or the first 30 years of my life, I never understood why people claimed the holiday season was stressful. The holidays were all good. Home cooking, watching football, ski trips (aprés ski), more football watching - how could THIS be considered stressful? This was utopia if you asked me. My only real task was to hit up a TJ Maxx or Marshall's by December 23rd to grab three simple gifts for my immediate family members. Hold that thought for a moment.
This issue was so enjoyable to put together because of all the local businesses that were involved. There aren't too many places I can think of where, in a five block radius, one has so many locally-curated options for unique holiday gifts. Also featured are some of Boulder's most well-respected event planners that educate on "modern day etiquette" for party hosting. Here's my tip: you know that bottle of White Zin that has been in your garage fridge for two years because someone left it at your house? Don't bring that to a Christmas party. Fast forward from bachelorhood to my first year of marriage. Like clockwork, on December 23rd, I headed to TJ Maxx with a little extra pep in my step. I was going to buy my lovely wife a present for our first Christmas as a married couple. I was only there for a few minutes when I spotted it. Bam. I still remember how it shone under the flickering fluorescent lights. A stainless steel, half-gallon coffee thermos was the winner. So practical, and perfect for any coffee lover. After opening about five amazing gifts Katie had bought me, I started to get an uneasy feeling in my stomach. The excitement on her face soon turned to a puzzled look as she pulled the thermos out of the box. "This is a joke, right?" My reply, "Uhh, err, uhh. Well honey, I thought this would be great for us to take out on the boat to keep our coffee warm." I was not a bachelor anymore.

By the next winter, we had a baby boy in the mix with a daughter on the way. Year three, yep, you guessed it, another bundtling in the oven. While there isn't as much napping, watching football, and bombing down the mountain with a pack of mad men as there once was, I couldn't be happier. With that I say, let the chaos ensue!

Around Town LAFAYETTE HONORS 2014 GREEN BUSINESS WINNERS Eight Lafayette businesses were presented with awards at the October 21 City Council meeting to recognize their efforts towards becoming more sustainable. The City of Lafayette Energy Sustainability Advisory Committee (LESAC) established the Lafayette Green Business Program in 2011 to recognize local businesses making steps to positively impact Lafayette’s environmental footprint. To qualify, businesses meet requirements in six categories; energy, zero waste, water, transportation, community, and health and wellness. This program is a collaborative effort of LESAC, the Lafayette Waste Reduction Advisory Committee, and the 2014 sponsor, Xcel Energy. Silver level award winners are: Barnes Electrical, Cairn Christian Church and Sister Carmen Community Center. Gold level award winners are: Jax Outdoor Gear, Lafayette Elementary, Living Design Studios, Ryan Elementary and Pioneer Elementary. For more information about the City of Lafayette’s sustainability efforts visit CityOfLafayette.com/GoGreen.
Lafayette honored nationally as a top parks and recreation agency The National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) awarded the City of Lafayette the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management recently at the annual Congress & Exposition in Charlotte, NC. This award positions Lafayette as the best of the best nationwide for populations less than 30,000. Founded in 1965, the annual Gold Medal Award program honors only five agencies in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development and professional development. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials. Projects within the last five years that have gained recognition for the Departments include: The Lafayette Skatepark, the Lafayette Quest Scavenger Hunt to combat childhood obesity, the acquisition of over 231 acres of open space land, the addition of four miles of trails, the Parks Division’s Junior Ranger youth employment program and many more.
YMCA CELEBRATES 140 YEARS IN BOULDER COUNTY The YMCA chapter is celebrating its 140th year. The organization celebrated the milestone at its annual Halloween party Arapahoe Center in Lafayette. The YMCA plans to continue the celebration through serving the community as it has for the past 140 years. The YMCA was founded in 1874 and operated out of rented spaces and catered to Christian men. In 1908, the organization built a building with rooms and apartments for the men and a pool for swimming lessons. The building was sold when the YMCA could no longer afford to maintain it. Today the group has locations at 2850 Mapleton Ave. in Boulder and 2800 DagnyWay in Lafayette. They will continue the community service by addressing issues 10

