AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Asheville Lifestyle in 2018! It seems like just yesterday we were planning our Derby Party. (Can you believe that was in May?!) There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often looking ahead to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year! Happy Holidays, Your Asheville Lifestyle Team

SEAN SULLIVAN BEGAN WORKING ON HOMES IN 1995. He was employed with a construction company that was slowly winding down and in the stages of going out of business. During that time, Sullivan began to work on his own, and what started with side jobs and renovations, soon became large-scale home projects. Since the company’s formation, Living Stone Design+Build has crafted countless homes within the immediate Asheville area. Living Stone maintains a high level of professionalism. Their reputation is merited and they’re proud of their work. To build happier, healthier lives is their mission, and the homes they build are green, with a focus on healthy indoor air quality. Every home is unique and, as such, calls for a unique team. With so many projects going on at the same time, good management is one of their keys to success. Living Stone also strives to keep their process closely tied to their clients, who, in turn, appreciate the level of intimacy the company brings to their projects. Living Stone’s latest project is the Sennett Residence:

the retaining wall that allowed room for a solid foundation. After months of preparation work, the home itself began to take shape on the lot. The entire construction process took two years. The Sennett residence is built with five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms and features interior furnishing by ID.ology Interiors & Design–an Asheville-based company that partners with Living Stone’s clients during the homemaking process. A large living area that connects to a dining room looks out to a breathtaking view of Asheville through large windows that let light into the home. Living Stone homes are green, so solar panels are utilized to help power the beautiful home’s large living spaces. A passive radon system helps to prevent the entry of unwanted gasses to the home.

W I N T E R’ S REVEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2018
FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-the-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.
1
THE DRI N K S
Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.
2
THE DECO R There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE ARTICLE EMILY SHEA
ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS HAS A SIXTH SENSE FOR INTERIOR DECORATING. She’s so talented, but she’s not even an interior decorator. (She’s actually a nurse.) I, on the other hand, like to wing it. My apartment follows no color scheme and is basically a conglomerate of items I’ve bought over the years simply because they look cool. And whether the person that you’re shopping for is like me or my best friend, one thing we have in common is that we want our homes to be warm and inviting to our friends and family. Much like other people, we want our space to welcome our guests with open arms, especially during the holidays. So here are five items that bring a sense of warmth and love to a space during such a time of gathering. Enjoy! 20

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE (CON TI N U ED) We all know this type of person. You know, the one that loves all things food. Sometimes referred to as a gourmand, a gastronome or even an epicure, a foodie is someone who takes a particular interest in food and drink. Whether it’s in the kitchen or out in the community–although, it’s typically both–foodies are curious souls that often take part in food-oriented activities such as wine tastings, restaurant openings and closings, brewery tours and beer samplings, cooking classes, food fads, food science and culinary tourism. This list of carefully curated gifts is foodie approved by none other than myself and will provide that special foodie in your life with the perfect holiday present to keep their food-lovin’ spirit alive.

change by the second. It’s overwhelming. Unfortunately, this can make buying the perfect present for someone that already seems to have it all very difficult. The best thing to do: Think simple and don’t give yourself too many options. It’s true that the more options you have, the harder it’s going to be to make a decision. (You, walking through the department store aisles, searching aimlessly for Christmas gifts until your eyeballs are about to pop out of your head, listen closely.) Here are five gifts that you simply can’t go wrong with buying this holiday season. They are, what you may consider, essentials– things someone either can’t live without or didn’t know they needed. That, my friends, is the perfect kind of present.

BAKED BANANA FRENCH TOAST WITH PE ANUT BUT TER DRIZ ZLE INGREDIENTS FRENCH TOAST + 8-10 slices whole grain sandwich bread + 2 bananas, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch wide rounds + 4 large eggs + 2 cups low-fat milk of choice + 1 teaspoon cinnamon + 2 teaspoons vanilla extract + ¼ teaspoon salt + 1 tablespoon butter, melted + 1 tablespoon honey + 2 teaspoons turbinado sugar INGREDIENTS PEANUT BUTTER DRIZZLE + ½ cup maple syrup + ⅓ cup peanut butter (plus a little extra) + 2 teaspoons turbinado sugar DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Arrange the slices of bread on a large baking sheet and bake for eight minutes, turning halfway. 2. While the bread bakes, whisk the eggs in a medium-sized mixing bowl; then whisk in the milk, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. 3. Stir together the honey and melted butter in a small bowl. Whisk into the egg mixture. 4. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan. Cut the slices of bread in half, then quarter the last four pieces. Arrange the halved slices into rows in your baking pan. Fill in any empty spots with the quartered slices. 5. Place your banana slices between the slices of bread. Slowly drizzle the egg mixture over the bread. Using your hands, softly press the bread into the egg mixture so that it is fully submerged for a few seconds. Sprinkle the french toast with a couple teaspoons of sugar. 6. Bake for about 60-70 minutes, or until the french toast in golden and the custard is set in the middle. 7. While the french toast bakes, make the peanut butter drizzle. Start by heating the maple syrup on your stove using low heat. Stir in the peanut butter, adding more than 1/3 cup if you want it sweeter. Remove from heat and drizzle over the french toast or serve on the side. Recipe adapted from CookieAndKate.com.

MERRY MAKEOVER ARTICLE EMILY SHEA PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON
THIS FALL, ASHEVILLE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE TEAMED UP CHILDREN FIRST/COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS (CIS) AND TWO LOCAL BUSINESSES TO CELEBRATE A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO JUST IN TIME FOR BACK TO SCHOOL. Each lady chose a new outfit from the downtown boutique, Hazel Twenty, and had their hair and makeup done by the amazing stylists at ananda hair studio. 30
Asheville Lifestyle | December 2018
Stephanie and her daughter, Aubrey, were chosen by Dani Wilber, who is placed by Children First/CIS as a Student Support Specialist at Elben Intermediate School, where Aubrey attends school. “I wanted them to have this special makeover because they have such a close relationship, and Stephanie has always taken such an active role in being there for her kids,” said Wilber. “What I do wouldn’t be as effective if Stephanie wasn’t as involved as she is. It’s a real partnership!” Wilber first met Stephanie through the food pantry at Children First/CIS’ Family Resource Center in the Emma Elementary School community. For several years, Stephanie has volunteered with and been involved in multiple programs of Children First/CIS, including Motheread, a literacy program for parents that helps adults to discuss real life topics through the use of children's books and instill a love of reading in their children. Stephanie also helps Wilber support Aubrey's success in school. During the school year, Aubrey is involved with Wilber’s Homework Club and the Working Warriors after school program. In these programs, she is given the tools she needs to develop into a responsible and hardworking student and, ultimately, live to her fullest potential. She learns about leadership, empowerment and accountability by interacting in a positive, forward-looking environment. When students aren’t engaged in school, they are more likely to drop out. Wilber and the
other
Student Support Specialists at Claxton Elementary, Emma Elementary, Estes Elementary and Johnston Elementary work to improve attendance, behavior, coursework and parent engagement. Parents who play an active role in their children’s education help them reach their full potential. Children First/CIS works alongside students and their families to make sure they have the tools they need to be successful in school. They serve over 4,400 children and 300 families annually through their programs. In addition to providing resources like food boxes and clothing, Children First/CIS aims to create lasting relationships with students and parents through tutoring, mentoring and parent workshops. Together, resources and relationships make Children First/CIS part of the solution that helps students stay in school, graduate, and achieve in life. To learn more about Children First/Communities In Schools and support the work they are doing, please visit www.childrenfirstcisbc.org.
