PRIORITIZING HEALTHY SKIN

A Dermatology Practice Built on a Foundation of Caring
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOW BEAR MEDIA
When Dr. Leslie Carter decided to become a dermatologist, one of the foremost reasons was to help decrease people’s physical and often mental suffering that comes with various skin conditions.

“My goal is to make people more confident in their skin and make their skin healthier,” she says. “People sometimes underestimate the amount of distress skin conditions can create, but it's a serious issue. It's a real gift to be able to help our patients address their unique skin conditions."
Deschutes Dermatology, the practice she founded in Bend, is celebrating 20 years in business. Over the years, not only has the practice expanded, but so have the treatment options. “I took over a very small practice with a different name, and there were two employees,” Dr. Carter recalls.
Dr. Carter and her staff have embraced new technologies that have arisen over time, such as immunologically-based therapies for psoriasis and eczema and treatments for melanoma. When it comes to aesthetics, the proliferation of fillers, neurotoxins like Botox®, and laser technology have improved the efficacy of treating wrinkles, sunspots, skin laxity, skin texture, and more.
“Staying up to date takes a lot of research, training and continued medical education,” she says. “We’re always reviewing new technologies to add to the practice because we want to give our patients what they want and provide them with new options for treating conditions that bother them.”
A new device recently acquired is JetPeel. Dr. Carter notes, “We’re very excited about it. It’s a no-downtime exfoliation and serum infusion device for the face, but we're also using it on the scalp to address hair loss.”
Hair loss, especially in women, can be complicated and arise from many factors. Dr. Carter has spent the last couple of years doing a deep dive into this issue and is building up a hair loss clinic offering non-surgical regenerative hair loss solutions for men and women.

Taking the time to educate patients is another important part of her career. “Patients come in with the idea that they want ‘X’ procedure, but it may not be the right solution for the problem they have,” states Dr. Carter, “So, we have to go through that educational piece to help us figure out the right approach.”
If it’s precancerous or cancerous, Dr. Carter and her team can handle it. Another advantage, she says, is if there are any complications with the procedures, she and her staff can take care of it on the spot.
DeschutesDermatology.com
One of the advantages of visiting a dermatology practice versus a spa, she explains, is that they usually assess patients differently. “For each patient, we determine what can be treated and how it should be treated. For instance, my aesthetician is trained to come to me or one of our physicians’ assistants if she sees anything that looks odd, rather than just lasering over it or doing a chemical peel.”
There are times when what the patient is seeking can only be accomplished through surgery, and in that case, she’ll be honest with them. “We're not going to convince them to do something just to do it. We can even make referrals to plastic surgeons.”
Due to the longevity of the practice, patients she once treated for acne, she’s now treating for wrinkles! Dr. Carter is looking forward to what the next 20 years will bring.

ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER
of Christmas The Centerpiece

For some families, a trip to the forest to cut a Christmas tree is a cherished tradition.
HOW CHRISTMAS TREES BECAME A SYMBOL OF JOY, PEACE AND GIVING

The Christmas tree evokes a cascade of memories for many. A symbol of joy and festivity during the holiday season, the history of Christmas trees blends ancient traditions with modern celebrations to represent renewal, hope, and the spirit of giving.
For centuries, evergreen plants and trees, those that remain green year-round, held a special meaning during the winter months. People in ancient times would bring evergreen boughs indoors to adorn windows and doorways where they symbolized eternal life, renewal and rebirth during the darkest days of the year.
The modern tradition of indoor Christmas trees began in Germany during the 16th century. It is believed that Martin Luther, the 16th century Protestant reformer, was the first to place lighted candles on an indoor evergreen tree after finding himself inspired by the twinkling of stars through the evergreens on an evening walk. Fast forward to 1846 when the popular royal family Queen Victoria, her German Prince Albert, and their children were captured in a sketch which appeared in the Illustrated London News standing around their Christmas tree… making this tradition fashionable.
By the late 1800’s, Christmas trees were gaining popularity in America. Early on, most Americans decorated their trees with homemade ornaments, such as festive popcorn strung with berries and nuts, pinecones, pieces of fruit and other simple decorations. In 1882, Edward H. Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison, hand-wired the first string of electric Christmas lights. With this invention, Christmas trees could be safely illuminated and began to appear in town squares across the country. By now having a Christmas tree in the home was fast becoming an American tradition.

