oulder County has long been known for design and architectural prominence. The diversity and differentiating home styles are as unique as the residents of our great community. As the son of a custom homebuilder, I developed a love for excellence in craftsmanship and home design. Growing up on a lake in the Midwest, my "interior" design preferences were: brown, lots of wood, animal heads, more brown and more wood. I also appreciated stonework.
Most all of the houses on our lake were either renovated original homes from the 1930's and 1940's, or new builds that resembled classic "lake home" style. In the early 2000's, an old house across the lake was scrapped and up goes this white and grey box with windows. The first "modern" design home on Lake Lotawana was being built and I was NOT having it. How dare someone come change the landscape of my beloved lake where our family had laid roots some 70 years prior. I bet that house didn't have a single dead animal on the wall. The homeowner probably did not know how to drive a boat, or water ski , or sail.

My best friend Austin, (now brother in law) was attending the architecture program at CU during the construction of Captain Kirk's storage shed. "Dude, that house is siiiiiick!" Austin was obviously ahead of the game at this point. It took me moving to Boulder, but I came around. Now I am a HUGE fan of modern and contemporary design. While I'll always have a special place in my heart for puffy leather furniture and taxidermy, I'm definitely all in on the limits that are being pushed with Boulder's design pioneers.

Around Town VAN DER JAGT LAW FIRM WINS TORCH AWARD FOR MARKETPLACE TRUST Congratulations to Culver Van Der Jagt, the owner of Van Der Jagt Law Firm, for winning BBB’s 2014 Torch Award for Marketplace Trust in Special Recognition for A Community Advocate! The fact that his firm also was recognized by the BBB for Marketplace Trust out of all small businesses in the Denver Boulder area certainly caught our attention, as winning one of these awards, much less being recognized for leadership in two different categories is incredibly noteworthy. Culver Van Der Jagt and his law firm have made it their mission to break the cycle of violence in our community. The firm claims to have found a way to break the cycle of domestic violence in a way that is truly unique. Through close work with local shelters, the firm has created a clear presence in the community for its work, and a remarkable pattern of apparent success that is being recognized by the organizations.

RUNNING REALLY CAN KEEP YOU YOUNG, SAYS CU-BOULDER-HUMBOLDT STUDY If you are an active senior who wants to stay younger, keep on running. A new study involving the University of Colorado Boulder and Humboldt State University shows that senior citizens who run several times a week for exercise expend about the same amount of energy walking as a typical 20 year old.
14
Boulder County Lifestyle | January 2015
But older people who walk for exercise rather than jog expend about the same amount of energy walking as older, sedentary adults, and expend up to 22 percent more energy walking than the 20-something crowd. The study, led by Humboldt State Professor Justus Ortega, was published online Nov. 20 in the journal PLOS ONE. “The bottom line is that running keeps you younger, at least in terms of energy efficiency,” says CU-Boulder Associate Professor Rodger Kram of the Department of Integrative Physiology, a co-author on the new study.

he beauty of vintage is rarity and exclusivity. It’s about the prospect of a deal, backstory and of course, bragging rights. Z Davis Robinson, knew this all too well as a lover of all things vintage. He knew how to carefully choose vintage objects. It wasn’t until he and his wife Mary Ann were ready to turn their hobby into a dream that Curating The Cool was born. “I wanted to start something of my own, and I decided it should be something we love,” says Z, of opening April 2013. “The only criteria for something to be in the shop, is that I think it is cool. It makes the shop unique, and allows me to be surrounded by things I love.” People from all over Boulder County are catching onto the “cool” too, with much praise and recognition from many that also share the love for things vintage and local. One of the things that Z loves most about his shop and location is the community and bringing “cool” to his customers. After living in Boulder when first relocat-
ing here from Oklahoma, they now have found “home” in Lafayette. They have grabbed onto the energy in this small town and helped it grow. “We love the people in Lafayette, and we are excited to be a part of the amazing changes taking place,” states Z. The shop contains everything from rare and vintage trinkets and mid-century furniture, to locally made soaps and jewelry. There’s also a good mix of art, local and high-end pieces. They have created an environment where shopping becomes an experience and emotional reward. “Seeing someone’s face light up when they see a long lost treasure or watching someone have a quiet moment in front of a piece of local art makes every day amazing,” says Z. They are constantly evolving the store because “cool” is ever changing. “As styles change and brands come and go, the shop will reflect that, “ he says. Right now they carry several local products in their store. To name a few, Hot
butter wallets, Rock and Stone bracelets and Mod Cabin Beard oil, all made locally in Lafayette. Spinster Sisters have been a popular seller as well, out of Golden. The Curator has come a long way since opening in 2013 with their 400-squarefoot space off Public Rd. They had overwhelming support from the community they had to move into a bigger space, just three doors down. “I can put a lot more “cool” into our current shop now,” Robinson says of upgrading to the 1,700-square-foot space, in which they occupy 1,300 themselves. Z had an idea to curate other cool businesses under one roof about six months ago, and since then, they have introduced The Shoppers @ Curating the Cool. Assorted Goods and Candy opened their second location within the store, as well as J. Morley Jewelry. Both are great additions to the Cool. “When you have a shop that is an expression of yourself, it is hard to have a bad day,” explains Z. January 2015 | Boulder County Lifestyle

