The Holidays are Here!
Rachel Chrisman
It’s hard to believe we’re here in the midst of the holiday season already! I love the excitement in the air and anticipation of Christmas. On the following pages, you’ll find inspiration for giving in our gift guide, where we’ve picked a few of our favorites from local shops. Once you’re shopping is done and it’s time to wrap, try adding a personal touch to your presents by making salt dough gift tags and ornaments. We’ve included the how to’s in this issue. I remember making salt dough ornaments as a child with my mother, and still have some today. My favorite thing to do in anticipation of the holidays is to decorate our home. In this issue, we asked designer Jessica Merryweather Pollard, whose home, gift and design shop Merryweather is in The Box Factory, for fun new ideas to make your home festive this season. To really get inspired, visit her store for exceptional decorating and gift ideas. To make your holiday entertaining easy, check out our “Holiday Food Hacks” story for time-saving shortcuts that look and taste impressive. Guests will never know you cheated! As this year comes to a close, we at Bend Lifestyle are grateful to you, our readers. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. I wish you a heart-filled holiday season with meaningful connections and much joy.

UNIQUE AND INSPIRING DECORATING TIPS FROM JESSICA MERRYWEATHER POLLARD
H O L I D AY S
Jessica Merryweather Pollard offers holiday decorating tips to make your home festive this season.
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAILE MASON PHOTOGRAPHY

When Jessica Merryweather Pollard opened her home, gift and design store in the summer of 2020, she focused on creating a place where people could find something that expressed their unique tastes. Over two years later, Pollard continues to encourage customers to think outside the box when they come into her store, Merryweather, located in Bend’s Box Factory. With the holidays coming, she especially wants to promote decorating in a style that incorporates the traditional with the unexpected. In order to keep a sense of continuity in the décor, Pollard advises choosing a color palette and carrying that theme throughout the house. This way, from the time you and your guests walk up to the front door, then walk into the living room, the dining room and possibly the powder room, everything feels connected. Here she gives us some ideas on how to make your home festive and fun this holiday season.
A new trend is using neutral tones, including design elements in shades of cream, taupe and gray. Adding decorative pillows and throws in complementary shades can add festive touches throughout your home.
FRONT OF HOME/PORCH If you have a pot that you keep flowers in during the summer, transition that into a holiday theme using white or natural colored sticks with a mix of evergreens and even feathers. “I usually do evergreen and juniper, but I’ve also used red sticks that come off my crab apple tree,” Pollard says. “On the front door, you could do a swag or a wreath,” Pollard explains, “but I like to do greens around the border of my door and then add some fun color using ornaments and lightweight outdoor bulbs.”
LIVING ROOM Most Christmas trees go in the living room, so the tree is going to be the focal point. The tree is also going to set the tone for how you’re going to decorate the rest of the room. You can go the traditional route of reds, greens, creams, golds and silvers, or follow the trend of super neutral. “A new trend is do have a white tree with lots of cream, taupe and gray ornaments,” says Pollard. “If you're going to really kick it up and go kind of modern, it's really fun to do navy blues, hot pinks and citrus. So, first decide how you want to decorate your tree.” If there's a fireplace with a mantle, your next step would be to connect the mantle to the tree using the same colors. If you're going traditional, you could use evergreens on the mantle, but if you’re going more neutral, you could use a pinecone swag or a feather garland - something that's more browns and creams. Add candles in whatever colors you have going on with the tree. “On the sofa or chairs, you can add fun holiday pillows such as the Christmas Tree Trimmers design by Coral & Tusk (shown at right) which uses a linen foundation with embroidery on it,” CONTINUED >

demonstrates Pollard. Merryweather also carries other festive holiday pillows to add to your collection. On your coffee table, try using a tray that has a winter arrangement with candles, or fill a bowl with wooden acorns (shown in photos of table setting). “There’s a really nice gold on the cap part of the acorns,” Pollard adds. ”Whatever color palette you do choose, you want to repeat the color at least three times in the room,” states Pollard. “I call it a three-point connection.”
DINING ROOM It's fun to dress up the dining room table with a table runner, and you can find them in all different colors and textures. “One of my favorites, Christmas Cheer, is a winter woodland design with a bear, fox, reindeer and hedgehog on it,” Pollard says. “It’s absolutely gorgeous and whimsical.” There are reds, greens, oranges and browns, which are very pretty and not the typical

green and red plaid. You can then have your plates and napkins bring out some of the colors that are in that runner. Be creative. “We sell a great candle holder you can put on your table or sideboard that you can fill with a mix of candles, pinecones or evergreens,” notes Pollard. “Again, think outside the box.” “We also have African Zulu baskets that are all very neutral and you can mix in things you already have in your house with something like marble Christmas trees and make it very organic,” Pollard states.
POWDER ROOM Merryweather also has beautiful hand towels. Have fun dressing up your powder room with holiday themed towels. Don’t forget to add a pine scented candle to complete the room. “There are many creative things to do. It doesn't always have to be classic greens and reds,” Pollard remarks. “Hopefully, this gives you some new and fresh ideas.” Merryweather.Shop

heartfelt holiday gifts ARTICLE BY LEANN PARKER
Old Fashioned Salt Dough Gift Tags - Old Traditions with Modern Day Trends Our Gift Guide for this holiday season features specially chosen gift ideas from local shops to make your holiday shopping simple and support our local business owners. We also included ideas that offer experiences and opportunities for the whole family for the whole year, gifts that keep on giving. Enjoy your gift giving experience and personalize your gifts, whether in a box or envelope, by adding handcrafted gift wrap, perhaps recycling brown paper grocery bags turned inside out and adding festive ribbons and bows. Once you settle on that perfect gift, these salt dough gift tags with letter stamps can personalize your gift and be used for years to come as ornaments or decorations. Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments and gift tags. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.
Salt Dough Recipe
*Makes about 12 ornaments Supplies Needed • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet • Parchment Paper • Lettered Stamps • Acrylic Sealer • Bakers Twine Ingredients • 1 cup All Purpose White Flour • ½ cup Table Salt • ½ cup Water (give or take) • 4oz White Acrylic Paint Step-By-Step 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick. 3. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. 4. Place ornaments on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 5. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. 6. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags. For more DIY’s and seasonal styling ideas, visit me at silvertoothhome.com. Happy Holidays! Simple Holiday Food Hacks Time-saving tips help turn store bought items into impressive holiday fare ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks that look impressive but are simple to create. If you don't have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn't look store bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joe's and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

Holiday Charcuterie Board Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman. It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top. CONTINUED >

New York Cheesecake This inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at Trader Joe's but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest. Apple Tart This apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box, however adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel added color add a homemade touch to this delicious treat. This double creme brie with truffles from Trader Joe’s can be dressed up with berries, candied pecans and a drizzle.
A charcuterie board in the shape of a tree or snowman with evergreen trimmings is quick and easy to assemble.
Naked Cake A cake mix, a simple buttercream frosting and a gingerbread house kit is all it took to create this adorable 3-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow. Double Creme Brie Board This double creme brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joe's and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer and to add interest. This brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers. Double Chocolate Cake If you don't have time to bake a cake but want your store bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries

adorn the top of this cake, and to add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece. Gourmet Hot Chocolate If serving a warm beverage for guests to enjoy, consider hot chocolate with burnt sugar rimmed mugs. If creating a hot chocolate bar, provide whipped cream and marshmallow toppings as well as added flavorings such as caramel, peppermint, or make it a boozy hot chocolate with whiskey, Bailey’s or Peppermint Schnapps.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
