DEB O’KEEFE

the pivot from morning radio to interior design

Finding Answers at Home

I met Deb O’Keefe four years ago, just after I’d moved to Austin, and just after her chapter as the voice of Austinites morning commute as co-host of the ‘Jason & Deb’ morning show on 101X came to an end. At the time she was in the middle of renovating her home and like many of us, was struggling to find a good person to hang her wallpaper. So, she apprenticed, then went to school and conventions and became certified to do it herself. At the start of this year, she debuted her own design company, currently specializing in wallpaper hanging, called Hyde Park Wall Co. With technology and AI changing so many professions and leaving people to figure out what’s next, we were profoundly inspired by the way Deb pivoted, discovered a new passion and has made it an already lucrative career. Fun fact, this month’s cover story was actually shot at my house, more specifically, the new tiny house that I recently had built by Backyard Pod, while Deb wallpapered the bathroom! Elsewhere in the issue, we talk to Austin native and SXSW’s VP of TV & Film Claudette Godfrey (who’s embarking on her 20th SXSW this year!) about her illustrious career and what we can expect this year.  We had a chat with Austin artist Avery Price who captures notable places in the capital city – from Barton Springs to Nickel City – in watercolor; share how you can have a turnkey wellness setup in your backyard from Sweat Decks; get tips for navigating the Round Top Antiques Fair from interior designer Christina Cruz and design hacks on a budget from interior designer Audrey Scheck. Speaking of a budget, next month our issue has a lot of great features focusing on money matters! Until then, thank you for reading! Cheers,

OMAKASE FOR EVERYONE

Tancho Sushi's serving up a simple and reasonably-priced omakase experience

Guided by a philosophy of “omakase for everyone,”

Tancho Sushi simplifies the omakase sushi experience with four thoughtfully curated preset menus: The Omakase, The Grand Omakase, The Light Omakase, and The Roll Omakase.

“We’re here to make sushi approachable for Austinites while honoring the integrity of this cuisine. We keep the focus on the ingredients. By stripping away unnecessary flourishes, we allow the quality of our fish to take center stage,” says Brad

Van Otterloo, co-founder of Tancho Sushi. Tancho’s dedication to craftsmanship is evident in its housemade soy sauce and ponzu, as well as its signature open-hand rolls.

The restaurant has a laid-back vibe and whether at the sushi bar or a table, reservations aren’t required. Tancho is also well-stocked with to-go boxes because their omakase is great for takeout or delivery for an at-home date night, or a night when you feel like sushi, but don’t want to go out.

Every Spring and Fall Vendors from around the world descend upon a charming tiny town in Texas to showcase their vintage items. Now recognized as hosting the world’s largest antique show, Round Top (population 95), is met with over one hundred thousand visitors shopping for unique vintage treasures. Christina Cruz, principal designer and founder of Austin-based Christina Cruz Interiors, has been to the show eight times and says every year there is something new to discover! “The thrill of the hunt is what I love most about going to Round Top. While you can certainly buy beautifully restored furniture, what excites me is discovering unexpected pieces—like a unique table base that we can repurpose into a one-of-a-kind dining table with the perfect marble top. It’s all about finding treasures you can’t find anywhere else, pieces that are truly irreplaceable,” she says. The next show is March 22nd - April 5th and Christina shared tips with Austin Lifestyle on navigating the show, which can sometimes feel overwhelming to a first-time visitor.

TIP 1: WHERE TO START

Warrenton. Arriving at Round Top can feel overwhelming— miles of tents and barns stretch across the area for the over 4000 vendors offering incredible treasures. Coming from Austin head straight to Warrenton first, known for great deals and opportunities to negotiate. There start at hotspots like Box Road and Excess I & II where you’ll discover mid-century gems from vendors like Period Modern and unique finds from Jersey Junkers. Once you’ve scored some deals, make your way toward Round Top. As you get closer, don’t miss The Compound, where you can shop while enjoying live music, or Jardin de France and The Porch, both offering carefully curated collections you won’t want to miss.

TIP 2: NOT-TO-MISS TENTS

Be sure to visit The Horseshoe, The Arbors, Market Hill and Blue Hills. These particular tents and showrooms are packed with treasures, offering a mix of new and vintage furniture, rugs, art, and décor. Whether you’re hunting for one-of-a-kind pieces or just

browsing for inspiration, there’s truly something for everyone at these must-see locations.