When I first spoke with the editors about ideas for this feature, I figured I’d be styling a local home, taking it from good to great. This was before I saw the photos of the Harriman family’s Lafayette home. Quite clearly, the owners of this 2003 A-Frame home didn’t need my help. They have a distinct style identity and present it in just the right way, including: 1. Balancing of bold design choices with neutral elements. 2. Incorporating their personal identities into the decor. 3. Combining different styles into an eclectic yet cohesive presentation. 4. Bringing an editing eye into each room so that it all works. This feature discusses some of what they did so well, and how you can apply it to your own home.

A tablescape is how items (books, candles, flowers, boxes, coasters, etc.) are artfully arranged on a table, and it’s so important to finishing off a room’s look. BABY STEPS: Tablescapes can take some real practice to get just right, so start small with a beautiful candle atop your favorite coffee table book on one side of the table, an orchid on the other.

BIG STYLE:
Pairing the traditional furnishings (matching table and chairs, breakfront) with bold walls and crisp white trim keeps this formal room fun and young. BABY STEPS: Keep walls neutral and paint the picture rail a daring shade.

inter skin care solutions abound thanks to Rebecca’s Herbal Apothecary, Pangea Organics, Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care and NAYA Organics. These companies pride themselves on using wholesome ingredients to create body-loving products that are luxurious, effective and eco-conscious. Gone are the days of fillers, colors and preservatives as these pampering products sport a variety of seemingly edible ingredients.
Rebecca’s Herbal Apothecary est. 2004, Boulder, CO Rebecca Luna’s bustling herbal apothecary at 12th and Spruce St. in downtown Boulder is a testimony to her belief that people want access to the highest-quality botanical medicine and products available. Rebecca’s Herbal Apothecary and Supply sells raw materials and artfully-crafted body care products made in small batches on site and all bearing Rebecca’s logo. The apothecary shelves are loaded with an extensive assortment of roots, leaves, herbs, flowers, tea blends, oils and all the ingredients needed to make personalized oils, lotions, toners and even room sprays. This popular service offers customers a chance to create their own products with a few drops of their favorite oils, rather than investing in several bottles of precious essential oils. “It’s all about oil, inside and outside. Oil is the key to life. Oil, water, air, laughter. I think oil is everything,” says Luna who suggests adding essential oils to your favorite carrier oil, such as jojoba or apricot kernel oil and slathering it on the body. Essential oils can be calming, soothing or uplifting as their unique scents evoke a multitude of feelings. Rosehip seed Rebeccas Luna

essential oil is nutrient rich, high in essential fatty acids and soothing to the skin. Mango butter is highly emollient and shea butter locks in moisture with its buttery texture.
Pangea Organics est. 2001, Boulder, CO Award-winning Pangea Organics is known for selling unpolluted beauty. Founder Joshua Scott Onysko started his business based on soap he made from oatmeal, olives, coconut, hemp, soy and essential oils. His goal to create a business that would benefit everyone involved has succeeded and today, Pangea Organics offers an Organic Loyalty Program which allows members to receive discounts and additional benefits on facial, body and lip care products. Onysko’s belief that there are more chemicals in body care products than in most hardware stores combined with the fact that bodies absorb whatever we put on them, led him to create products in small batches using pure, organic ingredients. Onysko startled fans with his early use of biodegradable packaging materials infused with seeds which could be wet and then planted to grow flowers, herbs or even a tree. Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care est. 1986, Hygiene, CO
NAYA Organics est. 2006, Boulder, CA
A seventh generation farmer, Lily Morgan painstakingly handcrafts farm fresh skin care products at her farm in Hygiene, Colorado. Her unique farm-to-bottle-to-shelf business model is unique as Morgan is triple certified as a USDA-certified organic grower, crafting certified organic products in her own certified organic laboratory. Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care was founded with the ideal that the highest-quality, most effective and safest skin care products contain organic and locally grown ingredients. Morgan develops products with ingredients chosen and grown specifically to improve the skin’s texture and appearance. Lily Farm Fresh Calming Facial Toner was selected for the 2014 Beauty With a Conscience Award and the Nourishing Facial Cleanser won Delicious Living’s 2013 Beauty & Body Awards. Morgan suggests her allergen-free Calming Moisture Cream with minimal ingredients or the Rejuvenating Seven Oil Treatment with its rich combination of oils of primrose, rosehip seed, lavender, avocado, almond, kukui and vitamin E, all readily absorbed by the skin. Or give the rejuvenating Honey Papaya Pineapple Enzyme Mask a try as it elevates dry skin to a whole new level of moisture.
NAYA Artisan Revival Skin Care was founded by Kelsey Lynn Riley whose love of herbs and essential oils led her to create unique, sophisticated skincare products. Riley’s small-batch skin care production allows her to craft sustainable and ethical products with fresh plant and food-based ingredients. Her philosophy of ‘less is more’ shines with the use of glass bottles, biodegradable labels and boxes stuffed with recycled paper and wood shavings from a local artist. Consider Black Cherry Lip Balm—yum, with only coconut oil, cacao butter, beeswax and vitamin E. Or try the Almond Ginger or Coffee Orange Body Scrub sure to leave your body tingling. NAYA offers classes on how to create beauty care products with ingredients at the grocery store. Visit her site for simple home recipes for facial cleansers, masks, lip balm and more.

