A ROAD LESS TRAVELED BREWS + ART AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT

Editor’s Letter

The art around us. O

ne does not have to be an art connoisseur to know that the definition of the word has endless meanings. Art is all around us…from the walls of a prestigious gallery, to the walls of my 3-year-old's room after hijacking the magic markers. Boulder has long been a breeding ground of many diverse artists. In the same regard, the mystique of the Flatirons has drawn in accomplished artisans from all over the world. Many of these transplants now permanently call Boulder home.

When it comes to art, it’s about making it your own. It’s not about being right or wrong or following a certain path or formula. I learn this lesson best from my kids’ spontaneity and care free spirits. As Pablo Picasso very truly stated, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

NEW SPACE TELESCOPE CONCEPT COULD IMAGE OBJECTS AT FAR HIGHER RESOLUTION THAN HUBBLE University of Colorado Boulder researchers will update NASA officials next week on a revolutionary space telescope concept selected by the agency for study last June that could provide images up to 1,000 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. CU-Boulder Professor Webster Cash said the instrument package would consist of an orbiting space telescope and an opaque disk in front of it that could be up to a half mile across. According to Cash, diffracted light waves from a target star or other space object would bend around the edges of the disk and converge in a central point. That light would then be fed into the orbiting telescope to provide high-resolution images. The new telescope concept could allow scientists to image space objects like black hole “event horizons” and plasma swaps between stars, says Cash. The novel telescope system also could point toward Earth and image objects as small as a rabbit, giving it the ability to hunt for lost campers in the mountains.

The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department has begun repairs to the Sanitas Valley Trail, which sustained significant damage from the 2013 floods. OSMP has closed the Sanitas Valley Trail, except for two small segments that connect with other trails, as the department re-grades and resurfaces the flood-damaged trail, and completes drainage repairs. The Mount Sanitas, East Ridge, Goat and Dakota Ridge trails will remain open during the trail repairs. Heavy equipment will be used in some of the

areas that remain open, and visitors should exercise caution while accessing those areas. OSMP will reopen the Sanitas Valley Trail when the repair efforts are completed, which is expected to occur in May.

BOULDER COUNTY AWARDS FUNDING FOR ZERO WASTE PROGRAMS The Board of County Commissioners awarded $50,000 to eight waste-reduction programs as part of the Resource Conservation Division’s zero waste funding programs for 2015. Zero Waste Funding initiatives provide an opportunity for businesses, organizations and individuals within the community to contribute to Boulder County’s longterm vision of moving toward Zero Waste. Boulder County is encouraging the development of programs with an emphasis on demonstrated resource diversion (new tons diverted from disposal) for businesses, residents and governmental buildings. This funding, established in 1997, has awarded a total of more than $989,000 to more than 191 entities representing the whole of Boulder County and Broomfield. This year’s awards should push the 24year total over $1 million awarded to nearly 200 recipients.

Concrete Pete NOT ALL ART IS CONCRETE BUT CONCRETE CAN BE ART ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY BRAD TORCHIA

P

eter Zoller is the innovative designer and founder of Concrete Pete, a Boulder-based business specializing in eco-friendly concrete furniture, countertops, fireplaces and other architectural designs. The entire design and building process is done by hand-from step one of building the mold, to the final stages of casting, curing and processing each piece. “I love the problem solving that goes along with combining materials in new and creative ways,” says Zoller. Zoller is a self-taught designer and combines raw materials, such as steel and reclaimed wood, with concrete. “Lately I have been inspired by using ‘live edge’ wood in a lot of my pieces. I love the contrast of the warm organic wood against the edgier sleek concrete. Context and material plays a powerful role in the design and function of an object,” says Zoller. Each project is one of a kind, and furnishes many Boulder County homes and beyond with a touch of modern elegance combined with functionality. Concrete is his medium of choice due to its high moldability, wide array of colors and endless amount of design possibilities. Most importantly, concrete is environmentally friendly, unlike granite. And as a climber and outdoor enthusiast, it’s important for Zoller to have a positive, green impact. “As a long-time rock climber in the Boulder area, I take a lot of my inspiration from nature. I feel there is great beauty in the imperfection of natural materials,” says Zoller. By education, Zoller has a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. After working in the pharmacy field for some time, he was inspired to start Concrete Pete after helping a friend pour his own kitchen counters. From then on, his aspirations to create and work with his hands became a reality. For 10 years running, he has been creating designs for commercial projects and homes.     CONCRETEPETE LLC

Everyday Luxuries AT VILLE DE LUX BOUTIQUE ARTICLE JULES MARIE

V

ille de Lux Boutique, conveniently located on Louisville’s Main Street, is housed in the original home of the town’s first medical doctor. Though many have occupied the small dwelling over the past 100 years, none have displayed the lure and charm of Ville de Lux. Owned by mother-daughter team, Irene Oliver and Kara Reese, the shop is what Reese likes to think of as offering distinctive and desirable clothing, accessories and gifts for women. A spin around the store reveals treasures from Paris and Bali, alongside local riches, including upcycled lamps made in Denver. Reese prides herself on offering a carefully curated selection of items. “I look for gifts that are local, vintage and handmade. We just brought in repurposed lamps made with tea cups and found objects, and we love them. We also carry many specialty clothing items you won’t find elsewhere,” says Reese. Fan-favorites include the flirty and feminine collection from Camellia Clothing, as well as the Charlotte Tarantola brand featuring bold prints, vibrant colors, jewels, lace, beading and sequins—a line Reese loves for their outstanding details. Minor renovations after a large and fun sale gave Ville de Lux a chance to freshen up the interior and inventory. Check out the head turning clothing collection from Dunia—hand-crafted on the island of Bali. Dunia’s flowing fabrics are cool and comfortable, and the 100 percent cotton-gauze collection is loved for its distinct, signature dyes and unique use of tucks, layers, gathers and soutach. Reese also carries clothing from the California-based company, Three Dots, that began with three sizes, 12 colors, inspired designs and fastidious construction and was an instant success. Today, the extended line of lifestyle clothing includes breezy, delicate and fashionable styles. “We’ll be celebrating our 8th year here in October. Our vintage jewelry and gifts, and the fact we carry handmade or locally-made, as well as Parisian and European gifts, clothing and accessories, makes our store a destination shop for the many people who visit Louisville. I want our customers to feel like they walked into a European boutique,” says Reese, who draws inspiration from other boutique owners. Visit the shop Tuesday through Saturday at 909 Main St. in historic downtown Louisville, CO or find them at VilleDeLux.com.