such as the achievement gap, obesity, physical fitness and family programming. The organization recently partnered with Boulder Community Health to implement a diabetes prevention program and the Boulder Valley School District to offer swimming lessons to all second-grade students.
CENTAURUS COUNSELOR HONORED Sarina Gonzales, a counselor at Lafayette’s Centaurus High School, was named the 2014 Secondary School Counselor of the Year by the Colorado School Counselor Association. As a state finalist, Gonzales and will compete for the American School Counselor Association’s National School Counselor of the Year Award. Gonzales was chosen based on several criteria, including effective counseling programs, school counseling innovations, leadership and advocacy skills and contributions to student advancement.
FLATIRONS CHURCH GETS MUCH-NEEDED PARKING Lafayette’s Flatirons Community Church is one of the fastest-growing churches in the country, and it’s feeling the effects outside the building. Church members are forced to park along Waneka Parkway and Robin Street during Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning services. The main parking lot has 735 spaces, and a second lot added a coupe of years ago holds another 425 cars. However, even the second parking lot hasn’t kept up with the growth. It’s estimated that about 200 church-goers park on the street. The Lafayette Planning Commission has approved the church’s plan for a third lot east of the Jax outdoor store on U.S. 287. The new lot will have 265 spaces. The lot will be designed to include landscaping and to minimize residential impact. A new pedestrian crosswalk will be at the intersection of Waneka Parkway and Robin Street.
LEFT HAND BREWING COMPANY WON 3 SILVER MEDALS AT THE 2014 GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL October 6, 2014, the largest commercial beer competition in the world featured 5500 entries from 1300 breweries. Left Hand took honors for their Milk Stout, Smokejumper Smoked Imperial Porter, and Black Jack Porter. The Longmont brewery received the highest medal count for Colorado and tied with only three other breweries for the most medals won overall. 2014 marks Left Hand’s second year in a row achieving a three medal win, for a total of nine medals in the last five years. Left Hand’s medal count highlights the brewery’s notable prowess for brewing dark styles. Seven of Left Hand’s nine wins over five years have been for darker beers including 2X Milk Stout, 2X Fade to Black, 2X Smokejumper, and Black Jack Porter. Milk Stout is a genre favorite for the sweet stout category, while Fade to Black & Smokejumper highlight the brewery’s strength for hand smoked malt. “We are very proud of the recognition we have received for our dark beer portfolio in recent years. In 21 years of brewing, we have always strived to brew meaningful, timeless beer with notable balance and complexity.” comments Eric Wallace, LHB President & co-founder.

“He kept bringing us beer. One day Eric asked what it would take to open a brewery. I made a business plan and now we’re here.” One of the finest beers to be had at Liquid Mechanics is the Colorado Red Ale. All of the ingredients are locally sourced. The malt and hops are from the western slope and the yeast comes from Colorado Springs. TAP TUESDAYS
While not guaranteed, the brewery does their best to unveil a new beer every week on “Tap Tuesdays.” One Tuesday in December, Liquid Mechanics will unveil their very first barrel-aged Whiskey Porter. The bourbon barrel was obtained from Spirit Hounds in Lyons and will house an Imperial Porter that won’t last long. Get a pint before it’s gone!
Three Men and a Barrel LIQUID MECHANICS BREWING: FROM BIOLOGY TO BEER
D
avin Helden, Eric Briggs and Seth Townsend are the co-founders of Liquid Mechanics Brewing, a new craft brewery in Lafayette. Before opening Liquid Mechanics, all three of the owners had worked with each other at different bio-technology and pharmaceutical companies. Townsend is the head brewer and has been a home brewer for more than 18 years, winning several local and national homebrew contests during that time. Davin says, “He kept bringing us beer. One day Eric asked what it would take to open a brewery. I made a business plan and now we’re here.” While in the bio-tech industry, Helden, Briggs and Townsend had their roles in manufacturing “Human Therapeutic Injectables.” If you think about it, they‘re still in the business of creating a therapeutic substance for humans to “take in.” While they don’t offer intravenous beer consumption apparatus (defeating the purpose of great taste), they do their best to give you the appropriate glass for the style of beer your drinking. BEER
Head Brewer Townsend says, “We like to play around with the classic styles.” Liquid Mechanics focuses on having Belgian, German and American styles brews at all times. They’re especially proud of their Kolsch and Altbier style beers, as they are not too common among craft brewers in the area. The Kolsch style is light, refreshing and crisp. While the Altbier is a German Brown Ale brewed in the Dusseldorf style, providing a balanced hop and chocolate flavor. 12