New Year. New You. MAKING YOUR WORLD A BETTER PLACE, ONE DECISION AT A TIME ARTICLE JORDAN LEBOWITZ
H
ow many New Year’s resolutions have you made? How many have you kept? Is the answer to the first question more than one? Is the answer to the second question zero? Change for self-improvement is a difficult task no matter what self-imposed start date or deadline is involved. Perhaps, the thought of, “I have to do this starting now,” is enough for our own human nature to kick in and disagree, “no I don’t, who are you to tell me what to do?” Often, change only occurs when someone is truly ready, making the struggle to adapt less arduous. People don’t like to be forced into anything. We like to make up our own minds. Everyone should think for themselves, and that’s exactly where change begins…with thought.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline is not a four-letter word, and even if it were, it certainly doesn’t deserve the negative connotation which engulfs it. Discipline is simply sticking to something. Sticking to something – granted that “something” be positive in nature – is the only way to move forward and reach any kind of accomplishment. While it wouldn’t be true to say that nothing good has ever come without a disciplined approach, it sure does seem that way. No matter what resolution you made this year, simply attack the change(s) one decision at a time. Each decision made in the right direction will hopefully enable more decisions to be made within the confines of your goal. Eventually, the new way of making decisions will take hold of your character and you will become it. You can become healthy! You can become a non-smoker! You can become debt-free! We become what we are by repeating the same thoughts, words and actions over and over again. Making one good decision at a time can become a disciplined way of reprogramming yourself. NEED SOME HELP? THERES AN APP FOR THAT!
11 Most Common New Year’s Resolutions and Apps to Help You Achieve Them: 01/LOSE WEIGHT AND GET FIT – MapMyFitness: From running maps to gym workouts, track all of your exercise routines. 02/QUIT SMOKING – MyQuitCoach: Dare to quit smoking mobile app. 03/ LEARN SOMETHING NEW – Duolingo: Learn a language for free! 24

06/SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY – Chronos: See how you are spending your time without lifting a finger. 07/TRAVEL TO NEW PLACES - Packingpro: Fill in general information about your trip and receive a list of essential and recommended items to pack. 08/BE LESS STRESSED – Stress Tracker: Helps manage stress and promote physical and mental wellbeing. 09/VOLUNTEER – Volunteer Match: Giving is a gift and this app helps you find opportunities to give back within your area. 10/DRINK LESS – DRINKCONTROL: Tracks and converts your alcohol intake while providing moderate drinking guidelines. 11/ENJOY LIFE MORE – MOMENT: Enjoying life is all about being present, hence the name. This app tracks how much time you spend on your phone and other gadgets, so you can cut down on tech time. RESOLVE TO DO MORE OF WHAT’S AROUND
I challenge you to a very doable and enjoyable New Year’s resolution. We live in an amazing place that people from all over the globe visit for vacation, adventure and cuisine. The challenge I’m extended to our readers is for you to go out and experience more of Colorado. Sit down with your family or significant other and make a list of 12 new experiences you’ll have in this coming year. One for each month. Mix your choices between hobbies you know you enjoy and new activities you want to try. Include food, art, history, sports and adventure. Here are a few ideas to get you started, that are close to home. • Hike Mount Sanitas: This moderate to difficult trail is close to town, delivers amazing views and provides a great workout. • Patronize the Dushanbe Teahouse: From 1987 -1990, more than 40 artisans in several cities of Tajikistan created the decorative elements of this truly unique Teahouse. • Tube Boulder Creek: Grab a helmet and rubber tube, hold on for the ride! • Drive the Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway in the fall: Enjoy fall colors while viewing the Continental Divide. • Visit National Parks: Visit a new park each year. Camp, make a day trip or rent a cabin. • See a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre: Bands dream of playing this venue. • Go Whitewater Rafting: Fun for the whole family with a myriad of options on where to go. • Visit Craft Breweries: Colorado has a lot of delicious craft beer. Please visit our Facebook page and share your ideas on local destinations that every Coloradoan should experience at least once.