armony Larke, art director at The Art Underground, fills us in on the exciting new building plans for Louisville’s very own “Art Village.” The Art Underground is a non-profit organization that offers classes and programs in theatre, dance and various visual art mediums for all ages. Larke has been teaching art in the Boulder area for more than 20 years and operated 27 art camps throughout Boulder County last summer. The new building development – dubbed an “Arts Village” - is the result of collaboration between Boulder County and a couple of Louisville arts organizations. The “Art Village” will have a 210-seat theatre, studios, galleries and living spaces for low-income residents. One of the most unique aspects of the building will be the addition of a full-time, year round, art-based preschool, which is set to open in 2016. The preschool is private, but it will also allow for a percentage of low-income families to enroll each year. “The preschool will be hands-on, allowing kids to work at their own pace and get messy. We will explore with all different kinds of materials and mediums. The kids will have a masterpiece to take home and share every day,” explains Larke. The Art Underground focuses on sharing the best and most beneficial aspects of the arts by providing quality instructors, age appropriate instruction, constant curriculum development, real audiences and a commitment to nurturing creativity. Check TAU’s website for upcoming performances, one day classes for kids during spring break and summer camp schedules.

W

hen Don Wilson, founder of the Left Hand Artist Group, retired and moved from California to Colorado, he imagined for the first time in his life working full time on the art he loves. Instead, Wilson finds himself immersed in something much larger than his personal passion for art. He finds himself immersed in a community’s passions as well. Now Wilson’s mission is to, “make Longmont an art mecca, like Austin, Texas, is to music.” The journey began when Wilson first attempted to sell his art in the Boulder area. Galleries demanded high monthly showing fees and commissions, making it difficult for any amateur artist to break through. Wilson had a solution. “I started creating my own art events. The overhead was still about the same as a monthly gallery fee--for food and everything-- but I got more satisfaction out of it, and I actually sold a couple pieces,” Wilson explains. The next month Wilson held another event at his home. This time he invited other artists to show their pieces, too. The monthly exhibits grew rapidly, and his last show featured 18 artists and 76 pieces of art. As the turnout increased, so did the overhead, and Wilson believed it may have been time to shut it down. Fortunately, people didn’t want him to stop. “They offered to buy wine, beer and make it a pot luck,” Wilson explains. “Musicians played for free… it became a large community. A lot of this started at Left Hand Brewery, a great place to meet people and talk about your interests.” Once the shows could no longer be contained at Wilson’s home, he held a charity event at the Left Hand Brewery. Soon after that, a Longmont business, Instant Imprints, let him use their loft space for free. That’s when the Left Hand Artist Group was created. Today, the Left Hand Artist Group has 214 members that includes musicians, artists (visual), poets, spoken word performers and standup comedians. Anyone that wants to show their art can join the group. There is no fee to join the group, and only 10 percent commission on sales is required in order to fund future shows. Wilson invites any artist with interest to attend his noon meetings on the first Sunday of every month at Left Hand Brewery to have a free pint of beer and learn about the group. Find the Left Hand Artist Group on Facebook for information about future events and how to support them (Kickstarter campaign coming soon), as they aim to become a non-profit organization with their own gallery. More than Music Local documentary encourages aspiring musicians to Carry The Tune ARTICLE BRIAN ROSE

W

hether your student is the next Taylor Swift, or they are more likely to sing solos in the privacy of their car, one thing certain is that we are all impacted by music. Studies prove that learning a musical instrument at a young age not only develops our memory, hearing and coordination skills, but it also teaches kids self-discipline and attentiveness. However, Roger Mantie, a music professor at Boston University, conducted a fascinating study, which revealed that 75 percent of students give up playing music after high school. Orchestra teacher, Paul Trapkus, at Silver Creek High School in Longmont, Co., was so moved by that research that it inspired him, along with a group of his high school music students, to film a documentary called Carry The Tune. One of the high school students, Elizabeth Potter, who also co-directed the film, wanted to inspire her peers to continue pursuing the art of music after high school. “I have always loved music since I was a kid, but I didn’t think I would go anywhere with it until we started filming this documentary. I realized that I wanted music to be a big part of my life. Now I want to major in violin performance,” Elizabeth says. Carry The Tune is very critical of the paths high school students are presented with, which focus primarily on financial success and not necessarily what students are passionate about. “This is a documentary on the benefits it will have on you if you continue music after high school. The great thing about music is it doesn’t have to compete with your other interests, but it only enhances them,” Paul says. Carry The Tune is creatively captured and brilliantly high22

lights a challenge we all face: the endeavor to balance our work with our passions. You walk away from the film with the confidence that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to begin learning an instrument. Elizabeth says, “I would love for my peers to realize that you don’t have to major in music to continue to develop in your musical talent. There are so many other options. This documentary helps answer the why and how questions for students who want to continue to do music after high school.” Carry The Tune, will be released on DVD in March.