Traditions vary across cultures and families surrounding Christmas trees, from the type of tree— either artificial, pre-cut, live or cut-your-own— to the date the tree is set up, to how it is decorated. When it comes to real trees, according to the National Christmas Tree Association, “roughly 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold annually in the U.S.”
One local nursery founded in 1978 by Gary English, Landsystems Nursery, began selling pre-cut Christmas trees 25 years ago. “We offer premium Noble and Nordmann fir trees from a farm in the valley,” states Cindy Jeffers, manager of Landsystems Nursery since it opened 46 years ago. They also offer a variety of live potted evergreen trees some prefer to use as Christmas trees.
Landsystems Nursery has a unique way of displaying their cut tree selection, hanging them from the rafters in one of their greenhouses so that customers can twirl a tree to experience the fullness and shape of each. Along with their Christmas trees, the nursery also offers an expansive and immersive “Holiday House,” a Christmas shop offering ornaments organized by themes, poinsettias, Christmas cacti, holiday decorations, gifts and more.
“We just want to share the joy of the season,” Jeffers adds. “We invite people to come in and take their holiday photos in front of our trees and displays. Our goal is to create an escape from the busyness of life where you can slow down and enjoy the beauty of the season.”
When it comes to holiday traditions, Christmas trees are the centerpiece for many families and symbolize more than holiday décor. They represent the spirit of togetherness, hope and the timeless tradition of bringing warmth, light and life into the darkest days of the year.

For some, a live potted evergreen is the perfect Christmas tree that can be planted in the spring.
Christmas trees are the centerpiece of the holiday season for many, representing light, joy and the spirit of giving.

Interesting Facts About Christmas Trees
• The first decorated Christmas tree was in Riga, Latvia in 1510.
• The first Christmas tree retail lot in the United States was started by Mark Carr in New York, in 1851.
• Christmas trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.
• There are over 35 species of evergreen trees grown as Christmas trees. The most common types are fir, spruce, pine and cedar.
• The average growing time for a six- to sevenfoot-tall Christmas tree is seven years.
• In the first week in your home, a Christmas tree will consume up to a quart of water per day.
• The tallest Christmas tree was a 221-foot Douglas Fir displayed in 1950 at Northgate Mall in Seattle, WA.
• Real Christmas trees are an environmentally friendly choice, especially if they are recycled. Here’s why:
• For every Christmas tree cut, a tree farm plants one to three seedlings the following year.
• Approximately 350 million Christmas trees are currently growing on about 350,000 acres in the U.S., all planted by farmers and preserving green space.
• Like giant air purifiers, one acre of Christmas trees consumes about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. This same acreage also produces about 1,000 pounds of oxygen, the same amount that 18 people need to breathe in one year.
• Young trees produce more oxygen than mature forests.
• Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and can be recycled and used for mulch and other purposes.
CUTTING YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE
• Christmas Tree Permits ($5 each) are available online or from local vendors.

Organizing Home Spaces

Local Oregonized Closets Offers Functionality for Your Home

If you have someone on your holiday gift list that is hard to buy for, think about giving the gift of a beautifully organized home. After the rush of the holidays, organization for a closet, pantry, office or garage is a gift that keeps on giving through the year, bringing peace and efficiency to everyday life.
Home interior remodeling often includes redesigning storage and closed off spaces into more organized and spatially conscience areas, where household items can be stored more efficiently and comfortably. When most new homes are built, closets, pantries and storage spaces are built at a very basic level, with little to no imagination.
Locally owned Oregonized Closets, LLC, specializes in remodeling basic storage areas into appealing and functional spaces. “Although our company does have the word ‘closets’ in the name, we do much more than that,” states owner and operator Grant McDonald. “We also offer storage solutions for pantries, mudrooms, garages and more.”
While closets are the most common service requested, garage cabinetry and storage systems are also in high demand. “We believe this is because of all of the outdoor equipment and toys we have as Central Oregonians,” McDonald explains. “I love coming into a garage and building out a great system that not only looks awesome but functions well.”
Owners Grant and Chyenne McDonald, both native Oregonians, met at OSU Cascades in Bend. Working with a Bend contractor during college,