GIVING BACK
Every month Liquid Mechanics supports a different charity by holding fun events at the taproom. December’s event is a mustache competition that takes place on the 7th. Ten percent of all sales on that day will be given to the Soup Strainer Society in support of prostate cancer awareness. Judges will evaluate and give prizes. Beer will be drunk and mustaches will be waxed. Don’t miss this one! QUALITY TRIFECTA
All three owners agree with Davin when he says, “If you miss out on one of three important things – beer, space and service – people will go somewhere else. We have hundreds of bosses every night. We prefer them to our old bosses.” There’s even a sign on the bar that makes it clear to all customers who’s in charge here, and that’s them, each and every patron. Comment cards are appreciated and beer opinions are a must. Liquid Mechanics Brewing has recently received a lot of attention for dumping a 10-barrel batch of organic pale ale. A fermentation issue caused the beer to be flawed, so the men of LMB made the tough choice monetarily, but the right choose for their customers and simply poured it out. Liquid Mechanics Brewing offers up great beers in an awesome atmosphere. Play board games, participate in Thursday night’s “Geeks who Drink” trivia, listen to live music on most Friday and Saturdays, order food from local restaurants and have it delivered to your seat, or go outside and eat from one of the many food trucks that stop by. If you’re lucky, you may even get to try one of their many smallbatch esoteric brews. This taproom is one to visit regularly. Check their website for updates on what’s on tap. Love for Lily Meet the Cahoons Article Emily O’Brien | Photography Lisa Doane
T
ed and Sahra Cahoon met in middle school while growing up in Los Gatos, California. They’re fairly confident they were 11 at the time, but didn’t date until college. The University of Colorado Boulder attracted them to Boulder County and they haven’t left since. From there they established deep roots in Colorado. Ted and Sahra married, and Sahra opened her own jewelry company, Swoon Jewelry Studio, in Boulder (now operating in Louisville.) Ted, a welder at Standard Metal Works in Boulder, is in an equally creative field. “We do what we love and live a lifestyle we love. We have an amazing community, and for that I am grateful,” explains Sahra regarding why they’ve stuck around. “We can both have balance, and I don’t think that you can get that everywhere.” The idea of living in Boulder County and raising a child go hand-in-hand to them. And so when Sahra became pregnant in 2011, she and Ted were beyond thrilled! But then the pregnancy quickly became rocky. At only 13 weeks, Sahra was ordered to stay on bed rest. And only 11 weeks after that (24 weeks gestation), Lily was born at The University of Colorado Hospital in Denver in late June. And while all ten fingers and toes were seemingly absolutely perfect, Lily was missing vital air sacks in her lungs, which made breathing incredibly challenging. After a lengthy three-and-ahalf month stay in the NICU, where the nurses became a second family and the hospital chairs became their own, Sahra and Ted finally took Lily home. Sadly Lily took an unexpected turn a few weeks later and passed away in their arms in early November. As they were coming to terms with the depths of their loss, they found themselves wondering why there wasn’t more support during their stay in the NICU. So they approached their friends one night—the same ones who were once their NICU nurses— and created a plan.

“My husband and I both craved support. We craved knowing other families that were going through this roller-coaster ride of a baby in the NICU,” states Sahra. The original meeting of Love for Lily was to create a simple celebration for Mother’s Day so that even though the mothers of preemies were in the hospital all day, they could still be celebrated. This event catapulted the first Love for Lily moms group the following month, a gathering where other NICU moms can sit down to eat while talking openly about their struggles. Coping skills are taught by a group facilitator. Meetings are held every week, alternating every other week between mom groups and family groups. “We want our program to be unlike any other, to provide space to come together with other families walking a similar path to yours, eat a meal and not feel alone,” states Sahra reflecting that all too often the NICU experience is isolating. The groups, the camaraderie of support they provide to help halt tough days from becoming a downward spiral, have become tremendously successful and are slated to open in a second location soon. And to add to the excitement, Sahra and Ted are expecting a second child in February! This pregnancy has been smooth from the start—a very different experience so far—with all tests indicating a healthy baby. If you’d like to get involved with Love For Lily or are interested in reading Sahra’s beautifully documented blog, visit LoveforLily.org. Way to help include donating your time or home-cooked meals or to make a monetary donation. Love for Lily also desperately needs bottled water for families. You can also purchase locally, handmade necklaces from the site, where 100 percent of the proceeds go back to the foundation.