TIP 3: ONE-OF-A-KIND FASHION FINDS

The fashion scene has exploded in recent years with vintage dealers offering perfectly worn-in Levi’s and colorful kimonos. You’ll also find pop-ups from more mainstream brands, like custom hat maker Kemo Sabe out of Aspen.

TIP 4: WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Start your day at The Coffee Shop, where you’ll find amazing coffee and breakfast tacos to fuel up for your shopping adventures. For lunch, Mandito’s is a great choice for flavorful dishes and margaritas. For a chic dining experience, check out Boon and Co. where you’ll find a gorgeous bar serving up expertly crafted cocktails. Another great choice for a drink is Ellis Motel, a trendy bar located right in the square. For dinner, we recommend Lulu’s, a charming restaurant located in the heart of Round Top Square,or Y Comida at Bader Ranch, where you can enjoy a prefixe meal with stunning sunset views. Just make sure to book a reservation in advance!

Looking for a hidden gem? Don’t miss Chef Victor Hugo’s Pop-Up Dinner at Oak Bones This under-the-radar spot offers a relaxed vibe and a delicious pre-fixe menu that’s well worth a visit.

TIP 5: SHIPPING IS EASY

Transporting larger items from Round Top is easier than you think! Many vendors work with trusted shippers who can expertly package and deliver your items to Austin—or anywhere else.

TIP 6: MAKE IT A STAYCATION – BUT BOOK EARLY!

From chic boutique hotels like The Frenchie and Lulu Hotel to vintage-inspired Airbnbs, there’s no shortage of stylish places to stay. But, book early—lodging in Round Top fills up fast! If you’re unable to secure a spot in town, consider staying in a nearby area like Brenham, a 25-minute drive away.

“Wallpaper installation is definitely a niche profession, but I love the process and transforming someone’s room from bland to stunning.”

Deb O'Keefe... After Morning Radio

The former radio personality shares her pivot from deejay to designer

For more than two decades, Deb was the familiar voice for Austin’s morning commute. As co-host of The Jason and Deb Morning Show on 101X, people who never met her felt like they knew her, and many miss her since she’s been gone from the airwaves.

After stepping away from radio in 2021 Deb found herself at a crossroads. She briefly started a podcast, first on her own and then with Jason before taking an unexpected turn after discovering a new passion -interior design.

Today, Deb is the proud owner of Hyde Park Wall Co., a boutique wallpaper installation and home styling business and she lives in Hyde Park with her rescue Frenchie Alfie, Kit, the once-stray kitten she found at the radio station, and Coco, a long-haired no-tailed cat she adopted from Tomlinson’s. We caught up with her for a chat about her career pivot, from her unconventional path into radio to her vision for Hyde Park Wall Co. and more

WHAT LED YOU TO MOVE TO AUSTIN?

I moved here the very end of 1999 with my then-husband for his new job. Our marriage didn’t work out, but I fell in love with Austin and had made some great friends, so staying here seemed like the right thing to do.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT AUSTIN?

I’ve traveled a lot and have found that many capital cities around the world have become very homogenized. And, even though Austin has been through a lot of changes in the time I’ve been here, it remains a very green city with lots of beautiful trails and waterways, which as a dog mum is important to me. I love our parks and outdoor spaces and take advantage of them as often as possible. And obviously, I love our music and arts scene!

HOW DID YOU BECOME RADIO DJ?

A friend heard that JB and Sandy were looking for a new ‘sidekick’ and entered me into the competition for the position. Somehow, I won, and my radio career began there at Mix 94.7. After we went off air every morning, I would sit in with the other DJs and sound engineers to learn all the other aspects of the business. It was definitely an unorthodox entry, but I loved it and worked hard to become the best radio personality that I could be.

WHEN DID YOU LEAVE 101X?

February of 2021, just a few days before Snowmageddon. Talk about a strange time!

LOOKING BACK, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT DOING THE JASON AND DEB MORNING SHOW?

The sense of being a part of the Austin community and having a connection to our listeners was wonderful. I felt like we had the opportunity to talk about real issues and give a voice to those who didn’t have one.

