t home in Asheville—is there any place you would rather be? In this issue we wanted to highlight some amazing personal spaces that reflect the creativity and beauty of our mountains. What is your favorite room in a house? So many things go into making a home, and each room offers unique respite. In our home the back porch is both a sanctuary and gathering place. Many celebrations have taken place here and many quiet moments have been shared. Home is a refuge and a place for your children to always return. It is the one place where you can wear pajama bottoms all day, scream at the tv, and eat with your elbows on the table.

rtist Linda Gritta is an interpreter. Metaphorically, of the emotions and memories she translates
into thickly-colored paintings, but literally too, as an interpreter in sign language. For a long time, it was to that literal field of interpretation that Gritta devoted herself. Despite growing up with a passion for the arts, Gritta initially chose a different path. “It didn’t seem practical when I was deciding what to do in college, with all those voices that say ‘no, you’ll never make it as an artist,’” she remembers. “I came from a family of
Abstract Interpre
teachers, and my grandparents were deaf, so my first degree
was in deaf education. On the side I did my own artwork, and
I thought I was going to be a ‘dabbler.’” Gritta raises her fin-
gers into bent quotation marks around the word “dabbler,” and
pauses. “Somewhere around my mid-thirties, I realized that just wasn’t going to be enough.”
With two young kids in one arm and a handful of doubt in the other, Gritta enrolled at Converse College and pursued another degree in Fine Arts. Over the years she devoted herself not just to the craft, but to the study of it, traveling north to New York to study at the NY Studio School and the Art Students League of New York whenever she could, and at Penland locally. “My degree gave me solid classical training, and all the other things I sought out allowed me to find my own voice,” Gritta says. As she began to find stable footing as an artist, a new challenge arose in the form of a divorce. Like so many now-Ashevillians, Gritta headed to the mountains for solace and new beginnings. “I’d visited Asheville enough times that I knew it could be a nice place to regroup— that was 12 years ago,” she says with a laugh. “I didn’t know anyone, but I met many other artists, musicians and dancers. It felt like pulling your ship into a port city where everything was available.” Gritta found so much in Asheville: success as an artist, healing through dance, and her husband (who she met doing the Argentine tango). Now she’s one of Asheville’s most sought-after artists, juggling solo shows (including one next spring at UNCA) and commissions. Gritta’s popularity means she receives dozens of requests from organizations for donations every year, and there’s one group to whom she always says yes: the Western North Carolina AIDS Project. “Their impact is so direct to changing lives and saving lives,” Gritta says of the organization. This year her work, “Red is Feeling Brave,” was selected as winner of the Signature Piece competition for the annual Raise Your Hand Auction & Gala, which took place on September 23. Like much of her work in recent years, “Red is Feeling Brave” is thoroughly abstract, a swirl of crimson and umber that asks the viewer to look closer and think harder. “I love to really dialogue with each painting, it’s like cooking without a recipe,” Gritta says of the welcome challenge of abstraction. “It feels especially creative and takes me to a different place. I like that the viewer then is also invited to get out of their rational brain. There’s no easy out, you can’t engage at only a rational level. Abstraction invites them to play a little, and I don’t think in our daily lives we have an opportunity to do that, to relax our rational brains.” As Gritta points out, it’s all a matter of interpretation. 26