Boulder County Giving Back Guide The Family-To-Family Holiday Program
Precious Gift
Boulder County Housing & Human Services Boulder County Housing & Human Services’ (BCHC) motto “Hope for the future, Help when you need it” represents its determination to place individual empowerment, family self-sufficiency and safety at the forefront of all its work. It forms partnerships with families by giving them the primary voice in decisions affecting their lives, knowing that support combined with empowerment fosters self-sufficiency. With that in mind, BCHC asks for your aid in supporting low-income clients by making a donation so they can receive gift cards this holiday season. Parents will relish the opportunity to purchase presents for their own children. And teens, disabled, and/or elderly adult clients will have an opportunity to shop for themselves. Donors can use the sum of $50 per person to gauge the maximum number of people to support.
The Precious Gift program at A Precious Child provides holiday gifts to children in need who would otherwise not receive one. Many of these children are facing life challenges such as abuse, neglect, homelessness and poverty. Its 2014 goal is to provide gifts to 6,500 underprivileged Colorado kids and they can’t do it alone! Precious Gift distributes the gifts to its agency partners throughout the Denver Metro Area, which include schools, Health and Human Services, churches, nonprofit organizations, foster homes, safe homes and homeless shelters. Help by organizing a Toy Drive, Adopting a Child by donating money or getting them something off their wish list or put on a fundraising event such as a bake sale or a simple office contest with funds going to the Precious Gift program!

Concertos in Chocolate
Sweets for the Sweetest Holiday Sweet Treats The Sweetest Chocolate Article Jules Marie | Photography Provided
B
oulder County Chocolatier’s award-winning confections are leaving their mark in the world of chocolate. Who can resist creamy caramels and gourmet truffles bursting with bold flavors and velvety goodness or decadent chocolate bars made with three ingredients: cacoa, sugar and passion? Concertos in Chocolate
Concertos in Chocolate blends new world flavors with Old World techniques. Owner Chris Widlar does an immense amount of hand work, including hand decorating with natural colors. After 15 years in the biz, Widlar believes she has settled on the formula for success, which rests on the all-important chocolate chosen for the product and unique flavor combinations Concertos uses Luker chocolate which has a strong earthy taste and is all natural and also Cacoa Barry, which has a very smooth mouth feel, according to Widlar. Concerto’s most popular products generally include caramel, salted caramels, turtles and turtle-tots. Consider the cappuccino caramel with caramel and espresso on the inside and espresso and finishing salt on the outside. Holiday items include a Rudolph 22

pop, a reindeer sucker complete with a pink nose; solid chocolate santas; and a five-inch tall solid chocolate moose. Concertos also makes truffles, English toffee, s’more bark, crisps, confections and bars. Widlar says they also offer readymade or custom gift baskets in every size and price. They do a booming corporate business by creating custom chocolate and labels for companies including the Stanley Hotel whose custom-printed labels sport images of friendly ghosts. Indulge in one of their masterpieces at their Gunpark Drive shop where visitors can see the entire kitchen and watch product being made. Treats can also be found at Whole Foods and Pharmaca, and online orders are carefully packed and shipped throughout the U.S. and Canada. Nova Monda Cacao and Chocolate
Andrew Starr owns award-winning Black Star Chocolates in Denver and recently purchased Nova Monda Cacao and Chocolate in Lafayette. “Nova liked what I did with my Black Star confections, and I liked their bars and truffles; the owner was moving on and wanted someone with passion for the business so

I bought it,” says Starr who’s been making confections since he was 10 years old but loves the purity of simple dark chocolate bars. Starr believes Nova Monda’s bars are the ultimate in simplicity and purity as he combines organic cacao with organic cane sugar allowing the subtleties of the cacao to come out. Nova Monda “I care deeply about the people who grow cacao for us and the way it’s grown and harvested,” says Starr whose direct-trade model allows them to source cacao from two shade-grown co-ops in Nicaragua and Ecuador. “We want to be sure the people growing the cacao are building something bigger than just a farm; they’re creating an industry and we talk openly with them about being sustainable,” says Starr. Look for Nova Monda artisan bars in Alfalfa’s and Natural Grocers and bars and sea salt almond truffles at local independent retailers. Products can also be purchased online and shipped nationally. Robin Chocolates
Robin Autorino is an award-winning artisanal chocolatier recently named one of the top 10 chocolatiers in North America. The shop boasts six grand champions including Dulcey Blonde—a soft caramel blended with dulce de leche liqueur layered with car-