I liked organizing fun events to bring our listeners together that would always have a tie-in to a local animal charity. For example - sure, come out and play softball with us at the Dell Diamond and win some ACL tickets, but you’ll also be contributing to the low-cost spay and neuter programs that Emancipet provides. And I loved working hard to create content that entertained our listeners. Whether it was on-air, online or in-person, our job was to get people through their awful commutes with a smile on their faces so they didn’t think about being stuck in the car in Austin traffic!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE INTERVIEW?

We did soooo many amazing interviews it’s hard to pick the best one! My favorite interviews we did are probably with comedians. They always come with something funny to say, and that just makes the interview flow easily. Kevin Nealon appeared on our show many times and it was always like meeting up with an old friend again. I’ve been known to brag about having a lot of soulmates, but Kevin is definitely up there as one of my top ones. He’s also a vegetarian and animal lover and was especially fond of my dearly departed dog Blue. Jon Gries aka Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite is also a standout interviewee and is still a friend in real life.

ARE YOU STILL IN TOUCH WITH JASON?

Jason and I are still in touch as he’s basically family. He was my work husband for over 15 years! After he left 101X we started our own podcast, which I loved doing so much -  more than doing my own podcast. When that came to an end - not my decision - I was very upset.

WOULD YOU WANT TO EVER GET BACK INTO RADIO OR PODCASTING?

I think that Jason is my radio soulmate and I’m not sure I could capture that magic with anyone else. I’ve had offers and discussions about re-entering radio, but the whole industry has changed. Massive syndication and jocks putting out several different shows a day to different towns is the new way. I don’t

like it one bit. Austin loves local, and I love Austin. Anything else just feels so inauthentic. I’m not saying I wouldn’t consider radio/podcasting in the future if the situation was right, but it would have to be something special.

AND NOW YOU HAVE YOUR OWN WALLPAPER-HANGING COMPANY; HOW DID THAT PIVOT COME ABOUT?

Hyde Park Wall Co. was born out of my own selfish desire to remodel my laundry room! Last year I decided to take a sabbatical to figure out which direction my life was going to take. During that time I planned to tackle some home and garden projects that had been bugging me for a while. I designed and built my first house in 2005 and when I bought my current house in 2015 I remodeled it one room per year, so I’ve always had a passion for interior design and love seeing a vision come to life. Several years ago I hired a lady to install wallpaper in a couple of rooms in my house. It was difficult to find someone who even did wallpaper back then, and when I discovered that the wallpaper lady was retiring, I decided to just take matters into my own hands and figure out how to do it myself! A friend introduced me to someone who had been hanging wallpaper for years and I started to learn the basics.

Deb in matching Katie Kime wallpaper & pajamas

Then I found an online course that was put together by the WIA - the Wallcovering Installers Association - and upon graduation, I joined the association and even attended the annual conference in Philadelphia last September. It was there that my career took a huge turn. I found an amazing community of professional wallpaper installers who were so passionate about their craft and willing to mentor me and take me to the next level in my new career. It all seemed a little crazy after 20 plus years working in an industry that generally pitted you against your competition! These new friends of mine, from all over the country, will pick up the phone or answer a text any time I have a question or issue with an install.

IT SEEMS STILL HARD TO FIND MANY PEOPLE TO HANG WALLPAPER IN AUSTIN

Wallpaper installation is definitely a niche profession, and I think it’s partly because it’s very difficult! There are so many types of wall coverings and so much that can go wrong! But I love the process, and once I’ve transformed someone’s room from bland to stunning, it’s all worth it.

WHAT ARE SOME PROJECTS YOU’VE DONE, AND HOW LONG DOES SOMETHING LIKE A BATHROOM TAKE?

I’ve installed wallpaper in small residential bathrooms, 10,000-square-foot  mansions, farmhouses, and even a med spa. A small bathroom can take just a few hours and sometimes I’ll find myself working in a house for several days to weeks…I love doing murals. The transformation a room goes through once a mural has been installed is just stunning.

DO YOU PREFER PEEL AND STICK OR TRADITIONAL WALLPAPER?

Peel and stick is the biggest con in the DIY space in years. It’s pushed as homeowner-friendly, but most experienced wallpaper hangers won’t even install it. My advice is to buy the traditional wallpaper and have one of us do the hard work for you!

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR YOUR COMPANY?