that, but we’d definitely like to pass this on to our kids.” It’s an open display of the genuineness that marks all that the Walshes do, an almost old-fashioned authenticity that defines their relationship, their business, and the house they call home. umber—and even the Walshes themselves harken back to a simpler time, a time when furniture, and love, were built to last. Which makes the fact that they met through the distinctly contemporary vehicle of Craigslist all the more compelling. Despite the internet’s hand in their partnership, it was their shared passion for mod design that ultimately brought them together. A white, vinyl, tufted bench caught Megan’s eye on the site back in 2013. When the gruff seller rebuffed her request to buy the bench (a buyer had already claimed it), Megan asked him to let her know if the deal fell through. Which it did. The rest, as they say, is history. Well, a history with a hand set squarely in the realm of fate. “We tell people you have to have a lot of faith to be in this business,” Megan says. “It’s almost spiritual,” Todd adds with a nod and a smile. It’s a sentiment that pervades their life; from their personal relationship, which bloomed from their business partnership, which in turn emerged from that initial Craigslist encounter, it’s fate who seems to have guided their twined paths. Married since 2014, the Walshes have grown their local business into the Southeast’s preeminent home for authentic mid-century furnishings, meticulously refinished to their groovy glory. Like any small business, Atomic has faced its fair share of challenges—fruitless buying trips, a saturated market—but it seems that faithful fate always steps in, and those challenging buying trips end with a final trove of flawless finds. They don’t leave it all to fate, of course; the Walshes have also adapted to a shifting, growing market in innovative, authentic ways. When they began Atomic Furnishings, what’s now a mid-century craze was merely a modest trend, and over the years they’ve grown with it, or even around it. As it becomes more and more difficult to track down authentic mid-century furnishings, the Walshes are considering alternatives. “We’re shifting into manufacturing,” Todd explains of Atomic’s upcoming projects. “We want to make mid-century looking pieces that are still built to last.” Their storefront is also shifting with the times, from a warehouse bulging with antiques into a true gallery in which each piece is displayed as the piece of art that it is. It’s a concept that’s being implemented in their new showroom, a cavernous space off Merrimon in Woodfin. It’s big enough to hide a woodshop in the back (for that new manufacturing endeavor), a gallery for goods, plus mini-shops for peddling locally-made wares and specialty products. The heart of the business remains the same: mid-century furnishings lovingly restored for the 21st century. The customers who come to the Walshes for both furniture and design consultations span a spectrum, from younger folks looking to furnish their first homes, to retirees who want to outfit their houses in the style of their childhoods. With credenzas and coffee tables, in rattan and teak and warm, worn walnut, the Walshes help turn houses into homes. Much as they did with their own property, a unique house set high on a hill in Burnsville. “When we say we live in a Hap House, local Burnsville residents kind of raise their eyebrows,” Megan says of the small community she and Todd call home, an intentional amalgamation of unique homes that provide an enclave for artists of all types, from potters to weavers. The exterior—dark-veined concrete and muted wood—blends into the mountainside scenery, but the interior does anything but. It’s an homage to the goods that brought (and now keep) them together, a patchwork of mid-century color and design: fawn-tinged leather, bold teal and burnt orange, brass and glass and tufted, wooled wall hangings. Lived-in and well-loved, the mid-century treasures all blend together into a house that is distinctly, authentically home. October 2017 | Asheville Lifestyle

Road Trip
O
ur mountains offer a relaxed retreat for vacationers, and they have for centuries. It’s to the medicinal draw of our sweet
mountain air that we owe many of our monuments; the men behind Biltmore, the Grove Park Inn and even Lake Lure built their busi-
nesses and homes here after healthful getaways in the Asheville area. These idyllic mountains continue to call to vacationers, but with development and city expansion there are few serene pieces of property left to escape to. That’s what makes this luxury cabin in Marshall so special. “Every once in a while, if that, a plot of land becomes available that is distinct in the three critical elements of location, access, and view. This is one of those properties,” says builder Bill Hanke of Alderman Homes. Perched 800 feet above a bend in the French Broad, the soaring views are truly unrivaled. “As fortune would have it, the property was purchased by a family who was able to pay homage to the view and commission an architect to design a home to match its grandeur yet not overpower it, a home that sets into the side of the mountain as if it grew from it,” continues Hanke.
Mountain RETREAT
This getaway was designed for fractional ownership (see sidebar), so the home features uniquely private elements, including a master suite on the main with lower level separation of family or guests and owner lockouts on both levels for security and convenience. The four bedroom, five bath home includes luxury amenities and is located just two doors down from the French Broad Crossing Clubhouse. The luxuries of the property are tremendous, but even those are secondary to the true star: the views. “When we look out the towering windows and see the mountains and hear the river below, we feel like we

Douglas Chen. “We’ve searched throughout the western Carolinas, and don’t believe you will find a more majestic view than found here.” It brings to mind the era of the Vanderbilts and the Groves, the unsullied, pristine nature that inspired a generation and the beautiful town we call home.

usage rights based on time. In other words, only one owner will be allowed to use a particular home or apartment at a particular time. Here are some answers to your questions: Q: Why would a vacation home buyer consider shared ownership? A: Sometimes it’s hard to justify purchasing a vacation property, whether because of price or because you’re worried you won’t make much use of it. Fractional ownership solves both those problems because each co-owner only pays a fraction of the costs, plus you're more like to use the home during your allocated time.
Proud to offer Good Hands® protection to our community.
Q: How are fractional ownership usage rights divided? A: Deciding how to share the property is usually step one; it’s important to balance predictability and flexibility. Generally rights are decided based on the property’s location and size, its seasonality and the likely length of visits. The usage periods can vary from certain days to certain months, or they can be variable (meaning they change each year). Q: How are fractional ownership expenses divided? A: Operating expenses—think insurance, maintenance, repairs, improvements, utilities and management—are usually divided in