amelized white chocolate ganache in a dark chocolate shell. Other champions include lemon soufflé, raspberry heart, mexican mole with habanero; orange spice caramel; lavender and pomegranate—a rich pomegranate ganache with a cardamom caramel layer. Autorino began in 2008 with the mission to produce the very best chocolates, confections and pastries using honest ingredients and time-tested techniques, and her Longmont shop is ablaze with confections of every size, variety and color. “Our confections are reminiscent of traditional f lavors. We use Valrhona chocolate from France: If you taste a plain piece of Valrhona dark chocolate and compare it to a similar percentage dark chocolate, you’ll discover the taste has more layers of complexity, more sensation in the mouth and a smooth mouth feel,” says Autorino. Robin Chocolates is also home to a pastry shop with an award-winning pastry chef who makes desserts that don’t let you down. Don’t miss the Salted caramel brownies and salted caramel cake or the caramel mousse, which won grand prize at the Denver Chocolate Festival. And finally, if you’ve never tasted chocolate caramel f leur de sel, well, it’s worth a trip to Longmont. Check the website for upcoming classes or to order product for nationwide delivery.

A Hostess’ Guide to Modern Day Do’s and Don’ts Article Kate Manz | Photography Molly Seeling
Photo Shoot Contributors: Cedar and Hyde mercantile Madelife Peppercorn
DON’T: Forget to send invitations out well in advance. The holiday season starts ahead of Thanksgiving and goes through Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Day. People have many social obligations through the season so your invitation should arrive so your guests have plenty of time to put you on their social calendar.
Fiori Flowers Cured Boulder
We asked three of Boulder’s top event planners to give us their take on modern day holiday party etiquette for both the host and the guest. Here are their list of do’s and don’ts.
Leah Colby LaDolcee Events / LaDolceeEventsBoulder.com
Heather Dwight Calluna Events/CallunaEvents.com GUEST DO: Check the dress code. Holiday par-
ties are a time for festive dress and pulling something fun out of the closet. Whether it’s black tie, holiday festive or casual make sure you do a double-check. You wouldn’t want to be that person that forgot to check the dress code for the Ugly Sweater party. DON’T: Assume kids are invited. Some holiday parties are kid-friendly while others are 24

for adults only. Be a gracious guest, and ask the host if it’s not clear on the invitation. You would hate to be the only guest who brought kids in tow when everyone else had found a babysitter for the night. HOST DO: Offer some non-alcoholic beverage options or set up Uber for your guests. With the holiday season being one of festive celebrations and imbibing you want to make sure your guests have safe choices. Some hosts are offering to cover the costs of Uber for their guests.
DON’T: Overcommit yourself this holiday
season. The holidays are known for being hectic, from multiple holiday parties to purchasing lists to having your own gatherings, so don’t over commit yourself because that will just stress you out. Plan out which events you are able to attend in advance, and try not to commit to more than one event per day. When we overcommit and stress, our body’s immune system gets weaker and we want you healthy, and happy during the holidays! continued >

Home Matters

DO: Be sure to mingle with new faces. When at a holiday party, be
sure to mingle with other guests. Even if you don’t know anyone, introduce yourself to the person standing in line next to you at the bar. Being friendly sets the tone of the party and allows others to loosen up. And who knows, you may even make a new friend! Host DO: Be sure to delegate one person to help you at the party. You
will be extremely busy greeting guests and running around the evening of your party, so be sure to hire someone or ask a friend who is not a guest to be your eyes of the party for the evening. Have this person check on food and beverages throughout the
evening and do a bit of picking up after guests. This will help you make sure that you are out of the kitchen and mingling with your guests and not stressed during the party. DON’T: Overthink it. Oftentimes we are so set on making everything for the party perfect that we go overboard with getting our house ready and agonizing over what to make or serve. Don’t over think it! No matter what your guests will have a great time and appreciate having been invited over for your party. No need to go out and re-design your home or make everything by hand. Buy pre-made food if needed or hire a caterer. Just tidy up, but no need to go and get new fixtures and curtains just because you are having some guests! ers on time and many will likely be fashionably late. Stationary food items like a cheese and charcuterie platter are your best friends as you are busy playing bartender, small-talker, greeter, table-setter, dishwasher and more. Encourage your guests loosen up with some self-service wine or bubbles, and help them to get to know each other over brie and salumi before being seated for dinner.