Hyde Park Wall Co. isn’t just wallpaper! I see the company growing into a full-service house styling business. I have many clients who lean on me for selecting the wallpaper, accompanying paint color and even light fixtures and furniture. After styling my own houses all these years I can visualize my clients’ ideas and help them come to life. Some clients come to me with the desire to make changes, but they’re overwhelmed by so many decisions. I know some paper hangers who say, ‘you pick it, I’ll stick it’ and I’m the opposite. My job is to help the client make an informed, aesthetic decision that they’ll love to live with.

I found an amazing community of professional wallpaper installers who were so passionate about their craft and willing to mentor me and take me to the next level in my new career.

QUICK FIRE:

Favorite dog rescues Love-A-Bull, Stand Up For Pits, and Emancipet are some of my favorrite organizations.

Favorite workout I love just weightlifting, but I’m currently a member of the new Nike Studio in The Triangle. I love their workouts!

Favorite restaurant in Austin Even though Austin has garnered some new James Beard and Michelin awards recently, Uchiko will always be my favorite restaurant.

If you could have one superpower It used to be mind reading, but now that the quality of airline travel has declined so much in the last few years, I think I’d like to be able to fly! Just think how much more traveling you’d get done!

Final Thoughts Adopt don’t shop! And, please don’t get a Frenchie. I love Alfie with all my heart, but this breed should be banned. It’s inherently cruel to these poor little guys.

Capturing Austin Through Watercolors

Artist Avery Price paints Austin’s most popular and often overlooked places

Artist Avery Price’s portfolio paints a picture of Austin both old and new through a series of watercolors, like a love letter to the place she’s always called home. Avery, an Austin-native, turned a passion for art that began at the age of four into a thriving career, highlighting the beauty and unique charm of Austin in every brushstroke.

Painting professionally since 2017, Avery says nearly all of her pieces are Austin-themed. The first one she painted was Pool Burger, but she tells Austin Lifestyle she loves painting architecture because “the details, clean lines, and vibrant colors are so satisfying to capture.” She equally enjoys painting dive bars, saying, “I enjoy transforming overlooked spaces into something beautiful and unexpected in the fine art world.”  Some of her most popular prints include Matt’s El Rancho, Barton Springs, and Deep Eddy Cabaret, but also include everything from First Light Bookstore,

Amy’s Ice Cream, Este, the South Congress Hotel, Aba and Yamas. It’s a perfect gift to commemorate a first date or place that holds symbolic significance.

Avery’s process begins with a sketch. “I start by finding the perfect reference photo and lightly sketching the angles and proportions to ensure accuracy before I begin painting,” she says. Each piece takes an average of 6–8 hours, though she often works on multiple paintings simultaneously, jumping between layers.

You can find Avery’s work for sale at local shops including Lilla & Beth, Luxe Apothetique, Blue Elephant, ATown, Liz James, and Cathedral or for purchase on her website https://coloringaustin. com/. You can also commission a piece and Avery will paint the place in Austin that holds a special place in your heart, and occasionally, she’ll take a commission unrelated to Austin.  Follow her on Instagram @coloringATX.

YOUR BACKYARD SPA

AUSTIN-BASED COMPANY IS TRANSFORMING BACKYARDS INTO PERSONAL WELLNESS RETREATS

Wellness hacks that once required a trip to a spa are becoming increasingly accessible at home. Sweat Decks is making it even easier, building personalized wellness retreats in customer’s backyards. The company was founded in Austin 18 months ago and has already expanded to California and Houston, creating bespoke outdoor spas that combine luxury and health benefits.

Sweat Decks specializes in designing and building custom setups that include saunas, cold plunges, showers and decks. Although they say conventional saunas are their bread and butter, they also offer infrared saunas, which have grown in popularity, and describe the benefits of each on their website. Cold plunges, available in various shapes and sizes, are designed for full-body immersion, providing benefits like reduced inflammation and improved mental clarity. Outdoor showers and beautifully crafted decks complete the setup, creating a cohesive and functional wellness space.

“We create your perfect home oasis,” says the team. The process begins with filling out a form on their website, followed by a consultation where the team collaborates with clients to design their dream setup. They tell Austin Lifestyle the typical timeline from consultation to completion is about four weeks and pricing is customized based on factors such as square footage, materials, and additional features, ensuring each retreat is as unique as its owner.

