expression’ to see how your face moves (and where the wrinkles gather). Each face and body is unique, and at a consultation, they discuss your full health history, describe all the products and devices pertinent to your goals, and answer any questions.

“There is no pressure to get a treatment at a consultation, you can always think about it and book the service later.” Millan told us.

BTFL offers Two free consultations per year to help you decide what you need while keeping the pressure off your wallet.

Botox, Dysporyt and Xeomin are brand names for wrinkle treatments

Ultraclear Laser

“There is not one person who could not benefit from this laser! “ Katie told us. “The laser is able to work gently as a superficial resurfacing treatment or work aggressively for collagen remodeling and skin tightening treatment, and everything in between.” It is a customizable ablative fractional laser (people commonly call it a cold laser) which means it delivers thermal energy with less thermal damage than other ablative lasers. This means shorter downtime (more than half the downtime compared to other devices), less discomfort with procedure (less than half the pain compared to others). Clients don’t require topical anesthetic with certain settings because it’s so tolerable. It also has the ability to tighten sagging skin with its laser coring feature, which is unique to this device. It can yield a non-surgical lift of the neck like nothing else on the market, rivaling a surgical neck lift even. It is safe on all skin types, treats pigmentation, fine lines as well as deep wrinkles and tissue laxity/sagging skin.

Weight Loss Shots

BTFL SLIM is a lipotropic injection designed to support fat breakdown. It contains methionine, inositol, and choline, which help with lipid metabolism. Methionine supports immune function and detoxification, inositol aids cell membrane production and insulin regulation, and choline promotes fat breakdown for energy. This weekly subcutaneous injection can be used for up to 12 weeks to help with fat loss.

Semaglutide - Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analog, it works by binding to and activating the GLP-1 receptor, thereby stimulating insulin secretion in the pancreas and reducing blood glucose. It increases satiety (you feel full longer), delays gastric emptying and by result your appetite is suppressed and you consume less. It is a subcutaneous injection that is given weekly. Not everyone is a candidate for semaglutide, but it results in larger weight loss than SLIM and is often better for those starting on a large weight loss journey. For those with smaller weight fluctuations, bloat and wanting less aggressive intervention SLIM may be more their speed.

Teoxane Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers

Maintenence

Botox: Requires some upkeep - approximately every three to four months if you want to stay fresh, no matter the brand. The drug wears off, if you want to maintain your results you have to keep retreating when movement returns at those intervals.

Filler: depends on your goals—very patient specific.

Lip filler: the results will last 6-12 months, but if you are new to the process, it is advised to build your lip volume with smaller amounts, which will require a few trips to get it perfect.

Cheek filler or Jaw: 12 to 18 months.

Hyperdilute Radiesse: every 12 months once goals are achieved.

Britta likes to say starting a filler journey is like maintaining a luxury car. “I tell them it takes a lot to gas up the car, but then it’s an easy drive. Meaning you often need a lot of restoration, product and work initially, but once we have achieved your goals maintenance is often much lighter work. A little “top off” every 12-18 months as we go along.

Botox is the oil that keeps the engine running, if you’re doing filler you really want to adjunct with it for the most natural ride (results).”

How Scary is the Process?

That depends! For both procedures, Green and Millan use the smallest needles possible to keep the discomfort to a minimum. Botox is injected with an ultrafine needle, so small you barely feel them, causing minimal discomfort.

For filler the ladies numb the starting sites, and after that most of the sharp work is done. Using a cannula that glides under the skin, people say they barely feel it.

“Some areas of your anatomy can be a little spicy, but we account for those when doing this so there’s no real surprises. We also have distractors in the office, like vibrators and stress balls. These help your brain feel less pain, by processing vibratory stimuli instead of pain and keep you from tensing your muscles.”

Aftercare

‘Tox -- don’t touch the treated area and no hats for 4 hours after. No exercise for 24 hours.

Filler—often product line specific but generally—don’t touch the treated area, don’t exercise, and don’t wear makeup for 24 hours.

At BTFL, the ladies give you an aftercare kit, with personalized instructions, and are available to chat to if you have any follow-up questions or concerns. For Katie and Britta, their relationship with clients is the most important thing. “We get to make people feel beautiful and that is a fulfilling experience,” Katie told us. “We have so much gratitude to the patients that have entrusted in us!”