GUEST DO: Be a gracious guest. When someone invites you over as a guest, never arrive empty-handed. Not to say that you need to spend a fortune but think of a personal gift that the hosts will enjoy. You can (almost) never go wrong with a bottle of wine but this is an opportunity to think outside the box. Does your host love coffee? Why not snag a bag of locally roasted coffee? Or, maybe your holiday hosts have been hankering for a trip to Italy? Treat them to a cooking class for two or a beautifully packaged bottle of fine Italian olive oil. After the party, make sure to follow up with a thank you note (email is nice, but hand-written is better). DON’T: Assume you get a "Plus One."Oftentimes events are charged on a per-person basis, so make sure you know exactly who is invited to the party. While it may be more comfortable for you to bring your date / partner / spouse, it is not always assumed that they are invited. Don't be scared to ask the host for clarification on the invitation. HOST DO: Consider dietary restrictions. In today's world of gluten-free,
dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc., it is important to be an educated host. Rather than take it upon yourself to "experiment" with guests' allergies, be a courteous host and ask your guests about any dietary restrictions before they are seated for dinner. With that said, don't feel pressure to prepare a special meal for each person but make sure options are available and guests feel attended to. DON'T: Skimp on the appetizers. Some guests will arrive early, oth26

5 Rules of Holiday Etiquette You Can Skip Teaching (Not Bother to Teach?) Your Children Article Ellen Nordberg
O
ver the course of twelve Decembers trying to instill Emily Post-worthy behavior in my identical twin boys, I’ve seen many of my holiday manners tutorials come back to bite me. Here are my top five lessons to avoid: 5. Answer the Door to Grown Ups Like a Big Boy. You will tell your child to first identify the person at the door. You will instruct him to shake hands and look the visitor in the eye, greeting them appropriately, like: “Hello, Mr. Claus,” or “Nice to see you, Mrs. Kravits.” This may result in you exiting the shower one afternoon to hear the doorbell, and then the sound of your least social neighbors inviting your family to their Super Bowl party. Trapped in a tiny towel, you will overhear your son’s response: “Thank you so much Mr. and Mrs. Sherman, but we have so many other friends and party invitations, I don’t think we’ll make it!” 4. Always Write Thank You Notes. With your grandmother’s long ago expectations in mind, you will encourage your children to create pieces of art, adorned with elf hat wearing alligators, and charmingly misspelled words. They will be so enthusiastic about expressing gratitude, they will hand deliver notes as fast as they can write them. This will backfire when they make a delivery to the neighborhood Debbie Fields holiday baker, expressing appreciation for her cheesecake, and informing her that they did not sample it because you told them “it was gross.” 3. Tidy Up Before Hosting Guests. Your boys will be taught to pick up their Legos, tuck away their trains, and place balls in their baskets. But even on a day with flying pigs, this will not
happen. Ten minutes before your party you will scream at them in a Wizard of Oz witch voice, chuck every toy they own into your husband’s office, then lock the door and wrap it with festive yellow caution tape. 2. Sit Quietly with Hands Folded in Lap During Church. Your children will learn to sit on opposite sides of their father, silently coloring the Poinsettias on the program, or counting the stained glass windows. They will be still briefly. This this will explode one Christmas Eve, partway through the Nativity Pageant. One of your boys will shout, “You know what this show needs?” to the horror of the priest and your mother-in-law, and the delight of all parents within ear shot. “It needs some sheep!” 1. Behave Appropriately While Holiday Shopping. Your own mother didn’t include little ones in tree trimming, so you will enthusiastically escort your boys into a crowded Sur La Table store in December, instructing them to calmly select an ornament of their choice. While you smugly examine table runners, congratulating yourself on superior holiday parenting, one boy will call loudly across the crowd from the rear of the store. “Mom! Hey Mom!” he will say. “This one looks like a margarita glass. We should get it for you. You love margaritas!” Despite these failures, I refuse to stop teaching manners to my children. But we may need to email our thank you messages, keep the door locked, and start shoveling neighbors’ driveways for free. Read more by Ellen at ellen@ellennordberg.com.