Interior designer Audrey Scheck shares how to get luxury looks for less

Audrey says her journey in design can be traced back to watching her parents build their dream home in rural Texas when she was a child. She took the leap and launched Audrey Scheck Design in Austin in 2020 and says she’s enjoyed being able to collaborate with clients to create timeless spaces that will be cherished for years to come. “Each project is

Vintage Art + Decor  Paint

Shopping at your local antique mall is a great way to achieve a luxury look for less. A key element to crafting a cozy, inviting home is blending old and new to create a space that feels both unique and personal. Antique finds can add character and depth to your home, turning it into a story-rich environment.

One of our favorite ways to transform a home is through paint. Consider painting your cabinets or color-drenching your bedroom (painting all surfaces the same color) to completely refresh the look of your room without overspending. Color drenching brings a sense of richness and warmth, making the space feel both cozy and sophisticated.

a reflection of thoughtful consideration for both functionality and comfort, resulting in homes that feel artfully layered yet deeply personal,” she says. “I’m passionate about mixing the old with the new and creating a sense of coziness through layers of textiles, patterns, and earthy tones that make a home feel both inviting and unique.”

Decorating a house to feel like a home can be an expensive endeavor, but Audrey says, “One area where people often overspend in interior design is on custom pieces. While custom furnishings, window treatments, and cabinetry can undoubtedly add a unique and personalized touch to

a space, opting for custom everything can quickly deplete a budget. Custom items tend to be more expensive due to the materials, craftsmanship, and design time involved. My advice is to strike a balance, combining a few custom items with high-quality, ready-made pieces that can achieve the same luxurious look without the hefty price tag. Another recommendation is to prioritize more durable and timeless finishes that will stand the test of time and trends.”

Below are four more design hacks to make your living space look lux, without draining your bank account.

Design Hacks:

Hack 3

Family Heirlooms:

A wonderful way to infuse your home with character at little to no cost. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, artwork or decorative object, heirlooms are often one-of-a-kind treasures with deep personal significance that add a sense of history to your home. And, heirlooms are typically crafted with high-quality materials, bringing lasting character to your space for years to come.

Hack 4

Forage for Greenery:

Adding greenery to your home is a great way to bring color, texture and life into a space. While fresh florals or faux stems often come with a steep price tag, a simple and cost-free alternative is foraging from your own yard. Gather fresh stems or branches with interesting textures or flowering vines to give your home an organic feel.

Claudette Godfrey is Curating SXSW Magic

The VP of Film & TV has grown alongside the increasingly impressive festival

Claudette Godfrey is a born and bred Austinite. She went to the University of Texas, got a job with South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2006 while still a student, and she’s still there today. Over the last nearly two decades, she’s worked her way up from a volunteer to her current position as Vice President of Film & TV for the iconic festival. She’s spent the better part of the last 20 years championing boundary-pushing stories, discovering emerging voices, and shaping SXSW into a launchpad for some of the most exciting projects in film and television today.

In our interview with Claudette she reflects on her journey at SXSW, the festival’s evolution and her vision for its future. From groundbreaking premieres like Everything Everywhere All At Once to championing hidden gems that surprise and delight audiences, she opens up about the secret sauce of SXSW, the challenges of curation, her passion for celebrating creativity in all its forms and what she’s excited for this year’s festival which will take place March 7-15.

YOU’VE BEEN WITH SXSW FOR A LONG TIME! WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH SXSW?

It’s incredible to think this is my 20th SXSW! I started as a crew manager and intern before landing my first paid position while still in college. The thing I love most is our team’s spirit - we’re all passionate about creating the best possible experience for our audiences. Discovering and elevating work we love is incredibly rewarding, and the creative energy here is truly special.

THE FESTIVAL HAS CHANGED A LOT IN THE LAST 20 YEARS. WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE THE BIGGEST CHANGE?

The technological evolution has been remarkable. We’ve moved from opening packages of VHS tapes and projecting 35mm prints to being fully digital - from submissions to exhibition. This has made filmmaking and festival submission more accessible for everyone. We are always focused on the future, and know we always have to be adaptable, and accept nothing stays the same.