Grant participated in home remodels and house flipping which laid the foundation for his knowledge in construction. After graduation, the couple lived in Montana for a year. During this time, Grant found his passion in designing luxury closets and storage systems.
The McDonald’s soon returned to Central Oregon to be closer to family and Oregonized Closets, LLC was born. “We were familiar with the building industry in Bend and the constant flow of people moving into the area. We knew that starting a company while also moving could be a stressful situation, but we asked ourselves, if not now, when?” notes McDonald.
THE PROCESS
Oregonized Closets uses a five-step, detailed process for all projects, big and small.
From owners Grant and Chyenne McDonald:
1. The first phase is the consultation with our customer to discuss the vision for the project, how to use the space and the budget.
2. Second is the design phase. This goes on behind the scenes. Most designs are completed and returned to the customer the next business day. Larger and more intricate designs may take a bit longer. When the design is complete, 3D images, plans, and details are sent to our customer via email.
3. The third phase is discussing the design with our customer. This can be as simple as “looks good, let’s move forward,” or we can meet several more times to discuss alternate options.
“With our business you will truly get the ‘local’ experience… We would love to shake your hand and show you how we can transform your space.”
— Grant McDonald, owner of Oregonized Closets, LLC
4. The fourth phase is when our customer accepts the design and price. Now materials are ordered and the job is scheduled.
5. The fifth phase is installation. This is where the ideas and design come to life. Following installation, we walk the customer through the finished project.
“We truly value our customers and their support of our small, family owned and operated business. One of our top priorities is to provide excellent communication and keep our customers informed during the entire process,” McDonald states. “With our business you will truly get the ‘local’ experience as we work directly with our customers start to finish. We would love to shake your hand and show you how we can transform your space.”

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com .

Holiday Entertaining Boards
The holidays are here and entertaining is in full swing. If you are looking for the perfect appetizer to easily feed a crowd these simple and beautiful boards are sure to please.
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Tips for creating the perfect board:
• Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first.
• Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more.
• Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement.
• Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board
• Fig Jelly
• Honey
• Variety of Cheeses
• Salami or meat of choice
• Olives (provide a variety)
• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut
• Grapes, berries, persimmon
• Crackers
Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

THE PERFECT FALL TREAT
ACORN DONUT HOLES
ARTICLE BY MADELINE LEBLANC
As the vibrant colors of summer slowly yield to the warm and earthy hues of autumn, there’s a distinct charm in the air at the arrival of fall. It’s a season filled with the crisp rustling of leaves, cozy sweaters, and the promise of pumpkin-spiced everything. What better way to embrace the changing seasons than by indulging in a delightful treat that captures the essence of both summer’s sweetness and fall’s rich flavors?
My recipe for “Acorn Donut Holes” combines the light, airy sweetness of summer donuts with the warm, comforting tones of fall. Grab your ingredients and let’s get started!
Ingredients:
• Donut holes
• Melting chocolates
• Fall sprinkles
• Pretzels

Instructions:
1. Pour your fall sprinkles into a small bowl for dipping. Lay wax paper down.
2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the melting chocolates in the microwave, about 15-20 seconds. Carefully watch to ensure they don’t burn.
3. Dip the top of each donut hole into the melted chocolate, covering about halfway down the donut.
4. After dipping, immediately dip the chocolate-covered portion of the donut hole into the bowl of sprinkles, coating it with the fall sprinkles.
5. Insert a pretzel into the top of the “acorn” to create the acorn stem.
6. Carefully place the decorated acorn donut holes on the wax paper to let them cool and allow the chocolate to set.
7. Once the chocolate has hardened, your acorn donut holes are ready to enjoy!
These delightful treats are perfect for fall and make for a fun and tasty dessert or snack. Enjoy!