YOU’VE HAD SOME BIG PREMIERES AT SXSW IN RECENT YEARS, BOO KSMART (2019), INTRODUCING, SELMA BLAIR (2021), EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022),  CIVIL WAR (2024), CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE EXCITED TO SEE THIS YEAR? (THIS WON’T BE OUT UNTIL FEB 27)

I’m thrilled about our 2025 lineup! The Studio and We Are Storror will surprise and delight audiences, while The Makings Of Curtis Mayfield, directed by H.E.R., offers unprecedented insights into the iconic musician. We’ve got Holland with Nicole Kidman and Gael Garcia Bernal, Death Of A Unicorn with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and the visually stunning Ash directed by Flying Lotus. I encourage everyone to explore

“It’s incredible to think this is my 20th SXSW! I started as a crew manager and intern before landing my first paid position while still in college.”

beyond the headliners - there are incredible films across every genre waiting to be discovered.

HOW MANY FILM SUBMISSIONS ON AVERAGE DO YOU RECEIVE EACH YEAR AND HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT MAKES THE CUT?

We typically review between 7,500-8,500 submissions annually across all our sections. Every project is watched by multiple programmers, and the most compelling work rises to the top through team discussions. We pride ourselves on discovering emerging talent and championing original voices across all genres. It’s not just about star power or budget - we’re looking for authenticity and that special quality that makes audiences say, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.”

HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU ESTIMATE YOU AND YOUR TEAM SPEND WATCHING SUBMISSIONS?

If one person watched every submission back-toback, it would take about 196 days without sleeping, eating, or bathroom breaks! Thankfully, we have an incredible programming team that divides and conquers, but we’re basically watching submissions for six months straight.

HOW MANY FILMS DO YOU ACCEPT EACH YEAR?

We present over 200 projects annually across our program, including features, TV premieres, shorts, music videos, independent pilots, and XR experiences. The exact number varies based on runtime and venue availability.

ON THE TV FRONT, SXSW AUDIENCES HAVE BEEN THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO EXPERIENCE  RAMY (2019),  BEEF (2023),  3 BODY PROBLEM (2024). HOW IS YOUR TV SHOW VETTING PROCESS DIFFERENT FROM FILM?

The core focus remains the same - we’re looking for compelling storytelling that will resonate with our audience. The main difference is considering how

series build their worlds and sustain their narratives across episodes. But whether it’s film or TV, we’re drawn to original voices taking creative risks.

WHY IS SXSW A GREAT PLACE FOR A FILM (OR TV SHOW) TO PREMIERE?

SXSW offers creators an unmatched launch pad where film, TV, music, tech, and culture converge. Our passionate audiences are known for their energy and enthusiasm, and the festival’s timing and Austin location make it perfect for launching projects. Because SXSW brings together innovators from multiple industries, premieres here get a uniquely electric energy.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF DURING YOUR TENURE AT SXSW?

The collaborative spirit of our team. We each have individual perspectives, tastes, and expertise, but we share this absolute dedication to discovering and championing emerging voices. Watching how our festival has grown while staying true to that mission is incredibly rewarding.

WHAT’S BEEN ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN YOUR JOB?

One of our biggest challenges - which is also what makes SXSW special - is finding the right balance across multiple dimensions. First, there’s the art of curation itself - we’re looking for films and shows that not only excite us personally but that we know will resonate with our adventurous SXSW audiences.

Then there’s the operational side - coordinating hundreds of screenings across nine days while making sure every filmmaker and project gets the attention they deserve. And of course, we’re part of this amazing convergence of events - the Film & TV Festival runs alongside our Conference, Music Festival, and Comedy Festival. Making it all work seamlessly takes incredible teamwork across the company.

But honestly? That’s also what makes SXSW magicalall these different creative industries coming together in unexpected ways. The challenges lead to incredible moments of discovery.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION GOING FORWARD?

To keep evolving with the industry while maintaining that special SXSW spark. We want to continue being a place where boundary-pushing storytellers can find their audience. That in-person connection is more meaningful than ever.

WHAT’S A GOAL FOR THIS YEAR?

Creating more opportunities for our filmmakers and creators to connect with each other and our industry guests. The networking and community-building that happens at SXSW can be just as valuable as the screenings themselves.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF YOUR JOB?

I’m a total water baby and love spending time outside. When I’m not at screenings, you might find me in my hammock with my number one best friend, my dog Pickle, practicing meditation, or jumping on a trampoline. Though honestly, I’m a ravenous consumer of storiesfilm, TV, podcasts, it follows me everywhere

DO YOU THINK YOU’RE A SXSW LIFER, OR IS THERE ANOTHER DREAM JOB OUT THERE YOU ASPIRE TO TRY ONE DAY? MAYBE MAKE A FILM YOURSELF?

I’m a firm believer in staying present - as the Buddha says, “The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There’s only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment.” Right now, I’m focused on being a cheerleader for our amazing SXSW filmmakers. Being a filmmaker requires deep passion and almost “obsessive” dedication - that’s how my staff might describe how I feel about SXSW! So I guess maybe I’m a lifer?!

Landscape Architect vs a Gardener

7 differences according to Word + Carr Design Group’s Sarah Carr

Sarah, a sixth-generation Texan, started as an architect and spent the first years of her career designing thoughtful urban residences in Austin, in addition to building her own home by hand. She says these early experiences gave her the confidence to take calculated risks, which coupled with her observant and intuitive nature, led her to change careers to landscape design and ultimately, to leading the design-build firm she owns with her business partner, Mark Word.

Over the past decade, Sarah has grown Word + Carr Design Group into a leading landscape architecture firm, known for designing impactful outdoor spaces that seamlessly blend function, beauty, and sustainability. In addition to many high-profile residential projects, they’ve worked on commercial properties including Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin Motel and Hotel San Jose in Austin, Pullman Market in San Antonio and Albert Hotel in Fredericksburg. Here, she helped us understand the differences between a landscape architect and a gardener.

1.  FOCUS

Landscape architect plan and design outdoor spaces to be beautiful and functional, taking into account both the environment and the needs of people. Projects may involve ecological restoration and community engagement in addition to design and project management. Skillset includes the ability to shape the land for access, grading and drainage, protect existing trees and buildings, design structural elements, plan vehicular and pedestrian circulation, specify plants and trees, meet city, state and federal regulations for public safety and code compliance.

Gardeners maintain properties by planting, pruning, weeding, pest management and overall upkeep of garden plants, trees, and crops. They’re often tasked with preserving the historical character of gardens. As plants grow, there is a shift in their relationship to each other. For example, as trees

mature they will cast more shade onto adjacent plants.  To maintain harmony, each species must be managed over time.  Gardeners anticipate and respond to these patterns of growth and change.

2.  TEAM

Landscape architect Depending on the scale of any given project, a landscape architect may lead or collaborate with a team comprising clients, architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, city planners, contractors, arborists and other professionals.

Gardener Works with a client or community and manages a team of groundskeeping staff depending on the size of the property.

3.  PLANNING VERSUS MAINTENANCE

To use a metaphor, landscape architects are a bit like horse breeders, and gardeners are a bit like horse trainers. Landscape architects make decisions to fit the needs of people into the environment and gardeners help these spaces reach their full potential.

4.  TOOLS

Landscape architects use both hand-drawing and drafting tools, and computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce visualization drawings, renderings and detailed construction documents. They use project management software to coordinate with design and construction teams. Geographic information systems (GIS) tools may be used to study land features, and a series of measurement devices are used in the field to understand relationships and scope of the physical site.

Gardeners use a host of trimming, pruning and digging tools to diagnose, trim, and treat plants and soil, in addition to scheduling and planning aids.

5.  DISTINCT KNOWLEDGE

Landscape architecture is a STEM discipline requiring study in design, history, art history, environmental science, horticulture, structures, engineering and construction science, among others. To be successful, landscape architects also need to be conversant in local land development code and building regulations, contracts and how to work with and manage groups of people.

Gardeners must have a deep understanding of the local climate and ecosystems. They need exhaustive knowledge of plant habits, as well as skill in weed control, pest and disease management, fertilization and seasonal care.

6.  TIMING

Landscape architects are generally most active in the planning and construction stages of new projects.

Gardeners on the other hand, gardeners are more present for seasonal changes and consistent care.

7.  TRAINING

Landscape architects often complete undergraduate and master’s degrees at university.  They must work under the supervision of an established professional for a period of months or years before becoming eligible to take licensure exams.

Gardeners There are many paths to becoming a skilled gardener. Some undergo formal training in horticulture, historic preservation, or botany. Others learn the trade by spending years in the field to understand how different species behave in specific climate and soil conditions.
